Search

XL-Calibur is a hard X-ray (15-80 keV) polarimetry mission operating from a stabilised balloon-borne platform in the stratosphere. It builds on heritage from the X-Calibur mission, which observed the accreting neutron star GX 301-2 from Antarctica, between December 29th 2018 and January 1st 2019. The XL-Calibur design incorporates an X-ray mirror, which focusses X-rays onto a polarimeter comprising a beryllium rod surrounded by Cadmium Zinc Telluride (CZT) detectors. The polarimeter is housed in an anticoincidence shield to mitigate background from particles present in the stratosphere. The mirror and polarimeter-shield assembly are mounted at opposite ends of a 12 m long lightweight truss, which is pointed with arcsecond precision by WASP - the Wallops Arc Second Pointer. The XL-Calibur mission will achieve a substantially improved sensitivity over X-Calibur by using a larger effective area X-ray mirror, reducing background through thinner CZT detectors, and improved anticoincidence shielding. When observing a 1 Crab source for $t_{\rm day}$ days, the Minimum Detectable Polarisation (at 99% confidence level) is $\sim$2$\%\cdot t_{\rm day}^{-1/2}$. The energy resolution at 40 keV is $\sim$5.9 keV. Charge exchange (CX) is an important process in shock physics since it indicates an interaction between downstream ions and ambient neutral hydrogen, suggesting a presence of a collisionless shock. We present a high-resolution spectroscopy of an X-ray bright spot in a nearby supernova remnant (SNR), the Cygnus Loop, with the Reflection Grating Spectrometer (RGS) onboard XMM-Newton. The target is a compact knotty structure called "southwestern knot (SW-K)" located at the outer edge of the shell, where the blast wave is likely interacting with dense surrounding materials. The RGS spectrum of the SW-K shows details of the line features below ~ 1 keV, where we discover a high forbidden-to-resonance line ratio of OVII He$\alpha$. The soft-band (10-35 \AA) spectrum is well explained by a thermal component with a CX X-ray emission obscured by neutral and ionized absorbers. The presence of the CX X-ray emission will provide new insights into the shock physics of SNRs. The high-resolution spectroscopy also reveals that the CNO, Ne and Fe abundances are truly lower than the solar values (0.2-0.4 solar) at the SW-K region . We report on the design and performance of a mixed-signal application specific integrated circuit (ASIC) dedicated to avalanche photodiodes (APDs) in order to detect hard X-ray emissions in a wide energy band onboard the International Space Station. To realize wide-band detection from 20 keV to 1 MeV, we use Ce:GAGG scintillators, each coupled to an APD, with low-noise front-end electronics capable of achieving a minimum energy detection threshold of 20 keV. The developed ASIC has the ability to read out 32-channel APD signals using 0.35 $\mu$m CMOS technology, and an analog amplifier at the input stage is designed to suppress the capacitive noise primarily arising from the large detector capacitance of the APDs. The ASIC achieves a performance of 2099 e$^{-}$ + 1.5 e$^{-}$/pF at root mean square (RMS) with a wide 300 fC dynamic range. Coupling a reverse-type APD with a Ce:GAGG scintillator, we obtain an energy resolution of 6.7% (FWHM) at 662 keV and a minimum detectable energy of 20 keV at room temperature (20 $^{\circ}$C). Furthermore, we examine the radiation tolerance for space applications by using a 90 MeV proton beam, confirming that the ASIC is free of single-event effects and can operate properly without serious degradation in analog and digital processing., Comment: Accepted for publication in NIMA

We describe the in-orbit performance of the soft X-ray imaging system consisting of the Soft X-ray Telescope and the Soft X-ray Imager aboard Hitomi. Verification and calibration of imaging and spectroscopic performance are carried out making the best use of the limited data of less than three weeks. Basic performance including a large field of view of 38'x38' is verified with the first light image of the Perseus cluster of galaxies. Amongst the small number of observed targets, the on-minus-off pulse image for the out-of-time events of the Crab pulsar enables us to measure a half power diameter of the telescope as about 1.3'. The average energy resolution measured with the onboard calibration source events at 5.89 keV is 179 pm 3 eV in full width at half maximum. Light leak and cross talk issues affected the effective exposure time and the effective area, respectively, because all the observations were performed before optimizing an observation schedule and parameters for the dark level calculation. Screening the data affected by these two issues, we measure the background level to be 5.6x10^{-6} counts s^{-1} arcmin^{-2} cm^{-2} in the energy band of 5-12 keV, which is seven times lower than that of the Suzaku XIS-BI., Comment: Accepted for publication in PASJ. 17 pages, 18 figures

A gravitational-wave (GW) transient was identified in data recorded by the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) detectors on 2015 September 14. The event, initially designated G184098 and later given the name GW150914, is described in detail elsewhere. By prior arrangement, preliminary estimates of the time, significance, and sky location of the event were shared with 63 teams of observers covering radio, optical, near-infrared, X-ray, and gamma-ray wavelengths with ground- and space-based facilities. In this Letter we describe the low-latency analysis of the GW data and present the sky localization of the first observed compact binary merger. We summarize the follow-up observations reported by 25 teams via private Gamma-ray Coordinates Network circulars, giving an overview of the participating facilities, the GW sky localization coverage, the timeline and depth of the observations. As this event turned out to be a binary black hole merger, there is little expectation of a detectable electromagnetic (EM) signature. Nevertheless, this first broadband campaign to search for a counterpart of an Advanced LIGO source represents a milestone and highlights the broad capabilities of the transient astronomy community and the observing strategies that have been developed to pursue neutron star binary merger events. We report on Suzaku observations of large-scale X-ray structures possibly related with the Fermi Bubbles obtained in 2013 with a total duration of ~ 80 ks. The observed regions were the: (i) northern cap (N-cap; l ~ 0 deg, 45 deg < b < 55 deg) seen in the Mid-band (1.7-4.0 keV) map recently provided by MAXI-SSC and (ii) southeast claw (SE-claw; l ~ 10 deg, -20 deg < b < -10 deg) seen in the ROSAT all-sky map and MAXI-SSC Low-band (0.7-1.7 keV) map. In each region, we detected diffuse X-ray emissions which are represented by a three component plasma model consisting of an unabsorbed thermal component (kT ~ 0.1 keV) from the Local Bubble, absorbed kT = 0.30+/-0.05 keV emission representing the Galactic Halo, and a power-law component due to the isotropic cosmic X-ray background radiation. The emission measure of the GH component in the SE-claw shows an excess by a factor of ~ 2.5 over the surrounding emission at 2 deg away. We also found a broad excess in the 1.7-4.0 keV count rates across the N-cap after compiling other archival data from Suzaku and Swift. The spectral stacking analysis of the N-cap data indicates the presence of another thermal component with kT = 0.70 (+0.22,-0.11) keV. The temperature of kT ~ 0.3 keV of the Galactic Halo is higher than the ubiquitous value of kT ~ 0.2 keV near the Fermi Bubbles, and can be even higher (~ 0.7 keV). Most supernova remnants (SNRs) are old, in the sense that their structure has been profoundly modified by their interaction with the surrounding interstellar medium (ISM). Old SNRs are very heterogenous in terms of their appearance, reflecting differences in their evolutionary state, the environments in which SNe explode and in the explosion products. Some old SNRs are seen primarily as a result of a strong shock wave interacting with the ISM. Others, the so-called mixed-morphology SNRs, show central concentrations of emission, which may still show evidence of emission from the ejecta. Yet others, the pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe), are seen primarily as a result of emission powered by a pulsar; these SNRs often lack the detectable thermal emission from the primary shock. The underlying goal in all studies of old SNRs is to understand these differences, in terms of the SNe that created them, the nature of the ISM into which they are expanding, and the fundamental physical processes that govern their evolution. Here we identify three areas of study where ASTRO-H can make important contributions. These are constraining abundances and physical processes in mature limb-brightened SNRs, understanding the puzzling nature of mixed-morphology SNRs, and exploring the nature of PWNe. Thanks to the unprecedented spectral resolution and sensitivity of the Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS) to soft thermal X-ray emission, ASTRO-H will open a new discovery window for understanding young, ejecta-dominated, supernova remnants (SNRs). In particular we study how ASTRO-H observations will address, comprehensively, three key topics in SNR research: (1) using abundance measurements to unveil SNR progenitors, (2) using spatial and velocity distribution of the ejecta to understand supernova explosion mechanisms, (3) revealing the link between the thermal plasma state of SNRs and the efficiency of their particle acceleration., Comment: 38 pages, 19 figures, ASTRO-H White Paper

We present Suzaku X-ray observations along two edge regions of the Fermi Bubbles, with eight ~20 ksec pointings across the northern part of the North Polar Spur (NPS) surrounding the north bubble and six across the southernmost edge of the south bubble. After removing compact X-ray features, diffuse X-ray emission is clearly detected and is well reproduced by a three-component spectral model consisting of unabsorbed thermal emission (temperature kT ~0.1 keV from the Local Bubble (LB), absorbed kT ~0.3 keV thermal emission related to the NPS and/or Galactic Halo (GH), and a power-law component at a level consistent with the cosmic X-ray background. The emission measure (EM) of the 0.3 keV plasma decreases by ~50% toward the inner regions of the north-east bubble, with no accompanying temperature change. However, such a jump in the EM is not clearly seen in the south bubble data. While it is unclear if the NPS originates from a nearby supernova remnant or is related to previous activity within/around the Galactic Center, our Suzaku observations provide evidence suggestive of the latter scenario. In the latter framework, the presence of a large amount of neutral matter absorbing the X-ray emission as well as the existence of the kT ~ 0.3 keV gas can be naturally interpreted as a weak shock driven by the bubbles' expansion in the surrounding medium, with velocity v_exp ~300 km/s (corresponding to shock Mach number M ~1.5), compressing the GH gas to form the NPS feature. We also derived an upper limit for any non-thermal X-ray emission component associated with the bubbles and demonstrate, that in agreement with the findings above, the non-thermal pressure and energy estimated from a one-zone leptonic model of its broad-band spectrum, are in rough equilibrium with that of the surrounding thermal plasma., Comment: 18 pages, 10 figures, accepted by ApJ

We present the observation of an extraordinary luminous soft X-ray transient, MAXI J0158-744, by the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) on 2011 November 11. This transient is characterized by a soft X-ray spectrum, a short duration (1.3 x 10^3 s < \Delta T_d < 1.10 x 10^4 s), a very rapid rise (< 5.5 x 10^3 s), and a huge peak luminosity of 2 x 10^40 erg s^-1 in 0.7-7.0 keV band. With Swift observations and optical spectroscopy from the Small and Moderate Aperture Research Telescope System (SMARTS), we confirmed that the transient is a nova explosion, on a white dwarf in a binary with a Be star, located near the Small Magellanic Cloud. An extremely early turn-on of the super-soft X-ray source (SSS) phase (< 0.44 d), the short SSS phase duration of about one month, and a 0.92 keV neon emission line found in the third MAXI scan, 1296 s after the first detection, suggest that the explosion involves a small amount of ejecta and is produced on an unusually massive O-Ne white dwarf close to, or possibly over, the Chandrasekhar limit. We propose that the huge luminosity detected with MAXI was due to the fireball phase, a direct manifestation of the ignition of the thermonuclear runaway process in a nova explosion., Comment: 33 pages, 5 figures, Accepted for publication by ApJ

We perform a survey of the Cr, Mn and Fe-K emission lines in young supernova remnants (SNRs) with the Japanese X-ray astronomy satellite {\sl Suzaku}. The Cr and/or Mn emission lines are detected in 3C\,397 and 0519-69.0 for the first time. We also confirm the detection of these lines in Kepler, W49B, N103B and Cas A. We derive the line parameters (i.e., the line centroid energy, flux and equivalent width [EW]) for these six sources and perform a correlation analysis for the line center energies of Cr, Mn and Fe. Also included in the correlation analysis are Tycho and G344.7-0.1 for which the Cr, Mn and Fe-K line parameters were available in the literature through {\sl Suzaku} observations. We find that the line center energies of Cr correlates very well with that of Fe and that of Mn. This confirms our previous findings that the Cr, Mn and Fe are spatially co-located, share a similar ionization state, and have a common origin in the supernova nucleo-synthesis. We find that the ratio of the EW of the Cr emission line to that of Fe ($\EWR\equiv \EWCr/\EWFe$) provides useful constraints on the SNR progenitors and on the SN explosion mechanisms: for SNRs with $\EWR > 2%$, a type Ia origin is favored (e.g., N103B, G344.7-0.1, 3C\,397 and 0519-69.0); for SNRs with $\EWR < 2%$, they could be of either core-collpase origin or carbon-deflagration Ia origin., Comment: 17 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We report on the abundance of metals (Mg and Fe) in the intracluster medium (ICM) at the outskirts (0.2 r200 - 0.8 r200) of the Perseus cluster. The X-ray spectra were obtained in the Suzaku/XIS mapping observations of this region. We employ single temperature models to fit all the X-ray spectra. The ICM temperature smoothly decreases toward the outer region from 6 keV to 4 keV. The Fe abundance is uniformly distributed at the outskirts (~0.3 solar). The Mg abundance is ~1 solar at the outskirts. The solar ratios of Mg/Fe of the outskirts region (Mg/Fe ~4) are a factor of 4 larger than those of the central region. Various systematic effects, including the spatial fluctuations in the cosmic X-ray background, are taken into account and evaluated. We observed the Cygnus Loop with XMM-Newton (9 pointings) and Suzaku (32 pointings) between 2002 and 2008. The total effective exposure time is 670.2 ks. By using all of the available data, we intended to improve a signal-to-noise ratio of the spectrum. Accordingly, the accumulated spectra obtained by the XIS and the EPIC show some line features around 3 keV that are attributed to the S He$\beta$ and Ar He$\alpha$ lines, respectively. Since the Cygnus Loop is an evolved ($\sim$10,000 yr) supernova remnant whose temperature is relatively low ($<$1 keV) compared with other young remnants, its spectrum is generally faint above 3.0 keV, no emission lines, such as the Ar-K line have ever been detected. The detection of the Ar-K line is the first time and we found that its abundance is significantly higher than that of the solar value; 9.0$^{+4.0}_{-3.8}$ and 8.4$^{+2.5}_{-2.7}$ (in units of solar), estimated from the XIS and the EPIC spectra, respectively. We conclude that the Ar-K line originated from the ejecta of the Cygnus Loop. Follow-up X-ray observations to tightly constrain the abundances of Ar-rich ejecta will be useful to accurately estimate the progenitor's mass., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

Suzaku X-ray observations of a young supernova remnant, Cassiopeia A, were carried out. K-shell transition lines from highly ionized ions of various elements were detected, including Chromium (Cr-Kalpha at 5.61 keV). The X-ray continuum spectra were modeled in the 3.4--40 keV band, summed over the entire remnant, and were fitted with a simplest combination of the thermal bremsstrahlung and the non-thermal cut-off power-law models. The spectral fits with this assumption indicate that the continuum emission is likely to be dominated by the non-thermal emission with a cut-off energy at > 1 keV. The thermal-to-nonthermal fraction of the continuum flux in the 4-10 keV band is best estimated as ~0.1. Non-thermal-dominated continuum images in the 4--14 keV band were made. The peak of the non-thermal X-rays appears at the western part. The peak position of the TeV gamma-rays measured with HEGRA and MAGIC is also shifted at the western part with the 1-sigma confidence. Since the location of the X-ray continuum emission was known to be presumably identified with the reverse shock region, the possible keV-TeV correlations give a hint that the accelerated multi-TeV hadrons in Cassiopeia A are dominated by heavy elements in the reverse shock region., Comment: Publ. We searched for evidence of line emission around 4keV from the northwestern rim of the supernova remnant RX J0852.0-4622 using Suzaku XIS data. Several papers have reported the detection of an emission line around 4.1keV from this region of the sky. This line would arise from K-band fluorescence by Sc, the immediate decay product of 44Ti. We performed spectral analysis for the entire portion of the NW rim of the remnant within the XIS field of view, as well as various regions corresponding to regions of published claims of line emission. We found no line emission around 4.1keV anywhere, and are able to set a restrictive upper limit to the X-ray flux: 1.1x10^-6 s^-1 cm^-2 for the entire field. For every region, our flux upper limit falls below that of the previously claimed detection. Therefore, we conclude that, to date, no definite X-ray line feature from Sc-K emission has been detected in the NW rim of RX J0852.0-4622. Our negative-detection supports the recent claim that RX J0852-4622 is neither young (1700--4000 yr) nor nearby(~750 pc)., Comment: Published in PASJ

We use \suzaku observations to measure the spatial variation of the Fe K$\alpha$ line with radius in the \tycho supernova remnant. The Fe line widths show a significant decrease from a FWHM value of 210 eV at the center to 130 eV at the rim. Over the same radial range the line center energy remains nearly constant. These observations are consistent with a scenario in which the shell of Fe-emitting ejecta in \tycho is expanding at speeds of 2800--3350 km s$^{-1}$. The minimum line width we measure is still a factor of two larger than expected from a single component plasma emission model. If thermal Doppler broadening is the dominant additional source of broadening, we infer an ion temperature of $(1--3) \times 10^{10}$ K., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, To appear in ApJ Letters

We performed a Cr-K emission line survey in young supernova remnants (SNRs) with the Chandra archival data. Our sample includes W49B, Cas A, Tycho and Kepler. We confirmed the existence of the Cr line in W49B and discovered this emission line in the other three SNRs. The line center energies, equivalent widths (EWs) and fluxes of the Cr lines are given. The Cr in Cas A is in a high ionization state while that in Tycho and Kepler is in a much lower one. We find a good positive correlation between Cr and Fe line center energies, suggesting a common origin of Cr and Fe in the nucleosynthesis, which is consistent with the theoretical predictions. We propose that the EW ratio between Cr and Fe can be used as a supplementary constraint on the progenitors' properties and the explosion mechanism., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures, accepted by ApJ

The NeXT (New exploration X-ray Telescope), the new Japanese X-ray Astronomy Satellite following Suzaku, is an international X-ray mission which is currently planed for launch in 2013. NeXT is a combination of wide band X-ray spectroscopy (3 - 80 keV) provided by multi-layer coating, focusing hard X-ray mirrors and hard X-ray imaging detectors, and high energy-resolution soft X-ray spectroscopy (0.3 - 10 keV) provided by thin-foil X-ray optics and a micro-calorimeter array. The mission will also carry an X-ray CCD camera as a focal plane detector for a soft X-ray telescope and a non-focusing soft gamma-ray detector. With these instruments, NeXT covers very wide energy range from 0.3 keV to 600 keV. The micro-calorimeter system will be developed by international collaboration lead by ISAS/JAXA and NASA. Tycho's supernova remnant was observed by the XIS and HXD instruments onboard the Suzaku satellite on 2006 June 26-29 for 92 ks. The spectrum up to 30 keV was well fitted with a two-component model, consisting of a power-law with photon index of 2.7 and a thermal bremsstrahlung model with temperature of 4.7 keV. The former component can alternatively be modeled as synchrotron emission from a population of relativistic electrons with an estimated roll-off energy of around 1 keV. In the XIS spectra, in addition to the prominent Fe K_alpha line (6.445 keV), we observe for the first time significant K_alpha line emission from the trace species Cr and Mn at energies of 5.48 keV and 5.95 keV, respectively. Faint K_beta lines from Ca (4.56 keV) and Fe (7.11 keV) are also seen. The ionization states of Cr and Mn, based on their line centroids, are estimated to be similar to that of Fe K_alpha (Fe XV or XVI)., Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, accepted by PASJ

We report on the discovery of fast-moving X-ray--emitting ejecta knots in the Galactic Oxygen-rich supernova remnant Puppis A from XMM-Newton observations. We find an X-ray knotty feature positionally coincident with an O-rich fast-moving optical filament with blue-shifted line emission located in the northeast of Puppis A. We extract spectra from northern and southern regions of the feature. Applying a one-component non-equilibrium ionization model for the two spectra, we find high metal abundances relative to the solar values in both spectra. This fact clearly shows that the feature originates from metal-rich ejecta. In addition, we find that line emission in the two regions is blue-shifted. The Doppler velocities derived in the two regions are different with each other, suggesting that the knotty feature consists of two knots that are close to each other along the line of sight. Since fast-moving O-rich optical knots/filaments are believed to be recoiled metal-rich ejecta, expelled to the opposite direction against the high-velocity central compact object, we propose that the ejecta knots disclosed here are also part of the recoiled material., Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures

The detection of radioactive decay line of 44Ti provides a unique evidence that the gamma-ray source is a young (< 1,000 yr) supernova remnant because of its short lifetime of about 90 yr. Only two Galactic remnants, Cassiopeia A and RX J0852.0-4622, are hitherto reported to be the 44Ti line emitter, although the detection from the latter has been debated. Here we report on an expansion measurement of the northwestern rim of RX J0852.0-4622 obtained with X-ray observations separated by 6.5 yr. The expansion rate is derived to be 0.023+/-0.006% that is about five times lower than those of young historical remnants. Such a slow expansion suggests that RX J0852.0-4622 is not a young remnant as has been expected. We estimate the age of 1,700-4,300 yr of this remnant depending on its evolutionary stage. Assuming a high shock speed of about 3000 km/sec, which is suggested by the detection of non-thermal X-ray radiation, the distance of about 750 pc to this remnant is also derived., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures, Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal Letters

We present the results of a spatially resolved spectral analysis from four Suzaku observations covering the northeastern rim of the Cygnus Loop. A two-kT_e non-ionization equilibrium (NEI) model fairly well represents our data, which confirms the NEI condition of the plasma there. The metal abundances are depleted relative to the solar values almost everywhere in our field of view. We find abundance inhomogeneities across the field: the northernmost region (Region A) has enhanced absolute abundances compared with other regions. In addition, the relative abundances of Mg/O and Fe/O in Region A are lower than the solar values, while those in the other regions are twice higher than the solar values. As far as we are concerned, neither a circumstellar medium, fragments of ejecta, nor abundance inhomogeneities of the local interstellar medium around the Cygnus Loop can explain the relatively enhanced abundance in Region A. We observed a linearly sliced area of the Cygnus Loop from the north-east to the south-west with Suzaku in seven pointings. After dividing the entire fields of view (FOV) into 119 cells, we extracted spectra from all of the cells and performed spectral analysis for them. We then applied both one- and two-component non-equilibrium ionization (NEI) models for all of the spectra, finding that almost all were significantly better fitted by the two-component NEI model rather than the one-component NEI model. Judging from the abundances, the high-kT_e component must be the ejecta component, while the low-kT_e component comes from the swept-up matter. Therefore, the ejecta turn out to be distributed inside a large area (at least our FOV) of the Cygnus Loop. We divided the entire FOV into northern and southern parts, and found that the ejecta distributions were asymmetric to the geometric center: the ejecta of Si, S, and Fe seem to be distributed more in the south than in the north of the Cygnus Loop by a factor of about 2. The degree of ejecta-asymmetry is consistent with that expected by recent supernova explosion models., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

A charge injection technique is applied to the X-ray CCD camera, XIS (X-ray Imaging Spectrometer) onboard Suzaku. The charge transfer inefficiency (CTI) in each CCD column (vertical transfer channel) is measured by the injection of charge packets into a transfer channel and subsequent readout. This paper reports the performances of the charge injection capability based on the ground experiments using a radiation damaged device, and in-orbit measurements of the XIS. The ground experiments show that charges are stably injected with the dispersion of 91eV in FWHM in a specific column for the charges equivalent to the X-ray energy of 5.1keV. This dispersion width is significantly smaller than that of the X-ray events of 113eV (FWHM) at approximately the same energy. The amount of charge loss during transfer in a specific column, which is measured with the charge injection capability, is consistent with that measured with the calibration source. These results indicate that the charge injection technique can accurately measure column-dependent charge losses rather than the calibration sources. The column-to-column CTI correction to the calibration source spectra significantly reduces the line widths compared to those with a column-averaged CTI correction (from 193eV to 173eV in FWHM on an average at the time of one year after the launch). We present the detailed X-ray spectroscopy of Vela shrapnel A with the XMM-Newton satellite. Vela shrapnel A is one of several protrusions identified as bullets from Vela supernova explosion. The XMM-Newton image shows that shrapnel A consists of a bright knot and a faint trailing wake. We extracted spectra from various regions, finding a prominent Si Ly$_\alpha$ emission line in all the spectra. All the spectra are well represented by the non-equilibrium ionization (NEI) model. The abundances are estimated to be O$\sim$0.3, Ne$\sim$0.9, Mg$\sim$0.8, Si$\sim$3, Fe$\sim$0.8 times their solar values. The non-solar abundance ratio between O and Si indicates that shrapnel A originates from a deep layer of a progenitor star. We found that the relative abundances between heavy elements are almost uniform in shrapnel A, which suggests that the ejecta from supernova explosion are well mixed with swept-up interstellar medium., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, ApJ 10 May 2006, v642 2 issue

We report here on the first pointed X-ray observation of the supernova remnant (SNR) G330.2+1.0. The X-ray morphology is characterized by an extended shell. Its X-ray spectrum is well represented by a single power-law function with a photon index of $\gamma\simeq 2.8$ and interstellar absorption of $n_{\rm H}\simeq2.6\times 10^{22}$[cm$^{-2}$]. We interpret this emission as synchrotron radiation from accelerated electrons at the SNR shock, as seen in SN 1006. The surface brightness of the X-ray emission is anti-correlated with the radio emission, and the power-law spectrum is dominated at the western shell where the radio emission is weak. The co-existence of two distinct (radio bright/X-ray faint and radio faint/X-ray bright) shells in a single supernova remnant challenges our understanding of the particle acceleration and radiation mechanisms in different interstellar environments. The object may be a good target for searching TeV gamma-rays and molecular gas surrounding the blast shock. The NeXT mission has been proposed to study high-energy non-thermal phenomena in the universe. The high-energy response of the super mirror will enable us to perform the first sensitive imaging observations up to 80 keV. The focal plane detector, which combines a fully depleted X-ray CCD and a pixellated CdTe detector, will provide spectra and images in the wide energy range from 0.5 keV to 80 keV. In the soft gamma-ray band up to ~1 MeV, a narrow field-of-view Compton gamma-ray telescope utilizing several tens of layers of thin Si or CdTe detector will provide precise spectra with much higher sensitivity than present instruments. The continuum sensitivity will reach several times 10^(-8) photons/s/keV/cm^(2) in the hard X-ray region and a few times10^(-7) photons/s/keV/cm^(2) in the soft gamma-ray region., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures, to be published in the SPIE proceedings 5488, typo corrected in sec.3

We present spectral analysis of the Crab Nebula obtained with the {\it Chandra} X-ray observatory. The X-ray spectrum is characterized by a power-law whose index varies across the nebula. The variation can be discussed in terms of the particle injection from the pulsar in two different directions: the equatorial plane containing the torus and the symmetry axis along the jet. In the equatorial plane, spectra within the torus are the hardest, with photon index $\alpha \approx 1.9$, and are almost independent of the surface brightness. At the periphery of the torus, the spectrum gradually softens in the outer, lower surface brightness regions, up to $\alpha \approx 3.0$. This indicates that synchrotron losses become significant to X-ray emitting particles at the outer boundary of the torus. We discuss the nature of the torus, incorporating information from observations at other wavelengths. Spectral variations are also seen within the southern jet. The core of the jet is the hardest with $\alpha \approx$ 2.0, and the outer sheath surrounding the core becomes softer with $\alpha$ up to 2.5 at the outermost part. Based on the similarity between the spectra of the jet core and the torus, we suggest that the electron spectra of the particles injected from the pulsar are also similar in these two different directions. The brightness ratio between the near and far sides of the torus can be explained by Doppler boosting and relativistic aberration; however, the observed ratio cannot be derived from the standard weakly magnetized pulsar wind model. Saturn's largest satellite, Titan, transited the Crab Nebula on 5 January 2003. We observed this astronomical event with the {\it Chandra} X-ray Observatory. An ``occultation shadow'' has clearly been detected and is found to be larger than the diameter of Titan's solid surface. The difference gives a thickness for Titan's atmosphere of 880 $\pm$ 60 km. This is the first measurement of Titan's atmospheric extent at X-ray wavelengths. The value measured is consistent with or slightly larger than those estimated from earlier Voyager observations at other wavelengths. We present year-scale morphological variations of the Crab Nebula revealed by Chandra X-ray observatory. Observations have been performed about every 1.7 years over the 3 years from its launch. The variations are clearly recognized at two sites: the torus and the southern jet. The torus, which had been steadily expanding until 1.7 years ago, now appears to have shrunk in the latest observation. Additionally, the circular structures seen to the northeast of the torus have decayed into several arcs. On the other hand, the southern jet shows the growth of its overall kinked-structure. We have investigated the radiation damage effects on a CCD to be employed in the Japanese X-ray astronomy mission including the Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) onboard the International Space Station (ISS). Since low energy protons release their energy mainly at the charge transfer channel, resulting a decrease of the charge transfer efficiency, we thus focused on the low energy protons in our experiments. A 171 keV to 3.91 MeV proton beam was irradiated to a given device. We measured the degradation of the charge transfer inefficiency (CTI) as a function of incremental fluence. A 292 keV proton beam degraded the CTI most seriously. Taking into account the proton energy dependence of the CTI, we confirmed that the transfer channel has the lowest radiation tolerance. We have also developed the different device architectures to reduce the radiation damage in orbit. Among them, the ``notch'' CCD, in which the buried channel implant concentration is increased, resulting in a deeper potential well than outside, has three times higher radiation tolerance than that of the normal CCD. We then estimated the charge transfer inefficiency of the CCD in the orbit of ISS, considering the proton energy spectrum. The CTI value is estimated to be 1.1e-5 per each transfer after two years of mission life in the worse case analysis if the highest radiation-tolerant device is employed. This value is well within the acceptable limit and we have confirmed the high radiation-tolerance of CCDs for the MAXI mission., Comment: 17 pages, 2 table, 12 figures. We have employed a mesh experiment for back-illuminated (BI) CCDs. BI CCDs possess the same structure to those of FI CCDs. Since X-ray photons enter from the back surface of the CCD, a primary charge cloud is formed far from the electrodes. The primary charge cloud expands through diffusion process until it reaches the potential well that is just below the electrodes. Therefore, the diffusion time for the charge cloud produced is longer than that in the FI CCD, resulting a larger charge cloud shape expected. The mesh experiment enables us to specify the X-ray point of interaction with a subpixel resolution. We then have measured a charge cloud shape produced in the BI CCD. We found that there are two components of the charge cloud shape having different size: a narrow component and a broad component. The size of the narrow component is $2.8-5.7 \mu$m in unit of a standard deviation and strongly depends on the attenuation length in Si of incident X-rays. The shorter the attenuation length of X-rays is, the larger the charge cloud becomes. This result is qualitatively consistent with a diffusion model inside the CCD. On the other hand, the size of the broad component is roughly constant of $\simeq 13 \mu$m and does not depend on X-ray energies. Judging from the design value of the CCD and the fraction of each component, we conclude that the narrow component is originated in the depletion region whereas the broad component is in the field-free region., Comment: 14 pages, 1 table, 10 figures. A charge-coupled device (CCD) is a standard imager in optical region in which the image quality is limited by its pixel size. CCDs also function in X-ray region but with substantial differences in performance. An optical photon generates only one electron while an X-ray photon generates many electrons at a time. We developed a method to precisely determine the X-ray point of interaction with subpixel resolution. In particular, we found that a back-illuminated CCD efficiently functions as a fine imager. We present a series of monitoring observations of the Crab Nebula with the Chandra X-ray Observatory, focusing on the temporal evolution of the structure. This series of 8 observations, spanning a period of approximately six months, shows the dynamic nature of the inner X-ray structures. We detected outward moving ``wisps'' from the recently discovered inner ring seen in optical observations. We also find that the inner ring itself shows temporal variations in structure. The torus also appears to be expanding. Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image (MAXI) on the International Space Station (ISS) has two kinds of X-ray detectors: the Gas Slit Camera (GSC) and the Solid-state Slit Camera (SSC). SSC is an X-ray CCD array, consisting of 16 chips, which has the best energy resolution as an X-ray all-sky monitor in the energy band of 0.5 to 10 keV. Each chip consists of 1024x1024 pixels with a pixel size of 24$\mu$m, thus the total area is ~200 cm^2. We have developed an engineering model of SSC, i.e., CCD chips, electronics, the software and so on, and have constructed the calibration system. When an X-ray photon lands into a pixel (event pixel), the primary charge is mainly collected into the event pixel. If the X-ray landing position is sufficiently close to the pixel boundary, the primary charge spills over to the adjacent pixel forming split events. We can easily understand that there are three parameters coupled together; the X-ray landing position inside the pixel, the X-ray event pattern and the primary charge cloud shape. We can determine any one of them from the other two parameters. Since we know the charge cloud shape using the multi-pitch mesh experiment, we can calculate the X-ray landing position with subpixel resolution using the event pattern. We applied our method to Ti-K X-rays for the charge-coupled device with $12 \mu$m square pixel. Once the primary charge splits into the adjacent pixel, we can determine the X-ray landing position with subpixel resolution. Using three- or four-pixel split events, we can determine the X-ray landing position with an accuracy of less than $1 \mu$m. For a two-pixel split event, we obtained a similar position accuracy in the split direction with no improvement in the direction perpendicular to it. We have used a mesh experiment in order to measure the sub-pixel structure of the EPIC MOS CCDs on-board the XMM/NEWTON satellite. The EPIC MOS CCDs have 40 $\mu$m-square pixels which have an open electrode structure in order to improve the detection efficiency for low-energy X-rays. We obtained restored pixel images for various X-ray event grades (e.g. split-pixel events, single pixel events, etc.) at various X-ray energies. We confirmed that the open electrode structure results in a distorted horizontal pixel boundary. The open electrode region generates both single pixel events and vertically split events, but no horizontally split events. Because the single pixel events usually show the best energy resolution, we discuss a method of increasing the fraction of single pixel events from the open electrode region. Furthermore, we have directly measured the thickness of the electrodes and dead-layers by comparing spectra from the open electrode region with those from the other regions: electrodes, electrode finger and channel stop. We can say that EPIC MOS CCDs are more radiation hard than front-illumination chips of ACIS on-board Chandra X-ray Observatory because of their extra absorption thickness above the charge transfer channel. We report here the results of a mesh experiment to measure the subpixel structure of the EPIC MOS CCDs on board the XMM X-ray observatory. The pixel size is 40$\mu$m square while the mesh hole spacing is 48$\mu$m, a combination quite different from our standard mesh experiment. We have verified that this combination functions properly and have analyzed the CCD structure with sub-pixel resolution. The EPIC MOS CCD has an open electrode structure to improve detection efficiency at low energies. We obtained the distribution of various grades of X-ray events inside the pixel. A horizontally split two-pixel event is generated near the channel stop which forms a straight vertical pixel boundary whereas a vertically split two-pixel event is generated where the potential due to the thinned gate structure forms a wavy horizontal pixel boundary. Therefore, the effective pixel shape is not a square but is distorted. The distribution of X-ray events clearly shows that the two etched regions in each pixel, separated by the bridging finger of the enlarged (open) electrode. We measured the difference in X-ray transmission between the conventional and open regions of the pixel using O-K and Cu-L X-ray emission lines, and found it to be consistent with an electrode thickness comprising $0.2\pm0.1\mu$m of Si and $0.6\pm0.2\mu$m of SiO2., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in Nucl. Several shrapnels have been detected in the vicinity of Vela SNR by the ROSAT all-sky survey. We present here the spectral properties of shrapnel `A' observed with the ASCA satellite. A prominent Si-K emission line with relatively weak emission lines from other elements have been detected, revealing that the relative abundance of Si is a few ten-times higher than those of other elements. Combining with the ROSAT PSPC results, we obtained the electron temperature, $kT_{\rm e}$, to be $0.33 \pm 0.01$ keV. The total mass of shrapnel `A' is estimated to be $\sim 0.01 M_\odot$. If it is an ejecta of a supernova explosion, the interstellar matter (ISM) would be swept up in the leading edge while the ejecta material would be peeled off in the trailing edge, which should be confirmed by future observations., Comment: 19pages, 5 figures, 1 table; Accepted for Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japan

MAXI, Monitor of All-sky X-ray Image, is the X-ray observatory on the Japanese experimental module (JEM) Exposed Facility (EF) on the International Space Station (ISS). MAXI is a slit scanning camera which consists of two kinds of X-ray detectors: one is a one-dimensional position-sensitive proportional counter with a total area of $\sim 5000 cm^2$, the Gas Slit Camera (GSC), and the other is an X-ray CCD array with a total area $\sim 200 cm^2$, the Solid-state Slit Camera (SSC). The GSC subtends a field of view with an angular dimension of 1$^\circ\times 180^\circ$ while the SSC subtends a field of view with an angular dimension of 1$^\circ$ times a little less than 180$^\circ$. In the course of one station orbit, MAXI can scan almost the entire sky with a precision of 1$^\circ$ and with an X-ray energy range of 0.5-30 keV. We have developed the engineering model of CCD chips and the analogue electronics for the SSC. The energy resolution of EM CCD for Mn K$\alpha$ has a full-width at half maximum of $\simeq$ 182 eV. We present here the results of the mapping observation of the Cygnus Loop with the Gas Imaging Spectrometer (GIS) onboard the ASCA observatory. The data covered the entire region of the Cygnus Loop. Spatial resolution of the GIS is moderate whereas the energy resolving power is much better than those used in the previous observations. The ASCA soft-band image shows the well-known shell-like feature whereas the ASCA hard-band image shows rather center-filled morphology with a hard X-ray compact source at the blow-up southern region., Comment: 4 pages, 2figures; Accepted for publication in Advances in Space Research, in Proceedings of 32nd Sci. We detected an X-ray compact source inside the Cygnus Loop during the observation project of the whole Cygnus Loop with the ASCA GIS. The source intensity is 0.11 c s$^{-1}$ for GIS and 0.15 c s$^{-1}$ for SIS, which is the strongest in the ASCA band. The X-ray spectra are well fitted by a power law spectrum of a photon index of \error{-2.1}{0.1} with neutral H column of (\error{3.1}{0.6})${\rm \times 10^{21} cm^{-2}}$. Taking into account the interstellar absorption feature, this source is X-ray bright mainly above 1 keV suggesting either an AGN or a rotating neutron star. So far, we did not detect intensity variation nor coherent pulsation mainly due to the limited observation time. There are several optical bright stellar objects within the error region of the X-ray image. We carried out the optical spectroscopy for the brightest source (V=+12.6) and found it to be a G star. We observed the center portion of the Cygnus Loop supernova remnant with the ASCA observatory. The X-ray spectrum of the center portion was significantly different from that obtained at the North-East (NE) limb. The emission lines from Si and S were quite strong while those of O and the continuum emission were similar to those obtained at the NE limb. Based on the spectral analysis, Si and S emission lines originated from a high-kTe and low ionization plasma whereas O and most of the continuum emission arose from a low-kTe and high ionization plasma. We suppose that Si and S emitting gas are present at the interior of the Loop while O lines and continuum emission mainly arise from the shell region. Therefore, we subtracted the spectrum of the NE limb from that of the center. Obtained abundances of Si, S, and Fe were 4 $\pm$ 1, 6 $\pm$ 2, and ${1.3}^{+0.6}_{-0.3}$ times higher than those of the cosmic abundances, respectively, and are $\sim$40 times richer than those obtained at the NE limb. These facts strongly support that some of the crude ejecta must be left at the center portion of the Cygnus Loop.
