We study the quantum dynamics of the encoding scheme proposed in [Nguyen et al., PRX Quantum 4, 010316 (2023)], which encodes optimization problems on graphs with arbitrary connectivity into Rydberg atom arrays. Here, a graph vertex is represented by a wire of atoms, and the (crossing) crossing-with-edge gadget is placed at the intersection of two wires to (de)couple their degrees of freedom and reproduce the graph connectivity. We consider the fundamental geometry of two vertex-wires intersecting via a single gadget and look at minimum gap scaling with system size along adiabatic protocols. We find that both polynomial and exponential scaling are possible and, by means of perturbation theory, we relate the exponential closing of the minimum gap to an unfavorable localization of the ground-state wavefunction. Then, on the QuEra Aquila neutral atom machine, we observe such localization and its effect on the success probability of finding the correct solution to the encoded optimization problem. Finally, we propose possible strategies to avoid this quantum bottleneck, leading to an exponential improvement in the adiabatic performance.

High-frequency micrometrical vibrations have been shown to greatly influence the adhesive performance of soft interfaces, however a detailed comparison between theoretical predictions and experimental results is still missing. Here, the problem of a rigid spherical indenter, hung on a soft spring, that is unloaded from an adhesive viscoelastic vibrating substrate is considered. The experimental tests were performed by unloading a borosilicate glass lens from a soft PDMS substrate excited by high-frequency micrometrical vibrations. We show that as soon as the vibration starts, the contact area increases abruptly and during unloading it decreases following approximately the JKR classical model, but with a much increased work of adhesion. We find that the pull-off force increases with respect to the amplitude of vibration up to a certain saturation level, which appeared to be frequency dependent. Under the hypothesis of short range adhesion, a lumped mechanical model was derived, which, starting from an independent characterization of the rate-dependent interfacial adhesion, predicted qualitatively and quantitatively the experimental results, without the need of any adjustable parameters.

The contact between a rigid Hertzian indenter and an adhesive broad-band viscoelastic substrate is considered. The material behaviour is described by a modified power law model, which is characterized by only four parameters, the glassy and rubbery elastic moduli, a characteristic exponent n and a timescale ${\tau}_0$. The maximum adherence force that can be reached while unloading the rigid indenter from a relaxed viscoelastic half-space is studied by means of a numerical implementation based on the boundary element method, as a function of the unloading velocity, preload and by varying the broadness of the viscoelastic material spectrum. Through a comprehensive numerical analysis we have determined the minimum contact radius that is needed to achieve the maximum amplification of the pull-off force at a specified unloading rate and for different material exponents n. The numerical results are then compared with the prediction of Persson and Brener viscoelastic crack propagation theory, providing excellent agreement. However, comparison against experimental tests for a glass lens indenting a PDMS substrate show data can be fitted with the linear theory only up to an unloading rate of about $100 \textrm{ $\mu$}$m/s showing the fracture process zone rate-dependent contribution to the energy enhancement is of the same order of the bulk dissipation contribution. Hence, the limitations of the current numerical and theoretical models for viscoelastic adhesion are discussed in light of the most recent literature results.

We discuss time-optimal control problems for two setups involving globally driven Rydberg atoms in the blockade limit by deriving the associated Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations. From these equations, we extract the globally optimal trajectories and the corresponding controls for several target processes of the atomic system, using a generalized method of characteristics. We apply this method to retrieve known results for CZ and C-phase gates, and to find new optimal pulses for all elementary processes involved in the universal quantum computation scheme introduced in [Physical Review Letters 131, 170601 (2023)].

Monolithic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represent a promising solution for the industrial implementation of this emerging class of multifunctional materials, due to their structural stability. When compared to MOF powders, monoliths exhibit other intriguing properties like hierarchical porosity, that significantly improves volumetric adsorption capacity. The mechanical characterization of MOF monoliths plays a pivotal role in their industrial expansion, but so far, several key aspects remain unclear. In particular, the fracture behavior of MOF monoliths has not been explored. In this work, we studied the initiation and propagation of cracks in four prototypical MOF monoliths, namely ZIF-8, HKUST-1, MIL-68 and MOF-808. We observed that shear faults inside the contact area represent the main failure mechanism of MOF monoliths and are the source of radial cracks. Organic photoswitchable molecules have struggled in solid state form to fulfill their remarkable potential, in terms of photoswitching performance and long-term stability when compared to their inorganic counterparts. We report the concept of non-electron deficient host's surface with optimal porosity and hydrophobicity, as a priori strategy to design photoefficient organic solid-state photochromic materials with outstanding mechanical robustness. When exposed to a light stimulus including natural sunlight, the photoswitchable nanocomposite changes color promptly and reversibly, in a matter of seconds along with excellent photo-fatigue resistance, which are on a par with inorganic photochromes. Exemplars of commercially viable prototypes that are optically clear, comprising smart windows, complex photochromic sculptures, and self-erasing rewritable devices, were engineered by direct blending with resilient polymers; particularly, the use of high-stiffness polymer (> 2 GPa) is no longer an insurmountable challenge. The synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in a monolithic morphology is a promising way to achieve the transition of this class of materials from academia to industrial applications. The sol-gel process has been widely employed to produce MOF monoliths. It is relatively cheap and simple compared to other techniques (e.g., mechanical densification) and moreover it allows to produce "pure" monoliths, i.e., without the need of using binders or templates that could affect the functional properties of the MOF. Understanding the mechanical properties of these monoliths is crucial for their transit to practical applications. We studied the mechanical behavior of two zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIF-8 and ZIF-71) by means of instrumented nanoindentation and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Tip Force Microscopy (TFM), an extension of AFM, was used to reveal the surface nanostructure of the monoliths. We employed finite-element (FE) simulations alongside the experiments, to establish a suitable constitutive model and determine an improved estimate of the yield stress of ZIF monoliths. NanoFTIR was subsequently used to pinpoint local structural alteration of the framework in the contact area. The combination of TFM, FE simulations, and nanoFTIR enabled us to identify the mechanical deformation mechanisms in monolithic ZIF materials: grain boundaries sliding is dominating at low stresses, then breakage of chemical bonds and a partial failure of the framework occurs, eventually leading to a densification of porous framework at the contact zone. Exploration of asteroid (101955) Bennu by the OSIRIS-REx mission has provided an in-depth look at this rubble-pile near-Earth asteroid. In particular, the measured gravity field and the detailed shape model of Bennu indicate significant heterogeneities in its interior structure, compatible with a lower density at its center. Here we combine gravity inversion methods with a statistical rubble-pile model to determine the density and size-frequency distribution (SFD) index of the rubble that constitutes Bennu. The best-fitting models indicate that the SFD of the interior is consistent with that observed on the surface, with a cumulative SFD index of approximately $-2.9$. The rubble bulk density is approximately $1.35$ g/cm$^3$, corresponding to a $12$% macro-porosity. We study the photon statistics of weak coherent pulses propagating through a cold Rydberg atomic ensemble in the regime of Rydberg electromagnetically induced transparency. We show experimentally that the value of the second-order autocorrelation function of the transmitted light strongly depends on the position within the pulse and heavily varies during the transients of the pulse. In particular, we show that the falling edge of the transmitted pulse displays much lower values than the rest of the pulse. We derive a theoretical model that quantitatively predicts our results and explains the physical behavior involved. Finally, we use this effect to generate single photons localized within a pulse from the atomic ensemble. We show that by selecting only the last part of the transmitted pulse, the single photons show an antibunching parameter as low as 0.12 and a generation efficiency per trial larger than possible with probabilistic generation schemes with atomic ensembles., Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures

Materials that change their shape in response to external stimuli opens up new prospects for efficient and versatile design and shaping of three-dimensional objects. Here, we present a novel class of micro-structures exhibiting an extension-bending coupling (EBC) effect, that can be harnessed as an elementary building block for shape-shifting panels. They are built with a single material as a network of undulated ribbons. The deformations mechanisms of both single and connected undulated ribbons are analysed using the finite element method to explain the main features of the EBC mechanism. For a particular micro-structure of the proposed class, the complete elastic stiffness tensor is computed combining two-scale homogenization with Kirchhoff-Love plate theory. The range of achievable EBC ratio is then assessed with respect to the geometric parameters of the unit cell. Patterned specimens are manufactured using a commercial FFF Ultimaker 3-d printer and are mechanically tested at finite strain up to 20%. The displacement measured by point tracking match the predictions from the finite element simulations and indicate that the structure maintain its properties at finite strain. Moreover, a tensile test load with point-like boundary is proposed to highlight exceptional out of plane displacement. We envision these structures to be leveraged in combination with responsive materials for the actuation of soft robots, compliant systems and reconfigurable structures, as alternatives to external mechanical motors, control systems and power devices., Comment: 17 pages, 8 figures, 2 appendices

In this paper we study, in the time domain, the interaction between localized surface plasmons and photons in arbitrarily shaped metal nanoparticles, by using the Hopfield approach to quantize the plasmon modes, where the electron oscillations are represented by a harmonic matter field linearly coupled to the electromagnetic radiation. The plasmon - photon coupling gives rise to dressed plasmon modes. We have found that the radiation does not induce a significant coupling among the different quasi-electrostatic plasmon modes for particles of size up to the plasma wavelength, but causes a frequency shift and an exponential decay in time of the modes. By solving the equations governing the expectation values of the plasmon creation and annihilation operators, we obtain a new closed-form full-wave expression for the decay rate and for the frequency shift of the plasmon modes. It is non-perturbative and it only depends on the surface charge distribution of the quasi-electrostatic plasmon modes. We validate the expression against the Mie theory for a nano-sphere of radius comparable to the plasma wavelength. Eventually, we investigate the decay rate and the frequency shift of the plasmon modes in isolated and interacting nanoparticle of non-canonical shape, as their size increases up to the plasma wavelength.

A small dielectric object with positive permittivity may resonate when the free-space wavelength is large in comparison with the object dimensions if the permittivity is sufficiently high. We show that these resonances are described by the magnetoquasistatic approximation of the Maxwell's equations in which the normal component of the displacement current density field vanishes on the surface of the particle. They are associated to values of permittivities and frequencies for which source-free quasistatic magnetic fields exist, which are connected to the eigenvalues of a magnetostatic integral operator. We present the general physical properties of magnetoquasistatic resonances in dielectrics with arbitrary shape. They arise from the interplay between the polarization energy stored in the dielectric and the energy stored in the magnetic field. Our findings improve the understanding of resonances in high-permittivity dielectric objects and provide a powerful tool that greatly simplifies the analysis and design of high index resonators.

The plasmon hybridization theory is based on a quasi-electrostatic approximation of the Maxwell's equations. It does not take into account magnetic interactions, retardation effects, and radiation losses. Magnetic interactions play a dominant role in the scattering from dielectric nanoparticles. The retardation effects play a fundamental role in the coupling of the modes with the incident radiation and in determining their radiative strength; their exclusion may lead to erroneous predictions of the excited modes and of the scattered power spectra. Radiation losses may lead to a significant broadening of the scattering resonances. We propose a hybridization theory for non-hermitian composite systems based on the full-Maxwell equations that, overcoming all the limitations of the plasmon hybridization theory, unlocks the description of dielectric dimers. As an example, we decompose the scattered field from silicon and silver dimers, under different excitation conditions and gap-sizes, in terms of dimer modes, pinpointing the hybridizing isolated-sphere modes behind them., Comment: Supplemental material available upon request

The electromagnetic modes and the resonances of homogeneous, finite size, two-dimensional bodies are examined in the frequency domain by a rigorous full wave approach based on an integro-differential formulation of the electromagnetic scattering problem. Using a modal expansion for the current density that disentangles the geometric and material properties of the body the integro-differential equation for the induced surface (free or polarization) current density field is solved. The current modes and the corresponding resonant values of the surface conductivity (eigen-conductivities) are evaluated by solving a linear eigenvalue problem with a non-Hermitian operator. They are inherent properties of the body geometry and do not depend on the body material. The material only determines the coefficients of the modal expansion and hence the frequencies at which their amplitudes are maximum (resonance frequencies). The eigen-conductivities and the current modes are studied in detail as the frequency, the shape and the size of the body vary. Open and closed surfaces are considered. The presence of vortex current modes, in addition to the source-sink current modes (no whirling modes), which characterize plasmonic oscillations, is shown. Important topological features of the current modes, such as the number of sources and sinks, the number of vortexes, the direction of the vortexes are preserved as the size of the body and the frequency vary. Unlike the source-sink current modes, in open surfaces the vortex current modes can be resonantly excited only in materials with positive imaginary part of the surface conductivity. Eventually, as examples, the scattering by two-dimensional bodies with either positive or negative imaginary part of the surface conductivity is analyzed and the contributions of the different modes are examined.

We demonstrate the directional scattering cancellation for a dielectric sphere of radius up to ten times the incident wavelength, by coating it with a surface of finite conductivity. Specifically, the problem of determining the values of the surface conductivity that guarantees destructive interference among hundreds of multipolar scattering orders at the prescribed angular direction is reduced to the determination of the zeros of a polynomial, whose coefficients are analytically known.

We analyse the resonance conditions of a long and narrow ribbon of finite length whether it is conductive or dielectric. This is accomplished by using a full wave approach based on the material independent modes that naturally discriminates the role of the geometry and of the material. This method effectively allows the design of the material in such a way to obtain the desired resonances. Eventually, as an example, we design two quasi-one dimensional resonators based on a graphene layer and on a silicon thin film.

In the frame of volume integral equation methods, we introduce an alternative representation of the electromagnetic field scattered by a homogeneous object of arbitrary shape at a given frequency, in terms of a set of modes independent of its permittivity. This is accomplished by introducing an auxiliary eigenvalue problem, based on a volume integral operator. With this modal basis the expansion coefficients of the scattered field are simple rational functions of the permittivity of the scatterer. We show, by studying the electromagnetic scattering from a sphere and a cylinder of dimensions comparable to the incident wavelength, that only a moderate number of modes is needed to accurately describe the scattered far field. This method can be used to investigate resonant scattering phenomena, including plasmonic and photonic resonances, and to design the permittivity of the object to pursue a prescribed tailoring of the scattered field. Moreover, the presented modal expansion is computationally advantageous compared to direct solution of the volume integral equation when the scattered field has to be computed for many different values of the dielectric permittivity, given the size and shape of the dielectric body.

Determining the size and orbital distribution of the population of near-Earth asteroids (NEAs) is the focus of intense research, with the most recent models converging to a population of approximately $1000$ NEAs larger than 1 km and up to approximately $10^9$ NEAs with absolute magnitude $H<30$. We present an analysis of the combined observations of nine of the leading asteroid surveys over the past two decades, and show that for an absolute magnitude $H<17.75$, which is often taken as proxy for an average diameter larger than 1 km, the population of NEAs is $920\pm10$, lower than other recent estimates. The population of small NEAs is estimated at $(4 \pm 1)\times 10^8$ for $H<30$, and the number of decameter NEAs is lower than other recent estimates. This population tracks accurately the orbital distribution of recently discovered large NEAs, and produces an estimated Earth impact rate for small NEAs in good agreement with the bolide data., Comment: 21 pages, 1 table, 10 figures, accepted for publication in Icarus
