Abstract

The significant issue of managing in-vitro culture browning in plant tissue culture procedures is explored in depth in this review. The complex issue of browning, which includes oxidative, enzymatic, and non-enzymatic browning, poses obstacles to the effectiveness of in vitro culture and has an impact on the quality of secondary metabolites as well as plant viability. Researchers and practitioners encounter this issue in their pursuit of successful plant propagation and valuable secondary metabolite production. The review explores a range of control measures, including antioxidants like ascorbic acid, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and potassium citrate, alterations to the culture medium, and the selection of suitable culture vessels. These techniques provide a comprehensive method for controlling browning and getting good results in plant tissue culture. The knowledge gathered from this research advances the industry and promotes sustainability since plant tissue culture is still essential for creating disease-free plants, quickly proliferating uncommon genotypes, and synthesizing useful plant-derived compounds. Whether enhancing crop traits or cultivating plants with economically significant products, effective control of culture browning remains a key factor in achieving these goals. In conclusion, this review advances our understanding of the multifaceted challenge of culture browning in plant tissue culture and provides actionable solutions to address this issue. Abstract

Medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) are plants that have various uses for human health, nutrition, and well-being. They are sources of herbal medicines, dietary supplements, cosmetics, fragrances, spices, and other products. However, the production and utilization of MAPs also pose challenges and opportunities for environmental sustainability and economic viability. This work offers a wide-ranging review of the sustainable practices and circular economy approaches for the valorization of MAPs. The review discusses the importance and value of MAPs, as well as the principles and benefits of the circular economy, a sustainable model that aims to minimize waste and make the most of resources. The review identifies and analyzes various circular economy approaches for valorizing MAPs, like resource optimization through sustainable cultivation, waste minimization in harvesting and processing, closed-loop supply chains, product diversification and upcycling, circular design thinking for MAP-based products, recycling and reusing MAP-based waste, eco-certification and consumer awareness, and collaborative networks and knowledge sharing. 24. Observations of aerosol–vapor pressure deficit–evaporative fraction coupling over India

Abstract

Northern India is a densely populated subtropical region with heavy aerosol loading (mean aerosol optical depth or AOD is ∼0.7), frequent heat waves, and strong atmosphere–biosphere coupling, making it ideal for studying the impacts of aerosols and the temperature variation in latent heat flux (LH) and evaporative fraction (EF). Here, using in situ observations during the onset of the summer monsoon over a semi-natural grassland site in this region, we confirm that strong co-variability exists among aerosols, LH, air temperature (Tair), and the vapor pressure deficit (VPD). Since the surface evapotranspiration is strongly controlled by both physical (available energy and moisture demand) and physiological (canopy and aerodynamic resistance) factors, we separately analyze our data for different combinations of aerosols and Tair/VPD changes. We find that aerosol loading and warmer conditions both reduce sensible heat (SH). Furthermore, we find that an increase in atmospheric VPD tends to decrease the gross primary production (GPP) and, thus, LH, most likely as a response to stomatal closure of the dominant grasses at this location. In contrast, under heavy aerosol loading, LH is enhanced partly due to the physiological control exerted by the diffuse radiation fertilization effect (thus increasing EF). Moreover, LH and EF increases with aerosol loading even under heat wave conditions, indicating a decoupling of the plant's response to the VPD enhancement (stomatal closure) in the presence of high aerosol conditions. Our results encourage detailed in situ experiments and mechanistic modeling of AOD–VPD–EF coupling for a better understanding of Indian monsoon dynamics and crop vulnerability in a heat stressed and heavily polluted future India.

43. Interactive effect of water and nutrient on survival and growth of tree seedlings of four dry tropical tree species under grass competition.

Abstract

The increasingly degrading dry tropical forests due to anthropogenic perturbations may further show significant species and individual loss under changing climate condition. It is attributed to the later effect on soil water and nutrient availability, which may variably change the competitive ability, and thus survival of tree species seedlings. Currently, determining the response of tree species seedlings to environmental changes in dry tropical ecosystem is a key challenge. Therefore, understanding of factors, which govern the seedling characteristics, are necessary for maintenance and regeneration of these forests. Here, we aim to examine that how nutrient, water and grass interactively affect the tree seedling survival and growth of four dry tropical species viz., Ziziphus mauritiana and Terminalia arjuna (nonleguminous), and Acacia nilotica and Acacia catechu (leguminous). These four species were subjected to eight different combinations of treatments based on water availability, nutrient supplementation and grass competition. Their responses in terms of survival and growth parameters (i.e. height, circumference, aboveground dry weight, number of leaves, leaf area and relative growth rate) were recorded in each combination. It was observed that water and nutrient interactively affected the seedling growth significantly. Under all treatment combinations, leguminous species exhibited higher survival than non-leguminous species, however, a reverse trend was observed for seedlings growth parameters. Presence of grass had significant negative effect on seedling growth in all treatment combinations; however nonleguminous species showed more pronounced effect than leguminous species. We observed a considerable variation in the seedlings growth response of different tree species to the variation in growth conditions in dry tropical environment. The study provides a mechanistic insight about the change in forest community structure with the environmental changes, which would help in devising some management strategies to conserve and restore the dry tropical forest. Topics discussed include data used to assess coverage of air pollution in the Indian city, the use of conditional autoregressive modelling to examine the impact of Land-Use and Land-Cover (LULC) types and findings that revealed small changes to LULC.
