As hardware architectures are evolving in the push towards exascale, developing Computational Science and Engineering (CSE) applications depend on performance portable approaches for sustainable software development. This paper describes one aspect of performance portability with respect to developing a portable library of kernels that serve the needs of several CSE applications and software frameworks. We describe Kokkos Kernels, a library of kernels for sparse linear algebra, dense linear algebra and graph kernels. We describe the design principles of such a library and demonstrate portable performance of the library using some selected kernels. Specifically, we demonstrate the performance of four sparse kernels, three dense batched kernels, two graph kernels and one team level algorithm.

Multi-dimensional arrays are ubiquitous in high-performance computing (HPC), but their absence from the C++ language standard is a long-standing and well-known limitation of their use for HPC. This paper describes the design and implementation of mdspan, a proposed C++ standard multidimensional array view (planned for inclusion in C++23). The proposal is largely inspired by work done in the Kokkos project---a C++ performance-portable programming model deployed by numerous HPC institutions to prepare their code base for exascale-class supercomputing systems. This paper describes the final design of mdspan after a five-year process to achieve consensus in the C++ community. In particular, we will lay out how the design addresses some of the core challenges of performance-portable programming, and how its customization points allow a seamless extension into areas not currently addressed by the C++ Standard but which are of critical importance in the heterogeneous computing world of today's systems. Finally, we have provided a production-quality implementation of the proposal in its current form. This work includes several benchmarks of this implementation aimed at demonstrating the zero-overhead nature of the modern design.

We present a new interatomic potential for solids and liquids called Spectral Neighbor Analysis Potential (SNAP). The SNAP potential has a very general form and uses machine-learning techniques to reproduce the energies, forces, and stress tensors of a large set of small configurations of atoms, which are obtained using high-accuracy quantum electronic structure (QM) calculations. The local environment of each atom is characterized by a set of bispectrum components of the local neighbor density projected on to a basis of hyperspherical harmonics in four dimensions. The bispectrum components are the same bond-orientational order parameters employed by the GAP potential [arXiv:0910.1019]. The SNAP potential, unlike GAP, assumes a linear relationship between atom energy and bispectrum components. The linear SNAP coefficients are determined using weighted least-squares linear regression against the full QM training set. This allows the SNAP potential to be fit in a robust, automated manner to large QM data sets using many bispectrum coefficients.

We present a GPU implementation of LAMMPS, a widely-used parallel molecular dynamics (MD) software package, and show 5x to 13x single node speedups versus the CPU-only version of LAMMPS. This new CUDA package for LAMMPS also enables multi-GPU simulation on hybrid heterogeneous clusters, using MPI for inter-node communication, CUDA kernels on the GPU for all methods working with particle data, and standard LAMMPS C++ code for CPU execution. Cell and neighbor list approaches are compared for best performance on GPUs, with thread-per-atom and block-per-atom neighbor list variants showing best performance at low and high neighbor counts, respectively. Computational performance results of GPU-enabled LAMMPS are presented for a variety of materials classes (e.g. biomolecules, polymers, metals, semiconductors), along with a speed comparison versus other available GPU-enabled MD software.
