Peculiar dynamics of a free surface of the superfluid 4He has been observed experimentally with a newly established technique utilizing a number of electrically charged fine metal particles trapped electrically at the surface by Moroshkin et al. They have reported that some portion of the particles exhibit some irregular motions and suggested the existence of quantized vortices interacting with the metal particles. We have conducted calculations with the vortex filament model, which turns out to support the idea of the vortex-particle interactions. The observed anomalous metal particle motions are roughly categorized into two types; (1) circular motions with specific frequencies, and (2) quasi-linear oscillations. The former ones seem to be explained once we consider a vertical vortex filament whose edges are terminated at the bottom and at a particle trapped at the surface. We present an experimental and theoretical study of the 2D dynamics of electrically charged nanoparticles trapped under a free surface of superfluid helium in a static vertical electric field. We focus on the dynamics of particles driven by the interaction with quantized vortices terminating at the free surface. We identify two types of particle trajectories and the associated vortex structures: vertical linear vortices pinned at the bottom of the container and half-ring vortices travelling along the free surface of the liquid.

There are two commonly discussed forms of quantum turbulence in superfluid $^4$He above 1K: in one there is a random tangle of quantizes vortex lines, existing in the presence of a non-turbulent normal fluid; in the second there is a coupled turbulent motion of the two fluids, often exhibiting quasi-classical characteristics on scales larger than the separation between the quantized vortex lines in the superfluid component. The decay of vortex line density, $L$, in the former case is often described by the equation $dL/dt=-\chi_2 (\kappa/2\pi)L^2$, where $\kappa$ is the quantum of circulation, and $\chi_2$ is a dimensionless parameter of order unity. The decay of total turbulent energy, $E$, in the second case is often characterized by an effective kinematic viscosity, $\nu'$, such that $dE/dt=-\nu' \kappa^2 L^2$. We present new values of $\chi_2$ derived from numerical simulations and from experiment, which we compare with those derived from a theory developed by Vinen and Niemela. We summarise what is presently known about the values of $\nu'$ from experiment, and we present a brief introductory discussion of the relationship between $\chi_2$ and $\nu'$, leaving a more detailed discussion to a later paper., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures

We investigate quantum turbulence in a two-dimensional trapped supersolid and demonstrate that both the wave and vortex turbulence involve triple rather than dual cascades, as in a superfluid. Because of the presence of a second gapless mode associated with translation symmetry breaking, a new $k^{-13/3}$ scaling law is predicted to occur in the wave turbulence. Simultaneous fast vortex-antivortex creation and annihilation in the interior of the oscillating supersolid results in a $k^{-1}$ scaling law in the vortex turbulence. We study numerically nonuniform quantum turbulence of coflow in a square channel by the vortex filament model. Coflow means that superfluid velocity $\bm{v}_s$ and normal fluid velocity $\bm{v}_n$ flow in the same direction. Quantum turbulence for thermal counterflow has been long studied theoretically and experimentally. In recent years, experiments of coflow are performed to observe different features from thermal counterflow. By supposing that $\bm{v}_s$ is uniform and $\bm{v}_n$ takes the Hagen-Poiseiulle profile, our simulation finds that quantized vortices are distributed inhomogeneously. Vortices like to accumulate on the surface of a cylinder with $\bm{v}_s \simeq \bm{v}_n$. The hydrogenation of Nd2Fe14B under a high pressure of hydrogen has been investigated for the first time. At the heat-treatment temperature of 600 degree C, the almost complete decomposition of Nd2Fe14B into NdH2+x and alpha-Fe is observed, although a rather long heat-treatment time is necessary to achieve the sufficient hydrogenation. The desorption of hydrogen from NdH2+x does not occur in the furnace-cooling process., Comment: to appear in Results in Physics

Visualization using tracer particles is a relatively new tool available for the study of superfluid turbulence and flow, which is applied here to oscillating objects submerged in the liquid. We report observations of a structure seen in videos taken from outside a cryostat filled with superfluid helium at 2 K, which is possibly a vortex loop attached to an oscillator. The feature, which has the shape of an incomplete arch, is visualized due to the presence of solid H2 tracer particles and is attached to a beam oscillating at 38 Hz in the liquid. It has been recorded in videos taken at 240 frames per second (FPS), fast enough to take around 6 images per period. This makes it possible to follow the structure, and to see that is not rigid. It moves with respect to the oscillator, and its displacement is in phase with the velocity of the moving beam. Analyzing the motion, we come to the conclusion that we may be observing a superfluid vortex attached to the beam and decorated by the hydrogen particles. An alternative model, considering a solid hydrogen filament, has also been analyzed, but the observed phase between the movement of the beam and the filamentary structure is better explained by the superfluid vortex hypothesis.

We investigate the charge density wave transport in a quasi-one-dimensional conductor, orthorhombic tantalum trisulfide ($o$-TaS$_3$), by applying a radio-frequency ac voltage. We find a new ac-dc interference spectrum in the differential conductance, which appear on both sides of the zero-bias peak. The frequency and amplitude dependences of the new spectrum do not correspond to those of any usual ac-dc interference spectrum (Shapiro steps). The results suggest that CDW phase dynamics has a hidden degree of freedom. We propose a model in which $2\pi$ phase solitons behave as liquid. The origin of the new spectrum is that the solitons are depinned from impurity potentials assisted by an ac field when small dc field is applied. We have found that Ce3Pd20As6 crystallizes into a cubic C6Cr23-type structure. Combination of electron probe microanalysis of the chemical composition and Rietveld analysis of the powder X-ray diffraction pattern has revealed an inhomogeneous atomic composition of variable stoichiometry. The physical properties of Ce3Pd20As6 were investigated by measuring the magnetization, electrical resistivity and specific heat. The 4f electrons of Ce3+ ions are well localized but do not show phase transition down to 0.5 K. The metallic electrical resistivity shows a weak Kondo screening. The residual resistivity ratio is rather low probably due to the variable stoichiometry. The magnetization curve and magnetic entropy suggest the Gamma_8 quartet crystalline-electric-field ground state at least one of two Ce sites., Comment: 19 pages, 6 figures, to be published in J. Quantum turbulence accompanying thermal counterflow in superfluid $^4$He was recently visualized by the Maryland group, using micron-sized tracer particles of solid hydrogen (J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. {\bf 77}, 111007 (2008)) . In order to understand the observations we formulate the coupled dynamics of fine particles and quantized vortices, in the presence of a relative motion of the normal and superfluid components. Numerical simulations based on this formulation are shown to agree reasonably well with experimental observations of the velocity distributions of the tracer particles in thermal counterflow.

We have simulated the decay of thermal counterflow quantum turbulence from a statistically steady state at T=1.9[K], with the assumption that the normal fluid is at rest during the decay. The results are consistent with the predictions of the Vinen equation (in essence the vortex line density (VLD) decays as t^{-1}). For the statistically steady state, we determine the parameter c_2, which connects the curvature of the vortex lines and the mean separation of vortices. A formula connecting the parameter \chi_2 of the Vinen equation with c_2 is shown to agree with the results of the simulations. We review recent important topics in quantized vortices and quantum turbulence in atomic Bose--Einstein condensates (BECs). They have previously been studied for a long time in superfluid helium. Quantum turbulence is currently one of the most important topics in low-temperature physics. Atomic BECs have two distinct advantages over liquid helium for investigating such topics: quantized vortices can be directly visualized and the interaction parameters can be controlled by the Feshbach resonance. We have studied a Bose-Einstein condensate of $^{87}Rb$ atoms under an oscillatory excitation. For a fixed frequency of excitation, we have explored how the values of amplitude and time of excitation must be combined in order to produce quantum turbulence in the condensate. Depending on the combination of these parameters different behaviors are observed in the sample. For the lowest values of time and amplitude of excitation, we observe a bending of the main axis of the cloud. Increasing the amplitude of excitation we observe an increasing number of vortices. The vortex state can evolve into the turbulent regime if the parameters of excitation are driven up to a certain set of combinations. If the value of the parameters of these combinations is exceeded, all vorticity disappears and the condensate enters into a different regime which we have identified as the granular phase. Our results are summarized in a diagram of amplitude versus time of excitation in which the different structures can be identified. The transition to turbulence in the boundary flow of superfluid $^4$He is investigated using a vortex--free vibrating wire. At high wire vibration velocities, we found that stable alternating flow around the wire enters a turbulent phase triggered by free vortex rings. Numerical simulations of vortex dynamics demonstrate that vortex rings can attach to the surface of an oscillating obstacle and expand unstably due to the boundary flow of the superfluid, forming turbulence. We performed optical-pump terahertz-probe measurements of a Mott insulator YTiO$_{3}$ and a band semiconductor Si using a laser diode (1.47 eV) and a femtosecond pulse laser (1.55 eV). Both samples possess long energy-relaxation times (1.5 ms for YTiO$_{3}$ and 15 $\mu$s for Si); therefore, it is possible to extract terahertz complex conductivities of photoinduced carriers under equilibrium. We observed highly contrasting behavior - Drude conductivity in Si and localized conductivity possibly obeying the Jonscher law in YTiO$_{3}$. The carrier number at the highest carrier-concentration layer in YTiO$_{3}$ is estimated to be 0.015 per Ti site. Anisotropic conductivity of YTiO$_{3}$ is determined. Our study indicates that localized carriers might play an important role in the incipient formation of photoinduced metallic phases in Mott insulators. In addition, this study shows that the transfer-matrix method is effective for extracting an optical constant of a sample with a spatially inhomogeneous carrier distribution., Comment: 16 pages,7 figures, to appear in J. We report a Cu K-edge resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) study of high-Tc cuprates. Momentum-resolved charge excitations in the CuO2 plane are examined from parent Mott insulators to carrier-doped superconductors. The Mott gap excitation in undoped insulators is found to commonly show a larger dispersion along the [pi,pi] direction than the [pi,0] direction. On the other hand, the resonance condition displays material dependence. Upon hole doping, the dispersion of the Mott gap excitation becomes weaker and an intraband excitation appears as a continuum intensity below the gap at the same time. In the case of electron doping, the Mott gap excitation is prominent at the zone center and a dispersive intraband excitation is observed at finite momentum transfer.

The paper is concerned with the interpretation of many experiments that have been reported recently on the production of quantum turbulence by oscillating spheres, wires and grids in both 4He and 3He-B at temperatures so low that there is a negligible fraction of normal fluid. The experimental results are compared with those obtained in analogous experiments with classical fluids and with preliminary simulations of the quantum turbulence. Particular attention is paid to observed values of drag coefficients and to the very different critical velocities observed in 4He and 3He. It is tentatively concluded that in the case of 4He behaviour may well be similar to that observed in the classical analogues, with relatively small changes when the characteristic size of the oscillating structure is not large compared with the quantized vortex spacing, but that in the case of 3He behaviour is very different and due perhaps to very rapid intrinsic nucleation of the quantized vortices., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

Rapid new developments have occurred in superfluid hydrodynamics since the discovery of a host of unusual phenomena which arise from the diverse structure and dynamics of quantized vortices in 3He superfluids. These have been studied in rotating flow with NMR measurements which at best provide an accurate mapping of the different types of topological defects in the superfluid order parameter field. Four observations are reviewed here: (1) the interplay of different vortex structures at the first order interface between the two major superfluid 3He phases, 3He-A and 3He-B; (2) the shear flow instability of this phase boundary, which is now known as the superfluid Kelvin-Helmholtz instability; (3) the hydrodynamic transition from turbulent to regular vortex dynamics as a function of increasing dissipation in vortex motion; and (4) the peculiar propagation of vortex lines in a long rotating column which even in the turbulent regime occurs in the form of a helically twisted vortex state behind a well-developed vortex front. We consider finite-amplitude Kelvin waves on an inviscid vortex assuming that the vortex core has infinitesimal thickness. By numerically solving the governing Biot-Savart equation of motion, we study how the frequency of the Kelvin waves and the velocity of the perturbed ring depend on the Kelvin wave amplitude. We study a twisted vortex bundle where quantized vortices form helices circling around the axis of the bundle in a "force-free" configuration. Such a state is created by injecting vortices into rotating vortex-free superfluid. Using continuum theory we determine the structure and the relaxation of the twisted state. This is confirmed by numerical calculations. Single-crystal synchrotron x-ray diffraction measurements in strong magnetic fields have been performed for magnetoelectric compounds GdMnO3 and TbMnO3. It has been found that the P || a ferroelectric phase induced by the application of a magnetic field at low temperatures is characterized by commensurate lattice modulation along the orthorhombic b axis with q = 1/2 and q = 1/4. The lattice modulation is ascribed to antiferromagnetic spin alignment with a modulation vector of (0 1/4 1). The change of the spin structure is directly correlated with the magnetic-field-induced electric phase transition, because any commensurate spin modulation with (0 1/4 1) should break glide planes normal to the a axis of the distorted perovskite with the Pbnm space group., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

The dynamics of quantized vortices in rotating $^3$He-B is investigated in the low density (single-vortex) regime as a function of temperature. An abrupt transition is observed at $0.5 T_{\rm c}$. Above this temperature the number of vortex lines remains constant, as they evolve to their equilibrium positions. Below this temperature the number of vortices increases linearly in time until the vortex density has grown sufficiently for turbulence to switch on. On the basis of numerical calculations we suggest a mechanism responsible for vortex formation at low temperatures and identify the mutual friction parameter which governs its abrupt temperature dependence., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures; version submitted to Phys. We report a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) study of charge excitations in the electron-doped high-Tc superconductor Nd1.85Ce0.15CuO4. The intraband and interband excitations across the Fermi energy are separated for the first time by tuning the experimental conditions properly to measure charge excitations at low energy. A dispersion relation with q-dependent width emerges clearly in the intraband excitation, while the intensity of the interband excitation is concentrated around 2 eV near the zone center. The experimental results are consistent with theoretical calculation of the RIXS spectra based on the Hubbard model.

The energy spectrum of superfluid turbulence is studied numerically by solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. We introduce the dissipation term which works only in the scale smaller than the healing length, to remove short wavelength excitations which may hinder the cascade process of quantized vortices in the inertial range. We report the electrical resistivity, Hall coefficient, thermoelectric power, specific heat, and thermal conductivity on single crystals of the type-VIII clathrate Ba8Ga16Sn30 grown from Sn-flux. Negative S and R_H over a wide temperature range indicate that electrons dominate electrical transport properties. Both rho(T) and S(T) show typical behavior of a heavily doped semiconductor. The absolute value of S increases monotonically to 243 uV/K with increasing temperature up to 550 K. The large S may originate from the low carrier concentration n=3.7x10^19 cm^(-3). Hall mobility u_H shows a maximum of 62 cm^2/Vs around 70 K. The analysis of temperature dependence of u_H suggests a crossover of dominant scattering mechanism from ionized impurity to acoustic phonon scattering with increasing temperature. The existence of local vibration modes of Ba atoms in cages composed of Ga and Sn atoms is evidenced by analysis of experimental data of structural refinement and specific heat, which give an Einstein temperature of 50 K and a Debye temperature of 200 K. This local vibration of Ba atoms should be responsible for the low thermal conductivity (1.1 W/m K at 150 K). Quantized vortex lines in helium II can be destabilized by a sufficiently large normal fluid velocity which is parallel to the vortex lines (Donnelly - Glaberson instability). We study what happens if the driving normal fluid is not steady but oscillates periodically with time. We show that in certain situations, although individual perturbations decay when time goes to infinity, a state of transient growth of Kelvin waves is possible, which may explain observations of a small and not reproducible longitudinal component of mutual friction., Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure; submitted

Hydrodynamic flow in both classical and quantum fluids can be either laminar or turbulent. To describe the latter, vortices in turbulent flow are modelled with stable vortex filaments. While this is an idealization in classical fluids, vortices are real topologically stable quantized objects in superfluids. Thus superfluid turbulence is thought to hold the key to new understanding on turbulence in general. The fermion superfluid 3He offers further possibilities owing to a large variation in its hydrodynamic characteristics over the experimentally accessible temperatures. While studying the hydrodynamics of the B phase of superfluid 3He, we discovered a sharp transition at 0.60Tc between two regimes, with regular behaviour at high-temperatures and turbulence at low-temperatures. Unlike in classical fluids, this transition is insensitive to velocity and occurs at a temperature where the dissipative vortex damping drops below a critical limit. This discovery resolves the conflict between existing high- and low-temperature measurements in 3He-B: At high temperatures in rotating flow a vortex loop injected into superflow has been observed to expand monotonically to a single rectilinear vortex line, while at very low temperatures a tangled network of quantized vortex lines can be generated in a quiescent bath with a vibrating wire. In order to explore the origin of the Metal-Insulator (M-I) transition, the precise crystal structures of the hole-doped Mott insulator system, Y1-XCaXTiO3 (x=0.37, 0.39 and 0.41), are studied for the temperature range between 20K and 300K by the synchrotron radiation (SR) X-ray powder diffraction. For both Y0.63Ca0.37TiO3 and Y0.61Ca0.39TiO3 compositions, the orthorhombic (Pbnm) - monoclinic (P21/n) structural phase transition occurs at around 230K, which is much higher than their own M-I transition temperatures, i.e. 60K and 130K, respectively. For these compositions, the significant phase separation (low-temperature orthorhombic + monoclinic) is also found in the vicinity of the M-I transition temperature. On the other hand, Y0.59Ca0.41TiO3, which dose not exhibit M-I transition and preserve a metallic behavior down to 1.5K, is in two phases state from 20K to 300K. It is concluded that the existence of the phase separation causes the M-I transition in Y1-xCaxTiO3, and the low-temperature orthorhombic phase contributes to the metallic property of this system.

We study numerically the reconnection of quantized vortices and the concurrent acoustic emission by the analysis of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. Two quantized vortices reconnect following the process similar to classical vortices; they approach, twist themselves locally so that they become anti-parallel at the closest place, reconnect and leave separately.The investigation of the motion of the singular lines where the amplitude of the wave function vanishes in the vortex cores confirms that they follow the above scenario by reconnecting at a point. This reconnection is not contradictory to the Kelvin's circulation theorem, because the potential of the superflow field becomes undefined at the reconnection point. When the locally anti-parallel part of the vortices becomes closer than the healing length, it moves with the velocity comparable to the sound velocity, emits the sound waves and leads to the pair annihilation or reconnection; this phenomena is concerned with the Cherenkov resonance. The vortices are broken up to smaller vortex loops through a series of reconnection, eventually disappearing with the acoustic emission. This may correspond to the final stage of the vortex cascade process proposed by Feynman. The change in energy components, such as the quantum, the compressible and incompressible kinetic energy is analyzed for each dynamics. The propagation of the sound waves not only appears in the profile of the amplitude of the wave function but also affects the field of its phase, transforming the quantum energy due to the vortex cores to the kinetic energy of the phase field., Comment: 11 pages, 16 figures, LaTeX
