We propose a novel approach to electron correlation for multireference systems. It is based on particle-hole (ph) and particle-particle (pp) theories in the second-order, developed in the random phase approximation (RPA) framework for multireference wavefunctions. We show a formal correspondence (duality), between contributions to the correlation energy in the ph and pp pictures. It allows us to describe correlation energy by rigorously combining pp and ph terms, avoiding correlation double counting. The multireference ph, pp, and the combined correlation methods are applied to ground and excited states of systems in the intermediate and strong correlation regimes and compared with the multireference second-order perturbation method (MRPT2). It is shown that the pp approximation fails to describe dissociation of multiple bonds. The ph-pp combined method is overall superior to both ph and pp alone. It parallels good accuracy of the second-order perturbation theory for ground states and singlet excitation energies. For the singlet-triplet gaps of biradicals its accuracy is significantly better. This is impressive, taking into account that it relies only on one- and two-body density matrices, while MRPT2 methods typically require density matrices up to the four-body., Comment: Additional Supplementary File

The new generation of proposed light-emitting molecules for OLEDs has raised a considerable research interest due to its exceptional feature-a negative singlet-triplet (ST) gap violating the Hund's multiplicity rule in the excited S1 and T1 states. We investigate the role of spin polarization in the mechanism of ST gap inversion. Spin polarization is associated with doubly excited determinants of certain types, whose presence in the wavefunction expansion favors the energy of the singlet state more than that of the triplet. Using a perturbation theory-based model for spin polarization, we propose a simple descriptor for prescreening of candidate molecules with negative ST gaps and prove its usefulness for heptazine-type molecules. Numerical results show that the quantitative effect of spin polarization is approximately inverse-proportional to the HOMO-LUMO exchange integral. Comparison of single- and multireference coupled- cluster predictions of ST gaps shows that the former methods provide good accuracy by correctly balancing the effects of doubly excited determinants and dynamic correlation. We also show that accurate ST gaps may be obtained using a complete active space model supplemented with dynamic correlation from multireference adiabatic connection theory.

We present the expansion to the expectation value coupled cluster theory (XCC) to the wavefunctions that include the inter electronic distances $r_{12}$ explicitly. We have extended our algebraic manipulation code \paldus to deal with the rems arising in the CC-F12 theory. We present the full working expressions for the one-electron density matrix (1RDM) and cumulant of the two-electron density matrix ($\lambda$-2RDM) in the framework of XCC-F12 theory. We discuss the possible approximations the expressions.

In this work we present a coupled cluster based approach to the computation of the spin orbit coupling matrix elements. The working expressions are derived from the quadratic response function with the coupled cluster parametrization, using the auxiliary excitation operator S. Systematic approximations are proposed with the CCSD and CC3 levels of theory. The new method is tested by computing lifetimes of several electronic states of Ca, Sr and Ba atoms, with Gaussian and Slater basis sets. We present a general methodology to evaluate matrix elements of the effective core potentials (ECPs) within one-electron basis set of Slater-type orbitals (STOs). The scheme is based on translation of individual STO distributions in the framework of Barnett-Coulson method. We discuss different types of integrals which naturally appear and reduce them to few basic quantities which can be calculated recursively or purely numerically. Additionally, we consider evaluation of the STOs matrix elements involving the core polarisation potentials (CPP) and effective spin-orbit potentials. Construction of the STOs basis sets designed specifically for use with ECPs is discussed and differences in comparison with all-electron basis sets are briefly summarised. We verify the validity of the present approach by calculating excitation energies, static dipole polarisabilities and valence orbital energies for the alkaline earth metals (Ca, Sr, Ba). Finally, we evaluate interaction energies, permanent dipole moments and ionisation energies for barium and strontium hydrides, and compare them with the best available experimental and theoretical data., Comment: submitted to Phys. We introduce a new method for the computation of the transition moments between the excited electronic states based on the expectation value formalism of the coupled cluster theory [B. Jeziorski and R. Moszynski, Int. J. Quant. Chem. 48, 161 (1993)]. The working expressions of the new method solely employ the coupled cluster amplitudes. In the approximation adopted in the present paper the cluster expansion is limited to single, double, and linear triple excitations. The computed dipole transition probabilities for the singlet-singlet and triplet-triplet transitions in alkali earth atoms agree well with the available theoretical and experimental data. In contrast to the existing coupled cluster response theory, the matrix elements obtained by using our approach satisfy the Hermitian symmetry even if the excitations in the cluster operator are truncated. As a part of the numerical evidence for the new method, we report calculations of the transition moments between the excited triplet states which have not yet been reported in the literature within the coupled cluster theory. Theory of one-electron transition density matrices has been formulated within the time-independent coupled cluster method for the polarization propagator [R. Moszynski, P. S. \.Zuchowski, and B. Jeziorski, Coll. Czech. Chem. Commun. {\bf 70}, 1109 (2005)]. Working expressions have been obtained and implemented with the coupled cluster method limited to single, double, and linear triple excitations (CC3). Selected dipole and quadrupole transition probabilities of the alkali earth atoms, computed with the new transition density matrices are compared to the experimental data. Good agreement between theory and experiment is found. The results obtained with the new approach are of the same quality as the results obtained with the linear response coupled cluster theory (LRCC). The one-electron density matrices for the ground state in the CC3 approximation have also been implemented. The dipole moments for a few representative diatomic molecules have been computed with several variants of the new approach, and the results are discussed to choose the approximation with the best balance between the accuracy and computational efficiency.
