Arts and cultural heritage is a potent reflection of the identity of a community. The art of traditional handicraft weaving in any society is dependent on the resources available in his environment and the needs of the particular community. The Dusun Tindal of Kota Belud is rich in weaving craft traditions with kinulung as one of its distinctive products. Kinulung is unique with its own specific purpose and simple design, and has been able to withstand modernisation and change. However the factors of adaptation, environmental change, and modern technological transformation could pose as threats to the traditional and heritage elements in the production of the kinulung. This study is important as a platform for the promotion of continuity and resilience of the Dusun Tindal heritage. Kinulung documentaton will clarify various aspects of the design and purpose elements of this traditional craft. The study focuses on the design and meaning presented in the kinulung weaving tradition as an object of culture in the community. Material for this study was derived from field work through observations, interviews and notations. The findings of the study indicate that the design and motif of the kinulung reflect the cultural values and local knowledge of the Dusun Tindal.

This article focuses on social hierarchy and ethnographic observation research based on cultural artifacts that are considered to have sacred value in Iban culture in Sarawak. Sacred artifacts are cultural objects that are believed to have spiritual values and mystical powers that are capable of protecting and bringing harmony to their owners if executed according to customs and rituals. This belief is driven by the ancestral religion of Pengarap Lama and the habitat that has been home to the Iban community since time immemorial. In proving the critical findings, qualitative-based research methods have been implemented based on in-depth observations, interviews, and documentation. The research findings found that sacred artifacts are still important in the culture of the Iban community even though they have embraced new religions such as Islam and Christianity. Therefore, in preserving the significant value of sacred artifacts in Iban culture, this article is an effort to archive the culture of the various races community in Sarawak, especially the Iban community. One of the famous traditional textiles in Sarawak is the Iban Pua Kumbu. This paper presents the crystallographic patterns, geometry concept and symmetry analysis present in the Iban Pua Kumbu patterns. This paper will also look at the colour-symmetrical patterns and motifs used in these textiles. The Ibans' weaving technique subtly incorporates geometric concepts using exquisite and precious designs. The Pua Kumbu of the Iban can be similarly classified according to the patterns displayed in the wallpaper and frieze. The current research findings could assist students to learn mathematics. In this study, samples comprising eight (8) repeated patterns were collected from field visits, museums in the Sarawak, and personal collections of scholars. From the findings, it shows that all Pua Kumbu patterns bear at least one of the seventeen crystallographic groups. Most of the Pua Kumbu motifs are symmetrical and those motifs is mathematically identified as a design. The Pua Kumbu contains decorative patterns whose relevance and imaginative portrayal are demonstrated by the intricacy of the creative process. Pua Kumbu weavers appear to have excellent memory skills, strong visual perception, and an innate aptitude for applying mathematics to their work. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study associated to the ethnography and conservation of materials in the Iban’s culture within the Sarawak museum. For a century, the Sarawak museum has significance roles in the effort to conserve and restoration of the Sarawak indigenous heritage, especially Iban’s cultural artifact that experienced several phases of development and artefact management throughout different timeline, change of legacies, cultural relevant and challenges addition to the issue of cultural artifact management. This study applied a qualitative approach of identifying, understanding and analyze the conservation of Iban’s artifact through interview with relevant informant by the in-depth interview. Other than that, secondary resources were referred to support the studies relevant. The studies have established an occurrence of varying pattern in the development of the field of artifact conservation in the Sarawak museum and the decline of cultural Iban’s artifact due to certain factors. The purpose of this research is as an effort to archive the preservation of cultural artifacts of the Iban community. Museum is a reflection of the civilization from a country in the aspects of heritage, culture, tradition, economy, politic and social. Museum functions as to store and conserve cultural objects that have significance and value in term of forming the identity of a country. The Sarawak museum has been standing for a century and act as a silent witness to the various changes in culture, history, politic, including social within the state. Therefore, this paperwork emphasized on the histories of Sarawak museum since the Brooke's administration until the modern Malaysia. The methodology of this paper applied the qualitative approach by interviewing multiple curators at the Sarawak museum department and reference through secondary data obtained by books and journals as to support the research. The research findings focus on the difference and renewal in the development phase of the Sarawak museum department throughout the year.
