Abstract

The search for new physics beyond the Standard Model has interesting possibilities at low energies. For example, the recent 6.8$\sigma$ anomaly reported in the invariant mass of $e^+e^-$ pairs from $^8\text{Be}$ nuclear transitions and the discrepancy between predicted and measured values of muon g-2 give strong motivations for a protophobic fifth-force model. At low energies, the electromagnetic interaction is well understood and produces straightforward final states, making it an excellent probe of such models. However, to achieve the required precision, an experiment must address the substantially higher rate of electromagnetic backgrounds. In this paper, we present the results of simulation studies of a trigger system, motivated by the DarkLight experiment, using helical-shape scintillating fibers in a solenoidal magnetic field to veto electron-proton elastic scattering and the associated radiative processes. We also assess the performance of a tracking detector for lepton final states using scintillating fibers in the same setup.

Abstract

The claim in ref.1 [M. Conte et al: "Stern-Gerlach Force on a Precessing Magnetic Moment", Proceedings of PAC07 (http://cern.ch/AccelConf/p07/PAPER/THPAS105.pdf)] that the Stern-Gerlach force on a charged particle with a magnetic moment causes a change in longitudinal momentum proportional to gamma-squared when it traverses a specially configured localized electromagnetic field, contradicts the prediction based on the established interaction Lagrangian. It is shown that extending the calculation in ref. 1 to include the entire spin motion eliminates the gamma-squared term and thus the inconsistency.

We report the measurement of the beam-vector and tensor asymmetries A[subscript ed][superscript V] and A[subscript d][superscript T] in quasielastic ([→ over e],e′p) electrodisintegration of the deuteron at the MIT-Bates Linear Accelerator Center up to missing momentum of 500 MeV/c. Abstract

High-power, relativistic electron beams from energy-recovering linacs have great potential to realize new experimental paradigms for pioneering innovation in fundamental and applied research. A major design consideration for this new generation of experimental capabilities is the understanding of the halo associated with these bright, intense beams. In this Letter, we report on measurements performed using the 100 MeV, 430 kW cw electron beam from the energy-recovering linac at the Jefferson Laboratory’s Free Electron Laser facility as it traversed a set of small apertures in a 127 mm long aluminum block. Thermal measurements of the block together with neutron measurements near the beam-target interaction point yielded a consistent understanding of the beam losses. These were determined to be 3 ppm through a 2 mm diameter aperture and were maintained during a 7 h continuous run., United States. Dept. of Energy. Office of High Energy and Nuclear Physics

Abstract

We propose a design for a minimally perturbing diagnostic minichicane, which utilizes optical synchrotron radiation (OSR) generated from magnetic bends in the chicane, to measure the rms horizontal and vertical beam sizes, divergences, emittances, Twiss parameters and energy spread of a relativistic electron beam. The beam is externally focused to a waist at the first bend and the OSR generated there can be used to measure the rms beam size. Subsequent pairs of bends produce far field OSR interferences (OSRI) whose visibility depends on the beam energy spread and the angular divergence. Under proper conditions, one of these two effects will dominate the OSRI visibility from a particular pair of bends and can be used to diagnose the dominant effect. The properties of different configuration of bends in the chicane have been analyzed to provide an optimum diagnostic design for a given set of beam parameters to: (1) provide a sufficient number of OSR interferences to allow a measurement of the fringe visibility; (2) minimize the effect of coherent synchrotron radiation and space charge forces on the particles motion; and (3) minimize the effect of compression on the bunch length as the beam passes through the chicane. A design for the chicane has been produced for application to the FERMI free electron laser facility and by extension to similar high brightness linear accelerators. Such a diagnostic promises to greatly improve control of the electron beam optics with a noninvasive measurement of beam parameters and allow on-line optics matching and feedback., United States. Abstract

We report precision [superscript 1]H(e, e′π[superscript +])n measurements in the Δ(1232) resonance at Q[superscript 2]=0.127(GeV/c)[superscript 2] obtained at the MIT-Bates out-of-plane scattering facility. These are the lowest, but nonzero, Q[superscript 2] measurements in the π[superscript +] channel. The data offer tests of the theoretical calculations, particularly of the background amplitude contributions. The chiral effective field theory and Sato-Lee model calculations are not in agreement with this experiment.

Abstract

Experimental details of a virtual Compton scattering (VCS) experiment performed on the proton at the MIT-Bates out-of-plane scattering facility are presented. The VCS response functions P[scubscript LL]−P[scubscript TT]/P[scubscript TT]ɛɛ and P[scubscript LT] have been measured at Q[superscript 2]=0.057 GeV[superscript 2]/c[superscript 2]. The generalized electric and magnetic polarizabilities, α(Q[superscript 2]) and β(Q[superscript 2]), and the mean-square electric polarizability radius(r[subscript α][superscript 2]) are obtained from a dispersion analysis of the data. The results are in good agreement with O(p[superscript 3]) heavy baryon chiral perturbation and indicate the dominance of mesonic effects in the polarizabilities., United States. Abstract

The roles played by mesons in the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon are explored using as a basis a model containing vector mesons with coupling to the continuum together with the asymptotic Q2 [Q superscript 2] behavior of perturbative QCD. Specifically, the vector dominance model (GKex) developed by E. L. Lomon is employed, as it is known to be very successful in representing the existing high-quality data published to date. An analysis is made of the experimental uncertainties present when the differences between the GKex model and the data are expanded in orthonormal basis functions. A main motivation for the present study is to provide insight into how the various ingredients in this model yield the measured behavior, including discussions of when dipole form factors are to be expected or not, of which mesons are the major contributors, for instance, at low Q2 [Q superscript 2] or large distances, and of what effects are predicted from coupling to the continuum. Such insights are first discussed in momentum space, followed by an analysis of how different and potentially useful information emerges when both the experimental and theoretical electric form factors are Fourier transformed to coordinate space. While these Fourier transforms should not be interpreted as “charge distributions,” nevertheless the roles played by the various mesons, especially those which are dominant at large or small distance scales, can be explored via such experiment–theory comparisons., United States.
