A new record of Lobotes surinamensis (Bloch, 1790) around Saros Bay, North Aegean Sea is presented, based on a single hermaphrodite specimen with detailed biological information. On 12 June 2018, the specimen was captured by fishermen with gillnets at a depth of 25 m. Sex, age, and stomach content were determined. This new record proves the Northernmost distribution of the species in the Turkish part of the Aegean Sea., Bu çalışmada, Lobotes surinamensis (Bloch, 1790)’in Saroz Körfezi’ndeki yeni kaydı tek dişi birey ile detaylı biyolojik bilgileriyle birlikte verilmiştir. Birey balıkçıların uzatma ağlarından 25 m derinlikte 12 Haziran 2018 tarihinde yakalanmıştır. Cinsiyet, yaş ve mide içeriği belirlenmiştir. Bu yeni kayıt türün Kuzey Ege’nin Türk sularındaki en kuzey dağılımını göstermektedir.

In the Mediterranean Sea, Lobotes surinamensis (Bloch, 1790) is considered as a rare species, albeit an increasing number of individual-based sightings published in the literature. In this study, we present 32 additional records of this thermophilic species from the Greek and Cypriot waters; reinforcing the evidence that the species is becoming more common to the region. All of the records were collected as part of the citizen science project “Is it Alien to you? Share it!!!” by a participatory process involving fishers and taxonomic experts. This work highlights the important role of citizen science as a tool for public engagement and for monitoring species distribution in a changing environment, like the Mediterranean basin.

The tripletail Lobotes surinamensis inhabits tropical and subtropical oceans, including the South Atlantic, where information about its reproductive biology is scarce. We combined physiological and morphological tools to study the reproductive cycle of L. surinamensis in the western South Atlantic. Adult females and males were sampled in Paraty Bay (Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil) for 2 years, and the animals were grouped into three seasons: spring, summer, and autumn/winter. Gonadal morphology, plasma levels of gonadal steroids, 17β-estradiol (E2), 11-ketotestosterone (11-KT), and 17α-hydroxyprogesterone (17α-OHP) were quantified in females, and testosterone (T) and 11-KT were quantified in males. The gene expression of the β subunit of pituitary gonadotropins, luteinizing hormone (LH), and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) were evaluated in all seasons. The histological analysis of the gonads showed that L. surinamensis is a multiple spawner with an asynchronous oocyte development. The gene expression of fshβ did not change throughout the reproductive cycle in males and females, while the gene expression of lhβ in males was higher in the summer compared to the autumn/winter periods. Plasma E2 was higher in females and 11-KT in males during spring. Gonadal development, plasma level of E2 (females), and 11-KT (males) are indicators that L. surinamensis reproduce during the spring and summer in Paraty Bay, while the gene expression levels of gonadotropins in females and fshβ in males were not useful physiological tools to establish the reproductive season. The results suggest an active expression throughout the year, a profile expected in multiple spawning species, as proposed here for the L. surinamensis.

Reproductive biology information is an important tool for fishery management actions such as the identification of spawning areas and the development of protective size limits, bag limits, and seasons. Such information for the management of Atlantic Tripletail Lobotes surinamensis is currently limited, particularly in the western Atlantic Ocean, as information regarding the reproductive biology of this species is sparse in the published literature. To this end, we determined the reproductive status of tripletail and compared the results of a nonlethal sampling method, plasma vitellogenin (VTG) analysis, with those of two traditional (lethal) methods, gonadosomatic index (GSI) and gonad histology. A total of 223 (122 male and 101 female) tripletail were sampled over 2 years near Jekyll Island, Georgia. Two lepadid barnacles Lepas hilli and Conchoderma virgatum used tripletail Lobotes surinamensis as an attachment surface. This is the first report of such epibotic association especially of L. hilli on fish in general.

WOS: 000392113000009, 28062993, The siphonostomatoid parasitic copepod Caligus macrurus Heller, 1865 is redescribed based on new material collected from the gill filaments and pharynx of tripletail Lobotes surinamensis Bloch (Lobotidae) caught in Iskenderun Bay, Turkey. Key diagnostic characters and newly observed taxonomic features are reported, supported by light and scanning electron microscopy observations. This is the first report of C. macrurus from Mediterranean waters. Caligus macrurus is also recognised as conspecific with the better known Caligus bennetti Causey, 1953, found on the same host, which becomes a junior subjective synonym of C. macrurus. Caligus O.F. Muller, 1785 and Sciaenophilus van Beneden, 1852 have both been treated as valid genera within the family Caligidae although numerous doubts have been expressed over the validity of the latter. Atlantic Tripletails Lobotes surinamensis support a popular recreational fishery along the coast of Georgia; however, Atlantic Tripletail residency and movements within Georgia estuaries have not been studied. Our objective was to describe estuarine movements and residency of Atlantic Tripletails in the Ossabaw Sound Estuary, Georgia. During summer in 2010 and 2011, large juvenile and adult Atlantic Tripletails (n = 32; 42.1–71.0 cm TL) were captured with traditional angling methods and received surgically implanted ultrasonic transmitters. Tagged individuals were detected within the estuary via a stationary array of acoustic receivers that monitored the estuary continuously from June 2010 through May 2012. Manual tracking was conducted with a portable hydrophone and homing. Organophosphorus compounds (OPCs) and stable isotope ratios (δ(13)C and δ(15)N) were determined in 58 fishes belonging to 20 species collected from Manila Bay, the Philippines. OPCs were detected in most of the samples and found up to μg/g lw (lipid weight) level, suggesting their ubiquitous presence in the coastal marine environment of the Philippines. Higher levels (>1000 ng/g lw) of total OPCs were determined in yellowstriped goatfish, silver sillago, tripletail wrasse and bumpnose trevally indicates either their active uptake from ambient water or lower metabolic capacity of these species. Levels of triphenyl phosphate (TPhP) in demersal species showed a positive correlation with δ(15)N, indicating that TPhP was adsorbed onto the particle, settled down to the bottom sediment and accumulated through the benthic food web rather than the pelagic. Estimated dietary intake of OPCs in Manila Bay fishes were four to five orders of magnitude lower than the proposed reference dose (RfD).

Kakap Lobo fish (Lobotes surinamensis) still belong to wildlife fish with economical price. Kakap Lobo known as tripletail fish, black barramundi and leaf fish. So far there is no report in Indonesia about successful of Kakap Lobo farm or cultured. Cause of that, BPBL Batam try to domesticate Lobo as the alternative fish that potential to culture and give the more economical price. The objective of this activity is to domesticate the captured Lobo then culture sea net cage. Domesticated done seven months in Dec 2016 till Juli 2017 in sea floating net cage. Lobo seeds found on the surface around net-cage put into the pompano cultured net, the size almost same, and cultured together. Lobo seeds initial size 1,0 – 6,9 gram (average 3,5 gram) in bodyweight amount 21 fishes fed same as pompano feed pellets. The cultured result as long as seven months gain the final body weight of Lobo 1.091,0 – 1.381,5 (average 1,175,0 gram), average daily growth 5,58 gram/day and survival rate 100%. On 18th July 2016 one specimen of tripletail Lobotes surinamensis (Bloch, 1790) (Lobotidae) was caught by fi shermen in the Lagoon of Marano and Grado (Gulf of Trieste). This is the fi rst record in the northernmost area of the Adriatic Sea and Mediterranean, too.

Lobotes surinamensis is a widely distributed marine perciform and is the sole member of the family Lobotidae, which has unclear phylogenetic affinities. In this paper we describe and illustrate a mode of tooth replacement in Lobotes that we name “grouped” tooth replacement. Lateral oral teeth are replaced intraosseously, i.e., developing replacement teeth can clearly be seen beneath them within both the dentary and premaxillary bones. In contrast to the more typically seen pattern of alternate replacement, the replacement teeth of Lobotes develop as a group within the bone, lying directly beneath the group of teeth that they will replace. Within each tooth replacement group, the teeth show an anteroposterior gradient in age. Within the category of fully functional teeth there is a clear anterior to posterior gradient of eruption within a tooth group. The gel forming ability and other characteristics of the mince of 11 underutilized marine fish were studied. They were Bombay duck, silverbelly, sea catfish, silver jewfish, jewelled shad, queenfish, Spanish mackerel, hardtail, Indian tuna, tripletail and false conger eel. Mince was prepared from fillet and a portion of the mince was washed two times with cold water (5°C) containing 0.1% NaCl. Both washed and unwashed mince were ground with 3% NaCl. Ground paste was then stuffed into plastic tube and heated for one- and two-step heating. In the one-step heating, the tubes were subjected to 25°, 30°, 35°, 40°, 50°, 60°, 70° and 80°C for 60, 120 and 180 min. In the two-step heating, the tubes were pre-heated at 25°, 30°, 35°, 40°, 50°, 60°, 70° and 80°C for 60, 120 and 180 min. Since the last quarter of the twentieth century, the Omani territorial waters of the Arabian Gulf, Sea of Oman and the Arabian Sea have witnessed several ichthyologic surveys (Stromme, 1986; Saetersdal et al., 1999; McKoy et al., 2009), with new fish records from both the Sea of Oman and the Arabian Sea coasts of Oman determined since 2009. These records are based mainly on the results of the ‘RV Al-Mustaqila’ trawler survey and other ichthyologic studies performed in Omani waters (Fricke et al., 2014; Jawad et al., 2014). Lobotes surinamensis (Bloch, 1790) is distributed in tropical and subtropical waters of all oceans (Tortonese, 1990) and reaches a maximum of 110 cm total length (TL). Except for a record from Djibouti (Bouhlel, 1988), this species is absent from the Red Sea, nor is it recorded from the coasts of the south Arabian Peninsula (Manilo and Bogorodsky, 2003). In the northern Indian Ocean region, L. surinamensis has been reported from the Somali coast (Sommer et al., 1996), Karachi (Bianchi, 1985), and the Iranian coasts of the Sea of Oman (Assadi and Dehghani, 1997; IFC & IFRO, 2000). The tripletail Lobotes surinamensis reported in the present study has a wide distribution range (Froese and Pauly, 2013); however, its record from the area under study is not verified scientifically. Thus the present study is important in that it confirms the presence of L. surinamensis in the Sea of Oman on the one coast and in the northern Indian Ocean region on the other. This is of importance as no species of the family Lobotidae has heretofore been noted in the area. The record also adds a new location for this species to those areas already known.

Additional records of four fish species are reported from the Adriatic Sea are reported: Atlantic tripletail, Lobotes surinamensis (Bloch, 1790) (Perciformes: Lobotidae) ; blue runner, Caranx crysos (Mitchill, 1815) (Perciformes: Carangidae) ; fangtooth moray, Enchelycore anatina (Lowe, 1838) (Anguilliformes: Muraenidae) ; and silver- cheeked toadfish, Lagocephalus sceleratus (Gmelin, 1789) (Tetraodontiformes: Tetraodontidae). More evidence is needed to indicate establishment of populations of these species in the Adriatic Sea. Lessepsian migrant Lagocephalus sceleratus is the third Lessepsian fish species from the Adriatic Sea with more than one record.

The Tripletail, Lobotes surinamensis, is a pelagic fish found in tropical and sub-tropical waters of all oceans. Tripletails are often associated with floating debris and make frequent incursions in bays and estuaries where they are targeted by recreational fishermen. In Mississippi waters the species is typically present during the late spring and summer season that also correspond to the period of sexual maturation and spawning (Brown-Peterson and Franks 2001). Tripletail is appreciated as a gamefish but is also prized for its flesh of superior quality. The fast growth rate of juveniles in captivity documented by Franks et al. (2001) and the excellent quality of Tripletail flesh both contribute to the potential of this species for marine aquaculture. In addition, the production of cultured juveniles would be precious to develop a better understanding of the biology, early life history and habitat use of Tripletail larvae and juveniles, a topic largely undocumented to date, through experimental releases and controlled studies. The culture of tripletail thus supports the Tidelands Trust Fund Program through improved conservation of natural resources, potential enhancement of fisheries productivity and potential development of a new economic activity on the Gulf coast producing tripletail via aquaculture. The Objective of this project was to initiate development of methods and techniques needed to spawn captive held tripletail broodfish and raise their offspring to evaluate their growth and development in captivity. In this report we will present the results of studies aiming to develop methods and protocols for captive spawning of tripletail and the first data obtained on the early development of tripletail larvae. A major issue that was encountered with tripletail broodstock development during the project lied in the difficulties associated with identifying the sex of adults caught in the wild and candidates for being incorporated in mating sets for spawning. This issue was addressed during the course of the project by examining the potential of a non-lethal method of hormonal sexing. The results of these preliminary investigations are presented in the third part of this report. All protocols used in the project were determined with the guidance of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) of the University of Southern Mississippi (USM IACUC protocol number 10100108).

Concentrations of lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and copper (Cu) were determined in muscle and liver tissue in the three commercially fish species, the Indian mackerel (Rastrellinger kanagurta), the tuna (Euthynnus affinis), and the tripletail (Lobotes surinamensis) collected from Aceh (Indonesia) and Penang (Malaysia). In this study, metal concentrations were found highest in the liver tissue compared to the muscle for all fish species (P0.05). Concentrations ofmetals in the liver were in the range of 0.05 to 0.4 0g/g dry wt for Pb, from 0.13 to 0.67 0g/g dry wt. for Cd, and 1.17 to 3.54 0g/g dry wt. for Cu. While in the muscle, Pb content were in the range of 0.02 to 0.14 0g/g dry wt.; Cd at below 0.12 0g/g dry wt.; and Cu at below 0.54 0g/g dry wt. On the average, among locations, Pb, Cd, and Cu contamination were found significantly higher (P0.05) in samples collected from Aceh (Indonesia). However, levels of metals in the fish studied were not exceeded the guideline values for food as recommended by Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food, UK and the Ministry of Health Malaysia.

The tripletail or blackfish ( Lobotes surinamensis , Lobotidae) is recorded for the first time from an oceanic island in the South Atlantic, based on two individuals sighted and photographed near a buoy at Fernando de Noronha Island, off north-eastern Brazil.

Kudoa hypoepicardialis n. sp. infects the space between the epicardium and the compact myocardium and, in intense infections, the pericardial chamber of man-of-war fish (Nomeus gronovii) (Nomeidae) (the type host), blue runner (Caranx crysos) (Carangidae), Warsaw grouper (Epinephelus nigritus) (Serranidae), Atlantic tripletail (Lobotes surinamensis) (Lobotidae), northern red snapper (Lutjanus campechanus) (Lutjanidae), black drum (Pogonias cromis) (Sciaenidae), and bluefish (Pomatomus saltatrix) (Pomatomidae) in the northern Gulf of Mexico. This is the first report of a Kudoa sp. from the heart of a fish in the Gulf of Mexico, and of these hosts, only the bluefish was previously identified as a host for a species of Kudoa. Spores of the new species varied slightly in size among these hosts but were regarded as conspecific based on their nearly identical (99.9%) small-subunit (SSU) ribosomal DNA (rDNA) sequence. The new species differs both from the 4 nominal species of Kudoa reported from fishes in the Gulf of Mexico and from K. pericardialis, an allopatric species that infects the pericardial cavity, by the combination of having a large spore, a small polar capsule, and a polar filament with a single coil. The new species is morphologically and genetically most similar to K. shiomitsui, an allopatric species that infects the heart and pericardial cavity, but is distinguished from it based on a 4.2% difference in the SSU rDNA sequence. Heart lesions primarily were restricted to the vicinity of plasmodia and included a layer of fibrinous inflammation characterized by lymphocytes, macrophages, and granulomas as well as epithelioid encapsulations around plasmodia. Heavily infected hosts had melanin-like deposits and adipose cells beneath the epicardium. and the epicardium was discontinuous and apparently breached by plasmodia in some regions. Cardiac muscle, gill, liver, spleen, intestine, and kidney were normal.

On 21 June 2010, a specimen of the tripletail, Lobotes surinamensis, was caught by purse seine near Bisevo Island. This is the first record of this species in the Adriatic Sea.

Early-juvenile tripletail Lobotes surinamensis (n = 27; range 45-115 mm TL, 0 = 73.0 mm; range 3.2-34.7 g TW, 0 = 12.9 g) captured in pelagic Sargassum algae off coastal Mississippi in mid-July 1999 were reared in a recirculating seawater system for 210 days. Fish were maintained on a natural light-dark cycle and fed to satiation 3 times per day. Water temperature ranged from 25.2° to 29.0° C and salinity was 28.0‰. All fish were measured for length and weight on days 1, 60, 135 and 210 of the study. Between these dates, mean daily TL growth rates were 2.2 mm/day, 1.2 mm/day, and 1.0 mm/day, respectively, where as 0 daily TW growth rates were 2.9 g/day, 4.3 g/day, and 7.1 g/day. Over the entire study, 0 TL and TW growth rates were 1.4 mm/day and 4.9 g/day, respectively. There was a significant correlation between length and weight vs. date of measurement. At the end of the study, specimens ranged from 272-431 mm TL (0 = 359 mm) and from 443.9-2,380.0 g TW (0 = 1,012.5 g).
