Reablement has been the subject of increasing scientific activity in recent years. Currently, no review has provided a broad overview of the extent and breadth of international publications in reablement.Objective: The objectives were 1) to map the volume of reablement publications, how the publications had increased over time, and their geographical distribution, 2) to identify the publication types and designs, 3) to identify publication trends, and 4) to identify knowledge gaps in the current peer-reviewed literature.Methods: The scoping review approach designed by Arksey and O’Malley was used to identify peer-reviewed articles on reablement. Information was obtained on scientific activity on reablement over a period of more than two decades from five electronic databases and without language restrictions. Data was extracted from the eligible articles and both descriptive analysis and thematic analysis of the data was performed.Results: A total of 198 articles published from 1999 to August 2022 from 14 countries were identified. There is a continuous interest in the field from countries where reablement has been implemented. An international and historical overview among countries with peer-reviewed publications on reablement is presented, which also partly reflects the countries that have implemented reablement. Most of the research derives from Western countries, in particular from Norway. Varied approaches to publications in reablement were noted with the majority being empirical and quantitative in nature.Conclusion: The scoping review confirms the continued expansion of the breadth of reablement-focused publications in terms of originating countries, target populations, and research designs. In addition, the scoping review contributes to the knowledge base regarding reablement’s research front.Keywords: research methods, restorative care, rehabilitation, multidisciplinary

It is a general belief that the rapidly ageing population of the world is a serious concern to the global drive toward healthy ageing. The situation becomes more critical as there is a reduction in the available healthcare workforce due to the shrinkage and ageing of these personnel’s. In a drive towards addressing this issue, a model of care ‘reablement’, which is encompassing of both health and social care for older adults is being advocated for. Reablement is being considered as an innovative approach particularly targeted towards improving the functional abilities of older adults. Evidence that is documented about reablement is few, particularly among specific target groups in terms of diagnosis. Hence, these are main knowledge gaps that need addressing as databases searched produce no result of scoping review or systematic review on evidence of reablement for specific target groups in terms of diagnosis. The main aim for conducting this scoping review is to map literature on evidence of reablement for specific target groups in terms of diagnosis. It is anticipated that the result of this study will inform experts in the field and policymakers in geriatric healthcare about groups that can benefit more from this approach. The research questions for this study are; (1) Which specific groups can be identified based on diagnosis? (2) What is the evidence about the effectiveness and experiences of participating in reablement for this target groups? (3) What is the knowledge gap regarding the target groups?

Objective: The objective of this review is to map the literature on reablement and identify the research trends by systematically mapping focus areas, identifying the types of studies, and highlighting knowledge gaps in the current peer-reviewed literature available. Introduction: Reablement is a context-specific service that can help support an individual’s goals that relate to one’s independence in everyday activities that one holds of value. It is a holistic and interprofessional intervention geared towards supporting an individual in their place of residence and community. As more and more healthcare systems and professionals look towards reablement to provide holistic support, recent research on reablement has also increased. The extent and change of publications available on reablement need to be examined leading to identification of gaps in the current available knowledge base of reablement which can guide future research. Inclusion criteria: The scoping review will select peer-reviewed research on reablement as these would offer information pertaining to the literature on reablement. No limits on population or context will be used in order to obtain the full breadth of existing peer-reviewed literature on the topic. To ensure focus on reablement, only those articles that include “reablement” or “restorative care” in the title, abstract, and keywords will be selected. Conference abstracts, posters, books, evaluation reports and commentaries will be excluded as these may not have gone through the peer-review process. Methods: A detailed search strategy will be used to identify all available peer-reviewed literature on reablement. No limits will be placed on the year of publication or language. Data extracted will focus on the study design, geographical distribution, and subject of interest. Background: Reablement is an alternative approach to home-based services for older adults at risk of functional decline. It is time-limited and aims to promote independence by offering a multidisciplinary, individualised and goal-directed intervention. The Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) is an instrument designed to help participants identify, prioritise and evaluate occupational performance (COPM-P) and satisfaction with performance (COPM-S) of important occupations. The COPM is the main instrument for goal determination and evaluation in Norwegian reablement. Objectives: To investigate psychometric properties of the COPM used on an interprofessional basis, to explore potential factors predicting outcomes following reablement, and to evaluate the effectiveness of reablement in home-dwelling older adults. Methods: The PhD project is based on two cohort studies (the psychometric study and the prediction study) and one randomised controlled trial (the effectiveness study). Results: The results show that the COPM has adequate content validity, construct validity and feasibility in a population of home-dwelling older adults, and a moderate responsiveness to change. The minimal important changes are 3.0 and 3.2 points for COPM-P and COPM-S, respectively. High baseline scores of COPM-P and COPM-S, female gender, having fracture as the major health condition and high motivation for rehabilitation predict better outcomes. Home-dwelling older adults benefit from reablement by improving their self-perceived performance and satisfaction with performance in prioritised daily occupations. Conclusion: This PhD project demonstrates that the psychometric properties of the COPM are adequate in an older, heterogeneous and home-dwelling population. The results support the use of COPM in clinical practice and research in this population. Furthermore, the results show that diagnosis, gender, motivation and functional level are significant predictors of outcomes of reablement. Lastly, this thesis confirms that reablement is an effective intervention when it comes to improving performance and satisfaction in everyday life.
