Trypauchen vagina (Bloch & Schneider, 1801) (Fig. 1)—Pink Worm Goby Gobius vagina Bloch & Schneider, 1801: 73; type locality: India, Tranquebar [Tharangambadi]. Size. Reaches 23 cm total length. Morphology. D VI, 40–50; A39–47; P 15–20. Body very elongate and laterally compressed. A pouch-like cavity just above operculum. Head laterally compressed with reduced eyes. Dorsal and anal fins low, long and confluent with caudal fin. Pelvic fins fused medially, but connecting membrane between innermost rays emarginated posteriorly (Murdy 2006). Scales on body cycloid, no scales on head. Scales small, visible on body and predorsal area as pattern of pale dots. Fresh coloration. Head and body entirely reddish or pinkish red (Fig. 1a). Similar species. None of Mediterranean Gobiidae. Habitat. Inhabits muddy or silty sand bottom in bays and brackish estuaries at depths of 10–90 m (Murdy 2006; Ergüden et al. 2018). Geographic distribution. Recorded from the Arabian Gulf east to Vietnam, Taiwan and the Philippines, unknown from the Red Sea. The burrowing goby, Trypauchen v agina , is recorded for the first time from the Pangpang Bay of Banyuwangi, Indonesia. Types of fish T. vagina is a type that has not published in Indonesia. This fish was caught using trap net in waters Pangpang Bay, which is an essential area in Banyuwangi, East Java. The description of the morphology and fish habitat conditions shows that the region has a diversity of fish resources that need attention. This goby fish has a local name as fish bedhul picek due to the sense of sight on these fish as if it does not work. Eyes covered by skin and socket head section was not found their eyeballs. The body of the specimens is elongate and reddish-pink in fresh specimens in coloration. There is no barbel on the chin. Cycloid scales are present on the whole body except for the head. Muncar people commonly consume T.vagina . This fish has been food sources in several regions but uncommon at several local markets in Indonesia. The T.vagina inhabit at Pangpang Bay as the bay, which has the high primary productivity of these waters due to sufficient nutrient support. Enrichment of nutrient comes from the run-off land and also the input of the number of fishing activity (embankment). An earlier report said that this fish found in waters Banyu Asin, Palembang, Sumatra, Indonesia. It also confirms that the fish found in this study are also living in a mud substrate that is reasonably smooth with right mangrove conditions around the bay, which close to Alas Purwo National Park.

The first records of Trypauchen vagina (Bloch and Schneider, 1801) from Mediterranean Egyptian waters and of Rachycentron canadum (Linnaeus, 1766) from Libyan waters are hereby described, providing new information on the expansion of these two Lessepsian fishes along the southern Mediterranean coasts lying to the west of the Suez Canal. The finding of another Lessepsian fish, Platycephalus indicus (Linnaeus, 1758) from a region further west of its previously- known introduced distribution within Egyptian Mediterranean waters, is also reported, indicating an ongoing successful establishment of this species, previously considered uncommon within the same waters., peer-reviewed

Opportunistic bacteria are microorganisms that have been isolated from a host suffering from stress as a result of parasitic infestation. In this study, two bacterial species, namely Aeromonas hydrophila and Rhizobium radiobacter, were isolated from Trypauchen vagina fish that were infected with Microsporidian parasite cysts from Iraqi marine waters. The infection were mass implanted in the internal and external skeletal muscles and under the gill cover. Many symptoms of bacterial infection were observed in the fish, including flatulence with haemorrhagic fluids, skin disscolouration blackening, separation of crusts, and deformities in the area. The two bacterial species were characterised morphologically and identified using Vitek II system (Biomerieux - USA). To control infection, antibiotic susceptibility was performed using six antibiotics: nalidixic acid, nitrofurantoin, gentamicin, streptomycin, tetracycline and amoxicillin, both bacteria showed high antibiotic resistance. Identification of opportunistic bacteria has a pivotal role in preventing stress factors in fish, treating infections and alleviating their impact on other aquatic organisms.

The relationship between morphometric characters (length, weight and height) of otolith and fish standard length was determined for six intertidal gobiid species from the northern Persian Gulf and Oman Sea. A total of 144 sagittal otoliths were extracted and anlysed from Periophthalmus waltoni, Boleophthalmus dussumieri, Scartelaos tenuis, Istigobius ornatus, Bathygobius meggitti and Trypauchen vagina. Regression equations were derived and found that there is no significant difference in regression coefficients between left and right otoliths of the species studied. Results of the study showed that otolith length (OL) and height (OH) could estimate standard length in all the species studied except in T. vagina, where the otolith weight gave the best estimate of standard length. Results clearly indicated that otolith dimensions of the gobiid fishes studied could provide information about the species and size. Keywords: Body size, Gobiiformes, Otolith dimensions, Regression

Although the ecological importance and impact of non-indigenous species is increasingly recognised and documented in shallow water ecosystems, their presence beyond the shelf has scarcely been documented. A survey of the upper slope biota of the Mediterranean coast of Israel revealed the presence at 200-m depth of individuals of three Erythraean species, the crocodile toothfish Champsodon nudivittis, Golani’s round herring Etrumeus golanii, and the burrowing goby, Trypauchen vagina. In the past decade several Erythraean species, some newly arrived, some well-established, have been collected on the Levantine lower shelf and upper slope. The species invasion revealed that thermal niche estimations based on the species’ native environment may have underestimated their ability to tolerate lower temperatures. The results reported here suggest that the wide thermal tolerance of some Erythraean species may facilitate their bathymetric and geographic expansion. Their spread to the depths where the unique, diverse and fragile mesophotic ‘animal forests’ occur, bodes ill to these beleaguered communities.

Gobiids are a large group of fishes inhabiting freshwater, marine and brackish water habitats. Trypauchen is the Indo-Pacific genus and comprises of two species: Trypauchen pelaeos known from Myanmar, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and China; and T. vagina, distributed from Kuwait, along the coasts of India, ranging eastward to the Philippines, Taiwan and China. A specimen of T. vagina (Bloch and Schneider 1801) was caught by cast net from the shallow water of the Narmada River on 11 April 2017 that has later been preserved in the museum of Department of Zoology, Faculty of Science, The Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, Vadodara (voucher number: ZL-CH-OSH-026). This paper presents the first observation of T. vagina in the Narmada River in Gujarat.

The study was carried out to determine morphometric and meristic characteristics of fish species belonging to Family: Gobiidae, and examined 42 specimens were collected from rivers and estuaries ecosystem in Bangladesh during January and February, 2015. Samples were found in fresh to brackish water and muddy habitats of estuary areas at Nijhum Island, (Hamilton 1822) and Boleophthalmus boddarti (Pallas 1770) have been studied and comparatively described. To evaluate taxonomic and genetic variation in Odontamblyopus lacepedii collected in East Asia, morphometric characters and molecular analysis were described. The body was ribbon-like. The body and head were grayish-purple with no embedded scales. Eyes were rudimentary, but distinct, covered by skin. The dorsal and anal fins were continuous with the caudal fin. The edges of the dorsal, anal, and caudal fins were dark chocolate-brown. Genetic analysis of four species revealed higher mean A + T (55.4%) than G + C (44.6%). Twenty-two haplotype sequences were identified, containing 22 haplotypes, 131 variable sites and 122 parsimony-informative sites, with haplotype and nucleotide diversity differing among species. The intraspecies genetic distances ranged from 0.2% to 0.5% (average 0.3%) and interspecies differences from 1.1% to 17.6% (average 14.6%), respectively, indicating that these four species of Amblyopinae can be accurately identified. The NJ tree constructed using COI fragments based on 22 haplotypes was composed of two main branches: the upper branch comprising O . lacepedii and O . sp. showing a close relationship, with Trypauchen vagina and Ctenotrypauchen microcephalus clustering on the second branch. Thus, the results validated the identification of O . lacepedii at the morphological and genetic level.

An index of relative importance (IRI) was employed to screen for dominant fish in the waters surrounding the Taishan Islands, China, using data from four seasonal trawl surveys undertaken between 2012 and 2013. Niche breadth and niche overlap were measured using the Feinsinger and Morisita-Horn indices, respectively, and the characteristics and seasonal variations in the niches of dominant fish were assessed via non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) and cluster analysis. A total of 80 fish species, including 16 dominant species, were recorded. Only Amblychaeturichthys hexanema was dominant in all seasons. According to niche breadth values and NMDS, the 16 dominant species were grouped into the following three types: (1) wide niche breadth species, including Cynoglossus macrolepidotus, A. hexanema, and Trypauchen vagina, among others; (2) medium niche breadth species, including Setipinna taty and Johnius belangerii; and (3) narrow niche breadth species, including Atrobucca nibe and Coilia mystus. Most species with a wider niche breadth were demersal fish with a lower swimming capability and even distribution. The niche breadth of migrating fish was narrower than that of settled fish. At a given spatial scale, fish with stronger swimming capabilities had a narrower niche breadth. Niche overlap, which is associated with niche specialization, ranged from 0.000 to 0.886 and had an annual mean value of 0.314. In summer and autumn, niche overlap was relatively high within species of the Sciaenidae family and within species of the Gobiidae in autumn. Differences in thermophily, feeding habits, food organism abundance/distribution and predator-prey relationships affected the niche overlap of fish in this area. Cluster analysis revealed that species with the narrowest niche breadth and lowest niche overlap values usually displayed lower aggregation and greater distribution differences compared with other species.

The burrowing goby, Trypauchen vagina, is recorded for the first time from the Iranian coast of the Persian Gulf. Only one other record is known for this species from the Persian Gulf; that record is from Kuwait. The subject record is a new addition to the ichthyofauna of Iran resulting from four T. Vagina specimens being collected from north of Qeshm Island in the Khoran Strait (26°56?N, 55°54?E) in the Persian Gulf.

A new cucullanid nematode, Dichelyne (Dichelyne) breviculus n. sp., collected from the intestine of the goatee croaker Dendrophysa russelii (Cuvier) (Perciformes: Sciaenidae), the burrowing goby Trypauchen vagina (Bloch & Schneider) and the tropical sand goby Acentrogobius caninus (Valenciennes) (Perciformes: Gobiidae) in the South China Sea, is described using both light and scanning electron microscopy. The new species differs from its congeners in the size of body (2.16–2.96 mm in male), the position of the excretory pore and deirids, the length of the spicules (0.90–1.32 mm, representing 32.4–51.9% of body length), the arrangement of the caudal papillae and the morphology of the tail. In addition, in order to primarily assess the validity of the new species genetically, the specimens of D. breviculus n. sp. collected from the three different hosts were also characterised using molecular methods by sequencing and analysing ribosomal [small ribosomal subunit (18S rDNA) and internal transcribed spacer (ITS)] and mitochondrial [cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 (cox1)] target regions. The molecular analyses support the validity of the new species based on the morphological observations.

The ichthyofauna of the eastern Mediterranean, espe cially that of the Levant basin, is characterized as very dynamic. In contrast to most other marine regions of the world, that are characterized by a lessening of the fish bio diversity, the Levant is experiencing in the last few decades

WOS: 000320294500027, This paper concerns records of species that have extended their distribution in the Mediterranean Sea. The finding of the rare brackish angiosperm Althenia filiformis in the island of Cyprus is interesting since its insertion in the Red Data Book of the Flora of Cyprus is suggested. The following species enriched the flora or fauna lists of the relevant countries: the red alga Sebdenia dichotoma (Greece), the hydrachnid mite Pontarachna adriatica (Slovenia), and the thalassinid Gebiacantha talismani (Turkey). Several alien species were recorded in new Mediterranean localities. The record of the burrowing goby Trypauchen vagina in the North Levantine Sea (Turkish coast), suggests the start of spreading of this Lessepsian immigrant in the Mediterranean Sea. This paper presents the first observation of a recent Lessepsian fish species, the burrowing goby, Trypauchen vagina (Bloch and Schneider, 1801) in the North-Eastern Mediterranean Sea, where two specimens of burrowing goby were caught by a shrimp trammel net in Iskenderun Bay. This record indicates the range extension of a possibly established population of burrowing goby in the Eastern Levant Basin. © 2011 The Author(s).
