The aim of this article is to raise discussion on the internationalisation possibilities of master's students who study while working. The objective of the article is to describe and share experiences on how to make the development of students' internationalisation competence possible through collaboration with representatives of different cultures during a one-week intensive course. Internationalisation is an essential component in the competence-based curriculum of master's level social and healthcare education. On the other hand, it has been a difficult task for adult students to enhance their internationalisation competence when they pursue studies alongside work. In addition, internationalisation in master's level education has been a key feature both in Finland and in Russia. An intensive course is one educational method to share students' existing professional know-how in an international multi-professional student group and to enable adult students' mobility. This paper describes a one-week intensive course which was carried out in St. Petersburg, Russia in autumn 2008. The course was evaluated by the adult students and their teachers participating in the course. The intensive course increased the degree of transparency and compatibility between higher education and advanced professional education qualifications gained in postgraduate healthcare education in the partner organisations. The current age of globalization poses challenges as to how to promote professional interaction to further international scholarly efforts in nursing. Models of global research are defined. Global health priorities are explicated, with recommendations for the conduct of outcomes-focused research leading to the generation of cost-effective interventions that contribute to the health and well-being of individuals, families, communities, and nations throughout the world. The challenges and opportunities in international collaborative nursing research are described based on the experiences of the authors during nearly two decades of collaborative work. International partnerships in globally relevant research, which respect and value equity between nurse researchers practicing in developed and developing countries, are essential.

The article is concerned with the results of the first experience of the work of a new Leningrad Center of microsurgery for the replantation of fingers and hand after the traumatic amputation. The operations were performed urgently within the first hours after traumas. The replantation included a microsurgical step recovering the integrity of the vessels and nerves by means of an operation microscope, special instruments and suture material. In eleven patients 22 operations were fulfilled with good near and late results. The results of surgery were found to depend on the damage character and time of admission of the patients to the hospital.

Changes in lymphocyte and monocyte counts in peripheral blood of patients who had undergone combined treatment for malignant cutaneous melanoma of low extremities were evaluated. The posttreatment counts were compared with those for mononuclear cell infiltration of tumor stroma. Mononuclear cell levels in blood and in tumor stroma versus patients' survival time were analysed. A moderate correlation between lymphocyte and monocyte (macrophage) levels in tumor stroma, on the one hand, and survival time, on the other, was established.
