Football teams draw the largest crowds of any American collegiate sport, and with them, both positive and negative attention for colleges and universities. Nearly 50 colleges have added the sport recently, but little research has examined the institutional effects of adding a team. Some of these institutions are regional research universities adding the sport as part of broad plans to transform campus identities, while at smaller public and private institutions, adding a football team (with approximately 100 members) appears to be an attempt to boost racial diversity and the number of male students. This study uses difference-in-difference models to find that adding a football team appears to have a significant, but short-term, effect on enrollment and tuition revenue. The long-term effects of adding the sport do not appear to be statistically significant. This raises questions about the costs and benefits of adding football at a time when higher education faces significant challenges attracting students.

This article attempts to present, for the first time, the usefulness and feasibility of using endoscopic techniques in the cloacal region of Varanus cumingi and Varanus macraei. This method can serve both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, as well as offering an early approach to sex determination through the observation of the urodeum which in males ends in a blind end while in females it consists of two ostia which represent the outlets of the oviducts. In this context, commonly employed sex determination techniques, such as post-cloacal spur detection, have shown unreliability. The study involved the examination of ten specimens, approximately one year old, from a private breeding farm, following a complete clinical evaluation to confirm their general state of health. All subjects underwent sedation, which allowed the evaluation of anatomical structures, the health status of the cloaca and the determination of sex. This study and its findings may provide a critical basis for addressing population declines of these species, particularly for V. macraei, which has already been classified as ‘endangered’ by the IUCN.

INTRODUCTION: Historical reservations regarding stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) for small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) brain metastases include concerns for short-interval and diffuse central nervous system (CNS) progression, poor prognoses, and increased neurological mortality specific to SCLC histology. We compared SRS outcomes for SCLC and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) where SRS is well established. METHODS: Multicenter first-line SRS outcomes for SCLC and NSCLC from 2000 to 2022 were retrospectively collected (n = 892 SCLC, n = 4785 NSCLC). Data from the prospective Japanese Leksell Gamma Knife Society (JLGK0901) clinical trial of first-line SRS were analyzed as a comparison cohort (n = 98 SCLC, n = 814 NSCLC). Overall survival (OS) and CNS progression were analyzed using Cox proportional hazard and Fine-Gray models, respectively, with multivariable adjustment for cofactors including age, sex, performance status, year, extracranial disease status, and brain metastasis number and volume. Mutation-stratified analyses were performed in propensity score-matched retrospective cohorts of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) positive NSCLC, mutation-negative NSCLC, and SCLC. Brain metastases are an increasing global public health concern, even as survival rates improve for patients with metastatic disease. Both metastases and the sequelae of their treatment are key determinants of the inter-related priorities of patient survival, function, and quality of life, mandating a multidimensional approach to clinical care and research. At a virtual National Cancer Institute Workshop in September, 2022, key stakeholders convened to define research priorities to address the crucial areas of unmet need for patients with brain metastases to achieve meaningful advances in patient outcomes. This Policy Review outlines existing knowledge gaps, collaborative opportunities, and specific recommendations regarding consensus priorities and future directions in brain metastases research. Achieving major advances in research will require enhanced coordination between the ongoing efforts of individual organisations and consortia. Importantly, the continual and active engagement of patients and patient advocates will be necessary to ensure that the directionality of all efforts reflects what is most meaningful in the context of patient care.

Abstract Background and Objectives Almost one third of cancer patients in the United States will develop brain metastases on an annual basis. Surgical resection is indicated in the setting of brain metastases for reasons, such as maximizing local control in select patients, decompression of mass effect, and/or tissue diagnosis. The current standard of care following resection of a brain metastasis has shifted from whole brain radiation therapy to post-operative stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS). However, there is a significant rate of local recurrence within one year of postoperative SRS. Emerging retrospective and prospective data suggest pre-operative SRS is a safe and potentially effective treatment paradigm for surgical brain metastases. This trial intends to determine, for patients with an indication for resection of a brain metastasis, whether there is an increase in the time to a composite endpoint of adverse outcomes; including the first occurrence of either: local recurrence, leptomeningeal disease, or symptomatic radiation brain necrosis - in patients who receive pre-operative SRS as compared to patients who receive post-operative SRS. Methods This randomized phase III clinical trial compares pre-operative with post-operative SRS for brain metastases. A dynamic random allocation procedure will allocate an equal number of patients to each arm: pre-operative SRS followed by surgery or surgery followed by post-operative SRS. Expected outcomes If pre-operative SRS improves outcomes relative to post-operative SRS, this will establish pre-operative SRS as superior. If post-operative SRS proves superior to pre-operative SRS, it will remain a standard of care and halt the increasing utilization of pre-operative SRS. If there is no difference in pre- versus post-operative SRS, then pre-operative SRS may still be preferred, given patient convenience and the potential for a condensed timeline. Discussion Emerging retrospective and prospective data have demonstrated some benefits of pre-op SRS vs. post-op SRS. This study will show whether there is an increase in the time to the composite endpoint. Additionally, the study will compare overall survival; patient-reported outcomes; morbidity; completion of planned therapies; time to systemic therapy; time to regional progression; time to CNS progression; time to subsequent treatment; rate of radiation necrosis; rate of local recurrence; and rate of leptomeningeal disease. Abstract Background Brain metastases (BM) affect clinical management and prognosis but limited resources exist to estimate BM risk in newly diagnosed cancer patients. Additionally, guidelines for brain MRI screening are limited. We aimed to develop and validate models to predict risk of BM at diagnosis for the most common cancer types that spread to the brain. Methods Breast cancer, melanoma, kidney cancer, colorectal cancer (CRC), small cell lung cancer (SCLC), and non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) data were extracted from the National Cancer Database to evaluate for the variables associated with the presence of BM at diagnosis. Multivariable logistic regression (LR) models were developed and performance was evaluated with Area Under the Receiver Operating Characteristic Curve (AUC) and random-split training and testing datasets. Nomograms and a Webtool were created for each cancer type. Results We identify 4,828,305 patients from 2010-2018 (2,095,339 breast cancer, 472,611 melanoma, 407,627 kidney cancer, 627,090 CRC, 164,864 SCLC, and 1,060,774 NSCLC). The proportion of patients with BM at diagnosis is 0.3%, 1.5%, 1.3%, 0.3%, 16.0%, and 10.3% for breast cancer, melanoma, kidney cancer, CRC, SCLC, and NSCLC, respectively. The average AUC over 100 random splitting for the LR models is 0.9534 for breast cancer, 0.9420 for melanoma, 0.8785 for CRC, 0.9054 for kidney cancer, 0.7759 for NSCLC, and 0.6180 for SCLC. Conclusions We develop accurate models that predict the BM risk at diagnosis for multiple cancer types. The nomograms and Webtool may aid clinicians in considering brain MRI at the time of initial cancer diagnosis.

Dangerous emerging water micropollutants like Diclofenac are harming ecosystems all over the planet, and immediate action is needed. The large bandgap photocatalysts conventionally used to degrade them need to be more efficient. Cu2ZnSnS4, a well-known light absorber in photovoltaics with a bandgap of 1.5 eV, can efficiently harvest an abundant portion of the solar spectrum. However, its photocatalytic activity has so far only been reported in relation to the degradation of organic dyes, and it is usually used as a benchmark to assess the activity of a photocatalyst without testing its actual potential on a hazardous water micropollutant conventionally encountered in primary and secondary waters. Here, we report the promising photocatalytic activity of Cu2ZnSnS4 nanoparticles in the degradation of Diclofenac, chosen as a benchmark for dangerous emerging water micropollutants.

BackgroundIn patients with newly diagnosed glioblastoma, rapid early progression (REP) refers to tumor regrowth between surgery and postoperative chemoradiotherapy. This systematic review and meta-analysis appraised previously published data on REP to better characterize and understand it.MethodsSystematic searches of MEDLINE, EMBASE and the Cochrane database from inception to October 21, 2021. Studies describing the incidence of REP-tumor growth between the postoperative MRI scan and pre-radiotherapy MRI scan in newly diagnosed glioblastoma were included. The primary outcome was REP incidence.ResultsFrom 1590 search results, 9 studies were included with 716 patients. The median age was 56.9 years (IQR 54.0-58.8 y). There was a male predominance with a median male-to-female ratio of 1.4 (IQR 1.1-1.5). The median number of days between MRI scans was 34 days (IQR 18-45 days). We aimed to validate a long and a short version of the popular SDO6 scale for children, by testing their reliability and factorial structure, as well as divergent and criterion validity. Italian fourth- and fifth-graders (N = 271; 49.45% female) were administered the Child SDO6 scale, composed of 16 items, along with a series of personality and intergroup relations measures (using foreigners as the minority group). Paralleling results obtained with adults, findings concerning the short version provided evidence for a two-factorial structure, consisting of an SDO-Dominance and an SDO-Anti-egalitarianism dimension. Both for the long and the short version, greater levels of SDO-Dominance and SDO-Anti-egalitarianism were associated with more neuroticism, attitudinal and stereotypic bias, and with less agreeableness, openness to experience, dispositional and intergroup empathy. In conclusions, the two SDO dimensions as assessed by the short Child SDO6 Scale may be relevant variables to consider when testing intergroup relations processes among children.
