We propose a model where imperfect matching between firms and workers on local labor markets leads to incentives for spatial agglomeration. We show that the occurrence of spatial agglomeration depends on initial size differences in terms of both number of workers and firms. Allowing for dynamics of workers' and firms' location choices, we show that the spatial outcome depends crucially on different dimensions of agents' mobility. The effect of a higher level of human capital on regional disparities depends on whether it makes workers more mobile or more specialized on the labor market. Firms are induced to locate in close proximity to endogenize technologically spillovers that are spatially bound. Analysis has important implications for regional policy, which points out that spatial proximity and tough competition prevents free-riding for firm in case of knowledge sharing.

International audience; Ce numéro spécial propose un ensemble de contributions théoriques et empiriques sur les politiques de concurrence et les régulations de marchés. Quels bilans peut-on dresser de l'action des autorités de la concurrence ? Quels sont les nouveaux enjeux concurrentiels et réglementaires ? Quels renouvellements théoriques et méthodologiques viennent modifier l’appréhension de ces questions ? En quoi contribuent-ils à améliorer l’efficacité des politiques de concurrence ?La première partie s’intéresse aux volets classiques de la politique de la concurrence (ententes, fusions) et aux apports de la théorie des jeux, de l’économie comportementale et de la théorie des marchés bifaces. La seconde partie se penche sur certains secteurs (marchés des télécommunications, marchés de haute technologie, marchés de l’énergie, secteur pharmaceutique, professions d’avocat) et illustre les difficultés de concilier la politique de la concurrence avec d’autres politiques publiques (politique industrielle, politique d’innovation, propriété intellectuelle, politique environnementale, etc.).

Abstract

The existing literature in expert-customer relationship concludes that when: i) consumers are homogenous, ii) consumers are committed with an an expert once this one made a recommendation, and iii) the type of treatment provided is verifiable, an expert finds optimal to serve efficiently his customers. This work shows that the previous result may not occur when consumers are not risk-neutral. Our result, that holds in a monopoly setting and under Bertrand competition, suggests that risk averse consumers have more likely to be mistreated by experts.

Abstract

International audience; The authors develop a theoretical model where two competing firms need access to basic knowledge that only one firm owns. They determine the impact of an imperfect property right on the incentive to transfer that knowledge to the competitor. They compare these transfer strategies. (i) Patenting may lead to litigation costs that depend on the competition toughness. (ii) Keeping the knowledge secret involves no licence revenue but ensures a monopoly profit. (iii) The firm can also coooperate with the competitor and thereby avoids litigation. They show that whenever competition between both firms is low, making patentable basic knowledge promotes knowledge transfer through research cooperation.
