The Large Hadron electron Collider (LHeC) is designed to move the field of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) to the energy and intensity frontier of particle physics. Exploiting energy recovery technology, it collides a novel, intense electron beam with a proton or ion beam from the High Luminosity--Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The accelerator and interaction region are designed for concurrent electron-proton and proton-proton operation. This report represents an update of the Conceptual Design Report (CDR) of the LHeC, published in 2012. It comprises new results on parton structure of the proton and heavier nuclei, QCD dynamics, electroweak and top-quark physics. It is shown how the LHeC will open a new chapter of nuclear particle physics in extending the accessible kinematic range in lepton-nucleus scattering by several orders of magnitude. Due to enhanced luminosity, large energy and the cleanliness of the hadronic final states, the LHeC has a strong Higgs physics programme and its own discovery potential for new physics. Building on the 2012 CDR, the report represents a detailed updated design of the energy recovery electron linac (ERL) including new lattice, magnet, superconducting radio frequency technology and further components. Challenges of energy recovery are described and the lower energy, high current, 3-turn ERL facility, PERLE at Orsay, is presented which uses the LHeC characteristics serving as a development facility for the design and operation of the LHeC. An updated detector design is presented corresponding to the acceptance, resolution and calibration goals which arise from the Higgs and parton density function physics programmes. The paper also presents novel results on the Future Circular Collider in electron-hadron mode, FCC-eh, which utilises the same ERL technology to further extend the reach of DIS to even higher centre-of-mass energies., Comment: 373 pages, many figures, to be published by J. PEOPLE with mental illness , *SUICIDE risk factors , *MENTAL depression , *BIPOLAR disorder , *DRUG overdose - Abstract
Introduction Methods Results Conclusion People with severe mental illness (SMI) have a higher risk of suicide compared with the general population. However, variations in suicide methods between people with different SMIs have not been examined. The aim of this pre‐registered (PROSPERO CRD42022351748) systematic review was to pool the odds of people with SMI who die by suicide versus those with no SMI, stratified by suicide method.Searches were conducted on December 11, 2023 across PubMed, PsycInfo, CINAHL, and Embase. Eligible studies were those that reported suicide deaths stratified by SMI and suicide methods. Studies were pooled in a random‐effects meta‐analysis, and risk of bias was measured by the Joanna Briggs Institute checklist. After screening, 12 studies were eligible (n = 380,523). Compared with those with no SMI, people with schizophrenia had 3.38× higher odds of jumping from heights (95% CI: 2.08–5.50), 1.93× higher odds of drowning (95% CI: 1.50–2.48). People with bipolar disorder also had 3.2× higher odds of jumping from heights (95% CI: 2.70–3.78). Finally, people with major depression had 3.11× higher odds of drug overdose (95% CI: 1.53–6.31), 2.11× higher odds of jumping from heights (95% CI: 1.93–2.31), and 2.33× lower odds of dying by firearms (OR = 0.43, 95% CI: 0.33–0.56). No studies were classified as high risk of bias, and no outcomes had high levels of imprecision or indirectness. These findings could inform lethal means counselling practices in this population. Additionally individual, clinical, community and public health interventions for people with SMI should prioritise, where feasible, means restriction including access to heights or drugs to overdose. This Report summarizes the results of the activities of the LHC Higgs Cross Section Working Group in the period 2014-2016. The main goal of the working group was to present the state-of-the-art of Higgs physics at the LHC, integrating all new results that have appeared in the last few years. The first part compiles the most up-to-date predictions of Higgs boson production cross sections and decay branching ratios, parton distribution functions, and off-shell Higgs boson production and interference effects. The second part discusses the recent progress in Higgs effective field theory predictions, followed by the third part on pseudo-observables, simplified template cross section and fiducial cross section measurements, which give the baseline framework for Higgs boson property measurements. The fourth part deals with the beyond the Standard Model predictions of various benchmark scenarios of Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, extended scalar sector, Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model and exotic Higgs boson decays. This report follows three previous working-group reports: Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 1. Inclusive Observables (CERN-2011-002), Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 2. Differential Distributions (CERN-2012-002), and Handbook of LHC Higgs Cross Sections: 3. Higgs properties (CERN-2013-004). The current report serves as the baseline reference for Higgs physics in LHC Run 2 and beyond., Comment: 869 pages, 295 figures, 248 tables and 1645 citations. - Abstract
The Large Hadron–Electron Collider (LHeC) is designed to move the field of deep inelastic scattering (DIS) to the energy and intensity frontier of particle physics. Exploiting energy-recovery technology, it collides a novel, intense electron beam with a proton or ion beam from the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The accelerator and interaction region are designed for concurrent electron–proton and proton–proton operations. This report represents an update to the LHeC’s conceptual design report (CDR), published in 2012. It comprises new results on the parton structure of the proton and heavier nuclei, QCD dynamics, and electroweak and top-quark physics. It is shown how the LHeC will open a new chapter of nuclear particle physics by extending the accessible kinematic range of lepton–nucleus scattering by several orders of magnitude. Due to its enhanced luminosity and large energy and the cleanliness of the final hadronic states, the LHeC has a strong Higgs physics programme and its own discovery potential for new physics. Building on the 2012 CDR, this report contains a detailed updated design for the energy-recovery electron linac (ERL), including a new lattice, magnet and superconducting radio-frequency technology, and further components. Challenges of energy recovery are described, and the lower-energy, high-current, three-turn ERL facility, PERLE at Orsay, is presented, which uses the LHeC characteristics serving as a development facility for the design and operation of the LHeC. An updated detector design is presented corresponding to the acceptance, resolution, and calibration goals that arise from the Higgs and parton-density-function physics programmes. This paper also presents novel results for the Future Circular Collider in electron–hadron (FCC-eh) mode, which utilises the same ERL technology to further extend the reach of DIS to even higher centre-of-mass energies.

The 8 TeV LHC Higgs search data just released indicates the existence of a scalar resonance with mass ~ 125 GeV. We examine the implications of the data reported by ATLAS, CMS and the Tevatron collaborations on understanding the properties of this scalar by performing joint fits on its couplings to other Standard Model particles. We discuss and characterize to what degree this resonance has the properties of the Standard Model (SM) Higgs, and consider what implications can be extracted for New Physics in a (mostly) model-independent fashion. We find that, if the Higgs couplings to fermions and weak vector bosons are allowed to differ from their standard values, the SM is ~ 2 sigma from the best fit point to current data. Fitting to a possible invisible decay branching ratio, we find BR_{inv} = 0.05\pm 0.32\ (95% C.L.) We also discuss and develop some ways of using the data in order to bound or rule out models which modify significantly the properties of this scalar resonance and apply these techniques to the global current data set., Comment: 26 pages, 7 figures, v2 post ICHEP data update

We develop a formalism for constructing the Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata (PMNS) matrix and neutrino masses using an expansion that originates when a sequence of heavy right handed neutrinos are integrated out, assuming a seesaw mechanism for the origin of neutrino masses. The expansion establishes relationships between the structure of the PMNS matrix and the mass differences of neutrinos, and allows symmetry implications for measured deviations from tri-bimaximal form to be studied systematically. Our approach does not depend on choosing the rotation between the weak and mass eigenstates of the charged lepton fields to be diagonal. We comment on using this expansion to examine the symmetry implications of the recent results from the Daya-Bay collaboration reporting the discovery of a non zero value for θ13, indicating a deviation from tri-bimaximal form, with a significance of 5.2σ.

General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
We extend the canonical formalism for the motion of $N$-particles in lineal gravity to include charges. Under suitable coordinate conditions and boundary conditions the determining equation of the Hamiltonian (a kind of transcendental equation) is derived from the matching conditions for the dilaton field at the particles' position. The canonical equations of motion are derived from this determining equation. For the equal mass case the canonical equations in terms of the proper time can be exactly solved in terms of hyperbolic and/or trigonometric functions. In electrodynamics with zero cosmological constant the trajectories for repulsive charges exhibit not only bounded motion but also a countably infinite series of unbounded motions for a fixed value of the total energy $H_{0}$, while for attractive charges the trajectories are simply periodic. When the cosmological constant $\Lambda$ is introduced, the motion for a given $\Lambda$ and $H_{0}$ is classified in terms of the charge-momentum diagram from which we can predict what type of the motion is realized for a given charge. Since in this theory the charge of each particle appears in the form $e_{1}e_{2}$ in the determining equation, the static balance condition in 1+1 dimensions turns out to be identical with the condition in Newtonian theory. We generalize this condition to non-zero momenta, obtaining the first exact solution to the static balance problem that does not obey the Majumdar-Papapetrou condition., Comment: Latex, 80 pages, 42 figures

We discuss the phenomenology of effective field theories with new scalar or vector representations of the Standard Model quark avor symmetry group, allowing for large avor breaking involving the third generation. Such field content can have a relatively low mass scale ≲ TeV and O(1) couplings to quarks, while being naturally consistent with both avor violating and avor diagonal constraints. These theories therefore have the potential for early discovery at LHC, and provide a avor safe \tool box" for addressing anomalies at colliders and low energy experiments. We catalogue the possible avor symmetric representations, and consider applications to the anomalous Tevatron t t̄ forward backward asymmetry and Bs mixing measurements, individually or concurrently. Collider signatures and constraints on avor symmetric models are also studied more generally. In our examination of the t t̄ forward backward asymmetry we determine model independent acceptance corrections appropriate for comparing against CDF data that can be applied to any model seeking to explain the t t̄, forward backward asymmetry. © 2011 SISSA.

Electroweak precision data constraints on avor symmetric vector fields are determined. The avor multiplets of spin one that we examine are the complete set of fields that couple to quark bi-linears at tree level while not initially breaking the quark global avor symmetry group. Flavor safe vector masses proximate to, and in some cases below, the electroweak symmetry breaking scale are found to be allowed. Many of these fields provide a avor safe mechanism to explain the tt forward backward anomaly, and can simultaneously significantly raise the allowed values of the Standard Model Higgs mass consistent with electroweak precision data. © SISSA 2011.

Contamination often occurs as a result of metals and organic chemicals from industrial processes being deposited on land and in water. Quantification of contamination has traditionally involved measuring the concentration of chemicals present. However, this does not necessarily assess toxicity due to chemical interactions or assess that portion that is “bioavailable”. The work presented in this thesis uses the naturally bioluminescent bacterium Vibrio fischeri as the biosensor in bioassays to assess such toxicity. The growth of the bacterium was characterised and the methodology developed for preservation by freeze-drying. Quality control procedures were established. The response of rehydrated cells was investigated under different conditions, and the toxicity of a range of organic compounds and metals was measured under ideal conditions before progressing to environmental samples. This baseline testing was also used to determine the suitability of methanol as a solvent for biosensor testing and chemical analyses. A site where metal amended sludge cake had been added during a long-term field trial was assessed using the bioassay. Toxicity was shown to be attributable to pH and not metal concentrations. Samples from a contaminated foreshore were assessed with the bioassay and by chemical analysis using methanol as an extraction solvent. The V. fischeri bioassay was shown to be a robust procedure for toxicity assessments, vials of the freeze-dried cells were shown to have a 1 year shelf-life and offered a cost effective alternative to Microtox®. The developed bioassay should be specified in legislation for toxicity assessment particularly if future work demonstrates that it is a surrogate for higher organisms.

This paper also presents novel results for the Future Circular Collider in electron-hadron (FCC-eh) mode, which utilises the same ERL technology to further extend the reach of DIS to even higher centre-of-mass energies., Journal of Physics G: Nuclear and Particle Physics, 48 (11), ISSN:0305-4616, ISSN:0954-3899, ISSN:1361-6471, ISSN:0954-3889

We calculate the complete order y 2 and y 4 terms of the 59 × 59 one-loop anomalous dimension matrix for the dimension-six operators of the Standard Model effective field theory, where y is a generic Yukawa coupling. These terms, together with the terms of order λ, λ 2 and λy 2 depending on the Standard Model Higgs self-coupling λ which were calculated in a previous work, yield the complete one-loop anomalous dimension matrix in the limit of vanishing gauge couplings. The Yukawa contributions result in non-trivial flavor mixing in the various operator sectors of the Standard Model effective theory. © 2014 SISSA.

We calculate the gauge terms of the one-loop anomalous dimension matrix for the dimension-six operators of the Standard Model effective field theory (SM EFT). Combining these results with our previous results for the and Yukawa coupling terms completes the calculation of the one-loop anomalous dimension matrix for the dimensionsix operators. There are 1350 CP-even and 1149 CP-odd parameters in the dimensionsix Lagrangian for 3 generations, and our results give the entire 2499 2499 anomalous dimension matrix. We discuss how the renormalization of the dimension-six operators, and the additional renormalization of the dimension d 4 terms of the SM Lagrangian due to dimension-six operators, lays the groundwork for future precision studies of the SM EFT aimed at constraining the effects of new physics through precision measurements at the electroweak scale. As some sample applications, we discuss some aspects of the full RGE improved result for essential processes such as gg h, h and h Z, for Higgs couplings to fermions, for the precision electroweak parameters S and T, and for the operators that modify important processes in precision electroweak phenomenology, such as the three-body Higgs boson decay h Z + and triple gauge boson couplings. We discuss how the renormalization group improved results can be used to study the flavor problem in the SM EFT, and to test the minimal flavor violation (MFV) hypothesis. We briefly discuss the renormalization effects on the dipole coefficient Ce which contributes to e and to the muon and electron magnetic and electric dipole moments. © The Authors.

We show that naive dimensional analysis (NDA) is equivalent to the result that L-loop scattering amplitudes have perturbative order N= L+. δ, with a shift δ that depends on the NDA-weight of operator insertions. The NDA weight of an operator is defined in this Letter, and the general NDA formula for perturbative order N is derived. The formula is used to explain why the one-loop anomalous dimension matrix for dimension-six operators in the Standard Model effective field theory has entries with perturbative order ranging from 0 to 4. The results in this Letter are valid for an arbitrary effective field theory, and they constrain the coupling constant dependence of anomalous dimensions and scattering amplitudes in a general effective field theory. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

The principle of minimal coupling has been used in the study of Higgs boson interactions to argue that certain higher dimensional operators in the low-energy effective theory generalization of the Standard Model are suppressed by loop factors, and thus smaller than others. It also has been extensively used to analyze beyond-the-Standard-Model theories. We show that in field theory, and even in quantum mechanics, the concept of minimal coupling is ill-defined and inapplicable as a general principle, and give many pedagogical examples which illustrate this fact. We also clarify some related misconceptions about the dynamics of strongly coupled gauge theories. Many arguments in the literature on Higgs boson interactions that use minimal coupling, particularly in pseudo-Goldstone Higgs theories, are inherently flawed. © 2013 SISSA.

We calculate the order λ, λ2 and λy2 terms of the 59×59 one-loop anomalous dimension matrix of dimension-six operators, where λ and y are the Standard Model Higgs self-coupling and a generic Yukawa coupling, respectively. The dimension-six operators modify the running of the Standard Model parameters themselves, and we compute the complete one-loop result for this. We discuss how there is mixing between operators for which no direct one-particle-irreducible diagram exists, due to operator replacements by the equations of motion. © SISSA 2013.

The position space treatment of the interaction of a particle with a sharp potential step is a simple quantum-mechanical problem. In this paper we describe this configuration from another point of view, namely that of momentum space. Advantages and disadvantages of this approach are presented and a technique based on the use of distributions for treating the mathematical problems is demonstrated. Further, expressions for the eigenfunctions and the conditions for the eigenvalue are derived analytically, and the orthogonality and completeness of the solutions for k space are rigorously investigated.

- Abstract
The production of a Standard Model Higgs boson in association with two hard jets in the forward and backward regions of the detector, frequently quoted as the “vector-boson fusion” (VBF) channel, and the production of a Higgs boson in association with a W or Z boson, known as “VH production” or “Higgsstrahlung”, represent cornerstones in a comprehensive study of Higgs boson couplings at the LHC. These production channels do not only provide valuable information on the couplings of Higgs bosons to the massive gauge bosons by themselves, but also allow for the isolation of the Higgs boson decays into -lepton or bottom-quark pairs, whose investigation is essential in the Higgs boson couplings analysis. In the previous reports [7–9], state-of-the-art predictions and error estimates for the total and differential cross sections for pp ! H + 2 jets and pp ! HV ! H + 2 leptons were compiled (with V = W; Z), but the process of improving and refining predictions is still ongoing, even within the Standard Model. In this contribution we update the cross-section predictions for VBF and VH production, covering integrated total and fiducial cross sections as well as differential distributions. In detail, the presented state-of-the-art predictions include QCD corrections up to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO), electroweak (EW) corrections up to next-to-leading order (NLO), and contributions from specific partonic channels that open at higher perturbative orders, such as photon-induced collisions or gluon-fusion contributions. Apart from collecting numerical results, we give recommendations as to how to combine the individual components and to assess conservative estimates of remaining theoretical uncertainties. Moreover, issues connected to the matching and the impact of parton showers (PS) are discussed.
