Cables of cable-stayed bridges can experience rain–wind-induced vibrations (RWIV). This instability involves lower frequencies and higher amplitudes than classical vortex-induced vibrations. Furthermore, RWIV is restricted to a certain range of wind velocities, unlike linear 1 dof galloping. When flowing along the cables, the water gathers near the separation points to form one or two rivulets. Former studies which have described the coupling between the rivulets’ motion and the cable motion assume the existence of at least one rivulet. In this paper, we address the conditions for the formation of the rivulets. A two-dimensional model is developed within the lubrication theory, describing the evolution of a thin film subjected to gravity, surface tension, wind and motion of the cylinder. Numerical simulations show the appearance of the rivulets that are reputedly responsible for the instability. The position at which the rivulets appear is found to vary with the wind speed and the predictions of the model are in good agreement with new experimental data. r 2007 Elsevier Ltd. This research seeks to improve the understanding of the mechanisms accounting for the growth of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA), by quantifying the role that mechanical stimuli play in the disease processes. In recent years, the development of vascular diseases has been associated with the formation of disturbed patterns of wall shear stresses (WSS) and gradients of wall shear stresses (GWSS). They have been shown to affect the wall structural integrity, primarily via the changes induced on the morphology and functions of the endothelial cells (EC) and circulating blood cells. Particle Image Velocimetry measurements of the pulsatile blood flow have been performed in aneurysm models, while changing systematically their geometricparameters. The parametric study shows that the flow separates from the wall even at early stages of the disease (dilatation ≤ 50%). A large vortex ring forms in symmetric aneurysms, followed by internal shear layers. Two regions with distinct patterns of WSS have been identified: a region of flow detachment, with low oscillatory WSS, and a downstream region of flow reattachment, where large negative WSS and sustained GWSS are produced as a result of the impact of the vortex ring.The loss of symmetry in the models engenders a helical flow pattern due to the non-symmetric vortex shedding. The dominant vortex, whose strength increases with the asymmetry parameter, is shed from the most bulged wall (anterior). It results in the formation of a large recirculating region, where ECs are subjected to quasi-steady reversed WSS of low magnitude, while the posterior wall is exposed to quasi-healthy WSS. GWSS are generated at the necks and around the point of impact of the vortex.Lagrangian tracking of blood cells inside the different models of aneurysms shows a dramatic increase in the cell residence time as the aneurysm grows. While recirculating, cells experience high shear stresses close to the walls and inside the shear layers, which may lead to cell activation. The vortical structure of the flow also convects the cells towards the wall, increasing the probability for cell deposition and ipso facto for the formation of an intraluminal thrombus., Cette étude a pour but d'améliorer la compréhension des mécanismes responsables de la croissance des anévrismes aortiques abdominaux (AAA) et plus particulièrement de quantifier les effets des stimuli mécaniques sur la maladie. Des études récentes ont associé la plupart des maladies cardiovasculaires à des changements des contraintes pariétales et de leurs gradients. Toute modification des contraintes hémodynamiques influe l'intégrité structurelle de la paroi, à cause des changements induits sur la morphologie et les fonctions des cellules endothéliales et des cellules sanguines en circulation. Des mesures PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) de l'écoulement pulsé ont été réalisées dans des modèles d'anévrismes, dont les paramètres géométriques ont été changés systématiquement. Les résultats de l'étude paramétrique montrent que l'écoulement décolle de la paroi même aux stades très précoces de la maladie (dilatation >= 30%). Un large anneau de vorticité est formé dans les modèles symétriques d'anévrismes, suivi de couches de mélange. Deux régions distinctes peuvent être identifiées : une zone de décollement caractérisée parde faibles contraintes oscillantes, et une région distale de réattachement, où de larges contraintes pariétales négatives et des gradients entretenus apparaissent en réponse à l'impact de l'anneau tourbillonnaire sur la paroi. La perte de symétrie des modèles engendre un écoulement hélicoïdal. Le tourbillon qui domine l'écoulement se détache de la paroi à la courbure maximale (paroi antérieure). Il conduit à la formation d'une zone de recirculation, où les cellules endothéliales sont soumises à des contraintes pariétales négatives et quasi-permanentes avec de très faibles amplitudes, alors que la paroi postérieure est exposée à des contraintes proches de celles d'une aorte saine. Des gradients de contraintes sont générés aux cous de l'anévrisme, ainsi qu'au point d'impact du tourbillon. Un suivi Lagrangien de cellules sanguines à l'intérieur des différents modèles d'anévrisme montre que l'élargissement de l'anévrisme conduit à une augmentation du temps de résidence des cellules. Lors de leur recirculation, les cellules sont périodiquement soumises à de larges contraintes près de laparoi et dans les couches de mélange, ce qui peut conduire à l'activation des cellules. La structure tourbillonnaire de l'écoulement convecte les cellules vers la paroi, ce qui augmente la probabilité de dépôt des cellules sur la paroi et par conséquent de formation d'un thrombus endoluminal.

International audience; We consider the motion of a finger of low-viscosity fluid as it propagates into a branching network of fluid-filled microchannels - a scenario that arises in many applications, such as microfluidics, biofluid mechanics (e.g. pulmonary airway reopening) and the flow in porous media. We perform experiments to investigate the behaviour of the finger as it reaches a single bifurcation and determine under what conditions the finger branches symmetrically. We find that if the daughter tubes have open ends, the finger branches asymmetrically and will therefore tend to reopen a single path through the branching network. Conversely, if the daughter tubes terminate in elastic chambers, which provide a lumped representation of the airway wall elasticity in the airway reopening problem, the branching is found to be symmetric for sufficiently small propagation speeds. A mathematical model is developed to explain the experimentally observed behaviour. © 2005 Cambridge University Press.

Wind fluctuations over plant canopies are governed by a mixing layer (or Kelvin-Helmholtz) type instability,linked to the inflection of the mean wind profile at the top of the canopy. Here the coupling between wind dynamics and the waving of crop canopies under wind is explored.A new experimental technique is developped for on-site measurements of the spatio-temporal motion of a crop canopy. The wind-induced motion of wheat or alfalfacanopies is video-recorded. An image correlation technique, based on PIV algorithms (Particle Image Velocimetry), then allows to derive the bi-dimensional spatio-temporal velocity field of the canopy surface. The coherent part of the motion is extracted by abi-orthogonal decomposition of the velocity field. It is shown that the corresponding space and timefeatures cannot be explained using predictions from the mixing layer analogy of wind above canopies, which is the most common model in this environment. We demonstrate that the plants dynamics, via their natural vibration frequency, plays an important role in the frequency and wavelength selection for the coherent motion of the canopy.A fully-coupled model, where wind fluctuations and canopy motion interact through a drag term, is then proposed. A linear stability analysis allows to emonstrate a lock-in mechanism, whereby the frequency of the instability deviates from the Kelvin-Helmholtz law and locks on the natural frequency of the plants. This finding is then compared to the experimental results from on-site measurements, and good agreement, in both frequency and wavelength of the propagating patterns observed on the canopy surface, is shown., Les fluctuations dominantes du vent au-dessus des couverts végétaux sont régies par une instabilité de type couche de mélange (ou Kelvin-Helmholtz), liée à l'inflexion du profil devent moyen au niveau du sommet du couvert. La thèse porte sur l'analyse du couplageentre la dynamique du vent et l'ondulation des cultures sous le vent.Une technique expérimentale innovante a été développée pour mesurer, sur site et de manière non-intrusive, le mouvement global d'une culture. Le mouvement d'un champ de blé ou de luzerne est filmé en présence de vent. Puis, par une analyse de corrélation entre images, fondée sur des algorithmes de PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry), on en déduit le champ de vitesse bi-dimensionnel spatio-temporel de la surface du couvert végétal. La partie cohérente du mouvement est ensuite extraite à l'aide d'une décomposition bi-orthogonale du champ de vitesse. On montre que les propriétés spatiales et temporelles correspondantes ne peuvent s'expliquer à l'aide du modèle de la couche de mélange du vent, qui constitue l'approche la plus courante dans ce contexte. En particulier, on démontre le rôle de la dynamique des plantes, à travers leur fréquence propre, dans la sélection de fréquence et de longueur d'onde du mouvement cohérent du couvert végétal.Un modèle couplé, dans lequel les fluctuations du vent et le mouvement du couvert végétal interagissent à travers un terme de traînée est ensuite proposé. Une analyse de stabilité linéaire permet de mettre en évidence un mécanisme d'accrochage, par lequel la fréquence de l'instabilité dévie de la loi de Kelvin-Helmholtz et s'accroche sur la fréquence propre des plantes. Ce résultat est ensuite comparé avec les donnnées expérimentales des mesures sur site, et un bon accord qualitatif et quantitatif est obtenu avec le comportement des longueurs d'onde et fréquences de l'ondulation des cultures.

The occurrence of self‐sustained synchronized oscillations in a family of hot axisymmetric jets is investigated in direct numerical simulations. With parameter settings close to those used in the experiments of Monkewitz, Bechert, Barsikow & Lehmann, 1 such synchronized states are found numerically to arise when the ambient‐to‐jet temperature ratio S falls below a critical value. At a Reynolds number Re = 3750, based on the jet radius, global oscillations of Strouhal number St 0.45 occur for S 0.6, which corresponds well to the ‘mode II’ state of Monkewitz et al. 1 The distinct ‘mode I’ oscillations of St 0.3 reported in the experiments 1 are assumed to correspond to the subharmonic of a synchronized state that is numerically observed only to arise at a higher Reynolds number Re = 7500. Both modes are compared to theoretical predictions pertaining to nonlinear global modes which may exist due to the presence of absolute instability, as well as to the subharmonic acoustic resonance model of Laufer & Monkewitz. 2 It is found that the synchronization of the ‘mode I’ state sets in at temperature ratios for which the entire flow is convectively unstable. A nonlinear global mode therefore cannot exist in these cases. The onset of the ‘mode II’ state occurs in the presence of an absolutely unstable flow region of finite streamwise extent; however, even near the global instability threshold, the ‘mode II’ frequency does not match the absolute frequency at the inlet, as should be expected from global mode theory. The subharmonic acoustic resonance model, 2 which assumes a feedback loop between the inlet and the station of vortex pairing, is found not to apply in any of the observed cases of self‐sustained synchronized oscillations.

One of the main characteristics of geophysical flows is the presence of stable stratification, i.e the presence of a vertical density gradient. Such flows are generally organized into thin horizontal layers. This PhD thesis investigates numerically, theoretically and experimentally the dynamics of a pair of co-rotating vertical vortices in a stratified fluid in order to understand the mechanism of formation of such layered structure. Such flow is of high interest because co-rotating vortex pairs play an important role in two-dimensional turbulence through the merging process which leads to the energy transfer from small to large scales. A three-dimensional instability has been discovered. It is similar to the zigzag instability observed on a pair of counter-rotating vortices in a stratified fluid and it decorrelates the vortex merging along the vertical. A numerical three-dimensional stability analysis has shown that the zigzag instability dominates for strong stratification whereas the elliptic instability dominates for weak stratification. The zigzag instability bends symmetrically the two vortices without significant internal deformation. It selects a wavelength proportional to Fh b, where Fh is the horizontal Froude number and b the separation distance between the vortices. Its growth rate is proportional to the strain rate. An asymptotic analysis has recovered these scaling laws and has shown that the zigzag instability comes from the coupling between vortex bending modes and the strain field that each vortex generates on the other. Experimental observations and Direct Numerical simulations have also shown that the vertical lengthscale selected by the instability agrees with the predictions.of the stability analyses. The non-linear effects do not slow down the instability development but tends to recorrelate the fluid within each layers and to expel vertical gradients in between these layers. In the final part, the effect of planetary rotation has been investigated. It is shown that the zigzag instability remains active with a growth rate independent of the Coriolis parameter. In the rapidly rotating regime (quasi-geostrophic), the zigzag instability is similar to the "tall-column" instability with the most unstable wavelength proportional to Fh b / Ro, where Ro is the Rossby number. This instability may therefore affect geophysical flows for a large range of parameters both in the oceans and the atmosphere., Une des caractéristiques les plus remarquables des fluides géophysiques est la présence de stratification, c'est-à dire d'un gradient vertical de densité, qui induit une structure en couches horizontales. Lindborg (1999) et Billant & Chomaz (2001) ont proposé que la dynamique au sein de ces couches est tridimensionnelle et non bidimensionnelle comme cela était supposé auparavant. Les derniers ont aussi proposé un mécanisme de sélection de l' épaisseur de ces couches : l'instabilité zigzag qu'ils ont observée dans le cas particulier d'une paire de tourbillons contra-rotatifs. Cependant, les paires de tourbillons contra-rotatifs sont rarement observées dans l'océan et l'atmosphère contrairement aux couples de tourbillons co-rotatifs. De plus, l'appariement de tourbillons co-rotatifs est le processus dominant en turbulence bidimensionnelle responsable du transfert d'énergie des petites vers les grandes échelles. Au cours de ma thèse, je me suis donc intéressée à la dynamique de tourbillons co-rotatifs verticaux dans un fluide stratifié. Une instabilité associée au même effet physique que l'instabilité zigzag a été découverte. Elle décorrèle verticalement l'appariement de ces tourbillons, suggérant que l' instabilité zigzag est générique et affecte tout écoulement stratifié constitué de plus d'un tourbillon. L'analyse numérique de stabilité linéaire a montré que cette instabilité consiste en un mode déplacement et sélectionne une échelle verticale proportionnelle à l' échelle de flottabilité définie comme Fb, où F est le nombre de Froude horizontal et b la distance entre les deux tourbillons. Son taux de croissance est proportionnel au champ d'étirement créé par un tourbillon sur son compagnon. L'origine physique de cette instabilité a été identifiée grâce à une étude asymptotique : elle provient du couplage entre le mode de déplacement d'un tourbillon et le champ d'étirement généré par l'autre tourbillon. Observations expérimentales et Simulations Numériques Directes montrent que les non-linéarités n'inhibent pas le développement de l'instabilité zigzag qui entraîne bien une décorrelation verticale de l'écoulement selon une échelle proportionnelle à l'échelle de flottabilité. Enfin, l'effet de la rotation de la Terre a été étudié et nous avons montré que l'instabilité Zigzag reste active en présence de la force de Coriolis. Son taux de croissance est indépendant du taux de rotation. En régime fortement tournant, on retrouve l'approximation quasi-géostrophique : l'instabilité zigzag est similaire à l'instabilité ''tall-column'' découverte par Dritschel & de la Torre Juàrez (1996) et la longueur d'onde la plus instable est proportionnelle à Fb/Ro, où Ro est le nombre de Rossby. Cette instabilité affecte donc les écoulements géophysiques sur une large gamme d' échelles aussi bien dans l'océan que dans l'atmosphère.

After a brief summary of experimental results focussed on plane Couette flow and contrasting the low-Reynolds numbers transition between laminar flow and the turbulent spot regime, with its high-Reynolds counterpart between homogeneous turbulence and turbulent stripes, we introduce a hierarchy of models from conceptual models designed to answer the most basic questions to semi-realistic models more adapted to the study of specific topics.
