2. A New Paradigm Integrating the Concepts of Particle Abrasion and Breakage

Abstract

This paper introduces a new paradigm that integrates the concepts of particle abrasion and breakage. Both processes can co-occur under loading as soil particles are subjected to friction as well as collisions between particles. Therefore, the significance of this integrating paradigm lies in its ability to address both abrasion and breakage in a single framework. The new paradigm is mapped out in a framework called the 'particle geometry space.' The x-axis corresponds to the surface-area-to-volume ratio ($A/V$), while the y-axis represents volume ($V$). This space facilitates a holistic characterization of the four-particle geometry features, i.e., shape (${\beta}$) and size ($D$) as well as surface area ($A$) and volume ($V$). Three distinct paths (abrasion, breakage, and equally-occurring abrasion and breakage processes), three limit lines (breakage line, sphere line, and average shape-conserving line), and five different zones are defined in the particle geometry space. 3. Phenotypic Trait of Particle Geometries

Abstract

People of a race appear different but share a 'phenotypic trait' due to a common genetic origin. Mineral particles are like humans: they appear different despite having a same geological origin. Then, do the particles have some sort of 'phenotypic trait' in the geometries as we do? How can we characterize the phenotypic trait of particle geometries? This paper discusses a new perspective on how the phenotypic trait can be discovered in the particle geometries and how the 'variation' and 'average' of the geometry can be quantified. The key idea is using the power-law between particle surface-area-to-volume ratio ($A/V$) and the particle volume ($V$) that uncovers the phenotypic trait in terms of ${\alpha}$ and ${\beta}^*$: From the log-transformed relation of $V = (A/V)^{\alpha} {\times} {\beta}^*$, the power value ${\alpha}$ represents the relation between shape and size, while the term ${\beta}^*$ (evaluated by fixing ${\alpha}$ = -3) informs the angularity of the average shape in the granular material. In other words, ${\alpha}$ represents the 'variation' of the geometry while ${\beta}^*$ is concerned with the 'average' geometry of a granular material. Furthermore, this study finds that $A/V$ and $V$ can be also used to characterize individual particle shape in terms of Wadell's true Sphericity ($S$). This paper also revisits the $M = A/V {\times} L/6$ concept originally introduced by Su et al. (2020) and finds the shape index $M$ is an extended form of $S$ providing additional information about the particle elongation. Therefore, the proposed method using $A/V$ and $V$ provides a unified approach that can characterize the particle geometry at multiple scales from granular material to a single particle. Abstract

This study demonstrates the efficacy of employing Rhizopus oryzae fungus inoculum as a potential solution to improve soil erodibility in coastal environments. A set of unconfined compression tests is conducted on Miami Beach sand treated with a R. oryzae inoculum. Our findings suggest that the R. oryzae fungus inoculum effectively improves the stability of sand by acting as a natural binding agent. This finding aligns with previous studies that utilized different Rhizopus species, such as Rhizopus oligosporus, to improve sand properties. However, a notable difference is observed; the R. oryzae-treated sand exhibits remarkable durability, maintaining significant strength over an extended period without water or dietary supply. The durability is likely attributable to the morphological characteristics of R. oryzae that extensively branches its mycelial network. This paper shares the new discovery to the bio-geotechnics research community, potentially allowing for the customization of soil improvement process by choosing between the fast-acting R. oligosporus and the longer-lasting R. oryzae. The significance of this paradigm lies in its ability to present both abrasion and breakage in a single big picture because both processes can co-occur under loading as particles are subjected to friction as well as collision. A comprehensive descriptive framework is employed to this end, which operates in a log-transformed surface-area-to-volume ratio ($A/V$) and volume ($V$) space. This space facilitates a holistic characterization of the four-dimensional particle geometry features, i.e., volume ($V$), surface area ($A$), size ($D$), and shape (${\beta}$). Consequently, this approach enables to systematically relate the co-occurring abrasion and breakage process to co-evolving particle shape and size. Transformative concepts including the breakage line, sphere line, and average shape-conserving line are introduced to describe the limit states and a special comminution process. Abstract

Fixed‐dose combination (FDC) therapy is recommended for hypertension management in Nigeria based on randomized trials at the individual level. This cluster‐randomized trial evaluates effectiveness and safety of a treatment protocol that used two‐drug FDC therapy as the second and third steps for hypertension control compared with a protocol that used free pill combinations. From January 2021 to June 2021, 60 primary healthcare centers in the Federal Capital Territory of Nigeria were randomized to a protocol using FDC therapy as second and third steps compared with a protocol that used the same medications in free pill combination therapy for these steps. Eligible patients were adults (≥18 years) with hypertension. The primary outcome was the odds of a patient being controlled at their last visit between baseline to 6‐month follow‐up in the FDC group compared to the free pill group. 4427 patients (mean [SD] age: 49.0 [12.4] years, 70.5% female) were registered with mean (SD) baseline systolic/diastolic blood pressure 155 (20.6)/96 (13.1) mm Hg. Baseline characteristics of groups were similar. After 6‐months, hypertension control rate improved in the two treatment protocols, but there were no differences between the groups after adjustment (FDC = 53.9% versus free pill combination = 47.9%, cluster‐adjusted p =.29). Adverse events were similarly low (<1%) in both groups. Both protocols improved hypertension control rates at 6‐months in comparison to baseline, though no differences were observed between groups. Further work is needed to determine if upfront FDC therapy is more effective and efficient to improve hypertension control rates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

41. Toxicity of Ortho-phthalaldehyde Aerosols in a Human In VitroAirway Tissue Model

Abstract

Ortho-phthalaldehyde (OPA) is a chemical disinfectant used for the high-level sterilization of heat-sensitive medical instruments. Although OPA is considered a safer alternative to glutaraldehyde, no exposure limits have been established for respiratory exposures to ensure the safety of OPA sterilization and the safe use of OPA-treated medical instruments. In order to address data gaps in the toxicological profile of OPA, we treated human in vitroair–liquid-interface (ALI) airway cultures at the air interface with various concentrations of OPA aerosols for 10 consecutive days. Temporal tissue responses were evaluated at multiple time points during the treatment phase as well as 10 days following the last exposure. The disturbance of glutathione (GSH) homeostasis occurred as early as 20 min following the first exposure, while oxidative stress persisted throughout the treatment phase, as indicated by the sustained induction of heme oxygenase-1 (HMOX-1) expression. Repeated exposures to OPA aerosols resulted in both functional and structural changes, including the inhibition of ciliary beating frequency, aberrant mucin production, decreases in airway secretory cells, and tissue morphological changes. While OPA-induced oxidative stress recovered to control levels after a 10 day recovery period, functional and structural alterations caused by the high concentration of OPA aerosols failed to fully recover over the observation period. These findings indicate that aerosolized OPA induces both transient and relatively persistent functional and structural abnormalities in ALI cultures under the conditions of the current study.

44. ADAM Metallopeptidase Domain 33 (ADAM33): A Promising Target for Asthma

Abstract

Over the last few years, a significant progress has been made in understanding the role of a disintegrin and metalloproteinase 33 (ADAM33) in asthma. The previous observations for the association with asthma have been replicated in over 33 different population samples worldwide. We and others have performed association analysis and meta-analysis and provided further evidence that several polymorphisms in the ADAM33 are risk factors for asthma, especially in the Asian population. Further, several studies have suggested that alterations in epigenetic marks alter the patterns of DNA methylation of ADAM33 and result in potentially adverse biological effects. Finally, while the biological activities of ADAM33 are as yet unknown, ADAM33 may play a possible role in airway remodeling because of its high expression in epithelium, myo/fibroblasts, and airway smooth muscle cells (ASMCs) and its role in promoting angiogenesis and stimulating cell proliferation and differentiation. Thus, ADAM33 represents a promising target for asthma. However, further investigations are clearly needed to discover functional ADAM33 gene polymorphisms and the role of genetic/epigenetic factors in conferring genetic susceptibility to environmental exposure induced asthma as well as biological function in asthma. This, in turn, will unlock the possibility of ADAM33 as a target for asthma therapy.
