In a commercial fishery, some fish are classified as low-value, but their classification varies in different countries. The aim of this study was to determine the abundance, contribution, and dominance of low-value fish species, such as Abramis brama < 1000 g, Alburnus alburnus, Blicca bjoerkna, Gymnocephalus cernua, Perca fluviatilis < 100 g, Rutilus rutilus < 200 g, and Scardinius erythrophthalmus < 200 g, in 145 Polish lakes of different areas, depths, and trophic statuses situated in the northern and central parts of Poland in 2021. Perca fluviatilis and R. rutilus were the most frequent low-value species (100% and 99%, respectively). The contribution of all low-value fish to the total biomass of caught fish was relatively high, ranging from 37% in the mesotrophic lake to 100% in the eutrophic lake (mean of 77 ± 14%). Lakes in which the contribution of low-value species exceeded 90% were relatively numerous (24 lakes, 17% of the studied lakes). Among a total of about 437.5 thousand low-value fish, 261 thousand specimens (60%) had a body weight of below 10 g. All low-value fish species, except for P. fluviatilis and S. erythrophthalmus, were related to the studied environmental variables. The relative biomass of these species increased with increasing lake productivity, while it decreased with the increasing maximum and mean depth of the studied lakes. The high contribution of low-value fish to the total biomass in many lakes indicates the need for the constant monitoring of the abundance and structure of fish communities and the use of appropriate actions (biomanipulation and stocking with piscivorous fish species) to improve the ecological condition of lakes. The occurrence, abundance, contribution, and size structure of protected and alien fish species were studied in 535 lakes situated in the northern and central parts of Poland in 2014-2021. We hypothesised that protected fish species, due to their status, would be rare in terms of abundance within certain lakes and/or less distributed. Four protected (Cottus poecilopus, Cobitis taenia, Misgurnus fossilis , and Rhodeus amarus) and eight alien species of fish (Ctenopharyngodon idella, Neogobius fluviatilis, Pseudorasbora parva, Acipenser baerii, Carassius gibelio, Ameiurus nebulosus, Hypophthalmichthys molitrix , and Cyprinus carpio) were identified in the studied lakes. Among protected species, the most common and frequent were R. amarus (65% of the studied lakes) and C. taenia (47% of the studied lakes). Other two species (C. poecilopus and M. fossilis) were recorded in one (0.2%) and 18 lakes (3.4%), respectively. Alien species were most often represented by C. gibelio , which occurred in 96 lakes (18% of the studied lakes). The presence of the remaining seven alien species was found in not many lakes (0.2-5.2% of the studied lakes). The abundance of C. gibelio was positively, while A. nebulosus was negatively related to the trophic state of lakes. Cobitis taenia was positively correlated with morphometric parameters of lakes (area and maximum depth). Study was conducted on a sample consisting of 38 mouflon horns from hunting grounds in Serbia. The parameters that were analyzed (length of the left horn, length of the right horn, circumference of the horns, spread of the horns, color of the horns, ring and curvature) were measured according to the propositions adopted by the The International Council for Game and Wildlife. The aim of the paper was to determine the absolute and mean values of the length of the left horn and of the right horn, the circumference of the horns, span of the horns, annularity and curve of the horns, as well as the existence of mutual dependence between certain parameters of mouflon trophies. Using the method of descriptive statistics, the mean values of the length of the left and right horns were obtained. Results showed that the right horn was slightly more developed in the observed population. Namely, the mean value of the length of the right horn is larger, while the mean values of the circumference of the left and right are almost the same. The results of Pearson's correlation showed a statistically significant positive correlation between certain morphometric parameters of the horns, such as the length of the horns and the circumference of horn in the second and in the third third distance from the base. A positive correlation was also observed between curvature of horns and circumference in the first and second thirds, as well as between curvature of horns and horn span. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The composition of biofilm formed on artificial microplastics (MPs) during the summer stagnation was studied in a field experiment at five lakes with different trophy. After a two-month incubation of MPs, molecular analyses were carried out to isolate the genetic material of bacteria present in the biofilm. Next-generation sequencing of 16S rRNA genes was performed to identify species. Bacterial abundance was also determined in the lake water (2.31 – 4.26 Mcell ml−1) and in the water from experimental baskets containing MPs (0.58 – 4.68 Mcell ml−1). The biofilm formed on the MPs was analysed at various systematic levels, including phylum, family, class, genus, and species. A total of 18 species were identified, with a high percentage of the Proteobacteria phylum noted. This may indicate that this group favours MPs regardless of the trophic level. In this study, the presence of bacteria with the ability to degrade polymers, such as Pseudomonas putida , was observed, as well as Lacibacterium aquatile , which can indicate water quality. Among the other identified bacterial species, several pathogens were found, including Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Candidatus Saccharibacteria , and Candidatus Cardinium , which may indicate anthropogenic pollution. The presence of E. coli was detected on MPs in each of the studied lakes, suggesting that MPs may serve as a new vector for dangerous pathogens, regardless of trophic status. Despite the two-month experiment, no statistically significant differences in bacterial species diversity (as measured by alpha and beta indices) were observed between lakes with different trophy. Effective fisheries management requires an understanding of human dimensions. This study elicited the salient motivations for recreational blue swimmer crab and black bream fishing in Western Australia and whether these views differed depending on the fishing location and/or the characteristics of the fisher. Crab fishers were strongly consumption-orientated and aimed to "catch big crabs" and "catch enough crabs to eat". Furthermore, 91% consumed their catch, with only 2% practicing catch-and-release fishing. In contrast, 81% of black bream fishers did so for the sport/challenge, with the strongest motivation being to catch a bream considerably above legal size and with food only selected by 15% of respondents; most fishers released caught fish. The marked differences between the fisheries for the two species, which co-occur in the same estuaries, are likely driven by the accessible nature of the crab fishery, ease of catching crabs, the low cost of fishing equipment, and their taste. Fishing for black bream, however, requires more expensive equipment, patience, and a greater skill level. Fishers considered crabbing to be as important as other fishing and outdoor activities, whereas bream fishers considered bream fishing considerably more important, reflecting the trophy nature of this fishery. To work with images of atrocity is a fraught project. Sedimented constructs shaped through racist and settler colonial violence continue to define the production and consumption of the visual, as well as memory practice and scopic politics. These retinal sedimentations must be looked at plainly and addressed openly, to name the ways in which history and identity shape the function of the eye. I turn to the understudied visual archive of German colonialism in South West Africa, with an emphasis on colonial photography, with the aim of tying the visuality of colonial violence in German South West Africa to broader studies of colonial photography, images of racial violence, and the ways in which these images circulated as discourse. I am particularly concerned with the location of witnessing, and the ways in which things look differently from different positions—what I refer to through the concept of parallax—and the effects of this on visual consumption. Images of violence travel, through a visceral witnessing that can be grotesquely pornographic—in the words of Claudia Rankine, “the dead body as an object that satisfies an illicit desire”—or evidentiary. I use viscerality in this context to think about a methodology of witnessing that attends to embodiment, experience, and feeling. The resignification of images, however didactic and captioned, depends on the eye and the gut of the viewer—the transhistorical viewer is not a passive or innocent witness. This is especially important in the context of the pornotroping tendency of white supremacist culture to fetishize the image, particularly of Black injury and death, and the ability of images of violence to re-traumatize survivors.

Background: Hippocampal atrophy in cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) has been reported to be similar to that in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Objective: To evaluate if CAA pathology partly mediates reduced hippocampal volume in patients with AD. Methods: Patients with a clinical diagnosis of AD and neuropathological confirmation of AD+/-CAA in the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center database were included in the study. The volumes of temporal lobe structures were calculated on T1-weighted imaging (T1-MRI) using automated FreeSurfer software, from images acquired on average 5 years prior to death. Multivariate regression analysis was performed to compare brain volumes in four CAA groups. The hippocampal volume on T1-MRI was correlated with Clinical Dementia Rating sum of boxes (CDRsb) score, apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotype, and hippocampal atrophy at autopsy. Results: The study included 231 patients with no (n = 45), mild (n = 70), moderate (n = 67), and severe (n = 49) CAA. Among the four CAA groups, patients with severe CAA had a smaller mean left hippocampal volume (p = 0.023) but this was not significant when adjusted for APOE ɛ4 (p = 0.07). The left hippocampal volume on MRI correlated significantly with the hippocampal atrophy grading on neuropathology (p = 0.0003). Among patients with severe CAA, the left hippocampal volume on T1-MRI: (a) decreased with an increase in the number of APOE ɛ4 alleles (p = 0.04); but (b) had no evidence of correlation with CDRsb score (p = 0.57). Conclusion: Severe CAA was associated with smaller left hippocampal volume on T1-MRI up to five years prior to death among patients with neuropathologically confirmed AD. Global warming, eutrophication, fisheries overexploitation, species invasions, and habitat loss are the major threats to freshwater biodiversity. The aim of this study was to determine the species richness and diversity of fish in 535 Polish lakes of different morphometry (area of more than 50 ha and a maximum depth ranging from 0.4 to 108.5 m) and trophic status (from oligotrophy to hypereutrophy). A total of 39 fish species were found in the studied lakes, among which eight species were alien invasive. The Shannon diversity index varied between 0 and 2.04.The most common and frequent species were Rutilus rutilus (99.8% frequency) and Perca fluviatilis (99.6% frequency). Ten fish species, including five alien ones, were characterized by a very low frequency (<1%). The number of fish species in single lakes ranged from 1 to 19. In most of the studied lakes, 11 and 12 species (104 and 108 lakes, respectively) were caught. The richest taxonomic composition (19 species) was recorded in the meso-eutrophic lake with an area of 80 ha and a maximum depth of 34.4 m, slightly poorer (18 species) in the hypereutrophic lake with an area of 168 ha and a maximum depth of 2.7 m. The poorest taxonomic composition (one species) was found in a lake with low conductivity and circumneutral pH. Statistical analysis showed that the number of fish species decreased with increasing eutrophication conditions of the studied lakes, while it increased with an increasing area and the maximum depth of these lakes. Hunting trophies are shown to be undergoing socialization in photos. They are no longer personal souvenirs that serve a purely introspective function for the individual. Hunting photos are discussed, critiqued, and conspicuously displayed across online and print platforms. They are shared between hunters and lately also between hunters and the public. Criteria for good hunting photos reflect the changing modality and times in which photos are shared. The ways hunters stage, compose, and manipulate their hunting tableaux evolve to address external and internal pressures regarding their representation. This evolution is illustrated in qualitative interviews with hunting magazine editors and hunting photographers in Sweden, as well as review of 320 hunting magazine covers from 1960s to today. To this new class of hunter-artists, the presentation of the quarry as object or sovereign wildlife changes the hunting tableau and also responds to contested ideals of authenticity in nature. The severed heads are rarely highlighted in the chanson de egste. Aspremont, which tells the story of Charlemagne’s conquest of southern Italy, is an exception : the care and luxury of detail with which the severed heads of the defeated Saracens are presented puts us on the track of the valorization of this motif in Arthurian literature. Yet the link between the two materials is inscribed at the very heart of the song, since the juggler accompanying Charlemagne’s expedition is from Brittany and is called Graelent. So could not the severed Saracen heads be interpreted in the light of the severed head presented to Peredur in the eponymous Breton novel ?

The aim of this study was to determine the change in the value of morpho-metric parameters of antlers and the total trophy score in relation to the age of roe deer (Capreolus capreolus L.). The study was conducted on 228 roe deer trophies from the "Barajevska reka" hunting ground in Serbia, aged one to seven years. From the second to the fourth year, the growth of antlers was the most intense, and the differences compared to one year old animals were significant (P 0.05). From the second to the fifth year, a gradual increase in antler weight (from 192.2 ± 30.41 g to 221.9 ± 61.86 g) and antler volume (from 74 cm3 to 90 cm3 ) was observed, with the highest values of antler weight (291.8 ± 58.43 g and 319.1 ± 98.89 g, respectively) and antler volume (123.8 cm3 and 121.2 cm3) in six and seven year old animals. During research of moose antlers from Ukraine, the following measurements were taken: coverage of the socket, circumference at a distance of 4 cm from the outer edge of the socket, length of each antler on the posterior curved side between the ends of the most remote upper and lower sprouts, number of sprouts at each corner, length of each spindle on the back side from the base to the end, circumference of each process in the middle, distance between the anterior processes, maximum distance between the longest branches in the middle part, distance between the rear branches, width of the antler blade at the widest point. Given that in any population antlers of European adult moose are typical, intermediate, and deer-like, their measurements were taken respectively. The first postnatal antlers of moose from Ukraine reach 29.0 ± 2.55 cm in length, having in its composition 1–2 processes with a maximum width of 52.0–72.4 cm. The second antlers have 2–4 processes. The length of most of them (56.7 %) varies within 10–20 cm. Three-year-old animals, in comparison with the two-year-old ones, increase by 2 times the average length of the antler, by 1.8 times the width of the sockets and by 1.5 times the maximum antler width (71–117.3 cm). The dimensional characteristics of antlers in young moose are characterized by a considerable dynamics. The highest variation concerns the length of the processes, their number and circumference in the middle part, as well as the coverage of the sockets. The length of adult antlers is 40.1–98.0 cm, the width of the shovel is 6.0–24.2 cm, the girth of the trunk is 12.3–20.3 cm, and the maximum width is 72.3–146.2 cm. For a mass of 6.92–11.14 kg they have a low trophy quality: 191.30–303.51 points, which is the result of the absence of population management.

Introduction: The TROPHY registry has been established to conduct an international multicenter prospective data collection on the surgical management of neonatal intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH)-related hydrocephalus to possibly contribute to future guidelines. The registry allows comparing the techniques established to treat hydrocephalus, such as external ventricular drainage (EVD), ventricular access device (VAD), ventricular subgaleal shunt (VSGS), and neuroendoscopic lavage (NEL). This first status report of the registry presents the results of the standard of care survey of participating centers assessed upon online registration. Methods: On the standard of treatment forms, each center indicated the institutional protocol of interventions performed for neonatal post-hemorrhagic hydrocephalus (nPHH) for a time period of 2 years (Y1 and Y2) before starting the active participation in the registry. In addition, the amount of patients enrolled so far and allocated to a treatment approach are reported. Results: According to the standard of treatment forms completed by 56 registered centers, fewer EVDs (Y1 55% Y2 46%) were used while more centers have implemented NEL (Y1 39%; Y2 52%) to treat nPHH. VAD (Y1 66%; Y2 66%) and VSGS (Y1 42%; Y2 41%) were used at a consistent rate during the 2 years. The majority of the centers used at least two different techniques to treat nPHH (43%), while 27% used only one technique, 21% used three, and 7% used even four different techniques. Patient data of 110 infants treated surgically between 9/2018 and 2/2021 (13% EVD, 15% VAD, 30% VSGS, and 43% NEL) were contributed by 29 centers. Conclusions: Our results emphasize the varying strategies used for the treatment of nPHH. The international TROPHY registry has entered into a phase of growing patient recruitment. In 1970–2010, during the period of spring circulation and summer stagnation, hydrochemical studies were conducted in Lake Ińsko (Western Pomeranian Lake Region, Poland) with determination of the lake susceptibility to degradation and trophic changes. Also, the effect of the catchment area on the water quality in this waterbody was assessed. The waters of the study lake were characterised by low static index, which is an additional indicator of low dynamics of water masses, and low susceptibility to degradation. In spite of this, significant changes in the lake quality and trophy were observed. The hydrochemical parameters defining water quality of the study lake continued to improve. In the 70’s, the water quality was at the border of class II and III, while in 2006 and 2010 it reached the level characteristic for class I waters. Moreover, in the 70’s and 80’s of the previous century, Lake Ińsko Duże was a mesotrophic lake. Then, an increase in the lake trophy was observed, resulting in signs of eutrophy. At the end of the 90’s and in the first decade of the 21st century, the study lake returned to the state of mesotrophy. No restoration works were undertaken in Lake Ińsko in the study period. The improvement in water quality, called oligotrophication, resulted most probably from the lake reaction to changes in the soil use in the catchment area, since fewer phosphorus and nitrogen compounds flow into the lake, and also from the regulation of the wastewater management in the town of Ińsko. Mass occurrence of green algae of the genus Ulva in the form of algal blooms (known as “green tides”) is often associated with high concentrations of biogens in the water. Therefore, Ulva species are most often used in monitoring seawater trophy and far less frequently freshwater trophy. In Europe, the biomonitoring of river ecosystems is based on aquatic plants. According to the River Macrophyte Index (RMI), river populations of Ulva macroalgae (only tubular Enteromorpha-like Ulva) are considered good indicators for eutrophic waters. This paper analyses the legitimacy of using U. pilifera as a trophy indicator in the case of ponds. It has been noted that freshwater populations of U. pilifera are much more common in lakes, dammed reservoirs, or ponds than in rivers. In this study, analysed populations of U. pilifera originated from 14 ponds located in central Poland. Data analysis relied on the Carlson Trophic State Index (CTSI), which was compared with other known trophic indices. According to CTSI values, U. pilifera was most common in eutrophic ponds, where the mean concentrations of ammonium nitrogen, nitrates, total phosphorus, and chlorophyll a reached 581, 241, 212, and 20 µg·L−1, respectively. The results indicate that U. pilifera can be considered a bioindicator for eutrophic waters (50–70 of CTSI). It would therefore be appropriate to introduce U. pilifera as part of biomonitoring conducted in small bodies of water. Major arguments in favour of practical application of U. pilifera are: (i) it is a large macroalga, the thalli of which can reach a length of > 1.0 m, (ii) it is an easy-to-identify species; even by non-experts (it is characterized by a distinctive tubular shape of the thallus), and (iii) it occurs in bulk in conditions of eutrophy, creating an easily observable bloom.

Deer head and antlers are specific parts of the animal body embedded with complex symbolic implications and as pars pro toto represent the entire animal. Certain cultural practices of animal objectification within our contemporary society denote these parts of animals’ bodies as trophies, decorations, and designed objects, which then become markers of individual human identities, lifestyles, and particular living spaces. However, such new meanings inscribed into these animal materialities do not necessarily classify them as passive objects. It has been acknowledged that material culture objects continually transform in meanings through their own accumulative biographies.

The area of population of wild red deer in the NE Europe in the 21st century is similar to the one dating back to the last meltdowd period of the ice age almost 8000 years ago. The very name of the animal in the Latvian language -- "briedis" has come in use quite recently -- in the 2nd half of the 19th century. Until that the animal both in Latvia and Lithuania was named "alnis" a common word in the Baltic language group generally bearing the meaning of being well-built with a strong body. The repopulation and reintroduction of the red deer in Latvia has much to do with German hunting traditions being followed still today. There are around 60 red deer farms in Latvia nowadays, the number of animals reaching almost 10000. Mostly the red deer farming seeks to provide trophees and live-stock markets. Animals are registered in herds and individually, marking them with ear tags. All the rules for well-being of farm animals are fully applied to the red deer farming as well. Farming practices involve getting the originally wild animals used to farming-based processes and interaction with humans. Thus it is possible to conclude that the red deer is an animal which is undergoing the domestication process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the study was to show which morphometric traits of lakes influence the development of the rush zone of lakes and how buffer zone management influences analyzed features of rushes. We also checked what analyzed features of rushes influence the trophy of the lake, or the type of its supply. The average area inhabited by helophytes in studied lakes of the Łęczna-Włodawa Lake District was 19% among all lakes. The lowest values of the analyzed features of rushes were found in lakes without inflow and outflow. Therefore, favourable conditions are found in inlet lakes, fed mostly with fertile waters from the Wieprz-Krzna Canal. We confirmed the hypothesis that the natural way of management of the buffer zone, the largest lakes of the Łęczna-Włodawa Lake District, generates the highest values of the studied features of emergent macrophytes. Therefore, it is the best form of their development. In addition, among the morphometric features of lakes the most important impact on the development of rushes had the type of feeding the lake, while the type of lake use turned out to be irrelevant. Among the physico-chemical parameters of water, the visibility and pH of the water had a significant influence on the features of the rushes, while the electrolytic conductivity was irrelevant. This study focused on zooplankton structure, biodiversity, relationship between a biotic parameters and zooplankton variation, and trophy state of the Persian Gulf Martyrs Lake (Chitgar-Tehran). Based on the lake condition, samples were collected by Juday net at the 5 stations between 2013 and 2014. This study identified 36 zooplankton taxa comprised of Arthropoda (6 genus), Protozoa (6 genus), Rotatoria (20 genus), Nematoda (1 genus), Gastrotricha (2 genus) and Oligochaeta (1 genus). Furthermore, the first record of the freshwater jellyfish Craspedacusta sp. in Iran, with size group of 15-20 mm in diameter in September is reported in the Chitgar lake. The Rotatoria abundance average was measured 61 ±18 ind.l-1 in the lake. The Nematoda, Gastrotricha and Oligochaeta taxa were measured the lowest abundance (< 1 ind.l-1) in this study. The annual average zooplankton abundance was measured as 72±18 ind.l-1. The PCA displayed, the Rotatoria Trichocerca sp. and Polyarthera sp. were dominated with high components loading, low variance and high abundance. The CCA showed, there was no correlation between Rotatoria abundance and a biotic parameters. Based on the zooplankton structure and bio-indicator, the lake situation is in the meso-oligotrophic category. Thus, it is might be increased eutrophication trend due to no management and no aquatic control in this ecosystem.

This study focused on phytoplankton structure, a biotic limiting factors in phytoplankton bloom at the 5 stations between 2013 and 2014 in the Chitgar Lake. This study identified 35 phytoplankton taxa comprised of Diatoms (12 genus), Chlorophyta (15 genus), Cyanophyta (4 genus), dinoflagellates (2 genus) and chrysophytes (1 genus) in the lake. The finding showed, the Diatom abundance dominate (average of 2060000 ± 230000 cells.l-1) in the Chitgar Lake. The annual average phytoplankton abundance was calculated as 2550000± 304000, with the maximum value recorded in February 2013 (4400000 ± 450000 cell. l-1). The PCA analysis displayed, the Diatoms Cyclotella sp., Achnanthes sp. and Chrysophta Dinobryon sp. were dominated in the study period. Based on the CCA analyses, total nitrogen and water temperature were the significant parameters to increase Cyanophyta and Dinoflagellata abundance in the Chitgar Lake. In overall, the lowest phytoplankton abundance recorded in the Chitgar Lake as compared with other lakes which is an Oligotrophic with the latest trophy state lake.

Summer field research and chemical analyses in 2015 provided the basis for the presentation of the trophic status of waters of 28 lakes of the Suwałki Landscape Park in NE Poland, located in the catchment of the River Neman, in the Natura 2000 area – Ostoja Jeleniewska. Lakes Hańcza and Szurpiły are currently mesotrophic ecosystems. The remaining lakes are moderately eutrophic, while four lakes in the group, in addition to anaerobic hypolimnion, have infertile epilimnion similar to that of mesotrophic lakes. Lake Hańcza shows considerable multiannual dynamics of water fertility, periodically reaching a status approximate to eutrophy. In Lake Szurpiły and the majority of smaller lakes of the Suwałki Landscape Park, reduced precipitation in 2015 resulted in an inconsiderable decrease in trophic status. The lakes are under the strong influence of their catchment area, as confirmed by statistically significant correlations between TSI and the Ohle and Schindler ratios. Lakes Kluczysko and Kopane currently remain the most fertile lakes in the Park. Unless rapidly developing cattle breeding leads to excessive fertilisation of waters in the catchment, the forecasted variability of weather conditions during global climate transformations will lead to fluctuations in the fertility of the majority of the analysed lakes at the threshold of meso- and eutrophy. A hypothesis is also stated regarding the considerable role of groundwater alimentation and short retention time in the maintenance of higher than average resources of silica in limnic waters.

Markhor Capra falconeri, the national animal of Pakistan, is globally recognized as endangered. The current study was conducted to find the population size, structure and the contribution of trophy hunting in conservation and development of Kashmir Markhor (Capra falconeri cashmiriensis) in Kiagah valley Kohistan. Point count method was used to collect data during February 2016 and 2018. The population recorded was 213 and 291 individuals in 2016 and 2018 respectively. Out of 213 individuals, 12 were adult male, 57 were female, while Young males (between age of 3 to 7 years) were 28, Yearlings (both male and female between 1 to 3 year) were 59, Kids (less than 1 year) were 33 and 40 were unknown (Markhor could not be classified by age and sex). The total density/Km2 area in 2016 was 4.438 individuals/km2 and average sex and age wise ratios; male to female ratio (M*: F**) was 1:4.75 and kids to female (K*****: F**) ratio was 1:1.727. While out of 291 individuals, 19 were adult male, 95 were female, while Yong males (between age of 3 to 7 years) were 51, Yearlings (both male and female between 1 to 3 year) were 64, kids (less than 1 year) were 50 and 12 were unknown (Markhor could not be classified by age and sex) individuals. The total density/Km2 area in 2018 was 6.063 individuals/km2 and Average sex and age wise ratios; male to female ratio (M*: F**) was 1:5 and kids to female (K*****: F**) ratio was 1:1.9. Highlights • Stocking larger pre-recruited largemouth bass bypasses some of the density dependent mortality of the juvenile period and can lead to greater abundance of catchable fish. • Common stocking practices perform poorly at maintaining both trophy fisheries and wild spawner biomass. • Stocking small fingerlings is not effective at improving fish abundance under most conditions, but restocking of small fish can help rebuild depleted populations. • Stocking strategies should be designed and implemented according to specific management objectives. Abstract Stock enhancement is a practiced management strategy for sustaining and rebuilding largemouth bass fisheries in Florida and throughout their native and introduced range. However, quantitative assessment comparing efficacy of stocking to traditional management approaches are rare. We adapt an age-structured population model that explicitly represents the size and density-dependent effects on mortality and somatic growth to assess potential outcomes of stocking largemouth bass relative to traditional length-based harvest regulations. We explore two management situations in which stocking might be considered: maintaining high abundance in an exploited population and rebuilding a population that has been depleted. We find that different stocking scenarios comprised of combinations of size, density, and duration at which fish were stocked influence three fishery response metrics: abundance of catchable fish, abundance of trophy-sized fish and relative wild spawner biomass. Stocking larger juveniles can bypass some of the compensatory density dependence and yield a net augmentation of total abundance of catchable largemouth bass, but usually leads to a reduction in the abundance of the wild population and the number of trophy-sized bass. We find enhancements of small (25 mm) fingerlings fail to help maintain or augment wild populations, but could be effective at rebuilding depleted bass populations and may replace the need for effort restriction. Our study suggests stocking is a comparatively powerful tool for achieving high catch rates in largemouth bass fisheries, but may perform poorly at meeting other objectives of largemouth bass management such as production of trophy fish. Language—often said to set human beings apart from other animals—has resisted explanation in terms of evolution. Language has—among others—two fundamental and distinctive features: syntax and the ability to express non-present actions and events. We suggest that the relation between this representation (of non-present action) and syntax can be analyzed as a relation between a function and a structure to fulfill this function. The strategy of the paper is to ask if there is any evidence of pre-linguistic communication that fulfills the function of communicating an absent action. We identify a structural similarity between understanding indexes of past actions of conspecifics (who did what to whom) and one of the simplest and most paradigmatic linguistic syntactic patterns – that of the simple transitive sentence. When a human being infers past events from an index (i.e., a trace, the conditions of a conspecifics or an animal, a constellation or an object) the interpreters' comprehension must rely on concepts similar in structure and function to the 'thematic roles' believed to underpin the comprehension of linguistic syntax: in his or her mind the idea of a past action or event emerges along with thematic role-like concepts; in the case of the presentation of, e.g., a hunting trophy, the presenter could be understood to be an agent (subject) and the trophy a patient (direct object), while the past action killed is implied by the condition of the object and its possession by the presenter. We discuss whether both the presentation of a trophy and linguistic syntax might have emerged independently while having the same function (to represent a past action) or whether the presentation of an index of a deed could constitute a precursor of language. Victory monuments played a vital role in the life of individuals and the civilisation as a whole in ancient Greece. They were an embodied celebration and memorial, both of a specific triumph and of military conflict as such, keeping alive the memory of past actions that would otherwise be forgotten. They carried a message of success both for the present era and for future generations, who thus found a focus in which to admire and honour the courage of their ancestors. The Greeks believed that just as the gods directed and influenced individual human lives, they also decided on the outcomes of conflicts and they therefore considered it their duty to give thanks to them. At first, they gave thanks immediately after a battle by erecting a tropaion on the battlefield, which from the time of the Greek-Persian Wars began to be built from more durable materials. A further gesture was made later by dedicating other weapons captured from the enemy to the gods either at a Pan-Hellenic sanctuary such as Delphi, Olympia or Isthmia, or at a local temple. This was an established custom that was supposed to ensure the support and favour of the gods in subsequent conflicts. Another custom was that a certain period after the end of a war, permanent monuments would be erected by the winning side away from the battlefield and dedicated to a specific god - either within the structure of the victorious polis or at a sanctuary. This study presents the diversity and structure of pelagic zooplankton in north-eastern Poland. The research was conducted in 47 lakes with different trophic conditions in the middle of summer. Samples were collected close to the deepest part of the lakes to avoid the diverse benthic and littoral zones. We found 119 zooplankton species of which 32 were Cladocera, 16 were Cyclopoida, 4 were Calanoida, and 67 were Rotifera. We determined which species occurred most frequently in the region, as well as the species that were characteristic of different trophic conditions. We also recorded the presence of eight cold-adapted species which some of them are considered as glacial relicts (e.g., Eurytemora lacustris, Heterocope appendiculata, Cyclops lacustris). Our research revealed potential glacial refugia for planktonic species in 14 lakes of NE Poland. Our study suggests that the presence of stenotherm species may be an excellent indicator of the ecological status of deep lakes and could be considered in lake monitoring programs. Furthermore, we did not find Bythotrephes longimanus which has been reported from Poland. Instead, we found that B. brevimanus was the most common representative of the genus in the study area.

The aim of the study was to compare cyanobacterial and algal assemblages occurring in ornithocoprophilous habitats formed under the influence of two seabird colonies (mixed colony of piscivorous Uria lomvia and Rissa tridactyla and planktivorous Alle alle) nesting on the southwest side of Hornsund (Spitsbergen). Various influences of the bird colonies (e.g. surface trophy, treading) lead to the formation of ornithogenic habitats with quantitatively and qualitatively diverse cyanobacterial and algal assemblages. Only 6 species common to both habitats were identified, but due to their different proportions the similarity ended there. Cyanobacterial and algal assemblages of both ornithogenic habitats also react rather differently to the intensity of the bird colonies’ influence. The assemblages located directly beneath piscivorous bird nests were characterized by a larger number of species, which decreased the farther from the colony it was. Cyanobacterial and algal assemblages located directly next to planktivorous bird nests were species poor, but species richness increased at locations farther from their direct influence. The obtained results confirmed that bird colonies characterized by different diet and behavior influenced the formation of two separate, quantitatively and qualitatively different cyanobacterial and algal assemblages. Species such as Eucapsis sp., Gleocapsopsis sp., Gloeothece sp., Woronichinia sp., Hematococcus sp. were characteristic for algae and cyanobacteria assemblages in the vicinity of piscivorous bird colonies, whereas Aphanocapsa sp., Gloeothece sp., Komvophoron minutum, Pseudanabaena sp., Gloeocystis sp. 2 occurred in the vicinity of planktivorous bird colonies.

The study focuses on how land use in the selected location affects the amount of phosphorus in the watershed. Defines the basic concepts of this and related issues. The monitored value is total phosphorus and description of the measuring apparatus. The resulting data are arranged in tables and graphs and results are compared with standards of Czech norms (CSN) and other similar studies.

The paper presents an analysis of the trophic status of two small retention reservoirs located in the Subcarpathian region: Blizne reservoir on the River Ladzierz and Cierpisz reservoir on the River Tuszymka. The capacity of the reservoirs is respectively 137,000 m3 and 22,000 m3 and they occupy an area of 11.46 and 2.3 hectares. The study was conducted from May to October in 2013 and in 2014. Samples of surface water were collected from two locations for each reservoir. Assessment of the trophic status of the reservoirs was based on the concentrations of phosphorus, nitrogen and chlorophyll a. Criteria available in the literature were used to assess the trophic status. The progress of eutrophication was also evaluated on the basis of the Trophic State Index (TSI). Analysis of the results showed that in the studied period the water of Blizne was on the border of eutrophic and hypertrophic. When considering the issue of the functioning of small water reservoirs, the attempt to assess changes in trophy of small retention reservoir located in Wasilkow, Podlasie, before and after remediation, was carried out. Water samples tests were carried out once a month from April 2007 to March 2008, from April 2009 to March 2010 (before remediation), and from April 2013 to March 2014 (after removal of silt). Prior to works related to the reservoir remediation, a gradual increase in the number of tested contaminants and disturbances in the seasonal occurrence of nitrogen and phosphorus compounds were observed. Advanced eutrophic processes in Wasilków reservoir occur probably due to the supply of large amounts of humic and biogenic substances from the catchment, because a significant percentage of its area is covered by forests and agricultural lands. The development of the trophic status of the reservoir is largely influenced by the amount of phosphorus and total nitrogen supplied to the reservoir; the least affected by chlorophyll “a”. Comparing the analyses performed in 2007/2008 and 2009/2010, a slight, but growing trend of average trophic levels of water in the basin Wasilków was found. Studies conducted in 2013/2014 revealed a significant decrease in the concentrations of all analyzed pollutants, and hence lower TSI values. It can be concluded that the reclamation associated with the removal of sediments brought the expected results.
