Abstract

The LOw Frequency ARray (LOFAR) has successfully measured cosmic rays for over a decade now. With its dense core of antenna fields in the Netherlands, it is an ideal tool for studying the radio emission from extensive air showers in the $10^{16}$ eV to $10^{18.5}$ eV range. Every air shower is measured with a small particle detector array and hundreds of antennas, which sets LOFAR apart from other air shower arrays. We present our current achievements and progress in reconstruction, interpolation, and software development during the final phases of measurement of LOFAR 1.0, before the LOFAR array gets a significant upgrade, including also plans for the final data release and refined analyses., Comment: Proceedings of the 10th ARENA Workshop 2024

Abstract

The current generation of air shower radio arrays has demonstrated that the atmospheric depth of the shower maximum Xmax can be reconstructed with high accuracy. These experiments are now contributing to mass composition studies in the energy range where a transition from galactic to extragalactic cosmic-ray sources is expected. However, we are still far away from an unambiguous interpretation of the data. Here we propose to use radio measurements to derive a new type of constraint on the mass composition, by reconstructing the shower length L. The low-frequency part of the Square Kilometer Array will have an extremely high antenna density of roughly 60.000 antennas within one square kilometer, and is the perfect site for high-resolution studies of air showers. Abstract

Analysis of radio signals from cosmic-ray induced air showers has been shown to be a reliable method to extract shower parameters such as primary energy and depth of shower maximum. The required detailed air shower simulations take 1 to 3 days of CPU time per shower for a few hundred antennas. With nearly $60,000$ antennas envisioned to be used for air shower studies at the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), simulating all of these would come at unreasonable costs. We present an interpolation algorithm to reconstruct the full pulse time series at any position in the radio footprint, from a set of antennas simulated on a polar grid. Relying on Fourier series representations and cubic splines, it significantly improves on existing linear methods. We show that simulating about 200 antennas is sufficient for high-precision analysis in the SKA era, including e.g. interferometry which relies on accurate pulse shapes and timings. We therefore propose the interpolation algorithm and its implementation as a useful extension of radio simulation codes, to limit computational effort while retaining accuracy., Comment: 21 pages, 14 figures. Abstract

We explore the possibilities of measuring the longitudinal profile of individual air showers beyond $X_{\rm max}$ when using very dense radio arrays such as SKA. The low-frequency part of the Square Kilometre Array, to be built in Australia, features an enormous antenna density of about $50,000$ antennas in the inner core region of radius 500 m, with a frequency band from 50 to 350 MHz. From CoREAS simulations, a SKA-Low antenna model plus noise contributions, and adapted LOFAR analysis scripts, we obtain a resolution in the shower maximum $X_{\rm max}$ and energy that is considerably better than at LOFAR. Already from this setup, we show that at least one additional parameter of the longitudinal profile can be measured. This would improve mass composition analysis by measuring an additional composition-dependent quantity. Moreover, it would offer an opportunity to discriminate between the different predictions of hadronic interaction models, hence contributing to hadronic physics at energy levels beyond man-made accelerators., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures. Abstract

We present an updated cosmic-ray mass composition analysis in the energy range $10^{16.8}$ to $10^{18.3}$ eV from 334 air showers measured with the LOFAR radio telescope, and selected for minimal bias. In this energy range, the origin of cosmic rays is expected to shift from galactic to extragalactic sources. The analysis is based on an improved method to infer the depth of maximum $X_{\rm max}$ of extensive air showers from radio measurements and air shower simulations. We show results of the average and standard deviation of $X_{\rm max}$ versus primary energy, and analyze the $X_{\rm max}$-dataset at distribution level to estimate the cosmic ray mass composition. Our approach uses an unbinned maximum likelihood analysis, making use of existing parametrizations of $X_{\rm max}$-distributions per element. The analysis has been repeated for three main models of hadronic interactions. Results are consistent with a significant light-mass fraction, at best fit $23$ to $39$ $\%$ protons plus helium, depending on the choice of hadronic interaction model. The fraction of intermediate-mass nuclei dominates. This confirms earlier results from LOFAR, with systematic uncertainties on $X_{\rm max}$ now lowered to 7 to $9$ $\mathrm{g/cm^2}$. We find agreement in mass composition compared to results from Pierre Auger Observatory, within statistical and systematic uncertainties. However, in line with earlier LOFAR results, we find a slightly lower average $X_{\rm max}$. The values are in tension with those found at Pierre Auger Observatory, but agree with results from other cosmic ray observatories based in the Northern hemisphere., Comment: 24 pages, 14 figures. Abstract

For the interpretation of measurements of radio emission from extensive air showers, an important systematic uncertainty arises from natural variations of the atmospheric refractive index $n$. At a given altitude, the refractivity $N=10^6\, (n-1)$ can have relative variations on the order of $10 \%$ depending on temperature, humidity, and air pressure. Typical corrections to be applied to $N$ are about $4\%$. Using CoREAS simulations of radio emission from air showers, we have evaluated the effect of varying $N$ on measurements of the depth of shower maximum $X_{\rm max}$. For an observation band of 30 to 80 MHz, a difference of $4 \%$ in refractivity gives rise to a systematic error in the inferred $X_{\rm max}$ between 3.5 and 11 $\mathrm{g/cm^2}$, for proton showers with zenith angles ranging from 15 to 50 degrees. At higher frequencies, from 120 to 250 MHz, the offset ranges from 10 to 22 $\mathrm{g/cm^2}$. These offsets were found to be proportional to the geometric distance to $X_{\rm max}$. We have compared the results to a simple model based on the Cherenkov angle. For the 120 to 250 MHz band, the model is in qualitative agreement with the simulations. In typical circumstances, we find a slight decrease in $X_{\rm max}$ compared to the default refractivity treatment in CoREAS. While this is within commonly treated systematic uncertainties, accounting for it explicitly improves the accuracy of $X_{\rm max}$ measurements., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures. Abstract

Extensive air showers, induced by high energy cosmic rays impinging on the Earth's atmosphere, produce radio emission that is measured with the LOFAR radio telescope. As the emission comes from a finite distance of a few kilometers, the incident wavefront is non-planar. A spherical, conical or hyperbolic shape of the wavefront has been proposed, but measurements of individual air showers have been inconclusive so far. For a selected high-quality sample of 161 measured extensive air showers, we have reconstructed the wavefront by measuring pulse arrival times to sub-nanosecond precision in 200 to 350 individual antennas. For each measured air shower, we have fitted a conical, spherical, and hyperboloid shape to the arrival times. The fit quality and a likelihood analysis show that a hyperboloid is the best parametrization. Using a non-planar wavefront shape gives an improved angular resolution, when reconstructing the shower arrival direction. Furthermore, a dependence of the wavefront shape on the shower geometry can be seen. This suggests that it will be possible to use a wavefront shape analysis to get an additional handle on the atmospheric depth of the shower maximum, which is sensitive to the mass of the primary particle., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astroparticle Physics

Abstract

We report on a novel non-intrusive way to investigate electric fields in thunderclouds.Energetic cosmic rays penetrating the atmosphere create a particle avalanche called an extensive air shower. The front of the shower is a plasma cloud that contains 10^6 or more free electrons and positrons moving towards the Earth's surface at the speed of light. The electric fields that exists in thunderclouds induces electric currents in the plasma cloud that emit radio waves. The radio footprint for intensity, linear and circular polarization thus contains the finger print of the atmospheric electric fields along the path of the air shower.Here we report on the analysis of many cosmic-ray radio footprints as have been measured at LOFAR, a dense array of simple radio antennas (several thousands of dual-polarized antennas) primarily developed for radio-astronomy observations. We show that this method can be used to determine the charge structure in thunderclouds and discuss the accuracy of the method. We have observed seasonal dependencies.

Abstract

LOFAR (LOw Frequency ARray) is a radio telescope that consists of a large number of dual-polarized antennas spread over the northern Netherlands and beyond. The LOFAR for Lightning Imaging project (LOFAR-LIM) has successfully used LOFAR to map out lightning in the Netherlands. Since LOFAR covers a large frequency range (10-90 MHz), has antennas spread over a large area, and saves the raw trace data from the antennas, LOFAR-LIM can combine all the strongest aspects of both lightning mapping arrays and lightning interferometers. These aspects include a nanosecond resolution between pulses, nanosecond timing accuracy, and an ability to map lightning in all 3 spatial dimensions and time. LOFAR should be able to map out overhead lightning with a spatial accuracy on the order of meters. The large amount of complex data provide by LOFAR has presented new data processing challenges, such as handling the time offsets between stations with large baselines and locating as many sources as possible. New algorithms to handle these challenges have been developed and will be discussed. Since the antennas are dual-polarized, all three components of the electric field can be extracted and the structure of the R.F. pulses can be investigated at a large number of distances and angles relative to the lightning source, potentially allowing for modeling of lightning current distributions relevant to the 10 to 90 MHz frequency range. R.F. pulses due to leader propagation will be presented, which show a complex sub-structure, indicating intricate physics that could potentially be reconstructed.

Energetic cosmic rays impinging on the atmosphere create a particle avalanche called an extensive air shower. In the leading plasma of this shower electric currents are induced that generate radio waves which have been detected with LOFAR, a large and dense array of simple antennas primarily developed for radio-astronomy observations.LOFAR has observed air showers under fair-weather conditions as well as under atmospheric conditions where thunderstorms occur. For air showers under fair-weather conditions the intensity as well as the polarization of the radio emission can be understood rather accurately from the present models.For air showers measured under thunderstorm conditions we observe large differences in the intensity and polarization patterns from the fair weather models. We will show that the linear as well as the circular polarization of the radio waves carry clear information on the orientation of the electric fields at different heights in the thunderstorm clouds. We will show for the first time that the circular polarization of the radio waves tells about the change of orientation of the fields with altitude. We will show that from the measured data at LOFAR the thunderstorm electric fields can be reconstructed.We thus have established the measurement of radio emission from extensive air showers induced by cosmic rays as a new tool to probe the atmospheric electric fields present in thunderclouds in a non-intrusive way.

Abstract

As is well known a sufficient density of free electrons and strong electric fields are the basic requirements to start any electrical discharge. In the context of thunderstorm discharges it has become clear that in addition droplets and or ice particles are required to enhance the electric field to values above breakdown. In our recent study [1] we have shown that these three ingredients have to interplay to allow for lightning inception, triggered by an extensive air shower event. The extensive air showers are a very stochastic natural phenomenon, creating highly coherent sub-nanosecond enhancements of the atmospheric electron density. Predicting these electron density enhancements accurately one has to take the uncertainty of the input variables into account. For this study we use the initial energy, inclination and altitude of first interaction, which will influence the evolution of the shower significantly. To this end, we use the stochastic collocation method, [2] to post-process our detailed Monte Carlo extensive air shower simulations, done with the CORSIKA [3] software package, which provides an efficient and elegant way to determine the distribution of the atmospheric electron density enhancements. Abstract

Energetic cosmic rays impinging on the atmosphere create a particle avalanche called extensive air shower. In the leading plasma of this shower, electric currents are induced that generate the emission of radio waves which have been detected with LOFAR (www.lofar.org), an array of a large number of simple antennas primarily developed for radio-astronomy observations. Events have been collected under fair-weather conditions as well as under atmospheric conditions where thunderstorms occur. Of the 196 radio pulses detected under fair weather conditions, the intensity as well as the polarization can be reproduced rather accurately for 192 events with the standard model [1] using a superposition of a geomagnetically-induced transverse current and charge excess contributions. This indicates that the emission process is well understood. However, for most of the events measured under thunderstorm conditions as well as for 4 fair weather events we observe large differences in intensity and polarization pattern from the fair weather model. For these events it is not possible to get a good fit of the measured intensity pattern. The dominant polarization direction differs from the expected v x B orientation. We show that this difference is a consequence of atmospheric electric fields. We also show that the effects of atmospheric electric fields are understood, and that from the cosmic-ray radio footprint the atmospheric electric field can be deduced. [1] P. 48. Synthesis of copper nanoparticles by a sonication-mediated method using Malpighia glabra fruit extract and their applications.

Abstract

This study introduces an environmentally friendly technique for copper nanoparticle synthesis utilizing Malpighia glabra fruit extract under the sonication treatment. The synthesis process and phenol red removal were optimized by a central composite full and response surface design. Highly pure and spherical-shaped copper nanoparticles with an average size of 22.5 nm were formed using 7.4 mL of Malpighia glabra fruit extract and 21.9 mM (AcO) 2 Cu. Additionally, the extract-mediated nanoparticles opposed the negative charges with a zeta potential of -11.8 mV and high stability of 30 days storage time. The sonication-assisted nanoparticles exhibited the highest inhibition against Gram-positive bacteria ( Bacillus subtilis and Staphylococcus aureus ), MCF7 human breast cancer cells, and Fusarium solani with 50% inhibition concentrations reaching 12, 0.82, and 80 ppm, respectively. Additionally, the green-synthesized nanomaterials functioned as an effective catalyst to remove phenol red. A conversion of 97% after a 540 seconds reaction was determined on 10 ppm phenol red with the presence of 21.5 ppm copper nanoparticles and 51.8 mM NaBH 4 . 49. A pilot study of a virtual reality-based simulation platform for Neonatal Resuscitation Program training.

Abstract

Objective: This pilot implementation study introduces a novel, neonatal-specific virtual reality (VR) simulation platform for resuscitation training and assesses its initial feasibility and reception in a neonatal intensive care unit setting., Study Design: We developed a custom VR model simulating a resuscitation scenario for a 30-week neonate. Neonatal providers completed individualized training sessions and post-training surveys., Results: Thirty-eight neonatal providers participated in the study. The VR platform was well-received, with 97% willing to use it again and 95% recommending it. Most participants (70.3%) found VR more realistic than traditional methods, with an average usefulness rating of 4.5/5. However, 40.5% reported adverse effects like eye strain and motion sickness. Feedback led to three significant VR platform upgrades., Conclusion: This study demonstrates strong enthusiasm for VR among neonatal providers. While promising, further research with larger samples and comparisons to traditional methods is needed to fully evaluate VR's effectiveness in neonatal resuscitation training., (© 2024. Abstract

In this article, we investigate the incorporation of virtual reality (VR) into Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) training. We describe the potential advantages and challenges of the use of VR with NRP. We compare conventional training approaches to VR-based simulation, reviewing diverse VR platforms and their specific roles in neonatal resuscitation education.
