Fermionic Gaussian states are eigenstates of quadratic Hamiltonians and widely used in quantum many-body problems. We propose a highly efficient algorithm that converts fermionic Gaussian states to matrix product states. It can be formulated for finite-size systems without translation invariance, but becomes particularly appealing when applied to infinite systems with translation invariance. If the ground states of a topologically ordered system on infinite cylinders are expressed as matrix product states, then the fixed points of the transfer matrix can be harnessed to filter out the anyon eigenbasis, also known as minimally entangled states. This allows for efficient computation of universal properties such as entanglement spectrum and modular matrices. The potential of our method is demonstrated by numerical calculations in two chiral spin liquids that have the same topological orders as the bosonic Laughlin and Moore-Read states, respectively. The anyon eigenbasis for the first one has been worked out before and serves as a useful benchmark. The anyon eigenbasis of the second one is, however, not transparent and its successful construction provides a nontrivial corroboration of our method., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

The low-energy physics of Tomonaga-Luttinger liquids (TLLs) is controlled by the Luttinger parameter. We demonstrate that this parameter can be extracted from a single wave function for one-component TLLs with periodic boundary condition. This method relies on the fact that TLLs are described by conformal field theory in which crosscap states can be constructed. The overlaps between the crosscap states and the ground state as well as some excited states are proved to be universal numbers that directly reveal the Luttinger parameter. In microscopic lattice models, crosscap states are formed by putting each pair of antipodal sites into a maximally entangled state. Analytical and numerical calculations are performed in a few representative models to substantiate the conformal field theory prediction. The extracted Luttinger parameters are generally quite accurate in finite-size systems with moderate lengths, so there is no need to perform data fitting and/or finite-size scaling., Comment: 6+9 pages, 2 figures

We propose a novel mechanism of impurity screening in (1+1)$d$ quantum critical states described by conformal field theories (CFTs). An impurity can be screened if it has the same quantum numbers as some gapless degrees of freedom of the CFT. The common source of these degrees of freedom is the chiral primary fields of the CFT, but we uncover that topological defect lines of the CFT may also take this role. Theoretical analysis relies on the insight that the impurities can be interpreted as edge modes of certain symmetry-protected topological (SPT) states. By stacking a SPT state with a CFT, one or two interfaces on which the SPT edge modes reside are created. If screening occurs due to topological defect lines, a symmetry-enriched CFT with exotic boundary states are obtained. The boundary conditions that appear in these cases are difficult to achieve using previously known methods. Numerical simulations are performed in two quantum spin chains whose bulks are described by the SU(3)$_{1}$ and Spin(5)$_{1}$ CFTs and edges are coupled to spin-1/2 impurities. Approaching the long-time dynamics of non-Markovian open quantum systems presents a challenging task if the bath is strongly coupled. Recent proposals address this problem through a representation of the so-called process tensor in terms of a tensor network. We show that for Gaussian environments highly efficient contraction to matrix product operator (MPO) form can be achieved with infinite MPO evolution methods, leading to significant computational speed-up over existing proposals. The result structurally resembles open system evolution with carefully designed auxiliary degrees of freedom, as in hierarchical or pseudomode methods. Here, however, these degrees of freedom are generated automatically by the MPO evolution algorithm. Moreover, the semi-group form of the resulting propagator enables us to explore steady-state physics, such as phase transitions.

We introduce a family of SO($n$)-symmetric spin chains which generalize the transverse-field Ising chain for $n=1$. These spin chains are defined with Gamma matrices and can be exactly solved by mapping to $n$ species of itinerant Majorana fermions coupled to a static $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge field. Their phase diagrams include a critical point described by the $\mathrm{Spin}(n)_{1}$ conformal field theory as well as two distinct gapped phases. We show that one of the gapped phases is a trivial phase and the other realizes a symmetry-protected topological phase when $n \geq 2$. These two gapped phases are proved to be related to each other by a Kramers-Wannier duality. We study quantum phase transitions in Bose-Fermi mixtures driven by interspecies interaction in the quantum Hall regime. In the absence of such an interaction, the bosons and fermions form their respective fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states at certain filling factors. A symmetry-protected topological (SPT) state is identified as the ground state for strong interspecies interaction. The phase transitions between them are proposed to be described by Chern-Simons-Higgs field theories. For a simple microscopic Hamiltonian, we present numerical evidence for the existence of the SPT state and a continuous transition to the FQH state. It is also found that the entanglement entropy between the bosons and fermions exhibits scaling behavior in the vicinity of this transition., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

We show that the Klein bottle entropy [Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 261603 (2017)] for conformal field theories (CFTs) perturbed by a relevant operator is a universal function of the dimensionless coupling constant. The universal scaling of the Klein bottle entropy near criticality provides an efficient approach to extract the scaling dimension of lattice operators via data collapse. We develop a formalism for constructing particle-number-conserving Gaussian fermionic projected entangled pair states [U(1)-GfPEPS] and show that these states can describe ground states of band insulators and gapless fermions with band touching points. When using them as variational Ans\"{a}tze for two Dirac fermion systems ($\pi$-flux model on the square lattice and $[0,\pi]$-flux model on the kagome lattice), we find that the U(1)-GfPEPS, even with a relatively small bond dimension, can accurately approximate the Dirac Fermi sea ground states. By applying Gutzwiller projectors on top of these U(1)-GfPEPS, we obtain PEPS representation of U(1)-Dirac spin liquid states for spin-1/2 systems. With state-of-the-art tensor network numerics, the critical exponent in the spin-spin correlation function of the Gutzwiller-projected $\pi$-flux state is estimated to be $\eta \approx 1.7$.

We investigate the physics of projected d-wave pairing states using their fermionic projected entangled pair state (fPEPS) representation. First, we approximate a d-wave Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer state using the Gaussian fPEPS. Next, we translate the resulting state into fPEPS tensors and implement the Gutzwiller projection which removes double occupancy by modifying the local tensor elements. The tensor network representation of the projected d-wave pairing state allows us to evaluate physical quantities in the thermodynamic limit without employing the Gutzwiller approximation. Despite having very few variational parameters, such physically motivated tensor network states are shown to exhibit competitive energies for the doped t-J model. We expect that such construction offers useful initial states and guidance for variational tensor network calculations., Comment: 9 pages, 7 figures

We consider a chiral spin liquid constructed using the parton theory. This state supports non-Abelian anyons and neutral fermions, which share some similarities with the celebrated Moore-Read state. The edge physics of the parton state and the Moore-Read state is very different. Based on conformal field theory (CFT) analysis, it is proposed that the edge states exhibit an emergent SO(5) symmetry. The counting of edge states in the low-lying SO(5)$_{1}$ CFT towers is computed. The chiral spin liquid is generated using tensor network methods, which allows us to confirm the SO(5)$_{1}$ counting using entanglement spectrum. An additional feature of multiple branches in the entanglement spectrum is observed and analyzed.

We propose a series of models with inverse-square interactions, for which the ground states have an exact closed form, that describe one localized spin-$1/2$ Kondo impurity coupled to Luttinger liquids of itinerant bosons or fermions in the continuum or on a lattice. The model Hamiltonians contain two parts: a two-component Calogero-Sutherland model with open boundary condition in the continuum or a long-range $t \textendash J$-type model on the lattice, and long-range Kondo couplings between the impurity and the particles. The wave functions of the ground states in a certain basis have Jastrow product forms with powers depending on the particle statistics. It is shown that the wave functions can be expressed as chiral correlators of certain conformal field theories, which reveals that the particles are fractionalized to fully screen the Kondo impurity. We introduce a many-body topological invariant, called the topological disorder parameter (TDP), to characterize gapped quantum phases with global internal symmetry in (2+1)d. TDP is defined as the constant correction that appears in the ground state expectation value of a partial symmetry transformation applied to a connected spatial region $M$, the absolute value of which scales generically as $\exp(-\alpha l+\gamma)$ where $l$ is the perimeter of $M$ and $\gamma$ is the TDP. Motivated by a topological quantum field theory interpretation of the operator, we show that $e^\gamma$ can be related to the quantum dimension of the symmetry defect, and provide a general formula for $\gamma$ when the entanglement Hamiltonian of the topological phase can be described by a (1+1)d conformal field theory (CFT). A special case of TDP is equivalent to the topological R\'enyi entanglement entropy when the symmetry is the cyclic permutation of the replica of the gapped phase. We then investigate several examples of lattice models of topological phases, both analytically and numerically, in particular when the assumption of having a CFT edge theory is not satisfied. We also consider an example of partial translation symmetry in Wen's plaquette model and show that the result can be understood using the edge CFT. The nature of the ground state for the $S = 1/2$ kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet (KHAF) has been elusive. We revisit this challenging problem and provide numerical evidence that its ground state might be a chiral spin liquid. Combining the density matrix renormalization group method and analytical analyses, we demonstrate that the previously observed chiral spin liquid phase in the KHAF with longer-range couplings is stable in a broader region. We characterize the nature of the ground state by computing energy derivatives, revealing ground-state degeneracy arising from spontaneous breaking of time-reversal symmetry, and targeting the semion sector. We further investigate the phase diagram in the vicinity of the KHAF and observe a $\sqrt{3}\times\sqrt{3}$ magnetically ordered phase and two valence-bond crystal phases.

We provide an efficient and accurate method for converting Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov wave functions into matrix product states (MPSs). These wave functions, also known as Bogoliubov vacua, exhibit a peculiar entanglement structure that the eigenvectors of the reduced density matrix are also Bogoliubov vacua. We exploit this important feature to obtain their optimal MPS approximation and derive an explicit formula for corresponding MPS matrices. The performance of our method is benchmarked with the Kitaev chain and the Majorana-Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice. We perform a tensor network simulation of the (1+1)-dimensional $O(3)$ nonlinear $\sigma$-model with $\theta=\pi$ term. Within the Hamiltonian formulation, this field theory emerges as the finite-temperature partition function of a modified quantum rotor model decorated with magnetic monopoles. Using the monopole harmonics basis, we derive the matrix representation for this modified quantum rotor model, which enables tensor network simulations. We employ our recently developed continuous matrix product operator method [Tang et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 125, 170604 (2020)] to study the finite-temperature properties of this model and reveal its massless nature. We explore the topological defects of the critical three-state Potts spin system on the torus, Klein bottle and cylinder. A complete characterization is obtained by breaking down the Fuchs-Runkel-Schweigert construction of 2d rational CFT to the lattice setting. This is done by applying the strange correlator prescription to the recently obtained tensor network descriptions of string-net ground states in terms of bimodule categories [Lootens, Fuchs, Haegeman, Schweigert, Verstraete, SciPost Phys. 10, 053 (2021)]. The symmetries are represented by matrix product operators (MPO), as well as intertwiners between the diagonal tetracritical Ising model and the non-diagonal three-state Potts model. Our categorical construction lifts the global transfer matrix symmetries and intertwiners, previously obtained by solving Yang-Baxter equations, to MPO symmetries and intertwiners that can be locally deformed, fused and split. Model wave functions constructed from (1+1)D conformal field theory (CFT) have played a vital role in studying chiral topologically ordered systems. There usually exist multiple degenerate ground states when such states are placed on the torus. The common practice for dealing with this degeneracy within the CFT framework is to take a full correlator on the torus, which includes both holomorphic and antiholomorphic sectors, and decompose it into several conformal blocks. In this paper, we propose a pure chiral approach for the torus wave function construction. By utilizing the operator formalism, the wave functions are written as chiral correlators of holormorphic fields restricted to each individual topological sector. This method is not only conceptually much simpler, but also automatically provides us the anyon eigenbasis of the degenerate ground states (also known as the "minimally entangled states"). As concrete examples, we construct the full set of degenerate ground states for SO($n$)$_1$ and SU($n$)$_1$ chiral spin liquids on the torus, the former of which provide a complete wave function realization of Kitaev's sixteenfold way of anyon theories. The simplest spin-orbital model can host a nematic spin-orbital liquid state on the triangular lattice. We provide clear evidence that the ground state of the SU(4) Kugel-Khomskii model on the triangular lattice can be well described by a "single" Gutzwiller projected wave function with an emergent parton Fermi surface, despite it exhibits strong finite-size effect in quasi-one-dimensional cylinders. The finite-size effect can be resolved by the fact that the parton Fermi surface consists of open orbits in the reciprocal space. Thereby, a stripy liquid state is expected in the two-dimensional limit, which preserves the SU(4) symmetry while breaks the translational symmetry by doubling the unit cell along one of the lattice vector directions. It is indicative that these stripes are critical and the central charge is $c=3$, in agreement with the SU(4)$_1$ Wess-Zumino-Witten conformal field theory. In the physics of the Fractional Quantum Hall (FQH) effect, a zoo of Abelian topological phases can be obtained by varying the magnetic field. Aiming to reach the same phenomenology in spin-like systems, we propose a family of SU($N$)-symmetric models in the fundamental representation, on the square lattice with short-range interactions restricted to triangular units, a natural generalization for arbitrary $N$ of an SU($3$) model studied previously where time-reversal symmetry is broken explicitly. Guided by the recent discovery of SU($2$)$_1$ and SU($3$)$_1$ chiral spin liquids (CSL) on similar models we search for topological SU($N$)$_1$ CSL in some range of the Hamiltonian parameters via a combination of complementary numerical methods such as exact diagonalizations (ED), infinite density matrix renormalization group (iDMRG) and infinite Projected Entangled Pair State (iPEPS). Extensive ED on small (periodic and open) clusters up to $N=10$ and an innovative SU($N$)-symmetric version of iDMRG to compute entanglement spectra on (infinitely-long) cylinders in all topological sectors provide unambiguous signatures of the SU($N$)$_1$ character of the chiral liquids. An SU($4$)-symmetric chiral PEPS, constructed in a manner similar to its SU($2$) and SU($3$) analogs, is shown to give a good variational ansatz of the $N=4$ ground state, with chiral edge modes originating from the PEPS holographic bulk-edge correspondence. Spin-orbital liquids are quantum disordered states in systems with entangled spin and orbital degrees of freedom. We study exactly solvable spin-orbital models in two dimensions with selected Heisenberg-, Kitaev-, and $\Gamma$-type interactions, as well as external magnetic fields. These models realize a variety of spin-orbital-liquid phases featuring dispersing Majorana fermions with Fermi surfaces, nodal Dirac or quadratic band touching points, or full gaps. In particular, we show that Zeeman magnetic fields can stabilize nontrivial flux patterns and induce metamagnetic transitions between states with different topological character. Solvable nearest-neighbor biquadratic spin-orbital perturbations can be tuned to stabilize zero-energy flat bands. We discuss in detail the examples of $\mathrm{SO}(2)$- and $\mathrm{SO}(3)$-symmetric spin-orbital models on the square and honeycomb lattices, and use group-theoretical arguments to generalize to $\mathrm{SO}(\nu)$-symmetric models with arbitrary integer $\nu > 1$. These results extend the list of exactly solvable models with spin-orbital-liquid ground states and highlight the intriguing general features of such exotic phases. We propose resonating valence bond wave functions for a spin-1 system on the torus that realize a non-Abelian chiral spin liquid. The wave functions take the form of infinite dimensional matrix product states constructed from conformal blocks of the $\mathrm{SO}(3)_{1}$ Wess-Zumino-Witten model. This means that they are lattice analogues of the bosonic Moore-Read state introduced in fractional quantum Hall systems. We study transitions between topological phases featuring emergent fractionalized excitations in two-dimensional models for Mott insulators with spin and orbital degrees of freedom. The models realize fermionic quantum critical points in fractionalized Gross-Neveu$^\ast$ universality classes in (2+1) dimensions. They are characterized by the same set of critical exponents as their ordinary Gross-Neveu counterparts, but feature a different energy spectrum, reflecting the nontrivial topology of the adjacent phases. We exemplify this in a square-lattice model, for which an exact mapping to a $t$-$V$ model of spinless fermions allows us to make use of large-scale numerical results, as well as in a honeycomb-lattice model, for which we employ $\epsilon$-expansion and large-$N$ methods to estimate the critical behavior. We propose to boost the performance of the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) in two dimensions by using Gutzwiller projected states as the initialization ansatz. When the Gutzwiller projected state is properly chosen, the notorious "local minimum" issue in DMRG can be circumvented and the precision of DMRG can be improved by orders of magnitude without extra computational cost. Moreover, this method allows to quantify the closeness of the initial Gutzwiller projected state and the final converged state after DMRG sweeps, thereby sheds light on whether the Gutzwiller ansatz captures the essential entanglement features of the actual ground state for a given Hamiltonian. In two dimensions, the topological order described by $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge theory coupled to free or weakly interacting fermions with a nonzero spectral Chern number $\nu$ is classified by $\nu \; \mathrm{mod}\; 16$ as predicted by Kitaev [Ann. Phys. 321, 2 (2006)]. Here we provide a systematic and complete construction of microscopic models realizing this so-called sixteenfold way of anyon theories. These models are defined by $\Gamma$ matrices satisfying the Clifford algebra, enjoy a global $\mathrm{SO}(\nu)$ symmetry, and live on either square or honeycomb lattices depending on the parity of $\nu$. We show that all these models are exactly solvable by using a Majorana representation and characterize the topological order by calculating the topological spin of an anyonic quasiparticle and the ground-state degeneracy. We present an algorithm for studying quantum systems at finite temperature using continuous matrix product operator representation. The approach handles both short-range and long-range interactions in the thermodynamic limit without incurring any time discretization error. Moreover, the approach provides direct access to physical observables including the specific heat, local susceptibility, and local spectral functions. After verifying the method using the prototypical quantum XXZ chains, we apply it to quantum Ising models with power-law decaying interactions and on the infinite cylinder, respectively. Recent work by Wu {\em et al.} [arXiv:1910.11011] proposed a numerical method, so-called matrix product operator-matrix product state (MPO-MPS) method, by which several types of quantum many-body wave functions, in particular, the projected Fermi sea state, can be efficiently represented as a tensor network. In this paper, we generalize the MPO-MPS method to study Gutzwiller projected paired states of fermions, where the maximally localized Wannier orbitals for Bogoliubov quasiparticles/quasiholes have been adapted to improve the computational performance. The study of $SO(3)$-symmetric spin-1 chains reveals that this new method has better performance than variational Monte Carlo for gapped states and similar performance for gapless states. We perform the state-of-the-art tensor network simulations directly in the thermodynamic limit to clarify the critical properties of the $q$-state clock model on the square lattice. We determine accurately the two phase transition temperatures through the singularity of the classical analog of the entanglement entropy, and provide extensive numerical evidences to show that both transitions are of the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) type for $q\ge 5$ and that the low-energy physics of this model is well described by the $\mathbb{Z}_q$-deformed sine-Gordon theory. We study two-component bosons on the Harper-Hofstadter model with two legs. The synthetic magnetic fields for the two types of bosons point to either the same direction or opposite directions. The bosons have hardcore intra-species interaction such that there can be no more than one boson of the same type on each lattice site. For certain filling factors in the absence of inter-species interaction, each component realizes a vortex Mott insulator with rung current or a Meissner superfluid without rung current. The system undergoes phase transitions to other phases as inter-species interaction is turned on, which are characterized numerically using the density matrix renormalization group method and supplemented with analytical studies when possible. The vortex Mott insulator transits to a gapped Meissner phase without rung current and the Meissner superfluid transits to a gapped vortex phase with rung current. Tensor network states and parton wave functions are two pivotal methods for studying quantum many-body systems. This work connects these two subjects as we demonstrate that a variety of parton wave functions, such as projected Fermi sea and projected fermionic or bosonic paired states, can be represented exactly as tensor networks. The results can be compressed into matrix product states with moderate bond dimensions so various physical quantities can be computed efficiently. For the projected Fermi sea, we develop an excellent compression scheme with high fidelity using maximally localized Wannier orbitals. Numerical calculations on two parton wave functions demonstrate that our method exceeds commonly adopted Monte Carlo methods in some aspects. It produces energy and correlation function with very high accuracy that is difficult to achieve using Monte Carlo method. The coupling between localized magnetic moments and itinerant electrons presents a plethora of interesting physics. The low-energy physics of some quantum impurity systems can be described using conformal field theory (CFT). In this paper, the connection between quantum impurity models and CFT is further strengthened as we construct a class of exactly solvable models with ground states given by CFT correlators. The method developed here is completely analytical and can be applied to fermions with an arbitrary number of colors and multiple impurities. The quantized thermal Hall effect is an important probe for detecting chiral topological order and revealing the nature of chiral gapless edge states. The standard Kubo formula approach for the thermal Hall conductance $\kappa_{xy}$ based on the linear-response theory faces difficulties in practical application due to the lack of a reliable numerical method for calculating dynamical quantities in microscopic models at finite temperature. In this work, we propose an approach for calculating $\kappa_{xy}$ in two-dimensional lattice models displaying chiral topological order. Our approach targets at the edge current localized at the boundary which involves only thermal averages of local operators in equilibrium, thus drastically lowering the barrier for the calculation of $\kappa_{xy}$. We use the chiral $p$-wave superconductor (with and without disorder) and the Hofstadter model as benchmark examples to illustrate several sources of finite-size effects, and we suggest the infinite (or sufficiently long) strip as the best geometry for carrying out numerical simulations., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, published version

We propose and study an SU(3) trimer resonating-valence-bond (tRVB) state with $C_{4v}$ point-group symmetry on the square lattice. By devising a projected entangled-pair state representation, we show that all (connected) correlation functions between local operators in this SU(3) tRVB state decay exponentially, indicating its gapped nature. We further calculate the modular $S$ and $T$ matrices by constructing all nine topological sectors on a torus and establish the existence of $\mathbb{Z}_3$ topological order in this SU(3) tRVB state., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

We extend the scope of the Klein bottle entropy, originally introduced by [Tu, Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 261603 (2017)] in the rational conformal field theory (CFT), to the compactified boson CFT, which are relevant to the studies of Luttinger liquids. We first review the Klein bottle entropy in rational CFT and discuss details of how to extract the Klein bottle entropy from lattice models using the example of the transverse field Ising model. We then go beyond the scope of rational CFT and study the Klein bottle entropy $\ln g$ in the compactified boson CFT, which turns out to have a straightforward relation to the compactification radius $R$, $\ln g = \ln R$. This relation indicates a convenient and efficient method to extract the Luttinger parameter from lattice model calculations. Our numerical results on the Klein bottle entropy in the spin-$1/2$ XXZ chain show excellent agreement with the CFT predictions, up to some small deviations near the isotropic point, which we attribute to the marginally irrelevant terms. For the $S = 1$ XXZ chain that cannot be exactly solved, our numerical results provide an accurate numerical determination of the Luttinger parameter in this model., Comment: 18 pages, 6 figures, published version
