Introduction: Carcinosarcoma, also known as malignant mixed Mullerian tumor (MMMT) is a malignant biphasic neoplasm consisting of carcinomatous and malignant non-epithelial components of mesenchymal origin. MMMTs typically arise from the female genital tract in patients over 40 years old. Primary extragenital MMMTs are extremely rare with published literature totaling 40 reported cases. The primary peritoneal carcinosarcoma is an aggressive tumor as patients with this tumor have an average survival of 7.6 months. Surgical debulking is the mainstay of treatment for these tumors and systemic chemotherapy is advised in all cases.Case: A 48-year-old Amish female presented with 5 day history of bloating and abdominal pain superimposed on a 1 year history of worsening fatigue and intermittent bloody bowel movements. She was found to have a pelvic mass on physical exam. Computed tomography scan of the abdomen and pelvis that demonstrated stricturing of the sigmoid colon, and a large multi-cystic mass in the midline pelvis measuring 12.5 × 9.9 × 11.7 cm. Colonoscopy showed stenosis due to external compression without intraluminal lesion. CEA and CA 125 levels were elevated and CA 19-9 was normal. Exploratory laparotomy was performed with en-bloc resection of a 15 cm mass originating from the sigmoid colon mesentery with several other small tumor deposits throughout the mesentery. Pathology diagnosed primary peritoneal carcinosarcoma Mullerian-type with three positive lymph nodes.Conclusion: Malignant mixed Mullerian tumor (carcinosarcoma) caries a universally grim prognosis. Herein, we report a unique case of primary peritoneal carcinosarcoma and discuss the work-up and surgical management of this rare tumor.

Air suspension systems are being widely used on ground vehicles in general and buses in particular. The element that makes the superiority of this system is air spring. This paper introduces the application of genetic algorithms method to optimize the parameters of the air spring element. A full model of a bus using air suspension system with air spring element, which is modeled based on the Gensys model. From the real experiments, the bounds of seven optimized parameters of the air spring are determined. In which, by using a single α value, it is possible to determine the optimal parameters according to each desired criteria between the road safety and the ride comfort. Optimal results are verified in the time domain simulations with random road profile according to the ISO standard 8608. The results show that by using the optimal parameters of the air spring when α = 0.5, the ride comfort is improved about 15% while the road safety is still guaranteed.

The aqueous extract of kava (Piper methysticum) root is known as a traditional beverage for daily intake in the Western Pacific Islands, such as Fiji, Tonga, and Vanuatu, to induce relaxation and health-beneficial effects. In this study, the antioxidant, anti-hyperuricemia, and antibacterial properties of kava root were investigated through the isolation and purification of bioactive compounds in ten fractions separated by column chromatography (CC). They included six flavonoids, 5-hydroxy-4′,7-dimethoxyflavanone (C1), matteucinol (C2), isosakuranetin (C3), 5,7- dimethoxyflavanone (C4), 2′,4′-dihydroxy-6′-methoxydihydrochalcone (in MC5) and alpinetin (C10), and seven kavalactones, 5,6-dehydrokawain (DK) (in MC5 and C6), kavain (in MC7), yangonin (in MC7 and C8), dihydro-5,6-dehydrokavain (DDK) (in MC9), 7,8-dihydromethysticin (in MC9), dihydromethysticin (in MC9), methysticin (in MC9). The chemical structures of the compounds were illustrated by the analyses of gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC–MS), electrospray ionization–mass spectrometry (ESI–MS), nuclear magnetic resonance (1H and 13C-NMR), and X-ray diffraction. The evaluation of the free radical scavenging activity of the isolated substances via the DPPH and ABTS assays revealed that C3 (IC50: ABTS = 76.5; DPPH = 74.8 µg/mL) possessed the strongest antioxidant property. In terms of anti-hyperuricemia activity evaluated via the xanthine oxidase inhibitory in vitro assay, the compound C10 was the most promising inhibitor, revealing an IC50 of 134.52 µg/mL. The two kavalactone mixtures in MC5 and a pure compound C6 inhibited the growth of bacteria Listeria monocytogenes, while MC7 can constrain the development of Klebsiella pneumoniae. This is the first study to isolate, purify, and identify the flavonoids isosakuranetin, 2′,4′-dihydroxy-6′-methoxydihydrochalcone and alpinetin in kava root and report their pharmaceutical potential. The identified bioactive compounds showed potent antioxidant, anti-hyperuricemia, and antibacterial activity and thus can enhance the value of beverages and foods derived from kava root.

Purpose: Dental arch dimensions are important not only in dentistry (e.g. orthodontists and prosthodontists, and forensic odontology), but also other medical fields, biology, biometrics, painting or sculpture. This study aimed to determine these dimensions in Vietnamese children and compare these measurements across four ethnic groups and genders. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 3204 Vietnamese children at 7 years of age from four major ethnic groups in Vietnam (Kinh, Tay, Thai and Muong). Results: The means variables in study subjects were 33.72 ± 2.16 mm for upper inter-canine width (UCW); 52.74 ± 2.55 mm for upper inter-molar width (UMW); 8.69 ± 1.79 mm for upper anterior length (UAL); 29.59 ± 1.97 mm for upper posterior length (UPL); 26.94 ± 2.49 mm for lower inter-canine width (LCW); 45.89 ± 2.59 mm for lower inter-molar width (LMW); 5.04 ± 1.53 mm for lower anterior length (LAL); and 26.22 ± 2.07 mm for lower posterior length (LPL). The UCM, UMW, and LMW of Muong were significantly wider in males, but narrower in females compared with other ethnic groups. The Kinh, Tay and Thai groups had no significant differences between genders in all dimensions, but these sizes were significantly larger in males than females of Muong group. Conclusions: This study presents the means of dental arch dimensions in 7 year-old Vietnamese children, and there is no statistical differences in these dimensions between genders of almost studied groups, except Muong group. Ethnic differences are observed only in UCW, UMW and LMW of Muong vs other groups. Furthermore, Vietnamese children have dental arch width similar to the African and Caucasian.

Venous aneurysms often present as painful masses. They can present either in the deep or superficial venous system. Deep venous system aneurysms have a greater risk of thromboembolism. Though rare, there have been case reports of superficial aneurysms and thrombus causing significant morbidity such as pulmonary embolism. We present a case of an anomalous greater saphenous vein connection with an aneurysm and thrombus resulting in a pulmonary embolism. This is the only reported case of an anomalous greater saphenous vein connection with aneurysm and thrombus, which eventually led to a pulmonary embolism. Recognition of the morbidity and mortality associated with superficial venous aneurysms can help prevent catastrophic outcomes such as pulmonary embolism. Surgical intervention on large symptomatic superficial venous aneurysms may be the optimal treatment in preventing unwanted complications compared to anticoagulation alone. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by the appearance of cafe au lait spots, neurofibromas and Lisch nodules. There is an established link between NF1 and the development of breast cancer in women; however, due to the rarity of both NF1 and male breast cancer, the same link has yet to be elucidated in men. The concurrent presentation of NF1 and male breast cancer is a very rare phenomenon with only a handful of case descriptions in the literature. To the best of our knowledge, there have only been four other reported cases of NF1 and male breast cancer before ours. We present one such case of a 56-year-old male with a four generation history of NF1 and a personal history of NF1 who presented with invasive ductal carcinoma of the right breast. Objectives: This reseach aimed to describe micrograph images of experimental carious lesions at early stage. Method: Experimental study. 60 permanent extracted premolars (patient aged 18-25) were cleaned and removed remaining soft tissue. Each tooth was painted with acid-resistant coating leaving an enamel window of approximately 1 × 1 mm2 in buccal surface. After 96 hours being soaked in demineralization solution to create artificial carious lesion, the coating was removed, and all teeth would be evaluated using ICDAS criteria and made tooth specimens to be observed under a scanning electronic microscope (SEM). Results: After being soaked in demineralization solution, the carious lesion gained was at stage ICDAS 1 with 66.7% ; and 33.3% at stage 2. Mean depth and area of the lesions was 107.6 µm and 1.14 µm2, respectively. The difference in depth and area of lesions between group ICDAS 1 và ICDAS 2 was significantly statistical with p=0.0001. Micrograph images showed that after being soaked in demineralization solution, enamel surface became rough, enamel rods lost minerals in the body more than in the sheath, cross-sectional images showed widened gaps between the rods due to demineralization. There was a difference in demineralization degree between group ICDAS 1 and 2. Conclusion: Image of cariouslesions gained after being soaked in demineralization solution showed that naturally carious and artificially carious-like lesions shared many similar characteristics due to theevaluation based on ICDAS criteria for detecting early carious lesions and scanning electronic microscope. The root of Rumex crispus L. has been shown to possess anti-gout and anti-diabetic properties, but the compounds responsible for these pharmaceutical effects have not yet been reported. In this study, we aimed to isolate and purify active components from the root of R. crispus, and to evaluate their anti-radical, anti-gout and anti-diabetic capacities. From the ethyl acetate (EtOAc) extract, two compounds, chrysophanol (1) and physcion (2), were isolated by column chromatography with an elution of hexane and EtOAc at a 9:1 ratio. Their structures were identified by spectrometric techniques including gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), X-ray diffraction analyses and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The results of bioassays indicated that (1) showed stronger activities than (2). For antioxidant activity, (1) and (2) exhibited remarkable DPPH radical scavenging capacity (IC50 = 9.8 and 12.1 µg/mL), which was about two times stronger than BHT (IC50 = 19.4 µg/mL). The anti-gout property of (1) and (2) were comparable to the positive control allopurinol, these compounds exerted strong inhibition against the activity of xanthine oxidase (IC50 = 36.4 and 45.0 µg/mL, respectively). In the anti-diabetic assay, (1) and (2) displayed considerable inhibitory ability on α-glucosidase, their IC50 values (IC50 = 20.1 and 18.9 µg/mL, respectively) were higher than that of standard acarbose (IC50 = 143.4 µg/mL). Findings of this study highlight that (1) and (2) may be promising agents to treat gout and diabetes, which may greatly contribute to the medicinal properties of Rumex crispus root.

Background: In this study, column chromatography was applied to separate active fractions from the ethyl acetate extract of Celastrus hindsii, a medicinal plant widely used in Southern China, Northern Vietnam, Myanmar, and Malaysia. Methods: Fourteen fractions from different dilutions of chloroform and methanol were separated by column chromatography and examined for biological activities. Results: It was found that a dilution of 50−70% methanol in chloroform yielded the highest total phenolics, flavonoids, and antioxidant activities (1,1-dipheny1-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2-azinobis (3-ehtylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid), diammonium salt (ABTS) radical scavenging activity, and β-carotene bleaching method measured by lipid peroxidation inhibition). In addition, by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) analyses, fifteen principal compounds from bioactive fractions belonging to fatty acids, amides, flavonoids, sterols, terpenes, and phenols were identified. Of these compounds, α-amyrin, β-amyrin, hydrazine carboxamide, hexadecanoic acid, fucosterol, (3β)-D:C-friedours-7-en-3-ol, rutin, and 2-hydroxy-1-ethyl ester accounted for maximal quantities, whilst concentrations of other constituents were Conclusions: It is suggested that these identified compounds may greatly contribute to the antioxidant capacity of C. hindsii as well as its potential pharmaceutical properties.

This paper reports the successive isolation and purification of bioactive compounds from the stem bark of Jatropha podagrica, a widely known medicinal plant. The ethyl acetate extract of the stem bark exhibited the strongest antioxidant activity assessed by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH), 2,2′-azinobis-(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical scavenging, and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays (IC50 = 46.7, 66.0, and 492.6, respectively). By column chromatography (CC) with elution of hexane and ethyl acetate at 8:2, 7:3, and 6:4 ratios, the isolation of this active extract yielded five fractions (C1–C5). Chemical structures of the constituents included in C1–C5 were elucidated by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and resolved as methyl gallate (C1, C2, C3, C4), gallic acid (C1, C2), fraxetin (C2, C3, C4, C5), and tomentin (C3). Mixture C2 (IC50 DPPH and ABTS = 2.5 µg/mL) and C3 (IC50 FRAP = 381 µg/mL) showed the highest antioxidant properties. Among the isolated fractions, C4 was the most potential agent in growth inhibition of six bacterial strains including Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Listeria monocytogenes, Bacillus subtilis, and Proteus mirabilis (MIC = 5, 20, 30, 20, 25, and 20 mg/mL, respectively). All identified constituents exerted an inhibitory activity on the growth of Lactuca sativa, of which the mixture C3 performed the maximal inhibition on shoot (IC50 = 49.4 µg/mL) and root (IC50 = 47.1 µg/mL) growth. Findings of this study suggest that gallic acid, methyl gallate, fraxetin, and tomentin isolated from J. podagrica possessed antioxidant, antibacterial, and growth inhibitory potentials.

Although many investigations on phytochemicals in rice plant parts and root exudates have been conducted, information on the chemical profile of essential oil (EO) and potent biological activities has been limited. In this study, chemical compositions of rice leaf EO and in vitro biological activities were investigated. From 1.5 kg of fresh rice leaves, an amount of 20 mg EO was obtained by distillation and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), electrospray ionization (ESI), and atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) to reveal the presence of twelve volatile constituents, of which methyl ricinoleate (27.86%) was the principal compound, followed by palmitic acid (17.34%), and linolenic acid (11.16%), while 2-pentadecanone was the least (2.13%). Two phytoalexin momilactones A and B were first time identified in EO using ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray mass spectrometry (UPLC/ESI-MS) (9.80 and 4.93 ng/g fresh weight, respectively), which accounted for 7.35% and 3.70% of the EO, respectively. The assays of DPPH (IC50 = 73.1 µg/mL), ABTS (IC50 = 198.3 µg/mL), FRAP (IC50 = 700.8 µg/mL) and β-carotene oxidation (LPI = 79%) revealed that EO possessed an excellent antioxidant activity. The xanthine oxidase assay indicated that the anti-hyperuricemia potential was in a moderate level (IC50 = 526 µg/mL) as compared with the standard allopurinol. The EO exerted potent inhibition on growth of Raphanus sativus, Lactuca sativa, and two noxious weeds Echinochloa crus-galli, and Bidens pilosa, but in contrast, the growth of rice seedlings was promoted. Among the examined plants, the growth of the E. crus-galli root was the most inhibited, proposing that constituents found in EO may have potential for the control of the problematic paddy weed E. crus-galli. It was found that the EO of rice leaves contained rich phytochemicals, which were potent in antioxidants and gout treatment, as well as weed management. Findings of this study highlighted the potential value of rice leaves, which may provide extra benefits for rice farmers.

This study examined various factors, including social support as a mediating one, influencing subjective unmet needs (SUN) in Vietnamese older people during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using logistic regression models with a national survey on older persons, we identified determinants of SUN, and then further explored how social support moderated the association between experiencing SUN and chronic diseases. We found that about 25% of Vietnamese older persons experienced SUN during the pandemic, in which more advanced age, living alone, lack of healthcare insurance and having chronic diseases were risk factors, while higher education, better wealth, and stronger social support played as protective factors. Particularly, social support was found a significantly moderated factor between SUN and chronic diseases. Based on these findings, we argued that it would be imperative to strengthen healthcare system at the grassroot level so as to improve accessible and adequate care for older persons, especially those with chronic diseases. Also, enhancing social support via solidary family and community members, particularly in times of crisis, was recommended to address older persons’ healthcare needs.

Tridax procumbens L. is a medicinal plant and used as a drink to treat bronchial catarrh, diarrhea, dysentery and liver diseases. In this study, we evaluated the potential use of T. procumbens to treat hyperuricemia, oxidative stress, and bacterial infection. Ethyl acetate extract of this plant was separated to different fractions by column chromatography (CC) using chloroform and methanol as eluents and subjected to xanthine oxidase (XO) inhibitory, antioxidant, and antibacterial assays. The results showed that the F45–47 fraction exhibited the strongest XO inhibitory activity (IC50 = 133.17 µg/mL), while the F48–50 fraction possessed maximum antioxidant activity assessed by DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) and ABTS (2,2’-azinobis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) assays (IC50 = 0.51 and 1.04 mg/mL, respectively). In addition, the F4–5 fraction presented the most effective inhibition on the growth of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, and Proteus mirabilis. Gas chromatography-mass spectrophotometry (GS-MS) and liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-mass spectrophotometry (LC-ESI-MS) results revealed that fatty acids, glycerides, and flavonoids were the major compounds of the F45–47 fraction. Glycerides, triose sugar alcohols, and fatty acids were dominant compounds of the F48–50 fraction, while sterols were principal components of the F4–5 fraction. This study indicated that T. procumbens had potent inhibitory effects on XO inhibitory, antioxidant, and antibacterial activities. These biological activities may be attributed to the presence of fatty acids, flavonoids, and sterols in this plant. It is suggested that T. procumbens can be utilized as a healthy source to develop beverages and foods to treat antihyperuricemia, oxidative stress, and bacterial infection.

Piper methysticum (kava) root is known to possess promising weed suppressing activity. The present study was conducted to search for potent plant growth inhibitors from the root of this medicinal pepper plant. The ethyl acetate (EtOAc) extract exhibited the strongest reduction on growth of Raphanus sativus (radish) (IC50 shoot and root growth = 172.00 and 51.31 µg/mL respectively) among solvent extracts. From this active extract, nine potent growth inhibitors involved in the inhibitory activities of P. methysticum root were isolated, purified and characterized by column chromatography (CC), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), electrospray ionization-mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The six fractions purified by CC included two flavanones: 5-hydroxy-4′,7-dimethoxyflavanone (C1) and 5,7-dihydroxy-4′-methoxy-6,8-dimethylflavanone (matteucinol, C2) and six kavalactones: 5,6-dehydro-kavain (C3), a mixture of kavain and yagonin (C4), yagonin (C5) and dihydro-5,6-dehydrokavain, 7,8-dihydrokavain, dihydromethysticin and methysticin (C6). The amounts of 5-hydroxy-4′,7-dimethoxyflavanone, matteucinol, 5,6-dehydrokavain and yangonin were 0.76, 2.50, 2.75 and 2.09 mg/g dry weight (DW), respectively. The two flavanones C1 and C2 exhibited the strongest inhibition on shoot elongation (IC50 = 120.22 and 248.03 µg/mL, respectively), whilst the two kavalactone mixtures C4 and C6 showed the highest suppression on root growth of R. sativus (IC50 = 7.70 and 15.67 µg/mL, respectively). This study was the first to report the purification and inhibitory activities of the two flavanones 5-hydroxy-4′,7-dimethoxyflavanone and matteucinol in P. methysticum root. The isolated constituents from P. methysticum root including the flavanones C1 and C2 and the mixtures C4 and C6 may possess distinct modes of action on plant growth. Findings of this study highlighted that the combinations of hexane-ethyl acetate by 9:1 and 8:2 ratios successfully purified flavanones and kavalactones in P. methysticum root.

This study isolated, determined, and quantified plant growth inhibitors in Japanese chestnut (Castanea crenata Sieb. et Zucc), a deciduous species native to Japan and Korea. In laboratory assays, C. crenata leaves showed strong inhibition on germination and seedling growth of Echinochloa crus-galli (barnyardgrass), Lactuca sativa (lettuce), and Raphanus sativus (radish). Laboratory and greenhouse trials showed that leaves of C. crenata appeared as a promising material to manage weeds, especially the dicot weeds. By GC-MS and HPLC analyses, gallic, protocatechuic, p-hydroxybenzoic, caffeic, ferulic, ellagic, and cinnamic acids were identified and quantified, of which ellagic acid was present in the highest quantity (2.36 mg/g dried leaves). By column chromatography and spectral data (1H- and 13C-NMR, IR, and LC-MS) analysis, a compound identified as 2α,3β,7β,23-tetrahydroxyurs-12-ene-28-oic acid (1) was purified from the methanolic leaf extract of C. crenata (0.93 mg/g dried leaves). This constituent showed potent inhibition on growth of E. crus-galli, a problematic weed in agricultural practice. The inhibition of the compound 1 (IC50 = 2.62 and 0.41 mM) was >5 fold greater than that of p-hydroxybenzoic acid (IC50 = 15.33 and 2.11 mM) on shoot and root growth of E. crus-galli, respectively. Results suggest that the isolated the compound 1 has potential to develop natural herbicides to manage E. crus-galli. This study is the first to isolate and identify 2α,3β,7β,23-tetrahydroxyurs-12-ene-28-oic acid in a plant and report its plant growth inhibitory potential.

This research was conducted to exploit the waste of used plant parts from the widely marketed moth orchid cultivar (Phalaenopsis Sogo Yukidian “V3”). Various extracts of roots, stems, and leaves were evaluated for total phenolics, total flavonoids, and antioxidant capacity. The bound extract from stems contained the highest total phenolics (5.092 ± 0.739 mg GAE (gallic acid equivalent)/g DW (dry weight)). The maximum total flavonoids (2.218 ± 0.021 mg RE (rutin equivalent)/g DW) were found in the hexane extract of leaves. Ethyl acetate extract from roots showed the greatest antioxidant activity compared to other extracts. Of these extracts, the IC50 values of these samples were 0.070 mg/mL, and 0.450 mg/mL in a free radical 1,-diphenyl-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) assay and reducing power method, respectively. The lipid peroxidation inhibition (LPI) was found to be 94.2% using the β-carotene bleaching method. Five phenolic compounds including caffeic acid, syringic acid, vanillin, ellagic acid, and cinnamic acid were quantified by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). It is suggested that the roots of the hybrid Phalaenopsis Sogo Yukidian “V3” cultivar may be exploited as an effective source of antioxidants.

The development of hole-collecting materials is indispensable to improving the performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). To date, several anchorable molecules have been reported as effective hole-collecting monolayer (HCM) materials for p-i-n PSCs. However, their structures are limited to well-known electron-donating skeletons, such as carbazole, triarylamine, etc. In this work, we developed a series of squaraine derivatives that have a π-conjugated core composed of a squaric acid moiety connected to an indoline moiety. Thanks to the polar carbonyl group of squaric acid, all of the molecules were found to form hydrophilic monolayers after being chemisorbed on transparent conducting oxide surfaces, which is beneficial for the subsequent deposition of the perovskite layer. The effect of the substituents on the squaric acid moiety and the anchoring groups connected to the indoline moiety on the molecular electronic structure as well as the solar cell device's performance was elucidated. The p-i-n PSC devices fabricated by using these squaraine derivatives as hole-collecting monolayer materials exhibited high power conversion efficiencies of up to 22.1%, together with good stability. This work highlights the potential of a simple squaric acid skeleton as the building block for hole-collecting monolayer materials to realize high-efficiency and cost-effective PSCs.

High-performance and cost-effective hole-collecting materials (HCMs) are indispensable for commercially viable perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, we report an anchorable HCM composed of a triazatruxene core connected with three alkyl carboxylic acid groups ( 3CATAT-C3 ). In contrast to the phosphonic acid-containing tripodal analog ( 3PATAT-C3 ), 3CATAT-C3 molecules can form a hydrophilic monolayer on a transparent conducting oxide surface, which is beneficial for subsequent perovskite film deposition in the traditional layer-by-layer fabrication process. More importantly, the larger diffusion coefficient and higher surface energy make 3CATAT-C3 suitable for the simplified, cost-effective one-step co-deposition process in which 3CATAT-C3 was directly added as part of the perovskite precursor solution. 3CATAT-C3 is predominantly located at the perovskite bottom surface after spin-coating the mixed precursor solution, facilitating charge extraction. Devices with 3CATAT-C3 fabricated by this co-deposition method exhibit superior performance with a champion power conversion efficiency of over 23%. The unencapsulated devices showed good operational stability (retaining 90% of the initial output after 100 h), thermal durability (retaining 95% of the initial value after heating at 105 °C under air), and excellent storage stability (showing no drop in performance over 8000 h). Based on the results of time-of-flight secondary-ion mass spectroscopy (ToF-SIMS) and diffusion order nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (DOSY), we elucidated the effect of anchoring groups on the performance of the tripodal HCMs in PSCs as well as the mechanism of the co-deposition fabrication process. Our findings provide valuable insights for the molecular design of multifunctional hole-collecting materials, further advancing the performance of perovskite solar cells.

The development of efficient electron-collecting monolayer materials is desired to lower manufacturing costs and improve the performance of regular (negative-intrinsic-positive, n-i-p) type perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Here, we designed and synthesized four electron-collecting monolayer materials based on thiazolidinone skeletons, with different lowest-unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) levels (rhodanine or thiazolidinedione) and different anchoring groups to the transparent electrode (phosphonic acid or carboxylic acid). These molecules, when adsorbed on indium tin oxide (ITO) substrates, lower the work function of ITO, decreasing the energy barrier for electron extraction at the ITO/perovskite interface and improving the device performance. Multijunction photovoltaics (PVs) are gaining prominence owing to their superior capability of achieving power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) beyond the radiative limit of single-junction cells 1-8 , where improving narrow bandgap tin-lead perovskites is critical for thin-film devices 9 . With a focus on understanding the chemistry of tin-lead perovskite precursor solutions, we herein find that Sn(II) species dominate interactions with precursors and additives and uncover the exclusive role of carboxylic acid in regulating solution colloidal properties and film crystallisation, and ammonium in improving film optoelectronic properties. Materials that combine these two function groups, amino acid salts, considerably improve the semiconducting quality and homogeneity of perovskite films, surpassing the effect of the individual functional groups when introduced as part of separate molecules. Our enhanced tin-lead perovskite layer allows us to fabricate solar cells with PCEs of 23.9, 29.7 (certified 29.26%), and 28.7% for single-, double-, and triple-junction devices, respectively. Our 1-cm 2 triple-junction devices show PCEs of 28.4% (certified 27.28%). Encapsulated triple-junction cells maintain 80% of their initial efficiencies after 860 h maximum power point tracking in ambient. We further fabricate quadruple-junction devices and obtain PCEs of 27.9% with the highest open-circuit voltage of 4.94 V. This work establishes a new benchmark for multijunction PVs., (© 2024. Hole-collecting monolayers have greatly advanced the development of positive-intrinsic-negative perovskite solar cells (p-i-n PSCs). To date, however, most of the anchoring groups in the reported monolayer materials are designed to bind to the transparent conductive oxide (TCO) surface, resulting in less availability for other functions such as tuning the wettability of the monolayer surface. In this work, we developed two anchorable molecules, 4PATTI-C3 and 4PATTI-C4, by employing a saddle-like indole-fused cyclooctatetraene as a π-core with four phosphonic acid anchoring groups linked through propyl or butyl chains. Both molecules form monolayers on TCO substrates. Thanks to the saddle shape of a cyclooctatetraene skeleton, two of the four phosphonic acid anchoring groups were found to point upward, resulting in hydrophilic surfaces. Compared to the devices using 4PATTI-C4 as the hole-collecting monolayer, 4PATTI-C3-based devices exhibit a faster hole-collection process, leading to higher power conversion efficiencies of up to 21.7 % and 21.4 % for a mini-cell (0.1 cm 2 ) and a mini-module (1.62 cm 2 ), respectively, together with good operational stability. Two decades ago, Gaston and O'Neill (2004) deliberated on why automated species identification had not become widely employed. We no longer have to wonder: This AI-based technology is here, embedded in numerous web and mobile apps used by large audiences interested in nature. Now that automated species identification tools are available, popular, and efficient, it is time to look at how the apps are developed, what they promise, and how users appraise them. Delving into the automated species identification apps landscape, we found that free and paid apps differ fundamentally in presentation, experience, and the use of biodiversity and personal data. However, these two business models are deeply intertwined. Going forward, although big tech companies will eventually take over the landscape, citizen science programs will likely continue to have their own identification tools because of their specific purpose and their ability to create a strong sense of belonging among naturalist communities., (© The Author(s) 2024. An open-cage bis[60]fulleroid (OC) was applied as an electron transport material (ETM) in tin (Sn) halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs). Due to the reduced offset between the energy levels of Sn-based perovskites and ETMs, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of Sn-based PSCs with OC reached 9.6% with an open-circuit voltage ( V OC ) of 0.72 V. Additionally, OC exhibited superior thermal stability and provided 75% of the material without decomposition after vacuum deposition. The PSC using vacuum-deposited OC as the ETM could afford a PCE of 7.6%, which is a big leap forward compared with previous results using vacuum-deposited fullerene derivatives as ETMs.

A novel 9,9'-spirobifluorene derivative bearing thermally cross-linkable vinyl groups ( V1382 ) was developed as a hole-transporting material for perovskite solar cells (PSCs). After thermal cross-linking, a smooth and solvent-resistant three-dimensional (3D) polymeric network is formed such that orthogonal solvents are no longer needed to process subsequent layers. Copolymerizing V1382 with 4,4'-thiobisbenzenethiol (dithiol) lowers the cross-linking temperature to 103 °C via the facile thiol-ene "click" reaction. The effectiveness of the cross-linked V1382 /dithiol was demonstrated both as a hole-transporting material in p-i-n and as an interlayer between the perovskite and the hole-transporting layer in n-i-p PSC devices. Both devices exhibit better power conversion efficiencies and operational stability than devices using conventional PTAA or Spiro-OMeTAD hole-transporting materials.

The phosphole ring is known as a useful building block for constructing π-conjugated organic materials. Here, we report ladder-type benzophospholo[3,2- b ]indole (BPI) derivatives where the phosphole and the pyrrole rings are directly fused. Compounds 8a - 8d with different aryl groups on the phosphorous center were successfully synthesized, and the solid-state structure of 8a was confirmed using X-ray crystallographic analysis. The BPIs exhibit relatively high fluorescence quantum yield (Φ 0.50-0.72) and demonstrate a larger Stokes shift compared with a series of benzophospholo[3,2- b ]benzoheteroles. The benzophospholo[3,2- b ]carbazole derivative 9 , which possesses a benzene ring between the phosphole and the pyrrole rings of the BPI, was also synthesized, and its solid-state structure was confirmed using X-ray crystallographic analysis. Compound 9 was found to show a smaller Stokes shift compared with the BPI.

An abnormal chromosome number, or aneuploidy, underlies developmental disorders and is a common feature of cancer, with different cancer types exhibiting distinct patterns of chromosomal gains and losses. To understand how specific aneuploidies emerge in certain tissues and how they contribute to disease development, various methods have been developed to alter the karyotype of mammalian cells and mice. In this review, we provide an overview of both classic and novel strategies for inducing or selecting specific chromosomal gains and losses in human and murine cell systems. We highlight how these customized aneuploidy models helped expanding our knowledge of the consequences of specific aneuploidies to (cancer) cell physiology., (© 2023. The Author(s).)

Organic dyes with strong absorption in the near-infrared (NIR) region are potentially useful in medical applications, such as tumor imaging and photothermal therapy. In this work, new NIR dyes combining BAr 2 -bridged azafulvene dimer acceptors with diarylaminothienyl donors in a donor-acceptor-donor configuration were synthesized. Surprisingly, it was found that in these molecules the BAr 2 -bridged azafulvene acceptor adopts a 5-membered, rather than 6-membered ring structure. The influence of the aryl substituents on the HOMO and LUMO energy levels of the dye compounds was assessed from electrochemical and optical measurements. Strong electron-withdrawing fluorinated substituents (Ar=C 6 F 5 , 3,5-(CF 3 ) 2 C 6 H 3 ) lowered the HOMO energy while preserving the small HOMO-LUMO energy gap, resulting in promising NIR dye molecules that combine strong absorption bands centered around 900 nm with good photostability., (© 2023 Wiley-VCH GmbH.)

Various cancer types exhibit characteristic and recurrent aneuploidy patterns. The origins of these cancer type-specific karyotypes are still unknown, partly because introducing or eliminating specific chromosomes in human cells still poses a challenge. Here, we describe a novel strategy to induce mis-segregation of specific chromosomes in different human cell types. We employed Tet repressor or nuclease-dead Cas9 to link a microtubule minus-end-directed kinesin (Kinesin14VIb) from Physcomitrella patens to integrated Tet operon repeats and chromosome-specific endogenous repeats, respectively. By live- and fixed-cell imaging, we observed poleward movement of the targeted loci during (pro)metaphase. Kinesin14VIb-mediated pulling forces on the targeted chromosome were counteracted by forces from kinetochore-attached microtubules. This tug-of-war resulted in chromosome-specific segregation errors during anaphase and revealed that spindle forces can heavily stretch chromosomal arms. By single-cell whole-genome sequencing, we established that kinesin-induced targeted mis-segregations predominantly result in chromosomal arm aneuploidies after a single cell division. Hole-collecting monolayers have drawn attention in perovskite solar cell research due to their ease of processing, high performance, and good durability. Since molecules in the hole-collecting monolayer are typically composed of functionalized π-conjugated structures, hole extraction is expected to be more efficient when the π-cores are oriented face-on with respect to the adjacent surfaces. However, strategies for reliably controlling the molecular orientation in monolayers remain elusive. In this work, multiple phosphonic acid anchoring groups were used to control the molecular orientation of a series of triazatruxene derivatives chemisorbed on a transparent conducting oxide electrode surface. Using infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy and metastable atom electron spectroscopy, we found that multipodal derivatives align face-on to the electrode surface, while the monopodal counterpart adopts a more tilted configuration. The face-on orientation was found to facilitate hole extraction, leading to inverted perovskite solar cells with enhanced stability and high-power conversion efficiencies up to 23.0%.

Interfaces in thin-film photovoltaics play a pivotal role in determining device efficiency and longevity. In this work, the top surface treatment of mixed tin-lead (≈1.26 eV) halide perovskite films for p-i-n solar cells is studied. Charge extraction is promoted by treating the perovskite surface with piperazine. This compound reacts with the organic cations at the perovskite surface, modifying the surface structure and tuning the interfacial energy level alignment. In addition, the combined treatment with C 60 pyrrolidine tris-acid (CPTA) reduces hysteresis and leads to efficiencies up to 22.7%, with open-circuit voltage values reaching 0.90 V, ≈92% of the radiative limit for the bandgap of this material. The modified cells also show superior stability, with unencapsulated cells retaining 96% of their initial efficiency after >2000 h of storage in N 2 and encapsulated cells retaining 90% efficiency after >450 h of storage in air. Intriguingly, CPTA preferentially binds to Sn 2+ sites at film surface over Pb 2+ due to the energetically favored exposure of the former, according to first-principles calculations. Perovskite interfaces critically influence the final performance of the photovoltaic devices. Optimizing them by reducing the defect densities or improving the contact with the charge transporting material is key to further enhance the efficiency and stability of perovskite solar cells. Inverted (p-i-n) devices can particularly benefit here, as evident from various successful attempts. However, every reported strategy is adapted to specific cell structures and compositions, affecting their robustness and applicability by other researchers. In this work, we present the universality of perovskite top surface post-treatment with ethylenediammonium diiodide (EDAI 2 ) for p-i-n devices. To prove it, we compare devices bearing perovskite films of different composition, i.e., Sn-, Pb-, and mixed Sn-Pb-based devices, achieving efficiencies of up to 11.4, 22.0, and 22.9%, respectively. A careful optimization of the EDAI 2 thickness indicates a different tolerance for Pb- and Sn-based devices. The main benefit of this treatment is evident in the open-circuit voltage, with enhancements of up to 200 mV for some compositions. In addition, we prove that this treatment can be successfully applied by both wet (spin-coating) and dry (thermal evaporation) methods, regardless of the composition. The versatility of this treatment makes it highly appealing for industrial application, as it can be easily adapted to specific processing requirements. We present a detailed experimental protocol, aiming to provide the community with an easy, universal perovskite post-treatment method for reliably improving the device efficiency, highlighting the potential of interfaces for the field.

Chromosome segregation errors during cell divisions generate aneuploidies and micronuclei, which can undergo extensive chromosomal rearrangements such as chromothripsis 1-5 . Selective pressures then shape distinct aneuploidy and rearrangement patterns-for example, in cancer 6,7 -but it is unknown whether initial biases in segregation errors and micronucleation exist for particular chromosomes. Using single-cell DNA sequencing 8 after an error-prone mitosis in untransformed, diploid cell lines and organoids, we show that chromosomes have different segregation error frequencies that result in non-random aneuploidy landscapes. Isolation and sequencing of single micronuclei from these cells showed that mis-segregating chromosomes frequently also preferentially become entrapped in micronuclei. A similar bias was found in naturally occurring micronuclei of two cancer cell lines. We find that segregation error frequencies of individual chromosomes correlate with their location in the interphase nucleus, and show that this is highest for peripheral chromosomes behind spindle poles. Randomization of chromosome positions, Cas9-mediated live tracking and forced repositioning of individual chromosomes showed that a greater distance from the nuclear centre directly increases the propensity to mis-segregate. Accordingly, chromothripsis in cancer genomes 9 and aneuploidies in early development 10 occur more frequently for larger chromosomes, which are preferentially located near the nuclear periphery. Our findings reveal a direct link between nuclear chromosome positions, segregation error frequencies and micronucleus content, with implications for our understanding of tumour genome evolution and the origins of specific aneuploidies during development., (© 2022. Mixed lead-tin (Pb-Sn) halide perovskites with optimum band gaps near 1.3 eV are promising candidates for next-generation solar cells. However, the performance of solar cells fabricated with Pb-Sn perovskites is restricted by the facile oxidation of Sn(ii) to Sn(iv), which induces self-doping. Maltol, a naturally occurring flavor enhancer and strong metal binding agent, was found to effectively suppress Sn(iv) formation and passivate defects in mixed Pb-Sn perovskite films. When used in combination with Sn(iv) scavenging, the maltol surface treatment led to high-quality perovskite films which showed enhanced photoluminescence intensities and charge carrier lifetimes in excess of 7 μs. The scavenging and surface treatments resulted in highly reproducible solar cell devices, with photoconversion efficiencies of up to 21.4% under AM1.5G illumination., Competing Interests: There are no conflicts to declare., (This journal is © The Royal Society of Chemistry.)

The toxicity of lead perovskite hampers the commercialization of perovskite-based photovoltaics. While tin perovskite is a promising alternative, the facile oxidation of tin(II) to tin(IV) causes a high density of defects, resulting in lower solar cell efficiencies. Here, we show that tin(0) nanoparticles in the precursor solution can scavenge tin(IV) impurities, and demonstrate that this treatment leads to effectively tin(IV)-free perovskite films with strong photoluminescence and prolonged decay lifetimes. These nanoparticles are generated by the selective reaction of a dihydropyrazine derivative with the tin(II) fluoride additive already present in the precursor solution. Using this nanoparticle treatment, the power conversion efficiency of tin-based solar cells reaches 11.5%, with an open-circuit voltage of 0.76 V. Our nanoparticle treatment is a simple and broadly effective method that improves the purity and electrical performance of tin perovskite films.

Aurora B kinase is essential for faithful chromosome segregation during mitosis. During (pro)metaphase, Aurora B is concentrated at the inner centromere by the kinases Haspin and Bub1. However, how Haspin and Bub1 collaborate to control Aurora B activity at centromeres remains unclear. Here, we show that either Haspin or Bub1 activity is sufficient to recruit Aurora B to a distinct chromosomal locus. Moreover, we identified a small, Bub1 kinase-dependent Aurora B pool that supported faithful chromosome segregation in otherwise unchallenged cells. Joined inhibition of Haspin and Bub1 activities fully abolished Aurora B accumulation at centromeres. While this impaired the correction of erroneous KT-MT attachments, it did not compromise the mitotic checkpoint, nor the phosphorylation of the Aurora B kinetochore substrates Hec1, Dsn1, and Knl1. This suggests that Aurora B substrates at the kinetochore are not phosphorylated by centromere-localized pools of Aurora B, and calls for a reevaluation of the current spatial models for how tension affects Aurora B-dependent kinetochore phosphorylation., (© 2020 Hadders et al.)

A series of two-dimensionally expanded azulene-core-based π systems have been synthesized with different alkyl chain lengths in the alkoxy moieties connected to the partially oxygen-bridged triarylamine skeletons. The thermal, photophysical, and electronic properties of each compound were evaluated to determine the influence of the alkyl chain length on their effectiveness as hole-transporting materials (HTMs) in perovskite solar cells (PSCs). All the synthesized molecules showed promising material properties, including high solubility, the formation of flat and amorphous films, and optimal alignment of energy levels with perovskites. In particular, the derivatives with methyl and n-butyl in the side chains retained amorphous stability up to 233 and 159 °C, respectively. Such short alkoxy chains also resulted in improved electrical device properties. The PSC device fabricated with the HTM with n-butyl side chains showed the best performance with a power conversion efficiency of 18.9 %, which compares favorably with that of spiro-OMeTAD-based PSCs (spiro-OMeTAD=2,2',7,7'-tetrakis[N,N-bis(p-methoxyphenyl)amino]-9,9'-spirobifluorene)., (© 2019 Wiley-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. The CRISPR/Cas9 system is a highly effective tool for genome editing. Key to robust genome editing is the efficient delivery of the CRISPR/Cas9 machinery. Viral delivery systems are efficient vehicles for the transduction of foreign genes but commonly used viral vectors suffer from a limited capacity in the genetic information they can carry. Baculovirus however is capable of carrying large exogenous DNA fragments. Here we investigate the use of baculoviral vectors as a delivery vehicle for CRISPR/Cas9 based genome-editing tools. We demonstrate transduction of a panel of cell lines with Cas9 and an sgRNA sequence, which results in efficient knockout of all four targeted subunits of the chromosomal passenger complex (CPC). We further show that introduction of a homology directed repair template into the same CRISPR/Cas9 baculovirus facilitates introduction of specific point mutations and endogenous gene tags. Tagging of the CPC recruitment factor Haspin with the fluorescent reporter YFP allowed us to study its native localization as well as recruitment to the cohesin subunit Pds5B.

Ladder-type π-conjugated compounds containing a benzo[2,1-b:3,4-b']difuran skeleton, such as dibenzo[d,d']benzo[2,1-b:3,4-b']difuran (syn-DBBDF) and dinaphtho[2,3-d:2',3'-d']benzo[2,1-b:3,4-b']difuran (syn-DNBDF) were synthesized. Their photophysical and electrochemical properties were revealed by UV-vis absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. Organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) were fabricated with these compounds as organic semiconductors, and their semiconducting properties were evaluated. OFETs with syn-DBBDF and syn-DNBDF showed typical p-type characteristics with hole mobilities of <1.5 × 10(-3) cm(2)·V(-1)·s(-1) and <1.0 × 10(-1) cm(2)·V(-1)·s(-1), respectively.

Two kinds of ladder-type π-conjugated compounds, benzofuro[3,2-b]indoles (BFIs) and indolo[3,2-b]indoles (IIs), were successfully synthesized using palladium-catalyzed double N-arylation of anilines with the corresponding dihalobiaryls. Photophysical properties were evaluated by UV-vis and photoluminescence spectroscopies and theoretical calculations. BFI derivatives showed higher quantum yields (33-39%) than the II derivative (29%). The absorption bands of the II derivative were more red-shifted compared to BFI derivatives.
