The current climate situation potentiates the need for distinctive crops which have to be high yielding and resilient to abiotic and biotic stresses, particularly to drought stress. Responses to stresses are regulated and coordinated by phytohormones, whose transport and perception are commonly centered around plasma membrane (PM)-localized proteins. Localization and abundance of these are organized by endosomal trafficking, whereby the post-translational modification of PM proteins with the small protein ubiquitin is key in signaling their endocytosis and degradation. This review focuses on the endosomal degradation pathway in plants with a special focus on a protein family termed TARGET OF MYB1 (TOM1)-LIKE (TOLs), responsible for initiating sorting of ubiquitinated proteins destined for degradation. TOLs, albeit having apparent redundancies, play a role in very specific pathways where they may be relevant for fine-tuning of plant hormone signaling by means of tightly controlled protein turnover. Understanding the function of TOLs could give key insights into the mechanisms by which plants define the trade-off between stress tolerance and plant development when faced with challenging environments. Findings obtained in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana provide a solid foundation for translational research aimed at breeding more tolerant crops.

Durch die mit dem Klimawandel einhergehende höhere Durchschnittstemperatur und häufigere Frühjahrs- und Sommertrockenheit wird das Wasser zu einem zunehmend limitierenden Faktor für die landwirtschaftliche Pflanzenproduktion. Am Institut für Pflanzenbau und Bodenkunde des Julius Kühn-Instituts (JKI) wurden in den letzten Jahren mehrere Experimente mit dem Produktionsfaktor Wasser durchgeführt. Die wichtigsten Ergebnisse einiger ausgewählter Experimente werden in dieser Veröffentlichung kurz beschrieben: (I) Wasserbedarf von Energiemais, (II) Einfluss der Wasserversorgung auf die interspezifische Konkurrenz beim Mischanbau, (III) Vergleich der Trockentoleranz von Mais und Sorghumhirsen, (IV) Extremszenario zu Trockenstress bei Wintergetreide, (V) Temperatur des Pflanzenbestandes als Bioindikator für den Wasserstatus und (VI) Wasseraufnahme, Wassernutzungseffizienz und Biomasseertrag von Durchwachsener Silphie.

Die Durchwachsene Silphie (Silphium perfoliatum L.) ist eine interessante Energiepflanze, die als Substrat in Biogasanlagen genutzt werden kann. Vorliegende Untersuchungen zum Anbau dieser mehrjährigen Kultur sollten Erkenntnisse zur Ertragsstabilität und möglichen Nutzungsdauer der Durchwachsenen Silphie unter bayerischen Bedingungen bereitstellen. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die Durchwachsene Silphie unter guten Anbaubedingungen, wie z.B. im „Straubinger Gäu“, mehrjährig hohe Erträge von 160 bis 220 dt Trockenmasse/ha liefern kann. Die Ertragsleistung des Silomaises lag jedoch in drei von vier Jahren noch höher. Ein Einfluss der verschiedenen Herkünfte des Pflanzenmaterials auf den Ertrag war nicht erkennbar. Ein Standortvergleich ergab, dass die Durchwachsene Silphie in allen bayerischen Gebieten in denen Ackerbau betrieben wird, angebaut werden kann. Hohe Erträge sind allerdings nur auf nährstoffreichen Böden und mit guter Wasserversorgung möglich.

Because of the higher average temperature and more frequent spring and summer drought associated with climate change, water becomes an increasingly limiting factor for agricultural crop production. At the Institute for Crop and Soil Science of the Julius Kühn-Institut (JKI), several experiments with the production factor water have been carried out during recent years. The most important results of some selected experiments are briefly described in this publication: (I) water requirement of energy maize, (II) influence of water supply on interspecific competition in mixed cropping, (III) comparison of drought tolerance of maize and sorghum, (IV) extreme scenario for drought stress in winter cereals, (V) canopy temperature as a biological indicator for the crop water status and (VI) water uptake, water use efficiency and biomass yield of cup plant. Cup plant (Silphium perfoliatum L.) is an interesting energy crop that can be used as substrate in biogas plants. The present study on the cultivation of this crop shall provide knowledge on yield stability and shall demonstrate how many years cup plant can be grown under Bavarian conditions. The results show that under favorable conditions, as for example in the "Straubinger Gäu" region, cup plant can produce high yields of 160 to 220 dt dry matter/ha for several years. However, the total biomass yield of maize was higher in three of four years. The place of origin of cup plant (cultivar) had no effect on yield. Comparing the yield of different experimental sites in Bavaria proved that cup plant can be grown in any Bavarian region where crop cultivation is possible. Nevertheless, high yields will be harvested only on nutrient rich soils with sufficient water supply. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
