Abstract

Digital divide has been a common concern during the past two or three decades; traditionally, it refers to a gap between developed and developing countries in the adoption and use of digital technologies. Given the importance of the topic, digital divide has been also extensively studied, although, hitherto, there is no previous research that would have linked the concept to online media. Given this gap in the literature, this paper evaluates the "maturity" of online media in 134 countries between 2007 and 2016. Maturity is defined according to the levels of national online media consumption, diversity of political perspectives presented in national online media, and consensus in reporting major political events in national online media. These aspects are explained by considering explanatory factors related to economy, infrastructure, politics, and administration. Abstract

Globally, manufacturing ecosystems are facing the challenge of twin transition, i.e., how to utilize digitalization for improving or transforming the sustainability of manufacturing operations. Here, operations refer widely to the upstream of manufacturing, while the entire product lifecycle also covers the downstream and end-of-life operations. Here, sustainability is understood to consider the impact of the product lifecycle at environmental, social, and governance (ESG) levels. In this article, we explore this progress through the digitalization concept of business-to-business data sharing, and through one example of a manufacturing ecosystem in Finland. We discuss the federated data space concept and the international data spaces (IDS) architecture as technological building blocks of twin transition, and report the first results from an industry−research shared-risk project. Semi-structured interviews and a diary-style reporting from an industry−research IDS proof-of-concept (PoC) experiment are presented and analyzed within a design science research method framework. The findings give the first indications that while data sharing is seen as important and increasing in relevance in industry, it is currently challenging for companies to see how an open standard architecture creates value beyond a single limited ecosystem view. We also highlight possible avenues for further research.

31. Records of continent-continent collisions in the Paleoproterozoic: exploring the effects of convergence obliquity and temperature on P-T-t paths

Abstract

In the Paleoproterozoic era (2.5-1.6 Ga ago), the mode of the plate tectonics was shifting from Archean plume-lid tectonics to modern tectonics, with colder and deeper subduction due to a decreasing mantle potential temperature. Hence, the geodynamic regime was different as well; subduction was more episodic and characterised by frequent slab breakoffs, while weaker lithosphere resulted in wider and lower-relief orogens. Metamorphic rocks also recorded a fingerprint of these conditions, generally lacking evidence of UHP metamorphism and indicating higher temperatures in the lithosphere.However, studying Paleoproterozoic orogens is challenging, as metamorphic rocks at the present-day erosional level often represent the middle-to-lower crustal orogenic interior. We aim to overcome this issue using pressure-temperature-time (P-T-t) paths extracted from generic, geodynamic continent-continent collision models and comparing them to P-T-t paths reconstructed from metamorphic minerals. The models are loosely based on Paleoproterozoic Svecofennian orogen, which formed the majority of the bedrock in southern Finland. It is well studied by number of geological and geophysical means, but physics-based geodynamical models are still lacking.The models were run using the 3D thermo-mechanical, finite-element geodynamic modeling code DOUAR (Braun et al., 2008), which uses the PETSc version of the direct matrix equation solver MUMPS and the landscape evolution model FastScape. The work explored the effects of various continental collision obliquity angles, temperature conditions, and crustal thicknesses in a set of 13 different models. The spatial dimensions of the models are 1000×1000×70 km and crustal thickness values of 35 km and 45 km were used. In the Svecofennian orogeny, continent-continent collision was an event between colder and hotter continental blocks, which is implemented in the models by including a temperature difference of 100ºC along the model base at 70 km depth. Along this boundary, heat production is varied laterally to explore three different temperature scenarios. The convergence obliquity angle is also varied between 0º, 30º and 60º, while the subduction dip angle is constant at 45º.With the thinner 35 km crust, the models do not show much difference in the dynamics between the temperature scenarios, as the crust is too thin to develop wide orogens, and eventual partitioning of strain due to oblique collision. Similarly, the P-T-t paths represent only straightforward retrograde metamorphism, due to simple model dynamics and the lack of large-scale internal orogenic heating. Increasing the crustal thickness to 45 km significantly affects the orogenic development. The Paleoproterozoic temperature scenario with a 45 km crust creates both wide and lower-relief orogens, also producing clear strain partitioning for the 60º obliquity angle. This difference in dynamics further results in more variation in the recorded P-T-t paths, suggesting potential for their use to explore Paleoproterozoic orogen dynamics. Ongoing work is exploring which stable mineral assemblages these P-T-t paths would correspond in metamorphic rocks.

37. A Novel Halogen Bond Acceptor: 1-(4-Pyridyl)-4-Thiopyridine (PTP) Zwitterion

Abstract

Sulfur is a widely used halogen bond (XB) acceptor, but only a limited number of neutral XB acceptors with bifurcated sp3-S sites have been reported. In this work a new bidentate XB acceptor, 1-(4-pyridyl)-4-thiopyridine (PTP), which combines sp3-S and sp2-N acceptor sites, is introduced. Three halogen bonded cocrystals were obtained by using 1,4-diiodobenzene (DIB), 1,4-diiodotetrafluorobenzene (DIFB), and iodopentafluorobenzene (IPFB) as XB donors and PTP as acceptor. The structures of the cocrystals showed some XB selectivity between the S and N donors in PTP. However, the limited contribution of XB to the overall molecular packing in these three cocrystals and the results from DSC measurements clearly point out the synergetic influence and interplay of all noncovalent interactions in crystal packing of these compounds.

48. An Organizational Maturity Model forData Spaces: A Data Sharing Wheel Approach

Abstract

This chapter presents a maturity model for Data Spaces, which provides a management system with associated improvement roadmaps that guide strategies to continuously improve, develop, and manage the data space capability within their organization. It highlights the challenges with data sharing and motivates the benefit of maturity models. This chapter describes the Maturity Model for Data Spaces (MM4DS) and its use to determine an organization’s data space capability maturity. The MM4DS takes an organization’s user-centric/demand-side perspective utilizing a data space. The development process for the MM4DS is discussed, along with the role of design science in the model development process. Finally, the chapter details an illustrative case using the model to benchmark data space capabilities in five fictitious organizations. The MM4DS can be applied within organizations to better manage their data space capabilities, with assessment, providing insights into what they are doing well and where they need to improve.

Abstract

The ruthenium carbonyl compounds, Ru(bpy)(CO)2X2 (X = Cl, Br or I) act as neutral halogen bond (XB) acceptors when co-crystallized with 1,4-diiodotetrafluoro-benzene (DITFB). The halogen bonding strength of the Ru-X⋅⋅⋅I halogen bonds follow the nucleophilic character of the halido ligand. The strongest halogen bond occurs between the chlorido ligand and the iodide atoms of the DITFB. All three halogen bonded complexes form polymeric assemblies in the solid state. In Ru(bpy)(CO)2Cl2⋅DITFB (1) and in Ru(bpy)(CO)2Br2⋅DITFB (2) both halido ligands are halogen bonded to only one DITFB donor. In Ru(bpy)(CO)2I2⋅DITFB (3) only one of the halido ligands is involved in halogen bonding acting as ditopic center for two DITFB donors. The polymeric structures of 1 and 2 are isomorphic wave-like single chain systems, while the iodine complexes form pairs of linear chains attached together with weak F⋅⋅⋅O≡C interactions between the closest neighbors. The stronger polarization of the iodide ligand compared to the Cl or Br ligands favors nearly linear C-I⋅⋅⋅I angles between the XB donor and the metal complex supporting the linear arrangement of the halogen bonded chain.
