Abstract

We aim to develop an alignment monitor, which consists of a length measurement grid of absolute distance interferometers, where we adopt a ball lens both as a beam collimator and a reflector. Collimated beams by the ball lenses were evaluated to have clear 2-dimensional circular gaussian distributions with their diameters, divergence angles and maximum waist distances agreeing well with their estimated values. An interferometer, which adopts a ball lens both as a collimator and a reflector, were evaluated to have uniform sensitivities against distances from several 10 mm to around 1000 mm, and tolerances against the target offsets of more than ±0.5 mm for the direction perpendicular to the measurement direction. These results show that the ball lens can be adopted for our alignment monitor both as a collimator and a reflector.

Abstract

A destructive monitor to measure the longitudinal bunch width of a low-energy and low-intensity muon beam was developed. This bunch-width monitor (BWM) employed microchannel plates to detect a single muon with high time resolution. In addition, constant-fraction discriminators were adopted to suppress the time-walk effect. The time resolution was measured to be 65 ps in rms using a picosecond-pulsed laser. This resolution satisfied the requirements of the muon linac of the J-PARC E34 experiment. We measured the bunch width of negative-muonium ions (μ^{+}e^{-}e^{-}) accelerated with a radio-frequency quadrupole using the BWM. The bunch width was successfully measured to be σ=0.54±0.11 ns, which is consistent with the simulation.

Abstract

At the J-PARC muon facility (MUSE), new beamlines started operation recently. H-line is a high-intensity pulsed muon beamline for fundamental physics experiments. The first beam of the H-line was delivered to its first branch (H1 area) in January 2022, where a precise measurement of the muonium hyperfine structure and a search for μ-e conversion will be conducted. Further extension of the second branch of the H-line for a muon g-2/EDM experiment and a transmission muon microscope project is also ongoing. In addition, the second branch of the surface muon beamline (S2 area of the S-line) was opened for a muonium 1S-2S spectroscopy experiment in FY2021. In this paper, the recent upgrade and present status of the J-PARC muon facility and its prospects are presented.

Abstract

Muonium spectroscopy experiment using microwave and J-PARC E34 (J-PARC muon g-2/EDM) experiments aim to measure the hyperfine structure of muonium and anomalous magnetic moment of muon, respectively. Both experiments require homogeneous magnetic fields better than 1 ppm. Therefore, we developed a standard probe to calibrate field measurement probes, with a resolution of 1.92 $\pm$ 0.18 ppb. Moreover, a shift of the nuclear magnetic resonance frequency of the standard probe was also evaluated, and a total uncertainty of the shift is $\pm$ 17.7 ppb.

Abstract

A negative muonium ion (${\mathrm{Mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$) source using an aluminum foil target (Al target) was developed as a low-energy muon source. ${\mathrm{Mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ ions are produced by irradiating the Al target with a 3-MeV positive muon (${\ensuremath{\mu}}^{+}$) beam and observed using a microchannel plate. An experiment to produce ${\mathrm{Mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ ions was conducted to evaluate the performance of this ${\mathrm{Mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ ion source. The measured event rate of ${\mathrm{Mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ ions was $(1.7\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.3)\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}3}\text{ }\text{ }{\mathrm{Mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}}/\mathrm{s}$ when the event rate of the incident ${\ensuremath{\mu}}^{+}$ beam was $1.3\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{6}/\mathrm{s}$. The experiment was conducted at the Muon Science Establishment, D-line in the Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility within the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex. The formation probability, defined as the ratio of the ${\mathrm{Mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ ions to the incident muons on the Al target, was $(1.1\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.2(\mathrm{stat}{)}_{+0.1}^{\ensuremath{-}0.0}(\mathrm{syst}))\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{\ensuremath{-}6}$. This ${\mathrm{Mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ ion source was first adopted in the commissioning of the muon accelerator at the D-line, and the event rate of the accelerated ${\mathrm{Mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ ions was consistent with the expectation. This ${\mathrm{Mu}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ ion source boosted the development of the muon accelerator, and the practicality of this low-energy muon source obtained using a relatively simple apparatus was demonstrated.

Abstract

The MuSEUM collaboration is planning measurements of the ground-state hyperfine structure (HFS) of muonium at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC), Materials and Life Science Experimental Facility. The high-intensity beam that will soon be available, the H-line, allows for more precise measurements by one order of magnitude. We plan to conduct two staged measurements. First, we will measure the Mu-HFS in a near-zero magnetic field, and thereafter we will measure it in a strong magnetic field. We have developed two microwave cavities for this purpose. Furthermore, we evaluated the systematic uncertainties from such a fluctuation of microwave fields and confirmed the requirements for the microwave system; we use a microwave field distribution calculated with the finite element method.

Abstract

We present direct photon-hadron correlations in 200 GeV/A Au+Au, d+Au, and p+p collisions, for direct photon pT from 5–12 GeV/c, collected by the PHENIX Collaboration in the years from 2006 to 2011. We observe no significant modification of jet fragmentation in d+Au collisions, indicating that cold nuclear matter effects are small or absent. Hadrons carrying a large fraction of the quark's momentum are suppressed in Au+Au compared to p+p and d+Au. As the momentum fraction decreases, the yield of hadrons in Au+Au increases to an excess over the yield in p+p collisions. The excess is at large angles and at low hadron pT and is most pronounced for hadrons associated with lower momentum direct photons. Comparison to theoretical calculations suggests that the hadron excess arises from medium response to energy deposited by jets.

Abstract

A new silicon-strip readout chip named "SliT" has been developed for the measurement of the muon anomalous magnetic moment and electric dipole moment at J-PARC. The SliT is designed in the Silterra 180 nm CMOS technology with mixed-signal integrated circuits. An analog circuit incorporates a conventional charge-sensitive amplifier, shaping amplifiers, and two distinct discriminators for each of 128 identical channels. A digital part includes storage memories, an event building block, a serializer, and LVDS drivers. A distinct feature of the SliT is utilization of the zero-cross architecture, which consists of a CR-RC filter followed by a CR circuit as a voltage differentiator. This architecture enables to generate hit signals with subnanosecond amplitude-independent time walk, which is the primary requirement for the experiment. The test results show the time walk of $0.38 \pm 0.16$ ns between 0.5 and 3 MIP signals. The equivalent noise charge is $1547 \pm 75 $ $e^{-}$ (rms) at $C_{\rm det} = 33$ pF as a strip-sensor capacitance. Other functionalities such as a strip-sensor readout chip have also been proven in the tests. The SliT128C satisfies all requirements of the J-PARC muon $g-2$/EDM experiment., 7 pages, 12 figures

Abstract

A hydrogen-like atom consisting of a positive muon and an electron is known as muonium. It is a near-ideal two-body system for a precision test of bound-state theory and fundamental symmetries. The MuSEUM collaboration performed a new precision measurement of the muonium ground-state hyperfine structure at J-PARC using a high-intensity pulsed muon beam and a high-rate capable positron counter. The resonance of hyperfine transition was successfully observed at a near-zero magnetic field, and the muonium hyperfine structure interval of ${\nu}_{\text{HFS}}$ = 4.463302(4) GHz was obtained with a relative precision of 0.9 ppm. The result was consistent with the previous ones obtained at Los Alamos National Laboratory and the current theoretical calculation. Abstract

The Technical Design for the COMET Phase-I experiment is presented in this paper. COMET is an experiment at J-PARC, Japan, which will search for neutrinoless conversion of muons into electrons in the field of an aluminium nucleus ($\mu-e$ conversion, $\mu^- N \to e^- N$); a lepton flavor violating process. The experimental sensitivity goal for this process in the Phase-I experiment is $3.1\times10^{-15}$, or 90 % upper limit of branching ratio of $7\times 10^{-15}$, which is a factor of 100 improvement over the existing limit. The expected number of background events is 0.032. To achieve the target sensitivity and background level, the 3.2 kW 8 GeV proton beam from J-PARC will be used. Two types of detectors, CyDet and StrECAL, will be used for detecting the \mue conversion events, and for measuring the beam-related background events in view of the Phase-II experiment, respectively. Abstract

A destructive monitor to measure the longitudinal bunch width of a low-energy and low-intensity muon beam was developed. This bunch-width monitor (BWM) employed microchannel plates to detect a single muon with high time resolution. In addition, constant-fraction discriminators were adopted to suppress the time-walk effect. The time resolution was measured to be 65 ps in rms using a picosecond-pulsed laser. This resolution satisfied the requirements of the muon linac of the J-PARC E34 experiment. We measured the bunch width of negative-muonium ions (${\ensuremath{\mu}}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$) accelerated with a radio-frequency quadrupole using the BWM. The bunch width was successfully measured to be $\ensuremath{\sigma}=0.54\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.11\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{ns}$, which is consistent with the simulation.

Abstract

A beam profile monitor (BPM) based on a microchannel plate has been developed for muon beams with low transverse momentum for the measurement of the muon anomalous magnetic moment and electric dipole moment at high precision, with capability of diagnosing muon beams of kinetic energy range from a few keV to 4 MeV. The performance of the BPM has been evaluated using a surface muon beam at J-PARC and additionally with an ultraviolet (UV) light source. It has been confirmed that the BPM has a dynamic range from a few to 1 0 4 muons per bunch without saturation. The spatial resolution of the BPM has been estimated to be less than 0.30 mm. The positron background from muon decays is an obstacle in muon beam profile monitoring and a partial discrimination of the positrons has been achieved under discrete particle conditions.

Abstract

A magnetic field design method of magneto-motive force (coil block (CB) and iron yoke) placements for g − 2 /EDM measurements has been developed and a candidate placements were designed under superconducting limitations of current density 125 A/mm2 and maximum magnetic field on CBs less than 5.5 T. Placements of CBs and an iron yoke with poles were determined by tuning SVD (singular value decomposition) eigenmode strengths. The SVD was applied on a response matrix from magneto-motive forces to the magnetic fields in the muon storage region and two-dimensional (2D) placements of magneto-motive forces were designed by tuning the magnetic field eigenmode strengths obtained by the magnetic field. The tuning was performed iteratively. Magnetic field ripples in the azimuthal direction were minimized for the design. The candidate magnetic design had five CBs and an iron yoke with center iron poles. The magnet satisfied specifications of homogeneity (0.2 ppm peak-to-peak in 2D placements (the cylindrical coordinate of the radial position R and axial position Z ) and less than 1.0 ppm ripples in the ring muon storage volume (0.318 m R 0 . 348 m and -0.05 Z 0.05 m) with 3.0 T strength and a slightly negative B R (magnetic field radial component) at Z > 0.0 m) for the spiral muon injection from the iron yoke at top.

Abstract

We aim to develop an alignment monitor, which consists of a length measurement grid of absolute distance interferometers, where we adopt a ball lens both as a beam collimator and a reflector. Collimated beams by the ball lenses were evaluated to have clear 2-dimensional circular gaussian distributions with their diameters, divergence angles and maximum waist distances agreeing well with their estimated values. An interferometer, which adopts a ball lens both as a collimator and a reflector, were evaluated to have uniform sensitivities against distances from several 10 mm to around 1000 mm, and tolerances against the target offsets of more than ±0.5 mm for the direction perpendicular to the measurement direction. These results show that the ball lens can be adopted for our alignment monitor both as a collimator and a reflector.

Abstract

The muon anomalous magnetic moment $(g-2)_{\mu}$ and electric dipole moment (EDM) are sensitive to new physics beyond the Standard Model. We aim to measure $(g-2)_{\mu}$ with a precision of 0.1 parts per million and search for EDM with a sensitivity of $10^{-21}~e \cdot$cm at J-PARC. In this experiment, we use a silicon strip detector with high granularity and fast response to detect positrons from muon decay. We report on the development status of the silicon strip detector.

Abstract

The PHENIX collaboration presents first measurements of low-momentum ($0.4$1\,GeV/$c$) direct-photon yield $dN_{\gamma}^{\rm dir}/d\eta$ is a smooth function of $dN_{\rm ch}/d\eta$ and can be well described as proportional to $(dN_{\rm ch}/d\eta)^\alpha$ with $\alpha{\approx}1.25$. This scaling behavior holds for a wide range of beam energies at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the Large Hadron Collider, for centrality selected samples, as well as for different, $A$$+$$A$ collision systems. At a given beam energy the scaling also holds for high $p_T$ ($>5$\,GeV/$c$) but when results from different collision energies are compared, an additional $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}$-dependent multiplicative factor is needed to describe the integrated-direct-photon yield., Comment: 673 authors from 82 institutions, 10 pages, 4 figures. v2 is version accepted for publication in Physical Review Letters. Abstract

This paper introduces a new approach to measure the muon magnetic moment anomaly $a_{\mu} = (g-2)/2$, and the muon electric dipole moment (EDM) $d_{\mu}$ at the J-PARC muon facility. The goal of our experiment is to measure $a_{\mu}$ and $d_{\mu}$ using an independent method with a factor of 10 lower muon momentum, and a factor of 20 smaller diameter storage-ring solenoid compared with previous and ongoing muon $g-2$ experiments with unprecedented quality of the storage magnetic field. Additional significant differences from the present experimental method include a factor of 1,000 smaller transverse emittance of the muon beam (reaccelerated thermal muon beam), its efficient vertical injection into the solenoid, and tracking each decay positron from muon decay to obtain its momentum vector. The precision goal for $a_{\mu}$ is statistical uncertainty of 450 part per billion (ppb), similar to the present experimental uncertainty, and a systematic uncertainty less than 70 ppb. Abstract

We report on the development of a front-end ASIC for silicon-strip detectors of the J-PARC Muon g-2/EDM experiment. This experiment aims to measure the muon anomalous magnetic moment and electric dipole moment precisely to explore new physics beyond the Standard Model. Since the time and momentum of positrons from muon decay are key information in the experiment, a fast response with high granularity is demanded to silicon-strip detectors as the positron tracker. The readout ASIC is thus required to tolerate a high hit rate of 1.4 MHz per strip and to have deep memory for the period of 40 us with 5 ns time resolution. To satisfy the experimental requirements, an analog prototype ASIC was newly designed with the Silterra 180 nm CMOS technology. In the evaluation test, the time-walk was demonstrated to reach 0.8~ns with a sufficient dynamic range of 6~MIPs and pulse width of 45~ns for 1 MIP event. Abstract

In this work a muon beam profile monitor based on a thin CsI(Tl) screen with optical readout is suggested. This monitor is intended to measure an upcoming surface muon beam to the silica aerogel target of the muon g−2/EDM experiment at J-PARC. The measurements of luminophore foil parameters with a camera were done as well as the test of the monitor prototype with a surface muon beam at D2 beamline in J-PARC MLF.

Abstract

An inter-digital H-mode drift-tube linac (IH-DTL) is developed in a muon linac at the J-PARC E34 experiment. IH-DTL will accelerate muons from 0.34 MeV to 4.5 MeV at a drive frequency of 324 MHz. Since IH-DTL adopts an APF method, with which the beam is focused in the transverse direction using the RF field only, the proper beam matching of the phase-space distribution is required before the injection into the IH-DTL. Thus, an IH-DTL prototype was fabricated to evaluate the performance of the cavity and beam transmission. As a preparation of the high-power test, a test coupler is designed and fabricated. Abstract

High precision measurements of the ground state hyperfine structure (HFS) of muonium is a stringent tool for testing bound-state quantum electrodynamics (QED) theory, determining fundamental constants of the muon magnetic moment and mass, and searches for new physics. Muonium is the most suitable system to test QED because both theoretical and experimental values can be precisely determined. Previous measurements were performed decades ago at LAMPF with uncertainties mostly dominated by statistical errors. At the J-PARC Muon Science Facility (MUSE), the MuSEUM collaboration is planning complementary measurements of muonium HFS both at zero and high magnetic field. The new high-intensity muon beam that will soon be available at H-Line will provide an opportunity to improve the precision of these measurements by one order of magnitude. An overview of the different aspects of these new muonium HFS measurements, the current status of the preparation for high-field measurements, and the latest results at zero field are presented.

Abstract

A new experiment at J-PARC (E34) is under construction in order to measure the muon’s g-2 to unprecedented precision of 0.1 ppm and electric dipole moment up to the sensitivity of 10-21 e.cm in order to explore new physics beyond the standard model. A novel three-dimensional spiral injection scheme has been devised to inject and store the beam into a small diameter MRI-type storage magnet for E34. The new injection scheme features smooth injection with high storage efficiency for the compact storage magnet. However, spiral injection scheme is an unproven idea, therefore, a Spiral Injection Test Experiment (SITE) is underway to establish this injection scheme. The SITE is consist of 80 keV thermionic electron gun, two-meter-long beamline, and a solenoidal storage magnet. In order to match the beam with the solenoidal field, several optical elements have been placed on the beamline to control the beam phase space. The DC electron beam spiral track has been confirmed by the de-excitation of the nitrogen gas in the vacuum chamber of the storage magnet. A current monitor system has been developed in order to extract the beam current and geometrical information of three-dimensional trajectory. An electric chopper system to produce the pulsed beam and beam monitors to detect the pulsed beam will also be discussed in this paper., Proceedings of the 10th Int. A disk and washer (DAW) coupled cavity linac (CCL) has been developed for a middle velocity part in a muon linac at the J-PARC E34 experiment. Abstract

A newly developed three-dimensional spiral injection scheme for beam insertion into a solenoidal storage ring is reported. A new planned muon g−2/EDM experiment at J-PARC aims to measure g − 2 to a factor of 5 better statistical precision and a factor of 100 better sensitivity for the electric dipole moment (EDM) measurement compared to previous experiments. The J-PARC experiment will use a 3-T MRI solenoid magnet as the muon storage ring with a 0.66 m diameter to achieve a 1-ppm level of local uniformity. The previous g − 2 injection scheme is not applicable for beam injection into a small ring. The new scheme provides a smooth injection utilizing a radial solenoidal fringe field, without causing an error field in the storage volume. The expected storage efficiency is 80% and over, which is to be compared to 3.5% for the previous g − 2 experiment. In addition, the ability to control the storage plane is important for the EDM measurement. In this paper, we introduce the conceptual design and required beam parameters in terms of Twiss functions and the expected injection efficiency.

Abstract

Two magnetic field monitoring systems for g-2/EDM experiment at J-PARC are developed. One is a continuous-wave NMR magnetometer, which is used to measure the field homogeneity in a muon storage region. The other is a Hall effect magnetometer, which is used to measure the magnetic field around the muon injection region and that for focusing the muon beam. In order to improve the accuracy of the commercial NMR magnetometer, a digital signal processing system was implemented instead of an analog one. As for the Hall probe system, a three-axis Helmholtz coil system was fabricated to measure tilt angles of Hall sensors in a three-axis Hall probe. The field homogeneity of each Helmholtz coil was measured, and the result agreed well with the design values.

Abstract

A high-intensity pulsed muon beam is becoming available at the at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex (J-PARC). Many experiments to study fundamental physics using this high-intensity muon beam are proposed. An experiment to measure the muon magnetic moment anomaly ($g-2$) and the muon electric dipole moment (EDM) is one of these experiments and it requires a tracking detector for positrons from muon decay. Fine segmentation is required in a detector to tolerate the high rate of positrons. The time resolution is required to be much better than the muon anomalous spin precession period while a buffer depth of a front-end electronics needs to be much longer than the accelerated muon lifetime. Requirements of this detector also meet requirements of a measurement of the muonium hyperfine structure interval at the J-PARC and another experiment to measure the proton charge radius at Tohoku University. We have developed a single-sided silicon strip sensor with a 190 $\mu$m pitch, a front-end electronics with a sampling rate of 200 MHz and a buffer memory depth of 8192, and a data acquisition system based on DAQ-Middleware for the J-PARC muon $g-2$/EDM experiment. We have fabricated detector modules consisting of this sensor and the front-end electronics. Performance of fabricated detector modules was evaluated at a laboratory and a beam test using the positron beam at Tohoku University. The detector is confirmed to satisfy all requirements of the experiments except for the time walk, which will be solved by the next version of a front-end electronics., Comment: 18 pages, 17 figures

Abstract

The positron tracking detector is developed for the J-PARC muon g − 2 /EDM (E34) experiment. It uses silicon strip sensors for positron detection and signals from sensors are transferred to the front-end readout system via flexible printed circuits (FPCs) glued on the sensors. The front-end readout system consists of application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) on FPCs and the field-programmable gate array (FPGA)-based readout board. Mass production of silicon strip sensors is ongoing. Designs of the FPC on the sensor and the front-end ASIC were fixed and their mass production has been started. Development of other detector components are also ongoing. The status of these developments and fabrications are presented.

Abstract

Production of π0 and η mesons has been measured at midrapidity in Cu+Au collisions at sNN=200GeV. Measurements were performed in π0(η)→γγ decay channel in the 1(2)-20GeV/c transverse momentum range. A strong suppression is observed for π0 and η meson production at high transverse momentum in central Cu+Au collisions relative to the p+p results scaled by the number of nucleon-nucleon collisions. In central collisions the suppression is similar to Au+Au with comparable nuclear overlap. The η/π0 ratio measured as a function of transverse momentum is consistent with mT-scaling parametrization down to pT=2GeV/c, its asymptotic value is constant and consistent with Au+Au and p+p and does not show any significant dependence on collision centrality. Similar results were obtained in hadron-hadron, hadron-nucleus, and nucleus-nucleus collisions as well as in e+e− collisions in a range of collision energies sNN=3−1800 GeV. This suggests that the quark-gluon-plasma medium produced in Cu+Cu collisions either does not affect the jet fragmentation into light mesons or it affects the π0 and η the same way.

Abstract

We have measured the cross section and single-spin asymmetries from forward W±→μ±ν production in longitudinally polarized p+p collisions at s=510 GeV using the PHENIX detector at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The cross sections are consistent with previous measurements at this collision energy, while the most forward and backward longitudinal single spin asymmetries provide new insights into the sea quark helicities in the proton. The charge of the W bosons provides a natural flavor separation of the participating partons. © 2018 authors. Published by the American Physical Society.

Abstract

We present a detailed measurement of charged two- pion correlation functions in 0–30% centrality sNN=200 GeV Au+Au collisions by the PHENIX experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. The data are well described by Bose- Einstein correlation functions stemming from Levy-stable source distributions. Using a fine transverse momentum binning, we extract the correlation strength parameter λ, the Levy index of stability α, and the Levy length scale parameter R as a function of average transverse mass of the pair mT. We find that the positively and the negatively charged pion pairs yield consistent results, and their correlation functions are represented, within uncertainties, by the same Levy-stable source functions. The λ(mT) measurements indicate a decrease of the strength of the correlations at low mT. The Levy length scale parameter R(mT) decreases with increasing mT, following a hydrodynamically predicted type of scaling behavior. The values of the Levy index of stability α are found to be significantly lower than the Gaussian case of α=2, but also significantly larger than the conjectured value that may characterize the critical point of a second-order quark-hadron phase transition.
