It raises questions about the impact of lard on the health and the differences in individual responses. Therefore, we developed a model of mice fed with high fat (HF) from lard in 130 days. The weight of the mice was measured every two days. Glucose tolerance test and insulin tolerance tests were performed at 70 days and 130 days of experiment. At the end of the study, the fat tissue was collected to check the weight, and a blood sample was collected to check the blood lipids and liver enzymes. Surprisingly, mice responded variously to the HF by being classified into two groups, one group had significantly high gained weight (HG&#95;HF) versus the mice fed a standard diet (STD) (p < 0.001), and another group (LG&#95;HF) has not difference in body weight compared to the STD groups. This phenomenon in body weight is directly reflected by the white fat accumulation, but not by brown fat. Eating HF from lard for a long time can disrupt glucose tolerance and cause dyslipidemia in mice, even in the LG&#95;HF group, but can not disrupt insulin tolerance and cause liver enzyme disorders. In summary, our findings are a wake-up call for many cases where eating HF from lard does not gain weight and not increase the white fat storage, but still has the potential to cause adverse health effects. A key strategy to mitigate postprandial hyperglycemia involves inhibiting α-amylases, which commence the starch digestion process in the gut. This study examined the inhibitory effects of resveratrol and stilbenoid tetramers, vaticanol B, (-)-hopeaphenol, and vatalbinoside A on human salivary and pancreatic α-amylases experimentally and through molecular docking studies. Vaticanol B demonstrated the most potent inhibition with IC 50 values of 5.3 ± 0.3 μM for salivary and 6.1 ± 0.5 μM for pancreatic α-amylase (compared to acarbose with IC 50 values of 1.2 ± 0.1 μM and 0.5 ± 0.0 μM, respectively). Kinetic analysis suggested a competitive inhibition mode for vaticanol B. Resveratrol and vatalbinoside A were poor inhibitors of human α-amylases, while (-)-hopeaphenol exhibited moderate inhibition. Molecular docking supported the inhibition data, and several aspects of the structural configurations explained the stronger inhibition exerted by vaticanol B. Overall, vaticanol B shows promise as a natural alternative to acarbose for inhibiting α-amylase.

Based on bee foraging behaviour, the Bees Algorithm (BA) is an optimisation metaheuristic algorithm which has found many applications in both the continuous and combinatorial domains. The original version of the Bees Algorithm has six user-selected parameters: the number of scout bees, the number of high-performing bees, the number of top-performing or "elite" bees, the number of forager bees following the elite bees, the number of forager bees recruited by the other high-performing bees, and the neighbourhood size. These parameters must be chosen with due care, as their values can impact the algorithm's performance, particularly when the problem is complex. However, determining the optimum values for those parameters can be time-consuming for users who are not familiar with the algorithm. This paper presents BA 1 , a Bees Algorithm with just one parameter. BA 1 eliminates the need to specify the numbers of high-performing and elite bees and other associated parameters. Instead, it uses incremental k-means clustering to divide the scout bees into groups. By reducing the required number of parameters, BA 1 simplifies the tuning process and increases efficiency. BA 1 has been evaluated on 23 benchmark functions in the continuous domain, followed by 12 problems from the TSPLIB in the combinatorial domain. The results show good performance against popular nature-inspired optimisation algorithms on the problems tested.

The MiniMUGA genotyping array is a popular tool for genetic quality control of laboratory mice and genotyping samples from most experimental crosses involving laboratory strains, particularly for reduced complexity crosses. The content of the production version of the MiniMUGA array is fixed; however, there is the opportunity to improve the array's performance and the associated report's usefulness by leveraging thousands of samples genotyped since the initial description of MiniMUGA. Here, we report our efforts to update and improve marker annotation, increase the number and the reliability of the consensus genotypes for classical inbred strains and substrains, and increase the number of constructs reliably detected with MiniMUGA. In addition, we have implemented key changes in the informatics pipeline to identify and quantify the contribution of specific genetic backgrounds to the makeup of a given sample, remove arbitrary thresholds, include the Y Chromosome and mitochondrial genome in the ideogram, and improve robust detection of the presence of commercially available substrains based on diagnostic alleles. Finally, we have updated the layout of the report to simplify the interpretation and completeness of the analysis and added a section summarizing the ideogram in table format. Background: Clinical trials and registry studies are essential for advancing research and developing novel treatments. However, these studies rely on manual entry of thousands of variables for each patient. Repurposing real-world data can significantly simplify the data collection, reduce transcription errors, and make the data entry process more efficient, consistent, and cost-effective., Methods: We developed an open-source computational pipeline to collect laboratory and medication information from the electronic health record (EHR) data and populate case report forms. The pipeline was developed and validated with data from two independent pediatric hospitals in the US as part of the Long-terM OUtcomes after Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome In Children (MUSIC) study. Our pipeline allowed the completion of two of the most time-consuming forms. We compared automatically extracted results with manually entered values in one hospital and applied the pipeline to a second hospital, where the output served as the primary data source for case report forms., Findings: We extracted and populated 51,845 laboratory and 4913 medication values for 159 patients in two hospitals participating in a prospective pediatric study. We evaluated pipeline performance against data for 104 patients manually entered by clinicians in one of the hospitals. The highest concordance was found during patient hospitalization, with 91.59% of the automatically extracted laboratory and medication values corresponding with the manually entered values. In addition to the successfully populated values, we identified an additional 13,396 laboratory and 567 medication values of interest for the study., Interpretation: The automatic data entry of laboratory and medication values during admission is feasible and has a high concordance with the manually entered data. Importance: Most research to understand postacute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection (PASC), or long COVID, has focused on adults, with less known about this complex condition in children. Research is needed to characterize pediatric PASC to enable studies of underlying mechanisms that will guide future treatment., Objective: To identify the most common prolonged symptoms experienced by children (aged 6 to 17 years) after SARS-CoV-2 infection, how these symptoms differ by age (school-age [6-11 years] vs adolescents [12-17 years]), how they cluster into distinct phenotypes, and what symptoms in combination could be used as an empirically derived index to assist researchers to study the likely presence of PASC., Design, Setting, and Participants: Multicenter longitudinal observational cohort study with participants recruited from more than 60 US health care and community settings between March 2022 and December 2023, including school-age children and adolescents with and without SARS-CoV-2 infection history., Exposure: SARS-CoV-2 infection., Main Outcomes and Measures: PASC and 89 prolonged symptoms across 9 symptom domains., Results: A total of 898 school-age children (751 with previous SARS-CoV-2 infection [referred to as infected] and 147 without [referred to as uninfected]; mean age, 8.6 years; 49% female; 11% were Black or African American, 34% were Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish, and 60% were White) and 4469 adolescents (3109 infected and 1360 uninfected; mean age, 14.8 years; 48% female; 13% were Black or African American, 21% were Hispanic, Latino, or Spanish, and 73% were White) were included. Median time between first infection and symptom survey was 506 days for school-age children and 556 days for adolescents. In models adjusted for sex and race and ethnicity, 14 symptoms in both school-age children and adolescents were more common in those with SARS-CoV-2 infection history compared with those without infection history, with 4 additional symptoms in school-age children only and 3 in adolescents only. These symptoms affected almost every organ system. Combinations of symptoms most associated with infection history were identified to form a PASC research index for each age group; these indices correlated with poorer overall health and quality of life. The index emphasizes neurocognitive, pain, and gastrointestinal symptoms in school-age children but change or loss in smell or taste, pain, and fatigue/malaise-related symptoms in adolescents. Clustering analyses identified 4 PASC symptom phenotypes in school-age children and 3 in adolescents., Conclusions and Relevance: This study developed research indices for characterizing PASC in children and adolescents. Symptom patterns were similar but distinguishable between the 2 groups, highlighting the importance of characterizing PASC separately for these age ranges.

Parkinson's disease is highly heterogeneous across disease symptoms, clinical manifestations and progression trajectories, hampering the identification of therapeutic targets. Despite knowledge gleaned from genetics analysis, dysregulated proteome mechanisms stemming from genetic aberrations remain underexplored. In this study, we develop a three-phase system-level proteogenomic analytical framework to characterize disease-associated proteins and dysregulated mechanisms. Proteogenomic analysis identified 577 proteins that enrich for Parkinson's disease-related pathways, such as cytokine receptor interactions and lysosomal function. Converging lines of evidence identified nine proteins, including LGALS3, CSNK2A1, SMPD3, STX4, APOA2, PAFAH1B3, LDLR, HSPB1, BRK1, with potential roles in disease pathogenesis. This study leverages the largest population-scale proteomics dataset, the UK Biobank Pharma Proteomics Project, to characterize genetically-driven protein disturbances associated with Parkinson's disease. Although the use of the tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) has been proved that it can save live in a cancer treatment, the currently used drugs bring in many undesirable side-effects. Therefore, the search for new drugs and an evaluation of their efficiency are intensively carried out. Recently, a series of eighteen imidazole[1,5-a]pyridine derivatives were synthetized by us, and preliminary analyses pointed out their potential to be an important platform for pharmaceutical development owing to their promising actions as anticancer agents and enzyme (kinase, HIV-protease,…) inhibitors. In the present theoretical study, we further analyzed their efficiency in using a realistic scenario of computational drug design. Our protocol has been developed to not only observe the atomistic interaction between the EGFR protein and our 18 novel compounds using both umbrella sampling and steered molecular dynamics simulations, but also determine their absolute binding free energies. Calculated properties of the 18 novel compounds were in detail compared with those of two known drugs, erlotinib and osimertinib, currently used in cancer treatment. To ensure that an external force can break the interaction between a protein and a ligand, the steered molecular dynamics simulation requires a harmonic restrained potential applied to the protein backbone. A usual practice is that all or a certain number of protein's heavy atoms or Cα atoms are fixed, being restrained by a small force. This present study reveals that while fixing both either all heavy atoms and or all Cα atoms is not a good approach, while fixing a too small number of few atoms sometimes cannot prevent the protein from rotating under the influence of the bulk water layer, and the pulled molecule may smack into the wall of the active site. We found that restraining the Cα atoms under certain conditions is more relevant. Thus, we would propose an alternative solution in which only the Cα atoms of the protein at a distance larger than 1.2 nm from the ligand are restrained. Importance: The prevalence, pathophysiology, and long-term outcomes of COVID-19 (post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 [PASC] or "Long COVID") in children and young adults remain unknown. Studies must address the urgent need to define PASC, its mechanisms, and potential treatment targets in children and young adults., Observations: We describe the protocol for the Pediatric Observational Cohort Study of the NIH's REsearching COVID to Enhance Recovery (RECOVER) Initiative. RECOVER-Pediatrics is an observational meta-cohort study of caregiver-child pairs (birth through 17 years) and young adults (18 through 25 years), recruited from more than 100 sites across the US. This report focuses on two of four cohorts that comprise RECOVER-Pediatrics: 1) a de novo RECOVER prospective cohort of children and young adults with and without previous or current infection; and 2) an extant cohort derived from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) study (n = 10,000). The de novo cohort incorporates three tiers of data collection: 1) remote baseline assessments (Tier 1, n = 6000); 2) longitudinal follow-up for up to 4 years (Tier 2, n = 6000); and 3) a subset of participants, primarily the most severely affected by PASC, who will undergo deep phenotyping to explore PASC pathophysiology (Tier 3, n = 600). Youth enrolled in the ABCD study participate in Tier 1. The pediatric protocol was developed as a collaborative partnership of investigators, patients, researchers, clinicians, community partners, and federal partners, intentionally promoting inclusivity and diversity. Sugarcane bagasse is one of the most common Vietnamese agricultural waste, which possesses a large percentage of cellulose, making it an abundant and environmentally friendly source for the fabrication of cellulose carbon aerogel. Herein, waste sugarcane bagasse was used to synthesize cellulose aerogel using different crosslinking agents such as urea, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and sodium alginate (SA). The 3D porous network of cellulose aerogels was constructed by intermolecular hydrogen bonding, which was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and nitrogen adsorption/desorption. Among the three cellulose aerogel samples, cellulose - SA aerogel (SB-CA-SA) has low density of 0.04 g m -3 and high porosity of 97.38%, leading to high surface area of 497.9 m 2  g -1 with 55.67% micropores of activated carbon aerogel (SB-ACCA-SA). The salt adsorption capacity was high (17.87 mg g -1 ), which can be further enhanced to 31.40 mg g -1 with the addition of CNT. Moreover, the desalination process using the SB-ACCA-SA-CNT electrode was stable even after 50 cycles. Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) commonly involves cardiac injury with both systolic and diastolic dysfunction. Left atrial strain (LAS) detects subclinical diastolic dysfunction in adults but is infrequently used in children. We evaluated LAS in MIS-C and the associations with systemic inflammation and cardiac injury. In this retrospective cohort study, LAS parameters [reservoir (LAS-r), conduit (LAS-cd), and contractile (LAS-ct)] obtained from admission echocardiograms of MIS-C patients were compared to healthy controls and between MIS-C patients with and without cardiac injury (BNP > 500 pg/ml or troponin-I > 0.04 ng/ml). Correlation and logistic regression analyses were performed to assess LAS associations with admission inflammatory and cardiac biomarkers. Reliability testing was performed. We identified 118 patients with MIS-C and 20 healthy controls. Median LAS parameters were reduced in MIS-C patients compared to controls (LAS-r: 31.8 vs. 43.1%, p < 0.001; LAS-cd: - 28.8 vs. - 34.5%, p = 0.006; LAS-ct: - 5.2 vs. - 9.3%, p < 0.001) and reduced in MIS-C patients with cardiac injury (n = 59) compared to no injury (n = 59) (LAS-r: 29.6 vs. 35.8%, p = 0.001; LAS-cd: - 26.5 vs. - 30.4%, p = 0.036; LAS-ct: - 4.6 vs. - 9.3%, p = 0.008). A discrete LAS-ct peak was absent in 65 (55%) MIS-C patients but present in all controls (p < 0.001). Procalcitonin correlated strongly with averaged E/e' (r = 0.55, p = 0.001). Moderate correlations were found for ESR and LAS-ct (r = - 0.41, p = 0.007) as well as BNP and LAS-r (r = - 0.39, p < 0.001) and LAS-ct (r = 0.31, p = 0.023). Troponin-I had only weak correlations. Intra-rater reliability was good for all LAS parameters, and inter-rater reliability was good to excellent for LAS-r, and fair for LAS-cd and LAS-ct. LAS analysis, particularly the absence of a LAS-ct peak, was reproducible and may be superior to conventional echocardiographic parameters for detecting diastolic dysfunction in MIS-C. Rice husk, rich carbon content, is an agricultural waste produced globally at an amount of 120 million tons annually, and it has high potential as a biorefinery feedstock. Herein, we investigated the feasibility of producing various products as D-psicose, bioethanol and lactic acid from rice husk (RH) through a biorefinery process. Alkali-hydrogen peroxide-acetic acid pretreatment of RH effectively removed lignin and silica, resulting in enzymatic hydrolysis yield of approximately 86.3% under optimal hydrolysis conditions. By using xylose isomerase as well as D-psicose-3-epimerase with borate, glucose present in the RH hydrolysate was converted into D-psicose with a 40.6% conversion yield in the presence of borate. Furthermore, bioethanol (85.4%) and lactic acid (92.5%) were successfully produced from the RH hydrolysate. Vaccinating young children against rotavirus (RV) is a promising preventive strategy against rotavirus gastroenteritis (RVGE). We evaluated the relative risk reduction of RVGE induced by universal vaccination in Vietnam through dynamic model analysis. We developed an age-stratified dynamic Vaccinated-Susceptible-Infectious-Recovered-Susceptible model to analyze RV transmission and assess vaccine effectiveness (VE). We assumed 3 different vaccine efficacies: 55%, 70%, and 85%. For model calibration, we used a database of patients under 5 years of age admitted to Ho Chi Minh No.1 Hospital with RVGE between January 2013 and December 2018. Assuming a vaccination rate of 95%, the number of RVGE hospitalizations after 5 years from universal RV vaccination decreased from 92,502 cases to 45,626 with 85% efficacy, to 54,576 cases with 70% efficacy, and to 63,209 cases with 55% efficacy. Additionally, RVGE hospitalizations after 10 years decreased from 177,950 to 89,517 with 85% efficacy and to 121,832 cases with 55% efficacy. The relative risk reductions of RVGE after 10 years were 49.7% with 85% efficacy, 40.6% with 70% efficacy, and 31.5% with 55% efficacy. The VE was 1.10 times (95% CI, 1.01-1.22) higher in the 4-months to 1-year-old age group than in the other age groups (P = 0.038), when applying 85% efficacy with 95% coverage. In conclusion, despite its relatively lower efficacy compared to high-income countries, RV vaccination remains an effective intervention in Southwestern Vietnam. It is well accepted that remanufacturing, the returning of a product that has reached the end of its service life to its original condition, is economically and environmentally beneficial. Robotizing disassembly can make remanufacturing even more cost-effective by removing a substantial proportion of the labour costs associated with dismantling end-of-life products for subsequent processing. As unplugging of press-fitted components is a common operation in disassembly, it is appropriate to investigate how it can be robotized. This paper discusses an unplugging technique, twist-and-pull or twisting-pulling, to reduce the axial frictional resistance during the unplugging process and enable a robot to perform it easily. Through theoretical modelling, simulations, and experimental analysis, the paper explores the interaction between twisting, pulling and axial friction reduction during unplugging. Corynebacterium glutamicum is a useful microbe that can be used for producing succinic acid under anaerobic conditions. In this study, we generated a knock-out mutant of the lactate dehydrogenase 1 gene (ΔldhA-6) and co-expressed the succinic acid transporter (Psod:SucE- ΔldhA) using the CRISPR-Cpf1 genome editing system. The highly efficient HPAC (hydrogen peroxide and acetic acid) pretreatment method was employed for the enzymatic hydrolysis of softwood (Pinus densiflora) and subsequently utilized for production of succinic acid. Upon evaluating a 1%-5% hydrolysate concentration range, optimal succinic acid production with the ΔldhA mutant was achieved at a 4% hydrolysate concentration. This resulted in 14.82 g L -1 succinic acid production over 6 h. No production of acetic acid and lactic acid was detected during the fermentation. The co-expression transformant, [Psod:SucE-ΔldhA] produced 17.70 g L -1 succinic acid in 6 h. In the fed-batch system, 39.67 g L -1 succinic acid was produced over 48 h. During the fermentation, the strain consumed 100% and 73% of glucose and xylose, respectively. The yield of succinic acid from the sugars consumed was approximately 0.77 g succinic acid/g sugars. Background: Patients with multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) and Kawasaki disease (KD) have overlapping clinical features. We compared demographics, clinical presentation, management, and outcomes of patients according to evidence of previous SARS-CoV-2 infection., Methods: The International Kawasaki Disease Registry (IKDR) enrolled KD and MIS-C patients from sites in North, Central, and South America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. Evidence of previous infection was defined as: Positive (household contact or positive polymerase chain reaction [PCR]/serology), Possible (suggestive clinical features of MIS-C and/or KD with negative PCR or serology but not both), Negative (negative PCR and serology and no known exposure), and Unknown (incomplete testing and no known exposure)., Results: Of 2345 enrolled patients SARS-CoV-2 status was Positive for 1541 (66%) patients, Possible for 89 (4%), Negative for 404 (17%) and Unknown for 311 (13%). Clinical outcomes varied significantly among the groups, with more patients in the Positive/Possible groups presenting with shock, having admission to intensive care, receiving inotropic support, and having longer hospital stays. Regarding cardiac abnormalities, patients in the Positive/Possible groups had a higher prevalence of left ventricular dysfunction, and patients in the Negative and Unknown groups had more severe coronary artery abnormalities., Conclusions: There appears to be a spectrum of clinical features from MIS-C to KD with a great deal of heterogeneity, and one primary differentiating factor is evidence for previous acute SARS-CoV-2 infection/exposure. Kawasaki disease (KD) and Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) associated with COVID-19 show clinical overlap and both lack definitive diagnostic testing, making differentiation challenging. We sought to determine how cardiac biomarkers might differentiate KD from MIS-C. The International Kawasaki Disease Registry enrolled contemporaneous KD and MIS-C pediatric patients from 42 sites from January 2020 through June 2022. The study population included 118 KD patients who met American Heart Association KD criteria and compared them to 946 MIS-C patients who met 2020 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention case definition. All included patients had at least one measurement of amino-terminal prohormone brain natriuretic peptide (NTproBNP) or cardiac troponin I (TnI), and echocardiography. Regression analyses were used to determine associations between cardiac biomarker levels, diagnosis, and cardiac involvement. Higher NTproBNP (≥ 1500 ng/L) and TnI (≥ 20 ng/L) at presentation were associated with MIS-C versus KD with specificity of 77 and 89%, respectively. Higher biomarker levels were associated with shock and intensive care unit admission; higher NTproBNP was associated with longer hospital length of stay. Lower left ventricular ejection fraction, more pronounced for MIS-C, was also associated with higher biomarker levels. Coronary artery involvement was not associated with either biomarker. Higher NTproBNP and TnI levels are suggestive of MIS-C versus KD and may be clinically useful in their differentiation. Background: Vietnam conducted the national Noncommunicable Disease Risk-Factor Surveillance (STEPs) surveys in the years 2010, 2015, and 2021. This study aims to use STEPs data to assess the burden of comorbidity between diabetes and hypertension, analyze trends over time, and identify factors associated with this comorbidity., Methods: The study extracted data for the population aged 25-64 years old from three STEPs surveys. Survey weight was used for all estimations of prevalence and 95% CI. Correlated factors with comorbidity were examined by a multivariate logistics model., Results: The prevalence of comorbidity in 2021 was about 3.92% among Vietnamese people aged 25-64. In the last 10 years, this prevalence has increased more than 8 times (from 0.44% to 3.92%). Sub-populations demonstrating the most significant changes included the male population, people living in urban areas, and older people. Significant factors correlated with comorbidity included demographic factors, body mass index (BMI), and clustering of 4 noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) behavioral risk factors (OR = 3.48, p < 0.05)., Conclusion: The high comorbidity between hypertension and diabetes underscores the imperative for integrated treatment and management approaches in Vietnam. Importance: Obesity may affect the clinical course of Kawasaki disease (KD) in children and multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) associated with COVID-19., Objective: To compare the prevalence of obesity and associations with clinical outcomes in patients with KD or MIS-C., Design, Setting, and Participants: In this cohort study, analysis of International Kawasaki Disease Registry (IKDR) data on contemporaneous patients was conducted between January 1, 2020, and July 31, 2022 (42 sites, 8 countries). Patients with MIS-C (defined by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention criteria) and patients with KD (defined by American Heart Association criteria) were included. Patients with KD who had evidence of a recent COVID-19 infection or missing or unknown COVID-19 status were excluded., Main Outcomes and Measures: Patient demographic characteristics, clinical features, disease course, and outcome variables were collected from the IKDR data set. Using body mass index (BMI)/weight z score percentile equivalents, patient weight was categorized as normal weight (BMI <85th percentile), overweight (BMI ≥85th to <95th percentile), and obese (BMI ≥95th percentile). The association between adiposity category and clinical features and outcomes was determined separately for KD and MIS-C patient groups., Results: Of 1767 children, 338 with KD (median age, 2.5 [IQR, 1.2-5.0] years; 60.4% male) and 1429 with MIS-C (median age, 8.7 [IQR, 5.3-12.4] years; 61.4% male) were contemporaneously included in the study. For patients with MIS-C vs KD, the prevalence of overweight (17.1% vs 11.5%) and obesity (23.7% vs 11.5%) was significantly higher (P < .001), with significantly higher adiposity z scores, even after adjustment for age, sex, and race and ethnicity. For patients with KD, apart from intensive care unit admission rate, adiposity category was not associated with laboratory test features or outcomes. For patients with MIS-C, higher adiposity category was associated with worse laboratory test values and outcomes, including a greater likelihood of shock, intensive care unit admission and inotrope requirement, and increased inflammatory markers, creatinine levels, and alanine aminotransferase levels. Adiposity category was not associated with coronary artery abnormalities for either MIS-C or KD., Conclusions and Relevance: In this international cohort study, obesity was more prevalent for patients with MIS-C vs KD, and associated with more severe presentation, laboratory test features, and outcomes. These findings suggest that obesity as a comorbid factor should be considered at the clinical presentation in children with MIS-C.

Using an extended full-cycle carbon model from the Faustmann framework, which allows for management strategies of several uses concurrently implemented in the same area of forest, this paper investigates the selection of management objectives that are beneficial and optimal for forest plantations in Vietnam. Three scenarios are considered: Scenario 1 investigates the management objective of maximizing the land economic value (LEV) of timber as a single production. Scenario 2 investigates the joint production of timber and bioenergy sources. Scenario 3 analyzes the joint production of timber, bioenergy production, and carbon sequestration. The findings reveal that if growers pursue a timber management objective (Scenario 1), the farming business only provides considerable benefits under the government-subsidized credit scheme of 8.4%. For a higher non-subsidized interest rate of 15.24% of commercial banks, such gains reduce substantially and become negative value under the mean interest rate of 19.08% of private credit sources. Altering the management objective to a joint production of timber and raw bioenergy production (Scenario 2) will boost the LEV by a moderate level, but at the expense of timber production and thus carbon stock. However, the reduction tendency of timber and carbon balance is not substantial due mainly to the relatively small proportion of bioenergy production compared to timber production; therefore, decision-making frameworks targeting carbon uptake may be capable of incorporating such levels of confliction. Further internalizing the carbon value of the forest into management objectives generally leads to a longer rotation length, thus improving both carbon sequestration and income gains. Shifting the current timber-dominant management objective to a joint production of timber and bioenergy sources, or, alternatively, a joint production of timber, bioenergy production, and carbon sequestration when the carbon market is emerging, is a good alternative strategy for forest management in Vietnam., (© 2023. End-of-life (EOL) products are getting more and more attention as a result of the rapid decline in environmental resources and the dramatic rise in population at the moment. Disassembly is a crucial step in the reuse of EOL products. However, the disassembly process for EOL products is highly uncertain, and the disassembly planning method may not produce the anticipated outcomes in actual implementation. Based on the physical nature of the product disassembly process with multiple uncertain variables, certainty disassembly cannot adequately characterize the uncertain variables effectively. Uncertainty disassembly takes into account the changes in parts caused by product use, such as wear and corrosion, which can better coordinate the arrangement of disassembly tasks and better match the actual remanufacturing process. After analysis, it was found that most of studies on uncertain disassembly focus on the economic efficiency perspective and lack of energy consumption considerations. For the gaps in the current study, this paper proposes a stochastic energy consumption disassembly line balance problem (SEDLBP) and constructs a mathematical model of SEDLBP based on the disassembly of spatial interference matrix, In this model, the energy consumption generated by the disassembly operation and workstation standby is not a constant value but is generated stochastically in a uniformly distributed interval. In addition, an improved social engineering optimization algorithm that incorporates stochastic simulation (SSEO) is proposed in this paper to effectively address the issue. The incorporation of swap operators and swap sequences in SSEO makes it possible to solve discrete optimization problems efficiently. With the development of the industrial economy and the accelerated renewal of products, many end-of-life products (EOL) have been generated to pollute our environment. This fact highlights the importance of recycling and remanufacturing EOL products as an active research topic. An efficient disassembly line is one solution for improving the remanufacturing and recycling processes of EOL products while reducing the environmental pollution. Although many optimization models and intelligent algorithms were developed to address the disassembly line balancing problem (DLBP), uncertainty was ignored by them. To alleviate the drawbacks of uncertainty for the disassembly operation, this study proposes a stochastic multi-objective optimization model for the DLBP minimizing the disassembly idle rate, smoothness, and energy consumption generated during the operation under uncertain operation time. Another novelty of this paper is to present an improved version of the northern goshawk optimization algorithm using a stochastic simulation method to solve the proposed model. The feasibility of the proposed model and the applicability of the developed algorithm are shown by two extensive examples. For remanufacturing to be more economically attractive, there is a need to develop automatic disassembly and automated visual detection methods. Screw removal is a common step in end-of-life product disassembly for remanufacturing. This paper presents a two-stage detection framework for structurally damaged screws and a linear regression model of reflection features that allows the detection framework to be conducted under uneven illumination conditions. The first stage employs reflection features to extract screws together with the reflection feature regression model. The second stage uses texture features to filter out false areas that have reflection features similar to those of screws. A self-optimisation strategy and weighted fusion are employed to connect the two stages. The detection framework was implemented on a robotic platform designed for disassembling electric vehicle batteries. This method allows screw removal to be conducted automatically in complex disassembly tasks, and the utilisation of the reflection feature and data learning provides new ideas for further research.

Coffee waste is often viewed as a problem, but it can be converted into value-added products if managed with clean technologies and long-term waste management strategies. Several compounds, including lipids, lignin, cellulose and hemicelluloses, tannins, antioxidants, caffeine, polyphenols, carotenoids, flavonoids, and biofuel can be extracted or produced through recycling, recovery, or energy valorization. In this review, we will discuss the potential uses of by-products generated from the waste derived from coffee production, including coffee leaves and flowers from cultivation; coffee pulps, husks, and silverskin from coffee processing; and spent coffee grounds (SCGs) from post-consumption. The full utilization of these coffee by-products can be achieved by establishing suitable infrastructure and building networks between scientists, business organizations, and policymakers, thus reducing the economic and environmental burdens of coffee processing in a sustainable manner.

Due to environmental pollution and resource shortages, the electric vehicle industry has been developing swiftly, and the market demand for batteries, as an essential part of electric vehicles, has also surged. Proper disassembly of end-of-life vehicle batteries (ELV batteries) is necessary to achieve the integrity and closure of their life cycle, promote the development of green remanufacturing, effectively reduce the pollution of the environment caused by metal ion leakage, and reduce people's dependence on natural resources to a certain extent. To schedule the disassembly operations of ELV batteries more rationally and further promote their disassembly quality and efficiency, this paper proposes a dual-objective disassembly sequence planning (DSP) optimisation model, which aims to minimise the hazard index and energy cost during ELV battery disassembly operations. Since the proposed model is a complex NP-hard optimisation problem, this study develops an efficient metaheuristic algorithm for solving this model based on the northern goshawk optimisation algorithm. The main algorithm adds two types of discrete recombination operators and a local search operator. At the same time, the predatory behaviour of the goshawk is optimised by combining the characteristics of the disassembly sequence planning problem to improve its performance. Finally, the disassembly of the battery of a Tesla Model 1 is used as a case study to demonstrate the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed method., (© 2023. Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by SARS-CoV-2, has become one of the most serious public health crises worldwide. Most infected people are asymptomatic but are still able to spread the virus. People with mild or moderate illnesses are likely to recover without hospitalization, while critically ill patients face a higher risk of organ injury or even death. In this study, we aimed to identify a novel biomarker that can predict the severity of COVID-19 patients. Clinical information and RNA-seq data of leukocytes from whole blood samples with and without a COVID-19 diagnosis (n = 100 and 26, respectively) were retrieved from the National Center for Biotechnology Information Gene Expression Omnibus database. Raw data were processed using the Transcripts Per Million (TPM) method and then transformed using log 2 (TPM+1) for normalization. The CD24-CSF1R index was established. Violin plots, Kaplan-Meier curves, ROC curves, and multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression analyses were performed to evaluate the prognostic value of the established index. The CD24-CSF1R index was significantly associated with ICU admission (n = 50 ICU, 50 non-ICU) and ventilatory status (n = 42 ventilation, 58 non-ventilation) with p = 4.186e-11 and p = 1.278e-07, respectively. The ROC curve produced a relatively accurate prediction of ICU admission with an AUC of 0.8524. Additionally, patients with a high index had significantly fewer mechanical ventilation-free days than patients with a low index (p = 6.07e-07). Furthermore, the established index showed a strong prognostic ability for the risk of using a ventilator in the multivariate Cox regression model (p < 0.001). The CD24-CSF1R index was significantly associated with COVID-19 severity. Herein, we investigated the possibility of co-producing xylo-oligosaccharides (XOSs) from bamboo, as value-added products, along with succinic and lactic acids, as platform chemicals. Xylan was extracted from bamboo using the alkali method under mild conditions. From xylan, XOSs were produced by partial enzymatic hydrolysis at a conversion rate of 83.9%, and all reaction conditions resulted in similar degrees of polymerization. Hydrogen peroxide-acetic acid (HPAC) pretreatment effectively removed lignin from NaOH-treated bamboo, and the enzymatic hydrolytic yield of NaOH and HPAC-treated bamboo was 84.3% of the theoretical yield. The production of succinic and lactic acids from the hydrolysate resulted in conversion rates of approximately 63.2% and 91.3% of the theoretical yield using Corynebacterium glutamicum Δldh and Actinobacillus succinogenes, respectively, under facultative anaerobic conditions. The Pediatric Heart Network (PHN) trial showed similar efficacy of β-blockers (BB) and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB) for aortic root dilation in Marfan syndrome, but the impact on prescription practices is unknown. We hypothesized BB and ARB prescriptions would increase after the trial results were published (2014). Prescription data (2007-2016) were obtained from outpatient encounters (IBM Marketscan) for Marfan syndrome patients (6 months-25 years old). Excluding 2014 as a washout period, we analyzed two intervals: 2007-2013 and 2015-2016. Medication categories included BB, ARB, angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEI), combination (BB/ARB and/or BB/ACEI), and no drug. Interrupted time-series analysis assessed immediate level change after publication and change in slope for the trend pre- and post-publication. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals from logistic regressions and generalized estimating equation methods accounted for correlation of prescriptions within patients. In 1499 patients (age 14.1 ± 6.1 years, 59% female) seen 2007-2013, BB trended lower [OR 0.91 (0.89, 0.93), p < 0.001] and ARB trended higher [OR 1.12 (1.07, 1.18), p < 0.001], while combination, ACEI, and no drug remained stable. This trend persisted, but was not significant, for BB [OR 0.54 (0.27, 1.08), p = 0.37] and ARB [OR 1.91 (0.55, 6.69), p = 0.31] in 2015-2016. Combination, ACEI, and no drug remained similar. In short term follow-up, changes in prescription practices following publication of the PHN trial were not statistically significant. The rate of textile waste generation worldwide has increased dramatically due to a rise in clothing consumption and production. Here, conversion of cotton-based, colored cotton-based, and blended cotton-polyethylene terephthalate (PET) textile waste materials into value-added chemicals (bioethanol, sorbitol, lactic acid, terephthalic acid (TPA), and ethylene glycol (EG)) via enzymatic hydrolysis and fermentation was investigated. In order to enhance the efficiency of enzymatic saccharification, effective pretreatment methods for each type of textile waste were developed, respectively. A high glucose yield of 99.1% was obtained from white cotton-based textile waste after NaOH pretreatment. Furthermore, the digestibility of the cellulose in colored cotton-based textile wastes was increased 1.38-1.75 times because of the removal of dye materials by HPAC-NaOH pretreatment. The blended cotton-PET samples showed good hydrolysis efficiency following PET removal via NaOH-ethanol pretreatment, with a glucose yield of 92.49%. The sugar content produced via enzymatic hydrolysis was then converted into key platform chemicals (bioethanol, sorbitol, and lactic acid) via fermentation or hydrogenation. The maximum ethanol yield was achieved with the white T-shirt sample (537 mL/kg substrate), which was 3.2, 2.1, and 2.6 times higher than those obtained with rice straw, pine wood, and oak wood, respectively. Glucose was selectively converted into sorbitol and LA at a yield of 70% and 83.67%, respectively. TPA and EG were produced from blended cotton-PET via NaOH-ethanol pretreatment. Importance: Data are limited regarding adverse reactions after COVID-19 vaccination in patients with a history of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C). The lack of vaccine safety data in this unique population may cause hesitancy and concern for many families and health care professionals., Objective: To describe adverse reactions following COVID-19 vaccination in patients with a history of MIS-C., Design, Setting, and Participants: In this multicenter cross-sectional study including 22 North American centers participating in a National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, National Institutes of Health-sponsored study, Long-Term Outcomes After the Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MUSIC), patients with a prior diagnosis of MIS-C who were eligible for COVID-19 vaccination (age ≥5 years; ≥90 days after MIS-C diagnosis) were surveyed between December 13, 2021, and February 18, 2022, regarding COVID-19 vaccination status and adverse reactions., Exposures: COVID-19 vaccination after MIS-C diagnosis., Main Outcomes and Measures: The main outcome was adverse reactions following COVID-19 vaccination. Comparisons were made using the Wilcoxon rank sum test for continuous variables and the χ2 or Fisher exact test for categorical variables., Results: Of 385 vaccine-eligible patients who were surveyed, 185 (48.1%) received at least 1 vaccine dose; 136 of the vaccinated patients (73.5%) were male, and the median age was 12.2 years (IQR, 9.5-14.7 years). Among vaccinated patients, 1 (0.5%) identified as American Indian/Alaska Native, non-Hispanic; 9 (4.9%) as Asian, non-Hispanic; 45 (24.3%) as Black, non-Hispanic; 59 (31.9%) as Hispanic or Latino; 53 (28.6%) as White, non-Hispanic; 2 (1.1%) as multiracial, non-Hispanic; and 2 (1.1%) as other, non-Hispanic; 14 (7.6%) had unknown or undeclared race and ethnicity. The median time from MIS-C diagnosis to first vaccine dose was 9.0 months (IQR, 5.1-11.9 months); 31 patients (16.8%) received 1 dose, 142 (76.8%) received 2 doses, and 12 (6.5%) received 3 doses. Almost all patients received the BNT162b2 vaccine (347 of 351 vaccine doses [98.9%]). Minor adverse reactions were observed in 90 patients (48.6%) and were most often arm soreness (62 patients [33.5%]) and/or fatigue (32 [17.3%]). In 32 patients (17.3%), adverse reactions were treated with medications, most commonly acetaminophen (21 patients [11.4%]) or ibuprofen (11 [5.9%]). Four patients (2.2%) sought medical evaluation, but none required testing or hospitalization. There were no patients with any serious adverse events, including myocarditis or recurrence of MIS-C., Conclusions and Relevance: In this cross-sectional study of patients with a history of MIS-C, no serious adverse events were reported after COVID-19 vaccination. These findings suggest that the safety profile of COVID-19 vaccination administered at least 90 days following MIS-C diagnosis appears to be similar to that in the general population.

The use of spoken and written language is a fundamental human capacity. Individual differences in reading- and language-related skills are influenced by genetic variation, with twin-based heritability estimates of 30 to 80% depending on the trait. The genetic architecture is complex, heterogeneous, and multifactorial, but investigations of contributions of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were thus far underpowered. We present a multicohort genome-wide association study (GWAS) of five traits assessed individually using psychometric measures (word reading, nonword reading, spelling, phoneme awareness, and nonword repetition) in samples of 13,633 to 33,959 participants aged 5 to 26 y. We identified genome-wide significant association with word reading (rs11208009, P = 1.098 × 10 -8 ) at a locus that has not been associated with intelligence or educational attainment. All five reading-/language-related traits showed robust SNP heritability, accounting for 13 to 26% of trait variability. Genomic structural equation modeling revealed a shared genetic factor explaining most of the variation in word/nonword reading, spelling, and phoneme awareness, which only partially overlapped with genetic variation contributing to nonword repetition, intelligence, and educational attainment. A multivariate GWAS of word/nonword reading, spelling, and phoneme awareness maximized power for follow-up investigation. Genetic correlation analysis with neuroimaging traits identified an association with the surface area of the banks of the left superior temporal sulcus, a brain region linked to the processing of spoken and written language. Heritability was enriched for genomic elements regulating gene expression in the fetal brain and in chromosomal regions that are depleted of Neanderthal variants. Together, these results provide avenues for deciphering the biological underpinnings of uniquely human traits.

Objectives: To compare patients treated for incomplete Kawasaki disease whose practitioners followed versus did not follow American Heart Association criteria and to evaluate the association of cardiology consultation with adherence to these guidelines., Study Design: Single centre retrospective cohort study of patients <18 years old who received ≥1 dose of intravenous immunoglobulin for Kawasaki disease between 01/2006 and 01/2018. We collected demographics, clinical and laboratory data, coronary artery abnormalities, and cardiology consultation status. Patients treated for incomplete Kawasaki disease were divided into two groups based on adherence versus nonadherence to American Heart Association guidelines and compared by Wilcoxon rank sum test and chi-squared or Fisher's exact test., Results: Of the 357 patients treated for Kawasaki disease, 109 (31%) were classified as incomplete Kawasaki disease. The American Heart Association algorithm for identifying patients with incomplete Kawasaki disease was followed in 81/109 (74%). Coronary artery abnormalities were present in 46/109 (42%) of the patients who were treated for incomplete Kawasaki disease. Cardiology consultation was more frequent in those fulfilling American Heart Association criteria for the diagnosis of incomplete Kawasaki disease versus those who did not fulfill criteria (76% versus 48%, p = 0.005)., Conclusions: Over 25% of patients treated for incomplete Kawasaki disease did not meet American Heart Association guidelines. Guidelines were more frequently followed when the paediatric cardiology team was consulted. Consulting physicians with experience and expertise in the evaluation and management of incomplete KD should be strongly considered in the care of these patients.

North Vietnam is situated on a major route of Pleistocene hominin dispersal in East Asia, and the area's karstic caves preserve many prehistoric shell middens. Fossil and genomic evidence suggest a complex human history in this region and more widely across Southeast Asia and southern China, but related archaeological investigations are hampered by challenging site stratigraphies. Recent investigations of shell middens in other geographical settings have revealed the microstratigraphic complexity of these anthropogenic deposits. But caves promote distinctive site formation processes, while tropical climates may catalyse geomorphic and diagenetic changes. These environmental factors complicate the interpretation of North Vietnam's shell middens and constraining their effects upon the formation, preservation and destruction of these sites is critical to understanding the archaeology of this region. We examine two archaeological cave sites, dated to the Late Pleistocene and located in the limestone uplands surrounding the Hanoi Basin. Each contains multiple shell midden layers associated with prehistoric occupation and burials. Using thin-section micromorphology (microstratigraphy), we reconstruct the depositional and post-depositional histories of these sites, presenting a geoarchaeological framework of interpretation that is applicable to shell middens in mainland Southeast Asia and tropical zones more widely. This work represents a further step towards improving our understanding of prehistoric human dispersals and adaptations in this region. Ear mesenchymal stem cells (EMSCs) have been investigated to differentiate into adipocytes, chondrocytes, and muscle cells in vitro. However, the factors controlling adipogenesis of this stem cell population in vitro, function, and type of adipocytes raised from them are still unclear. Here we found that genetics have a modest effect on adipogenic capacity of EMSCs. Adipocytes differentiated from EMSCs have a potential function in lipid metabolism as indicated by expression of lipogenic genes and this function of EMSC adipocytes is regulated by genetics. EMSCs failed to be differentiated into brite/brown adipocytes due to their lack of a thermogenic program, but adipocytes raised from EMSCs showed a fate of white adipocytes. Overall, our data suggest that EMSCs differentiate into functional white adipocytes in vitro and this is genetic-dependent., (© 2022. This study involved novel-designed sludge biochar (SB) adsorbed for arsenic removal with lower operating costs and higher adsorption efficiency properties. Generally, biochar only relies on micropores for pollutant adsorption, but physical adsorption is not highly efficient for arsenic removal. Therefore, in order to improve the removal efficiency of arsenic by SB, diethylenetriamine (DETA) and FeCl 3 were used in this study to modify the surface of SB by an immersion method. The objectives of this research are to obtain optimum operation conditions by assessing the effect of different Fe content, pH and initial concentration on adsorbing arsenic. This study is the first to use Density Functional Theory (DFT) to simulate and verify the adsorption mechanism of arsenic by SB. Results showed the presence of amine/iron oxyhydroxides functional groups greatly promoted SB surface activity and its arsenic adsorption potential. The surface area, pore volume and pore size of the SB were estimated to be 525 m 2 g -1 , 0.35 cm 3 g -1 and 8.71 nm, respectively. The DFT model result is the same as the result of arsenic adsorption performance with high adsorption energy (-246.3 kJmol -1 ) and shorter bond distances (1.42 Å), indicating strong chemical adsorption between arsenic and material. The reaction mechanism is divided into four pathways, including oxidation-reduction, complexation, electrostatic adsorption and pore adsorption.

Background: Understanding the clinical course and short-term outcomes of suspected myocarditis after the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination has important public health implications in the decision to vaccinate youth., Methods: We retrospectively collected data on patients <21 years old presenting before July 4, 2021, with suspected myocarditis within 30 days of COVID-19 vaccination. Lake Louise criteria were used for cardiac MRI findings. Myocarditis cases were classified as confirmed or probable on the basis of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention definitions., Results: We report on 139 adolescents and young adults with 140 episodes of suspected myocarditis (49 confirmed, 91 probable) at 26 centers. Most patients were male (n=126, 90.6%) and White (n=92, 66.2%); 29 (20.9%) were Hispanic; and the median age was 15.8 years (range, 12.1-20.3; interquartile range [IQR], 14.5-17.0). Suspected myocarditis occurred in 136 patients (97.8%) after the mRNA vaccine, with 131 (94.2%) after the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine; 128 (91.4%) occurred after the second dose. Symptoms started at a median of 2 days (range, 0-22; IQR, 1-3) after vaccination. The most common symptom was chest pain (99.3%). Patients were treated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (81.3%), intravenous immunoglobulin (21.6%), glucocorticoids (21.6%), colchicine (7.9%), or no anti-inflammatory therapies (8.6%). Twenty-six patients (18.7%) were in the intensive care unit, 2 were treated with inotropic/vasoactive support, and none required extracorporeal membrane oxygenation or died. Median hospital stay was 2 days (range, 0-10; IQR, 2-3). All patients had elevated troponin I (n=111, 8.12 ng/mL; IQR, 3.50-15.90) or T (n=28, 0.61 ng/mL; IQR, 0.25-1.30); 69.8% had abnormal ECGs and arrhythmias (7 with nonsustained ventricular tachycardia); and 18.7% had left ventricular ejection fraction <55% on echocardiogram. Of 97 patients who underwent cardiac MRI at a median 5 days (range, 0-88; IQR, 3-17) from symptom onset, 75 (77.3%) had abnormal findings: 74 (76.3%) had late gadolinium enhancement, 54 (55.7%) had myocardial edema, and 49 (50.5%) met Lake Louise criteria. Among 26 patients with left ventricular ejection fraction <55% on echocardiogram, all with follow-up had normalized function (n=25)., Conclusions: Most cases of suspected COVID-19 vaccine myocarditis occurring in persons <21 years have a mild clinical course with rapid resolution of symptoms. Abnormal findings on cardiac MRI were frequent. Future studies should evaluate risk factors, mechanisms, and long-term outcomes.
