Search

Clinical diagnostic guidelines outline the key questions to answer to reach a diagnosis. Inspired by guidelines, we aim to develop a model that learns from electronic health records to determine the optimal sequence of actions for accurate diagnosis. Focusing on anemia and its sub-types, we employ deep reinforcement learning (DRL) algorithms and evaluate their performance on both a synthetic dataset, which is based on expert-defined diagnostic pathways, and a real-world dataset. We investigate the performance of these algorithms across various scenarios. Our experimental results demonstrate that DRL algorithms perform competitively with state-of-the-art methods while offering the significant advantage of progressively generating pathways to the suggested diagnosis, providing a transparent decision-making process that can guide and explain diagnostic reasoning., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2404.05913

Let's fix a complex abelian scheme $\mathcal A\to S$ of relative dimension $g$, without fixed part, and having maximal variation in moduli. We show that the relative monodromy group $M^{\textrm{rel}}_\sigma$ of a ramified section $\sigma\colon S\to\mathcal A$ is nontrivial. Moreover, under some hypotheses on the action of the monodromy group $\textrm{Mon}(\mathcal A)$ we show that $M^{\textrm{rel}}_\sigma\cong \mathbb Z^{2g}$. We discuss several examples and applications. For instance we provide a new proof of Manin's kernel theorem and of the algebraic independence of the coordinates of abelian logarithms with respect to the coordinates of periods., Comment: 25 pages. Heart failure (HF) contributes to circa 200,000 annual hospitalizations in France. With the increasing age of HF patients, elucidating the specific causes of inpatient mortality became a public health problematic. We introduce a novel methodological framework designed to identify prevalent health trajectories and investigate their impact on death. The initial step involves applying sequential pattern mining to characterize patients' trajectories, followed by an unsupervised clustering algorithm based on a new metric for measuring the distance between hospitalization diagnoses. Finally, a survival analysis is conducted to assess survival outcomes. The application of this framework to HF patients from a representative sample of the French population demonstrates its methodological significance in enhancing the analysis of healthcare trajectories.

We present some effective approaches in studying the relative monodromy group of elliptic logarithms with respect to periods of elliptic schemes. We provide explicit ways of constructing explicit loops which leave periods unchanged but along which logarithms have non-trivial variations. We also get some topological methods and effective results which allow to manage the ramification locus of sections. The paper was inspired by a theorem of Corvaja and Zannier which abstractly determine the relative monodromy group of non-torsion sections.

Consider two families of $g$-dimensional abelian varieties induced by two distinct rational maps on the same variety $\overline{\mathcal A}$ onto two bases $\overline S_1$ and $\overline S_2$ and having big common domain of definition. Two non-torsion sections of these families induce two (birational) fiberwise translations on $\overline{\mathcal A}$, respectively. We show that if $\dim \overline S_1+\dim \overline S_2\le 2g$, the points with finite orbit under the action of a certain subset of the group generated by both translations lie in a proper Zariski closed subset that can be described to a certain extent. We determine the relative monodromy group of abelian logarithms with respect to periods in the cases of fibered products of elliptic schemes. This gives rise to a result stronger than a theorem due to Y. Andr\'e and implies in particular the algebraic independence of the logarithm of any non-torsion section and the periods. We then conjecture an analogous result for the general case of an abelian scheme of arbitrary relative dimension. This generalizes a theorem of Corvaja and Zannier which determines the said group in the case of a single elliptic scheme.

We studied the effects of isoelectronic Ru substitution at the Fe site on the energy gaps of optimally F-doped SmFeAsO by means of point-contact Andreev reflection spectroscopy. The results show that the SmFe_{1-x}Ru_{x}AsO_{0.85}F_{0.15} system keeps a multigap character at least up to x=0.50, and that the gap amplitudes Delta_1 and Delta_2 scale almost linearly with the local critical temperature TcA. The gap ratios 2Delta_i/(kB Tc) remain approximately constant only as long as Tc > 30 K, but increase dramatically when Tc decreases further. This trend seems to be common to many Fe-based superconductors, irrespective of their family. Based on first-principle calculations of the bandstructure and of the density of states projected on the different bands, we show that this trend, as well as the Tc dependence of the gaps and the reduction of Tc upon Ru doping, can be explained within an effective three-band Eliashberg model as being due to a suppression of the superfluid density at finite temperature that, in turns, modifies the temperature dependence of the characteristic spin-fluctuation energy., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

In this paper we report a detailed $\mu^{+}$SR and {}$^{19}$F-NMR study of the La$_{0.7}$Y$_{0.3}$FeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ class of materials. Here, the diamagnetic La$_{1-y}$Y$_{y}$ substitution increases chemical pressure and, accordingly, sizeably enhances the optimal superconducting transition temperature. We investigate the magnetic-superconducting phase transition by keeping the Y content constant ($y = 0.3$) and by varying the F content in the range $0.025 \leq x \leq 0.15$. Our results show how magnetism and superconductivity coexist for $x = 0.065$. Such coexistence is due to segregation of the two phases in macroscopic regions, resembling what was observed in LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$ materials under applied hydrostatic pressure. This scenario is qualitatively different from the nanoscopic coexistence of the two order parameters observed when La is fully substituted by magnetic rare-earth ions like Sm or Ce., Comment: Proceedings of QCNP12 Conference

A novel method to prepare bulk Fe(Se0.5Te0.5) samples is presented, based on a melting process and a subsequent annealing treatment. With respect to the standard sintering technique, it produces much more homogeneous and denser samples, characterized by large and well interconnected grains. The resulting samples exhibit optimal critical temperature values, sharp resistive and magnetic transitions, large magnetic hysteresis loops and high upper critical fields are observed. Interestingly, the global critical current density is much enhanced as compared to the values reported in literature for bulk samples of the same 11 family, reaching about 103 A/cm2 at zero field at 4.2 K as assessed by magnetic, transport and magneto-optical techniques. Even more importantly, its field dependence turns out to be very weak, such that at \mu_{0}H = 7 T it is suppressed only by a factor \sim2., Comment: 21 pages, 15 figures

We investigate the effect of external pressure on magnetic order in undoped LnFeAsO (Ln = La, Ce, Pr, La) by using muon-spin relaxation measurements and ab-initio calculations. Both magnetic transition temperature $T_m$ and Fe magnetic moment decrease with external pressure. The effect is observed to be lanthanide dependent with the strongest response for Ln = La and the weakest for Ln = Sm. The trend is qualitatively in agreement with our DFT calculations. The same calculations allow us to assign a value of 0.68(2) $\mu_B$ to the Fe moment, obtained from an accurate determination of the muon sites. Our data further show that the magnetic lanthanide order transitions do not follow the simple trend of Fe, possibly as a consequence of the different $f$-electron overlap., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures

The effect of isoelectronic substitutions on the microscopic properties of LaFe1-xRuxAsO, for 0< x< 0.8, has been investigated by means of muSR and 139La NMR. It was found that Ru substitution causes a progressive reduction of the N\`eel temperature (T_N) and of the magnetic order parameter without leading to the onset of superconductivity. The temperature dependence of 139La nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T_1 can be suitably described within a two-band model. One band giving rise to the spin density wave ground-state, while the other one is characterized by weakly correlated electrons. Fe for Ru substitution yields to a progressive decrease of the density of states at the Fermi level close to the one derived from band structure calculations. The reduction of T_N with doping follows the predictions of the J_1-J_2 model on a square lattice, which appears to be an effective framework to describe the magnetic properties of the spin density wave ground-state., Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures

The evolution of the antiferromagnetic order parameter in CeFeAsO_{1-x}F_{x} as a function of the fluorine content x was investigated primarily via zero-field muon-spin spectroscopy. The long-range magnetic order observed in the undoped compound gradually turns into a short-range order at x=0.04, seemingly accompanied/induced by a drastic reduction of the magnetic moment of the iron ions. Superconductivity appears upon a further increase in doping (x>0.04) when, unlike in the cuprates, the Fe magnetic moments become even weaker. The resulting phase diagram evidences the presence of a crossover region, where the superconducting and the magnetic order parameters coexist on a nanoscopic range.

In this work we investigate the Ru substituted LaFeAsO compound, by studying the magnetotransport behaviour and its relationship with the band structure, in different regimes of temperature, magnetic field and Ru content. In particular we analyse the magnetoresistance of LaFe1-xRuxAsO (0 <= x <= 0.6) samples with the support of ab initio calculations and we find out that in the whole series: (i) the transport is dominated by electron bands only; (ii) the magnetoresistance exhibits distinctive features related to the presence of Dirac cones; indeed, ab initio calculations confirm the presence of anisotropic Dirac cones in the band structure; (iii) the low temperature mobility is exceptionally high and reaches 18.6 m2/(Vs) in the Ru-free sample at T=2K, in the extreme limit of a single Landau level occupied in the Dirac cones; (iv) the mobility drops abruptly above 10K-15K; (v) the disorder has a very weak effect on the band mobilities and on the transport properties; (vi) there exists a correlation between the temperature ranges of Dirac cones and SDW carrier condensation. These findings may be of crucial importance in the investigation of the pairing mechanism in the F-doped superconducting La(Fe,Ru)As(O,F) compounds related to this series of parent compounds., Comment: 18 pages, 12 figures, 1 table

Superconducting fluctuations (SF) in SmFeAsO$_{0.8}$F$_{0.2}$ (characterized by superconducting transition temperature $T_{c} \simeq 52.3$ K) are investigated by means of isothermal high-resolution dc magnetization measurements. The diamagnetic response to magnetic fields up to 1 T above $T_{c}$ is similar to what previously reported for underdoped cuprate superconductors and it can be justified in terms of metastable superconducting islands at non-zero order parameter lacking of long-range coherence because of strong phase fluctuations. In the high-field regime ($H \gtrsim 1.5$ T) scaling arguments predicted on the basis of the Ginzburg-Landau theory of conventional SF are found to be applicable, at variance with what observed in the low-field regime. This fact enlightens that two different phenomena are simultaneously present in the fluctuating diamagnetism, namely the phase SF of novel character and the conventional SF. High magnetic fields (1.5 T $\lesssim H \ll H_{c2}$) are found to suppress the former while leaving unaltered the latter one., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Ac susceptibility and static magnetization measurements were performed in the optimally doped SmFeAsO$_{0.8}$F$_{0.2}$ superconductor. The field - temperature phase diagram of the superconducting state was drawn and, in particular, the features of the flux line lattice derived. The dependence of the intra-grain depinning energy on the magnetic field intensity was derived in the thermally-activated flux creep framework, enlightening a typical 1/H dependence in the high-field regime. The intra-grain critical current density was extrapolated in the zero temperature and zero magnetic field limit, showing a remarkably high value $J_{c0}(0) \sim 2 \cdot 10^{7}$ A/cm$^{2}$, which demonstrates that this material is rather interesting for the potential future technological applications., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

We study the effect of synthesis temperature on the phase formation in nano(n)-SiC added bulk MgB2 superconductor. In particular we study: lattice parameters, amount of carbon (C) substitution, microstructure, critical temperature (Tc), irreversibility field (Hirr), critical current density (Jc), upper critical field (Hc2) and flux pinning. Samples of MgB2+(n-SiC)x with x=0.0, 0.05 & 0.10 were prepared at four different synthesis temperatures i.e. 850, 800, 750, and 700oC with the same heating rate as 10oC/min. We found 750oC as the optimal synthesis temperature for n-SiC doping in bulk MgB2 in order to get the best superconducting performance in terms of Jc, Hc2 and Hirr. Carbon (C) substitution enhances the Hc2 while the low temperature synthesis is responsible for the improvement in Jc due to the smaller grain size, defects and nano-inclusion induced by C incorporation into MgB2 matrix, which is corroborated by elaborative HRTEM (high-resolution transmission electron microscopy) results. We prepared polycrystalline SmFeAsO1-xFx (Sm1111) bulk samples by sintering and hot isostatic pressing (HIP) in order to study the effects of phase purity and relative density on the intergranular current density. Sintered and HIPped Sm1111 samples are denser with fewer impurity phases, such as SmOF and the grain boundary wetting phase, FeAs. We found quite complex magnetization behavior due to variations of both the inter and intragranular current densities. Removing porosity and reducing second phase content enhanced the intergranular current density, but HIPping reduced Tc and the intragranular current density, due to loss of fluorine and reduction of Tc. We believe that the HIPped samples are amongst the purest polycrystalline 1111 samples yet made. However, their intergranular current densities are still small, providing further evidence that polycrystalline pnictides, like polycrystalline cuprates, are intrinsically granular., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures

We synthesized bulk polycrystalline samples of RECoAsO (RE=La, Nd and Sm) by solid state reaction route in an evacuated sealed quartz tube. All these compounds are crystallized in a tetragonal structure with space group P4/nmm. The Co, in these compounds is in itinerant ferromagnetic state with its paramagnetic moment above 1.5 microB and the same orders ferromagnetically (FM) with small saturation moment of around 0.20 microB below say 80K. This bulk intrinsic magnetism of Co changes dramatically when nonmagnetic La is changed by magnetic Sm and Nd. Although the itinerant ferromagnetism occurs below 80-100K with small saturation moment, typical anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) transitions (TN1, TN2) are observed at 57K and 45K for Sm and at 69K and 14K for Nd. The transition of Co spins from FM to AFM, for magnetic Sm and Nd in RECoAsO is both field and temperature dependent. For applied fields below 100Oe, both TN1 and TN2 are seen, with intermediate fields below 1-2kOe only TN1 and above say 5kOe the AFM transition is not observed. This is evidenced in isothermal magnetization (MH) plots as well. It is clear that Sm/Nd magnetic moments interact with the ordered Co spins in adjacent layer and thus transforms the FM ordering to AFM. We report on the coexistence of magnetic and superconducting states in CeFeAsO1-xFx for x=0.06(2), characterized by transition temperatures T_m=30 K and T_c=18 K, respectively. Zero and transverse field muon-spin relaxation measurements show that below 10 K the two phases coexist within a nanoscopic scale over a large volume fraction. This result clarifies the nature of the magnetic-to-superconducting transition in the CeFeAsO1-xFx phase diagram, by ruling out the presence of a quantum critical point which was suggested by earlier studies., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figs, accepted for publication as PRB Rapid comm

In this work we present a systematic experimental and theoretical study of the structural, transport and superconducting properties of Sm(Fe1-xRux)As(O0.85F0.15) polycrystalline samples as a function of Ru content (x) ranging from 0 to 1. The choice of Ru as isoelectronic substitution at Fe site of F-doped compounds allows to better clarify the role of structural disorder in modifying the normal and superconducting properties of these newly discovered multiband superconductors. Two different regions are identified: the Fe-rich phase (x<0.5) where superconducting and normal state properties are strongly affected by disorder induced by Ru substitution; the Ru-rich phase (x>0.5) where the system is metallic and strongly compensated and the presence of Ru frustrates the magnetic moment on Fe ions. $^{19}$F NMR measurements in SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$, for $0.15\leq x\leq 0.2$, are presented. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ increases upon cooling with a trend analogous to the one already observed in CeCu$_{5.2}$Au$_{0.8}$, a quasi two-dimensional heavy-fermion intermetallic compound with an antiferromagnetic ground-state. In particular, the behaviour of the relaxation rate either in SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ or in CeCu$_{5.2}$Au$_{0.8}$ can be described in the framework of the self-consistent renormalization theory for weakly itinerant electron systems. Remarkably, no effect of the superconducting transition on $^{19}$F $1/T_1$ is detected, a phenomenon which can hardly be explained within a single band model., Comment: 4 figures

The nuclear and magnetic structure of Fe1+y(Te1-x,Sex) (0 < x < 0.20) compounds was analyzed between 2 K and 300 K by means of Rietveld refinement of neutron powder diffraction data. Samples with x < 0.075 undergo a tetragonal to monoclinic phase transition at low temperature, whose critical temperature decreases with increasing Se content; this structural transition is strictly coupled to a long range antiferromagnetic ordering at the Fe site. Both the transition to a monoclinic phase and the long range antiferromagnetism are suppressed for 0.10 < x < 0.20. The onset of the structural and of the magnetic transition remains coincident with the increase of Se substitution. The low temperature monoclinic crystal structure has been revised. Superconductivity arises for x > 0.05, therefore a significant region where superconductivity and long range antiferromagnetism coexist is present in the pseudo-binary FeTe - FeSe phase diagram., Comment: 33 pages, 4 tables, 13 figures

High purity epitaxial FeSe0.5Te0.5 thin films with different thickness were grown by Pulsed Laser Ablation on different substrates. By varying the film thickness, Tc up to 21K were observed, significantly larger than the bulk value. Structural analyses indicated that the a axis changes significantly with the film thickness and is linearly related to the Tc. The latter result indicates the important role of the compressive strain in enhancing Tc. Tc is also related to both the Fe-(Se,Te) bond length and angle, suggesting the possibility of further enhancement.

We present transport and superconducting properties - namely resistivity, magnetoresistivity, Hall effect, Seebeck effect, thermal conductivity, upper critical field - of two different families of Fe-based superconductors, which can be viewed in many respects as end members: SmFeAs(O1-xFx) with the largest Tc and the largest anisotropy and Fe1+y(Te1-x,Sex), with the largest Hc2, the lowest Tc and the lowest anisotropy. In the case of the SmFeAs(O1-xFx) series, we find that a single band description allows to extract an approximated estimation of band parameters such as carrier density and mobility from experimental data, although the behaviour of Seebeck effect as a function of doping demonstrates that a multiband description would be more appropriate. On the contrary, experimental data of the Fe1+y(Te1-x,Sex) series exhibit a strongly compensated behaviour, which can be described only within a multiband model. In the Fe1+y(Te1-x,Sex) series, the role of the excess Fe, tuned by Se stoichiometry, is found to be twofold: it dopes electrons in the system and it introduces localized magnetic moments, responsible for Kondo like scattering and likely pair-breaking of Cooper pairs. Hence, excess Fe plays a crucial role also in determining superconducting properties such as the Tc and the upper critical field Bc2. The huge Bc2 values of the Fe1+y(Te1-x,Sex) samples are described by a dirty limit law, opposed to the clean limit behaviour of the SmFeAs(O1-xFx) samples. Hence, magnetic scattering by excess Fe seems to drive the system in the dirty regime, but its detrimental pairbreaking role seems not to be as severe as predicted by theory. This issue has yet to be clarified, addressing the more fundamental issue of the interplay between magnetism and superconductivity.
