Key factors such as stage of lactation, parity, and body fat reserves have been associated with the digital cushion thickness (DCT), however, there are discrepancies between the results of previously published studies. The objective of this study was to examine the association of stage of lactation, body fat reserves, parity, and lesion incidence with DCT in a large cohort of intensively monitored cows. Across 4 UK farms, 2,352 cows were prospectively enrolled and assessed at 4 time points: before calving (T1-Precalving), immediately after calving (T2-Calving), in early lactation (T3-Early), and in late lactation (T4-Late). At each time point, BCS was recorded, the presence of sole lesions (sole ulcers and sole hemorrhage) and white line lesions was assessed by veterinarians, and an ultrasound image was taken to retrospectively measure the backfat thickness (BFT) in the pelvic region and the digital cushion on the hind left lateral claw. Mixed effects multivariable linear regression models, with the cow as a random effect, were fit to examine the association between the explanatory variables and DCT. The explanatory variables tested were farm, parity, stage of lactation, BCS, BFT, height, the presence of a lesion at the time of measurement, the chronicity of a lesion during early lactation, the predicted maximum daily milk yield, and the rate of milk production rise in early lactation. Stage of lactation and farm were both associated with DCT; however, an interaction was present, and this DCT pattern of change was farm-dependent. Two distinct patterns emerged; one indicated the nadir to occur shortly after calving, the other indicated the nadir to occur during early lactation. Neither BFT nor BCS were significantly associated with DCT. Heifers displayed thinner digital cushions compared with multiparous cows; however, this effect was dependent on the stage of lactation, with heifers having a thinner digital cushion up until late lactation, by which time DCT was commensurate with multiparous animals. Sole lesions and white line lesions at the time of measurement were associated with DCT (sole lesion: estimate = -0.07 mm, 95% CI = -0.14-0.00; white line lesion: estimate = 0.28 mm, 95% CI = 0.15-0.42)., (The Authors. Excessive periparturient fat mobilisation and its association with dairy cattle health and fertility is well documented; however, the role of muscle mobilisation has not been studied extensively. The objectives of this study were to (i) investigate the changes in the thickness of the longissimus dorsi muscle in high producing dairy cows during the periparturient period, (ii) identify factors associated with these changes, and (iii) describe their possible associations with cattle reproductive performance. Data were collected from a total of 500 lactations from 455 cows on three different UK farms. Muscle thickness (MT) ( Longissimus dorsi ) and back fat thickness (BFT) measurements were collected at three different time-points during the periparturient period using ultrasonography. Body condition score (BCS) was also assessed at the same time-points and blood samples were collected for the measurement of non-esterified fatty acids. Farm fertility records were used and genomically estimated breeding values were also available. Associations between variables were analysed with the use of multivariable linear and logistic regression models; Cox proportional hazard analysis was used for fertility outcomes. Muscle thickness decreased pre- to post-calving on all three farms, though they were notable between farm differences. Those animals with a lower BCS pre-calving had a higher MT loss; significant fat mobilisation occurred between the calving and early lactation period. Muscle thickness changes and fat mobilisation were not associated in this study. An increased time to first service was described for those animals that mobilised more muscle tissue. Our study advances the understanding of periparturient muscle tissue mobilisation in dairy cattle and highlights its potential associations with cattle fertility.

The experiment reported in this research paper aimed to determine whether clinical and subclinical effects on cattle were similar if provided with isoenergetic and isonitrogenous challenge diets in which carbohydrate sources were predominantly starch or sugar. The study was a 3 × 3 Latin square using six adult Jersey cows with rumen cannulae, over 9 weeks. In the first 2 weeks of each 3 week experimental period cows were fed with a maintenance diet and, in the last week, each animal was assigned to one of three diets: a control diet (CON), being a continuation of the maintenance diet; a high starch (HSt) or a high sugar (HSu) diet. Reticuloruminal pH and motility were recorded throughout the study period. Blood and ruminal samples were taken on day-1 (TP-1), day-2 (TP-2) and day-7 (TP-7) of each challenge week. Four clinical variables were recorded daily: diarrhoea, inappetence, depression and ruminal tympany. The effects of treatment, hour of day and day after treatment on clinical parameters were analysed using linear mixed effects (LME) models. Although both challenge diets resulted in a decline in pH, an increase in the absolute pH residuals and an increase in the number of minutes per day under pH 5.8, systemic inflammation was only detected with the HSt diet. The challenge diets differentially modified amplitude and period of reticuloruminal contractions compared with CON diet and both were associated with an increased probability of diarrhoea. The HSu diet reduced the probability of an animal consuming its complete allocation. Because the challenge diets were derived from complex natural materials (barley and molasses respectively), it is not possible to assign all the differential effects to the difference in starch and sugar concentration: non-starch components of barley or non-sugar components of molasses might have contributed to some of the observations. In conclusion, substituting much of the starch with sugar caused no substantial reduction in the acidosis load, but inflammatory response was reduced while feed rejection was increased.

The New Zealand dairy industry has shown little interest in exploring the impact of gastrointestinal parasitism on productivity in adult dairy cattle and as a consequence there has been little research completed. A randomised clinical trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of mid-lactation anthelmintic treatment on milk production under the extensive New Zealand pastoral dairying system. A random sample of cows from nine commercial dairy herds in the Manawatu region of New Zealand was treated once with pour-on eprinomectin at the dose rate of 0.5mg/kg during the afternoon milking in the period 6 Jan 2013 to 24 Jan 2013. The treatment cows (n=540) were matched to control cows (n=540) within their respective herds and the change in milk production, recorded at the first two herd tests after treatment, was analysed using a linear mixed effects model. The study found a small but significant increase in energy corrected milk production of 0.35kg/day (95% CI 0.05-0.64) at the first and second herd tests after treatment. There were no significant interactions found between treatment and age or between treatment and the bulk tank Ostertagia antibody ELISA ODR indicating that the beneficial response to eprinomectin treatment appeared independent of age of animal or ODR result. A concurrent North Island drought may have affected the response to treatment. Even so, the small effect of eprinomectin treatment on milk production found in this trial is, we believe, not sufficient to advocate whole herd treatment of dairy cows in New Zealand., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. Aims: To determine the prevalence of failure of passive transfer (FPT) of maternal antibodies, to identify management factors associated with FPT, and to determine the relationship between interval from the start of calving and calf management practices on concentrations of total protein in the serum of calves, from a sample of spring-calving dairy herds in the Manawatu region of New Zealand., Methods: This was an observational study involving 11 dairy farms in the Manawatu region serviced by Massey University Farm Services Clinic. Blood samples were collected from calves <1-week-old during August and September 2012 and concentration of total protein in serum was assessed by refractometry. FPT was defined as concentrations of total protein in serum ≤50 g/L. A questionnaire on early calf rearing practices was completed on each farm. Linear mixed and generalised linear mixed models were used to determine associations with concentrations of total protein in serum and risk of FPT., Results: The mean concentration of total protein in serum for the 230 samples collected was 60.6 (SE 0.93) g/L and 57/230 (24.8 (95% CI=19.3‒30.9)%) calves were diagnosed with FPT. Two variables, days from planned start of calving to when the calf was sampled, and reportedly feeding colostrum for the first 4 days post-partum, were associated with increased concentrations of total protein in serum (p<0.05). There was also an association between the odds of FPT for calves sampled in a particular week and the proportion of the total herd calving in that same week (p<0.005)., Conclusions and Clinicial Relevence: Feeding colostrum for 4 days from birth and increasing days from planned start of calving to calf sampling were associated with increased concentrations of total protein in serum. FPT on the surveyed farms appeared to be associated with an inability to adequately manage the total number of new born calves during the busiest period of calving.

Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate, under farm conditions, the use of a teat sealant in addition to whole herd dry cow antibiotic therapy on the risk of clinical mastitis in dairy cattle at pasture, and to evaluate the impact of dry period length on that risk and the impact of the teat sealant on that risk., Methods: Dairy cows in three herds which used routine whole herd antibiotic therapy were randomly assigned to receive either treatment with an internal teat sealant (n=322) or no additional treatment (n=313) at drying-off between March and May 2010. All clinical mastitis cases during the dry period and to the end of the subsequent lactation were recorded by farm staff; factors affecting risk of clinical mastitis were then analysed using a Cox proportional hazards model., Results: Median duration of the dry period was 112 days with >25% of cows having a dry period >130 days. The incidence risk of mastitis during lactation for cows treated with teat sealant was 9.9 (95% CI=6.9-13.7) cases per 100 cows compared with 17.9 (95% CI=13.8-22.6) cases per 100 cows for cows treated with antibiotic alone. The addition of a teat sealant to dry cow antibiotic therapy decreased the risk of clinical mastitis only in the first 33 days after calving (Hazard risk 0.24 (95% CI=0.12-0.48)). Length of dry period did not significantly affect the risk of clinical mastitis, or the effect of adding teat sealant to dry cow antibiotic therapy on the risk of clinical mastitis., Conclusions: In these herds where, based on the mastitis history, whole herd antibiotic therapy had been recommended, the use of a teat sealant significantly reduced the risk of clinical mastitis. This effect was limited to the first 33 days after calving; subsequently there was no significant effect of treatment. There was no effect of dry period length on risk of clinical mastitis, nor any significant interaction with treatment., Clinical Relevance: Combination therapy with teat sealant and antibiotic was effective under New Zealand conditions in herds using whole herd antibiotic treatment at drying off. Teat sealant reduced risk of clinical mastitis in cattle with dry periods substantially longer than 100 days, and there was no evidence that this effect changed as dry period length increased.
