1. Inertial Transformations and the Nonexistence of Tachyons for Spacetime Dimension Greater than Two

Abstract

We consider real linear transformations between two inertial frames with constant relative speed $v$ in a $d$-dimensional spacetime where light moves with constant speed $c=1$ (for some chosen units) in all frames. For $d=2$ we show that the standard relative velocity formula holds and that any associated anisotropic conformal factor is multiplicative under composition of inertial transformations for $|v|\neq 1$. Assuming that the inertial transformation matrix is continuous in a neighbourhood of $v=0$ and differentiable at $v=0$, we determine the conformal factor for all $|v|\neq 1$. For an isotropic spacetime, the general solution reduces to the standard $d=2$ Lorentz transformation for $|v|<1$ or to a Tachyonic transformation for $|v|>1$, first described by Parker in 1969. For $d>2$ we show that no Tachyonic-like inertial transformations exist which are compatible with constant light speed.

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested differences in multiple sclerosis (MS) severity according to ethnicity. METHODS: Data were obtained from the UK MS Register, a prospective longitudinal cohort study of persons with MS. We examined the association between self-reported ethnic background and age at onset, symptom of onset and a variety of participant-reported severity measures. We used adjusted multivariable linear regression models to explore the association between ethnicity and impact of MS, and Cox proportional hazards models to assess disability progression. RESULTS: We analysed data from 17,314 people with MS, including participants from self-reported Black (n = 157) or South Asian (n = 230) ethnic backgrounds. Age at MS onset and diagnosis was lower in those of South Asian (median 30.0) and Black (median 33.0) ethnicity compared with White ethnicity (median 35.0). In participants with online MS severity measures available, we found no statistically significant evidence for an association between ethnic background and physical disability in MS in both cross-sectional and longitudinal analyses. CONCLUSION: We found no association between ethnic background and MS severity in a large, diverse UK cohort. These findings suggest that other factors, such as socioeconomic status and structural inequalities, may explain previous findings.

3. Colouring a graph with position sets

Abstract

In this paper we consider a colouring version of the general position problem. The \emph{$\gp $-chromatic number} is the smallest number of colours needed to colour $V(G)$ such that each colour class has the no-three-in-line property. We determine bounds on this colouring number in terms of the diameter, general position number, size, chromatic number, cochromatic number and total domination number and prove realisation results. We also determine it for several graph classes, including Kneser graphs $K(n,2)$, line graphs of complete graphs, complete multipartite graphs, block graphs and Cartesian products. We also show that the $\gp $-colouring problem is NP-complete.

Abstract

A subset $S$ of vertices of a graph $G$ is in \emph{general position} if no shortest path in $G$ contains three vertices of $S$. The \emph{general position problem} consists of finding the number of vertices in a largest general position set of $G$, whilst the \emph{lower general position problem} asks for a smallest maximal general position set. In this paper we determine the lower general position numbers of several families of Cartesian products. We also show that the existence of small maximal general position sets in a Cartesian product is connected to a special type of general position set in the factors, which we call a \emph{terminal set}, for which adding any vertex $u$ from outside the set creates three vertices in a line with $u$ as an endpoint. We give a constructive proof of the existence of terminal sets for graphs with diameter at most three. We also present conjectures on the existence of terminal sets for all graphs and a lower bound on the lower general position number of a Cartesian product in terms of the lower general position numbers of its factors.

5. On bipartite $(1,1,k)$-mixed graphs

Abstract

Mixed graphs can be seen as digraphs with arcs and edges (or digons, that is, two opposite arcs). In this paper, we consider the case where such graphs are bipartite and in which the undirected and directed degrees are one. The best graphs, in terms of the number of vertices, are presented for small diameters. Moreover, two infinite families of such graphs with diameter $k$ and number of vertices of the order of $2^{k/2}$ are proposed, one of them being totally regular $(1,1)$-mixed graphs. In addition, we present two more infinite families called chordal ring and chordal double ring mixed graphs, which are bipartite and related to tessellations of the plane. Finally, we give an upper bound that improves the Moore bound for bipartite mixed graphs for $r = z = 1$.

Abstract

Automated vehicle (AV) platooning has the potential to improve the safety, operational, and energy efficiency of surface transportation systems by limiting or eliminating human involvement in the driving tasks. The theoretical validity of the AV platooning strategies has been established and practical applications are being tested under real-world conditions. The emergence of sensors, communication, and control strategies has resulted in rapid and constant evolution of AV platooning strategies. In this paper, we review the state-of-the-art knowledge in AV platooning using a five-component platooning framework, which includes vehicle model, information-receiving process, information flow topology, spacing policy, and controller and discuss the advantages and limitations of the components. Based on the discussion about existing strategies and associated limitations, potential future research directions are presented.

8. General position polynomials

Abstract

A subset of vertices of a graph $G$ is a general position set if no triple of vertices from the set lie on a common shortest path in $G$. In this paper we introduce the general position polynomial as $\sum_{i \geq 0} a_i x^i$, where $a_i$ is the number of distinct general position sets of $G$ with cardinality $i$. The polynomial is considered for several well-known classes of graphs and graph operations. It is shown that the polynomial is not unimodal in general, not even on trees. On the other hand, several classes of graphs, including Kneser graphs $K(n,2)$, with unimodal general position polynomials are presented.

9. Genus $g$ Zhu Recursion for Vertex Operator Algebras and Their Modules

Abstract

We describe Zhu recursion for a vertex operator algebra (VOA) and its modules on a genus $g$ Riemann surface in the Schottky uniformisation. We show that $n$-point (intertwiner) correlation functions are written as linear combinations of $(n-1)$-point functions with universal coefficients given by derivatives of the differential of the third kind, the Bers quasiform and certain holomorphic forms. We use this formula to describe conformal Ward identities framed in terms of a canonical differential operator which acts with respect to the Schottky moduli and to the insertion points of the $n$-point function. We consider the generalised Heisenberg VOA and determine all its correlation functions by Zhu recursion. We also use Zhu recursion to derive linear partial differential equations for the Heisenberg VOA partition function and various structures such as the bidifferential of the second kind, holomorphic $1$-forms, the prime form and the period matrix. Finally, we compute the genus $g$ partition function for any rational Euclidean lattice generalised VOA., Comment: Several typos corrected and some notational simplifications introduced. 11. Builder-Blocker General Position Games

Abstract

This paper considers a game version of the general position problem in which a general position set is built through adversarial play. Two players in a graph, Builder and Blocker, take it in turns to add a vertex to a set, such that the vertices of this set are always in general position. The goal of Builder is to create a large general position set, whilst the aim of Blocker is to frustrate Builder's plans by making the set as small as possible. The game finishes when no further vertices can be added without creating three-in-a-line and the number of vertices in this set is the game general position number. We determine this number for some common graph classes and provide sharp bounds, in particular for the case of trees. We also discuss the effect of changing the order of the players.

Abstract Advancements in microscopy techniques and computing technologies have enabled researchers to digitally reconstruct brains at micron scale. As a result, community efforts like the BRAIN Initiative Cell Census Network (BICCN) have generated thousands of whole-brain imaging datasets to trace neuronal circuitry and comprehensively map cell types. This data holds valuable information that extends beyond initial analyses, opening avenues for variation studies and robust classification of cell types in specific brain regions. However, the size and heterogeneity of these imaging data have historically made storage, sharing, and analysis difficult for individual investigators and impractical on a broad community scale. Here, we introduce the Brain Image Library (BIL), a public resource serving the neuroscience community that provides a persistent centralized repository for brain microscopy data. BIL currently holds thousands of brain datasets and provides an integrated analysis ecosystem, allowing for exploration, visualization, and data access without the need to download, thus encouraging scientific discovery and data reuse.

13. Examining the effects of voluntary avoidance behaviour and policy-mediated behaviour change on the dynamics of SARS-CoV-2: A mathematical model

Abstract

Background: Throughout the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, policymakers have had to navigate between recommending voluntary behaviour change and policy-driven behaviour change to mitigate the impact of the virus. While individuals will voluntarily engage in self-protective behaviour when there is an increasing infectious disease risk, the extent to which this occurs and its impact on an epidemic is not known. Methods: This paper describes a deterministic disease transmission model exploring the impact of individual avoidance behaviour and policy-mediated avoidance behaviour on epidemic outcomes during the second wave of SARS-CoV-2 infections in Ontario, Canada (September 1, 2020 to February 28, 2021). The model incorporates an information feedback function based on empirically derived behaviour data describing the degree to which avoidance behaviour changed in response to the number of new daily cases COVID-19. Results: Voluntary avoidance behaviour alone was estimated to reduce the final attack rate by 23.1%, the total number of hospitalizations by 26.2%, and cumulative deaths by 27.5% over 6 months compared to a counterfactual scenario in which there were no interventions or avoidance behaviour. A provincial shutdown order issued on December 26, 2020 was estimated to reduce the final attack rate by 66.7%, the total number of hospitalizations by 66.8%, and the total number of deaths by 67.2% compared to the counterfactual scenario. Conclusion: Given the dynamics of SARS-CoV-2 in a pre-vaccine era, individual avoidance behaviour in the absence of government action would have resulted in a moderate reduction in disease however, it would not have been sufficient to entirely mitigate transmission and the associated risk to the population in Ontario. Government action during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Ontario reduced infections, protected hospital capacity, and saved lives.

14. Lower General Position Sets in Graphs

Abstract

A subset $S$ of vertices of a graph $G$ is a \emph{general position set} if no shortest path in $G$ contains three or more vertices of $S$. In this paper, we generalise a problem of M. Gardner to graph theory by introducing the \emph{lower general position number} $\gp ^-(G)$ of $G$, which is the number of vertices in a smallest maximal general position set of $G$. We show that ${\rm gp}^-(G) = 2$ if and only if $G$ contains a universal line and determine this number for several classes of graphs, including Kneser graphs $K(n,2)$, line graphs of complete graphs, and Cartesian and direct products of two complete graphs. We also prove several realisation results involving the lower general position number, the general position number and the geodetic number, and compare it with the lower version of the monophonic position number. We provide a sharp upper bound on the size of graphs with given lower general position number. Finally we demonstrate that the decision version of the lower general position problem is NP-complete.

Abstract

An $(r,z,k)$-mixed graph $G$ has every vertex with undirected degree $r$, directed in- and out-degree $z$, and diameter $k$. In this paper, we study the case $r=z=1$, proposing some new constructions of $(1,1,k)$-mixed graphs with a large number of vertices $N$. Our study is based on computer techniques for small values of $k$ and the use of graphs on alphabets for general $k$. In the former case, the constructions are either Cayley or lift graphs. In the latter case, some infinite families of $(1,1,k)$-mixed graphs are proposed with diameter of the order of $2\log_2 N$.

19. Mutually avoiding Eulerian circuits

Abstract

Two Eulerian circuits, both starting and ending at the same vertex, are avoiding if at every other point of the circuits they are at least distance 2 apart. An Eulerian graph which admits two such avoiding circuits starting from any vertex is said to be doubly Eulerian. The motivation for this definition is that the extremal Eulerian graphs, i.e. the complete graphs on an odd number of vertices and the cycles, are not doubly Eulerian. The Wiener index of a (hyper)graph is calculated by summing up the distances between all pairs of vertices. We determine the maximum possible Wiener index of a connected $n$-vertex $k$-uniform hypergraph and characterize for every~$n$ all hypergraphs attaining the maximum Wiener index.

Abstract

Let $G$ be a graph. Assume that to each vertex of a set of vertices $S\subseteq V(G)$ a robot is assigned. At each stage one robot can move to a neighbouring vertex. Then $S$ is a mobile general position set of $G$ if there exists a sequence of moves of the robots such that all the vertices of $G$ are visited whilst maintaining the general position property at all times. The mobile general position number of $G$ is the cardinality of a largest mobile general position set of $G$. In this paper, bounds on the mobile general position number are given and exact values determined for certain common classes of graphs including block graphs, rooted products, unicyclic graphs, Cartesian products, joins of graphs, Kneser graphs $K(n,2)$, and line graphs of complete graphs.

In this paper we generalise the notion of visibility from a point in an integer lattice to the setting of graph theory. For a vertex $x$ of a connected graph $G$, we say that a set $S \subseteq V(G)$ is an \emph{$x$-position set} if for any $y \in S$ the shortest $x,y$-paths in $G$ contain no point of $S\setminus \{ y\}$. We investigate the largest and smallest orders of maximum $x$-position sets in graphs, determining these numbers for common classes of graphs and giving bounds in terms of the girth, vertex degrees, diameter and radius. Abstract

BackgroundUreteral obstruction after percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) may require prolonged drainage with a nephrostomy tube (NT) or ureteral stent, but it is not well understood how and why this occurs. The goal of this study was to identify risk factors associated with postoperative ureteral obstruction to help guide drainage tube selection.MethodsProspective data from adult patients enrolled in the Registry for Stones of the Kidney and Ureter (ReSKU) who underwent PCNL from 2016 to 2020 were used. Patients who had postoperative NTs with antegrade imaging-based flow assessment on postoperative day one (POD1) were included. Patients with transplanted kidneys or those without appropriate preoperative imaging were excluded. We assessed the association between patient demographics, stone characteristics, and intraoperative factors using POD1 antegrade flow, a proxy for ureteral patency, as the primary outcome. Stepwise selection was used to develop a multivariate logistic regression model controlling for BMI, stone location, stone burden, ipsilateral ureteroscopy (URS), access location, estimated blood loss, and operative time.ResultsWe analyzed 241 cases for this study; 204 (84.6%) had a visual clearance of stone. Antegrade flow on POD1 was absent in 76 cases (31.5%). Abstract

The search for the smallest possible $d$-regular graph of girth $g$ has a long history, and is usually known as the cage problem. This problem has a natural extension to hypergraphs, where we may ask for the smallest number of vertices in a $d$-regular, $r$-uniform hypergraph of given (Berge) girth $g$. We show that these two problems are in fact very closely linked. By extending the ideas of Cayley graphs to the hypergraph context, we find smallest known hypergraphs for various parameter sets. Because of the close link to the cage problem from graph theory, we are able to use these techniques to find new record smallest cubic graphs of girths 23, 24, 28, 29, 30, 31 and 32., Comment: 8 pages

The order of a $k$-geodetic digraph with minimum out-degree $d$ is bounded below by the directed Moore bound $M(d,k) = 1+d+d^2+\dots +d^k$. The Moore bound can be met only in the trivial cases $d = 1$ and $k = 1$, so it is of interest to look for $k$-geodetic digraphs with out-degree $d$ and smallest possible order $M(d,k)+\epsilon $, where $\epsilon $ is the \emph{excess} of the digraph. Miller, Miret and Sillasen recently ruled out the existence of digraphs with excess one for $k = 3,4$ and $d \geq 2$ and for $k = 2$ and $d \geq 8$. We conjecture that there are no digraphs with excess one for $d,k \geq 2$ and in this paper we investigate the structure of minimal counterexamples to this conjecture. We severely constrain the possible structures of the outlier function and prove the non-existence of certain digraphs with degree three and excess one, as well closing the open cases $k = 2$ and $d = 3,4,5,6,7$ left by the analysis of Miller et al. We further show that there are no involutary digraphs with excess one, i.e. the outlier function of any such digraph must contain a cycle of length $\geq 3$.

Abstract

Background: COVID-19 is primarily known as a respiratory illness; however, many patients present to hospital without respiratory symptoms. The association between non-respiratory presentations of COVID-19 and outcomes remains unclear. We investigated risk factors and clinical outcomes in patients with no respiratory symptoms (NRS) and respiratory symptoms (RS) at hospital admission. Methods: This study describes clinical features, physiological parameters, and outcomes of hospitalised COVID-19 patients, stratified by the presence or absence of respiratory symptoms at hospital admission. RS patients had one or more of: cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, runny nose or wheezing; while NRS patients did not. Results: Of 178,640 patients in the study, 86.4 % presented with RS, while 13.6 % had NRS. NRS patients were older (median age: NRS: 74 vs RS: 65) and less likely to be admitted to the ICU (NRS: 36.7 % vs RS: 37.5 %). NRS patients had a higher crude in-hospital case-fatality ratio (NRS 41.1 % vs. RS 32.0 %), but a lower risk of death after adjusting for confounders (HR 0.88 [0.83–0.93]). Conclusion: Approximately one in seven COVID-19 patients presented at hospital admission without respiratory symptoms. These patients were older, had lower ICU admission rates, and had a lower risk of in-hospital mortality after adjusting for confounders.

Solar system bodies with surface and sub-surface volatiles will show observational evidence of activity when they reach a temperature where those volatiles change from solid to gas and are released. This is most frequently seen in comets, where activity is driven by the sublimation of water, carbon dioxide, or carbon monoxide ices. However, some bodies (notably the asteroid (3200) Phaethon) show initiation of activity at very small heliocentric distances, long after they have reached the sublimation temperatures of these ices. We investigate whether the sodium present in the mineral matrix could act as the volatile element responsible for this activity. We conduct theoretical modeling which indicates that sodium has the potential to sublimate in the conditions that Phaethon experiences, depending on the mineral phase it is held in. To test this, we then exposed samples of the carbonaceous chondrite Allende to varying heating events similar to what would be experienced by low perihelion asteroids. We measured the change in sodium present in each sample, and find that the highest temperature samples show a significant loss of sodium from specific mineral phases over a single heating event, comparable to a day on the surface of Phaethon. Under specific thermal histories possible for Phaethon, this outgassing could be sufficient to explain this object's observed activity. Abstract

The degree/diameter problem for mixed graphs asks for the largest possible order of a mixed graph with given diameter and degree parameters. Similarly the \emph{degree/geodecity} problem concerns the smallest order of a $k$-geodetic mixed graph with given minimum undirected and directed degrees; this is a generalisation of the classical degree/girth problem. In this paper we present new bounds on the order of mixed graphs with given diameter or geodetic girth and exhibit new examples of directed and mixed geodetic cages. In particular, we show that any $k$-geodetic mixed graph with excess one must have geodetic girth two and be totally regular, thereby proving an earlier conjecture of the authors.

Abstract Background Despite a 40% reduction in breast cancer mortality over the last 30 years, not all groups have benefited equally from these gains. A consistent link between later stage of diagnosis and disparities in breast cancer mortality has been observed by race, socioeconomic status, and rurality. Therefore, ensuring equitable geographic access to screening mammography represents an important priority for reducing breast cancer disparities. Access to breast cancer screening was evaluated in Delaware, a state that experiences an elevated burden from breast cancer but is otherwise representative of the US in terms of race and urban–rural characteristics. We first conducted a catchment analysis of mammography facilities. Finding evidence of disparities by race and rurality, we next conducted a location-allocation analysis to identify candidate locations for the establishment of new mammography facilities to optimize equitable access. Methods A catchment analysis using the ArcGIS Pro Service Area analytic tool characterized the geographic distribution of mammography sites and Breast Imaging Centers of Excellence (BICOEs). Poisson regression analyses identified census tract-level correlates of access. Next, the ArcGIS Pro Location-Allocation analytic tool identified candidate locations for the placement of additional mammography sites in Delaware according to several sets of breast cancer screening guidelines. Results The catchment analysis showed that for each standard deviation increase in the number of Black women in a census tract, there were 68% (95% CI 38–85%) fewer mammography units and 89% (95% CI 60–98%) fewer BICOEs. The more rural counties in the state accounted for 41% of the population but only 22% of the BICOEs. The results of the location-allocation analysis depended on which set of screening guidelines were adopted, which included increasing mammography sites in communities with a greater proportion of younger Black women and in rural areas. Conclusions The results of this study illustrate how catchment and location-allocation analytic tools can be leveraged to guide the equitable selection of new mammography facility locations as part of a larger strategy to close breast cancer disparities.

It is shown that every weak Jacobi form of weight zero and index one on a congruence subgroup of the full Jacobi group can be decomposed into $N=4$ superconformal characters. To assess SARS-CoV-2 outcomes, we matched a municipal COVID-19 registry and clinic rosters from a municipal primary care network containing a large HIV clinic and assessed clinical outcomes by HIV status. The risk of severe COVID-19 was higher among people with HIV (PWH, adjusted relative risk = 1.84, 95% confidence interval = 1.05-3.25), while SARS-CoV-2 incidence was lower despite higher testing rates. SARS-CoV-2 vaccination campaigns should prioritize PWH to prevent severe COVID-19 disease given potentially higher risk.

Abstract

A digraph $G$ is \emph{$k$-geodetic} if for any pair of (not necessarily distinct) vertices $u,v \in V(G)$ there is at most one walk of length $\leq k$ from $u$ to $v$ in $G$. In this paper we determine the largest possible size of a $k$-geodetic digraph with given order. We then consider the more difficult problem of the largest size of a strongly-connected $k$-geodetic digraph with given order, solving this problem for $k = 2$ and giving a construction which we conjecture to be extremal for larger $k$. We close with some results on generalised Tur\'{a}n problems for the number of directed cycles and paths in $k$-geodetic digraphs.

The general position problem in graph theory asks for the largest set $S$ of vertices of a graph $G$ such that no shortest path of $G$ contains more than two vertices of $S$. In this paper we consider a variant of the general position problem called the \emph{monophonic position problem}, obtained by replacing `shortest path' by `induced path'. We prove some basic properties and bounds for the monophonic position number of a graph and determine the monophonic position number of some graph families, including unicyclic graphs, complements of bipartite graphs and split graphs. We show that the monophonic position number of triangle-free graphs is bounded above by the independence number. We present realisation results for the general position number, monophonic position number and monophonic hull number. 41. Tackling social exclusion through engagement in football: findings from the 'Kickstart 2 Recovery' programme

Purpose – This study aims to determine whether engagement in a football programme can positively impact the recovery journey of the mental health service users involved from the perspective of the “Kickstart 2 Recovery” (K2R) programme stakeholders. There are many challenges faced by the people with mental health problems, a significant one being social exclusion. Football is a socially valued occupation in Ireland (Moran, 2019) and the K2R programme is an initiative run to combat experiences of isolation and exclusion that those with mental health difficulties may experience. Design/methodology/approach – A descriptive phenomenological approach was taken to the study with the use of semi-structured interviews as the research method. In total, twenty one interviews were carried out and Braun and Clarke’s (2006) thematic analysis was used to analyse the data. Findings – Two themes represent the findings of this paper: the need for pathways and social inclusion, connection and flexibility. These reveal that facilitators are focused on supporting recovery but are unsure of how to overcome barriers to social inclusion. Sports partnerships and programme facilitators have a role to play in accessing community resources, challenging social stigma and creating exit pathways from the group. Originality/value – This study reveals the challenges footballers with mental health difficulties experience when attempting to become more included in their communities and suggestions on how football programmes, such as K2R, could support their inclusion. These findings add to the body of research analysing the issue of social inclusion for people with mental health difficulties.

42. Impact of immune evasion, waning and boosting on dynamics of population mixing between a vaccinated majority and unvaccinated minority.

Abstract

BackgroundWe previously demonstrated that when vaccines prevent infection, the dynamics of mixing between vaccinated and unvaccinated sub-populations is such that use of imperfect vaccines markedly decreases risk for vaccinated people, and for the population overall. Risks to vaccinated people accrue disproportionately from contact with unvaccinated people. In the context of the emergence of Omicron SARS-CoV-2 and evolving understanding of SARS-CoV-2 epidemiology, we updated our analysis to evaluate whether our earlier conclusions remained valid.MethodsWe modified a previously published Susceptible-Infectious-Recovered (SIR) compartmental model of SARS-CoV-2 with two connected sub-populations: vaccinated and unvaccinated, with non-random mixing between groups. Our expanded model incorporates diminished vaccine efficacy for preventing infection with the emergence of Omicron SARS-CoV-2 variants, waning immunity, the impact of prior immune experience on infectivity, "hybrid" effects of infection in previously vaccinated individuals, and booster vaccination. We evaluated the dynamics of an epidemic within each subgroup and in the overall population over a 10-year time horizon.ResultsEven with vaccine efficacy as low as 20%, and in the presence of waning immunity, the incidence of COVID-19 in the vaccinated subpopulation was lower than that among the unvaccinated population across the full 10-year time horizon. The cumulative risk of infection was 3-4 fold higher among unvaccinated people than among vaccinated people, and unvaccinated people contributed to infection risk among vaccinated individuals at twice the rate that would have been expected based on the frequency of contacts. These findings were robust across a range of assumptions around the rate of waning immunity, the impact of "hybrid immunity", frequency of boosting, and the impact of prior infection on infectivity in unvaccinated people.InterpretationAlthough the emergence of the Omicron variants of SARS-CoV-2 has diminished the protective effects of vaccination against infection with SARS-CoV-2, updating our earlier model to incorporate loss of immunity, diminished vaccine efficacy and a longer time horizon, does not qualitatively change our earlier conclusions. Vaccination against SARS-CoV-2 continues to diminish the risk of infection among vaccinated people and in the population as a whole. By contrast, the risk of infection among vaccinated people accrues disproportionately from contact with unvaccinated people.

For a Riemann surface of genus $g\ge 2$ there exists a unique Green's function $G_{N}(x,y)$ which transforms as a weight $N\ge 2$ form in $x$ and a weight $1-N$ form in $y$ and is meromorphic in $x$, with a unique simple pole at $x=y$, but is not meromorphic in $y$. For a Schottky uniformized Riemann surface we consider meromorphic extensions of $G_{N}(x,y)$ called Green's Functions with Extended Meromorphicity or GEM forms. GEM forms are meromorphic in both $x$ and $y$ with a unique simple pole at $x=y$, transform as weight $N\ge 2$ forms in $x$ but as weight $1-N$ quasiperiodic forms in $y$. We give a reformulation of the bijective Bers map and describe a choice of GEM form with an associated canonical basis of normalized holomorphic $N$-forms. We describe an explicit differential operator constructed from $N=2$ GEM forms giving the variation with respect to moduli space parameters of a punctured Riemann surface. We also describe a new expression for the inverse Bers map.

Abstract Understanding the associations and potential drivers of long-term disability in Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is of clinical and prognostic value. Previous data have suggested a link between depression and disability accrual in MS. We aimed to determine whether depression in early MS predicts subsequent accrual of disability. Using data from the UK MS Register, we identified individuals with and without symptoms of depression and anxiety close to disease onset. We used Cox proportional hazards regression to evaluate whether early depressive or anxiety symptoms predict subsequent physical disability worsening, measured using the Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS). We analysed data from 862 people with MS of whom 134 (15.5%) reached an EDSS of ≥ 6.0. AimsTreatment for urinary incontinence (UI) includes pelvic floor muscle training (PFMT). There is limited data appraising the characteristics of PFMT devices. We aimed to ascertain the primary use, strengths and weaknesses of PFMT devices available online, through evaluation of consumer reviews.MethodsWe performed an analysis of PFMT devices on Amazon.com. Four key device categories were recognized. Reviews from the five most frequently-reviewed products per category were analyzed (n = 20). W characterized device use, strengths and weaknesses using thematic analysis.ResultsWe evaluated 2574 PFMT device reviews including 1168 vibrating Kegel balls, 750 non-vibrating Kegel balls, 411 pelvic floor or thigh exercisers, and 245 electric probes. Non-vibrating Kegel balls were rated highest (4.6/5 stars), followed by vibrating Kegel balls, electric probes and pelvic floor or thigh exercisers (4.4/5, 4.1/5, and 3.8/5 stars, respectively). Most reviews were positive (77%) or negative (16%) with few neutral (7%). While all were marketed to treat UI, most reviews did not mention the intended use. Vibrating and non-vibrating Kegel balls and electric probes were most likely to be used for UI, and pelvic floor or thigh exercisers for toning. Some used non-vibrating and vibrating Kegel balls for sexual function. Electric probes were the most beneficial device for incontinence control (27%, 67/245). Twenty-five percent of all product reviews praised device ease of use and good quality or design. A minority of reviewers found products difficult to use, of poor quality or design and uncomfortable.ConclusionConsumers utilized online PFMT devices for multiple purposes, including UI, toning and sexual function. Reviewers generally praised PFMT products, particularly electric probes for UI.

Abstract

Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) and corticobasal syndrome (CBS; the most common phenotype of corticobasal degeneration) are tauopathies with a relentless course, usually starting in the mid-60s and leading to death after an average of 7 years. There is as yet no specific or disease-modifying treatment. Clinical deficits in PSP are numerous, involve the entire neuraxis, and present as several discrete phenotypes. They center on rigidity, bradykinesia, postural instability, gait freezing, supranuclear ocular motor impairment, dysarthria, dysphagia, incontinence, sleep disorders, frontal cognitive dysfunction, and a variety of behavioral changes. CBS presents with prominent and usually asymmetric dystonia, apraxia, myoclonus, pyramidal signs, and cortical sensory loss. The symptoms and deficits of PSP and CBS are amenable to a variety of treatment strategies but most physicians, including many neurologists, are reluctant to care for patients with these conditions because of unfamiliarity with their multiplicity of interacting symptoms and deficits. CurePSP, the organization devoted to support, research, and education for PSP and CBS, created its CurePSP Centers of Care network in North America in 2017 to improve patient access to clinical expertise and develop collaborations. The directors of the 25 centers have created this consensus document outlining best practices in the management of PSP and CBS. They formed a writing committee for each of 12 sub-topics. A 4-member Steering Committee collated and edited the contributions. The result was returned to the entire cohort of authors for further comments, which were considered for incorporation by the Steering Committee. The authors hope that this publication will serve as a convenient guide for all clinicians caring for patients with PSP and CBS and that it will improve care for patients with these devastating but manageable disorders.

49. The Coming out Experiences of Gifted, LGBTQ Students: When, to Whom, and Why Not?

Abstract

The purpose of this exploratory study was to examine the coming out experiences of gifted LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and questioning or queer) alumni from a residential gifted high school. First, we found that gifted LGBTQ alumni (N = 106) realized their sexual orientation/gender identity around 16.6 years old, which is similar to the general population. The year of high school graduation did not correlate with the age of initial realizations, or when they shared. On average, when the participants did share, they waited 2.1 years to share with friends and 3.4 years to share with family. Furthermore, they felt more comfortable sharing within the residential gifted high school than in their home schools. In general, LGBTQ alumni felt more autonomous, competent, and connected to the residential school. Finally, participants reported many barriers to coming out, including both internal struggles (e.g., uncertain themselves) and social fears (e.g., fear of alienation or harassment). These findings can provide guidance for school personnel as they develop effective, support systems.

Introduction: Ruthenium(II) complexes have emerged recently as candidates for anti-cancer therapy, where activity is related to lipohilicity, cellular localization, and specific interactions with biomolecules.Methods: In this work, two novel complexes were synthesized and are reported based on the [Ru(phen)2(dipyrido[3,2-f:2′,3′-h]quinoxaline]2+ framework.Results: Compared to the parent complex, annealing of cyclopenteno and cyclohexeno rings to the extended ligand substantially increased cytotoxicity towards a number of cancer cell lines, and induced apoptosis. The complexes localize in the nuclei of cancer cells and co-locate with DAPI on DNA. DNA binding studies show that both complexes bind strongly to DNA and one complex intercalates DNA like the parent, whilst the other appears to have multiple modes of interaction.Discussion: It is likely that the increased lipophilicity of the novel complexes is a key factor for increasing their cytotoxicity, rather than their DNA binding mode.
