This study aimed to explore the effects of different comminution degrees and the incorporation of a natural antioxidant on the quality attributes and oxidative reactions of turkey meat. Four distinctive turkey meat systems were established, namely: 3 mm minced treatment (M), 3 mm minced treatment with the addition of 200 ppm gallic acid equivalent Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis Mill.) extract (MA), fine-ground treatment (FM), and fine-ground treatment with the addition of 200 ppm gallic acid equivalent Aloe vera extract (FMA). The evaluation encompassed an in-depth analysis of various quality parameters and the assessment of lipid-protein oxidation reactions throughout the storage period. The inclusion of Aloe vera extract (AE) increased the pH and b* values while simultaneously decreasing the L* and a* values. Conversely, increasing the degree of comminuting manifested an elevation in L* values, concomitant with a decline in a* values. Increased comminuting degree ratios were found to contribute to an exacerbation of oxidative reactions. Nonetheless, the strategic utilization of AE demonstrated its potential to effectively mitigate oxidative reactions during storage.

Elderly ESRD patients have been found to be more prone to depression than the general population. There are many studies that have addressed the relationship between sleep quality (SQ), depression, and health related quality of life (HRQoL) in ESRD patients, but previous studies have not confirmed the association in elderly hemodialysis (HD) patients. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to demonstrate this relationship in elderly HD patients.Patients and methods: Sixty-three elderly HD patients (32 females and 31 males aged between 65 and 89 years) were included in this cross-sectional study. A modified Post-Sleep Inventory (PSI), the Medical Outcomes Study 36-item short form health survey, and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) were applied.Results: The prevalence of poor sleepers (those with a PSI total sleep score [PSI-4 score] of 4 or higher) was 71% (45/63), and the prevalence of depression was 25% (16/63). Of the 45 poor sleepers, 15 had depression, defined as a BDI score of 17 or higher. Poor sleepers had a significantly higher rate of diabetes mellitus (P = 0.03), significantly higher total BDI scores, and lower Physical Component Scale scores (ie, lower HRQoL) than good sleepers. The PSI-4 score correlated negatively with Physical Component Scale (r = −0.500, P < 0.001) and Mental Component Scale scores (r = −0.527, P < 0.001) and it correlated positively with the BDI score (r = 0.606, P < 0.001). In multivariate analysis, independent variables of PSI-4 score were BDI score (beta value [β] = 0.350, P < 0.001), Mental Component Scale score (β = −0.291, P < 0.001), and age (β = 0.114, P = 0.035).Conclusion: Poor SQ is a very common issue and is associated with both depression and lower HRQoL in elderly HD patients.Keywords: health-related quality of life, end-stage renal disease, poor sleep quality, Post-Sleep Inventory, Beck Depression Inventory

To compare intraocular pressure (IOP) measurements obtained in rabbits using rebound (TV) and applanation (TPV) tonometers with four different methods of physical restraint. A total of 20 New Zealand White rabbits (40 eyes) were included in this study. IOP readings were obtained from both eyes using the two different tonometers. The rabbits were placed on a table and restrained by wrapping in a cloth (Method I), by scruffing with rear support (Method II), by wrapping in a cloth and cupped in the hands (Method III), or by a box restrainer (Method IV). The mean IOP measurement obtained by TPV was higher than that obtained with the TV for all handling methods. Mean differences (TV−TPV, in mmHg) in IOP were −5.3 (95% Cl = −6.5 to −4.1) for Method 1, −4.7 (95% Cl = −6.2 to −3.29) for Method II, −4.9 (95% Cl = −6.2 to −3.7) for Method III and −7.6 (95% Cl = −9.2 to −5.9) for Method IV. Using the TV tonometer, mean IOP for Method IV was higher than for Method I (mean difference 2.1 (95% Cl = 1.1–3.1)), whereas using the TPV tonometer, mean IOP for Method IV was significantly higher than Method I, II, and III (mean differences: 4.4 (95% Cl = 2.6–5.9), 3.7 (95% Cl = 2–5.3) and 3.8 (95% Cl = 2–5.4), respectively). According to Bland-Altman plots, IOP readings for TPV tended to be higher than those for TV with all handling methods, but with a lack of agreement. The mean difference and 95% limits of agreement for the differences between TV and TPV were −5.4 mmHg (−12.5–1.9 mmHg), −4.7 mmHg (−12.9–3.5 mmHg), −4.9 mmHg (−12–2.2 mmHg), and −7.5 mmHg (−17.4–2.3 mmHg), with Methods I, II, III, and IV, respectively. Comparing TV and TPV, only 7.5%, 12.5%, 27.5%, and 15% of IOP measurements from 20 rabbits were within the range considered clinically acceptable for IOP (± 2 mmHg) for Method I, II, III, and IV, respectively. In conclusion, the physical restraint method should be recorded when IOP is measured in rabbits, and TV and TPV tonometers cannot be used interchangeably (high bias and low proportion of measurements within ± 2 mmHg). Phthalates are man-made, endocrine disrupting chemicals that are commonly used in plastics, medical applications, drugs, personal care products, cosmetics, perfumes, home furnishings, dyes, children's toys, food packaging. Animal studies have revealed that phthalates have many adverse health effects. Since phthalates do not dissolve in acidic environments, they are only soluble in neutral or basic environments, they are frequently used in gastro-resistant film coatings of drugs that are not intended to dissolve in the stomach and that need to be dissolved directly in the intestine. Within the scope of this study, phthalates and their amounts in frequently used drugs in our country were determined by GC-MS and the potential health risks of patients using such drugs were evaluated. It was determined that the total phthalate concentrations in the examined drug samples ranged between 0.209 and 4.800 mg kg−1, and the amounts in a single tablet ranged between 2.7× 10−5 and 1.5× 10−3 mg/tablet. The highest concentrations of total phthalate were found in cholesterol (4.800 mg kg−1) and blood pressure lowering drugs (4.442 mg kg−1). The calculated hazard index values were found to be less than one. This showed that the phthalates detected in the drugs examined did not pose a risk to human health. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Diabetic nephropathy is the leading cause of end-stage renal disease, and both the incidence and prevalence of diabetic nephropathy continue to increase. Currently, various treatment regimens and combinations of therapies provide only partial renoprotection. It is obvious that new approaches are desperately needed to retard the progression of diabetic nephropathy. Recently, a number of new agents have been described that have the potential to delay the progression of diabetic kidney disease and minimize the growing burden of end-stage renal disease. These include inhibitors and breakers of advanced glycation end products, receptor antagonists for advanced glycation end products, protein kinase C inhibitors, NADPH (reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate) oxidase inhibitors, glycosaminoglycans, endothelin receptor antagonists, antifibrotic agents, and growth factor inhibitors. N-terminal probrain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) is elevated in patients with heart failure. Numerous clinical trials have evaluated the efficacy of spironolactone in heart failure; however, no studies have directly examined the effects of spironolactone treatment on NT-proBNP level. This study investigated whether NT-proBNP levels decrease with daily spironolactone treatment. The study consisted of 117 adult patients with heart failure. All participants were divided into 3 groups, class I, class II, and class III, according to the New York Heart Association classification system. Patients were randomly assigned to receive spironolactone or were treated with another drug, other than spironolactone, as placebo. NT-proBNP plasma samples were taken at baseline and after 6 mo of treatment. A total of 62 patients were treated with daily spironolactone; 55 patients were followed with available treatment without spironolactone. The baseline demographic and laboratory parameters were similar for patients in all groups. At the end of 6 mo, spironolactone-treated patients had significantly lower NT-proBNP levels and significantly better ejection fractions than did patients in all New York Heart Association classes who were not treated with spironolactone. Results suggest that spironolactone decreases plasma NT-proBNP concentrations, and that the measurement of plasma NT-proBNP levels may be helpful in assessing therapeutic efficacy in patients who are treated for heart failure. It is well known that epoetin alfa increases serum endothelin (ET)-1 and blood pressure. No data are available, however, on the effects of darbepoetin alfa on serum ET-1 and blood pressure. This study was conducted to compare the effects of darbepoetin alfa and epoetin alfa on serum ET-1 and blood pressure in patients on hemodialysis (HD). A total of 42 patients on HD were included in the study. Serum samples for measuring levels of ET-1 were taken 30 min after administration of epoetin alfa. After blood samples had been taken from all patients, epoetin alfa was changed to darbepoetin alfa. Three months after the start of darbepoetin alfa treatment, blood samples were taken to measure the same parameters. Mean arterial blood pressure was measured before recombinant human erythropoietin (EPO) administration and 30 min after EPO administration while patients were taking epoetin alfa or darbepoetin alfa. Injection of epoetin alfa or darbepoetin alfa significantly increased serum ET-1 levels compared with levels in those patients who were not on EPO therapy (P<.05). When the effects of epoetin alfa on serum ET-1 level were compared with those of darbepoetin alfa, the 2 types of EPO were found to increase serum ET-1 levels similarly (P>.05). Administration of epoetin alfa or darbepoetin alfa increased systolic and diastolic blood pressures significantly over values in the control group (P<.05). Serum systolic and diastolic blood pressures increased similarly after injection of epoetin alfa or darbepoetin alfa. Administration of darbepoetin alfa increased blood pressure in patients on HD in a way that was positively correlated with enhanced ET-1 release; a similar correlation was noted with epoetin alfa. Purpose: Current research on artificial intelligence-based fundus photography biomarkers has demonstrated inconsistent results. Consequently, we aimed to evaluate and predict the test-retest reliability of retinal parameters extracted from fundus photography., Methods: Two groups of patients were recruited for the study: an intervisit group (n = 28) to assess retest reliability over a period of 1 to 14 days and an intravisit group (n = 44) to evaluate retest reliability within a single session. Using AutoMorph, we generated test and retest vessel segmentation maps; measured segmentation map agreement via accuracy, sensitivity, F1 score and Jaccard index; and calculated 76 metrics from each fundus image. The retest reliability of each metric was analyzed in terms of the Spearman correlation coefficient, intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC), and relative percentage change. A linear model with the input variables contrast-to-noise-ratio and fractal dimension, chosen by a P-value-based backward selection process, was developed to predict the median percentage difference on retest per image based on image-quality metrics. This model was trained on the intravisit dataset and validated using the intervisit dataset., Results: In the intervisit group, retest reliability varied between Spearman correlation coefficients of 0.34 and 0.99, ICC values of 0.31 to 0.99, and mean absolute percentage differences of 0.96% to 223.67%. Similarly, in the intravisit group, the retest reliability ranged from Spearman correlation coefficients of 0.55 and 0.96, ICC values of 0.40 to 0.97, and mean percentage differences of 0.49% to 371.23%. Segmentation map accuracy between test and retest never dropped below 97%; the mean F1 scores were 0.85 for the intravisit dataset and 0.82 for the intervisit dataset. The best retest was achieved with disc-width regarding the Spearman correlation coefficient in both datasets. In terms of the Spearman correlation coefficient, the worst retests of the intervisit and intravisit groups were tortuosity density and artery tortuosity density, respectively. The intravisit group exhibited better retest reliability than the intervisit group (P < 0.001). Our linear model, with the two independent variables contrast-to-noise ratio and fractal dimension predicted the median retest reliability per image on its validation dataset, the intervisit group, with an R2 of 0.53 (P < 0.001)., Conclusions: Our findings highlight a considerable volatility in the reliability of some retinal biomarkers. Improving retest could allow disease progression modeling in smaller datasets or an individualized treatment approach. Image quality is moderately predictive of retest reliability, and further work is warranted to understand the reasons behind our observations better and thus ensure consistent retest results.

Background: Warmed intravenous (IV) fluids administration to prevent hypothermia provide controversial results in humans, cats and dogs, but its effect on calves is unknown., Objectivxe: To evaluate the effectiveness of warmed IV fluids administered to prevent intraoperative heat loss in anaesthetised calves undergoing umbilical herniorrhaphy., Methods: Thirty Simmental breed calves (aged 10-30 days) were randomly divided between two equal groups, wherein the infusion fluid (Ringer's lactate, 5 mL/kg/h) was administered either at room temperature (Group RoT) or warmed (Group WF). Pulse rate (PR), respiratory rate (f R ), peripheral haemoglobin oxygen saturation (SpO 2 ) and rectal temperature (RT) were recorded immediately after the onset of anaesthesia induction (T 0 ) at T 5 , T 10 , T 15 , T 30 , T 45 and T 60 . Duration of anaesthesia, surgery time and recovery scores were also noted., Results: The PR, RT and f R values showed no significant difference between groups over time (p > 0.05). There was no significant difference in duration of anaesthesia, surgery time or recovery score between groups (p > 0.05)., Conclusions: The findings of the current study suggest that warmed IV fluid as the warming method did not prevent intraoperative hypothermia in calves. Purpose: Existing retinal vessel tortuosity metrics lack standardization and retest reliability, hindering their clinical utility. Our study addresses this gap by introducing a novel metric, coined as the "vascular curvature index" (VCI), to enhance accuracy and consistency in biomarkers associated with medical conditions. We assess VCI's performance in terms of retest reliability in healthy subjects to transform early detection and monitoring approaches for various diseases., Methods: We recruited 44 patients for a single-session study, capturing fundus images before and after a five-minute break. Using AutoMorph, we generated vessel segmentation maps and evaluated retest reliability using multiple tortuosity metrics. The VCI was introduced and statistically compared to existing metrics. We performed a paired one-sided t-test to test for significantly improved retest reliability of our newly proposed metric. We analyzed distribution histograms, Fisher-Pearson coefficient of skewness, and correlation matrices for further insights., Results: VCI is the most retest-reliable metric, statistically surpassing other curvature metrics, except inverse spherical radius tortuosity. With a somewhat negatively distributed pattern (coefficient of skewness of -0.52), VCI exhibits the strongest correlation with the second most retest-reliable metric; inverse-radius-tortuosity (Pearson and Spearman correlation of 0.7 and 0.72, respectively). Its correlation with angle-tortuosity is lower (Pearson and Spearman correlation of 0.05 and 0.07, respectively)., Conclusions: The VCI emerges as a highly retest-reliable metric with a relatively normal distribution in healthy patients. Further investigation is warranted to evaluate its clinical performance in real-world applications, potentially influencing proactive healthcare interventions and personalized treatment decision-making.

Background/objectives: Diabetic macular edema (DME) is a significant cause of visual impairment, often treated with anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) agents. However, some patients do not respond adequately to this treatment. This study aims to evaluate the contribution of the intravitreal dexamethasone (DEX) implant as a second-line treatment in DME patients with insufficient response to anti-VEGF therapy or with high treatment burden., Methods: This retrospective multicenter cohort study was conducted across seven clinical sites in Switzerland. The study included eyes with active DME that had been pretreated with anti-VEGF for at least six months before receiving DEX therapy. Data were extracted from electronic patient records, focusing on best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), central subfield thickness (CST), and injection frequency., Results: A total of 95 eyes from 89 patients (38.8% females, mean age 65.6 ± 9.1 years, follow-up time 80.6 ± 38.5 [13.5-166.7] months) were analyzed. Prior to the first DEX implant, eyes had undergone an average of 16.0 ± 13.3 anti-VEGF injections over 32.5 ± 22.4 months. Post-DEX treatment, 22.1% of eyes received DEX monotherapy, 44.2% received a combination of DEX and anti-VEGF, 25.3% continued with anti-VEGF monotherapy, and 8.4% received no further treatment. The number of anti-VEGF injections decreased significantly from 6.4 ± 3.1 in the year before DEX to 1.6 ± 2.4 in the year after DEX ( p < 0.001). BCVA remained stable (0.4 ± 0.3 logMAR at baseline, 0.4 ± 0.5 logMAR at 24 months, p = 0.2), while CST improved from 477.7 ± 141.0 to 320.4 ± 125.5 μm ( p < 0.001), and the presence of retinal fluid decreased from 98.0% to 61.1% ( p = 0.021). During follow-up, 26.3% of eyes required glaucoma medication, 4.2% underwent glaucoma surgery, and 1.1% needed cataract surgery., Conclusions: In real-world clinical settings, the addition of DEX to anti-VEGF therapy in DME patients significantly reduces treatment burden and retinal fluid while maintaining visual function. Treatment decisions should balance anatomical and functional outcomes, considering individual patient needs.

Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) holds promise in enhancing the care of various retinal vascular diseases, including neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD). Given nAMD's vascular nature and the distinct vasculature of macular neovascularization (MNV), detailed analysis is expected to gain significance. Research in artificial intelligence (AI) indicates that en-face OCTA views may offer superior predictive capabilities than spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) images, highlighting the necessity to identify key vascular parameters. Analyzing vasculature could facilitate distinguishing MNV subtypes and refining diagnosis. Future studies correlating OCTA parameters with clinical data might prompt a revised classification system. However, the combined utilization of qualitative and quantitative OCTA biomarkers to enhance the accuracy of diagnosing disease activity remains underdeveloped. Discrepancies persist regarding the optimal biomarker for indicating an active lesion, warranting comprehensive prospective studies for validation. AI holds potential in extracting valuable insights from the vast datasets within OCTA, enabling researchers and clinicians to fully exploit its OCTA imaging capabilities. Nevertheless, challenges pertaining to data quantity and quality pose significant obstacles to AI advancement in this field. Purpose: Epiretinal membranes (ERM) pose a common challenge in vitreoretinal pathology, often causing vision impairment in older adults. The Preceyes Surgical System (PSS) supports the surgical removal of ERM through robot-assisted membrane peeling (RA-MP). This study compares surgical times and iatrogenic hemorrhages between manual membrane peeling (MMP) and RA-MP using PSS., Methods: Nine patients underwent RA-MP with PSS, whereas 16 patients (18 eyes) underwent MMP for comparative analysis. Surgical durations were categorized into RA-MP, manual forceps utilization in PSS surgeries (mRA-MP), and traditional MMP. Cumulative manual manipulation duration (cMMP), instrument grasps, and intraoperative hemorrhages were statistically analyzed using the Mann-Whitney U test., Results: RA-MP showed significantly longer peeling times compared to MMP (P < 0.001). Flap initiation grasps were similar between methods (P = 0.86), RA-MP demonstrated a significant reduction in peeling grasps (P = 0.01) and mean grasps per minute (P < 0.001). Although RA-MP resulted in fewer hemorrhages, the difference did not reach statistical significance relative to MMP (P = 0.08)., Discussion: Although RA-MP tended to extend surgical time, it offered advantages in reducing tissue trauma and intraoperative hemorrhages. Further research is needed to explore the learning curve for novice surgeons and evaluate the safety profile of RA-MP., Translational Relevance: RA-MP may offer potential advantages over manual surgery, particularly in terms of reduced tissue trauma and intraoperative hemorrhages. Despite its longer duration compared with manual techniques, RA-MP may lead to fewer grasping maneuvers and lower rates of hemorrhages, thereby enhancing the safety and precision of vitreoretinal surgeries.

Introduction: The purpose of this study was to examine N-acetyl aspartate (NAA)/creatine (Cr) and glutamate, glutamine, and gamma-aminobutyric acid complex (Glx)/Cr levels in patients with obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and healthy controls' orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) and caudate nucleus (CN) by proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) method and to investigate their relationship with oxidative stress markers glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and superoxide dismutase (SOD)., Methods: This study included patients with OCD (n = 25) and healthy controls (n = 25) ranging in age from 18 to 65. We used the ELISA method to evaluate serum SOD and GPx levels. Levels of NAA/Cr and Glx/Cr in the orbitofrontal cortex and caudate nucleus were measured using the 1H-MRS method., Results: Our study did not detect statistically significant differences in the orbitofrontal cortex Glx/Cr and NAA/Cr levels between the OCD patients and the control group. OCD patients exhibited a decrease in NAA/Cr levels, consistent with impaired neuronal integration, and an increase in Glx/Cr levels, consistent with hyperactivation, in the caudate nucleus compared to the control group. We observed a negative correlation between NAA/Cr levels in the caudate nucleus and the levels of SOD and GPx., Conclusions: Our study is the first to assess CN and OFC together in OCD patients using 3 T MR, investigating the relationship between neurometabolite concentrations and oxidative stress parameters. The negative correlation we observed between NAA/Cr levels and SOD and GPx in the caudate nucleus suggests that increased oxidative stress in this brain region in OCD patients may contribute to impaired neuronal integration and functionality., (Copyright © 2024 Elsevier B.V. Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of a subthreshold micropulse laser (SML) in patients with central serous chorioretinopathy (CSCR)., Methods: Retrospective clinical study conducted at the Departments of Ophthalmology at a university and a municipal hospital in Zurich, Switzerland. We enrolled acute and chronic CSCR patients with persistent subretinal fluid (SRF) treated with SML. Two treatment protocols (fluorescein/indocyanine green angiography or optical coherence tomography guided) were evaluated for efficacy after 3 and 6 months. The primary outcomes of the study were reduction and percentage of eyes with complete resolution of SRF 3 and 6 months after SML treatment. Secondary endpoints included changes in central subfield thickness (CST) and visual acuity (VA) after 3 and 6 months., Results: The study involved 37 eyes (35 patients, 48.6% chronic). A statistically significant reduction in SRF height and CST could be shown, irrespective of SRF duration, type of CSCR, or chosen guidance after 3 and 6 months: SRF - 40 µm (p < 0.01), CST - 52 µm (p < 0.01). Percentage of eyes with complete resolution of fluid at 3 and 6 months after SML were 24.3 and 21.6%, respectively. No statistically significant functional improvement (VA) could be shown. Multivariable regression and linear mixed regression analyses did not identify statistically significant differences in SRF reduction, CMT change, or VA improvement with respect to the type of CSCR or the treatment plan used (p > 0.05)., Conclusion: The effectiveness of SML in CSCR is under continuous debate. Our study findings demonstrate structural but only little functional changes with SML. Electroretinography (ERG) provides crucial insights into retinal function and the integrity of the visual pathways. However, ERG assessments classically require a complicated technical background with costly equipment. In addition, the placement of corneal or conjunctival electrodes is not always tolerated by the patients, which restricts the measurement for pediatric evaluations. Objective: A bidirectional relationship between family functioning and parenting styles and Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is proposed. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of ADHD symptoms on parenting styles and the general functionality of the family as well as symptoms of depression and anxiety., Methods: 73 children with ADHD (56%) and 56 controls (43%) (a total of 129 participants, 31% female, 69% male) with a mean age of 11.3 (7-17, n: 129) were included in the study, which was conducted in Gaziantep University Hospital Child Psychiatry Department in 2022. The participants completed psychometric scales., Results: Parents of children with ADHD showed higher positive parenting scores than the control group ( p  < 0.05). Inconsistent discipline scores were substantially higher in the ADHD combined subtype (14.38 ± 5.2) than in the attention deficit dominant group (17.59 ± 3.96) In addition, a strong correlation was found between familial functionality scores and ADHD severity in the ADHD attention deficit dominant subtype (r:0.601; p:0.027) and as ADHD severity increased, family functionality decreased., Conclusions: This study shows that parents of children with ADHD have different parenting styles and ADHD affects the overall functionality of the family in the Turkish sample.

This is the first study to show both dynamic thiol-disulfide balance and oxidative stress levels in patients with Fabry disease (FD). This prospective study consists of 30 FD patients and 30 healthy controls. Thiol and disulfide values of the study groups were evaluated using a new, cost-effective and fully automatic colorimetric method. A total of 60 subjects were included in the study. A statistically significant difference was found between the patient and control groups for native and total thiol levels ( p  < 0.001). In addition, disulfide levels were significantly higher in FD patients compared with the control group ( p  < 0.003). Native thiol levels showed significantly negative correlation with lysosomal globotriaosylceramide, total oxidant status (TOS), and oxidative stress index (OSI) levels. In addition, a positive correlation was found between disulfide/natural thiol and disulfide/total thiol ratios and TOS, OSI, and blood urea nitrogen. We found total antioxidant status levels were lower in the patient group compared to the control group, while TOS and OSI levels were higher and were statistically significant. This study highlights for the first time a novel, cost-effective and fully automated measurement of thiol-disulfide levels in patients with FD. While episcleritis is a benign disease only affecting the episclera, scleritis is an ocular inflammation with typically severe pain and not rarely affecting adjacent tissue.Scleritis is classified into anterior and posterior forms. Anterior scleritis is further subdivided into diffuse, nodular, necrotizing with inflammation, and necrotizing scleritis without inflammation (scleromalacia perforans). Purpose: The Preceyes Surgical System (PSS) is a robotic assistive device that may enhance surgical precision. This study assessed pre- and intra-operative times and surgeons' perceptions of robot-assisted epiretinal membrane peeling (RA-MP)., Methods: We analyzed the time requirement of three main tasks: the preparation of the PSS (I), patient preparation (II), and surgery (III). Following surgery, the surgeons were asked questions about their experience., Results: RA-MP was performed in nine eyes of nine patients. Task I required an average time of 12.3 min, initially taking 15 min but decreasing to 6 min in the last surgery. Task II showed a mean time of 47.2 (range of 36-65) min. Task III had a mean time of 72.4 (range of 57-100) min. A mean time of 27.9 (range of 9-46) min was necessary for RA-MP. The responses to the questionnaire revealed a trend towards increasing ease and reduced stress as familiarity with the PSS increased., Conclusions: A substantial reduction in pre- and intra-operative times, decreasing to a total of 115 min, was demonstrated. RA-MP was positively anticipated by the surgeons and led to no hand or arm strain while being more complex than manual MP.

Objectives: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus (MRS) has originated, spread extensively, and become a prominent source of bacterial infections in both human and animal., Methods: We report the prevalence, genetic diversity, and antimicrobial resistance pattern of Staphylococcus pseudintermedius and Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from dogs and cats with eye discharges., Results: A total of 12 (6.0%) coagulase-positives staphylococci were identified as (6/200, 3%) S. aureus and (6/200, 3%) S. pseudintermedius. The phenotypic methicillin resistance of S. aureus and S. pseudintermedius were 50.0% (3/6) and 16.7% (1/6), respectively. None of the isolates showed biofilm formation in the microtiter plate assay. The highest resistance (50.0%) for S. pseudintermedius strains was detected against clindamycin and tetracycline. 67.0% of S. aureus isolates were resistant to penicillin-G. The PCR analysis conducted for detection of mecA gene indicated that only one S. aureus isolated from a cat was mecA gene positive. Phylogenetic analysis based on repetitive sequence-based PCR (rep-PCR) showed that all strains were typable and generated PCR products ranging from 800 bp to 4,400 bp. The lineages ST241 and the novel ST2361 in multi-locus sequence typing (MLST) analysis were detected in one methicillin-susceptible S. pseudintermedius and methicillin-resistant S. pseudintermedius of dogs, respectively. In addition, the lineages ST4155 and ST7217 of two methicillin-resistant S. aureus strains of cats were connected epidemiologically to previously reported cases., Conclusions: These results indicate epidemiologically related strains (ST241, ST4155, and ST7217) transferring between animals and humans. Therefore, the strategies to combat the widespread MRS should be based on collaboration between human and veterinary medicine under the One Health concept.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common clinical syndrome characterized by a sudden decline in or loss of kidney function. AKI is not only associated with substantial morbidity and mortality but also with increased risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD). AKI is classically defined and staged based on serum creatinine concentration and urine output rates. The etiology of AKI is conceptually classified into three general categories: prerenal, intrarenal, and postrenal. Although this classification may be useful for establishing a differential diagnosis, AKI has mostly multifactorial, and pathophysiologic features that can be divided into different categories. Acute tubular necrosis, caused by either ischemia or nephrotoxicity, is common in the setting of AKI. The timely and accurate identification of AKI and a better understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms that cause kidney dysfunction are essential. In this review, we consider various medical causes of AKI and summarize the most recent updates in the pathogenesis of AKI.

This study aimed to investigate the effects on fracture healing of locally applied boric acid (BA) with and without low-level laser therapy (LLLT). A unicortical femoral defect was surgically created on the anterolateral surface of proximal femur of each subject. The subjects, totaling 56 Wistar albino rats, were randomly allocated into four groups (n = 14 each): control, LLLT (λ = 905 μm, 10,000 Hz, 25 mW, and peak power 25 W), BA (40 mg/kg), and BA + LLLT groups. On the 30th day, the highest radiological score was recorded for the BA + LLLT group (3.63 [2-4]), followed by the BA (3.38 [2.75-3.75]), control (3 [2-3.25]), and LLLT (2.5 [1.25-3]) groups. On days 15 and 30 post-surgery, malondialdehyde levels were significantly lower among the BA + LLLT group compared to the control group (p < 0.001). On day 30, superoxide dismutase, catalase, and alkaline phosphatase levels were highest in the BA + LLLT group compared to the control group (p < 0.001). When the histopathological, immunofluorescence, and immunohistochemical findings on the 15th and 30th days were compared with the control group, a statistically significant difference was found for the BA and BA + LLLT groups (p ˂ 0.05). Objective: To evaluate the accuracy for 2 smartwatches with oximetry technology and optical wrist heart rate (HR) or single-lead Electrocardiography (ECG) technology (Fenix 5X Plus [GF5xp], Garmin Ltd and Apple Watch 6 [AppW6], Apple Inc, respectively) versus reference methods (ECG and transmittance pulse oximetry [TPO], respectively) in measuring HR and peripheral oxygen saturation of hemoglobin (SpO2) in cats., Animals: 10 male client-owned cats aged 8 to 12 months and weighing 3.2 to 4.5 kg., Procedures: All cats that were presented for elective castration at the Atatürk University Animal Hospital between March 10 and April 15, 2022, were considered for enrollment. Monitoring of HR and SpO2 during anesthesia was performed with a 3-lead ECG and transmittance pulse oximetry, respectively, connected to a multiparameter monitor (reference methods) along with a GF5xp and a AppW6. Agreement between reference methods and the smartwatches were assessed by the Bland-Altman plot, in which the differences (%) between methods were plotted against their mean HR or SpO2 (reference method measurement - test device measurement) and the limits of agreement (mean ± 1.96 × SD)., Results: Compared with ECG measurements of HR, GF5xp had superior bias (-0.1%) and limit of agreement (LoA, 3.0 to -3.3%) versus those of the AppW6 (bias, 0.2%; LoA, 3.7 to -3.4%). Compared with TPO measurements of SpO2, AppW6 had superior bias (0.2%) and LoA (3.0% and -2.5%) versus those of the GF5xp (bias, -2.1%; LoA, 0.2 to -4.4%)., Clinical Relevance: Results indicated that the GF5xp and AppW6 exhibited high accuracy in evaluating HR and SpO2 in cats when compared with the reference methods. However, it should be noted that these comparisons were made in anesthetized patients without any systemic disease.

Background: Firework-related ocular injuries (FWROI) are a major cause of preventable visual impairment. This study aimed to analyze the occurrence and outcome of FWROI in Switzerland., Methods: This retrospective multicenter study included patients with FWROI from seven centers in Switzerland from January 2009 to August 2020. Demographic information, type of injuries, medical and surgical treatments, the best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) at baseline and end of follow-up, occurrence and type of secondary complications, and duration of hospitalization were analyzed., Results: A total of 105 patients (119 eyes) with a mean age of 27.1 ± 15.9 years were included in the study (71.4% male patients; 29.5% underage). Most injuries occurred around New Year's Eve (32.4%) and the Swiss national holiday on 1 August (60.9%). The most common anterior segment findings were conjunctival or corneal foreign bodies (58%), whereas Berlin's edema was the most common posterior segment finding (11.4%). Globe ruptures were found in four patients. The mean BCVA in all patients at first presentation was 0.4 ± 0.8 logMAR and improved to 0.3 ± 0.8 logMAR at last follow-up. A primary surgical intervention was performed in 48 eyes (40.3%). Hospitalization directly after the trauma was necessary for 18 patients for a mean of 5.8 ± 4.1 days, and a total of 4.9 ± 7.6 follow-up visits were needed., Conclusion: This study provides the first data on FWROI in Switzerland, which are helpful for further preventive and educational programs and comparisons with other countries., (© 2022.
