Patients and methods: A retrospective analysis on 215 consecutive early breast cancer patients treated with breast conserving surgery and adjuvant hypofractionated whole-breast radiotherapy (according the Ontario Canadian trial), with a 6 years median follow-up was conducted. To assess the impact of 10%–20% dose hotspots on different percent values of planning target volume (PTV) of the breast, we retrospectively employed the NTCP model of Lyman. PTV breast (PTVbr), V110 were identified. For statistical analysis the χ2 and paired t-test were used to find a correlation between late skin and subcutaneous toxicity and cosmetic outcome with dosimetrical parameters Multivariate analysis was performed with the aim to assess independently the impact of dosimetric and clinical parameters on late toxicity and cosmesis using Pearson’s covariance. Results: Late skin toxicity was recorded in 47/215 (22%); and G3 toxicity occurred in 11 patients (5%). Cosmesis with excellent–good score was found in 172 patients (80%) while fair–poor score was found in 43 patients (20%). In univariate χ2 analysis the V110 >10% of the PTV breast significantly correlated with higher toxicity (P10% and PTV breast volume over 1,300 cc was significant at multivariate analysis (P

The basaitic lavas from the Olot volcanic region exhibit δO18 values which range between +5.6 and +6.5 ‰. These values indicate that the magmas derived from a mantle source with a oxygen isotopic signature similar to other continental settings where this type of volcanism is presento Furthermore, since these data allow to discard any kind of crustal contamination, they confirm that partial melting and fractional crystallization are the only processes which led to the generation of these rocks.Las lavas basálticas de la región volcánica de Olot presentan unos valores δO18 comprendidos entre +5,6 y +6,5 ‰. Estos valores indican que los magmas han derivado de un manto que tiene una composición isotópica de oxígeno semejante a la de otras áreas continentales, en las que se ha generado un volcanismo de esta naturaleza. Asimismo, confirman que los fenómenos de fusión parcial y cristalización fraccionada son los únicos que han intervenido en la generación de estas rocas, ya que se puede descartar cualquier tipo de interacción cortical.

The southern and southeastern rim of the present caldera (La Fossa caldera) at Vulcano Island (Aeolian Islands, Italy) is crosscut by a network of fractures filled with calcite and minor chalcedony. Fluid inclusion studies indicate that both mineral phases were deposited from hydrothermal solutions. Several calcite samples were analyzed and their U, Sr, Nd, O and C isotopic composition was determined. UTh geochronological data suggest two discrete depositional episodes: one at 50 ka (southern rim) and the other at 25 ka (southeastern rim). Oxygen isotopic compositions, 87Sr/86Sr and 234U/238U ratios exclude that seawater was involved significantly in the hydrothermal system, in agreement with fluid inclusion studies which did not document the presence of NaCl. The Nd and Sr isotopic composition of calcite reflects the composition of the host rocks. The oxygen isotopic composition excludes a post-depositional interaction with meteoric water and suggests a depositional temperature consistent with that obtained from the fluid inclusion study (160–170 °C), assuming equilibrium conditions and a fluid isotopic composition close to present-day steam emissions. The positive correlation between U content and C isotopic composition indicates a rapid change in CO2 pressure during calcite deposition. This observation is consistent with a rapid fluid ascent, likely connected to two phases of collapse of the La Fossa caldera. The ages of the calcites which fill the fractures at the La Fossa caldera indicate the activation time of the fracture systems which, in turn, are connected to the above mentioned phases of the caldera collapse.

Il lavoro affronta lo studio archeometrico sistematico dei reperti in marmo bianco rinvenuti nell'area di scavo italo - tunisina del sito archeologico di Uthina (Tunisia). Dai risultati delle analisi minero-petrografiche, chimiche e isotopiche e con l'impiego di una banca dati di riferimento, costruita di recente utilizzando un gran numero di campioni sia di marmi provenienti da antiche cave sia di manufatti di attribuzione certa, è stato possibile individuare le cave di provenienza di ciascun reperto indagato. L'integrazione di queste informazioni con quelle di natura più strettamente storico-archeologica ha consentito un'interpretazione più focalizzata nella ricostruzione di importanti aspetti della vita quotidiana della comunità che nel corso dei secoli ha popolato questa prestigiosa colonia romana del Nord Africa tra cui: i rapporti con il territorio occupato, le relazioni con altre genti, gli scambi di manufatti e materie prime secondo le principali rotte commerciali seguite nel Mediterraneo in epoca romana. I risultati dell'indagine archeometrica sono serviti inoltre ad attribuire i singoli frammenti a comuni manufatti scultorei ed elementi architettonici, favorendo così l'opera del restauratore.
