Abstract

Gambling disorder (GD) is often considered as a problem of trait-like risk preference. However, the symptoms of GD cannot be fully understood by this trait view. In the present study, we hypothesized that GD patients also had problem with a flexible control of risk attitude (state-dependent strategy optimization), and aimed to investigate the mechanisms underlying abnormal risk-taking of GD. To address this issue, we tested GD patients without comorbidity (GD group: n=21) and age-matched healthy control participants (HC group: n=29) in a multi-step gambling task, in which participants needed to clear ‘block quota’ (required units to clear a block, 1000–7000 units) in 20 choices, and conducted a task-functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiment. Behavioral analysis indeed revealed a less flexible risk-attitude change in the GD group; the GD group failed to avoid risky choice in a specific quota range (low-quota condition), in which risky strategy was not optimal to solve the quota. Accordingly, fMRI analysis highlighted diminished functioning of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC), which has been heavily implicated in cognitive flexibility. To our knowledge, the present study provided the first empirical evidence of a deficit of state-dependent strategy optimization in GD. Focusing on flexible control of risk attitude under quota may contribute to a better understanding of the psychopathology of GDs.

Abstract

Biomass, that is carbon neutral and a renewable resource, becomes attractive after thedecision of Biomass¬Nippon strategy in Japan. Especially, bioethanol as transportationliquid fuel from biomass is attractive in the world. However, food price is increased by theattractiveness because sugar and/or starch are used as feedstock for bio¬ethanol. Therefore, bioethanol production from lignocellulosic biomass is desired in order to avoid the increase of food price. From these situations, we are studying bioethanol production from lignocellulosic biomass using mechano¬chemical pulping pretreatment. On the other hand, the ethanol production cost of 40 JPY/L¬EtOH is desired as Innovation case in Biofuel Technology Innovation Plan. Additionally, GHG emission from bioethanol is also important. In this study, economic and environmental analysis for bioethanol production from lignocellulosic biomass using mechano¬chemical pulping pretreatment were performed byprocess simulation. In the analysis, commercial scale plant (1,000 wood/day, around 100,000kL¬EtOH/yr) was assumed. From the analysis, it was found that the production cost decreased to one fourth when the targets in each step (cultivation of biomass, collection, pretreatment, enzymatic saccharification, fermentation, distillation and dehydration) were achieved. Abstract

A single-stage Stirling cooler has been developed and tested for space applications, which include instrument or detector cooling, and a supplemental cooler for the cryogenic system. The mechanical cooler is a free displacer type and consists of a compressor, a cold head and a connecting tube. The features of this cooler are a moving cylinder, clearance seal by diaphragm spring, twin pole magnet system and pneumatically driven displacer. The typical cooling power is 2 W at 80 K and the input power to the cooler is 50 W without driver electronics. The total weight of the cooler is 4.2 kg. The engineering and the flight models of the cooler have been fabricated and evaluated to verify the capability for three space missions. Heat-resistant barium hexaaluminate combustion catalyst was prepared by a conventional solid-state reaction combined with sub-micron grinding. The barium hexaaluminate thus prepared retained almost the same high surface area at high temperatures as the one prepared by the alkoxide method, exhibiting high activity in the catalytic combustion of methane.

Abstract

Huanzala, one of Japan's few overseas ventures, is located in the Peruvian Andes and produces concentrates of zinc, lead and silver. Recently new veins in the El Recuerdo zone have been developed. Because the new veins are very large and of particularly high grade, the deposit has been developed in a very short time. The veins are located a short distance from the surface and therefore allow direct entry to the work place through access tunnels and ramps for trackless machines. Mining is by mechanical cut and fill. The greater part of the ore is dumped at the main ore pass by LHDs and later transported to the mill by train. Abstract

The dome-shaped cavern, at the Kamioka Pb-Zn mine in Japan, was built at a depth of 1 000 m for use as an underground observatory. The cavern has a diameter of 40 m, is 57.6 m high and was constructed in gneisses and migmatites with some limestone and skarn. ANFO and emulsion explosives with NOBEL detonators were used for excavation and cemented grouted cable- and rock-bolts were used for support. Before and during construction, the behaviour and properties of the in-situ rock mass were monitored. A newly developed elastic finite element analysis method was used to obtain a 3-dimensional solution for stress and displacement under general loading conditions from a 2-dimensional/axisymmetric finite element model. Before and during construction, the behaviour and properties of the in-situ rock mass were monitored. A newly developed elastic finite element analysis method was used to obtain a 3-dimensional solution for stress and displacement under general loading conditions from a 2-dimensional/axisymmetric finite element model. This method was used satisfactorily for predicting rock behaviour during excavation as well as for estimating the in-situ moduli of rock mass deformation.
