The Mesozoic witnessed some episodes of marked accumulation and burial of organic matter (OM) in the Tethys Ocean and satellite basins, such as the Vocontian Basin (SE-France). These famous episodes, termed Oceanic Anoxic Events (OAEs), resulted from various factors, acting in complex synergies; the consensus about the key factors has not been reached yet. The Aptian–Albian Blue Marls Formation (Fm.) of the Vocontian Basin recorded the various substages of OAE1, plus additional organic-rich levels of regional extension. The semi-pelagic marlstones of the Blue Marls Fm. allow to carry out a detailed examination of the molecular fossils, to assess the respective weights of the factors involved in the OM storage process. In this work, we examined the lipid biomarkers of six organic-rich levels ranging from the Goguel Level to the Paquier Level in stratigraphic order. Biomarkers reputed to be characteristic of some OAEs are observed here: 2-methylhopanoids in the Goguel Level (OAE1a) and archaeal lipids in the Jacob, Kilian and Paquier Levels (OAE1b). This study shows that, in the Vocontian Basin, OM deposition resulted mostly from local factors and that each level has its own peculiarities; however, overarching connections with the Tethys Ocean were critical for the recording of global anoxic events.

This work examines the possibility of a rapid formation of glauconite in a relatively shallow platform environment (below fair-weather wave baseline). The materials studied here are uppermost Jurassic alternations of carbonate beds and marly interbeds, namely, the Assises de Croï Formation of the Boulonnais area (northernmost France). The carbonate beds yield field evidences of an early diagenetic origin and both beds and interbeds contain glauconite, questioning the duration of formation of the glauconite, relative to that of the diagenetic carbonate beds. Carbon and oxygen stable isotope composition of the carbonate beds confirm an early diagenetic growth. Contrasted grain-size distribution patterns of glauconite and quartz grain populations (isolated after acid digestion and magnetic separation) evidenced that glauconite formed after sediment deposition. Glauconite formation allegedly requires protracted episodes of ion capture from the water column, which is no longer possible when glauconite gets trapped within authigenic carbonates. Therefore, in-situ glauconite formation preceded carbonate authigenesis. Yet, the chemical composition of grains (Fe and K) typifies glauconite as highly evolved, meaning that its formation must have lasted over times, according to conventional views. Consequently, our results challenge these conventional views and confirm that glauconite can form in relatively shallow environments (which has been already brought to light previously) and it is concluded that early diagenetic glauconite can be markedly enriched in both K and Fe, which is an unprecedented result.

Glauconite is an authigenic mineral reputed to form during long-lasting contact between a nucleus (a pre-existing phyllosilicate) and seawater. This protracted contact makes it possible to subtract the ions necessary for the construction of the neoformed phyllosilicate, here, glauconite (a mineral very close to an illite, rich in K and Fe). As a result, glauconite is often associated with sediments deposited in a transgressive context with a strong slowdown in the rate of sedimentation and a relatively large water layer thickness. This is the case of the Cenomanian chalk of Boulonnais (north of France). Being chemically and physically resistant, glauconite is a mineral that is often reworked, like quartz grains. This is frequently the case of the Jurassic deposits of the Boulonnais, where glauconite, almost ubiquitous, either in traces or in significant proportions of the sediments, presents a grain size sorting attesting to its transport and reworking. However, these Jurassic deposits are shallow (shoreface, upper offshore), which supports the idea that the “glauconite factory” was itself in the shallow areas of the Boulonnais. The only identified Jurassic facies of the Boulonnais where glauconite is both relatively abundant, large in size and unsorted (non reworked) are oyster reefs that formed at the outlet of cold seeps linked to a late-Jurassic synsedimentary tectonic (Kimmeridgian, Tithonian). Our work makes it possible to hypothesize that isolated oyster reefs were environments combining the redox conditions and in contact with seawater favoring the authigenic formation of glauconite. The weakly reducing conditions necessary for the formation of glauconite here are attested by the contents of metallic trace elements sensitive to redox conditions (vanadium, germanium, arsenic, in this case). Our work thus adds a new element to the understanding of the mechanisms of formation of glauconite in shallow environments.

Two redox-sensitive metalloids, arsenic (As) and antimony (Sb), are examined here to determine what can be their help in the deciphering of past depositional conditions. The enrichment factors of the two elements are compared for a set of geological formations and marine deposits covering a relatively wide range of paleoenvironmental settings, from oxic to euxinic conditions. This work confirms that As and Sb are not robust paleoredox proxies but examining their relative enrichment may be useful. These preliminary results indicate that a co-enrichment of both elements with Sb being more enriched than As could be the mark of the so-called particulate shuttle effect. Notably, Sb would be more sensitive to Mn-shuttling than As. If confirmed, this trend could be used to further identify the cause of As-enrichment in marine sediments impacted by cold seepage fluids.

Copper (Cu) and nickel (Ni) are elements frequently enriched in sedimentary deposits rich in organic matter (OM). In the marine environment, they are mainly supplied to the sediments in association with sedimentary OM (organo-metal complexes). In modern environments, a good correlation between the intensity of phytoplankton productivity and the quantities of Cu and Ni transferred to sediments made it possible to establish paleo-productivity calculations based on the contents of ancient sediments in these two metals. The present study is a re-evaluation of the significance that can be attributed to these two metals as paleo-productivity proxies. The approach adopted here is based on the examination of a large database already available in the scientific literature. The choice was made to favor the examination of a large amount of data by simple means: comparisons of total organic carbon (TOC) content, enrichment in Cu and Ni (or even other trace metals), and value of the Fe:Al ratio that makes it possible to assess the availability of reactive iron. The basic idea is that the examination of a large number of geological formations makes it possible to encompass all kinds of paleo-environmental settings, thus comprising an extreme range of the factors conventionally involved in the mechanisms of accumulation of OM. The aim is to identify strong trends, valid in a large number of paleo-situations, which will have to be carefully taken into account in future detailed paleo-environmental reconstructions. It emerges from this study that, in many cases, Cu and Ni cannot be considered as faithfully reflecting the quantity of OM initially deposited. Several factors acting on the loss of Cu and Ni can be identified, among them, (1) a rapid loss linked to the decomposition of the OM before the conditions conducive to sulfate-reduction set in; (2) a low abundance of reactive iron which limits the quantity of pyrite liable to form, which significantly hampers Cu and Ni fixation in sediments. If Cu and Ni are not reliably retained in the sediments, that is, proportional to the quantity of OM supplied to the sediment, the paleo-environmental reconstitutions involving the concentrations of these metals may provide underestimated values of paleoproductivity. An interesting clue is the Fe:Al ratio that makes it possible to quickly know whether the values of the Cu and Ni enrichments are likely to be “abnormally” low.

The giant Jurassic-aged pockmark field of Beauvoisin developed in a 800 m wide depression for over 3.4 Ma during the Oxfordian; it formed below about 600 m water depth. It is composed of sub-sites organized in clusters and forming vertically stacked carbonate lenses encased in marls . This fine-scale study is focused on a detailed analysis of petrographical organization and geochemical signatures of crystals that grew up in early to late fractures of carbonate lenses, surrounding nodules, and tubes that fed them. The isotopic signature (C, O and Sr) shows that at least three different episodes of fluid migration participated to the mineralization processes. Most of the carbonates precipitated when biogenic seepage was active in the shallow subsurface during the Oxfordian. The second phase occurred relatively soon after burial during early Cretaceous and thermogenic fluids came probably from underlying Pliensbachian, Late Toarcian or Bajocian levels. The third phase is a bitumen-rich fluid probably related to these levels reaching the oil window during Mio-Pliocene. The fluids migrated through faults induced by the emplacement of Triassic-salt diapir of Propiac during the Late Jurassic and that remained polyphased drain structures over time.

The Tithonian-Berriasian interval in the southern part of the Neuquén Basin is represented by the Vaca Muerta and the Picún Leufú Formations. Facies analysis and correlation of the Vaca Muerta Formation and the lower part of the Picún Leufú Formation in the Picún Leufú Anticline allow us to characterize the evolution of successive facies belts representing siliciclastic shelf and mixed ramp environments. Shoreface and offshore facies are developed on the siliciclastic shelf in the western and southern parts of the Picún Leufú Anticline. The offshore transition domain is characterized by storm beds and slump features, whereas the offshore domain corresponds to black to grey shales and turbidites. The mixed siliciclastic-carbonate ramp is characterized by the development of a lagoon and high-energy shoal in the proximal part of the inner ramp, whereas the distal part comprises a tidal complex. The mid-ramp zone is characterized by storm influence and the outer ramp by fine-grained deposits. Two major transgressive-regressive sequences and five high-frequency transgressive-regressive sequences are recognized. The high-frequency transgressive-regressive sequences make up three progradational sequences, an aggradational-progradational sequence and an aggradational sequence. The geochemical characteristics and clay mineralogy of the Tithonian-Berriasian interval in the southern Neuquén Basin indicate that (1) climate played a key role in the evolution of the sedimentary environment, (2) a “normal marine” depositional environment with oxic sea water and sediment pore waters, rapidly changing to suboxic conditions at shallow depth below the seabed and (3) the occurrence of episodically restricted water-mass circulation at the onset of deposition of the Vaca Muerta Formation.
