9. Construction of a Composite Sn‐DLC Artificial Protective Layer with Hierarchical Interfacial Coupling Based on Gradient Coating Technology Toward Robust Anodes for Zn Metal Batteries.

Abstract

Developing a robust zinc (Zn) anode, free from Zn dendrites and unwanted side reactions, relies on designing a durable and efficient interfacial protection layer. In this study, gradient coating technology is employed to construct a hierarchically structured composite of Sn with diamond‐like carbon (DLC/Sn‐DLC) as an artificial protective layer. The DLC framework endows DLC/Sn‐DLC layer with high stability and adaptability, achieving long‐term stability of the anode–electrolyte interface. The gradual‐composite Sn, with its Sn─O─C interface chemical bonds, facilitates rapid charge transfer and offers ample zincophilic sites at the base, promoting uniform Zn2+ reduction reaction and deposition. Additionally, the DLC/Sn‐DLC composite exhibits a "lotus effect" and favorable hydrophobic properties, preventing water‐reduced side reactions. Leveraging this structural design and the synergistic cooperation of DLC and Sn, the DLC/Sn‐DLC@Zn electrode demonstrates remarkable Zn plating/stripping reversibility, eliminating Zn dendrites and side reactions. Notably, under a high current density of 10 mA cm−2, the DLC/Sn‐DLC@Zn anode‐based symmetrical cell exhibits stable operation for over 1550 h, with a low nucleation overpotential of 101 mV. The DLC/Sn‐DLC@Zn||Mn3O4‐CNTs full battery delivers a high capacity of 109.8 mAh cm−2 after 5800 cycles at 2 A g−1, and the pouch cell shows potential for energy storage applications. Abstract

The surface oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is severely restricted owing to the sluggish OER kinetics and limited number of reactive sites. Although surface reconstruction can introduce defects to improve the OER performance, they often function as recombination centers and cause severe carrier recombination. With the aid of ultrasonication, the CdIn2S4 photoanode surface is reconstructed using Zn‐modified Cd defects without extreme chemical reaction environment. Owing to the surface reconstruction, the formed type‐II band structure is beneficial for separating photogenerated carriers and reduced the bulk recombination. Additionally, the Zn‐modified Cd defects are introduced in situ during the ultrasound cavitation process, which facilitated the carrier transfer, reduced the surface recombination, and increased the number of surface active sites. First‐principles calculations indicate that the modified Cd defects effectively lower the electrochemical reaction barrier and promote the surface OER kinetics by precisely regulating the four‐electron reaction. Consequently, the optimized photoanode exhibits a enhanced photocurrent of 5.30 mA cm−2 at 1.23 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode. These results demonstrate that an accurate surface reconstruction design can be achieved for introducing and modifying metal defects to improve the transfer and transport behaviors of photogenerated carriers. Abstract

An rGO−like carbon compound has been synthesized from biomass, i.e., old coconut shell, by a carbonization process followed by heating at 400°C for 5 h. The nitrogen doping was achieved by adding the urea (CH4N2O) and stirring at 70°C for 14 h. The morphology and structure of the rGO-like carbon were investigated by electron microscopies and Raman spectroscopy. The presence of C-N functional groups was analyzed by Fourier transform infrared and synchrotron X-ray photoemission spectroscopy, while the particle and the specific capacitance were measured by particle sizer and cyclic voltammetry. The highest specific capacitance of 72.78 F/g is achieved by the sample with 20% urea, having the smallest particles size and the largest surface area. The corresponding sample has shown to be constituted by the appropriate amount of C–N pyrrolic and pyridinic defects.

37. Probing the Magnetic Properties of Boron-Doped Graphenic-Based Carbon Materials

Abstract

Graphenic carbon (GC) has been successfully synthesized from biomass (coconut shell charcoal) using the liquid phase exfoliation method. The dopants, in the form of light atoms such as boron (B-GC), were introduced with the aim of improving their magnetic properties. X-ray diffraction was used to identify the GC and B-GC, and the results show broad peaks around 24° and 43°, indicating the presence of graphene-like carbon structure. The bonding structure was also analyzed using X-ray photoelectron (XPS). It reveals the main bonds in GC consist of sp2, sp3, and C=O. While the B-GC sample shows an additional bond, namely the B-C bond, as an indicator of the successful doping process of B into the GC structure. Both GC and B-GC show weak room temperature ferromagnetism. Furthermore, these findings show that introducing boron atoms into the graphenic structure can improve magnetization.
