Comparatively limited knowledge is known about the accumulation processes of tributyltin (TBT) and triphenyltin (TPT) in fish and aquatic plant in the freshwater environment, which has hindered a full understanding of their bioaccumulation potential and ecological risks. In the present study, sorption of TBT and TPT on dead biota of both carp and C. demersum from water via the batch equilibrium technique as well as uptake of them on live biota of both carp and C. demersum from water at a static and a dynamic kinetics tests were investigated, respectively. Both TBT and TPT exhibit a high affinity in carps and C. demersum. And C. demersum has a faster metabolism either for TBT or TPT than carp. The apparent uptake values (C bio  = 1904-8831 μg/kg) or bioconcentration factor (BCF = 3333-44000 L/kg) were one or two orders of magnitude higher than that of estimated by a simple sorption (405-472 μg/kg) or lipid model (74.5-149.6 μg/kg) for carp, indicating the uptake of TBT and TPT did not only depend on lipids but also oxygen ligands or macromolecules such as amino acids and proteins of the living organism. In contrast, the apparent C bio values (149.1-926.4 μg/kg) of both TBT and TPT were lower than that of estimated by sorption model (1341-1902 μg/kg) for C. demersum, which were due to the rapid metabolic rate of them, especially for TBT. Muscle and liver tissues of nine fish species were analyzed to assess butyltin and phenyltin contamination. The samples were collected from three basins located in the Southern Baltic Sea coastal zone that each represent different potential for organotin pollution. Maximum total concentrations of butyltin compounds (BTs) in the fish muscles and livers were 715 and 1132ng Sn g(-1) d.w., respectively, whereas triphenyltin (TPhT) was not detected. In the muscle samples, the predominant compound in the sum of butyltins was tributyltin (TBT), while in the liver samples, tributyltin degradation products were found in the majority. The results demonstrate that 6-7years after the implementation of the total ban on harmful organotin use in antifouling paints, butyltins remain present in fishes from the Polish coast of the Baltic Sea. In the present study, the antioxidant response and acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity were measured in Chinese rare minnow larvae (Gobiocypris rarus) after exposure to tributyltin (TBT) (0, 100, 400 and 800 ngL(-1)) for 7 days, as well as the expression of a series of genes, including cr, aptase and prl genes involved in the ion-regulatory process and igfbp3 and gh related to growth rate. Results shows that oxidative stress was generated in fish exposed to TBT, as evidenced by elevated malondialdehyde levels and the inhibition of antioxidant parameters. The activity of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) was also inhibited in fish under higher TBT stress. Moreover, genes involved in ion regulation and growth were affected, based on the regulated transcription of the cr, atpase, gh, prl and igfbp3 genes in the treated groups. The observed effects of TBT upon antioxidant responses and altered expression of genes provides insight into the use of these molecular biomarkers in evaluating mechanisms of TBT toxicity in fish.

The acute toxicity of organic tin compounds (OTCs) has been studied in detail. However, due to their complex nature, very little is known about species-specific methods of accumulation and consequences for food-webs. Chironomids, on which e.g. Daubenton's bats feed, may act as vectors for the transport of organic tin compounds from aquatic to terrestrial ecosystems. Bats are prone to environmental toxins because of their longevity and their ecological role as top predators. Organic tin compounds are associated with increased formation of reactive oxygen species and associated oxidative damage as well as suppression of immune function. The present paper investigates whether the OTC, tributyltin (TBT) and its metabolite, dibutyltin (DBT), accumulate in natural populations of Daubenton's bats and whether TBT-associated effects are seen in general body condition, redox balance, redox enzyme activities, associated oxidative damage of red blood cells and complement function. We discovered the concentration of bat fur DBT correlated with local marine sediment TBT concentrations. However, we did not find a correlation between the explanatory factors, bat fur DBT and marine sediment TBT concentrations, and several physiological and physical response variables apart from complement activity. Higher DBT concentrations resulted in weaker complement activity and thus a weaker immune response. Although the observed physiological effects in the present study were not strongly correlated to butyltin concentrations in fur or sediment, the result is unique for natural populations so far and raises interesting questions for future ecotoxicological studies., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Inc. We investigated the temporal trend in contamination of butyltin compounds (BTs) along the Korean coast using imposex and tributyltin (TBT) burden in gastropods (Thais clavigera) as a biomonitor. Thais clavigera were collected from 26 locations with different shipping activities between 2004 and 2009 after restrictions on TBT-based antifouling paints were imposed in Korea. In the present study, imposex indices and TBT tissue concentrations significantly decreased over time from 2004 to 2009, confirming the effectiveness of TBT regulation. However, imposex in 2009 samples was still found. Significantly high imposex indices and TBT tissue residues were found in large ports containing commercial and ferry services compared with small ports and background areas. Imposex indices in background areas had decreased to zero, suggesting recovery from imposex caused by BT contamination. These results suggest that recovery from TBT contamination occurs faster in areas with very low maritime activities than areas with high maritime activities.

Concentrations of tributyltin (TBT) and its breakdown products, dibutyltin (DBT) and monobutyltin (MTB), were measured in tissues of male turbot Scophthalmus maximus from the Gulf of Gdańsk (GDA) and the Pomeranian Bay (POM) in the southern Baltic Sea. The fish (n=206) were collected during the spawning seasons of 2008-2009. All specimens were at the same maturity stage and in full breeding condition. The ripe testes of the turbot appeared to be a target tissue for TBT accumulation. We report that TBT is extensively eliminated at the specific whole-body level and that the males from TBT-contaminated location (GDA) reach this specific level at 23-24 cm in total length., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. Butyltins (BTs), such as tributyltin (TBT) and dibutyltin (DBT), are toxic to aquatic organisms, but the presence of the strong adsorbent, black carbon (BC), can markedly influence BT toxicity and uptake in organisms. In the present study, the acute toxicity and uptake of TBT and DBT in the crustacean, Daphnia magna, were investigated with and without addition of nano-charcoal at different pHs and water hardnesses. The results showed that the toxicity of TBT and DBT increased by lowering the pH from 8 to 6. This reflects a relatively higher toxicity of cationic BT species than of the neutral species. At pH 6, by enhancing the water hardness of the media from 0.6 to 2.5 mM, the toxicity of TBT and DBT consistently decreased due to competitive binding of bivalent cations (Mg²⁺, Ca²⁺) to biotic ligands of D. magna. Furthermore, the toxicity of TBT to D. magna significantly decreased in the presence of nano-charcoal compared with experiments without nano-charcoal at pH 6 and 8, while no significant decrease in toxicity of DBT was observed in the presence of nano-charcoal. This can be attributed to the insignificant decrease of free DBT concentration in the presence of nano-charcoal compared with that for TBT. Conversely, it was observed that more TBT and DBT were taken up in D. magna in the presence of nano-charcoal due to the uptake of TBT or DBT associated with nano-charcoal by Daphnia in gut systems, as seen by light microscopy. Acute intoxication by tributyltin compounds has been known to induce olfactory disturbances, although the underlying mechanism remains unclear. This study investigates the acute effect of tributyltin chloride (TBTC) on the olfactory bulb in rats. The time-course characteristics of the intra-olfactory concentration of TBTC, the histopathological changes of the olfactory bulb and the olfactory function were examined for 96 h after a single intraperitoneal injection of 2.5 mg/kg of TBTC. The olfactory function was evaluated by the discriminating ability for a cycloheximide solution which has an unpleasant odor for rats. The concentration of TBTC in the olfactory bulb, which was measured using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, quickly increased to a peak value within 24 h and then decreased. The viable cell number significantly decreased after the TBTC administration in the mitral cell layer and granule cell layer of the olfactory bulb, while apoptotic cells significantly increased in these areas at the same time. Hyposmia was evident 96 h after the TBTC injection, although olfactory testing could not been performed until that time because of anorexia. These results suggest that intraperitoneally injected TBTC was promptly transferred to the olfactory bulb through the blood-brain barrier, induced apoptosis of the cells in the olfactory bulb and finally elicited the olfactory disturbance., (Copyright © 2010 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Worldwide measures to restrict tributyltin (TBT) in antifouling paints have been legislated for decades, and were upgraded to a total ban on September 2008. With a view to test the response of coastal biota to changing pollution, since 1996 we have determined the concentration of TBT and derivatives di- and mono-butyltin (DBT and MBT) in NW Spain populations of two gastropods of contrasting biology, the rock-snail Nucella lapillus (n=18) and the mud-snail Nassarius reticulatus (n=24). TBT pollution in the study area has decreased consistently and considerably over time. In addition, the baseline butyltin (BT) bioaccumulation patterns showed a marked but transient distortion. These field observations are consistent with BT desorption from sediments, a natural phenomenon that is now to be expected in developing countries recently subject to the global TBT ban.

Occurrence and distribution of 6 organotin compounds including butyltin and phenyltin species were detected in Thais clavigera which were collected from 9 coastal areas sites around Xiamen Coast, by pentylized derivatization, GC-FPD. Results indicated that all Thais clavigera samples were contaminated with organotin compounds. The concentrations in Thais clavigera soft bodies varied from 0.3 to 70.6 ng x g(-1) with a mean value of 28.8 ng x g(-1) for butyltin compounds, and from nd to 18.8 ng x g(-1) with a mean value of 7.9 ng x g(-1) for phenyltin compounds, respectively. MBT and TPhT were high levels in butyltin compounds and phentyltin compounds, respectively. In addition, butyltin compounds were the dominant contaminates in all samples with high percentage from 74.3% to 96.8%. There was a significant correlation between TBT and TPhT (R2=0.7109, p<0.01). This result showed that both TBT and TPhT came from antifouling paints for ships or for mariculture nets. Compared with those data reported from the other regions around southeast coast of China, present study reveals that contaminated level of organotin compounds in Thais clavigera are relatively lower in Xiamen Coast. But it is higher than those in 2002.

Surface sediment samples were analyzed for organotins namely tributyltin (TBT), dibutyltin and monobutyltin from six areas located in the Gulf of Cádiz (14 stations), Spain. The total butyltin ranged between undetected and 1,580 ng Sn g(-1). TBT generally prevailed in most of the samples, suggesting fresh inputs of butyltin compounds and/or less degradation of TBT. The observed levels of butyltins at several sites are much higher than that required to induce toxic effect on marine organisms, suggesting that these sediments are polluted with butyltin compounds. The clam Ruditapes philippinarum was used for studying bioaccumulation of butyltins by exposing them to contaminated sediments from the Gulf of Cádiz over a period of 28 days under laboratory conditions. Biota-sediment accumulation factor (BSAF) ranged from 0.44 to 3.99.

Acute toxic responses as well as uptake and depuration rates for tributyltin (TBT) and dibutyltin (DBT) were examined in the small planktonic shrimp, Acetes intermedius. The 72-h LC(50) values of TBT and DBT for the shrimp were found to be 18.6 and 82.6 microg L(-1) as tin. The uptake rate constants of TBT and DBT in the shrimp were 0.0006 and 0.0002 L g(-1) h(-1), and the corresponding depuration rate constants were 0.0303 and 0.0106 h(-1), respectively. It appears that real-time ambient TBT pollution status can be more closely reflected in this species. The shrimp may serve as a biomonitor to indicate short-term fluctuations in ambient TBT pollution. A field survey was also conducted to distinguish contrasts in butyltin accumulation under different ambient conditions. These observations provide valuable information for the evaluation of TBT pollution status in the environment using A. intermedius as a biomonitor.

An estimate of the digestibility and assimilability of butyltins occurring in contaminated wines (Port, red and white) was obtained by means of in vitro studies of gastrointestinal digestion. The influence of the wine matrix on the intestinal permeability was explored by studying the accumulation of butyltins in Caco-2 monolayers either when these species are dissolved in buffer only or in the dialysates of digested wines. Some important information about the fate of the butyltin compounds ingested from contaminated wines could be achieved. Only a very small fraction of the ingested DBT and TBT, the two most toxic forms, appear to be able to reach the epithelium as judged by the small dialyzable fraction found (<2%). This is probably independent from the food/drink matrix introducing these contaminants, since the influence of the involved enzymes appear to be dominant, especially for DBT and TBT. Additionally, the intestinal permeability of the three butyltins was also very low, the wine matrix possibly having a hindrance effect in a few cases.

The isolate, Pesudoalteromonas sp. TBT1, could grow to overcome the toxicity of tributyltin chloride (TBTCl) up to 30 microM in the absence of Cl(-) in the medium until the cells reached an exponential phase of growth. The viability, however, was reduced after the cells reached a stationary phase. The degradation products, such as dibutyltin (DBT) and monobutyltin (MBT), were not detected in the growth medium, indicating that the isolate has no ability to degrade TBT into less toxic DBT and MBT. Up to about 10(7.5) TBT molecules were adsorbed by a single cell. The observation of morphological changes with an electron microscope showed that the cell surface became wrinkled after exposure to the lethal concentration of 10 mM TBTCl. These results indicate that the resistance of the isolate toward the toxicity of TBTCl is not related to the unique cell surface, which seems to play an important role in preventing the diffusion of TBTCl into the cytoplasm.

We examined the effects of tributyltin (TBT) on aerobic and anaerobic energy metabolism of pen shell (Atrina pectinata japonica). We exposed pen shells to TBT at nominal concentrations of 0 (control) and 1.0microg/l for 72h under aerobic condition. At the end of the exposure, half of the pen shells in each treatment were wrapped in plastic wrap to simulate exposure to hypoxia and held at 25 degrees C for another 12h. The concentrations of the products of energy metabolism, namely lactate, pyruvate, fumarate and succinate, in adductor muscle were measured. The exposure to TBT under aerobic condition significantly elevated lactate, pyruvate and fumarate concentrations (p<0.001). After subsequent exposure to anaerobic condition, the mean concentration of succinate in the TBT treatment group was 64% of that in the control group, but there were no significant differences. Our results suggest that the energy metabolism of pen shell is disrupted by exposure to TBT.

Objective: The objective of this study is to provide basic information on the metabolic fate of five trialkyltins, namely, trimethyltin, triethyltin, tripropyltin, tributyltin, and trioctyltin, in rats., Methods: The levels of trialkyltin and its metabolites in the liver, kidneys, brain, and blood of rats and mice were determined 24h after single oral treatment with trimethyltin, triethyltin, tripropyltin, tributyltin, and trioctyltin by gas chromatography. The doses (as tin) of the trialkyltin compounds were 2.98 mg/kg for trimethyltin and triethyltin, 18.23 mg/kg for tripropyltin and tributyltin and 24.09 mg/kg for trioctyltin., Results: For the trimethyltin and triethyltin treatments, no metabolites of either trialkyltin accumulated in the organs, except for the kidney in the triethyltin treatment. The levels of trimethyltin and triethyltin in the blood of the rats were markedly higher than those of the mice. For the tripropyltin and tributyltin treatments, the predominant metabolites in the liver and kidneys were found to be dialkyltins. Furthermore, despite the higher dose, the level of total tin in the organs 24 h after treatment with trioctyltin were markedly lower than those of the other trialkyltins tested., Conclusion: There are clear differences in the metabolic fates of the tin metabolites of the five trialkyItins studied. These results should be considered when carrying out toxicological research on trialkyltins.

Tributyltin oxide (TBTO) is the main constituent of tin-based antifouling marine paint used on the hulls of ships to prevent the growth of fouling organisms. TBTO was shown to be hazardous to nontarget organisms. The stingray, Urolophus jamaicensis, may represent the ideal study organism for the adverse effects of TBTO to elasmobranches. This study investigated the toxicity and accumulation of tin in the gill tissue of the stingray U. jamaicensis after acute exposure to TBTO. This work demonstrates the alterations in the morphological architecture of the gill using electron and light microscopy, the induction of stress proteins, and peroxidative damage in response to tributyltin (TBT) exposure. A captured population of U. jamaicencis was housed in isolated, static tank systems. After a minimum 30-d acclimation period, the animals were exposed to one of 5 experimental doses of TBTO (4 microg/L, 2 microg/L, 1 microg/L, 0.5 microg/L, or 0.05 microg/L). A sixth group served as a control population. At 3h following treatment, animals were sacrificed and gill tissue was extracted, processed, and stored for analysis. Results indicate that U. jamaicensis is hypersensitive to TBT exposure. The elasmobranch gill showed a distorted, swollen epithelium with exfoliation following acute exposure to as little as 0.05 microg/L TBTO for 3 h. Graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy (GFAAS) results indicate that tissues of treated animals contained a significantly increased tin concentration as compared to controls. Western blot analysis demonstrated the induction of the stress proteins Hsp 70 and HO1. 4-Hydroxynonenol (4HNE) adduct formation determined by Western blot analysis provides further evidence that observed membrane degradation is a result of lipid peroxidation.

The bioaccumulation model OMEGA (optimal modelling for ecotoxicological applications) is used to explore accumulation of organotins in the Western Scheldt food chain, consisting of herbi-detritivores, primary and secondary carnivorous fish and a piscivorous bird. Organotins studied are tributyltin (TBT) and triphenyltin (TPT) and the respective di- and mono-organotin metabolites. Empirical elimination rate constants are compared to model predictions for organic substances and metals. It is found that field bioaccumulation ratios are higher than predicted based on elimination kinetics relevant for organic compounds. The results indicate that uptake of organotins mainly occurs via hydrophobic mechanisms, whereas elimination may occur via metal-like kinetics. This results in very low elimination rates, which are comparable to model predictions for metals.

There is a growing body of evidence that indicates common environmental pollutants are capable of disrupting reproductive and developmental processes by interfering with the actions of endogenous hormones. Many reports of endocrine disruption describe changes in the normal development of organs and tissues that are consistent with genetic damage, and recent studies confirm that many chemicals classified to have hormone-modulating effects also possess carcinogenic and mutagenic potential. To date, however, there have been no conclusive examples linking genetic damage with perturbation of endocrine function and adverse effects in vivo. Here, we provide the first evidence of DNA damage associated with the development of imposex (the masculinization of female gastropods considered to be the result of alterations to endocrine-mediated pathways) in the dog-whelk Nucella lapillus. Animals (n = 257) that displayed various stages of tributyltin (TBT) -induced imposex were collected from sites in southwest England, and their imposex status was determined by physical examination. Linear regression analysis revealed a very strong relationship (correlation coefficient of 0.935, p < 0.0001) between the degree of imposex and the extent of DNA damage (micronucleus formation) in hemocytes. Moreover, histological examination of a larger number of dog-whelks collected from sites throughout Europe confirmed the presence of hyperplastic growths, primarily on the vas deferens and penis in both TBT-exposed male snails and in females that exhibited imposex. A strong association was found between TBT body burden and the prevalence of abnormal growths, thereby providing compelling evidence to support the hypothesis that environmental chemicals that affect reproductive processes do so partly through DNA damage pathways.

We histopathologically examined gonads and chemically determined organotin compounds in tissues of the ivory shell, Babylonia japonica. Imposex (a superimposition of male-type genital organs on females) occurred in approximately 80-90% of B. japonica specimens that we examined, with the penis and vas deferens both well developed. No oviduct blockage by vas deferens formation was observed. Ovarian spermatogenesis and suppressed ovarian maturation were observed in the females that exhibited imposex, although no histopathological abnormalities were found in males. Tissue distributions of organotin compounds [tributyltin (TBT), triphenyltin (TPhT), and their metabolites] were different for butyltins and phenyltins; a remarkably high accumulation of TBT was observed in the ctenidium, osphradium, and heart, whereas high concentrations of TPhT were detected in the ovary and digestive gland. More than one-third of TBT accumulated in the digestive glands of both males and females, followed by the testis, ctenidium, muscle, and heart tissues in males and in the muscle, ovary, ctenidium, and head tissues (including the central nervous system ganglia) in females. In both males and females, more than half of total TPhT accumulated in the digestive glands, followed by the gonads. The next highest values were in the muscle, ctenidium, and heart tissues in males and in the muscle, oviduct, and head tissues in females. Both TBT and TPhT concentrations in the gonads were positively correlated with penis length in females. Our findings strongly suggest that reproductive failure in adult females accompanied by imposex, possibly induced by TBT and TPhT from antifouling paints, may have caused the marked decline of B. japonica populations in Japan.

Tributyltin is metabolized by cytochrome P-450 (CYP) system enzymes, and its metabolic fate may contribute to the toxicity of the chemical. In the present study, it is examined whether sex differences in the metabolism of tributyltin exist in rats. In addition, the in vivo and in vitro metabolism of tributyltin was investigated using rat hepatic CYP systems to confirm the principal CYP involved. A significant sex difference in metabolism occurred both in vivo and in vitro, suggesting that one of the CYPs responsible for tributyltin metabolism in rats is male specific or predominant at least. Eight cDNA-expressed rat CYPs, including typical phenobarbital (PB)-inducible forms and members of the CYP2C subfamily, were tested to determine their capability for tributyltin metabolism. Among the enzymes studied, a statistically significant dealkylation of tributyltin was mediated by CYP2C6 and 2C11. Furthermore, the sex difference in metabolism disappeared in vitro after anti-rat CYP2C11 antibody pretreatment because CYP2C11 is a major male-specific form in rats. These results indicate that CYP2C6 is the principal CYP for tributyltin metabolism in female rats, whereas CYP2C11 as well as 2C6 is involved in tributyltin metabolism in male rats, and it is suggested that CYP2C11 is responsible for the significant sex difference in the metabolism of tributyltin observed in rats.

The present study was undertaken to evaluate the toxicity of tributyltin (TBT) on oysters (Crassostrea gigas) and bioaccumulation of TBT and triphenyltin (TPhT) on oysters and rock shells (Thais clavigera) from mariculture areas of Taiwan. When treated with concentrations of 0.08, 0.40, 2.00, 10.00 and 50.00 microg TBT/L, the 48-, 72-, 96- and 120-h LC50s of oysters were 44.6, 18.4, 17.9 and 14.3 microg TBT/L, respectively. In the bioaccumulation experiments, oysters and rock shells were exposed to various concentrations of organotins, i.e. A: control, B: 0.40 microg TBT/L, C: 0.40 microg TPhT/L, and D: 0.20 microg TBT/L + 0.20 microg TPhT/L. In general, TPhT was faster accumulated than TBT in both oysters and rock shells and oysters had a higher elimination capability than rock shells. Additionally, greater bioaccumulation and elimination rates had been observed in female oysters than males. To rock shells, the bioaccumulation rate of organotins in imposex females was greater than males and females.

Concentrations and composition of butyltin (BT) and phenyltin (PT) compounds were compared in tissues of mussels Mytilus edulis and clams Mya arenaria collected from the Mersey Estuary. Tributyltin (TBT) concentrations were consistently highest in digestive gland and low in muscular tissues such as siphons (Mya) and adductor muscle (Mytilus). Lowest concentrations were found in the periostracum surrounding the siphons of Mya. Ratios of monobutyltin (MBT), dibutyltin (DBT) and TBT to total BT content of Mytilus tissues were in the ranges 25-34%, 21-28% and 44-51%, respectively. Much higher proportions of TBT:total BT were characteristic of Mya (>80% in the digestive gland, remaining tissue and gonad) implying that slow degradation rates account for the relatively high levels of TBT in this species. TPT was the only phenyltin compound detected (albeit at relatively low levels), and, like TBT, was present in highest concentrations in the digestive gland of clams--suggesting an important dietary component in the accumulation of OTs in these bivalves.

Biofilm, fish, oyster, mussel, clam, surface seawater, suspended particulate matter (SPM), and sediment samples were collected from marine and/or estuarine waters of the west coast of India. These samples were analysed for butyltin derivatives such as dibutyltin (DBT) and tributyltin (TBT). The concentrations DBT plus TBT varied between 2.4 and 8.3, 163 and 363 ng/l, 5 and 2853 ng/g dry wt in the SPM, seawater and sediment samples, respectively, of the Marmugao harbour. The values of DBT plus TBT ranged between 0.60 and 29, 123 and 242 ng/l and 1.4 and 65 ng/g dry wt in SPM, water and sediment samples, respectively, collected from the Mandovi estuary. In the Dona Paula Bay the DBT plus TBT varied from 10 to 89 ng/l in surface seawater, and TBT from 10 to 513 ng/g in biofilm samples. For the coastal sediment samples the concentration of DBT plus TBT ranged between 36 and 133 ng/g dry wt of sediment. For the animal samples the DBT plus TBT ranged between 58 and 825 ng/g dry wt of the tissue. Mussel tissues contained the highest amount of DBT plus TBT (825 ng/g dry wt tissue), whereas highest TBT concentration was recorded in the oyster (732 ng/g dry wt). TBT was generally the most abundant butyltin compound in most of the samples suggesting fresh inputs and/or less degradation of TBT. A wide range of the observed butyltin concentrations suggests the presence of localized areas of contamination. Leaching of tributyltin-containing antifouling paints from the ocean going ships, fishing and recreational boats, barges, and the inputs of TBT from the Goa shipyard and dry dock facility situated in the harbour are the probable sources of the DBT and TBT in the samples of the west coast of India. Higher levels of TBT were observed in biofilm relative to that in the surrounding seawater. When fed on TBT contaminated biofilm of the diatom Navicula subinflata, butyltin concentrations in the clam Paphia malabarica increased over the period of feeding suggesting the importance of biofilm in the transfer of butyltins to higher group of organisms.

The effects of tributyltin (TBT) on the seagrass Ruppia maritima were studied in two growth experiments. Plants were sampled at stations in Odense Fjord and Lunkebugten, Denmark, and replanted in reference sediment without TBT, reference sediment spiked with TBT, and in impacted sediment sampled in the highly TBT contaminated (7-57 microg kg (-1) dw) Odense Fjord. Plant performance was studied at weekly intervals for 3-4 weeks, by measuring net photosynthetic activity, respiration, relative growth rate (RGR) and number of leaves. Net photosynthetic activity in plants from spiked and impacted sediment was reduced by up to 60% relative to reference plants. Respiration both increased and decreased in response to TBT exposure, while RGR was generally lower in plants from contaminated sediments (reduced by 8-25%). The effects of spiked and impacted sediment differed between the experiments, which could be partly explained by the bioavailability of TBT in the two treatments, but also by adaptation of the plants from Odense Fjord to TBT. Measurements of enhanced TBT concentrations in the sediments in Odense Fjord suggest an impact of TBT on R. maritima is possible under in situ conditions.

Imposex in the gastropod Hinia reticulata, a bioindicator for tributyltin (TBT) contamination, was investigated in locations at different distances from the Oporto harbour-dredged material discharge site. The degree of imposex found was inversely related to the distance to the discharge site, the highest imposex frequency being found closest to the discharge area. However, the levels of imposex found were low when compared with those reported for H. reticulata populations from moderately TBT-contaminated areas. Despite detectable levels of dibutyltin (DBT) and monobutyltin (MBT) in snail tissues (total butyltins ranging from 84 to 410 ng/g Sn dry wt.), TBT was below detection limit in all snail samples collected in open sea.

The purpose of this study was to address four aspects of the kinetics of tributyltin (TBT) in the freshwater amphipod Hyalella azteca: time to steady state, route of uptake, depuration rates, and effect of gut clearance. The amphipods accumulated TBT rapidly, reaching steady state within 14 d. Body concentrations were similar between caged and sediment-exposed animals, indicating that the primary route of uptake is via dissolved TBT. However, the rate of uptake was significantly higher in sediment-exposed amphipods. During depuration, body concentrations of TBT exhibited a biphasic decline, with a stronger decrease over the first 24 h that is attributed primarily to gut clearance, followed by a more gradual decrease most likely due to excretion from the body. Gut contents contributed significantly to body concentrations of TBT, accounting for 30% of the initial total body burden in sediment-exposed amphipods. Half-lives of TBT in gut-cleared H. azteca were 8 d and 14 d for amphipods exposed to spiked water and spiked sediment, respectively. The results of this study have significant implications in the experimental design and interpretation of studies involving the effects of TBT in H. azteca.

Background: Organotins have been used world-wide as antifoulants in ship paints. Repeatedly, severe effects on aquatic species have resulted. The use of organotins for this purpose was ruled out, and dumping of contaminated harbor sludge into the sea was prohibited. Land-based dumping is seen as an alternative., Objective: This study investigates sorption, uptake and translocation of tributyltin (TBT) to willow trees in order to evaluate phytoremediation as treatment option. The study considers the influence of pH on the plant uptake of organotins. EXPERIMENTAL SET-UP: Chemicals investigated were the weak base tributyltin chloride (TBTCl) and the neutral tributyltin hydride (TBTH). Organotins were extracted from solution and plant material with toluene, and analyzed as tin by AAS with graphite oven. The pH in solution varied from pH 4 to pH 7. The sorption to living and dead roots, stems and leaves was measured in shaking experiments. The uptake into intact trees was measured at nominal levels of 1 and 10 mg TBT/l for TBTH and TBTCl at low and high pH., Results: The sorption to roots and leaves dropped for dead tissue, but did not vary much with pH. The sorption to stems increased for dead stems and with pH. The solubility of TBTCl in water was below 10 mg/l and lowest at pH 4. Concentrations of TBTCl and TBTH in solutions with trees dropped rapidly to low values. Highest TBT contents in trees were found in roots and lower stems. The concentrations followed the concentrations in solution. The pH had only a small effect on the plant uptake of TBTCl, and no effect on the uptake of TBTH. No effective translocation to higher stems or leaves was found., Discussion: An ion trap mechanism that accumulates the weak base TBTCl in the xylem sap of plants and leads to upward translocation could not be detected. Neither TBTCl at low or high pH, nor the neutral lipophilic chemical TBTH, were translocated effectively to leaves. The TBT+ cation sorbed strongly to plant tissue. The exact mechanism for the strong sorption of the cation is unknown, but similar effects have been observed for algae, liposomes and isolated biomembranes., Conclusions: Both the uptake of the neutral TBTH and the uptake of the neutral molecule form of TBTCl into willows was as is to be expected from theory. The cation TBT+ showed an unexpected behavior which has been observed before. No ion trap occurs, and the phytoextraction of TBT is not feasible., Outlook: Planting trees, or other appropriate vegetation, could have a beneficial remediation effect by aeration of the TBT-contaminated soil or sludge. In a follow-up paper, the toxicity of TBT to willow trees will be described.

The distribution of tributyltin (TBT) and its metabolites, dibutyltin (DBT) and monobutyltin (MBT), was examined in the liver, brain and fat tissues in a two-generation reproductive toxicity study of tributyltin chloride (TBTCl) in rats using dietary supplementation at concentrations of 5, 25 and 125 ppm. In the liver, irrespective of TBTCl dietary concentration, gender or generation, the highest concentration of metabolite was consistently MBT, followed by DBT, and then TBT. In contrast, TBT was consistently present at the highest concentration in the brain, nearly always followed by DBT and MBT. In fat tissues, the concentrations of the three butyltin compounds showed similar relationships to those observed in the brain, although the concentrations were much lower. In the liver, the concentration of TBT was higher in females, and those of DBT and MBT were higher in males. Factorial ANOVA also suggested the effect of gender on the concentrations of the three butyltin compounds in the liver. The results of this study suggest tissue-dependent distribution of TBT, DBT and MBT and gender-dependent distribution of the three metabolites in the liver of rats.

Blue mussels, Mytilus edulis, were exposed to two different concentrations of tributyltin (TBT) in seawater, 1,000 ng Sn/L (C1 experiment) and 10 ng Sn/L (C2 experiment), for 4 d, in order to evaluate the bioaccumulation of TBT by mussels Mytilus edulis in microcosms and to test the ability of a multimarkers analysis to determine the effects of TBT on the biochemical parameters in mussels. Tissue burdens of Mytilus edulis were 204 +/- 7 and 2,120 +/- 4 ng Sn/g TBT after the 4-d tests for the C2 and C1 experiments, respectively. Analyses of dissected organs and/or tissues demonstrated that TBT accumulated to the greatest extent in gills in the C1 experiment and in the digestive gland in the C2 experiment. Bioconcentration factors (BCFs) were 12,100 +/- 300 and 2,000 +/- 10 for mussels exposed in the C2 and C1 experiments, respectively. The four biomarkers used in this work were acetylcholinesterase (AChE), glutathione S-transferase (GST), catalase (CAT) activities, and thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) contents. No significant changes were observed in the measured enzyme activities or in TBARS concentration after the 4-d TBT exposure.

We have previously reported that short-term, single exposure to a high dose of tributyltin (TBT), a widely used antifouling biocide, inhibited both the in vivo metabolism and metabolic activation of the carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) in fish; (BaP), in turn, stimulated TBT metabolism. Here, we provide further mechanistic evidence of mutual metabolic interactions between BaP and TBT in response to long-term, repeated exposures to low doses. Juvenile Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) received 10 separate i.p. injections (a single injection every 6 days) of BaP (3 mg/kg), TBT (0.3 mg/kg), or both in combination; control fish received corn oil vehicle only. Two days after the 2nd (Day 8), 6th (Day 32), and 10th dose (Day 56), blood, bile, and liver samples were collected and analyzed for a suite of biomarkers. HPLC/fluorescence analysis indicated that TBT cotreatment inhibited the formation of (+)-anti-BaP diol-epoxide adducts with plasma albumin (53%, Day 8), hepatic DNA (27%, Day 32), or both albumin and globin (50 and 58%, Day 56) compared to BaP alone. This antagonistic interaction was associated with a time-dependent modulation (inhibition at Day 8, enhancement at Day 32) of both cytochrome P450 (P450)1A-mediated ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD) activity and biliary BaP metabolite formation. TBT cotreatment also inhibited (39%) the BaP-mediated induction of hepatic glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity observed at Day 8. Treatment with TBT alone increased EROD activity (60%) at Day 32, but decreased both GST activity (70 and 37%) and glutathione content (24% and 16%) at Days 32 and 56, respectively. GC/MS analysis revealed that, at Day 56, BaP cotreatment increased (200%) the levels of biliary butyltin compounds, including mono- and dibutyltin metabolites. This potentiative interaction was associated with a protective effect of BaP cotreatment against the TBT-mediated decreases in GST activity and glutathione content. The current results demonstrate that, whereas TBT inhibited BaP bioactivation via a time-dependent modulation of P4501A induction, BaP stimulated the Phase II metabolism of TBT and/or its biliary excretion. The mutual metabolic interactions between these two widespread aquatic pollutants reinforce the need for long-term in vivo interactive studies at low doses.

Nassarius kraussianus populations in the Durban and Richards Bay harbours (along the eastern seaboard of southern Africa) and in the Knysna lagoon (southern Cape coast) showed imposex development, confirming bioavailability of tributyltin (TBT) in these waterways. Incidence of imposex (which ranged from 29% to 100%) and relative penis length of females (RPL; which ranged from 1.3% to 55.2%) were markedly variable among populations from different sites in each waterway, indicative of localised effects of TBT contamination. Shell length of the snails was apparently not correlated with contamination level, as assessed from imposex measurements. While population imposex features are easy to determine and often provide a sensitive biomarker of TBT exposure, the discussion outlines reservations when extrapolating these to general ecological situations. Additionally, this study represents the first published report on the topic for sub-Saharan, African harbours, some of which seem remarkably less affected than suggested for other world regions.

Tributyltin, an organotin, is ubiquitous in the environment. The consumption of contaminated marine species leads to human dietary exposure to this compound. Tributyltin is an endocrine disruptor in many wildlife species and inhibits aromatase in mammalian placental and granulosa-like tumor cell lines. We investigated the effects of tributyltin chloride exposure on pregnancy outcome in the Sprague-Dawley rat. Timed pregnant rats were gavaged either with vehicle (olive oil) or tributyltin chloride (0.25, 2.5, 10, or 20 mg/kg) from days 0-19 or 8-19 of gestation. On gestational day 20, dams were sacrificed, and pregnancy outcome was determined. Tributyltin and its metabolites (dibutyltin, monobutyltin) were measured in maternal blood by gas chromatography. Both tributyltin and dibutyltin were present in maternal blood at approximately equal concentrations, whereas monobutyltin contributed minimally to total organotins. Organotin concentrations increased in a dose-dependent pattern in dams, independent of the window of exposure. Tributyltin chloride administration significantly reduced maternal weight gain only at the highest dose (20 mg/kg); a significant increase in post-implantation loss and decreased litter sizes, in addition to decreased fetal weights, was observed in this group. Tributyltin chloride exposure did not result in external malformations, nor was there a change in sex ratios. However, exposure to 0.25, 2.5, or 10 mg/kg tributyltin chloride from gestation days (GD) 0-19 resulted in a significant increase in normalized anogenital distances in male fetuses; exposure from days 8-19 had no effect. There was a dramatic increase in the incidence of low weight (< or =0.75 of the mean) fetuses after exposure to 20 mg/kg tributyltin chloride. Delayed ossification of the fetal skeleton was observed after in utero exposure to either 10 mg/kg or 20 mg/kg tributyltin chloride. Serum thyroxine and triiodothyronine levels were reduced significantly in dams exposed to 10 and 20 mg/kg tributyltin chloride throughout gestation; in dams treated with tributyltin from GD 8-19, serum thyroxine concentrations, but not triiodothyronine, were significantly decreased at both the 2.5 and 10 mg/kg exposures. Thus, maternal thyroid hormone homeostasis may be important in mediating the developmental toxicity of organotins.

In previous studies, it was shown that waterborne Hg(II), Cd(II), and Mn(II) enter nerves innervating water-exposed sensory organs of fish and are transported to the brain by axonal transport. However, it is not known if organometals, such as tributyltin (TBT), can reach the brain of fish via the same route. In this work, we exposed rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) to waterborne [113Sn]-TBT (4.2 kBq/L). Three fish were sampled after a 2-week exposure, and three others were sampled after a 2-week depuration period. Another group of four fish received an intravenous injection of [113Sn]-TBT and were sampled after 2 and 14 d. Distribution of the radiolabel was visualized and quantified by quantitative whole-body autoradiography. The brain accumulated a significant amount of 113Sn, with hot spots being found in parts receiving sensory nerves from water-exposed sensory organs, such as eminentia granulares (lateral lines organs). Labeling of the brain was also seen for i.v.-injected fish, indicating that the blood-brain barrier is not impervious to TBT or its metabolites. Nevertheless, the distribution of radioactivity in the brain was much more uniform, with no evident hot spot. Though the transfer [water --> gills --> blood stream --> blood-brain barrier --> brain] may account for a certain proportion of the radiolabel accumulation in fish brain, exposure to [113Sn]-TBT via water resulted in higher accumulation in some areas of the brain, of which the specific location strongly suggests that it was taken up in different water-exposed sensory nerve terminals and transported directly to the brain by axonal transport, as the parent compound or as a metabolite. The resulting local enhancement of the accumulation of butyltins might jeopardize the integrity of nervous system. Further work is needed to assess the toxicological significance of this process.

In archived samples from the German Environmental Specimen Bank, organotin compounds including tributyltin (TBT) and triphenyltin (TPT) as well as their degradation products were quantified. Biota samples from North Sea and Baltic Sea areas were analyzed by gas chromatography/atomic emission detection-coupling after extraction and Grignard or ethylborate derivatization. TBT and TPT were detected in nearly all samples. A decrease of TPT contamination was observed in bladder wrack, common mussels, and eelpout muscle tissues in the period 1985-1999. In this period, TPT concentrations in North Sea mussels decreased from 98 to 7 ng/g (as organotin cation concentration in wet tissue). Concentrations of TBT remained relatively constant with 17 +/- 3 ng/g for mussels from a site with nearby marine traffic and 8 +/- 2 ng/g for a more remote area. The results reflect that TBT is still used as a biocide in antifouling paints whereas the use of TPT as a co-toxicant in such preparations had been ceased in the 1980s. The fact that the use of TBT in antifouling paints was banned in 1991 for small boats within the European Community seems not to have resulted in a decrease of TBT levels in marine biota.

Accumulation of tributyltin (TBT) was determined in liver of olive flounder exposed to TBT (3.65, 36.5, 365, 3,650, and 7,300 ng Sn/L) for 10 or 30 days, followed by 60 days depuration. Effect of TBT on hepatic cytochrome P450 content was also measured in liver of olive flounder. TBT was highly accumulated in liver of fish during the 10- to 30-day exposures, and hepatic cytochrome P450 content decreased with increasing TBT concentration. Hepatic cytochrome P450 contents were affected in olive flounder exposed to even environmentally relevant TBT concentrations, such as 3.65 ng Sn/L. In addition, the liver TBT levels demonstrated strong negative correlation to the hepatic cytochrome P450 content. The effects started to appear from 20 ng Sn/g dry weight of TBT in liver. Tributyltin concentrations and hepatic cytochrome P450 were also determined in feral fine-spotted flounder. The relationship between other organic pollutants known as cytochrome P450 inducers (e.g., polychlorinated biphenyls) as well as TBT and hepatic cytochrome P450 in the feral fish implied that TBT even at ppt level could impose antagonistic effects on hepatic cytochrome P450 induction.

Butyltin species were measured in sediments from coastal locations in the Gulf and Gulf of Oman. Both butyltin and phenyltin species were measured in biota samples from four countries in this region. With tributyltin (TBT) concentrations up to 60 ngSng(-1), some sediments could be classified as contaminated (i.e. TBT>1.3 ngSng(-1)), namely Dukhan (Qatar), the BAPCO industrial complex and Askar (Bahrain), and Hilf and the Raysut Port Area (Oman). Higher concentrations of total butyltins were found in oysters relative to fish, but ranging from 6.5 to 488 ngSng(-1) dry weight they are nonetheless relatively low. Diphenyltin and triphenyltin were found in some fish and bivalves from the Gulf, but not in biota from the Gulf of Oman. The environmental levels of organotin species are comparatively low by global standards and pose no immediate public health problems.

The effect of the concentration of tributyltin (TBT) in feed on the dietary bioaccumulation of tributyltin chloride (TBTCl) was studied in an 8-week uptake experiment and a 4-week elimination experiment using red sea bream (Pagrus major). The biomagnification factor (BMF) and the assimilation efficiency (AE) decreased from 0.30 to 0.15 and from 13% to 5.9%, respectively, as the TBT concentration in feed increased from 1.3 to 20 microg/g. The elimination rate constant (k(2)) was independent of the TBT concentration in the fish. Laboratory measurements of the BMF and AE of TBTCl underestimate actual field values if highly contaminated feed is used. Judging from the BMF and AE, the risk of the bioaccumulation of TBTCl through the food chain might be smaller than that of polychlorinated biphenyls., (Copyright 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd.)

Imposex, i.e., the imposition of male sexual characteristics on female neograstropods, has been used worldwide as a bioindicator of pollution by the antifouling agent TBT as well as to assess the related ecological impact. The recent total ban on the use of TBT in the maritime industry has been partly based on the use of such a biomarker. This is mainly based on the assumption that no other pollutant, or environmental stress, is able to induce such a biological response. Nonetheless, several authors had challenged this idea. The present paper will present further field observations on imposex in Hexaplex trunculus from Malta (Central Mediterranean) which may help clarify this issue. Furthermore, the incidence of imposex in this species will be related to body burdens and to the environmental levels of organotins as measured analytically. First histological observations will also be presented which may help clarify the ecological significance of this response in this species. Finally a number of alternative scenarios regarding the relationship between imposex and TBT will be discussed.

Activation of caspases has been demonstrated to be involved in thrombocytopenia and prolonged storage of platelet concentrates. Platelets represent enucleate cells that comprise all elements of the mitochondrial apoptosis pathway. However, no apoptotic stimuli capable of activating the endogenous caspase cascade have been identified so far. Using tributyltin (TBT) we could identify a compound that is capable of activating caspase-9 and -3 in platelets. Recent studies implicate that TBT induces apoptosis via the mitochondrial signaling pathway that is characterized by the formation of a high-molecular-weight complex (apoptosome) containing the adapter protein Apaf-1 and active caspase-9. Interestingly, addition of TBT induced the activation of caspase-9 in an ultra-rapid kinetic within the first 2 min. In addition, size exclusion chromatography revealed that TBT-mediated processing of caspase-9 occurs in the absence of the apoptosome. Thus, these data implicate that TBT induces the activation of caspase-9 by a mechanism not involving the formation of the apoptosome.

Aquatic pollution resulting from extensive usage of organotin compounds has been of great concern due to their deleterious effects in nontarget organisms. However, organotin contamination in deep-sea ecosystems has been rarely studied. The presentwork attempted to determine butyltin and phenyltin compounds in deep-sea fish collected between 1000 and 1800 m depth in the NW Mediterranean. The concentration of tributyltin (TBT) and its degradation products, mono- (MBT) and dibutyltin (DBT), aswell astriphenyltin (TPT),and mono- anddiphenyltin (MPT, DPT) was determined in different tissues (liver, gills, digestive tube, and muscle) of several fish species. Total butyltin residues were up to 175 ng/g wet wt, and they were comparable to levels found in coastal fish collected along the Catalan coast. In contrast, deep-sea fish contained much higher levels of phenyltins (up to 1700 ng/g wet wt), and particularly TPT (up to 1430 ng/g wet wt), than previously reported concentrations in shallow-water organisms. The obtained results confirm the long-range transport of organotin compounds to the deep-sea environment, and the subsequent exposure of fish inhabiting nonpoint source areas. The use of TPT in agriculture or as an antifouling agent, its transport to the deep-sea environment associated to particulate matter, and its nonbiodegradable nature in the food chain may account for the high residue levels detected in deep-sea organisms.

This study assesses the relative importance of water and sediments as vectors of TBT uptake in the sediment-dwelling suspension feeder, Ruditapes decussatus. Accumulation of TBT was determined in R. decussatus exposed for 60 days to moderately high but environmentally realistic levels of TBT in water (100 ng Snl(-1)) and sediments (0.8 microg Sn g(-1) dw), separately or in combination, using constant-flow systems. The results indicate that this species accumulates TBT predominantly from water. Although some accumulation from sediments does occur, the processing of large amounts of water needed to sustain the filter-feeding habits of this species is a prime determinant of TBT uptake. The route of exposures reflected in tissue distributions of TBT in R. decussatus. However, gills are the most important site for accumulation of TBT from water, irrespective of whether contaminated sediments are present or not.

Marine bivalves are exposed to contaminants via the aqueous phase, sediments and food. Nevertheless, the relative importance of these phases as uptake vectors of contaminants in these marine organisms has not been well studied. Phytoplankton concentrate contaminants from seawater and given their position at the base of most marine food webs, these algal cells may play critical roles in the transfer of contaminants to higher trophic levels. This study assesses the relative importance of microalgae as a vector of tributylin (TBT) uptake in the infaunal, suspension-feeding bivalve Ruditapes decussatus. Accumulation of TBT via the algal diet was determined by experimental exposure of R. decussatus to 14C-TBT labelled phytoplankton Isochrisis galbana, for a period up to 60 days. The digestive tract of these clams initially accumulates TBT preferentially from food. After a few weeks of exposure, internal remobilization results in a more widespread partitioning of TBT amongst tissues.

Accumulation of tributyltin (TBT) in serum, liver, muscle, and gill of olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) was examined in a 30-d static-renewal exposure. Tributyltin accumulated rapidly in the serum of the olive flounder and to a greater extent than in the other tissues. The accumulated TBT concentrations in tissues were in the order of serum > gill > liver > muscle on a dry-weight basis. Tributyltin also was detected in the serum of feral fine-spotted flounder, Pleuronichthys cornutus, collected from the coastal area. The mean TBT concentration in serum (2,470 ng Sn/g) of the fine-spotted flounder was about 40 times higher than that in the liver (60 ng Sn/g) and 200 times higher than that in the muscle (27 ng Sn/g) on a dry-weight basis. The TBT concentrations in serum and sediment demonstrated a positive correlation. The percent TBT composition to total butyltin was much higher in the serum (71%) than in the other tissues and sediment (<47%). These results suggest that the analysis of fish blood serum could be a useful tool for monitoring exposure to TBT in the marine environment.

Nucella lapillus imposex (superimposition of male characters onto prosobranch females) and organotin body burden were surveyed in the Portuguese coast in 1997 and 2000. Time comparisons of the available data on Nucella lapillus imposex in the Portuguese coast indicate a global increase of TBT pollution in recent years, revealing the inefficacy of the 1993 legislation that bans the use of TBT paints on small boats (<25 m). The absence or scarcity of the species inside harbours, which are the most polluted sites in Portugal, is probably a consequence of extinction due to female sterilisation by TBT.

The ability of Spartina alterniflora to degrade tributyltin (TBT) in contaminated dredge spoils was investigated in a created wetland at Little Creek Naval Amphibious Base in Norfolk, Virginia, USA. Concentrations of TBT up to 250 ng/g did not inhibit S. alterniflora growth over a 16-month period. Disappearance rates of TBT in vegetated and unvegetated treatments were similar, with half-lives of 300 to 330 d. Disappearance rates were not constant, but they were correlated to temperature changes and were possibly due to microbial degradation within the sediment. Of the initial amount of TBT in the sediment, only 0.4% accumulated in S. alterniflora biomass. Uptake of TBT by S. alterniflora was greatest in belowground biomass (43 ng/g). During plant senescence, most of the TBT was retained in the detrital material. Whereas S. alterniflora did not expedite the degradation of TBT, using TBT-contaminated dredge spoils to create wetlands is plausible. However, this should only be undertaken after further investigation into the potential for plant biomass to become a biovector for TBT.

A newly developed toxicity test organism, the Chinese rare minnow ( Gobiocypris rarus), which has similar merits to some common experimental fishes and could become a standardized test species for China, was used in a short-term study with emphasis on accumulation in fish muscles and cytological effects of sublethal concentrations of tri-n-butyltin chloride (TBT). The 1-year-old fish were exposed for 1 or 2 weeks to a concentration range of 50 to 5,000 ng TBT/L in static systems. Hepatosomatic Index (HSI) and Gonad Somatic Index (GSI) sensitively showed the adverse effects of TBT to the fish. Compared with the nominal TBT concentrations in water phase, 459-(5,000 ng TBT/L, 1 week) to 4,065- (50 ng TBT/L, 2 weeks)-fold higher concentrations of butyltin species were detected in the corresponding exposure fish muscle. Contaminations of TBT in muscle tissue increased with both the exposure levels and exposure time. The cellular pathological effects in the liver were studied. These included vacuoles with increasing number and size, swelling of mitochondria, abnormal nuclei, and decreases of rough endoplasmic reticulum cisternaes. The results confirmed that the Chinese rare minnow ( G. rarus) could be utilized as a useful species to evaluate water toxicity in the laboratory.

Fifty four sediment samples and three pooled samples of whole three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculleatus) collected from four marinas located along the south-western coast of the Gulf of Gdańsk, Baltic Sea, Poland, were examined for butyltins (BTs) i.e., tributyltin (TBT), dibutyltin (DBT) and monobutyltin (MBT), to understand the degree of pollution and distribution pattern. Total butyltin concentrations in sediments from the marina of the city of Gdynia ranged between 130 and 20,000 ng Sn/g dry wt. with a mean value of 2,900 ng Sn/g. In sediments collected from the marinas located in the area of the Brave Vistula River Channel BT concentrations ranged between 10 to 15,000 ng Sn/g drywt. with a mean values between 500 and 5,500 ng Sn/g, and the innermost sites of each of four marinas were the most polluted. The mean BT concentrations in three-spined stickleback were between 1,500 and 3,100 ng Sn/g wetwt. and the values followed mean concentrations noted in sediments from the corresponding marina. The pleasure yachts are identified as the main source of BT pollution of sediment and fish. Tributyltin was a major form of BTs present in sediments (between 24 and 43%) and in three-spined stickleback (between 54 and 70%), suggesting a very recent use of marine paints containing TBT in pleasure yachts. Evidently at the Polish coast of the Baltic Sea TBT was continuously used in 1997 in marine paints for boats less then 25 m long.
