The luminescent properties of epitaxial Cu2O thin films were studied in 10–300 K temperature range and compared with the luminescent properties of Cu2O single crystals. Cu2O thin films were deposited epitaxially via the electrodeposition method on either Cu or Ag substrates at different processing parameters, which determined the epitaxial orientation relationships. Cu2O (100) and (111) single crystal samples were cut from a crystal rod grown using the floating zone method. Luminescence spectra of thin films contain the same emission bands as single crystals around 720, 810 and 910 nm, characterizing V O 2 + , V O + and V Cu defects, correspondingly. Additional emission bands, whose origin is under discussion, are observed around 650–680 nm, while the exciton features are negligibly small. The relative mutual contribution of the emission bands varies depending on the thin film sample. The existence of the domains of crystallites with different orientations determines the polarization of luminescence. The PL of both Cu2O thin films and single crystals is characterized by negative thermal quenching in the low-temperature region; the reason of this phenomenon is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The structural, electronic and optical properties of rocksalt Mg 1 − x Zn x O and wurtzite Zn 1 − x Mg x O with the concentration of Zn and Mg varying from 0.125 to 0.875 were investigated using density functional theory (DFT), DFT+U, linear response theory and the Bethe–Salpeter equation. According to the experimental band gap for varied concentrations of magnesium and zinc, modeling the supercell was utilized for the varied concentrations of Mg/Zn/O compounds in order to not only avoid constructing the complicated interface systems that are observed in the experiments but also take into account the excitonic effects that usually require huge computational resources. From the calculated density of states, the Zn states are highly related to the edge of the conduction band minimum and responsible for the width of bandgap. In addition, the contribution of Zn–d states is below expectations as they are located away from the VBM. As for the optical response, an increase in Zn concentration would cause a red-shifted spectrum, on the whole. In contrast, the higher concentration of Mg also triggers the blue-shift of the optical spectrum. In addition, anisotropic properties could be found in the spectrum with consideration of the excitonic effects, whereas there is no apparent difference in optical response based on linear response theory. Photoluminescence (PL) and afterglow luminescence (AGL) produced by UV laser irradiation with varied intensity were studied in AlN ceramics in the 10-300 K temperature range. Luminescence spectra of AlN ceramics contain the UV-blue band built up of two components - the UV (3.18 eV) and Blue (2.58 eV) bands, which are presumably ascribed to recombination luminescence involving oxygen-related centers in the bulk and on the surface of AlN, correspondingly. It was found that position of the emission band maximum of AlN ceramics depends on such factors as excitation density, temperature, and delay time after excitation ceasing - in the case of AGL. In PL spectra, the excitation density growth produces the blue shift of the UV emission band peak, and temperature growth from 10 to 300 K causes first the blue and then the red shift. The most characteristic feature of the AGL is the red shift of the resultant UV-blue peak occurring with growth of delay time after excitation ceasing. Explanations of these phenomena are proposed basing on properties of radiative donor-acceptor pair recombination in semiconductors and varied relative contribution of the UV and Blue components to build-up of the resultant UV-blue band. The optical properties of aluminum nitride nanotips (AlNNTs) synthesized via vapor transport and condensation process have been studied by cathodoluminescence, photoluminescence (PL), thermoluminescence (TL), and UV absorption measurements. Two defect related transitions around 2.1 and 3.4 eV and an excitonic feature at 6.2 eV were identified. Compared to the AlN macropowders, the AlNNTs showed a blueshift (+0.2 eV) of the ∼3.2 eV peak. Analysis of both PL and TL excitation measurements indicated the existence of subband gap multiple energy levels in AlNNTs. A significant TL intensity even at 145 °C suggests possible ultraviolet detector and dosimetric applications of these AlNNTs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
