Abstract

The pond loach Misgurnus anguillicaudatus is a freshwater fish of the loach family Cobitidae, which belongs to the order Cyrpiniformes. The fish contains high nutritional and medicinal values. In Vietnam, they are mainly distributed in the Northern to Central and Tay Nguyen areas. In order to study the genetic diversity and population structure of M. anguillicaudatus populations in Central Vietnam, partial sequences of cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene from 48 individuals were used to analyze. We detected high levels of genetic diversity in four M. anguillicaudatus populations (Hd = 0.889 ± 0.032, p = 0.010 ± 0.003). Analysis of molecular variance identified 13.64% variance among and 86.36% variance within populations. The fixation index value was 0.13635 with the probability value < 0.000001, showing the presence of moderate-to-significant genetic differentiation. The current study provides valuable genetic diversity data and the population structure of M. anguillicaudatus are meaningful to scientist and industrial communities in the field of fish conversation and genetic resource utilization. Abstract

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most common primary brain tumor, with most patients dying within 15–18 months of diagnosis despite aggressive therapy. Preclinical GBM models are valuable for exploring GBM progression and for evaluating new therapeutics or imaging approaches. The rat C6 glioma model shares similarities with human GBM, and application of noninvasive imaging enables better study of disease progression. Here, multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (mpMRI) and bioluminescence imaging (BLI) were applied to characterize longitudinal development of orthotopic luciferase-expressing C6 tumors. Across all rats (n = 11), a large variability was seen for BLI signal, a relative measure of C6 cell viability, but in most individuals, BLI signal peaked at day 11 and decreased thereafter. T2 and contrast-enhanced T1 tumor volumes significantly increased over time (P &lt, 05), and volume measures did not correlate with BLI signal. After day 11, tumor regions of noncontrast enhancement appeared in postcontrast T1-weighted magnetic resonance imaging, and had significantly higher apparent diffusion coefficient values compared with contrast-enhanced regions (P &lt, 05). This suggests formation of ill-perfused, necrotic regions beyond day 11, which were apparent at end-point–matched tissue sections. Our study represents the first combined use of BLI and mpMRI to characterize the progression of disease in the orthotopic C6 rat model, and it highlights the variability in tumor growth, the complementary information from BLI and mpMRI, and the value of multimodality imaging to better characterize tumor development. Future application of these imaging tools will be useful for evaluation of treatment response, and should be pertinent for other preclinical models.

Abstract

International audience; Intra-abdominal infections (IAI) are an important cause of morbidity and are frequently associated with poor prognosis, particularly in high-risk patients.The cornerstones in the management of complicated IAIs are timely effective source control with appropriate antimicrobial therapy. Empiric antimicrobial therapy is important in the management of intra-abdominal infections and must be broad enough to cover all likely organisms because inappropriate initial antimicrobial therapy is associated with poor patient outcomes and the development of bacterial resistance.The overuse of antimicrobials is widely accepted as a major driver of some emerging infections (such as C. difficile), the selection of resistant pathogens in individual patients, and for the continued development of antimicrobial resistance globally. The growing emergence of multi-drug resistant organisms and the limited development of new agents available to counteract them have caused an impending crisis with alarming implications, especially with regards to Gram-negative bacteria.An international task force from 79 different countries has joined this project by sharing a document on the rational use of antimicrobials for patients with IAIs. The project has been termed AGORA (Antimicrobials: A Global Alliance for Optimizing their Rational Use in Intra-Abdominal Infections). The authors hope that AGORA, involving many of the world's leading experts, can actively raise awareness in health workers and can improve prescribing behavior in treating IAIs.

Abstract

This declaration, signed by an interdisciplinary task force of 234 experts from 83 different countries with different backgrounds, highlights the threat posed by antimicrobial resistance and the need for appropriate use of antibiotic agents and antifungal agents in hospitals worldwide especially focusing on surgical infections. As such, it is our intent to raise awareness among healthcare workers and improve antimicrobial prescribing. To facilitate its dissemination, the declaration was translated in different languages.

Abstract

MnFeP1-xSix compounds with x=0.10,0.20,0.24,0.28,...,0.80,1 were prepared by high-energy ball milling and solid-state reaction. The structural, magnetic, and magnetocaloric properties are investigated as a function of temperature and magnetic field. X-ray diffraction studies show that the samples in the range from x=0.28 to 0.64 adopt the hexagonal Fe2P-type structure with a small amount of second phase which increases with increasing Si content. The samples with lower Si content show the orthorhombic Co2P-type structure. Magnetic measurements show that the paramagnetic-ferromagnetic transition temperatures range from 214 to 377 K. Of much importance is the fact that these compounds do not contain any toxic components and exhibit excellent magnetocaloric properties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Substitution of some Cr for Mn atoms in MnCoGe was employed to control the magnetic and structural transitions in this alloy to coincide, leading to a single first-order magnetostructural transition from the ferromagnetic to the paramagnetic state with a giant magnetocaloric effect observed near room temperature. Further increase in the Cr content in the Mn1-xCrxCoGe alloys can induce another first-order magnetoelastic transition from the antiferromagnetic to the ferromagnetic state occurring at lower temperature. The giant magnetocaloric effect as well as the simultaneous tunability of the two magnetic transitions make these materials promising for future cooling applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Sixteen isolates of Pasteurella multocida were cultured from cases diagnosed as acute septicaemic pasteurellosis in Vietnamese pigs. The HSB-PCR assay provided rapid presumptive determination of 10 isolates of P. multocida identified as haemorrhagic septicaemia (HS) causing type B cultures (B:2, B:5, B:2,5). Serological designation using the Carter and Heddleston typing systems confirmed these findings, and identified the six HSB-PCR negative cultures as either A:1, A:3 or D:3,4. Biochemical fermentation and REP-PCR revealed phenotypic and genotypic identity between P. multocida type A:1 isolated from Vietnamese pigs and poultry. Marked homogeneity was also demonstrated among HSB-PCR positive swine isolates, which were shown to possess genotypic identity with P. multocida type B:2 from buffaloes diagnosed with HS.
