While there is a global trend in kelp forests decline, sub-Antarctic Beagle Channel kelp ecosystems are among the most stable and extensive in the world, acting as a climatic refuge, indicating its high conservation value. Nevertheless, these coastal ecosystems are increasingly exposed to anthropogenic drivers that can affect kelp strategies and promote their replacement by turf. This study evaluated the urban impact of a coastal city in the Beagle Channel (Ushuaia, 54° S 68° W) on giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) population dynamics. Seasonal samplings were conducted between 2020 and 2023 in two contrasting sites: an urban site directly exposed to Ushuaia pressures and a non-urban site. Our results indicate a reduction in both kelp adult density and kelp recruitment at the urban site. Here, high sediment inputs were the main factor affecting kelp recruitment, but higher density of potential grazers, and changes in the understory macroalgae assemblage were further observed. Morpho-functional composition and sediment trapped within the macroalgae suggest the prevalence of turf-forming algae dominating the urban site's understory assemblage. If neglected, the decline in kelp recruitment rates and the replacement of the forest by turf could eventually lead to a local loss of this urban-influenced sub-Antarctic kelp forest. Accurately quantifying primary productivity in highly dynamic subtidal rocky habitats, particularly those with high canopy-forming macroalgae, is inherently challenging, leading to a scarcity of information. Kelp primary productivity has primarily been assessed through (1) quantification of carbon standing stock and biomass, which provides limited information on rates of primary productivity; (2) ex-situ incubations in the laboratory, in which the obtained values may not represent the actual productivity of a community; and (3) in-situ incubations in detached plants or including only the fronds. To address this issue, we describe a versatile methodology—the Benthic Incubation Chamber (BIC); and tested it along the morphologically diverse Portuguese continental coast. BIC is designed to assess in-situ primary productivity in a variety of benthic communities (high and low canopy), fulfilling the existing need to measure productivity in highly dynamic, shallow subtidal habitats. The method involves incubation chambers where total oxygen flux, temperature, and photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) are simultaneously recorded. From those measurements, Net Community Productivity (NCP) and community respiration (CR) for a given biomass and water volume were derived for each chamber. Incubations performed in the Portuguese continental coast demonstrated the feasibility of this technique to obtain reliable in-situ net primary productivity values in a range of subtidal habitats. The spread of morning glory (Ipomoea spp.) in Japanese soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr.) fields has severely decreased soybean yields. Field levees are believed to be a source of this invasion. The introduction of Zoysia japonica Steud. is expected to suppress weed growth and reduce the required labor for weed management on the levees. In this study, field experiments were conducted on the soybean levees of turf (Z. japonica), bare, and weed (mainly broad leaf weeds such as white clover) from 2017 to 2019 to compare its effects on the occurrence, growth, and seed production of I. hederacea (L.) Jacq. var. integriuscula A. Gray. The canopy height in the turf levee was the lowest, and the vegetation cover rate was the highest. At the flowering and fruiting stage of I. hederacea var. integriuscula (September), the largest number of I. hederacea var. integriuscula that survived were on the turf levee; however, the plant length, dry weight, and the number of fruits were the least. Additionally, the stems of the morning glory on the turf levee were slight and spindly, and their growth and seed productivity were suppressed. Consequently, vegetation conversion to Z. japonica on the soybean field levees can be an effective strategy to suppress the colonization and growth of morning glory, thereby, improving soybean yields. Background and Aims Changes in kelp abundances on regional scales have been highly variable over the past half-century owing to strong effects of local and regional drivers. Here, we assess patterns and dominant environmental variables causing spatial and interspecific variability in kelp persistence and resilience to change in Nova Scotia over the past 40 years. Methods We conducted a survey of macrophyte abundance at 251 sites spanning the Atlantic coast of Nova Scotia from 2019 to 2022. We use this dataset to describe spatial variability in kelp species abundances, compare species occurrences to surveys conducted in 1982 and assess changes in kelp abundance over the past 22 years. We then relate spatial and temporal patterns in abundance and resilience to environmental metrics. Key Results Our results show losses of sea urchins and the cold-tolerant kelp species Alaria esculenta , Saccorhiza dermatodea and Agarum clathratum in Nova Scotia since 1982 in favour of the more warm-tolerant kelps Saccharina latissima and Laminaria digitata. Kelp abundances have increased slightly since 2000, and Saccharina latissima and L. digitata are widely abundant in the region today. The highest kelp cover occurs on wave-exposed shores and at sites where temperatures have remained below thresholds for growth (21 °C) and mortality (23 °C). Moreover, kelp has recovered from turf dominance following losses at some sites during a warm period from 2010 to 2012. Conclusions Our results indicate that dramatic changes in kelp community composition and a loss of sea urchin herbivory as a dominant driver of change in the system have occurred in Nova Scotia over the past 40 years. However, a broad-scale shift to turf-dominance has not occurred, as predicted, and our results suggest that resilience and persistence are still a feature of kelp forests in the region despite rapid warming over the past several decades. Turfgrass systems may offer opportunities for overcoming some constraints on the successful implementation of weed biocontrol. Of the roughly 16.4 million ha of turfgrass in the USA, ≈60–75% are in residential lawns and 3% are golf turf. Annual expenditures for a standard herbicide treatment regimen for residential turf are estimated to be ≈US$326 ha−1, about 2–3‐fold greater than that for USA corn and soybean growers. Expenditures can be >US$3000 ha−1 for control of certain weeds such as Poa annua in high‐value areas including golf fairways or greens, but those applications are made to far smaller areas. Regulatory actions and consumer preferences are creating market opportunities for alternatives to synthetic herbicides in both commercial and consumer markets, but the size of these markets and willingness‐to‐pay are poorly documented. Turfgrass sites are intensively managed, yet despite the ability to modify site conditions through irrigation, mowing and fertility management, microbial biocontrol agents tested thus far have not provided the consistently high levels of weed control expected in the market. Recent advances in microbial bioherbicide products may offer a path to overcome many of the obstacles to success. No single herbicide will control the diversity of turfgrass weeds, nor will any single biocontrol agent or biopesticide. Successful development of weed biocontrol for turfgrass systems will require numerous, effective biocontrol agents for the many weed species found in turfgrass environments, as well as a deeper understanding of different turfgrass market segments, and weed management expectations for each segment. © 2023 The Author. BACKGROUND: Due to the increased use of artificial turf, turf burn has become a common sports injury. Turf burn is caused by exposed skin sliding on artificial turf. Health complications, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus outbreaks, sepsis, and pneumonia, have been linked to untreated turf burns, and many athletes have been turning to social media for advice and companionship regarding their sports injuries. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study is to categorize and quantitatively assess the percentage of turf burn-related posts on TikTok based on creator type, content, athletes experiences, and treatment and prevention methods. With these data, we not only investigate if there is room for health care professionals to assist in the distribution of evidence-based health education to athletes to counteract misinformation but also investigate if there is a potential audience of athletes on TikTok who have the potential to develop problematic responses to injuries. METHODS: By using the Discover page on TikTok, we searched for the term turf burn on October 17, 2021. In total, 100 videos were analyzed. Videos were categorized and analyzed based on creator type, content, experiences of the athletes, and treatment and prevention methods. The number of likes and comments was recorded. RESULTS: Most videos (98/100, 98%) were created by athletes. A small number of videos (2/100, 2%) were created by health care professionals. In terms of content, most videos (67/100, 67%) displayed turf burns. A small amount of videos (15/100, 15%) showed the incidents when turf burns were acquired, while around one-quarter of the videos (23/100, 23%) demonstrated the treatment and prevention of turf burns. Of the 23 treatment and prevention videos, a minority (4/23, 17%) showed the preferred treatment of turf burns, while most videos (19/23, 83%) showed nonpreferred treatments. The smallest amount of videos (2/100, 2%) were about turf burn education. Most of the videos created by athletes (56/98, 57%) depicted the negative experiences that patients had with turf burns. Some videos (37/98, 38%) depicted neutral experiences, while the smallest amount of videos (5/98, 5%) depicted positive experiences. CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests that there is a potential audience of athletes on TikTok who could develop problematic responses to sports injuries, such as turf burns, as most of the people who post videos are athletes, and many of the posts demonstrate negative experiences associated with turf burns. TikTok is a growing social media platform that should be studied to determine if it can be used to create a social support group for injured athletes to prevent the progression of negative emotional responses into problematic responses. Physicians should also have a role in establishing their social media presence on TikTok and offering evidence-based advice to athletes while disproving misinformation on TikTok.

This research seeks to analyze and compare the performance of impervious surface as control (O), sandy loam substrate, gravel, gravel with geocell layer (GGE), rosemary (R), rosemary with geocell layer (RGE), turf (T), and turf with geocell layer (TGE) in the reduction of rainfall-runoff volume, time to start runoff (TSR), runoff coefficient (C), time to end runoff (TER), peak flow (PF) rate, time to peak (TP), and time base (TB) under three conditions of rainfall, horizontal runoff, and the combination of rainfall and runoff in a slope of 5% using a rainfall simulator. Regarding the factorial results of the effective parameters of the test mode and the test sample on TSR, TER, TP, TB, C, and PF, there was a significant difference at the 5% level between the data in all cases. In all cases, GGE treatment performed better compared to the rest of the test groups in reducing runoff and cumulative volume. On the other hand, treatments O and GGE experienced the highest and lowest flow rate, respectively. For a given test condition, the value of C is the lowest for the GGE treatment. The present study aims to evaluate the performance of the impervious surface as a control (O), sandy loam substrate (SL), gravel (G), gravel with geocell layer (GGE), rosemary (R), rosemary with geocell layer (RRE), turf (T), and turf with geocell layer (TGE) in the reduction of runoff volume, time-to-start runoff (TR), runoff coefficient (C), time-to end runoff (TER), peak flow rate (PF), time to peak (TP), and time base (TB) in the laboratory dimension under three different scenarios of rainfall intensity and two different slopes using a rainfall simulator. The results revealed a significant difference between the data at the level of 5% in all cases. Generally, three rainfall scenarios for all hydrological parameters TR, TER, TP, TB, C, and PF were classified into different groups. In all cases, GGE treatment performed better than that of the rest of the test groups in reducing runoff and cumulative volume. Further, treatments O and GGE experienced the highest and lowest flow rates, respectively. For a specific scenario of rainfall intensity and slope, the value of C is the lowest for GGE treatment. Finally, the implementation of geocell in the pavements was able to delay the time to start runoff. The ground has long been cited as a key contributing factor for injury risk in the cross-country phase of eventing. The current study aimed to develop a practically useful standardized protocol for measuring eventing cross country ground. Data collection was split into three phases: Phase 1 (Validation), Phase 2 (Expansion of data set), and Phase 3 (Threshold establishment). During Phase 1, data from nine event courses were collected using an Orono Biomechanical Surface Tester (OBST), Vienna Surface Tester (VST), Lang Penetrometer, Going Stick, and moisture meter. Using linear regression, 80% of the variability in cushioning measured with the OBST was predicted from moisture and VST measurements (p < 0.001). In Phase 2, objective data from 81 event courses and subjective assessments from 180 event riders were collected. In Phase 3, k-means cluster analysis was used to classify the courses into ten clusters based on average course measurements of moisture, cushioning, firmness, stiffness, depth, and coefficient of restitution. Based on cluster membership, course average subjective data (16 courses) were compared using a General Linear Model. Significant differences (p < 0.05) in subjective impact firmness (p = 0.038) and subjective cushioning (p = 0.010) were found between clusters. These data and cluster thresholds provide an event course baseline for future comparisons.

Severe bermudagrass mite (Aceria cynodoniensis Sayed) infestation stunts turfgrass growth and reduces the aesthetic and recreational value of managed bermudagrass. Management practices, such as fertilization, mowing, and irrigation, may impact bermudagrass mite infestation and damage, but empirical evidence is lacking. Two 20 wk experiments were conducted with potted bermudagrass in a greenhouse or nursery to evaluate the effect of varying nitrogen rates (0, 24.5, or 49 kg N/ha), mowing heights (1.3, 2.5, 3.8, or 5 cm), and irrigation rates (60%, 100%, or 140% evapotranspiration [ET] rate) on the densities of witch's brooms (i.e. stunted and deformed terminals symptomatic of infestation) and bermudagrass mites. Increasing nitrogen fertility from 0 to 49 kg N/ha increased witch's broom and bermudagrass mite densities by 292% and 339%, respectively. Bermudagrass fertilized with nitrogen maintained higher turf quality than unfertilized grass despite greater mite damage. Decreasing irrigation from 140% to 60% of the ET rate also increased witch's broom densities by 124%. Mowing height did not consistently affect witch's broom or mite densities. Witch's broom and mite densities were positively correlated and followed a general trend with greater densities in April–August and a decline in densities in August–October. These findings suggest that nitrogen fertilization and water stress influence bermudagrass mite damage. Thus, limiting nitrogen fertilization to a level necessary to maintain turfgrass health and quality (0.5 kg N/ha) and minimizing turfgrass water stress can complement current chemical control strategies as part of an integrated pest management program. For a millennium, turf was the primary building material in Iceland. It was used for dwellings, outhouses, boundary walls, raised roads, and other man-made structures. Turf is known as an earthen building material in many countries, especially in northern latitudes, but the knowledge of how to build using it has mostly disappeared. As turf was used well into the twentieth century in Iceland, the skilled craft of locating, harvesting, and building with this material has been retained. This is also facilitated by still standing historical buildings and the need for continual maintenance. Archaeologists also benefit from learning about turf as they frequently interpret the remains of turf walls in the archaeological record. This means that Iceland is in a unique position to disseminate knowledge on this important intangible heritage. However, because of a lack of adequate funding and strategies for maintaining the craft, these skills are in danger of disappearing in Iceland as well. In this article, we discuss the state of knowledge on turf, what turf is, the preservation of the intangible building heritage, the revival of interest in turf, and how the various strands of evidence serve as background for the interpretation of turf as heritage and as an archaeological material.

Genome editing technology circumvents crossing and selfing, enabling targeted modifications to multiple gene copies in a single generation while maintaining the heterozygous context of many polyploid genomes. Bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum Flüggé; 2n=4x=40) is an apomictic, tetraploid C4 species that is widely grown in the southeastern United States as forage in beef cattle production and utility turf. The chlorophyll biosynthesis gene magnesium chelatase (MgCh) was selected as a rapid readout target for establishing genome editing in tetraploid bahiagrass. Vectors containing sgRNAs, Cas9 and nptII were delivered to callus cultures by biolistics. Edited plants were characterized through PCR-based assays and DNA sequencing, and mutagenesis frequencies as high as 99% of Illumina reads were observed. Sequencing of wild type (WT) bahiagrass revealed a high level of sequence variation in MgCh likely due to the presence of at least two copies with possibly eight different alleles, including pseudogenes. MgCh mutants exhibited visible chlorophyll depletion with up to 82% reductions in leaf greenness. Two lines displayed progression of editing over time which was linked to somatic editing. Apomictic progeny of a chimeric MgCh editing event were obtained and allowed identification of uniformly edited progeny plants among a range of chlorophyll depletion phenotypes. Sanger sequencing of a highly edited mutant revealed elevated frequency of a WT allele, probably due to frequent homology-directed repair (HDR). To our knowledge these experiments comprise the first report of genome editing applied in perennial, warm-season turf or forage grasses. Territorial use rights in fisheries (TURFs) are coastal territories assigned to fishermen for the exclusive extraction of marine resources. Recent evidence shows that the incentives that arise from these systems can improve fisheries sustainability. Although research on TURFs has increased in recent years, important questions regarding the social and ecological dynamics underlying their success remain largely unanswered. In particular, in order to create new successful TURFs, it is critical to comprehend how fish movement over different distances affects the development of sustainable fishing practices within a TURF. In theory, excessive spillover outside a TURF will generate incentives to overharvest. However, many TURFs have proven successful even when targeted species move over distances far greater than the TURF's size. A common attribute among some of these successful systems is the presence of inter-TURF cooperation arrangements. This raises the question of how different levels and types of cooperation affect the motivations for overharvesting driven by the movement of fish outside the TURF. In this paper, we examine equilibrium yields under different levels of inter-TURF cooperation (from partial to full) and varying degrees of asymmetry across TURFs of both biological capacity and benefit-sharing. We find that partial cooperation can improve yields even with an unequal distribution of shared benefits and asymmetric carrying capacity. However, cooperation arrangements are unstable if the sharing agreement and biological asymmetries are misaligned. Remarkably, we find that asymmetry in the system can lead to the creation of voluntary no-take zones.

Significant research has focused on North American dirt and synthetic Thoroughbred racing surfaces. Turfgrass racing surfaces have received less consideration. Basic information, including climate and turfgrass species, can be documented relatively easily. However, a key characteristic, the particle size distribution of the growing medium, is not readily available for turf tracks. Particle size distribution and the deviation from nominal values are important to infiltration rate, shear strength, and turf health, as well as being critical for the selection of top-dressing and divot repair sand. The primary difficulty with obtaining the particle size distribution is the relatively large quantity of material required for traditional sedimentation test methods. Sampling an active racing surface could present a risk to the horses and riders. Laser diffraction testing methods present an opportunity to use much smaller samples. The use of smaller samples introduces new questions about the ability of a small sample to represent a large area, such as a racetrack. Tests were carried out with high resolution sampling at one racetrack. By sampling a large number of locations, 96 locations on a single racetrack, the variability of the track could be evaluated, and an eight-sample protocol was developed. Using the eight-location protocol, 22 additional turf racetracks throughout North America were sampled. A total of 23 turf racetracks were tested, representing all three of the designs used for North American turf racetracks. By looking at the three different track designs: engineered profile, engineered profile with fiber, and native soil, appropriate testing parameters and measurements were identified. While the primary objective was to understand turf racetracks, this unique data set also provided a method to investigate the applicability of laser diffraction for the analysis of soil samples. Mineralogy and organic content had previously been identified as important in the measurement of particle size distribution using laser diffraction. Mineralogy and organic content were determined for samples from each surface using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and loss on ignition. The PSD of the three types of turfgrass horse racing surfaces showed significant differences between native soil (N), engineered surfaces without synthetic fibers (EWOF), and engineered surfaces with synthetic fibers (EWF). These basic design descriptions were also found to be sufficient for making reasonable estimates of the settings used in the machine configuration and sample preparation. A single refractive index was used for the entire range of samples in this group; however, the sample quantity tested was different for the three different types of track designs. This article presents perennial grasses, without whose presence it is impossible to imagine the natural environment as well as agriculture, recreation, sport, and satisfactory aesthetics of the environment. Grasses have by far the widest distribution of all flowering families, grow on every continent, and are part of all the major biomes of the terrestrial world. They not only occur in almost all types of natural landscapes but also find a prominent place in the agricultural landscape. Grasses are not only a source of food for people (wheat, rice, maize, millet, etc.) and feed for livestock, but also a source of energy, building materials, a component of paper pulp, etc. Moreover, grasses have numerous uses to enhance the beauty of the surrounding landscape, bring relaxation, health, and comfort to people (i.e., gardens, parks, and sports facilities), and support land protection. This article describes just these, not often mentioned, and characterized grass uses, with an emphasis on the relationship between different species of perennial grasses and their functionality. Water utilities incentivize turf replacement to promote water conservation, but the effects of such programs have received limited evaluations. In 2014, the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD) undertook an unprecedented investment to incentive turf replacement throughout Southern California in response to a serious Statewide drought. Turfgrasses are ground cover plants with intensive fibrous roots to encounter different edaphic stresses. The major edaphic stressors of turfgrasses often include soil salinity, drought, flooding, acidity, soil compaction by heavy traffic, unbalanced soil nutrients, heavy metals, and soil pollutants, as well as many other unfavorable soil conditions. The stressors are the results of either naturally occurring soil limitations or anthropogenic activities. Under any of these stressful conditions, turfgrass quality will be reduced along with the loss of economic values and ability to perform its recreational and functional purposes. Amongst edaphic stresses, soil salinity is one of the major stressors as it is highly connected with drought and heat stresses of turfgrasses. Four major salinity sources are naturally occurring in soils: recycled water as the irrigation, regular fertilization, and air-borne saline particle depositions. Although there are only a few dozen grass species from the Poaceae family used as turfgrasses, these turfgrasses vary from salinity-intolerant to halophytes interspecifically and intraspecifically. Enhancement of turfgrass salinity tolerance has been a very active research and practical area as well in the past several decades. This review attempts to target new developments of turfgrasses in those soil salinity stresses mentioned above and provides insight for more promising turfgrasses in the future with improved salinity tolerances to meet future turfgrass requirements. While numerous studies have evaluated National Football League injuries, there is limited literature evaluating hamstring injuries sustained in games. Our primary aim is to analyze the effect of player position on the relative incidence of hamstring injuries in the National Football League. Our secondary aims are to analyze the effects of field surface, week of the season, and short rest weeks. Official National Football League game books containing injury data from the 2013–2016 regular seasons were used. Data were analyzed to determine the incidence of hamstring injuries by field surface, rest, and week of the season. Field surface was considered either turf or grass. Short rest was considered four days. Relative incidence of hamstring injuries by position was performed with standardized incidence ratios. P values < 0.05 were considered statistically significant. Seventy-eight qualifying hamstring injuries were identified and included in our analysis. Linebackers had the highest relative incidence per play with a standardized incidence ratio of 2.02 (CI: 1.14–2.91), followed by Defensive Backs (1.62; 95% CI: 1.14–1.62). Offensive linemen and defensive linemen had standardized incidence ratios significantly less than 1. Fifty-seven percent of hamstring injuries occurred on turf fields (p = 0.082). There was no significant difference between the proportion of hamstring injuries that occurred on short rest and the proportion of games played on short rest (p = 0.959). Hamstring injuries were not more likely to occur than the pooled group of all other types of injuries on short rest (p = 0.861). With a 17-week season, the mean week of hamstring injury was 8.05 (95% CI: 7.06–9.04), while the median week was 7.5. Linebackers and Defensive Backs have the highest relative incidence of hamstring injuries compared to other position groups, while offensive and defensive linemen have the lowest. Spring dead spot (SDS), caused by Ophiosphaerella spp., is among the most damaging diseases to hybrid bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon × transvaalensis) in areas where winter dormancy occurs. Management strategies that aid in turfgrass recovery from SDS damage have not been widely studied. An experiment was conducted in Blacksburg, VA, in 2019 and 2020, to determine the influence of various cultural practices on bermudagrass recovery from SDS damage. Fertility and cultivation were applied in the late spring/early summer, which is earlier than normal for cultivation practices for bermudagrass, to test their effectiveness in aiding bermudagrass recovery from SDS damage. The main effects of fertility and cultivation were arranged in a 2 × 3 factorial design with vertical mowing, solid-tine aerification, and no cultivation applied with urea (48.8 kg⋅ha−1 N) sprayed at trial initiation and 2 weeks later or without urea. Plots were assessed for the percent of SDS throughout the study. Data were analyzed as the percent change relative to the initial assessment to measure bermudagrass recovery. The main effect of fertility increased bermudagrass recovery from SDS damage in both 2019 and 2020. The main effects of vertical mowing and solid-tine aerification reduced bermudagrass recovery from SDS damage in 2020. These data suggest that two properly timed nitrogen fertilization applications at 48.8 kg⋅ha−1 optimized bermudagrass recovery from SDS damage, whereas late spring/early summer cultivation without fertility may inhibit bermudagrass recovery.

Non-technical summary As green spaces, lawns are often thought to capture carbon from the atmosphere. However, once mowing, fertlising and irrigation are taken into account, we show that they become carbon sources, at least in the long run. Converting unused urban and rural lawn and grassland to treescapes can make a substantial contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing carbon absorption from the atmosphere. However, it is imperative for governing bodies to put in place appropriate policies and incentives in order to achieve this. Technical summary Mown grass or lawn is a ubiquitous form of vegetation in human-dominated landscapes and it is often claimed to perform an ecosystem service by sequestering soil carbon. If lawn maintenance is included, however, we show that lawns become net carbon emitters. We estimate that globally, if one-third of mown grass in cities was returned to treescapes, 310–1630 million tonnes of carbon could be absorbed from the atmosphere, and up to 43 tonnes of carbon equivalent per hectare of emissions could be avoided over a two-decade time span. We therefore propose that local and central governments introduce policies to incentivise and/or regulate the conversion of underutilised grass into treescapes. Social media summary If unused lawns were planted with trees, a gigaton of carbon could be removed from the atmosphere over two decades.

Kobresia pygmaea meadows are typical of Tibetan Plateau landscapes in the 3,000 to 5,500 m elevation range and constitute the most extensive alpine ecosystem in the world. Kobresia pygmaea forms turf mats that stabilize the surface and shelter the underlying soils from water erosion. Large tracts of the Plateau, however, exhibit signs of ongoing degradation of the turf and erosion of the underlying soil. Despite the crucial role played by K. pygmaea turf mats in the stabilization of the headwaters of major Asian rivers, the mechanisms responsible for their degradation remain poorly investigated. Here we develop a process-based model of land degradation of Tibetan Plateau slopes, which accounts for (i) turf cracking, (ii) water flow concentration in the cracks, (iii) crack widening by scouring, and (iv) sheet-flow erosion. As expected, soil erosion increases with the slope and drainage area (hence the observation of stronger erosion in relatively steep downhill sites). Model simulations indicate that with a sensible set of parameters representative of soil and hydrologic conditions in the region, Tibetan Plateau landscapes are vulnerable to turf mat degradation and soil erosion. As soon as polygonal cracks develop, water flow widens them until the landscape is completely barren. At this point sheet flow eventually erodes the mineral soil leaving behind a highly degraded landscape.

Precision spraying can significantly reduce herbicide input for turf weed management. A major challenge for autonomous precision herbicide spraying is to accurately and reliably detect weeds growing in turf. Deep convolutional neural networks (DCNNs), an important artificial intelligent tool, demonstrated extraordinary capability to learn complex features from images. The feasibility of using DCNNs, including various image classification or object detection neural networks, has been investigated to detect weeds growing in turf. Due to the high level of performance of weed detection, DCNNs are suitable for the ground-based detection and discrimination of weeds growing in turf. However, reliable weed detection may be subject to the influence of weeds (e.g., biotypes, species, densities, and growth stages) and turf factors (e.g., turf quality, mowing height, and dormancy vs. non-dormancy). The present review article summarizes the previous research findings using DCNNs as the machine vision decision system of smart sprayers for precision herbicide spraying, with the aim of providing insights into future research. Purpose Treated wastewaters are reused in agriculture to deal with the water deficit, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. However, they may contain contaminants such as heavy metals that can adversely affect the soil quality and life health. This work aimed to assess the degree of contamination of the soil and the turf leaves of a golf course irrigated in the long term (10 years) by treated wastewaters. Method Analysis of eight heavy metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Mn, Fe and Zn) was carried out at two sites. The first was irrigated by sprinkling (site 1), the second by a drip system (site 2). Results The results showed a generalized contamination of the soil at the two sites. Fe and Mn recorded the highest levels. Cd and Cr contents were significantly higher in the soil of site 1. However, all the heavy metals recorded values below the limits set by the FAO / WHO standards for soil. Turf leaves also exhibited high values of Fe and Mn contents in the two sites. Mn content was significantly higher in in the turf leaves from site 1. The results showed an accumulation of all the metals in turf leaves in which the Fe and Cd contents exceeded the FAO / WHO standards. Conclusion Long-term irrigation results in an accumulation of heavy metals in the soil and in turf leaves. Particular attention should be paid to Cd and Fe for the use of treated wastewater in agriculture. Drip irrigation system would minimize crop contamination.

This article presents perennial grasses, without whose presence it is impossible to imagine the natural environment as well as agriculture, recreation, sport, and satisfactory aesthetics of the environment. Grasses have by far the widest distribution of all flowering families, grow on every continent, and are part of all the major biomes of the terrestrial world. They not only occur in almost all types of natural landscapes but also find a prominent place in the agricultural landscape. Grasses are not only a source of food for people (wheat, rice, maize, millet, etc.) and feed for livestock, but also a source of energy, building materials, a component of paper pulp, etc. Moreover, grasses have numerous uses to enhance the beauty of the surrounding landscape, bring relaxation, health, and comfort to people (i.e., gardens, parks, and sports facilities), and support land protection. This article describes just these, not often mentioned, and characterized grass uses, with an emphasis on the relationship between different species of perennial grasses and their functionality. The aim is to show the various aspects of the amenity use of grasses in the context of species diversity and their future under the conditions of a changing climate.

Because of public concern about exposing children to pesticides, legislation restricting its use on school playing fields has increased. One way to manage weeds without chemical herbicides is overseeding or the practice of repetitively seeding with a rapidly germinating turfgrass species. Overseeding for broadleaf weed control was tested on eight fields in Central New York (CNY) for three seasons and 40 fields across the northeastern United States for two seasons. Half of each field was treated each season by overseeding Lolium perenne L. (perennial ryegrass) three to five times each season for a total of 731 kg seed/ha (15 lb per 1000 ft2). Changes in the percent broadleaf weeds, grass, bare ground, soil moisture, Dark Green Color Index (DGCI) of grass cover, depth to soil compaction, and shear strength were measured after each treatment. The percent broadleaf weeds decreased and the percent grass cover increased due to overseeding in the Northeast fields, but not in CNY fields. Depth to compaction, percent soil moisture, and shear strength varied over time in the Northeast fields, and the percent bare ground, DGCI, and soil moisture varied over time in CNY fields. DGCI in the Northeast and soil compaction in CNY were affected by the interaction of overseeding × time. Although overseeding can be a beneficial weed management tool and affect other turf and soil traits in an integrated turf management program, monitoring environmental conditions and supporting field maintenance routines are critical weed management strategies for maintaining healthy turfgrass.

In marine environments, poaching can become a key threat to marine ecosystem conservation. Poaching can occur in marine protected areas and/or in fishery management areas. Unfortunately, understanding the magnitude and characteristics of poaching under community based and co-management governance schemes in coastal and marine environments, has not received the attention it deserves. In Chile, a system of Territorial Users Rights for Fisheries (TURF) has been recognized as one of the largest experiences of small-scale fisheries co-management at a global scale. Currently, poaching is one of the main threats to the TURF system in Chile. In this article, we assessed poaching of a highly valuable benthic resource (Concholepas concholepas) from TURF management areas. We estimated artisanal fisher association leaders’ perceptions of poaching within their TURFs and explore determinants of poaching for Concholepas concholepas. Poaching of Concholepas concholepas showed differences along the studied sites. As expected, the greater abundance of Concholepas concholepas in the management areas generates an increased incentive to poach. Areas that make the greatest investment in surveillance are those most affected by poaching. However, our study cannot determine the effectiveness of current levels of surveillance on illegal extraction. Results show older areas tend to reduce the levels of illegal extraction, which could indicate a greater capacity and experience to control poaching. Supporting fisher associations in enforcing TURFs and following up on sanctions against perpetrators are conditioning factors, highlighted by fisher leaders, for TURF sustainability. The approach used in this study provides insights to prioritize geographies and opportunities to address poaching in small-scale co-managed fisheries.

Turfgrasses are susceptible to a wide variety of ectotrophic root-infecting (ERI) fungi that cause root rot (Tredway et al., 2023). Among the root rot diseases, fairway patch, caused by Phialocephala bamuru P.T.W. Wong & C. Dong sp. nov., was recently identified and characterized in Australia infecting bermudagrass (Cynodon dactylon) and kikuyu (Pennisetum clandestinum) grass (Wong et al., 2015). Symptoms begin as small, 5-10 cm diameter patches of yellowed turf that may coalesce into larger areas of diseased grass. A characteristic sign of fairway patch is roots colonized by dark brown to black, ectotrophic mycelium. In June 2020, many tan colored, irregular-shaped patches ranging from 10-30 cm in diameter developed on a hard fescue (Festuca brevipila) cultivar 'Beacon' turfgrass field in North Brunswick, New Jersey, USA. The centers of these patches later died and became sunken or filled in partially by recovering hard fescue. The patches grew into tan irregular-shaped rings with diameters up to 3 m by Aug 2023. Symptoms were indicative of a root disease. Five 'Beacon' hard fescue soil cores at the interface of the symptomatic and non-symptomatic area were sampled in Aug 2023. Root and crown samples were observed under a dissecting microscope and dark ectotrophic hyphae were observed on both. Roots with visible ectotrophic mycelium were removed, rinsed in sterile water three times, cut into 5 mm pieces, and plated onto 10% potato dextrose agar amended with streptomycin and gentamicin at 100 mg/L (PDA+). The plates were incubated at 25°C in the dark for 5 days. The most abundant colonies being characteristic long, septate hyphae that were hyaline at the edge and dark brown to black in the center and resembled the fungus described in Wong et al., 2015. These colonies were subcultured onto PDA+ medium and selected for molecular identification. Other less abundant colonies could be identified using morphology after subcultured and had no record being pathogenic to turfgrass. To confirm the isolate's identity, its internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region was amplified in PCR using the ITS1F/ITS4 primers (Bellemain et al., 2010). The amplicon was then sequenced with both ITS1 and ITS4 primers by Sanger sequencing. Sequences were assembled (GenBank #PP000819). The consensus sequence was then BLASTn analyzed with default settings, and the result showed 99.64% sequence identity with P. bamuru (GenBank #MG195534.1). Koch's postulate was conducted in an environmentally controlled growth chamber. Six healthy 'Beacon' hard fescue plugs were sampled from the field. Three of the six plugs (treatment) were each inoculated with P. bamuru by placing 20 g of P. bamuru colonized millets beneath and around the plug before filling the pots with sand. The other three plugs (control) received the same treatment except the P. bamuru colonized millets were autoclaved. The pots were incubated in the growth chamber with a 16 h light period and 25/20°C day/night temperatures. Symptoms resembling those observed in the field appeared on the treatment pots after 21 days of incubation while the control pots remained healthy. The roots from the treatment pots were examined under the dissecting microscope to confirm the colonization of P. bamuru on the roots, and P. bamuru was reisolated and confirmed using the aforementioned morphological traits and molecular assays (GenBank #PP000820). This is the first report of a turfgrass root rot disease caused by P. bamuru in the United States. Further epidemiological, disease ecological, and pathogen biological studies are required to clarify the importance of this disease in the United States and establish proper disease containment or control measures.

Southern sting nematode (Ibipora lolii), by far the most damaging nematode pest of turfgrass in Australia, was first reported from the Newcastle area of New South Wales in 1979 and is now widely distributed in the Central Coast region of NSW; is causing severe damage to sportsgrounds in Perth, Western Australia; and has been reported from a few locations in other states. This paper reports a recent example of interstate transfer, as small rolls of turf transferred from a turf nursery in Victoria to the Brisbane Cricket Ground (the Gabba) for the Australian Football League Grand Final in October 2020 were found to be infested with I. lolii. Despite this transfer, evidence is provided to suggest that Queensland should be considered provisionally free of I. lolii. First, in the period from 2006 to 2021, 744 turfgrass samples from 160 Queensland locations were processed by two diagnostic laboratories and I. lolii was never detected. Second, I. lolii was not found at the two Queensland locations reported in 2010 as being infested. Third, an action plan designed to eliminate I. lolii from the Gabba (removal and disposal of the infested turf; fumigation of the sites where the infested turf had been laid; and application of nematicides to the fumigated areas and the whole oval) appears to have been successful, as I. lolii was not detected in a post-treatment monitoring program. The paper concludes by arguing that Queensland biosecurity authorities should list I. lolii as one of its priority pests, establish a surveillance program for the nematode, and develop strategies to minimise the risk of I. lolii being transferred into and within the state. An important characteristic for the persistence of social-ecological systems (SESs) over time is the adaptation of local institutions to the dynamic of the resources on which they depend, especially when communities face resources with high spatial and temporal variability. Previous studies on Territorial User Rights for Fisheries (TURF) in Chile (Áreas de Manejo y Explotación de Recursos Bentónicos, AMERB) showed that resources with high levels of variability, such as the highly valuable surf clam Mesodesma donacium, can have negative impacts on collective efforts among fishers to govern marine resources under AMERB, resulting in the collapse of local institutions in this boom-and-bust fishery. Here, we reflect on the only known case in Chile (Coquimbo Bay) in which local institutions, its governance mechanisms, and the surf clam M. donacium fishery have persisted over long periods of time, despite disturbances from the natural and social systems. Using participatory techniques, we draw on local fishers' in-depth knowledge of both the resource and their own historical coping mechanisms to understand the potential sources of institutional persistence among local fishers faced with a resource that has high levels of variability. We find that this unique success of a surf clam AMERB in Chile is attributed to the local conditions, such as the roots that fishers have to their village, the support by women and family, and also to the ecological settings of Coquimbo Bay and resource characteristics, that facilitate larval dispersal among the different bays, maintaining recruitment and production that sustains the AMERB. Thus, the persistence of the institution has been built over generations of coping with major disturbances to the SES, directly related to the persistence of M. donacium stocks over time, which has allowed the development of a well-structured institution with a strong fishers' organization, good leaders, a division of labor among members, shared responsibilities, and equitable income distribution. For optimum postemergence crabgrass (Digitaria spp.) control, a single quinclorac herbicide application could be properly timed and delivered with spray nozzles that produce spray droplets ranging from very coarse (401-500 μm) to medium (226-325 μm) in size to maximize target coverage and minimize the potential for drift. Crabgrass is an invasive annual grass weed of cool-season turfgrass maintain as lawns, golf courses, and sports pitches. Postemergence herbicide applications for crabgrass control in turfgrass swards often rely on repeated applications for effective control. Optimizing postemergence crabgrass applications can reduce pesticide inputs and contribute to sustainable turfgrass management practices. Two field studies evaluating crabgrass control were conducted in 2020 in a mixed stand of Kentucky bluegrass (Poa pratensis L.) with perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) in Ohio (USA) and in perennial ryegrass in Pennsylvania (USA). Both sites have histories of natural crabgrass [Digitaria sanguinalis (L.) Scop.] infestation. A postemergence herbicide, quinclorac, was applied at the product label rate and tank-mixed with methylated seed oil at the crabgrass plant stage of three-leaf to one tiller. Different spray nozzles were selected to deliver the following spray droplet classifications and sizes at 275 kPa: Delavan Raindrop 1/4, ultra coarse (>650 μm); TurfJet 1/4TTJO4, extremely coarse (501-650 μm); Air Induction AA8004 or XRTeeJet 8015, very coarse (401-500 μm); XR TeeJet 8008 or GreenLeaf TDAD04, coarse (326-400 μm); XR TeeJet 8004, medium (226-325 μm); and XRTeeJet 8003 fine (145-225 μm). Crabgrass pressure was low in Ohio, and herbicide efficacy at 60 days after treatment was considered acceptable when applied from all spray nozzles that produced spray droplet sizes ranging from ultra coarse to fine. Crabgrass pressure was severe in Pennsylvania, and herbicide efficacy at 60 DAT was considered marginally acceptable when applied from spray nozzles that produced spray droplet sizes ranging from very coarse to medium. Future research should consider cultural practices that would be complementary to postemergence herbicide applications with the goal to reduce pesticide use further and minimize any potential environmental impacts related to spray drift. Despite being recognised as a serious pest of turf grasses in Australia, there has been limited research into the southern sting nematode (Ibipora lolii). This study examined its occurrence and population dynamics in the Perth region of Western Australia and assessed the level of resistance and tolerance of turf grasses to this nematode. In a systematic survey of 90 municipal sports fields on which kikuyu was the most common turf species, I. lolii was detected in 51% of sites. The mean population density was 27 nematodes/200 mL soil, but was almost eight times higher in localised areas where symptoms were severe. Infested turf tended to be relatively sparse and have a shallow root system. In a 2-year population dynamics study on a kikuyu sports field, I. lolii reproduced year-round, but exhibited a seasonal pattern of fluctuation in population density. Numbers increased when conditions were cool and wet during the winter rainfall period, peaking in October, and then declined during the hot and dry irrigation season. Although the population density of I. lolii was always greatest in the upper 10 cm of the soil profile, nematodes were consistently recovered from depths of 50–70 cm, showing that it was capable of deep vertical movement. A field experiment comparing four cultivars of couch and two cultivars of kikuyu showed that none of the cultivars exhibited resistance or tolerance to I. lolii. Nematode numbers increased rapidly in infested plots, regardless of cultivar, while in comparison with non-infested plots, the mean total plant biomass and root dry weight were reduced by 53% and 88%, respectively. Background: Artificial turf fields are increasingly being installed with lighter weight infill systems that incorporate a pad underlayer, which is reported to reduce surface shock and decrease injuries. At this time, the effects of a pad underlayer on football trauma are unknown. Hypothesis: Athletes would not experience differences in surface-related injuries between pad and no-pad fields. Study Design: Cohort study; Level of evidence, 2. Methods: Artificial turf fields were divided into 2 groups based on a pad underlayer or no-pad system, with 58 high schools participating across 3 states over the course of 7 seasons. Outcomes of interest included injury severity, head and knee trauma, injury category, primary type of injury, injury mechanism, anatomic location of trauma, tissue type injured, and elective imaging and surgical procedures. Data underwent multivariate analyses of variance (MANOVA) using general linear model procedures and were expressed as injury incidence rates per 10-game season. Results: Of 658 varsity games, 260 games were played on fields containing pads, and 398 games were played on no-pad fields, with 795 surface-related injuries reported. MANOVA indicated significant main effects by injury severity (F 3,791 = 11.436; P <.0001), knee trauma (F 9,785 = 2.435; P =.045), injury category (F 3,791 = 3.073; P <.0001), primary type of injury (F 10,785 = 2.660; P <.0001), injury mechanism (F 13,781 = 2.053; P <.001), anatomic location (F 16,778 = 1.592; P <.001), type of tissue injured (F 4,790 = 4.485; P <.0001), and elective imaging and surgical procedures (F 4,790 = 4.248; P <.002). Post hoc analyses indicated significantly greater incidences (P <.05) of substantial and severe injury, player-to-turf trauma, patellofemoral syndrome, neck strain, lower leg strain, and elective imaging and surgical procedures when games were played on padded turf fields. No differences in concussion rate from turf impact between pad and no-pad fields were observed. Conclusion: In contrast to conventional wisdom, the addition of a pad under an artificial turf surface increases injury rates when compared with nonpadded fields across most injury categories. Purpose Treated wastewaters are reused in agriculture to deal with the water deficit, especially in arid and semi--arid regions. However, they may contain contaminants such as heavy metals that can adversely affect the soil quality and life health. This work aimed to assess the degree of contamination of the soil and the turf leaves of a golf course irrigated in the long term (10 years) by treated wastewaters. Method Analysis of eight heavy metals (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Ni, Mn, Fe and Zn) was carried out at two sites. The first was irrigated by sprinkling (site 1), the second by a drip system (site 2). Results The results showed a generalized contamination of the soil at the two sites. Fe and Mn recorded the highest levels. Cd and Cr contents were significantly higher in the soil of site 1. However, all the heavy metals recorded values below the limits set by the FAO / WHO standards for soil. Turf leaves also exhibited high values of Fe and Mn contents in the two sites. Mn content was significantly higher in the turf leaves from site 1. The results showed an accumulation of all the metals in turf leaves in which the Fe and Cd contents exceeded the FAO / WHO standards. Conclusion Long-term irrigation results in an accumulation of heavy metals in the soil and in turf leaves. Particular attention should be paid to Cd and Fe for the use of treated wastewater in agriculture. Drip irrigation system would minimize crop contamination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Permeable pavements can reduce the negative effects of flooding in urban areas. This research seeks to study and compare the performance of the impervious surface as a control (O), sandy loam (SL), gravel (G), gravel with geocell layer (GGE), rosemary (R), rosemary with geocell layer (RRE), turf (T), and turf with geocell layer (TGE) in reducing runoff volume (RV), time to start runoff (TR), runoff coefficient (C), time to end runoff (TER), peak flowrate (PF), time to peak (TP), and time base (TB) under six different rainfall intensities (i) and two different slopes (s) using a rainfall simulator. For this purpose, 96 physical models were considered at the laboratory level. For the dependent variables TR, TER, PF, TP, and TB, there was a significant difference between the data at the level of 5% in all cases. Based on the results, changes in rainfall intensity, slope, and type of treatment could make a significant difference in the results of the C parameter. All treatments were able to reduce runoff volume in all test conditions. Rosemary had a better performance in controlling runoff and parameters affecting it compared to turf. The maximum and minimum cumulative runoff volumes observed for treatment GGE are 85.4 and 2 L, respectively. Finally, the results revealed that GGE could perform better in reducing runoff and cumulative volume in all cases compared to the rest of the test groups. The highest percentage of runoff volume reduction in GGE treatment was 96.5%. • Implementation of geocell layers can be effective in flood control. • Rosemary plant can play an effective role in controlling runoff. • The percentage of runoff volume reduction in sand was higher than rosemary and grass. The sustainable management of urban landscapes, and the ecosystem services they provide, are driven in part by the health and microbial diversity of the soil. Most research on soil health has focused on agricultural lands used for food production, but creating more climate resilient cities will rely on improving our understanding of soil health in urban landscapes such as turfgrass. This study assessed the soil microbial diversity and major soil health parameters of three turfgrass landscapes with varying degrees of management intensity, an unmanaged prairie, and an agricultural site from three metropolitan areas in the Midwestern United States. Bacterial and fungal β-diversity were significantly affected by location, land use, and management age with the interaction between land use and location explaining the most variance (25 % for bacteria and 14 % for fungi). Deviations in fungal α-diversity reflected the difference in management, with unmanaged prairie locations having consistently greater fungal α-diversity than that of managed turfgrasses and agricultural sites. The relative abundance of the beneficial fungi Glomeromycetes was significantly greater in the lawn turfgrass than any other land uses; however, this was biased by a high relative abundance from a single lawn site with relatively low soil phosphorus content (2.8 mg/kg). Bacterial and fungal community composition significantly correlated with soil P, Fe, and C content, pH, organic matter, sand and clay content, and the overall soil health rating. The majority of these soil parameters significantly and positively correlated with each other along with microbial process indicators including respiration rate, active carbon, and protein content. These soil health parameters and the microbiome assembly constitute the potential driving factors for many crucial microbial processes that drive ecosystem services and can be used to create more sustainable urban landscapes. • Location, land use, and age of management affects urban soil microbiome β-diversity. • Unmanaged prairie soil had greater fungal α-diversity than managed urban soil. • Microbial composition significantly correlated with multiple soil health parameters.
