Search

We present DOHA, a new algorithm for cotrending photometric light curves obtained by transiting exoplanet surveys. The algorithm employs a novel approach to the traditional "differential photometry" technique, by selecting the most suitable comparison star for each target light curve, using a two-step correlation search. Extensive tests on real data reveal that DOHA corrects both intra-night variations and long-term systematics affecting the data. Statistical studies conducted on a sample of 9500 light curves from the Qatar Exoplanet Survey reveal that DOHA-corrected light curves show an RMS improvement of a factor of 2, compared to the raw light curves. In addition, we show that the transit detection probability in our sample can increase considerably, even up to a factor of 7, after applying DOHA.

We carry out high-resolution FUSE spectroscopy of the nuclear region of NGC 1068. The first set of spectra was obtained with a 30" square aperture that collects all emission from the narrow-line region. The data reveal a strong broad OVI component of FWHM ~3500 kms-1 and two narrow OVI 1031/1037 components of ~350 kms-1. The CIII 977 and NIII 991 emission lines in this spectrum can be fitted with a narrow component of FWHM ~1000 kms-1 and a broad one of ~2500 kms-1. Another set of seven spatially resolved spectra were made using a long slit of 1.25" X 20", at steps of ~1" along the axis of the emission-line cone. We find that (1) Major emission lines in the FUSE wavelength range consist of a broad and a narrow component; (2) There is a gradient in the velocity field for the narrow OVI component of ~200 kms-1 from ~2" southwest of the nucleus to ~4" northeast. A similar pattern is also observed with the broad OVI component, with a gradient of ~3000 kms-1. These are consistent with the HST/STIS findings and suggest a biconical structure in which the velocity field is mainly radial outflow; (3) A major portion of the CIII and NIII line flux is produced in the compact core. They are therefore not effective temperature diagnostics for the conical region; and (4) The best-fitted UV continuum suggests virtually no reddening, and the HeII 1085/1640 ratio suggests a consistently low extinction factor across the cone., Comment: To appear in the Astrophysical Journal. 37 pages with 12 figures

We present complimentary techniques to find emission-line targets and measure their properties in a semi-automated fashion from grism observations obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. The first technique is to find all likely sources in a direct image, extract their spectra and search them for emission lines. The second method is to look for emission-line sources as compact structures in an unsharp masked version of the grism image. Using these methods we identify 46 emission-line targets in the Hubble Deep Field North using a modest (3 orbit) expenditure of HST observing time. Grism spectroscopy is a powerful tool for efficiently identifying interesting low luminosity, moderate redshift emission-line field galaxies. The sources found here have a median i band flux 1.5 mag fainter than the spectroscopic redshift catalog of Cohen et al. They have redshift z <= 1.42, high equivalent widths (typically EW > 100{\AA}), and are usually less luminous than the characteristic luminosity at the same redshift. The chief obstacle in interpreting the results is line identification, since the majority of sources have a single emission line and the spectral resolution is low. Photometric redshifts are useful for providing a first guess redshift. However, even at the depth of the state-of-the-art data used here, photometric errors can result in uncertainties in line identifications, especially for sources with i > ~24.5 ABmag. Reliable line identification for the faintest emission-line galaxies requires additional ground-based spectroscopy for confirmation. Of particular concern are the faint high EW [OII] emitters which could represent a strongly evolving galaxy population if the possibility that they are mis-identified lower redshift interlopers can be ruled out. (Abridged.) We present F435W (B), F606W (Broad V), and F814W (Broad I) coronagraphic images of the debris disk around Beta Pictoris obtained with HST's Advanced Camera for Surveys. We confirm that the previously reported warp in the inner disk is a distinct secondary disk inclined by ~5 deg from the main disk. The main disk's northeast extension is linear from 80 to 250 AU, but the southwest extension is distinctly bowed with an amplitude of ~1 AU over the same region. Both extensions of the secondary disk appear linear, but not collinear, from 80 to 150 AU. Within ~120 AU of the star, the main disk is ~50% thinner than previously reported. The surface-brightness profiles along the spine of the main disk are fitted with four distinct radial power laws between 40 and 250 AU, while those of the secondary disk between 80 and 150 AU are fitted with single power laws. These discrepancies suggest that the two disks have different grain compositions or size distributions. The F606W/F435W and F814W/F435W flux ratios of the composite disk are nonuniform and asymmetric about both projected axes of the disk. Within ~120 AU, the m_F435W-m_F606W and m_F435W-m_F814W colors along the spine of the main disk are ~10% and ~20% redder, respectively, than those of Beta Pic. These colors increasingly redden beyond ~120 AU, becoming 25% and 40% redder, respectively, than the star at 250 AU. We compare the observed red colors within ~120 AU with the simulated colors of non-icy grains having a radial number density ~r^-3 and different compositions, porosities, and minimum grain sizes. The observed colors are consistent with those of compact or moderately porous grains of astronomical silicate and/or graphite with sizes >0.15-0.20 um, but the colors are inconsistent with the blue colors expected from grains with porosities >90%., Comment: 38 pages (including 21 figures and 4 tables) in EmulateApJ format, accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journal. We present deep HST/ACS observations in g,r,i,z towards the z=4.1 radio galaxy TN J1338-1942 and its overdensity of >30 spectroscopically confirmed Lya emitters (LAEs). We select 66 g-band dropouts to z=27, 6 of which are also a LAE. Although our color-color selection results in a relatively broad redshift range centered on z=4.1, the field of TN J1338-1942 is richer than the average field at the >5 sigma significance, based on a comparison with GOODS. The angular distribution is filamentary with about half of the objects clustered near the radio galaxy, and a small, excess signal (2 sigma) in the projected pair counts at separations of <10" is interpreted as being due to physical pairs. The LAEs are young (a few x 10^7 yr), small ( = 0.13") galaxies, and we derive a mean stellar mass of ~10^8-9 Msun based on a stacked K-band image. We determine star formation rates, sizes, morphologies, and color-magnitude relations of the g-dropouts and find no evidence for a difference between galaxies near TN J1338-1942 and in the field. We conclude that environmental trends as observed in clusters at much lower redshift are either not yet present, or are washed out by the relatively broad selection in redshift. A five square arcminute region around the luminous radio-loud quasar SDSS J0836+0054 (z=5.8) hosts a wealth of associated galaxies, characterized by very red (1.3 < i_775 - z_{850} < 2.0) color. The surface density of these z~5.8 candidates is approximately six times higher than the number expected from deep ACS fields. This is one of the highest galaxy overdensities at high redshifts, which may develop into a group or cluster. We also find evidence for a substructure associated with one of the candidates. It has two very faint companion objects within two arcseconds, which are likely to merge. The finding supports the results of a recent simulation that luminous quasars at high redshifts lie on the most prominent dark-matter filaments and are surrounded by many fainter galaxies. We present the results of the pilot observations of the Deep Extragalactic VLBI-Optical Survey (DEVOS). Our ultimate aim is to collect information on compact structures in a large sample of extragalactic radio sources (~10000 objects) up to two orders of magnitude fainter than those studied in typical imaging Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) surveys up until now. This would lead to an unprecedented data base for various astrophysical, astrometric and cosmological studies. The first global VLBI observations of the DEVOS programme were successfully conducted in May 2002. We selected sources without any spectral criterion from the Very Large Array (VLA) Faint Images of the Radio Sky at Twenty-centimeters (FIRST) catalogue, that are also detected with the Multi-Element Radio Linked Interferometer Network (MERLIN). The DEVOS pilot sample sources are in the area of the sky that is covered by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We describe the sample selection and present high resolution 5-GHz radio images of the sources. We investigate the central regions of 23 spiral galaxies using archival NICMOS imaging and STIS spectroscopy. The sample is taken from our program to determine the masses of central massive black holes (MBH) in 54 nearby spiral galaxies. Stars are likely to contribute significantly to any dynamical central mass concentration that we find in our MBH program and this paper is part of a series to investigate the nuclear properties of these galaxies. We use the Nuker law to fit surface brightness profiles, derived from the NICMOS images, to look for nuclear star clusters and find possible extended sources in 3 of the 23 galaxies studied (13 per cent). The fact that this fraction is lower than that inferred from optical Hubble Space Telescope studies is probably due to the greater spatial resolution of those studies. Using R-H and J-H colors and equivalent widths of H-alpha emission (from the STIS spectra) we investigate the nature of the stellar population with evolutionary models. Under the assumption of hot stars ionizing the gas, as opposed to a weak AGN, we find that there are young stellar populations (~10-20 Myr) however these data do not allow us to determine what percentage of the total nuclear stellar population they form. Also, in an attempt to find any unknown AGN we use [N II] and [S II] line flux ratios (relative to H-alpha) and find tentative evidence for weak AGN in NGC 1300 and NGC 4536., Comment: 23 pages, 8 figures. We study the dynamical origin of the structures observed in the scattered-light images of the resolved debris disk around HD 141569A. We explore the roles of radiation pressure from the central star, gas drag from the gas disk, and the tidal forces from two nearby stars in creating and maintaining these structures. We use a simple one-dimensional axisymmetric model to show that the presence of the gas helps confine the dust and that a broad ring of dust is produced if a central hole exists in the disk. This model also suggests that the disk is in a transient, excited dynamical state, as the observed dust creation rate applied over the age of the star is inconsistent with submillimeter mass measurements. We model in two dimensions the effects of a fly-by encounter between the disk and a binary star in a prograde, parabolic, coplanar orbit. We track the spatial distribution of the disk's gas, planetesimals, and dust. We conclude that the surface density distribution reflects the planetesimal distribution for a wide range of parameters. Our most viable model features a disk of initial radius 400 AU, a gas mass of 50 M_earth, and beta = 4 and suggests that the system is being observed within 4000 yr of the fly-by periastron. The model reproduces some features of HD 141569A's disk, such as a broad single ring and large spiral arms, but it does not reproduce the observed multiple spiral rings or disk asymmetries nor the observed clearing in the inner disk. We present Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph emission-line spectra of the central regions of the spiral galaxies NGC 1300 and NGC 2748. From the derived kinematics of the nuclear gas we have found evidence for central supermassive black holes in both galaxies. The estimated mass of the black hole in NGC 1300 is 6.6 (+6.3, -3.2) x 10^7 solar masses and in NGC 2748 is 4.4 (+3.5, -3.6) x 10^7 solar masses (both at the 95% confidence level). We present new H-alpha imaging of all known dwarf irregular companions to NGC 6946: UGC 11583, KK 251, KK 252, KKR 55, KKR 56, Cepheus 1, KKR 59, and KKR 60. The galaxies span a range of blue absolute magnitudes of [-13.6, -17.6], relative gas content of [0.1, 2.5] M_sun/L_sun, current star formation activity of [0.2, 5.2]10^-2 M_sun yr^-1, and timescale to exhaust the current gas supply of [6, 86] Gyr., Comment: 4 pages, 1 figure. accepted to Research Note in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We present new measurements of the galaxy luminosity function (LF) and its dependence on local galaxy density, color, morphology, and clustocentric radius for the massive z=0.83 cluster MS1054-0321. Our analyses are based on imaging performed with the ACS onboard the HST in the F606W, F775W and F850LP passbands and extensive spectroscopic data obtained with the Keck LRIS. Our main results are based on a spectroscopically selected sample of 143 cluster members with morphological classifications derived from the ACS observations. Our three primary findings are (1) the faint-end slope of the LF is steepest in the bluest filter, (2) the LF in the inner part of the cluster (or highest density regions) has a flatter faint-end slope, and (3) the fraction of early-type galaxies is higher at the bright end of the LF, and gradually decreases toward fainter magnitudes. These characteristics are consistent with those in local galaxy clusters, indicating that, at least in massive clusters, the common characteristics of cluster LFs are established at z=0.83. We also find a 2sigma deficit of intrinsically faint, red galaxies (i-z>0.5, Mi>-19) in this cluster. This trend may suggest that faint, red galaxies (which are common in z<0.1 rich clusters) have not yet been created in this cluster at z=0.83. The giant-to-dwarf ratio in MS1054-0321 starts to increase inwards of the virial radius or when Sigma>30 Mpc^-2, coinciding with the environment where the galaxy star formation rate and the morphology-density relation start to appear. We present $V$ and $I$ continuum images and H$\alpha$+[N II] maps of nine early-type galaxies observed with the Wide Field Channel of the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope. Dust and ionized gas are detected in all galaxies. The optical nebulae are primarily concentrated on the nuclei and extend out to radii of a few hundred parsecs, in compact clumps, filaments, or disks. Two galaxies, NGC 6166 and NGC 6338, also possess diffuse, ionized filaments on kiloparsec scales. The ionized gas is entirely contained within the nuclear disks of ESO 208-G021, NGC 3078, and NGC 7720. In the radio-loud galaxy NGC 6166, emission-line filaments are detected along the radio lobes, possibly as a result of shock ionization. A wide range of ionized gas masses, $M_g\approx7\times10^2-3\times10^6$ $M_\odot$, are calculated from the observed fluxes. We present surface photometry for the central regions of a sample of 48 spiral galaxies (mostly unbarred and barred of types Sbc or Sc) observed with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on board the Hubble Space Telescope. Surface brightness profiles were derived and modeled with a Nuker law. We also analyzed archival Wide Field Planetary Camera~2 images with a larger field of view, available for 18 galaxies in our sample. We modeled the extracted bulge surface brightness profiles with an exponential, a de Vaucouleurs or a Sersic profile. In agreement with previous studies, we find that bulges of Sbc galaxies fall into two categories: bulges well described by an exponential profile and those well described by an de Vaucouleurs profile. Only one galaxy requires the use of a more general Sersic profile to properly describe the bulge. Nuclear photometrically distinct components are found in ~55% of the galaxies. For those that we classify as star clusters based on their resolved extent we find absolute magnitudes that are brighter on average than those previously identified in spiral galaxies. This might be due to a bias in our sample toward star forming galaxies, combined with a trend for star forming galaxies to host brighter central clusters., Comment: 33 pages, 7 figures. We measure the luminosity function of morphologically selected E/S0 galaxies from $z=0.5$ to $z=1.0$ using deep high resolution Advanced Camera for Surveys imaging data. Our analysis covers an area of $48\Box\arcmin$ (8$\times$ the area of the HDF-N) and extends 2 magnitudes deeper ($I\sim24$ mag) than was possible in the Deep Groth Strip Survey (DGSS). At $0.51.7$, E/S0 galaxies at brighter luminosities ($M_B<-20.1$), but are increasingly different at fainter magnitudes where `blue' galaxies are both smaller and have lower Sersic parameters. Fits of the colors to stellar population models suggest that most E/S0 galaxies have short star-formation time scales ($\tau<1$ Gyr), and that galaxies have formed at an increasing rate from $z\sim8$ until $z\sim2$ after which there has been a gradual decline., Comment: 39 pages, 21 figures, accepted in AJ

The properties of Ultra Compact Dwarf (UCD) galaxy candidates in Abell 1689 (z=0.183) are investigated, based on deep high resolution ACS images. A UCD candidate has to be unresolved, have i<28 (M_V<-11.5) mag and satisfy color limits derived from Bayesian photometric redshifts. We find 160 UCD candidates with 2226.8 mag, the radial and luminosity distribution of the UCD candidates can be explained well by Abell 1689's globular cluster (GC) system. For i<26.8 mag, there is an overpopulation of 15 +/- 5 UCD candidates with respect to the GC luminosity function. For i<26 mag, the radial distribution of UCD candidates is more consistent with the dwarf galaxy population than with the GC system of Abell 1689. The UCD candidates follow a color-magnitude trend with a slope similar to that of Abell 1689's genuine dwarf galaxy population, but shifted fainter by about 2-3 mag. Two of the three brightest UCD candidates (M_V ~ -17 mag) are slightly resolved. At the distance of Abell 1689, these two objects would have King-profile core radii of ~35 pc and r_eff ~300 pc, implying luminosities and sizes 2-3 times those of M32's bulge. Additional photometric redshifts obtained with late type stellar and elliptical galaxy templates support the assignment of these two resolved sources to Abell 1689. Our findings imply that in Abell 1689 there are at least 10 UCDs with M_V<-12.7 mag. Compared to the UCDs in the Fornax cluster they are brighter, larger and have colors closer to normal dwarf galaxies. This suggests that they may be in an intermediate stage of the stripping process. (Abridged) We study the internal color properties of a morphologically selected sample of spheroidal galaxies taken from HST/ACS ERO program of UGC 10214 (``The Tadpole''). By taking advantage of the unprecedented high resolution of the ACS in this very deep dataset we are able to characterize spheroids at sub-arcseconds scales. Using the V_606W and I_814W bands, we construct V-I color maps and extract color gradients for a sample of spheroids at I_814W < 24 mag. We investigate the existence of a population of morphologically classified spheroids which show extreme variation in their internal color properties similar to the ones reported in the HDFs. These are displayed as blue cores and inverse color gradients with respect to those accounted from metallicity variations. Following the same analysis we find a similar fraction of early-type systems (~30%-40%) that show non-homologous internal colors, suggestive of recent star formation activity. We present two statistics to quantify the internal color variation in galaxies and for tracing blue cores, from which we estimate the fraction of non-homogeneous to homogeneous internal colors as a function of redshift up to z<1.2. We find that it can be described as about constant as a function of redshift, with a small increase with redshift for the fraction of spheroids that present strong color dispersions. The implications of a constant fraction at all redshifts suggests the existence of a relatively permanent population of evolving spheroids up to z~1. We present deep unbiased spectroscopy of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (UDF) carried out using the slitless grism spectroscopy mode of the Advance Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The GRIsm ACS Program for Extragalactic Science (GRAPES) achieves continuum detection as faint as $z_{AB}=27.2$ using 40 orbits ($9.2 \times 10^4$ seconds) on HST. The data were taken at four orientation angles to correct for the overlap of spectra. GRAPES data provide a unique, uninterrupted, low resolution (R=100) spectral coverage for $5500\AA < \lambda < 10500\AA$, and allow us to detect high redshift galaxies at $4 < z < 7$ whether they have $\lya$ lines or just show the Lyman Break, as well as find low luminosity AGNs in an unbiased fashion. This paper describes in detail the observations and the data reduction, and examines the quality of the extracted spectra. Subsequent papers will deal with the analysis of the data. We have compiled L' and M' photometry of 63 single and binary M, L,and T dwarfs obtained at UKIRT using the MKO filter set. This compilation includes new L' data for 8 L dwarfs and 13 T dwarfs and new M' data for 7 L dwarfs, 5 T dwarfs, and Gl 229A. We compute L_bol, BC_K, and T_eff for 42 dwarfs whose flux-calibrated JHK spectra, L' photometry, and trigonometric parallaxes are available, and we estimate these quantities for 9 other dwarfs whose parallaxes and flux-calibrated spectra have been obtained. BC_K is a well-behaved function of near-IR spectral type with a dispersion of ~0.1 mag for types M6-T5; it is significantly more scattered for types T5-T9. T_eff declines steeply and monotonically for types M6-L7 and T4-T9, but is nearly constant at ~1450 K for types L7-T4 with assumed ages of ~3 Gyr. This constant T_eff is evidenced by nearly unchanging values of L'-M' between types L6 and T3. We compare the observed K, L', and M' luminosities of L and T dwarfs in our sample with those predicted by model atmospheres with varying surface gravities and sedimentation efficiencies. The models indicate that the L3-T4.5 dwarfs generally have higher gravities (log g = 5.0-5.5) than the T6-T9 dwarfs (log g = 4.5-5.0). The predicted M' luminosities of T dwarfs are 1.5-2.5 times larger than those derived empirically for the T dwarfs in our sample. This discrepancy is attributed to absorption at 4.5-4.9 um by CO, which is not expected under the condition of chemical equilibrium assumed in the models. We determine that the L3 dwarf Kelu-1 and the T0 dwarf SDSS J0423-0414 are probable binary systems. We compute log(L_bol/L_sun) = -5.73 +/- 0.05 and T_eff = 600-750 K for the T9 dwarf 2MASS J0415-0935, which supplants Gl 570D as the least luminous and coolest brown dwarf presently known., Comment: 50 pages, including 10 figures and 6 tables, to be published in June 2004 issue of The Astronomical Journal. We have discovered three globular clusters beyond the Holmberg radius in Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys images of the gas-rich dark matter dominated blue compact dwarf galaxy NGC2915. The clusters, all of which start to resolve into stars, have M_{V606} = -8.9 to -9.8 mag, significantly brighter than the peak of the luminosity function of Milky Way globular clusters. Their colors suggest a metallicity [Fe/H] ~ -1.9 dex, typical of metal-poor Galactic globular clusters. The specific frequency of clusters is at a minimum normal, compared to spiral galaxies. However, since only a small portion of the system has been surveyed it is more likely that the luminosity and mass normalized cluster content is higher, like that seen in elliptical galaxies and galaxy clusters. This suggests that NGC2915 resembles a key phase in the early hierarchical assembly of galaxies - the epoch when much of the old stellar population has formed, but little of the stellar disk. Depending on the subsequent interaction history, such systems could go on to build-up larger elliptical galaxies, evolve into normal spirals, or in rare circumstances remain suspended in their development to become systems like NGC2915., Comment: ApJ Letters accepted; 6 pages, 2 figures, 3 tables

We report early results on galaxies at z~6, selected from Hubble Space Telescope imaging for the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey. Spectroscopy of one object with the Advanced Camera for Surveys grism and from the Keck and VLT observatories a shows a strong continuum break and asymmetric line emission, identified as Lya at z=5.83. We detect only five spatially extended, z~6 candidates with signal-to-noise ratios > 10, two of which have spectroscopic confirmation. This is many fewer than would be expected if galaxies at z=6 had the same luminosity function as those at z=3. There are many fainter candidates, but we expect substantial contamination from foreground interlopers and spurious detections. Our best estimates favor a z=6 galaxy population with fainter luminosities, higher space density, and similar co-moving ultraviolet emissivity to that at z=3, but this depends critically on counts at fluxes fainter than those reliably probed by the current data., Comment: Submitted to ApJ Letters for the GOODS special issue. We present the analysis of the faint galaxy population in the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) Early Release Observation fields VV 29 (UGC 10214) and NGC 4676. Here we attempt to thoroughly consider all aspects relevant for faint galaxy counting and photometry, developing methods which are based on public software and that are easily reproducible by other astronomers. Using simulations we determine the best SExtractor parameters for the detection of faint galaxies in deep HST observations, paying special attention to the issue of deblending, which significantly affects the normalization and shape of the number count distribution. We confirm, as claimed by Bernstein, Freedman and Madore (2002), that Kron-like magnitudes, such as the ones generated by SExtractor, can miss more than half of the light of faint galaxies, what dramatically affects the slope of the number counts. We present catalogs for the VV 29 and NGC 4676 fields with photometry in the g,V and I bands. We also show that combining the bayesian software BPZ with superb ACS data and new spectral templates enables us to estimate reliable photometric redshifts for a significant fraction of galaxies with as few as three filters. After correcting for selection effects, we measure slopes of 0.32+- 0.01 for 22 < g < 28, 0.34+-0.01 for 22< V <27.5 and 0.33+-0.01 for 22 < I < 27. The counts do not flatten (except perhaps in the g-band), up to the depth of our observations. We find that the faint counts m_{AB}> 25.5 can be well approximated in all our filters by a passive luminosity evolution model based on the COMBO-17 luminosity function (\alpha=-1.5), with a strong merging rate following the prescription of Glazebrook et al. Using an i-z dropout criterion, we determine the space density of z~6 galaxies from two deep ACS GTO fields with deep optical-IR imaging. A total of 23 objects are found over 46 arcmin^2, or ~0.5 objects/arcmin^2 down to z~27.3 (6 sigma; all AB mag) (including one probable z~6 AGN). Combining deep ISAAC data for our RDCS1252-2927 field (J~25.7 and Ks~25.0 (5 sigma)) and NICMOS data for the HDF North (JH~27.3 (5 sigma)), we verify that these dropouts have flat spectral slopes. i-dropouts in our sample range in luminosity from ~1.5 L* (z~25.6) to ~0.3 L* (z~27.3) with the exception of one very bright candidate at z~24.2. The half-light radii vary from 0.09" to 0.29", or 0.5 kpc to 1.7 kpc. We derive the z~6 rest-frame UV luminosity density using three different procedures, each utilizing simulations based on a CDF South V dropout sample. First, we compare our findings with a no-evolution projection of this V-dropout sample. We find 23+/-25% more i-dropouts than we predict. Adopting previous results to z~5, this works out to a 20+/-29% drop in the luminosity density from z~3 to z~6. Second, we use these same V-dropout simulations to derive a selection function for our i-dropout sample and compute the UV-luminosity density (7.2+/-2.5 x 10^25 ergs/s/Hz/Mpc^3 down to z~27). We find a 39+/-21% drop over the same redshift range. This is our preferred value and suggests a star formation rate of 0.0090+/-0.0031 M_sol/yr/Mpc^3 to z~27, or ~0.036+/- 0.012 M_sol/yr/Mpc^3 extrapolating the LF to the faint limit. Third, we follow a very similar procedure, but assume no incompleteness, finding a luminosity density which is ~2-3X lower. This final estimate constitutes a lower limit. All three estimates are within the canonical range of luminosity densities necessary for reionization of the universe at this epoch. Multicolor coronagraphic images of the circumstellar disk around HD141569A have been obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys. B, V, and I images show that the disk's previously-described multiple-ring structure is actually a continuous distribution of dust with a tightly-wound spiral structure. Two, more open spiral arms extend from the disk, one of which appears to reach the nearby binary star HD141569BC. Diffuse dust is seen up to 1200AU from HD141569A. Although planets may exist in the inner region of the disk, tidal interaction with HD141569BC seems more likely to be the cause of these phenomena. The disk appears redder than the star (B-V = 0.21 and V-I = 0.25), and its color is spatially uniform. A scattering asymmetry factor of g = 0.25-0.35 is derived. We present HST/STIS spectra of the Sbc spiral galaxy NGC 4041 which were used to map the velocity field of the gas in its nuclear region. We detect the presence of a compact (r~0.4" ~40 pc), high surface brightness, rotating nuclear disk co-spatial with a nuclear star cluster. The disk is characterized by a rotation curve with a peak to peak amplitude of ~40 km/s and is systematically blueshifted by 10 - 20 km/s with respect to the galaxy systemic velocity. With the standard assumption of constant mass-to-light ratio and with the nuclear disk inclination taken from the outer disk, we find that a dark point mass of 1(-0.7;+0.6) 10^7 Msun is needed to reproduce the observed rotation curve. However the observed blueshift suggests the possibility that the nuclear disk could be dynamically decoupled. Following this line of reasoning we relax the standard assumptions and find that the kinematical data can be accounted for by the stellar mass provided that either the central mass-to-light ratio is increased by a factor of ~2 or that the inclination is allowed to vary. This model results in a 3 sigma upper limit of 6 10^6 Msun on the mass of any nuclear black hole. Overall, our analysis only allows us to set an upper limit of 2 10^7 Msun on the mass of the nuclear black hole. If this upper limit is taken in conjunction with an estimated bulge B magnitude of -17.7 and with a central stellar velocity dispersion of 95 km/s, then these results are not inconsistent with both the MBH-Lsph and the MBH-sigma correlations. Constraints on black hole masses in spiral galaxies of types as late as Sbc are still very scarce and therefore the present result adds an important new datapoint to our understanding of black hole demography., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We present the first Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) observations of young star clusters in the colliding/merging galaxy UGC 10214. The observations were made as part of the Early Release Observation (ERO) program for the newly installed ACS during service mission SM3B for the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Many young star clusters can be identified in the tails of UGC 10214, with ages ranging from ~3 Myr to 10 Myr. The extreme blue V-I (F606W-F814W) colors of the star clusters found in the tail of UGC 10214 can only be explained if strong emission lines are included with a young stellar population. This has been confirmed by our Keck spectroscopy of some of these bright blue stellar knots. The most luminous and largest of these blue knots has an absolute magnitude of M_V = -14.45, with a half-light radius of 161 pc, and if it is a single star cluster, would qualify as a super star cluster (SSC). Alternatively, it could be a superposition of multiple scaled OB associations or clusters. With an estimated age of ~ 4-5 Myr, its derived mass is < 1.3 x 10^6 solar masses. Thus the young stellar knot is unbound and will not evolve into a normal globular cluster. The bright blue clusters and associations are much younger than the dynamical age of the tail, providing strong evidence that star formation occurs in the tail long after it was ejected. The Sloan Digital Sky Survey has discovered a population of broad absorption line quasars with various extreme properties. Many show absorption from metastable states of FeII with varying excitations; several objects are almost completely absorbed bluewards of MgII; at least one shows stronger absorption from FeIII than FeII, indicating temperatures T>35000 K in the absorbing region; and one object even seems to have broad H-beta absorption. Many of these extreme BALs are also heavily reddened, though `normal' BALs (particularly LoBALs) from SDSS also show evidence for internal reddening., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures. We examine the dust properties of a nearby distance-limited sample of early type galaxies using the WFPC2 of the Hubble Space Telescope. Dust is detected in 29 out of 67 galaxies (43%), including 12 with small nuclear dusty disks. In a separate sample of 40 galaxies biased for the detection of dust by virtue of their detection in the IRAS 100 micron band, dust is found in ~78% of the galaxies, 15 of which contain dusty disks. In those galaxies with detectable dust, the apparent mass of the dust correlates with radio and far infrared luminosity, becoming more significant for systems with filamentary dust. A majority of IRAS and radio detections are also associated with dusty galaxies rather than dustless galaxies. This indicates that thermal emission from clumpy, filamentary dust is the main source of the far-IR radiation in early type galaxies. Dust in small disk-like morphology tends to be well aligned with the major axis of the host galaxies, while filamentary dust appears to be more randomly distributed with no preference for alignment with any major galactic structure. This suggests that, if the dusty disks and filaments have a common origin, the dust originates externally and requires time to dynamically relax and settle in the galaxy potential in the form of compact disks. More galaxies with visible dust than without dust display emission lines, indicative of ionized gas, although such nuclear activity does not show a preference for dusty disk over filamentary dust. There appears to be a weak relationship between the mass of the dusty disks and central velocity dispersion of the galaxy, suggesting a connection with a similar recently recognized relationship between the latter and the black hole mass., Comment: 17 pages, including 10 figures & 7 tables, to be published in the Astronomical Journal

We describe an on-going HST program aimed at determining the relationship between the nuclear black hole mass and bulge mass in spiral galaxies. We have selected a volume limited sample of 54 nearby spiral galaxies for which we already have ground based emission line rotation curves, CCD surface photometry and radio maps. We are now obtaining HST/STIS longslit observations of each of the galaxies in the sample in order to determine the nuclear Halpha rotation curve at high (~0.1") spatial resolution. We will use these data to measure the unresolved dark mass concentration at the nucleus of each object. We have obtained HST NICMOS snapshot images of ten BALQSOs and four radio-quiet non-BALQSOs to search for extended narrow-line regions. For each object we obtained an image in the F160W filter and a narrow-band image in either H-alpha, H-beta, or [O ii]. We find no detections of extended narrow-line emission in the sample. We generate simulated images of QSOs with extended narrow-line regions to place limits on the amount of flux that may be present, and we conclude that BALQSOs cannot be more than several times brighter in extended emission than typical type 2 AGN. Spatially unresolved H-alpha emission is detected in all nine objects observed in this line, which we attribute to broad H-alpha emission. The five detected BALQSOs have derived H-alpha equivalent widths that are larger than those of the four non-BALQSOs by a factor of around 2 on average. We report -as a part of a long-term study of mergers and IR QSOs- detailed spectroscopic evidences for outflow (OF) and/or Wolf Rayet features in: (i) low velocity OF in the ongoing mergers NGC 4038/39 and IRAS 23128-5919; (ii) extreme velocity OF (EVOF) in the QSOs IRAS 01003-2238 and IRAS 13218+0552; (iii) OF and EVOF in a complete sample of ultra-luminous IR galaxies/QSOs ("The IRAS 1 Jy MKO-KPNO Survey", of 118 objects). We found EVOF in IRAS 11119+3257, 14394+5332, 15130+1958 and 15462-0450. The OF components detected in these objects were mainly associated to starburst processes: i.e., to galactic-winds generated in multiple type II SN explosions and massive stars. The EVOF were detected in objects with strong starburst plus obscured IR QSOs; which suggest that interaction of both processes could generate EVOF. In addition, we analyze the presence of Wolf Rayet features in the large sample of Bright PG-QSOs (Boroson and Green 1992), and nearby mergers and galactic-wind galaxies. We found clear WR features in the Fe II QSOs (type I): PG 1244+026, 1444+407, 1448+273, 1535+547; and in the IR merger Arp 220. HST archive images of IR+BAL QSOs show in practically all of these objects "arc or shell" features probably associated to galactic-winds (i.e., to multiple type II SN explosions) and/or merger processes. Finally, we discuss the presence of extreme starburst and galactic wind as a possible evolutive link between IR merger and IR QSOs; where the relation between mergers and extreme starburst (with powerful galactic-winds) plays in important role, in the evolution of galaxies., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

We report the discovery of five quasars with redshifts of 4.67 - 5.27 and z'-band magnitudes of 19.5-20.7 M_B ~ -27. All were originally selected as distant quasar candidates in optical/near-infrared photometry from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), and most were confirmed as probable high-redshift quasars by supplementing the SDSS data with J and K measurements. The quasars possess strong, broad Lyman-alpha emission lines, with the characteristic sharp cutoff on the blue side produced by Lyman-alpha forest absorption. Three quasars contain strong, broad absorption features, and one of them exhibits very strong N V emission. The amount of absorption produced by the Lyman-alpha forest increases toward higher redshift, and that in the z=5.27 object (D_A ~ 0.7) is consistent with a smooth extrapolation of the absorption seen in lower redshift quasars. The high luminosity of these objects relative to most other known objects at z >~ 5 makes them potentially valuable as probes of early quasar properties and of the intervening intergalactic medium., Comment: 13 pages in LaTex format, two postscirpt figures. We present 21-cm HI line and 13-cm continuum observations, obtained with the Australian Long Baseline Array, of the Seyfert 2 galaxy IC 5063. This object appears to be one of the best examples of Seyfert galaxies where shocks produced by the radio plasma jet influence both the radio as well as the near-infrared emission. The picture resulting from the new observations of IC 5063 confirms and completes the one derived from previous Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) lower resolution observations. A strong interaction between the radio plasma ejected from the nucleus and a molecular cloud of the ISM is occurring at the position of the western hot spot, about 0.6 kpc from the active nucleus. Because of this interaction, the gas is swept up, forming, around the radio lobe, a cocoon-like structure where the gas is moving at high speed. Due to this, part of the molecular gas is dissociated and becomes neutral or even ionised if the UV continuum produced by the shocks is hard and powerful enough. The main component detected in the VLBI HI absorption profile has a central velocity of 2786 km/s and is therefore blue-shifted 614 km/s with respect to the systemic velocity. Its peak optical depth is 5.4 %. The corresponding column density of the detected absorption, for a spin temperature of 100 K, is N_HI ~ 2x10^21 atoms cm^-2. The HI absorption properties observed in IC 5063 appear different from those observed in other Seyfert galaxies, where the HI absorption detected is attributed to undisturbed foreground gas associated with the large-scale galaxy disk., Comment: To appear in May issue of AJ; LateX, 5 Postscript figures

We present radio observations for 29 southern Seyfert galaxies selected from a volume limited sample with cz<3600 km s^-1, and declination delta<0degr. Objects with declination -30degr

We have collected emission line ([Oiii] 5007 and Halpha+[Nii]) and radio continuum images for a volume limited (cz <= 3600 km/s) sample of southern Seyfert galaxies. The optical data were obtained at ESO using the 2.2 m, NTT and 3.6 m telescopes, and have a typical resolution of 1" and noise level of ~1e-16 ergs cm-2 s-1 arcsec-2. The radio continuum observations were obtained with the VLA (6 cm) and ATCA (3 cm) and have a resolution of ~1" matching that of the optical images. All, but one of the observed sources were detected above the noise limit of ~0.15 mJy. In the radio, 30% of the sources show linear structure, 25% are only slightly resolved or diffused, and 45% remain unresolved at the ~1" resolution. As in previous work, a correlation is found between the size of the radio structure and the radio power. The radio sources in Seyfert 2 galaxies have, on average, larger linear size than their type 1 counterparts, but there is no significant difference in radio power between types 1 and 2. No significant difference is found in the spectral indices of the two Seyfert types. Extended emission is common in Seyfert galaxies -- essentially all objects observed show extended Halpha+[Nii] and nearly 50% show extended [Oiii] emission. At least 40% (18 out of 50) of the galaxies show high excitation extended emission line region (EELR) well outlined in the excitation map. The EELR morphology vary from linear to conical to S-shaped and even X-shaped. Almost exclusively all elongated EELR are in Seyfert 2 galaxies. A deep, fuly sampled diffraction limited (FWHM ~ 70 mas) narrow-band image of the central region in M87 was obtained with the Wide Filed and Planetary Camera 2 of the Hubble Space Telescope using the dithering technique. The H-alpha+[NII] continuum subtracted image reveals a wealth of details in the gaseous disk structure described earlier by Ford et al. (1994). The disk morphology is dominated by a well defined three-arm spiral pattern. In addition, the major spiral arms contain a large number of small "arclets" covering a range of sizes (0.1-0.3 arcsec = 10-30 pc). The overall surface brightness profile inside a radius ~1.5" (100 pc) is well represented by a power-law I(mu) ~ mu^(-1.75), but when the central ~40 pc are excluded it can be equally well fit by an exponential disk. The major axis position angle remains constant at about PA_disk ~ 6 deg for the innermost ~1", implying the disk is oriented nearly perpendicular to the synchrotron jet (PA_jet ~ 291 deg). At larger radial distances the isophotes twist, reflecting the gas distribution in the filaments connecting to the disk outskirts. The ellipticity within the same radial range is e = 0.2-0.4, which implies an inclination angle of i~35 deg. Optical diagnostic diagrams are frequently ambiguous as a test of the photoionization or fast shock models of the narrow line regions of active galaxies. Here, we present a set of UV line ratio diagrams which can discriminate between pure shock and photoionization modes of excitation, and to some extent, also discriminate shocks with ionized precursors from photoionization. These diagrams use relatively bright emission lines and reddening insensitive ratios and provide a practical observational test for separating the excitation mechanisms of the narrow line regions of active galaxies. The most useful diagrams are those involving the various ionization stages of Carbon, [OIII]5007/H-beta vs. CIV 1550/ HeII 1640 and the purely UV ratio pair CII] 2326 / CIII] 1909 vs. CIV 1550 / CIII]909. Temperature sensitive FUV lines CIII 977 and NIII 991 also provide good discriminants. The nuclear spectrum of M87 covering the Ly_a-H_a wavelength range was obtained with the HST Faint Object Spectrograph (FOS) trough a 0.21 arcsec aperture. Contrary to some previous claims, a single power law (F(nu)~nu^(-a)) can not reproduce the observed continuum shape and at least a broken power law is require for a good fit (a = 1.75 and 1.41 shortward and longward of the break at ~4500 A). We detect a set of broad (FWHM ~ 400 km/s) absorption lines arising in the gas associated with M87. These are only lines from neutral and very low ionization species blueshifted by ~150 km/s relative to the M87 systemic velocity, indicating a net gas outflow and turbulence. The excitation sensitive emission line ratios suggest that shocks may be the dominant energy supplier. The nuclear source in M87 is significantly variable. From the FOS target acquisition data, we have established that the flux from the optical nucleus varies by a factor ~2 on time scales of ~2.5 months and by as much as 25% over 3 weeks, and remains unchanged (<2.5%) on time scales of ~1 day. These timescales limit the physical size of the emitting region to a few hundred gravitational radii. We observed the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4151 on eleven occasions at 1-2 day intervals using the Berkeley spectrometer during the ORFEUS-SPAS II mission in 1996 November. The mean spectrum covers 912-1220 A at ~0.3 A resolution with a total exposure of 15,658 seconds. The mean flux at 1000 A was 4.7e-13 erg/cm^2/s/A. We identify the neutral hydrogen absorption with a number of components that correspond to the velocity distribution of \ion{H}{1} seen in our own Galaxy as well as features identified in the CIV 1549 absorption profile by Weymann et al. The main component of neutral hydrogen in NGC 4151 has a total column density of log N_HI = 18.7 +/- 1.5 cm^{-2} for a Doppler parameter b=250 +/- 50 km/s, and it covers 84 +/- 6% of the source. This is consistent with previous results obtained with the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope. Other intrinsic far-UV absorption features are not resolved, but the CIII* 1176 absorption line has a significantly higher blueshift relative to NGC 4151 than the CIII 977 resonance line. This implies that the highest velocity region of the outflowing gas has the highest density. Variations in the equivalent width of the CIII* 1176 absorption line anticorrelate with continuum variations on timescales of days. For an ionization timescale <1 day, we set an upper limit of 25 pc on the distance of the absorbing gas from the central source. The OVI 1034 and HeII 1085 emission lines also vary on timescales of 1-2 days, but their response to the continuum variations is complex. After correcting spherical aberration in the Hubble Space Telescope in 1993, the central masses of galaxies can be measured with a resolution 5 to 10 times better than can be achieved at the best terrestrial sites. This improvement in resolution is decisive for detecting the gravitational signature of massive black holes in galaxy nuclei. The discovery of small (r ~ 100-200 pc) rotating gaseous and stellar disks in the centers of many early-type galaxies provides a new and efficient means for measuring the central potentials of galaxies. Concomitantly, VLBI observations of water masers in the nuclei of NGC 4258 and NGC 1068 revealed exquisite Keplerian rotation curves around massive black holes at radii as small as 0.1 pc. Recent terrestrial K-band measurements of the proper motions of stars in the cluster at the center of the Galaxy provide irrefutable evidence for a black hole with a mass of 2.7E+6 M_sun. At the time of this symposium, the presence of central massive black holes has been established in 12 galaxies. The evidence suggests that there are massive black holes in the centers of all AGNs and in most, if not all, nucleated galaxies. New radio continuum (8 GHz and 1.4 GHz) and HI 21 cm line observations of the Seyfert 2 galaxy IC 5063 (PKS 2048-572) were obtained with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). The 8 GHz image reveals a linear triple structure (~4'', 1.5 kpc) oriented perpendicular to the optical polarization position angle. It is aligned with the inner dust lane and shows strong morphological association with the narrow emission line region (NLR). At 21 cm, very broad (~700 km/s) HI absorption is observed against the strong continuum source. This absorption is almost entirely blueshifted, indicating a fast net outflow, but a faint and narrow redshifted component is also present. In IC 5063 we see clear evidence for strong shocks resulting from the radio plasma-ISM interaction in the central few kpc. However, the energy flux in the radio plasma is an order of magnitude smaller than the energy emitted in emission lines. Thus, shocks are unlikely to account solely for the global ionization of the emission line region, particularly at large distances. The HI emission outlines a warped disk associated with the system of dust lanes some ~2' (~38 kpc) in radius. The lack of kinematically disturbed gas outside the central few kpc, coupled with the disk warp and close morphological connection of the inner dust lanes and the large-scale ionized gas, support the idea that the gas at large radii is photoionized by the central region, while shadowing effects are important in defining its X-shaped morphology. We argue that the narrow line regions of Seyfert galaxies are powered by the transport of energy and momentum by the radio-emitting jets and consequently that the ratio of the radio power to jet energy flux is much smaller than is usually assumed for radio galaxies. This can be partially attributed to the smaller ages ($\sim 10^6 yrs$) of Seyferts compared to radio galaxies but one also requires that either the magnetic energy density is more than an order of magnitude below the equipartition value, or more likely, that the internal energy densities of Seyfert jets are dominated by thermal plasma. If Seyfert jets are initially dominated by relativistic plasma, then an analysis of the data on jets in five Seyfert galaxies shows that all but one of these would have mildly relativistic jet velocities near 100 pc in order to power the respective narrow-line regions. However, observations of jet-cloud interactions in the NLR provide additional information on jet velocities and composition via the momentum budget. Our analysis of a jet-cloud interaction in NGC 1068, implies a shocked jet pressure much larger than the minimum pressure of the radio knot, a velocity $\sim 0.06 c$ and a jet temperature $\sim 10^9 K$ implying mildly relativistic electrons but thermal protons. The jet mass flux at this point $\sim 0.5 M_\odot yr^{-1}$, is an order of magnitude higher than the mass accretion rate into the black hole, strongly indicating entrainment. The initial jet mass flux $\sim 0.02 M_\odot yr^{-1}$, comparable to the mass accretion rate and is consistent with the densities inferred for accretion disc coronae from high energy observations, together with an initially mildly relativistic velocity and an initial jet radius of order 10 gravitational radii., Comment: LaTeX2e, uses astrobib.sty, 4 postscript figures; submitted to ApJ

We observed a total of 13 low-redshift AGN with the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope (HUT) during the course of the Astro-1 and Astro-2 missions. Of these, 4 show intrinsic Lyman limit absorption---NGC 1068, NGC 4151, NGC 3516 and NGC 3227. All galaxies with optically thick Lyman limits have extended narrow-line regions with bi-polar morphologies. All AGN with no absorption are Seyfert 1's with compact NLR's. We observed the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 3516 twice during the flight of Astro-2 using the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope in March 1995. Simultaneous X-ray observations were performed with ASCA. Our far-ultraviolet spectra cover the spectral range 820-1840 A with a resolution of 2-4 A. No significant variations were found between the two observations. The total spectrum shows a red continuum, $f_\nu \sim \nu^{-1.89}$, with an observed flux of $\rm 2.2 \times 10^{-14}~erg~cm^{-2}~s^{-1}~\AA^{-1}$ at 1450 A, slightly above the historical mean. Intrinsic absorption in Lyman $\beta$ is visible as well as absorption from O~vi 1032,1038, N~v 1239,1243, Si~iv 1394,1403, and C~iv 1548,1551. The UV absorption lines are far weaker than is usual for NGC~3516, and also lie closer to the emission line redshift rather than showing the blueshift typical of these lines when they are strong. The neutral hydrogen absorption, however, is blueshifted by $400~\rm km~s^{-1}$ relative to the systemic velocity, and it is opaque at the Lyman limit. The sharpness of the cutoff indicates a low effective Doppler parameter, $b < \rm 20~km~s^{-1}$. For $b = \rm 10~km~s^{-1}$ the derived intrinsic column is $\rm 3.5 \times 10^{17}~cm^{-2}$. As in NGC~4151, a single warm absorber cannot produce the strong absorption visible over the wide range of observed ionization states. We obtained X-ray spectra of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC~3516 in March 1995 using ASCA. Simultaneous far-UV observations were obtained with HUT on the Astro-2 shuttle mission. The ASCA spectrum shows a lightly absorbed power law of energy index 0.78. The low energy absorbing column is significantly less than previously seen. Prominent O~vii and O~viii absorption edges are visible, but, consistent with the much lower total absorbing column, no Fe K absorption edge is detectable. A weak, narrow Fe~K$\alpha$ emission line from cold material is present as well as a broad Fe~K$\alpha$ line. These features are similar to those reported in other Seyfert 1 galaxies. A single warm absorber model provides only an imperfect description of the low energy absorption. In addition to a highly ionized absorber with ionization parameter $U = 1.66$ and a total column density of $1.4 \times 10^{22}~\rm cm^{-2}$, adding a lower ionization absorber with $U = 0.32$ and a total column of $6.9 \times 10^{21}~\rm cm^{-2}$ significantly improves the fit. The contribution of resonant line scattering to our warm absorber models limits the Doppler parameter to $< 160~\rm km~s^{-1}$ at 90\% confidence. Turbulence at the sound speed of the photoionized gas provides the best fit. None of the warm absorber models fit to the X-ray spectrum can match the observed equivalent widths of all the UV absorption lines. We have launched a search for large-scale ($\gapprox$1 kpc) minor-axis outflows in edge-on Seyfert galaxies in order to assess their frequency of occurrence and study their properties. Here we present optical continuum and \han2 line images and/or minor-axis long-slit spectra of 22 edge-on Seyfert galaxies. Six of these galaxies show at least one of the following: (i) bi-symmetric H$\alpha$ halos extending along the minor axis, (ii) bright emission-line complexes at distances $\gapprox$4 kpc (in projection) out of the disk, and (iii) double-peaked emission-line profiles from the gas along the minor-axis, suggesting that a wind-blown bubble is present. Our results indicate that $\gapprox$${{1}\over{4}}$ of Seyferts have good evidence for minor-axis galactic outflows. Kinetic luminosities of the galactic outflows in our sample Seyferts are $\sim$10$^{40}$$-$10$^{42}$ erg~s$^{-1}$, assuming all of the observed minor-axis emission is produced by the outflow. These values are, in general, $\sim$0.1 as large as those for well-studied cases of superwinds in starburst galaxies (Heckman, Armus \& Miley 1990). However, far-infrared luminosities of our sample Seyferts are also $\sim$0.1 as large.
