Search

The evolution of giant molecular clouds (GMCs), the main sites of high-mass star formation, is an essential process to unravel the galaxy evolution. Using a GMC catalogue of M33 from ALMA-ACA survey, we classified 848 GMCs into three types based on the association with HII regions and their H$\alpha$ luminosities $\textit{L}$(H$\alpha$): Type I is associated with no HII regions; Type II with HII regions of $\textit{L}$(H$\alpha$) $<$ 10$^{37.5}$ erg s$^{-1}$; and Type III with HII regions of $\textit{L}$(H$\alpha$) $\geqq$ 10$^{37.5}$ erg s$^{-1}$. These criteria yield 224 Type I GMCs, 473 Type II GMCs, and 151 Type III GMCs. GMCs show changes in their physical properties according to the types; mass, radius, velocity dispersion, and $^{13}$CO detection rate of GMCs systematically increase from Type I to Type III, and additionally, Type III GMCs are closest to virial equilibrium. Type III GMCs show the highest spatial correlation with clusters younger than 10 Myr, Type II GMCs moderate correlation, and Type I GMCs are almost uncorrelated. We interpret that these types indicate an evolutionary sequence from Type I to Type II, and then to Type III with timescales of 4 Myr, 13 Myr, and 5 Myr, respectively, indicating the GMC lifetime of 22 Myr by assuming that Type II GMC has the same timescale as the Large Magellanic Cloud. The evolved GMCs concentrate on the spiral arms, while the younger GMCs are apart from the arm both to the leading and trailing sides. This indicated that GMCs collide with each other by the spiral potential, leading to the compression of GMCs and the triggering of high-mass star formation, which may support the dynamic spiral model. Young massive clusters (YMCs) are dense aggregates of young stars and are often speculated as potential precursors to globular clusters. However, the formation mechanism of massive and compact gas clumps that precede YMCs remains unknown. In this paper, we study the formation of such massive clumps via fast HI gas collisions (~100 km/s) as suggested by recent observations and their subsequent evolution into YMCs by using three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics simulations involving self-gravity and detailed thermal/chemical processes. In particular, the impact of ionization feedback from stellar radiation is included in an approximate fashion where the temperature within the HII regions is elevated to 10,000 K, while supernova feedback is not included. We examine whether the resulting massive clumps can survive this ionization feedback and evolve into YMCs. Our simulations reveal the emergence of gas clumps that do not only possess substantial mass (~10^5 M_sun) but also sufficient compactness (~5 pc). Notably, these clumps exhibit significantly higher escape velocities compared to the sound speed of the HII region, indicating effective gravitational retention of gas against feedback-induced evaporation. Consequently, these conditions foster efficient star formation within the massive gas clumps, ultimately leading to their evolution into YMCs. During the first four all-sky surveys eRASS:4 carried out from December 2019 to 2021, the extended Roentgen Survey with an Imaging Telescope Array (eROSITA) on board Spektrum-Roentgen-Gamma (Spektr-RG, SRG) observed the Galactic HII region Carina nebula. We analysed the eRASS:4 data to study the distribution and the spectral properties of the hot interstellar plasma and the bright stellar sources in the Carina nebula. Spectral extraction regions of the diffuse emission were defined based on X-ray spectral morphology and multi-wavelength data. The spectra were fit with a combination of thermal and non-thermal emission models. X-ray bright point sources in the Carina nebula are the colliding wind binary $\eta$ Car, several O stars, and Wolf-Rayet (WR) stars. We extracted the spectrum of the brightest stellar sources, which can be well fit with a multi-component thermal plasma model. The spectra of the diffuse emission in the brighter parts of the Carina nebula is well reproduced by two thermal models, a lower-temperature component ($\sim$0.2 keV) and a higher-temperature component (0.6 - 0.8 keV). An additional non-thermal component dominates the emission above $\sim$1 keV in the central region around $\eta$ Car and the other massive stars. Significant orbital variation of the X-ray flux was measured for $\eta$ Car, WR22 and WR25. $\eta$ Car requires an additional time-variable thermal component in the spectral model, which is associated to the wind-wind-collision zone. Properties like temperature, pressure, and luminosity of the X-ray emitting plasma in the Carina nebula derived from the eROSITA data are consistent with theoretical calculations of emission from superbubbles. It confirms that the X-ray emission is caused by the hot plasma inside the Carina nebula which has been shocked-heated by the stellar winds of the massive stars, in particular, of $\eta$ Car., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics

We present the results of ALMA-ACA 7 m-array observations in $^{12}$CO($J=2-1$), $^{13}$CO($J=2-1$), and C$^{18}$O($J=2-1$) line emission toward the molecular-gas disk in the Local Group spiral galaxy M33 at an angular resolution of 7".31 $\times$ 6".50 (30 pc $\times$ 26 pc). We combined the ACA 7 m-array $^{12}$CO($J=2-1$) data with the IRAM 30 m data to compensate for emission from diffuse molecular-gas components. The ACA+IRAM combined $^{12}$CO($J=2-1$) map clearly depicts the cloud-scale molecular-gas structure over the M33 disk. Based on the ACA+IRAM $^{12}$CO($J=2-1$) cube data, we cataloged 848 molecular clouds with a mass range from $10^3$ $M_{\odot}$ to $10^6$ $M_{\odot}$. We found that high-mass clouds ($\geq 10^5 M_{\odot}$) tend to associate with the $8 \mu$m-bright sources in the spiral arm region, while low-mass clouds ($< 10^5 M_{\odot}$) tend to be apart from such $8 \mu$m-bright sources and to exist in the inter-arm region. We compared the cataloged clouds with GMCs observed by the IRAM 30 m telescope at 49 pc resolution (IRAM GMC: Corbelli et al. 2017), and found that a small IRAM GMC is likely to be identified as a single molecular cloud even in ACA+IRAM CO data, while a large IRAM GMC can be resolved into multiple ACA+IRAM clouds. The velocity dispersion of a large IRAM GMC is mainly dominated by the line-of-sight velocity difference between small clouds inside the GMC rather than the internal cloud velocity broadening., Comment: 23 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

The nature of molecular clouds and their statistical behavior in subsolar metallicity environments are not fully explored yet. We analyzed data from an unbiased CO($J$ = 2-1) survey at the spatial resolution of ~2 pc in the northern region of the Small Magellanic Cloud with the Atacama Compact Array to characterize the CO cloud properties. A cloud-decomposition analysis identified 426 spatially/velocity-independent CO clouds and their substructures. Based on the cross-matching with known infrared catalogs by Spitzer and Herschel, more than 90% CO clouds show spatial correlations with point sources. We investigated the basic properties of the CO clouds and found that the radius--velocity linewidth ($R$-$\sigma_{v}$) relation follows the Milky Way-like power-low exponent, but the intercept is ~1.5 times lower than that in the Milky Way. The mass functions ($dN/dM$) of the CO luminosity and virial mass are characterized by an exponent of ~1.7, which is consistent with previously reported values in the Large Magellanic Cloud and in the Milky Way., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures. Massive dense clumps in the Large Magellanic Cloud can be an important laboratory to explore the formation of populous clusters. We report multiscale ALMA observations of the N159W-North clump, which is the most CO-intense region in the galaxy. High-resolution CO isotope and 1.3 mm continuum observations with an angular resolution of $\sim$0."25($\sim$0.07 pc) revealed more than five protostellar sources with CO outflows within the main ridge clump. One of the thermal continuum sources, MMS-2, shows especially massive/dense nature whose total H$_2$ mass and peak column density are $\sim$10$^{4}$ $M_{\odot}$ and $\sim$10$^{24}$ cm$^{-2}$, respectively, and harbors massive ($\sim$100 $M_{\odot}$) starless core candidates identified as its internal substructures. The main ridge containing this source can be categorized as one of the most massive protocluster systems in the Local Group. The CO high-resolution observations found several distinct filamentary clouds extending southward from the star-forming spots. The CO (1-0) data set with a larger field of view reveals a conical-shaped, $\sim$30 pc long complex extending toward the northern direction. These features indicate that a large-scale gas compression event may have produced the massive star-forming complex. Based on the striking similarity between the N159W-North complex and the previously reported other two high-mass star-forming clouds in the nearby regions, we propose a $"$teardrops inflow model$"$ that explains the synchronized, extreme star formation across $>$50 pc, including one of the most massive protocluster clumps in the Local Group., Comment: 25 pages, 14 figures, 6 tables, Accepted for publication in ApJ

We derive the entire dust extinction (Av) map for the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) estimated from the color excess at near-infrared wavelengths. Using the percentile method we recently adopted to evaluate Av distribution along the line of sight, we derive the three-dimensional(3D)Av maps of the three massive star forming regions of N44, N79 and N11 based on the IRSF/SIRIUS point source catalog. The 3D AV maps are compared with the hydrogen column densities N(H) of three different velocity components where one is of the LMC disk velocity and the other two are of velocities lower than the disk velocity. As a result, we obtain 3D dust geometry suggesting that gas collision is on-going between the different velocity components. We also find difference in the timing of the gas collision between the massive star forming regions, which indicates that the gas collision in N44, N79 and N11 occurred later than that in 30 Doradus. In addition, difference by a factor of two in Av/N(H) is found between the velocity components for N44, while significant difference is not found for N79 and N11. From the 3D geometry and Av/N(H) in each star forming region, we suggest that the massive star formation in N44 was induced by an external trigger of tidal interaction between the LMC and the SMC, while that in N79 and N11 is likely to have been induced by internal triggers such as gas converging from the galactic spiral arm and expansion of a supershell although the possibility of tidal interaction cannot be ruled out., Comment: 20 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

We have analyzed the data from a large-scale CO survey toward the northern region of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) obtained with the Atacama Compact Array (ACA) stand-alone mode of ALMA. The primary aim of this study is to comprehensively understand the behavior of CO as an H$_2$ tracer in a low-metallicity environment ($Z\sim0.2~Z_{\odot}$). The total number of mosaic fields is $\sim$8000, which results in a field coverage of 0.26$~$degree$^{2}$ ($\sim$2.9 $\times$10$^{5}$$~$pc$^2$), corresponding to $\sim$10$\%$ area of the galaxy. The sensitive $\sim$2$~$pc resolution observations reveal the detailed structure of the molecular clouds previously detected in the single-dish NANTEN survey. We have detected a number of compact CO clouds within lower H$_2$ column density ($\sim$10$^{20}$$~$cm$^{-2}$) regions whose angular scale is similar to the ACA beam size. Most of the clouds in this survey also show peak brightness temperature as low as $<$1$~$K, which for optically thick CO emission implies an emission size much smaller than the beam size, leading to beam dilution. The comparison between an available estimation of the total molecular material traced by thermal dust emission and the present CO survey demonstrates that more than $\sim$90$\%$ H$_2$ gas cannot be traced by the low-$J$ CO emission. We present the results of analyses of the 12CO (J=1-0), 13CO (J=1-0), and 12CO (J=2-1) emission data toward Gum 31. Three molecular clouds separated in velocity were detected at -25, -20, and -10 km/s . The velocity structure of the molecular clouds in Gum 31 cannot be interpreted as expanding motion. Two of them, the -25 km/s cloud and the -20 km/s cloud, are likely associated with Gum 31, because their 12CO (J=2-1)/12CO (J=1-0) intensity ratios are high. We found that these two clouds show the observational signatures of cloud-cloud collisions (CCCs): a complementary spatial distribution and a V-shaped structure (bridge features) in the position-velocity diagram. In addition, their morphology and velocity structures are very similar to the numerical simulations conducted by the previous studies. We propose a scenario that the -25 km/s cloud and the -20 km/s cloud were collided and triggered the formation of the massive star system HD 92206 in Gum 31. This scenario can explain the offset of the stars from the center and the morphology of Gum 31 simultaneously. The timescale of the collision was estimated to be ~1 Myr by using the ratio between the path length of the collision and the assumed velocity separation. We have carried out a new kinematical analysis of the molecular gas in the Sh2-233 region by using the CO $J$ = 2-1 data taken at $\sim$0.5 pc resolution. The molecular gas consists of a filamentary cloud of 5-pc length with 1.5-pc width where two dense cloud cores are embedded. The filament lies between two clouds, which have a velocity difference of 2.6 km s$^{-1}$ and are extended over $\sim$5 pc. We frame a scenario that the two clouds are colliding with each other and compressed the gas between them to form the filament in $\sim$0.5 Myr which is perpendicular to the collision. It is likely that the collision formed not only the filamentary cloud but also the two dense cores. One of the dense cores is associated with the high-mass protostellar candidate IRAS 05358+3543, a representative high-mass protostar. In the monolithic collapse scheme of high mass star formation, a compact dense core of 100 $M_\odot$ within a volume of 0.1 pc radius is assumed as the initial condition, whereas the formation of such a core remained unexplained in the previous works. We argue that the proposed collision is a step which efficiently collects the gas of 100 $M_\odot$ into 0.1 pc radius. We present a new method to evaluate the dust extinction (AV) along the line of sight using the InfraRed Survey Facility (IRSF) near-infrared (NIR) data of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) HI ridge region. In our method, we estimate an AV value for each star from the NIR color excess and sort them from bluer to redder in each line of sight. Using the percentile values of the sorted AV, we newly construct the three-dimensional AV map. We compare the resultant AV map with the total hydrogen column density N(H) traced by velocity-resolved HI and CO observations. In the LMC HI ridge region, Fukui et al. (2017, PASJ, 69, L5) find two velocity components and an intermediate velocity one bridging them. Comparing our three-dimensional AV maps with N(H) maps at the different velocities, we find that the dust geometry is consistent with the scenario of the on-going gas collision between the two velocities as suggested in the previous study. In addition, we find difference by a factor of 2 in AV/N(H) between the two velocity components, which suggests that inflow gas from the Small Magellanic Clouds (SMC) is mixed in this region. We investigate the Hi envelope of the young, massive GMCs in the star-forming regions N48 and N49, which are located within the high column density Hi ridge between two kpc-scale supergiant shells, LMC 4 and LMC 5. New long-baseline Hi 21 cm line observations with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) were combined with archival shorter baseline data and single dish data from the Parkes telescope, for a final synthesized beam size of 24.75" by 20.48", which corresponds to a spatial resolution of ~ 6 pc in the LMC. It is newly revealed that the Hi gas is highly filamentary, and that the molecular clumps are distributed along filamentary Hi features. In total 39 filamentary features are identified and their typical width is ~ 21 (8-49) [pc]. We propose a scenario in which the GMCs were formed via gravitational instabilities in atomic gas which was initially accumulated by the two shells and then further compressed by their collision. We present $^{12}$CO ($J$ = 2-1), $^{13}$CO ($J$ = 2-1), and C$^{18}$O ($J$ = 2-1) observations toward GMC-8, one of the most massive giant molecular clouds (GMCs) in M33 using ALMA with an angular resolution of 0".44 $\times$ 0".27 ($\sim$2 pc $\times$ 1pc). The earlier studies revealed that its high-mass star formation is inactive in spite of a sufficient molecular reservoir with the total mass of $\sim$10$^{6}$ $M_{\odot}$. The high-angular resolution data enable us to resolve this peculiar source down to a molecular clump scale. One of the GMC's remarkable features is that a round-shaped gas structure (the "Main cloud" ) extends over $\sim$50 pc scale, which is quite different from the other two active star-forming GMCs dominated by remarkable filaments/shells obtained by our series of studies in M33. The fraction of the relatively dense gas traced by the $^{13}$CO data with respect to the total molecular mass is only $\sim$2 %, suggesting that their spatial structure and the density are not well developed to reach an active star formation. The CO velocity analysis shows that the GMC is composed of a single component as a whole, but we found some local velocity fluctuations in the Main cloud and extra blueshifted components at the outer regions. Comparing the CO with previously published large-scale H I data, we suggest that an external atomic gas flow supplied a sufficient amount of material to grow the GMC up to $\sim$10$^6$ $M_{\odot}$., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal ; 10.3847/1538-4357/abeb65

We report the current status of the NASCO (NAnten2 Super CO survey as legacy) project which aims to provide all-sky CO data cube of southern hemisphere using the NANTEN2 4-m submillimeter telescope installed at the Atacama Desert through developing a new multi-beam receiver and a new telescope control system. The receiver consists of 5 beams. The four beams, located at the four corners of a square with the beam separation of 720$''$, are installed with a 100 GHz band SIS receiver having 2-polarization sideband-separation filter. The other beam, located at the optical axis, is installed with a 200 GHz band SIS receiver having 2-polarization sideband-separation filter. The cooled component is modularized for each beam, and cooled mirrors are used. The IF bandwidths are 8 and 4 GHz for 100 and 200 GHz bands, respectively. Using XFFTS spectrometers with a bandwidth of 2 GHz, the lines of $^{12}$CO, $^{13}$CO, and C$^{18}$O of $J$=1$-$0 or $J$=2$-$1 can be observed simultaneously for each beam. The control system is reconstructed on the ROS architecture, which is an open source framework for robot control, to enable a flexible observation mode and to handle a large amount of data. The framework is commonly used and maintained in a robotic field, and thereby reliability, flexibility, expandability, and efficiency in development are improved as compared with the system previously used. The receiver and control system are installed on the NANTEN2 telescope in December 2019, and its commissioning and science verification are on-going. The galactic tidal interaction is a possible mechanism to trigger the active star formation in galaxies. Recent analyses using the Hi data in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) proposed that the tidally driven colliding HI flows, induced by the galactic interaction with the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), triggered high-mass star formation in the southeastern HI Ridge, including R136 and $\sim$400 O/WR stars, and the galactic center region hosting the N44 region. This study performed a comprehensive HI data analysis across the LMC and found that two Hi velocity components defined in the early studies (L- and D- components) are quasi-ubiquitous with signatures of interaction dynamically toward the other prominent HII regions, such as N11 and N79. We characterize the intimidate velocity range (I-component) between the two components as the decelerated gas by momentum conservation in the collisional interaction. The spatial distributions of the I-component and those of the O/WR stars have good agreements with each other whose fraction is more than $\sim$70% at a scale of $\sim$15 pc, which is significantly smaller than the typical GMC size. Based on the results of our new simulations of the LMC-SMC interaction, we propose that the interaction about 0.2 Gyr ago induced efficient infall of gas from the SMC to the LMC and consequently ended up with recent formation of high-mass stars due to collisions of HI gas in the LMC. The new numerical simulations of the gas dynamics successfully reproduce the current distribution of the L-component. We present the results of ALMA observations in $^{12}$CO($J=2-1$), $^{13}$CO($J=2-1$), and C$^{18}$O($J=2-1$) lines and 1.3 mm continuum emission toward a massive ($\sim 10^6 M_{\odot}$) giant molecular cloud associated with the giant H II region NGC 604 in one of the nearest spiral galaxy M33 at an angular resolution of 0''.44 $\times$ 0''.27 (1.8 pc $\times$ 1.1 pc). The $^{12}$CO and $^{13}$CO images show highly complicated molecular structures composed of a lot of filaments and shells whose lengths are 5 -- 20 pc. We found three 1.3 mm continuum sources as dense clumps at edges of two shells and also at an intersection of several filaments. We examined the velocity structures of $^{12}$CO($J=2-1$) emission in the shells and filaments containing dense clumps, and concluded that expansion of the H II regions cannot explain the formation of such dense cores. Alternatively, we suggest that cloud--cloud collisions induced by an external H I gas flow and the galactic rotation compressed the molecular material into dense filaments/shells as ongoing high-mass star formation sites. We propose that multiple gas converging/colliding events with a velocity of a few tens km s$^{-1}$ are necessary to build up NGC 604, the most significant cluster-forming complex in the Local Group of galaxies., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal

The Antennae Galaxies is one of the starbursts in major mergers. Tsuge et al. (2020) showed that the five giant molecular complexes in the Antennae Galaxies have signatures of cloud-cloud collisions based on the ALMA archival data at 60 pc resolution. In the present work we analyzed the new CO data toward the super star cluster (SSC) B1 at 14 pc resolution obtained with ALMA, and confirmed that two clouds show complementary distribution with a displacement of $\sim$70 pc as well as the connecting bridge features between them. The complementary distribution shows a good correspondence with the theoretical collision model (Takahira et al. 2014), and indicates that SSC B1 having $\sim$10$^{6}$ $M$$_{\odot}$ was formed by the trigger of a cloud-cloud collision with a time scale of $\sim$1Myr, which is consistent with the cluster age. It is likely that SSC B1 was formed from molecular gas of $\sim$10$^{7}$ $M$$_{\odot}$ with a star formation efficiency of $\sim$10 % in 1 Myr. We identified a few places where additional clusters are forming. Detailed gas motion indicates stellar feedback in accelerating gas is not effective, while ionization plays a role in evacuating the gas around the clusters at a $\sim$30-pc radius. Herein, we present results from observations of the 12CO (J=1-0), 13CO (J=1-0), and 12CO (J=2-1) emission lines toward the Carina nebula complex (CNC) obtained with the Mopra and NANTEN2 telescopes. We focused on massive-star-forming regions associated with the CNC including the three star clusters Tr14, Tr15, and Tr16, and the isolated WR-star HD92740. We found that the molecular clouds in the CNC are separated into mainly four clouds at velocities -27, -20, -14, and -8 km/s. Their masses are 0.7x10^4Msun, 5.0x10^4 Msun, 1.6x10^4 Msun, and 0.7x10^4 Msun, respectively. Most are likely associated with the star clusters, because of their high 12CO (J=2-1)/12CO (J=1-0) intensity ratios and their correspondence to the Spitzer 8 micron distributions. In addition, these clouds show the observational signatures of cloud--cloud collisions. In particular, there is a V-shaped structure in the position--velocity diagram and a complementary spatial distribution between the -20 km/s cloud and the -14 km/s cloud. Based on these observational signatures, we propose a scenario wherein the formation of massive stars in the clusters was triggered by a collision between the two clouds. By using the path length of the collision and the assumed velocity separation, we estimate the timescale of the collision to be ~1 Myr. This is comparable to the ages of the clusters estimated in previous studies.

The formation mechanism of super star clusters (SSCs), a present-day analog of the ancient globulars, still remains elusive. The major merger, the Antennae galaxies is forming SSCs and is one of the primary targets to test the cluster formation mechanism. We reanalyzed the archival ALMA CO data of the Antennae and found three typical observational signatures of a cloud-cloud collision toward SSC B1 and other SSCs in the overlap region; i. two velocity components with $\sim$100 km s$^{-1}$ velocity separation, ii. the bridge features connecting the two components, and iii. the complementary spatial distribution between them, lending support for collisions of the two components as a cluster formation mechanism. We present a scenario that the two clouds with 100 km s$^{-1}$ velocity separation collided, and SSCs having $\sim$10$^6$-10$^7$ $M_{\rm \odot}$ were formed rapidly during the time scale. {We compared the present results with the recent studies of star forming regions in the Milky Way and the LMC, where the SSCs having $\sim$10$^4$-10$^5$ $M_{\rm \odot}$ are located. We report the first evidence for high-mass star formation triggered by collisions of molecular clouds in M33. Using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, we spatially resolved filamentary structures of giant molecular cloud 37 in M33 using $^{12}$CO($J$ = 2-1), $^{13}$CO($J$ = 2-1), and C$^{18}$O($J$ = 2-1) line emission at a spatial resolution of $\sim$2 pc. There are two individual molecular clouds with a systematic velocity difference of $\sim$6 km s$^{-1}$. Three continuum sources representing up to $\sim$10 high-mass stars with the spectral types of B0V-O7.5V are embedded within the densest parts of molecular clouds bright in the C$^{18}$O($J$ = 2-1) line emission. The two molecular clouds show a complementary spatial distribution with a spatial displacement of $\sim$6.2 pc, and show a V-shaped structure in the position-velocity diagram. These observational features traced by CO and its isotopes are consistent with those in high-mass star-forming regions created by cloud-cloud collisions in the Galactic and Magellanic Cloud HII regions. We present a dust extinction AV map of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) in the H I ridge region using the IRSF near-infrared (IR) data, and compare the AV map with the total hydrogen column density N(H) maps derived from the CO and H I observations. In the LMC H I ridge region, the two-velocity H I components (plus an intermediate velocity component) are identified, and the young massive star cluster is possibly formed by collision between them. In addition, one of the components is suggested to be an inflow gas from the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) which is expected to have even lower metallicity gas (Fukui et al. 2017, PASJ, 69, L5). To evaluate dust/gas ratios in the H I ridge region in detail, we derive the AV map from the near-IR color excess of the IRSF data updated with the latest calibration, and fit the resultant AV map with a combination of the N(H) maps of the different velocity components to successfully decompose it into the 3 components. As a result, we find difference by a factor of 2 in AV /N(H) between the components. In additon, the CO-to-H2 conversion factor also indicates difference between the components, implying the difference in the metallicity. Our results are likely to support the scenario that the gas in the LMC H I ridge region is contaminated with an inflow gas from the SMC with a geometry consistent with the on-going collision between the two velocity components., Comment: 19 pages, 8 figures, accepted for publication in PASJ

We present maps of the dust properties in the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds (SMC, LMC) from fitting Spitzer and Herschel observations with the \citet{DL07} dust model. We derive the abundance of the small carbonaceous grain (or polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon; PAH) component. The global PAH fraction (q_pah, the fraction of the dust mass in the form of PAHs) is smaller in the SMC (1.0$^{+0.3}_{-0.3}$%) than in the LMC (3.3$^{+1.4}_{-1.3}$%). We measure the PAH fraction in different gas phases (H II regions, ionized gas outside of H II regions, molecular gas, and diffuse neutral gas). H II regions appear as distinctive holes in the spatial distribution of the PAH fraction. In both galaxies, the PAH fraction in the diffuse neutral medium is higher than in the ionized gas, but similar to the molecular gas. Even at equal radiation field intensity, the PAH fraction is lower in the ionized gas than in the diffuse neutral gas. We investigate the PAH life-cycle as a function of metallicity between the two galaxies. The PAH fraction in the diffuse neutral medium of the LMC is similar to that of the Milky Way ($\sim4.6$%), while it is significantly lower in the SMC. Plausible explanations for the higher PAH fraction in the diffuse neutral medium of the LMC compared to the SMC include: a more effective PAH production by fragmentation of large grains at higher metallicity, and/or the growth of PAHs in molecular gas., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We have conducted ALMA CO isotopes and 1.3 mm continuum observations toward filamentary molecular clouds of the N159W-South region in the Large Magellanic Cloud with an angular resolution of $\sim$0"25 ($\sim$0.07 pc). Although the previous lower-resolution ($\sim$1") ALMA observations revealed that there is a high-mass protostellar object at an intersection of two line-shaped filaments in $^{13}$CO with the length scale of $\sim$10 pc, the spatially resolved observations, in particular, toward the highest column density part traced by the 1.3 mm continuum emission, the N159W-South clump, show complicated hub-filamentary structures. We also discovered that there are multiple protostellar sources with bipolar outflows along the massive filament. The redshifted/blueshifted components of the $^{13}$CO emission around the massive filaments/protostars have complementary distributions, which is considered to be a possible piece of evidence for a cloud-cloud collision. We propose a new scenario in which the supersonically colliding gas flow triggers the formation of both the massive filament and protostars. This is a modification of the earlier scenario of cloud-cloud collision, by Fukui et al., that postulated the two filamentary clouds occur prior to the high-mass star formation. A recent theoretical study of the shock compression in colliding molecular flows by Inoue et al. demonstrates that the formation of filaments with hub structure is a usual outcome of the collision, lending support for the present scenario. The theory argues that the filaments are formed as dense parts in a shock compressed sheet-like layer, which resembles $"$an umbrella with pokes.$"$, Comment: Comments: 15 pages, 6 figures; Accepted for publication in ApJ

We present the ALMA observations of CO isotopes and 1.3 mm continuum emission toward the N159E-Papillon Nebula in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The spatial resolution is 0"25-0"28 (0.06-0.07 pc), which is a factor of 3 higher than the previous ALMA observations in this region. The high resolution allowed us to resolve highly filamentary CO distributions with typical widths of $\sim$0.1 pc (full width half maximum) and line masses of a few 100 $M_{\odot}$ pc$^{-1}$. The filaments (more than ten in number) show an outstanding hub-filament structure emanating from the nebular center toward the north. We identified for the first time two massive protostellar outflows of $\sim$10$^4$ yr dynamical age along one of the most massive filaments. The observations also revealed several pillar-like CO features around the Nebula. The H II region and the pillars have a complementary spatial distribution and the column density of the pillars is an order of magnitude higher than that of the pillars in the Eagle nebula (M16) in the Galaxy, suggesting an early stage of pillar formation with an age younger than $\sim$10$^5$ yr. We suggest that a cloud-cloud collision triggered the formation of the filaments and protostar within the last $\sim$2 Myr. It is possible that the collision is more recent, as part of the kpc-scale H I flows come from the tidal interaction resulting from the close encounter between the LMC and SMC $\sim$200 Myr ago as suggested for R136 by Fukui et al., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures, Accepted for publication in ApJ

Formation mechanism of a supergiant H II region NGC 604 is discussed in terms of collision of H I clouds in M33. An analysis of the archival H I data obtained with the Very Large Array (VLA) reveals complex velocity distributions around NGC 604. The H I clouds are composed of two velocity components separated by ~ 20 km s^-1 for an extent of ~ 700 pc, beyond the size of the the H II region. Although the H I clouds are not easily separated in velocity with some mixed component represented by merged line profiles, the atomic gas mass amounts to 6 x 10^6 M_Sol and 9 x 10^6 M_Sol for each component. These characteristics of H I gas and the distributions of dense molecular gas in the overlapping regions of the two velocity components suggest that the formation of giant molecular clouds and the following massive cluster formation have been induced by the collision of H I clouds with different velocities. Referring to the existence of gas bridging feature connecting M33 with M31 reported by large-scale HI surveys, the disturbed atomic gas possibly represent the result of past tidal interaction between the two galaxies, which is analogous to the formation of the R136 cluster in the LMC., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures, Accepted for publication in the Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japan

NGC 2359 is an HII region located in the outer Galaxy that contains the isolated Wolf-Rayet (WR) star HD 56925. We present millimeter/submillimeter observations of $^{12}$CO($J$ = 1-0, 3-2) line emission toward the entire nebula. We identified that there are three molecular clouds at VLSR $\sim$37, $\sim$54, and $\sim$67 km s$^{-1}$, and three HI clouds: two of them are at VLSR $\sim$54 km s$^{-1}$ and the other is at $\sim$63 km s$^{-1}$. These clouds except for the CO cloud at 67 km s$^{-1}$ are limb-brightened in the radio continuum, suggesting part of each cloud has been ionized. We newly found an expanding gas motion of CO/HI, whose center and expansion velocities are $\sim$51 and $\sim$4.5 km s$^{-1}$, respectively. This is consistent with large line widths of the CO and HI clouds at 54 km s$^{-1}$. The kinematic temperature of CO clouds at 37 and 54 km s$^{-1}$ are derived to be 17 and 61 K, respectively, whereas that of the CO cloud at 67 km s$^{-1}$ is only 6 K, indicating that the former two clouds have been heated by strong UV radiation. We concluded that the 37 and 54 km s$^{-1}$ CO clouds and three HI clouds are associated with NGC 2359, even if these clouds have different velocities. Although the velocity difference including the expanding motion are typical signatures of the stellar feedback from the exciting star, our analysis revealed that the observed large momentum for the 37 km s$^{-1}$ CO cloud cannot be explained only by the total wind momentum of the WR star and its progenitor. We therefore propose an alternative scenario that the isolated high-mass progenitor of HD 56925 was formed by a collision between the CO clouds at 37 and 54 km s$^{-1}$. A collision between two molecular clouds is one possible candidate for high-mass star formation. The HII region RCW 36, located in the Vela molecular ridge, contains a young star cluster with two O-type stars. We present new CO observations of RCW 36 with NANTEN2, Mopra, and ASTE using $^{12}$CO($J$ = 1-0, 2-1, 3-2) and $^{13}$CO($J$ = 2-1) line emissions. We have discovered two molecular clouds lying at the velocities $V_\mathrm{LSR} \sim$5.5 and 9 km s$^{-1}$. Both clouds are likely to be physically associated with the star cluster, as verified by the good spatial correspondence among the two clouds, infrared filaments, and the star cluster. We also found a high intensity ratio of $\sim$0.6-1.2 for CO $J$ = 3-2 / 1-0 toward both clouds, indicating that the gas temperature has been increased due to heating by the O-type stars. We propose that the O-type stars in RCW 36 were formed by a collision between the two clouds, with a relative velocity separation of 5 km s$^{-1}$. The complementary spatial distributions and the velocity separation of the two clouds are in good agreement with observational signatures expected for O-type star formation triggered by a cloud-cloud collision. We also found a displacement between the complementary spatial distributions of the two clouds, which we estimate to be 0.3 pc assuming the collision angle to be 45$^{\circ}$ relative to the line-of-sight. We estimate the collision timescale to be $\sim$10$^5$ yr. It is probable that the cluster age by Ellerbroek et al. (2013b) is dominated by the low-mass members which were not formed under the triggering by cloud-cloud collision, and that the O-type stars in the center of the cluster are explained by the collisional triggering independently from the low-mass star formation., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures, and 2 tables, accepted for publication in PASJ

Understanding of massive cluster formation is one of the important issues of astronomy. By analyzing the HI data, we have identified that the two HI velocity components (L- and D-components) are colliding toward the HI Ridge, in the southeastern end of the LMC, which hosts the young massive cluster R136 and $\sim$400 O/WR stars (Doran et al. 2013) including the progenitor of SN1987A. The collision is possibly evidenced by bridge features connecting the two HI components and complementary distributions between them. We frame a hypothesis that the collision triggered the formation of R136 and the surrounding high-mass stars as well as the HI & Molecular Ridge. Fujimoto & Noguchi (1990) advocated that the last tidal interaction between the LMC and the SMC about 0.2 Gyr ago induced collision of the L- and D-components. This model is consistent with numerical simulations (Bekki & Chiba 2007b). We suggest that a dense HI partly CO cloud of 10$^{6}$ $M_{\odot}$, a precursor of R136, was formed at the shock-compressed interface between the colliding L- and D-components.
