As a crucial component of the financial sector, banks play an intermediary role in creating and providing financial services to customers. Therefore, the evaluation of banking sector activity is important for stakeholders and managers. This paper investigates the key criteria in analyzing bank performance and efficiency and the relative performance of Turkish banks in terms of the pre-determined criteria during 2008–2018. This study aims to introduce a robust and easy-to-calculate mathematical model for estimating bank performance using stepwise regression and TOPSIS methods. The TOPSIS ranking of banks from the best to the worst allows establishing that the bank with the highest mean score is Akbank (AB), while Ziraat Bank (ZB) and Garanti Bank (GB) follow AB over the period. The results of the stepwise regression analysis show that managing non-performing loans and expenses (both personnel and interest expenses) are critical to high performance in the banking sector.

Abstract Purpose This study empirically analyzes whether the rapid growth of loans and risk-taking behavior during the expansion of loans affected non-performing loans (NPLs) and the solvency of financial institutions in the Turkish banking system. Design/methodology/approach Using the GMM Generalized Method of Moments, this study used data on Turkish banks from 2011 to 2017 to test two hypotheses on the effects of loan growth on NPLs and solvency. Findings This study finds significant results for the effect of loan growth on NPLs and solvency. NPLs rose from the previous year’s loan growth, which tended to reduce solvency. Research limitations/implications Due to selected research methods, the results may lack generality. Therefore, future studies should test the propositions herein further. Practical implications The results indicate that careful allocation behavior is required when lending. Additionally, these findings may be helpful to financial managers and decision makers. Originality/value This study confirms the need to determine how to allocate loans during the loan boom periods.

By using data from thirteen publicly traded commercial and deposit banks this paper estimates the determinants of market risk for banks' equities in the case of an emerging market economy, Turkey. The analysis reveals that maturity composition of banks' loans, share of trading income in banks' overall revenue stream and its foreign-ownership structure are important indicators of the volatility of its equity returns. Banks with shorter loan maturity positions are regarded by investors as safer companies to invest in while increases in trading income as a source of banks' overall revenue increases the volatility of its equity returns. Foreign ownership of a bank also lowers its equity return risk.

The efficiency scores of the 18 commercial banks are measured by using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) between the years 2008-2014. Input oriented CCR and BCC models and intermediation approaches are used in this. The research questions addressed in this paper are: Has the bank efficiency increased over the years between 2008 and 2014? What are the main sources of inefficiency? Are the private and foreign banks more efficient than the public banks? Are the human resources policies of the public banks inefficient? [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose- These effects lead to many crises in the country, especially the economic crisis, and may result in serious chaos environments. In order not to experience these situations, the banking sector must be under audit and observation. One of the most important actions to be taken for this audit and observation is the regular measurement of financial performance analysis of banks. CAMELS analysis is a globally accepted system for this performance analysis. Camels analysis measures banks with components of capital adequacy, asset quality, management quality, profitability, liquidity and sensitivity to market risks. Methodology- In this study, a total of 16 banks, 2 separate bank groups operating in the Turkish banking sector, 13 of which are private capital banks, 3 of which are Public Banks, were subjected to CAMELS analysis for 16 separate periods taking into account the balance sheets at the end of 2003 and 2018. Findings- According to the results of the study, among the banks, Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Ziraat Bankası A.Ş., Akbank T.A.Ş. ve Türkiye Garanti Bankası A.Ş. among the groups, it was observed that the group of Public Banks perform a stronger performance than other banks and groups. Conclusion- The fact that all banks and bank groups operating in the Turkish banking sector have a stronger performance in the coming process will undoubtedly create a more appropriate level of economic prosperity for every structure in the state and individual scale in Turkey's economic sense. In this paper, the impact of the amount of bank capital on the bank liquidity creation is explored using a sample of 21 Turkish banks and quarterly data for the period 2010Q1- 2017Q4. Our methodology involves fixed effects panel data estimation techniques and we use lagged independent variables to control for endogeneity. Our findings indicate that the liquidity creation of Turkish banks has dramatically increased over time and it is primarily driven by large banks. Our results from the regression analysis indicate that bank liquidity creation is increased under higher levels of capital for the whole sample. While a higher level of bank capital increases bank liquidity for small banks, the opposite case occurs for large banks, namely, the created liquidity decreases by more bank capital. We offer some important policy implications in that while regulators in the emerging markets impose capital requirements on banks, they need to consider the impact on liquidity creation of banks of different sizes.

BANKING industry ,QUALITY of work life ,MARKETPLACES ,CONSUMERS - Abstract
Purpose – The aim of this paper is to investigate and define the competitive positioning of banks including state-owned, domestic and foreign banks operating in Istanbul, Turkey. The aim is to check the competitive marketplace and to identify the major quality attributes, which bankers themselves and their customers used in determining the overall perception of a given bank and services offered. Design/methodology/approach – The investigation was held in Istanbul, Turkey. In total, 30 banks were included in the research, which includes state-owned, local and foreign-owned banks. A total of 1,530 questionnaires were submitted, answers collected and analyzed. Reliability test and frequency analysis were used to analyze the data. Findings – From the banks' customers' point of view, determinants relating to functional quality or how the customers wish to receive banking services became evident. It also became clear that customers of banks are not fully receiving what they want or need and their expectations, especially on the most important attributes of quality, are not being met. Research limitations/implications – The survey showed how the banks were selected and including their employees in relation to the other competitors' banks in the Turkish banking industry. Originality/value – The paper demonstrates an integrated technology, use of staff talent and streamlined operations that respond to customer needs and encourage customers to use the whole range of banking products/services rather than only a few as the end game. The results were used by bank staff later on to reengineer and redesign creatively their positioning strategy and the future direction for creating more effective quality strategies. This study aims to explore the influence of human resource management (HRM) activities and organizational climate on job satisfaction in Turkish banks. The study first examines the relative influence of eight HRM activities of: (i) behavior and attitudes (in recruitment and selection); (ii) teamwork; (iii) extensive training; (iv) written policies; (v) training in multiple functions; (vi) incentives; (vii) performance appraisal; and (viii) feedback on performance on job satisfaction. Second, the influence of six factors relating to organizational climate are examined, again from the view point of their influence on job satisfaction. The second group factors are: (i) support for innovation; (ii) managerial competence and consistency; (iii) workload pressure; (iv) cohesion; (v) organizational boundaries; and (vi) organizational ethics. The data collected through interviews from 346 employees from 19 banks show that in addition to the positive impact of HRM activities, organizational climate in particular makes a significant contribution to job satisfaction. The paper presents the influence of the two groups of factors on job satisfaction and the mechanisms through which these factors foster job satisfaction and their implications for practitioners. INTERNATIONAL banking industry ,BANKING laws ,FINANCIAL crises - Abstract
Bank for International Settlements (BIS) proposes that all banks calculate and report amount of market risk they incur and allocate sufficient amount of capital starting at the beginning of year 2002. BIS also suggests that value-at-risk (VaR) models in computing market risk should be used. The Turkish Bank Regulation and Supervision Agency already required all Turkish banks to compute and periodically report market risk and reserve adequate amount of capital since January, 2002. This study mimics an average trading marketable securities portfolio subject to market risk of the four largest Turkish banks. The publicly available quarterly financial reports of year 2001 for Isbank, Garanti, Yapi Kredi and Akbank are examined, and a mimicking portfolio composition is determined as bond investments; 60% in Turkish currency (TRL), 20% in American dollar (USD) and 20%in Euro (EUR). TheVaR amounts of the mimicking portfolio are computed by applying Historical Simulation, Monte Carlo Simulation, Delta-Normal and Standard Methods. Finally, stress test is applied for each of the models by using crisis scenarios. The Turkish financial crises of November 2000 and February 2001 are simulated as stress scenarios. The results of stress testing reveal that all methods except standard method can stand the crisis in November 2000, but none of the models can stand the crisis in February 2001. BANKING industry ,CORPORATE governance - Abstract
Turkish banks are quite heterogeneous in terms of organizational form, ownership structure, size, age, portfolio concentration, growth prospects and attitude toward risk. They also exhibit strong variations in performance as measured by several efficiency indices. In the light of theoretical advances in corporate finance and financial institutions, this paper is an in-depth cross-sectional analysis of the Turkish banking sector, which explores the various bank, market and regulatory characteristics that may explain the efficiency variations across banks. Consistent with the related hypotheses investigated, the results indicate that a number of independent bank characteristics are significantly correlated with various efficiency measures.

- Abstract
This paper examines the profitability of Turkish commercial banks during the period 2005 – 2014. We use bank – specific determinants to predict the following years’ profitability measured by return on assets (ROA). Among the performance measures, the amount of net interest income as a proportion of total operating income is positive related to profitability. It remains important for banks to loan money out at a rate higher than their cost of capital. Non-interest income as a proportion of total assets is strongly positively related to profitability. Consumer loans as a proportion of total loans is negatively related to profitability. Our findings indicate that while the traditional source of bank profits from lending remains crucial, diversifying away from consumer loans into earning income from non-interest sources is important for enhancing bank profitability.

Ankara : The Department of Management, İhsan Doğramacı Bilkent University, 2014. Thesis (Master's) -- Bilkent University, 2014. Includes bibliographical references leaves 70-72. In this study I examine the effects of Basel capital requirements on the behavior of Turkish banks for the period between December 2002 and December 2013. Turkish banks are found to increase their lending rates by 17.33 basis points in case of a one-percent rise in equity to asset ratio. When the same analysis is applied to state, private and foreign banks, it is found that state banks behave differently and decrease their lending rates when they increase their equity to asset ratio. As a second analysis, I examine how banks react when they are exposed to regulatory pressure to increase their equity to asset ratio. I use simultaneous equations methodology to measure the effects of regulatory pressure. The findings indicate that private banks do not change their behavior, state banks increase their equity to asset ratio and foreign banks decrease their risk level when they are exposed to regulatory pressure. Various researches have involved with the leadership and its effects within the organizations in global literature. A number of theoretical models also deal with the leadership style, and the job satisfaction that focus on the several dimensions on employees’ perceptions in an organization. Our study focuses on the notion that leadership styles and the communication competency of bank managers are the basic elements that affect the employees’ job satisfaction in Turkish banks. The survey of this study is conducted on deposit banks in Turkey. The obtained data from the questionnaires are investigated through the SPSS statistical packaged software. Empirical findings reveal that interactive leadership style and communication competency have a stronger relationship with job satisfaction. However, transformational and individual oriented leadership don’t have any clear influence on bank employees’ job satisfaction.

This study analyses the efficiency of the Turkish bank system over the period 2000-2005. The estimation showed that inefficiency decreases over the period under consideration and the analysis unambiguously indicates that the Turkish banking system has a large potential for improvement. The state banks appear to reduce their costs more comfortably than the private banks by using their size due to their low employee expenses and less expensive cost of borrowing. The restructuring programme appears to have transformed the state-banks into the more efficient and profitable institutions.

In this study, a comparative performance analysis between state-owned and privately-owned commercial banks of Turkey is carried out over the period between 1997 and 2006. On the contrary to expectations, statistical findings of the study produce surprising results. The results suggest that state-owned banks are as efficient as private banks, and even more efficient at some aspects. Thus, it rises the question of "whether to privatize banks or not?. © 2007 John Mylonakis.

In this study, a comparative performance analysis between state-owned and privately-owned commercial banks of Turkey is carried out over the period between 1997 and 2006. On the contrary to expectations, statistical findings of the study produce surprising results. Anahtar Sözcükler:Diskriminant Analizi TMSF Bankacılıkta risk Türk Bankaları It can easily be seen that existing one variable analysis under some restictiveconditions used in scientific research are not enough. The most important restrictionregarding one variable analysis is that all but one variables are kept under controlexperimentally and the effect of only one variable each time is considered. Because ofthis ineffectiveness of one variable analysis, researchers started to prefer multi variablestatistical analysis. In this study theoretical background of Discriminant Analysis which isconsidered as one of the multi variable statistical analysis methods defined as the totalof procedures made to classify data to the group it belongs with the minimum number oferrors is established and a financial application is given. In the first chapter, the reasons for the multi variable statistical analysismethods to be used, their aims, definitions are recalled and after all that, someinformation on normal distribution which is one of the most important assumptions ofDiscriminant Analysis is given. Also Discriminant Analysis is compared with otheranalysis. In the second chapter, the usage, theoretical background, assumptions, themeaning, the methods and the function of Discriminant Analysis are discussed. In the third chapter, a financial application of Discriminant Analysis todiscriminate between financially succesful and unseccesful banks in the years 1999,2000 and 2001 according to their financial performances is studied. In this study, therisk factors have been focused on as the performans is assessed according to riskcriteria.Key Words:Discriminant Analysis TMSF Risk at Banking Turkish Banks 130

EM bond investors are watching Turkish banks closely, as some of the banks have heavy maturities falling due in the next year and capital ratios are being battered by the huge drop in the lira. But DCM bankers are telling these issuers that the lower levels may mean there are opportunities for buy-backs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
