The distribution of suspended particle size and concentration were measured along the Gironde Estuary, France, from the river seaward to the ocean. The suspended particle size and volume concentration were measured using in situ holography and onboard optical techniques utilizing special procedures in order to avoid floc breakage. Sediments discharged by the rivers coagulate upon encountering the very low salinities (0.2%) of the upper estuary (confirmed with laboratory experiments), and are then transported and deposited by currents in the remainder of the estuary. This coagulation, coupled with estuarine circulation, procudes a turbidity maximum which is offset between the surface and bottom waters. The floe size maximum is oceanward of the turbidity maximum and is, likewise, offset along the estuary by about 30 km. The estuary can be subdivided into the following zones: (1) coagulation; (2) hydrodynamic, landward of the null point; and (3) hydrodynamic, seaward of the null point. Initial coagulation appears to be completed in coagulation zone (1), and particles are transported and settled (with very little floc breakage and recoagulation) in zones (2) and (3) only. The floc settling velocities, coupled with estuarine circulation, control the concentration and size distributions of flocs in the water column, and eventually control the deposition of sediments. This chapter presents and explains the position of Nephrops norvegicus in the classification of lobsters. Covered, in order, are systematic classification of Nephrops, taxonomic history of Nephrops, and analysis of Nephrops in nephropid phylogeny. The genus Nephrops was erected by Leach in 1814 and has a long and interesting taxonomic history. Prior to 1972, Nephrops was known by 14 Recent species. All but one of these, N. norvegicus, were removed to a new genus, Metanephrops, by Jenkins (1972). Today, N. norvegicus is still the only known living representative of the genus. Similarly, Nephrops is known by only one fossil species, the Miocene Nephrops kvistgaardae, although several other fossil species have been previously referred to this genus. Nephrops, along with the other familiar and commercially important marine clawed lobsters, is referred to Family Nephropidae, one of 17 marine clawed lobster families arrayed in 3 infraorders, 6 families each in the Astacidea and Glypheidea and 5 in the Polychelida. Infraorder Astacidea includes the Superfamily Nephropoidea, as well as the lesser known 'reef lobsters' of the Superfamily Enoplometopoidea, and the freshwater crayfish, Superfamily Astacoidea. In phylogenetic analyses, the freshwater crayfish form a sister group to the Nephropoidea. It is interpreted that freshwater crayfish evolved from nephropoid lobsters, but from which lobster group is uncertain. The taxonomic placement of N. norvegicus is stable at all levels, from species on up. Despite that, the phylogenetic relationships of Nephrops to other nephropid genera are unsettled due to conflicting results in morphological and molecular analyses. Stable, colloidal sols of submicron size were prepared by titration of aqueous solutions of alkylene oxide surfactants with phosphotungstic acid, H(3)PW(12)O(40) (PTA), followed by neutralization with ammonium or potassium hydroxide. The stoichiometry of the complex between phosphotungstic acid and the ethoxylated surfactant was determined by (1)H and (31)P NMR and was dependent upon the degree of ethoxylation. For example, in the ethoxylated octylphenol having 9-10 ethylene oxide units, Triton X-100, the mole ratio of surfactant to PTA was 4.5. In the ethoxylated octylphenol having 70 ethylene oxide units, Triton X-705, the mole ratio of surfactant to PTA was 1. Prior to nucleation of particles, phosphotungstic acid forms an apparent yellow charge transfer complex with ethoxylated alkylphenol surfactants, typified by Triton X-405. This complex is characterized by an absorption spectrum that is the sum of the spectra of Triton X-405 and PTA with a very weak shoulder at 400-500 nm. Particles were nearly monodisperse and their size was dependent on the nonionic surfactant employed, the heteropolyacid, and the rate of addition of heteropolyacid solution.

The formation of poly(beta-hydroxybutyrate), PHB, by Rhodobacter sphaeroides and Alcaligenes eutrophus was studied using the following carbon sources and solvents: (1), acetate in H2O; (2), D3-acetate in H2O; (3), acetate in 90 to 92% D2O; and (4), D3-acetate in 90 to 92% D2O. The growth of Rb. sphaeroides cultured under condition (2) showed no apparent deuterium isotope effect, while considerably slowed growth in the presence of D2O was observed under conditions (3) and (4). In all cases, the PHB produced under deuterium enriched conditions was of high molecular weight. Interestingly, comparatively high volumetric formation of partially deuterated PHB was obtained using culture condition (4) for A. eutrophus. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-i.r.), pyrolysis gas chromatography mass spectrometry (PGC-m.s.), and nuclear magnetic resonance (n.m.r.) were used to establish the extent and distribution of deuterium in the PHB samples produced. Partially deuterated PHB was obtained in each case, using a deuterium enriched culture. Considerable differences in the extent and distribution of deuterium were found between micro-organisms and culture conditions.
