Abstract

Recent studies have showed that one of the most common parasite of Chamelea gallina is Nematopsis sp, whose oocysts infect heavily the digestive gland and, above all, the gills of the bivalve. Notwithstanding the high density of the oocysts of the parasite in Chamelea gallina tissues, it is not clear pathological relevance, pathogenicity mechanisms and effects on the host survival of the parasite. In this study the effects of parasite presence on the ROS production and on the oxidative stress are reported, as it has been seen in other parasites. After observing oocyst density, tissues are stored in liquid nitrogen until the analyses of SOD activity, the antioxidant enzyme induced by superoxide anion presence. Result obtained show activity values comparable with the ones measured in other Adriatic bivalves, with fluctuations not significantly correlated with the oocyst density, almost similar in these preliminary observations.

Abstract

In a multicentre study, 83 patients with advanced and previously uniformly treated multiple myeloma (MM) were randomised between cyclophosphamide (600 mg m-2) and epirubicin (70 mg m-2), administered every 3 weeks for three courses and both associated with prednisone and interferon-alpha2b. Both regimens were administered on an outpatient basis and had low haematological toxicity. Clinical results were similar. Overall response rate (43%) and median response and survival (5.9 and 14.1 months respectively) compare well with those obtained with more aggressive chemotherapy schedules.

Abstract

The paper is concerned with the design of pneumatic structures which can be sent to the surface of the moon in a relatively small package and then opened to provide a large pressurized volume with life support systems to support a population of 12 people. A proposed system consists primarily of a Kevlar membrane which will support the internal pressures of the environment, a rigid pallet which will house all the life-support systems, and wall foam which provides sound and temperature insulation. The modules would be covered by three meters of lunar soil for radiation and temperature insulation. Site preparation, module connection, and characteristics of different modules are considered.
