17. Developing the Counselor as a Person and as a Professional: Attitudinal Changes in Core Counseling Courses

Abstract

This quantitative pilot study examined changes in counseling students' professional attitudes in 3 master's-level core courses. Results indicated significantly more change occurred during an ethics course than during the other courses. Changes occurred in attitudes consistent with humanistic philosophy, including self-awareness, professional impairment and self-care, healthy professional relationships, empathy, and multicultural awareness. Abstract

This inventory is designed to classify avocational activities in a systematic manner. It is patterned after the "Dictionary of Occupational Terms," and can be used: (1) to evaluate patterns of activities, (2) to explore avocational activities, (3) to facilitate information retrieval, and (4) to serve as basis for classifying data. The first part of the report is an explanation of the three digit coding structure which is utilized. The second part is the inventory which is divided into the following areas: (1) games, (2) sports, (3) nature activities, (4) collection activities, (5) crafts, (6) art and music activities, (7) educational and cultural activities, (8) volunteer activities, (9) organizations, and (10) social relationships. 20. Disseminating and Using Research Reports.

Abstract

The authors offer some practical guidelines in four areas of rehabilitation research information dissemination: (1) filing and retrieval problems; (2) level and styles of writing, listing, abstracting, summarizing, and reconceptualizing; (3) profiling the average practitioner-consumers; and (4) leveling attitudinal barriers. Filing and retrieval problems may be alleviated by the use of authorship and publications specifications; multiple indexing, specifying background information; and use of electronic retrieval systems. Research jargon should be translated into English. A need exists for publications which periodically consolidate the information presented in original research reports. The needs and capabilities of the practitioner-consumer should be profiled. The authors suggest five research possibilities to determine the gap between the ideal model and the average professional. Attitudinal barriers, such as lack of motivation, distrust of research findings, and incorporation of new ideas dysfunctional to the agency and the individual, should be eliminated. (WR)

Abstract

The major purpose of this study was to find an efficient method of reporting rehabilitation research to researchers and practitioners by developing and evaluating a uniform and concise method of abstracting research reports. The research hypothesis tested was that uniform abstracts of Research and Development final reports can communicate salient content and research methodology information more briefly and with as much or more clarity that either final reports or Vocational Rehabilitation Administration (VRA) Service Series Summaries. A panel of six judges was used to test the major hypothesis. Following a one and one-half hour training program, judges rated the basic types of reports on two instruments. Results included: (1) research adequacy information was conveyed to a significantly greater extent by abstracts, (2) abstracts of final reports would appear to have conveyed research adequacy information as well as the final report themselves, (3) abstracts were found to convey research adequacy and content information as well as the longer final reports, and (4) abstracts were found to convey research adequacy information to a significantly greater extent than did VRA Service Series Summaries. A total of 97 studies are reported in this review of research in vocational rehabilitation. Projects were selected on the following criteria: (1) pertinence to rehabilitation counseling practice, (2) research approach, (3) broad generalizability, and (4) supported by the Vocational Rehabilitation Administration for a one-to-five-year period and completed by 1965. Abstract

Buckley describes how Britain took the independent step of recognizing the People's Republic of China, a step which led to problems about China being invited to the San Francisco conference. After China's entry into the war in Korea, Hong Kong's trade was squeezed through trade embargos imposed by the United States and its exposed security system was vulnerable, had it not been for the presence of the US 7th fleet in the Taiwan Straits. Ferretti shows that the leading ideas of Yoshida Shigeru on relations between Japan and the People's Republic of China did not change after the failure of the Dulles-Morrison Agreement as he continued to pursue normalization with the PRC. He had the idea of joining the Colombo Plan and entering the markets of Southeast Asia by establishing a preferential bilateral axis with Britain but this was ultimately rejected by Britain at the time of Yoshida's visit to Europe in 1954. Meaney describes External Affairs Minister Percy Spender's views on the need for a Pacific Pact. When it became clear from discussions with Dulles early in 1951 that the treaty with Japan would not be punitive or restrict her rearming, Australia called for some sort of security agreement with the United States. This came to fruition as the ANZUS Pact which was signed and ratified more or less simultaneously with the San Francisco treaty. Trotter discusses New Zealand's reaction to the Australian initiative over the need for a security pact. While she had considerable reservations, most notably over relations with Britain, she appreciated the need for security guarantees and joined the ANZUS Pact.
