Abstract

Muscular manifestations of sarcoidosis are commonly found on biopsy but rare on correlated imaging. We present a rare case of a 36-year-old male patient with sarcoid myositis and image findings of active myositis in the lower back and pelvic girdle musculature. This case suggests considering sarcoidosis as a differential diagnosis in the setting of chest findings and new lower back and lower extremity weakness.

Abstract

Fat emboli are a common phenomenon, but are rarely detected or reported on extremity CT imaging. We present a case of fat embolus in the popliteal vein in the setting of a femoral fracture. This is the most distal fat embolus described in the literature. There are no guidelines regarding intervention if a fat embolus is detected in a peripheral vein on CT. A review of all the previous cases of peripheral fat emboli is presented for reference.

Abstract

Natural, spontaneous speech often shows extreme reductions of many speech segments, to the point of apparent deletion. Where the flap allophone of /t/ and /d/ is expected in American English, one frequently sees an approximant‐like or even vocalic pattern, rather than a clear flap. Still, such tokens are usually perceived as containing a /t/ or /d/ (e.g. 'needle' even with a very reduced /d/ is usually not perceived as 'kneel'). The current work identifies acoustic characteristics of reduced 'flaps' and presents phonetic identification data for continua that manipulate these characteristics. Presence vs. absence of a dip in intensity, duration of that dip, and degree of that dip in decibels are manipulated. Degree of intensity dip has the strongest effect, with a minimal dip in intensity more likely to be perceived as 'kneel' and a strong dip in intensity more likely to be perceived as 'needle.' Abstract

In its largest outbreak, Ebola virus disease is spreading through Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Nigeria. We sequenced 99 Ebola virus genomes from 78 patients in Sierra Leone to ~2000× coverage. We observed a rapid accumulation of interhost and intrahost genetic variation, allowing us to characterize patterns of viral transmission over the initial weeks of the epidemic. This West African variant likely diverged from central African lineages around 2004, crossed from Guinea to Sierra Leone in May 2014, and has exhibited sustained human-to-human transmission subsequently, with no evidence of additional zoonotic sources. Because many of the mutations alter protein sequences and other biologically meaningful targets, they should be monitored for impact on diagnostics, vaccines, and therapies critical to outbreak response., Organismic and Evolutionary Biology

Abstract

To investigate whether the efficacy of live vaccines is influenced by the mode of vaccine delivery, a widely-used UK live commercial Salmonella Enteritidis vaccine was delivered to pullet chicks either by spray, in drinking water, or in combination with a bivalent vaccine containing inactivated Salmonella Enteritidis and Salmonella Typhimurium. The birds were subsequently challenged with 102 or 108 colony-forming units (cfu) of Salmonella Enteritidis through drinking water at either six or 20 weeks of age. Ten days after the challenge, the birds were euthanased and their caecal contents cultured for Salmonella. All of the vaccinated groups contained fewer Salmonella Enteritidis-positive birds than the unvaccinated groups. The ‘spray-vaccinated’ group contained significantly fewer Salmonella Enteritidis-positive birds than the ‘water-vaccinated’ group after challenge with 108 cfu at 20 weeks. However, there was little or no difference at the other challenge time points between the groups that received vaccine through different modes of delivery.
