Diversity. Tupiperla has 25 species described, including the five described in this paper (Table 1). Diagnosis. Tupiperla is diagnosed by: adults with a disto-ventral spine on each femur (Froehlich, 1969); forewing pattern with most crossveins with broad, squarish, and darker borders, forewing pterostigmatic crossveins absent; in males, the lack of a sclerotized epiproct, and a relatively long extension of tergum 10 (T10) that ends in two separate teeth (Bispo & Froehlich, 2007). Tupiperla pinhoi sp. nov. (Figs. 2 A���B, Figs. 3 A���C) Material Examined. Holotype. Male. Brazil: Santa Catarina: Urubici, Cachoeira do Avencal, 1229 m a.s.l., S28��02.798, W49��37.070, 08.i.2010, net, HF Mendes, LC Pinho & RA Moretto col. (MZSP). Measurement. Holotype, male: head width, 1.0 mm; pronotum width, 0.83 mm; pronotum length, 0.64 mm; forewing length, 7.9 mm; hind wing length, 6.7 mm; antenna length, 8.1 mm; 15 cercomeres. Description. Tupiperla pinhoi sp. nov. is a medium sized species. General color brownish to ochraceous. Head brownish with a lighter area in front of the coronal fork, and laterally to the eyes (Fig. 2A); ocelli and eyes black; anterior part of frons brown; labrum light brown, darker than clypeus; lateral part of the head, behind the eyes, with a dark brown band. Maxillary and labial palpi ochraceous. Antenna light brown. Pronotum squarish, light brown, narrower than the head and with some little setae covering it (Fig. 2A). Legs light brown, covered with thin bristles; femur with disto-ventral spine; tibia with two distal spurs; tarsi with tarsomere 1 medium, tarsomere 2 short, and tarsomere 3 long. Wings membranous, light brown; forewing with a conspicuous darker pattern bordering veins and crossveins; pterostigmatic crossvein absent, RA unforked, RP forked and CuA long-forked; hind wing with M3+4, near its separation from M1+2, fused with CuA in part of its length, CuA short forked, 6th anal vein fused with hind margin of wing (Fig. 2B). Male. Abdomen brownish to ochraceous with slightly lighter band on abdominal terga 1���9. T10 light brown to ochraceous. T10 extension, in dorsal view, large, distally darker, ending in two separated and out curved teeth (Fig. 3A); in lateral view, straight dorsally and with a clear latero-ventral band (Fig. 3C). Paraprocts, in ventral view, thin, medially curved with thin bristles internally and conspicuous minute teeth on dorsal (outer) margin (Fig. 3B); in lateral view, with constant width over most of its length, dorsal margin darker and medially covered with minute teeth, distal region with an accentuated hook-shaped curvature (Fig. 3C). Subgenital plate ochraceous, ovoid-shaped and with apex prolonged between the paraprocts (Fig. 3B). Epiproct absent. Female and nymph. Unknown. Remarks. Tupiperla pinhoi can be distinguished from the congeners by the shape of the paraprocts and the T10 extension in males. The median dorsal margin of the paraprocts in T. pinhoi are covered by minute teeth, and the distal region has a distinct hook-shaped curvature. Only T. illiesi, T. reichardti Froehlich, 1998, and T. serrulata sp. nov. have minute teeth on the dorsal margin of the paraprocts. However, in T. illiesi each paraproct has a small and thin latero-distal spine, whereas in T. reichardti, each paraproct has a large latero-medial spine and in T. serrulata sp. nov., the paraprocts lack a lateral spine. Tupiperla pinhoi was collected in 2010 at the Avencal Waterfall, at 1229 m a.s.l. in the municipality of Urubici, Santa Catarina, Brazil. The waterfall is 100 m high and it formed by the Funil River. The common vegetation in the area is the ���avenca��� (Pteridaceae: Adiantum sp.). Etymology. Tupiperla pessacqi sp. nov. is a small sized species. General color brown. Head brown with lighter area in front of the coronal fork, and laterally to the eyes (Fig. 2E); ocelli and eyes black; anterior part of frons darker; labrum brown, darker than clypeus; lateral part of the head, behind the eyes, with a dark brown band. Maxillary palpus brown; labial palpus light brown. Antenna brown. Pronotum brown, square with rounded corners, and narrower than the head (Fig. 2E). Legs dark brown, covered with thin bristles; femur lighter proximally and darker distally and with disto-ventral spine present; tibia and tarsi dark brown; tibia with two spurs distally; tarsi with tarsomere 1 medium, tarsomere 2 short, and tarsomere 3 long. Wings membranous, brown; forewing with a weak darker pattern bordering veins and crossveins, pterostigmatic crossvein absent, RA unforked, RP forked and CuA long forked; hind wing with M3+4, near its separation from M1+2, fused with CuA in part of its length, CuA short forked, 6th anal vein fused with hind margin of wing (Fig. 2F). Cercomeres covered by conspicuous small bristles. Male. Abdomen brown, with a conspicuous inverted trapezium-shaped clear band on abdominal terga 1–9. T10 dark brown. T10 extension, in dorsal view, elongated and thin, ending in two teeth, which are close to each other (Fig. 5A); in lateral view, straight dorsally, ending in two downcurved teeth (Fig. 5C). Paraprocts, in ventral view, thin, and with apex twisted (Fig. 5B); in lateral view, with middle region broad, apex truncated and up curved (Fig. 5C). Subgenital plate brownish with apex triangular, and prolonged between the paraprocts (Fig. 5B). Epiproct absent. Female. Abdominal segments 1–7 lighter; St 7 with two conspicuous sclerites. St8 forms a sclerotized subgenital plate, rectangle-shaped and with rounded corners; proximal margin of the plate where it meets St7 strongly sclerotized; apex of the plate reaching St9, but not surpassing it (Figs. 5 D–E). Paraprocts short, and with apex slightly truncated (Figs. 5 D–E). Several thin bristles covering the St8–10 and paraprocts. Nymphs. Unknown. Remarks. Tupiperla pessacqi can be distinguished from the congeners by the shape of paraprocts in males and by the subgenital plate of female. The paraprocts of T. pessacqi resembles those of T. illiesi, however, in the latter species, each paraproct has a subapical lateral spine, whereas in T. pessacqi the distal region is twisted. In addition, the paraprocts of T. illiesi are covered by minute teeth on the dorsal margin, absent in T. pessacqi. The subgenital plate of female of the both species are distinctive. In T. pessacqi the subgenital plate is square-shaped, whereas in T. illiesi, the plate is truncate to oblong with small posterolateral extensions. Tupiperla pessacqi is described based on male and female specimens collected in the municipalities of Urubici and Grão Pará, Santa Catarina State, Brazil. Most of the material comes from Avencal (including the holotype) and Véu de Noiva waterfalls in the São Joaquim National Park in Urubici. Additional material was collected in Serra River in Urubici, and Braço Esquerdo and Três Barras rivers in Grão Pará. Etymology. The specific name pessacqi honors Prof. Dr. Pablo Pessacq, Argentina, for his contribution on taxonomy of aquatic entomology, especially related to Odonata and Plecoptera.

Legs dark brown; femur lighter proximally and darker distally, covered with thin bristles, and with disto-ventral spine present; tibia and tarsi darker, and covered with thin bristles. Wings membranous, brownish; forewing with darker patterns bordering veins and crossveins conspicuous, pterostigmatic crossveins absent, RA unforked, RP forked and CuA long forked; hind wing with M3+4, near its separation from M1+2, fused with CuA in part of its length, CuA long forked, 6th anal vein fused with hind margin of wing (Fig. 2H). Male. Abdomen brown, with a conspicuous inverted trapezium-shaped clear band on abdominal terga 1–9. T10 dark brown. T10 extension almost black; in dorsal view, fish tail shaped (Fig. 6A); in lateral view, ending in two large downcurved teeth (Fig. 6C). Paraprocts, in ventral view, thin, apex spoon-shaped, and with several external median bristles (Fig. 6B); in lateral view, narrow at the base, expanding toward a truncated apex, which has a subapical dorsal tooth (Fig. 6C). Subgenital plate brownish with central area darker, triangular shaped and with apex prolonged between the paraprocts (Fig. 6B). Epiproct absent. Female. Abdominal segments 1–7 milky; St7 with two-minute sclerites. Several thin bristles covering St8–10 and paraprocts. St8 forms a long sclerotized subgenital plate that reaches St10, but do not surpass it; plate with a conspicuous lateral narrowing near the base, gradually widening from the base to the apex (Figs. 6 D–E). Paraprocts, in lateral view, elongated, apex pointed (Fig. 6E). Nymphs. unknown. Remarks. Males of Tupiperla ubuntu has a T10 extension that resembles that of T. oliveirai. However, the paraprocts in T. ubuntu are thin and expand gradually towards a truncated apex, ending postero-dorsally in a small pointed tooth. In T. oliveirai, the paraprocts are strongly dilated, bent upward in last third, with a membranous area apically and a subapical dorsal tooth. Tupiperla ubuntu is described based on male and female specimens collected in the village of Minador River in the municipality of Orleans, Santa Catarina State, Brazil. Most material was collected using Malaise traps from August to December 2013. The number of females collected was 15 times greater than the number of males. Etymology. The specific name ubuntu is in allusion to the ancient African word (Nguni word) which brings the notion of solidarity, cooperation, respect, and generosity. The name is a noun in apposition.

Wings membranous, brown; forewing with a weak darker pattern bordering veins and crossveins, pterostigmatic crossvein absent, RA unforked, RP forked and CuA long forked; hind wing with M3+4, near its separation from M1+2, fused with CuA in part of its length, CuA short forked, 6th anal vein fused with hind margin of wing (Fig. 2F). Cercomeres covered by conspicuous small bristles. Male. Abdomen brown, with a conspicuous inverted trapezium-shaped clear band on abdominal terga 1���9. T10 dark brown. T10 extension, in dorsal view, elongated and thin, ending in two teeth, which are close to each other (Fig. 5A); in lateral view, straight dorsally, ending in two downcurved teeth (Fig. 5C). Paraprocts, in ventral view, thin, and with apex twisted (Fig. 5B); in lateral view, with middle region broad, apex truncated and up curved (Fig. 5C). Subgenital plate brownish with apex triangular, and prolonged between the paraprocts (Fig. 5B). Epiproct absent. Female. Abdominal segments 1���7 lighter; St 7 with two conspicuous sclerites. St8 forms a sclerotized subgenital plate, rectangle-shaped and with rounded corners; proximal margin of the plate where it meets St7 strongly sclerotized; apex of the plate reaching St9, but not surpassing it (Figs. 5 D���E). Paraprocts short, and with apex slightly truncated (Figs. 5 D���E). Several thin bristles covering the St8���10 and paraprocts. Nymphs. Unknown. Remarks. Tupiperla pessacqi can be distinguished from the congeners by the shape of paraprocts in males and by the subgenital plate of female. The paraprocts of T. pessacqi resembles those of T. illiesi, however, in the latter species, each paraproct has a subapical lateral spine, whereas in T. pessacqi the distal region is twisted. In addition, the paraprocts of T. illiesi are covered by minute teeth on the dorsal margin, absent in T. pessacqi. The subgenital plate of female of the both species are distinctive. In T. pessacqi the subgenital plate is square-shaped, whereas in T. illiesi, the plate is truncate to oblong with small posterolateral extensions. Tupiperla pessacqi is described based on male and female specimens collected in the municipalities of Urubici and Gr��o Par��, Santa Catarina State, Brazil. Most of the material comes from Avencal (including the holotype) and V��u de Noiva waterfalls in the S��o Joaquim National Park in Urubici. Additional material was collected in Serra River in Urubici, and Bra��o Esquerdo and Tr��s Barras rivers in Gr��o Par��. Etymology. Wings membranous, brownish; forewing with darker patterns bordering veins and crossveins conspicuous, pterostigmatic crossveins absent, RA unforked, RP forked and CuA long forked; hind wing with M3+4, near its separation from M1+2, fused with CuA in part of its length, CuA long forked, 6th anal vein fused with hind margin of wing (Fig. 2H). Male. Abdomen brown, with a conspicuous inverted trapezium-shaped clear band on abdominal terga 1���9. T10 dark brown. T10 extension almost black; in dorsal view, fish tail shaped (Fig. 6A); in lateral view, ending in two large downcurved teeth (Fig. 6C). Paraprocts, in ventral view, thin, apex spoon-shaped, and with several external median bristles (Fig. 6B); in lateral view, narrow at the base, expanding toward a truncated apex, which has a subapical dorsal tooth (Fig. 6C). Subgenital plate brownish with central area darker, triangular shaped and with apex prolonged between the paraprocts (Fig. 6B). Epiproct absent. Female. Abdominal segments 1���7 milky; St7 with two-minute sclerites. Several thin bristles covering St8���10 and paraprocts. St8 forms a long sclerotized subgenital plate that reaches St10, but do not surpass it; plate with a conspicuous lateral narrowing near the base, gradually widening from the base to the apex (Figs. 6 D���E). Paraprocts, in lateral view, elongated, apex pointed (Fig. 6E). Nymphs. unknown. Remarks. Males of Tupiperla ubuntu has a T10 extension that resembles that of T. oliveirai. However, the paraprocts in T. ubuntu are thin and expand gradually towards a truncated apex, ending postero-dorsally in a small pointed tooth. In T. oliveirai, the paraprocts are strongly dilated, bent upward in last third, with a membranous area apically and a subapical dorsal tooth. Tupiperla ubuntu is described based on male and female specimens collected in the village of Minador River in the municipality of Orleans, Santa Catarina State, Brazil. Most material was collected using Malaise traps from August to December 2013. The number of females collected was 15 times greater than the number of males. Etymology. The specific name ubuntu is in allusion to the ancient African word (Nguni word) which brings the notion of solidarity, cooperation, respect, and generosity. Diversity. Tupiperla has 25 species described, including the five described in this paper (Table 1). Diagnosis. Tupiperla is diagnosed by: adults with a disto-ventral spine on each femur (Froehlich, 1969); forewing pattern with most crossveins with broad, squarish, and darker borders, forewing pterostigmatic crossveins absent; in males, the lack of a sclerotized epiproct, and a relatively long extension of tergum 10 (T10) that ends in two separate teeth (Bispo & Froehlich, 2007). The nymphs are slender; the femur, as in adults, is provided with a disto-ventral spine; the femur and tibia lack a dorsal row of long hairs (Froehlich, 1969).

Tupiperla pinhoi sp. nov. is a medium sized species. General color brownish to ochraceous. T10 extension, in dorsal view, large, distally darker, ending in two separated and out curved teeth (Fig. 3A); in lateral view, straight dorsally and with a clear latero-ventral band (Fig. 3C). Paraprocts, in ventral view, thin, medially curved with thin bristles internally and conspicuous minute teeth on dorsal (outer) margin (Fig. 3B); in lateral view, with constant width over most of its length, dorsal margin darker and medially covered with minute teeth, distal region with an accentuated hook-shaped curvature (Fig. 3C). Subgenital plate ochraceous, ovoid-shaped and with apex prolonged between the paraprocts (Fig. 3B). Epiproct absent. Female and nymph. Unknown. Remarks. Tupiperla pinhoi can be distinguished from the congeners by the shape of the paraprocts and the T10 extension in males. The median dorsal margin of the paraprocts in T. pinhoi are covered by minute teeth, and the distal region has a distinct hook-shaped curvature. Only T. illiesi, T. reichardti Froehlich, 1998, and T. serrulata sp. nov. have minute teeth on the dorsal margin of the paraprocts. However, in T. illiesi each paraproct has a small and thin latero-distal spine, whereas in T. reichardti, each paraproct has a large latero-medial spine and in T. serrulata sp. nov., the paraprocts lack a lateral spine. Tupiperla pinhoi was collected in 2010 at the Avencal Waterfall, at 1229 m a.s.l. in the municipality of Urubici, Santa Catarina, Brazil. The waterfall is 100 m high and it formed by the Funil River. The common vegetation in the area is the “avenca” (Pteridaceae: Adiantum sp.). Etymology. The specific name pinhoi honors Prof. Dr. Luiz Carlos de Pinho for his contribution to aquatic entomology, especially related to Brazilian chironomids.

Adult habitus. General colour light ochraceous to light brown, males slightly darker. Pronotum lighter than head. Pleural area of thorax brownish. Tarsi and tibiae darker in some specimens. Wings similar in colour as body, darker patterns bordering veins and crossveins often subdued, more apparent in darker specimens. Male (Figs. 1���4). Apically, subgenital plate triangular (Figs. 2, 4). T 10 extension divided into two large arms, each ending in a curved apex (Fig. 1). Ascending arms of paraprocts not broad, but towards apex a lateral extension ends in a curved point (Figs. 1���3). Medial portions ascend to level of median part of T 10 extension and also terminate in a small point (Fig. 4). Female (Fig. 5). Subgenital plate medium in length, base broadest, narrowing toward apex, but subapically broadening slightly, apically with a wide notch. Remarks. Tupiperla amorimi is distinguished in the male by the large, forked T 10 extension and by the complex paraprocts. The paraprocts have an acute lateral extension and a medial dorsal section that terminates at the base of the T 10 fork. Other species with large T 10 forks are T. oliveirai Froehlich 1998 and T. froehlichi Bispo & Lecci, 2011. In T. oliveirai the arms of the fork form a smaller angle and the paraprocts are much thicker and simple. In T. froehlichi the fork is smaller and the paraprocts are simple and thin. Etymology. General color dark brown. Head dark brown with lighter triangular area in front of the coronal bifurcation and lighter spots laterally to the paired ocelli; in some specimens, anterior part of frons lighter; clypeus and labrum light brown; three ocelli and compound eyes black; in lighter individuals, lateral part of the head, behind compound eyes, with a distinct dark brown band; maxillary palpi 5 -segmented, brown, with the last segment darker; labial palpi brown and 3 -segmented; antennae brown. Thorax dark brown; pronotum with rugosities and narrower than the head; legs brown, tibia and tarsi darker; in prothoracic legs, ventral femoral spine small (most females) or absent (most males), in meso- and metathoracic legs, femoral spine present; forewing light brown with many crossveins, pterostigmatic cell without crossvein. Male. Abdominal terga of the segments I–III mainly white, remaining segments mainly brown; tergum X with triangular white patch in the base and with small extension (figure 1); abdominal sterna brown with white patches, which vary in size with the segment; subgenital plate dark brown (Fig. 3); paraprocts dark brown, in lateral view, they expanded progressively towards the apex, which is rounded with a small pointed tooth on posterodorsal portion (Fig. 2). Female. Abdominal segments I–VII membranous; sternum VII with two strong spots; subgenital plate sclerotized and robust, surpassing segment IX apex and reaching segment X (Figs. 4–5); segments IX and X sclerotized and dark brown. Remarks. Tupiperla guariru has a tergum X extension similar to that of T. modesta; however, the paraprocts of both species are different. In T. guariru, the paraprocts expand progressively towards a rounded apex, with a small pointed tooth on the posterodorsal portion, whereas in T. modesta, the paraprocts are similar width throughout their length, ending in a rounded apex. Additionally, males of T. guariru have a rounded posterior subgenital plate margin, but in T. modesta this structure is pointed. Females of T. guariru lack lateral extensions of the subgenital plate, which are present in T. modesta. Etymology. “Serra do Guariru ”, an indigenous name for the mountain range “Serra da Jibóia”, Bahia State, the region where the specimens were collected. The word “ Guariru ” means water reservoir in the Tupi language. The name is used as a noun in apposition.

Abdominal terga of the segments I���III mainly white, remaining segments mainly brown; tergum X with triangular white patch in the base and with small extension (figure 1); abdominal sterna brown with white patches, which vary in size with the segment; subgenital plate dark brown (Fig. 3); paraprocts dark brown, in lateral view, they expanded progressively towards the apex, which is rounded with a small pointed tooth on posterodorsal portion (Fig. 2). Abdominal segments I���VII membranous; sternum VII with two strong spots; subgenital plate sclerotized and robust, surpassing segment IX apex and reaching segment X (Figs. 4���5); segments IX and X sclerotized and dark brown. Remarks. Tupiperla guariru has a tergum X extension similar to that of T. modesta; however, the paraprocts of both species are different. In T. guariru, the paraprocts expand progressively towards a rounded apex, with a small pointed tooth on the posterodorsal portion, whereas in T. modesta, the paraprocts are similar width throughout their length, ending in a rounded apex. Additionally, males of T. guariru have a rounded posterior subgenital plate margin, but in T. modesta this structure is pointed. Females of T. guariru lack lateral extensions of the subgenital plate, which are present in T. modesta. In lateral view, tergum X extension has a pointed process directed ventrally. Paraprocts slightly narrowed at the base and slightly expanded medially; dorsal concavity slightly sharp of the medium to distal portion and apex relatively truncated. In ventral view, paraprocts are directed to tergum X extension; distal region with strong lateral curvature, apex truncated. Subgenital plate light brown covered with small and thin bristles; subgenital plate rhombus shaped; apex pointed and prolonged between paraprocts; extends to half tergum X. Female and Nymph. Unknown. Remarks. Tupiperla bispoi exhibits size variation of the ventral femoral spine of the prothoracic legs, and meso- and metathoracic legs. However, this spine is always present in all thoracic legs. The short and simple extension of the tergum X resembles that of T. amandae Bispo & Lecci, 2011, but the latter has paraprocts without a concavity medially to the distal portion (in lateral view), and a “subgenital plate brownish, oval and more sclerotized in its central part” (Bispo & Lecci 2011). The rhombus shape of subgenital plate of T. bispoi is similar to T. tessellata, but differs from the new species by the thickness of paraprocts (thin in T. tessellata), and sternum X (slender in T. tessellata). Etymology. The specific epithet, bispoi honors Dr. Pitágoras da Conceição Bispo for his contributions to the knowledge of aquatic insects, especially stoneflies.

RJ. 3 width of head: 0.93���1.17 mm; length of forewing: 8.33���9.31 mm (n= 4). Male. General color brown to dark brown. Head dark brown with depressed area between the posterior ocelli (Fig. 2). Eyes dark brown. Three ocelli. Antenna dark brown. Labrum and palpus brown. Pronotum trapezoidal, dark brown, with roughness; median line dark. Foreleg brown; middle and posterior femora brown, with darker apex. Spine of femur keel shaped. Base of middle and posterior tibiae brown, delimited by a dark ring. Abdomen dark brown, pale in dorsal view and brown in ventral view; sterna covered by white setae. Tergum IX without pigment posteromedially lateral and anterior margins sclerotized dark brown. Tergum X pentagonal; anterior and latero-posterior margins concave; posterior margin convex. Extension of tergum X short, flattened dorsoventrally, broader at apex and slightly curved ventrad (Fig. 3). Paraprocts long and robust, longer than tergum X, somewhat cylindrical, dilated and twisted dorsally on distal quarter, tapering to acute apex (Fig. 4). Subgenital plate piriform, posterior margin projected with truncated apex (Fig. 5). Female and Nymph: unknown. Remarks. Tupiperla barbosai differs from other species of the genus by the peculiar form of the paraprocts, longer and tapering to an acute apex. The structure is similar to T. oliverai Froehlich, 1998, but in this species, the apex of paraproct is more truncated than in the new species. The apex of tergum X differs between the two species, being short in T. barbosai and long and deeply divided in T. oliverai. All specimens of T. barbosai were collected with a Malaise trap and aerial nets during day, suggesting diurnal activity of this species. Distribution. Brazil. Rio de Janeiro. Etymology. In Tupiperla Froehlich, 1969, the presence or the absence of the s cross-vein in the forewings are useless both as a generic and as a specific character. The relative antenna length and the number of cercomeres may be useful in discriminating between species.

Tupiperla illiesi fly along the year in the coastal mountains of southeastern Brazil, with larger numbers during the warmer rainy season. In the seasonal tropical climate of Central Brazil and Serra do Cipó, MG, T. oliveirai and T. gracilis, respectively, fly along the year but the pattern is still not known. In the higher elevation (ca. 1600 m a.s.l.) of Campos do Jordão, SP, species of Tupiperla may not fly during the colder months. Seasonal size variation, a phenomenon still little understood, occurred both in tropical and subtropical climates of the states of Goiás and São Paulo.
