Based on OMI/MLS data (2005–2020) and Community Earth System Model (CESM2) simulated results (2001–2020), annual variation trends of tropospheric column ozone (TCO) in the recent two decades are explored, and the separate impacts of meteorological conditions and emissions on TCO are quantified. The stratospheric ozone tracer (O3S) is used to quantify the contribution of stratospheric ozone to the trend of TCO. The evaluation shows that the simulated results capture the spatial-temporal distributions and the trends of tropospheric column ozone well. Over the East Asia and Southeast Asia regions, TCO is increasing, with a rate of ~0.2 DU/yr, which is primarily attributed to the emission changes in ozone precursors, nitrogen oxide (NOx) and volatile organic chemicals (VOCs). But the changes in meteorological conditions weaken the increase in TCO, even leading to a decrease in East Asia in spring and summer. TCO is decreasing in the middle and high latitudes of the southern hemisphere, which is mainly attributed to the changes in meteorological conditions. The increasing rates are the highest in autumn, especially over North America, East Asia, Europe and South of East Asia, with rate values of 0.20, 0.31, 0.17, and 0.32 DU/yr, respectively. Over the equatorial region, the contribution of stratospheric ozone to TCO is below 10 DU, and shows a weak positive trend of ~0.2 DU/yr. In the latitude of ~30°N/S, the stratospheric contribution is high, ~25 DU, and is affected by the sinking branch of the Brewer–Dobson circulation and stratosphere–troposphere exchange in the vicinity of tropical jet stream. The stratospheric contribution to TCO in the north of 30°N is significantly decreasing (~0.6 DU/yr) under the influence of meteorological conditions. Changes in emissions weaken the decrease in stratospheric contributions in the north of 30°N and enhance the increase in 30°S–30°N significantly. The trends of stratospheric contributions on TCO partly explain the trends of TCO which are mostly affected by the change in emissions. The positive trend of tropospheric column ozone (TCO) in China has been confirmed by numerous observations, particularly in the rapidly developing city clusters such as Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH), the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) and the Pearl River Delta (PRD). An unignorable but poorly known function may be played by the Brewer-Dobson circulation (BDC) and the Hadley circulation (HC), both of which are in their strengthening phase. This study discusses their connection to TCO in these three city clusters based on a novel and powerful causal analysis method Convergent Cross Mapping (CCM). It revealed that both BDC and HC exerted substantial causal effects on the variations of the TCO in BTH, the YRD, and the PRD. The upwelling moving northward in the summer substantially lowered TCO in the PRD, contributing to the difference in the TCO annual cycle characteristics between northern and southern China. Besides, CCM distinguished that hemispheric HC impacts TCO greatly more than total HC, and the most essential branches of BDC were stratospheric or shallow branches. The BDC and HC indices determined by CCM were used for building a multiple linear regression model, which assessed their importance for long-term changes in regional TCO. The intensity of BDC is the most important influencing factor in each region, particularly in the YRD. BTH is mainly affected by the intensity of the two meridian circulations. The influence of the widths of meridional circulation upwellings on TCO in the PRD cannot be ignored. This study analyzes tropospheric column ozone variability in the southern hemisphere as a function of ozone transport from the stratosphere to the troposphere and photochemical formation. Geographically, the study area was located in the mid-latitudes in South America (33° S), to the west of the Andes mountain range, in an area highly susceptible to stratospheric intrusions. Monthly ozonesonde measurements were recorded in Colina to ascertain seasonal vertical ozone distribution from the surface to the stratosphere between September 2010 and May 2012. Vertical distribution of the tropospheric ozone was measured in Talagante for fronts crossing from west to east in central Chile, during two periods in September 2014 and March 2015. These periods were significantly different in terms of the stratospheric ozone annual cycle and height of the tropopause. Our results showed rapid increases of approximately 50% in the tropospheric column ozone at time intervals shorter than 1 week. At the surface level, unusually enhanced ozone levels up to 10 parts per billion volume (ppbv) were observed during nighttime. Additionally, stratosphere-troposphere exchange (STE) preferentially occurred in spring and winter, with higher contribution during spring when the tropospheric column ozone attained its maximum concentration. These results provide valuable information regarding tropospheric ozone, a major local and global climate pollutant, to decision makers. In addition, they provide the research community with experimental data from the southern hemisphere, which helps bridge knowledge gaps in a region that has been rarely studied by national and international scientific communities. Abstract Tropospheric ozone plays a major role in Earth’s atmospheric chemistry processes and also acts as an air pollutant and greenhouse gas. Due to its short lifetime, and dependence on sunlight and precursor emissions from natural and anthropogenic sources, tropospheric ozone’s abundance is highly variable in space and time on seasonal, interannual and decadal time-scales. Recent, and sometimes rapid, changes in observed ozone mixing ratios and ozone precursor emissions inspired us to produce this up-to-date overview of tropospheric ozone’s global distribution and trends. Much of the text is a synthesis of in situ and remotely sensed ozone observations reported in the peer-reviewed literature, but we also include some new and extended analyses using well-known and referenced datasets to draw connections between ozone trends and distributions in different regions of the world. In addition, we provide a brief evaluation of the accuracy of rural or remote surface ozone trends calculated by three state-of-the-science chemistry-climate models, the tools used by scientists to fill the gaps in our knowledge of global tropospheric ozone distribution and trends.

Abstract: An empirical orthogonal function (EOF) analysis is applied to two different data sets of tropospheric column ozone (TCO) and observed lightning flash rates over the tropical Atlantic for the period of 1996–2000. The first two dominant EOF modes of TCO values, explaining more than 65% of total variance are characterized by the seasonal cycle. The time series of EOF1 and EOF2 of TCO values are in phase with those of the EOF2 (16%) and EOF1 (63%) of the lightning, respectively. These relationships imply the influence of lightning on the tropical ozone maximum and the tropical ozone paradox. Moreover, the spatial distribution of the EOF modes and the horizontal wind field in the upper troposphere show that the highest lightning flash rates are located upstream of the region where high TCO values are found throughout the year.
