The application of natural pigments like anthocyanin carries substantial implications in various industries due to their health benefits, including antioxidant abilities, limiting resistance reduction and anti-inflammatory activities. This study extracted anthocyanin from violet glutinous rice (VGC) by microwave-assisted extraction (MAE). The process was optimized concerning different extracting parameters such as solvent concentration (H2O, Ethanol 50, 60, and 70%), material-to-solvent ratio (1/5, 1/10, 1/15, 1/20), microwave power (100, 200, 300W) and microwave support time (3, 5, 7, 10 min). Moreover, the antioxidant property of the obtained anthocyanin was investigated using the DPPH (2.2-diphenylpicrylhydrazyl) and ABTS (2,2-azinobis [3-ethylbenzothiazoline- 6-sulphonic acid]) assays. The highest anthocyanin content, 1.572 mg/g, was achieved at the following conditions: 50% ethanol, the solid/liquid ratio (1:10 mL/g), extraction time (5 min), and microwave power (100W). The antioxidant activity of the ethanol extract of violet glutinous rice with values IC50 was achieved at 93.18 µg/ml, and 32.66 µg/ml for DPPH and ABTS scavenging activity, respectively.

Garlic is a globally used spice due to its pungent taste and a fishy deodorant and digestive stimulator. Owing to the widespread use of garlic in both Oriental and Western medicine, further investigations on garlic extracts might carry important implications in the industry. In this study, we conducted extraction of garlic extraction by two conventional methods and an ultrasonic assisted method. The processes were optimized with respect to various quality parameters including polyphenol, flavonoid content, and antioxidant activity. The results showed that extracting garlic under the ultrasonic support will show higher efficiency than the non-ultrasonic extraction. The optimal extraction parameters are: 70% ethanol solvent, 10/1 solvent / material ratio, 40 °C temperature and 40 minutes time. Glycosmis stenocarpa is a species of shrub found in the Northern provinces of Vietnam. Its roots contain different carbazolic derivatives, mainly Murrayafoline A (Mu-A), which exhibits valuable biological activities. In this study, we performed an extraction of Mu-A from the roots of G. stenocarpa and optimized this process using response surface methodology (RSM) according to a central composite design, with three independent parameters including extraction time (min), extraction temperature (°C), and solvent/material ratio (mL/g). Two dependent variables were the Mu-A content (mg/g raw materials) and extraction efficiency (%). The optimal conditions to extract Mu-A were found to be as follows: extraction temperature, 67°C; extraction time, 165 min; and solvent/material ratio, 5:1. Under these conditions, the Mu-A content and extraction efficiency were 38.94 ± 1.31 mg/g raw materials and 34.98 ± 1.18%, respectively. Mu-A exhibited antiproliferation and antitumor-promoting activity against the HepG-2 cell line. The present optimization work of Mu-A extraction from G. stenocarpa roots contributed to the attempt of designing a large-scale extraction process for the compound and further exploitation of its potential in vivo applications.

Dietary inclusion of canthaxanthin, a common carotenoid pigment, has been long practiced in aquaculture to give the favorable flesh color in farmed salmonids. However, carotenoids are associated with limited solubility and poor physicochemical stability, and their dose in fish feed is widely regulated. In this study, we included canthaxanthin- and α-tocopherol-loaded liposomes into fish diets and evaluated the effects of supplemented fish feed on fish growth, color, nutrition, and canthaxanthin deposition in fillets of cultured rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). The liposomes were fabricated using lecithin as phospholipids with the initial concentrations (IC = mcanthaxanthin/mlipids, % wt/wt) of canthaxanthin at 0.1%, 0.5%, and 1.0%. Particle size characterization showed that liposome mean sizes were 109.70 ± 6.36, 105.10 ± 8.41, and 109.20 ± 5.66 nm (mean ± SD; n = 3), respectively, corresponding with liposomes synthesized at canthaxanthin IC = 0.1%, IC = 0.5%, and IC = 1%. The polydispersity index (PDI) of all samples remained lower than 0.2. There were no significant differences in the mean size and PDI between blank lecithin liposome and canthaxanthin- and α-tocopherol-loaded liposomes. The encapsulation efficiency of canthaxanthin- and α-tocopherol-loaded liposomes decreased when increasing the concentration of canthaxanthin in lecithin liposomes, with EE% values of IC = 0.1%, IC = 0.5%, and IC = 1% being 85.3 ± 2.1, 72.9 ± 1.8, and 55.3 ± 2.6, respectively. For fish growth, at the end of the experiment, final weight was significantly higher in fish fed with diet supplemented with 1 g/kg canthaxanthin- and α-tocopherol-loaded liposomes (IC = 0.5%) in comparison to other experimental control groups. The difference in color of the salmon muscle was most apparent after two months of feeding. However, after three months, there was no noticeable change in the color score of the fish muscle, indicating saturation of color of the fish muscle. The above results suggest the potential of canthaxanthin- and a-tocopherol-loaded liposomes as the red pigment in fish aquaculture.

Diversification of products that are derived from essential oils carries important implications in reducing agricultural waste and promoting the medicinal materials industry. In this study, we formulated a shampoo and a body wash product incorporated with lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) essential oils (LEOs) and evaluated their color stability and the LEO compositional change. We first determined the color change and chemical composition of bare LEO under different storage conditions. Afterward, the washing product base was formulated, and its formulation process was optimized to minimize the color change by varying a wide range of parameters including pH, the inclusion of preservatives and antioxidants, LEO/antioxidant ratio, and emulsification temperature. The base product was then used in body wash and shampoo formulation following our previously reported procedure. The results indicated that direct incorporation of the LEO into the cosmetic products resulted in better color stability and citral retention in comparison with emulsion formation. In addition, shampoo and body wash products showed no detectible presence of compounds resulting from citral decomposition such as 3,7-dimethyl-1,3,6-octatriene, p-mentha-1,5-dien-8-ol, and p-cymene-8-ol. The current findings are expected to aid in diversifying LEO-derived commodities and justifying scalability of the cosmetics production process with a focus on the incorporation of naturally derived ingredients.

The objective of this study was to determine the optimal value of factors affecting the antioxidant activity extraction of antioxidant activity of butterfly pea flowers. The investigated factors included extraction temperatures (30, 40, 50, 60, 70 and 80°C), extraction time (30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 minutes) and solid to solvent ratio (1:05, 1:10, 1:20, 1:40 and 1:50 g/mL). The efficiency of extraction was evaluated based on antioxidant activities which were measured by DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) free radical scavenging assay and ferric reducing antioxidant power assay (FRAP). The results showed that when the extraction process was performed at temperatures of 60°C, the resulting extracts with highest DPPH antioxidant activity (575.10 μmolTE/L) and FRAP (1093.83 μmolTE/L) was obtained. Considering the effect of extraction time on antioxidant activities of butterfly pea, time range of 30–90 minutes led to highest DPPH values while extracts with highest FRAP power were collected after 120 minutes. Moreover, decreasing solid-to-solvent ratio resulted in the decline in antioxidant activities.

The objective of this study was to determine the optimal value of factors affecting the extraction of antioxidant activity of Roselle calyces. The investigated factors included extraction temperatures (30, 40, 50, 60, 70 and 80°C), extraction time (30, 60, 90, 120 and 150 minutes) and solid to solvent ratio (1:5, 1:10, 1:20, 1:40 and 1:50 g/mL). The efficiency of extraction was evaluated based on antioxidant activities which were measured by DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) free radical scavenging assay, ferric reducing antioxidant power assay (FRAP). The results showed that when the extraction temperature range of 70–80°C, DPPH free radical scavenging and FRAP were highest with 677.47–725.81 μmolTE/L and 4186.91–4391.62 μmolTE/L, respectively. For the extraction time from 120 to 150 minutes, the resulting extracts with highest FRAP and DPPH free radical scavenging antioxidant capacity were obtained. Meanwhile, the antioxidant activity tended to decrease as the solvent/solid ratio increased.

At present, there are many different forms of relaxation and aromatic candles are one of the common forms. Scented candles not only provide background lighting but also help promoting a feeling of wellness. This study attempts to produce scented candles from natural sources such as soy wax, beeswax, and natural essential oils to bring the most practical benefits to the users. The produced candle should be long lasting, low cost and causes no health effects. The composition of scented candles included 60% beeswax, 30% soy wax, 8% lemongrass essential oil, 1% citric acid, and 1% ethanol.

To meetout the growing consumer demand for cosmetic preparations that incorporate biologically active and natural ingredients, this study utilized lemongrass essential oil to create the main scent for body wash products in place of artificial fragrances on the market. Lemongrass essential oil is distilled by the method of hydrodistillation with the optimum yield of 0.29%. The process of developing a body wash formula is based on the survey of parameters affecting the product qualities. Multiple parameters including detergent, humectants, skin emollient, foaming agent, preservative, essential oil content were investigated. The product was evaluated based on the criteria of the foamability, the durability of the emulsion and the storage of samples in different storage conditions (room temperature, heat shock, acceleration). The results indicate that lemongrass essential oil body wash formulae are on par with some other shower gel products on the market, opening up the development trend for new research products to enter the market.

The PB2 protein of the influenza virus RNA polymerase is a major virulence determinant of influenza viruses. It binds to the cap structure at the 5' end of host mRNA to generate short capped RNA fragments that are used as primers for viral transcription named cap-snatching. A large number of the compounds were shown to bind the minimal cap-binding domain of PB2 to inhibit the cap-snatching machinery. However, their binding in the context of an extended form of the PB2 protein has remained elusive. A previous study reported some promising compounds including azaindole and hydroxymethyl azaindole, which were analyzed here to predict binding affinity to PB2 protein using the steered molecular dynamics (SMD) and molecular mechanics Poisson-Boltzmann surface area (MM-PBSA) methods. The results show that the rupture force (Fmax) value of three complexes is in agreement with the binding free energy value (ΔGbind) estimated by the MM-PBSA method, whereas for the non-equilibrium pulling work (Wpull) value a small difference between A_PB2-4 and A_PB2-12 was observed. The binding affinity results indicate the A_PB2-12 complex is more favorable than the A_PB2-4 and A_PB2-16 complexes, which means the inhibitor (12) has the potential to be further developed as anti-influenza agents in the treatment of influenza A.

Soursop is a popular edible fruit in the world, because of its delicious taste as well as its pharmacological values and therapeutic uses. However, this is also a perishable fruit. To increase the value of this fruit, we conducted a study to optimize the process of creating dried soursop products by the response surface method. The optimal value was osmosis at 45 cmHg pressure and heat pump drying at 25°C, obtaining the dried soursop product with the highest vitamin C content of 0.382 ± 0.011 (mg/g DW).

The lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus L.) essential oil plays a vital role as an ingredient in different fields due to aromatic, antibacterial properties and antifungal activity. In this study, essential oil of lemongrass was obtained using hydrodistillation method and evaluated for chemical compositions and physico-chemical characteristics. The averaged physico-chemical parameters were determined as specific gravity (0.8865 g/cm3), acid index (2.948), ester index (6.402) and refractive index (9.35). Moreover, the hydrodistillation process performance was achieved 0.29%. The composition of essential oils was analyzed by GC-MS, revealing a total of 18 volatile constituents existing in the lemongrass oil. The major components were α-citral (40.838%), β-citral (28.494%), β-myrcene (16.654%), 2,3-dehydro-1,8-cineole (2.264%) and geraniol (2.388%). The citral component accounts for high content (more than 70% of volume) of oil.

Rhodomyrtus tomentosa (Ait.) Hassk is a fruit that is gradually becoming popular in Vietnam with superior bioactive compounds. This study aimed to determine the natural anthocyanins from Rhodomyrtus tomentosa (Ait.) Hassk based on extracts and optimized RSM. The Box-Behnken design was shown the influence of the optimal conditions for the MAE procedure are 5.07 min, 206 W and 2.53 g/mL with the optimal anthocyanin content achieved Y = 133.88 mg/L, all reactions are within the threshold of the predicted value. The results are in line with the proposed model for the anthocyanin extraction (R2 = 0.9849).

Anthocyanins are naturally occurring polyphenols that plays an essential role in the prevention and treatment of cancer, eye diseases, and so on. This study aimed to determine the natural anthocyanins from violet glutinous rice grown in Phu Tho province, Vietnam based on its extracts and optimize the process with response surface methodology (RSM). Four experimental parameters including the material-solvent ratio (g/mL), time (minutes) and microwave power (W) was selected for optimization. The maximum yield of anthocyanin was 1,385 mg/g, achieved at conditions of material-to-solvent ratio of 10.29 g/mL, a time of 4.4 min, and a microwave power of 90.54W. The established RSM model showed relative good fit with the experimental data regarding the anthocyanin extraction process (R2= 0.988).

Anthocyanins are naturally occurring compounds that are responsible for a wide variety of colors in many plants, fruits and vegetables. In this study, the extraction of natural anthocyanins from VietnameseCarissa carandasL. beverage was optimized using response surface methodology (RSM). We applied a Box–Behnken design consisting of three levels and three factors. Examined factors are extraction temperature (ranging from 40 to 60°C), liquid to solid ratio (ranging from 2:1 to 4:1), extraction time (ranging from 30 to 60 min). Using 60% ethanol as solvent for the process, we determined the maximum yields of anthocyanin was 273.786 mg/L. This yield corresponds to extraction conditions of 3:1 (v/w) liquid to solid ratio, temperature of 48.10 °C with a 44.08 min extraction time. The experimental results also fit well with the proposed response model of anthocyanin yield (R2= 0.9992). Therefore, this study suggested optimization of different extraction methods for the defatted fruit parts.

The purpose of this study was to examine the phytochemical content and antioxidant activity of Coptosapelta flavescens Korth root extract obtained from various places. Phytochemical screening, antioxidant activity testing using DPPH radical reduction, color reaction (ABTS), iron reduction (FRAP), reduction capacity technique (RP), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC). The phytochemical tests revealed that C. flavescens water and ethanol extract included alkaloids, coumarins, terpenoids, tannins, and flavonoids. The antioxidant activity results revealed that raw material samples gathered directly in the wild in Ninh Son district (Ninh Thuan province, Vietnam) were more effective than those purchased at the local market with EC50 times value. DPPH, ABTS, FRAP, RP, and TAC techniques yielded 56.02 µg/ml, 54.12 µg/ml, 15.9 µg/ml, 44.85 µg/ml, and 110.94 µg/ml, respectively. The antioxidant impact of raw material samples obtained in Bac Ai district (Ninh Son province, Vietnam) was lower but overall better than that of samples gathered at the local market.

In this work, we consider the electronic and optical properties of chemically functionalized InN monolayers with F and Cl atoms (i.e., F–InN–F, F–InN–Cl, Cl–InN–F, Cl–InN–Cl monolayers) using first-principles calculations. The adsorption of the F and Cl atoms on the InN monolayer is determined to be chemically stable and the F–InN–F monolayer is most likely to occur. Our calculations show that the chemical functionalization with Cl and F atoms not only breaks the planar structure of InN monolayer but also increases its band gap. By using both Perdew, Burke, and Ernzerhof (PBE) and the Heyd–Scuseria–Ernzerhof (HSE06) hybrid functionals, all four models of chemically functionalized InN monolayers are found to be semiconductors with direct energy gaps and these gaps depend on the constituent species. When the spin–orbit coupling (SOC) was included, the energy gap of these monolayers was reduced and an energy splitting was found at the Γ-point in the valence band. Chemically functionalized InN monolayers can absorb light in a wide region, especially the F–InN–F and Cl–InN–F monolayers have a strong ability to absorb the visible light. Our findings reveal that the chemically functionalized InN monolayers have potential applications in next-generation optoelectronic devices.

Imidacloprid, acephate, and carbaryl are common insecticides that are extensively used in planting mango, a well-known fruit in Vietnam, to ease mango hopper issues. The accurate detection of pesticide residues is critical for mango export to meet quality criteria. This study developed a novel SERS platform by using polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) to simulate the rose petal structure incorporated with a silver coating layer and silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) to detect imidacloprid, acephate, and carbaryl in mango fruits. In this paper, the rose petal PDMS/Ag-AgNPs replica was considered the most efficient substrate for SERS measurement with an EF of 4.7 × 107. The Raman spectra of the three insecticides obtained from the PDMS/Ag-AgNPs substrate were clearly observed with their characteristic peaks of 1105 cm−1 for imidacloprid, 1083 cm−1, and 1579 cm−1 for acephate, and 727 cm−1 and 1378 cm−1 for carbaryl. The application of PDMS/Ag-AgNPs substrate in quantitative analysis of the three pesticides in mango fruit was evaluated. As a result, the limit of detection was 0.02 mg/kg for imidacloprid, 5 × 10−5 mg/kg for acephate, and 5 × 10−3 mg/kg for carbaryl. The SERS result also revealed that the pesticide residues in the mango sample were within an acceptable limit. This suggested the possibility of the rose petal PDMS/Ag-AgNPs replica for rapid quantification of pesticide residues not only in mango fruit but also in many other agricultural products.

The aim of this work is to investigate the binding affinity between the prokaryotic proteins-AHU-IHF proteins (AHU (AHU2, TR3, and AHU6) and IHF (IHF-WT and IHF-βE44A))-and DNAs (DNA, H'-DNA, and H'44A-DNA) by using the steered molecular dynamics (SMD) simulation and the molecular mechanics Poisson-Boltzmann surface area (MM-PBSA) method. The gained results show that although the fluctuation of the pulling force yielded the change of the pulling work, the higher pulling work of the AHU/DNA complexes in comparison to those of the IHF/DNA complexes is not only dependent on the pulling force but also controlled by the change of the trajectory in SMD simulation process. In this study, the pulling work profile not only described the pulling pathway of the complexes but also reflected the hindered process of DNAs when AHU-IHF proteins come out from the binding pocket of DNAs. Additionally, the binding free energy (estimated by the MM-PBSA method) is more confident in giving a true effect to the experimental results in comparison to the pulling force and the pulling work values. These results have also shown a fact that the AHU/DNA complexes were more stable than the IHF/DNA complexes.

Targeted chemotherapy is a current research trend in cancer treatment that aims to improve the effectiveness of drug access to cancer cells. Among the vitamins, biotin has been identified as an effective targeting agent in drug delivery to cancer cells. In this work, novel biotin-conjugated chitosan-Pluronic P123, termed Cs–P123-Bio, was developed as a carrier vehicle for delivering paclitaxel (PTX) to the tumour target. The results show that Cs–P123-Bio was stable with a low critical micelle concentration (31.83 ± 4.25 μg/mL), and the encapsulation efficacy and drug loading of Cs–P123-Bio were around 94.67 ± 3.67% and 1.89 ± 0.07%, respectively. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), dynamic light scattering (DLS) and electrophoretic light scattering (ELS) analysis indicated that the Cs–P123-Bio nanoparticles loaded with PTX formed as a spherical shape with an average diameter of 63.4 ± 0.6 nm and a positive charge. Furthermore, the PTX release profile was slow and controlled by the pH of the medium. In particular, in vitro biocompatibility assays indicated that Cs–P123-Bio exhibited good biological compatibility with a human foreskin fibroblast cell line and Cs–P123-Bio manifested good internalization efficiency in MCF-7 cells. Cs–P123-Bio also enhanced the cytotoxicity of PTX in comparison with Cs–P123. Therefore, our approach could suggest excellent potential for tumour targeting in cancer therapy.

This study reports on the optimization of a microwave-assisted distillation process to obtain Dong Van marjoram essential oil, and the determination of its composition, content of constituents, and cytotoxic and antimicrobial activities. Using the response surface method (RSM), the optimal essential oil distillation conditions were determined as material size 0.74 (cm), water to material ratio 4.14:1 (mL/g), microwave power 302.4 (W), and distillation time 2.1 hours. At optimal conditions, the mass of Dong Van marjoram essential oil obtained was 0.887 ± 0.007 g, corresponding to a content of 0.6% essential oil in the material. GC-MS and GC-FID methods showed that the main chemical constituents of Dong Van marjoram essential oils obtained were rosefuran epoxide (44.9%), caryophyllene (10.8%), germacrene D (2.6%), and α-humulene (1.3%). The essential oil exhibited moderate inhibition against both tested cancer cell lines, with IC50 values of 23.9 µg/mL (for PC3) and 56.2 µg/mL (for A549). However, the oil exhibited strong effectiveness against three bacterial strains, Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, and Staphylococcus aureus, and a yeast strain, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, with minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values ranged from 50 to 100 µg/mL.

Mangiferin (C19H18O11) is a C-glucoside xanthone that is mainly found in the leaves of mango (Mangifera indica L). The compound has been recognized for several pharmacological values, including antioxidant and antibacterial activities. Therefore, the present study aims to utilize the old leaves of mango as a potential source for mangiferin extraction and purification, and evaluate its antimicrobial and antioxidant properties. In the present study, mangiferin was extracted from a local variety of mango leaves using ultrasonic-assisted extraction methods and ethanol as the extraction solvent. The crude ethanolic extract of mangiferin was then purified by the liquid–liquid fractionation method with dichloromethane and ethyl acetate, then further separated by HPLC. The crude extract, ethyl acetate fractions and purified mangiferin were investigated for anti-microorganism activity against Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp. and Aspergillus flavus by using the paper disc diffusion assay. The results have shown that the extraction efficiency was 14.17%. The obtained mangiferin was 1.97 g of content and 94.2% of purity. The oxidation resistance of purified mangiferin was 1.77 times higher than the crude extract and 1.05 times higher than the standard mangiferin (IC50 = 13.841 μg/mL). However, the purified mangiferin has shown no inhibitory action against the experimental strains of microorganisms. The findings from the present study suggest an effective scheme of extraction and purification to obtain mangiferin from the local variety of mango with high purity and antioxidant potential.

The Codonopsis javanica, also known as “Đảng sâm” in Vietnamese, is a medicinal plant of high economic value. In this study, we further extended the previously reported process to produce C. javanica root extract by examining the concentrating stage to produce dried extract. Afterwards, effects of storage conditions on were evaluated and the pilot scale extraction process was compared with the lab-scale process. These processes were investigated with respect to different extract quality parameters including total polyphenol content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), DPPH and ABTS scavenging activity. Best conditions for the concentration process included time of 120 minutes, temperature of 60°C. The efficiency of extracting C. javanica extract at pilot scale shows a difference of about 20% and this dried extract will retain the best quality when stored at 5°.

For a long time, the ethnic minorities in Ninh Thuan province, Vietnam have mixed Coptosapelta tomentosa Rubiaceae with other types of medicinal herbs to create an esoteric remedy called “Cao Khai”. This study had provided scientific evidence on phytochemical screening and antioxidant potentials of diethyl ether, ethanol and aqueous extracts of “Cao Khai”. Phytochemical screening of crude “Cao Khai” extracts showed the presence of mutiple components such as saponins, flavonoids, volatile oils, triterpenoids, organic acids, anthraquinon, coumarin, reducing compounds and polyuronid. The polyphenols and flavonoids content were determined using gallic acid and quercetin as a standard, respectively. 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2′–azino–bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) methods were used to measure free radical scavenging capacity. Results have shown that the total polyphenol and flavonoids content achieved 49.67 ± 0.35 µgGAE/mg and 5.49 ± 0.84 μgQE/mg, respectively. “Cao Khai” had low IC50 values of 126.06 ± 1.33 µg/mL (DPPH) and 35.4 ± 0.74 µg/mL (ABTS), which indicated that the crude drug “Cao Khai” illustrated significant free radical scavenging activity in a dose-dependent manner, as compared to ascorbic acid.

The aim of this study is to evaluate the antibacterial activity of fractions from Tinospora crispa (L.) Hook. f. & Thomson stem extract. The extraction was fractionated by solvents with increasing polarity, then partioned with acidic water and base to concentrate alkaloids. There are totally 7 fractions named PD-hex, PD-K, PD-Cf2, PD-Cf1, PD-EtOAc, PD-BuOH and PD-N. With the help of disc diffusion method, 7 fractions were separately evaluated for their ability to inhibit the growth of some common bacterial species, including 3 Gram-positive and 3 Gram-negative bacteria. The result showed that Tinospora crispa was able to restrain the growth of the 3 Gram-positive species but not the 3 Gram-negative species. Antibacterial substances distributed in 6 over 7 fractions tested, excluding PD-K fraction. PD-K sample mainly contained strong basic alkaloid and soluble water. Especially, weak basic alkaloids in PD-Cf2 were able to restrict the bacterial growth stronger than stronger basic alkaloids in PD-K. On the other hand, ethyl acetate fraction (PD-EtOAc), which contained medium polar compounds, were able to restrict the growth of bacteria slightly better than the others. It was subjected to traditional column chromatography to isolate some components. The purified substance was structurally identified by thin-layer chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography and spectroscopic data analyses.

The growing demand for natural products has spurred the idea of replacing synthetic fragrances with essential oils with antibacterial properties. Essential oils distilled from commercially valuable Cymbopogon citratus species has citral as a major component and finds a wide range of application such as flavors and aromas in perfumes, cosmetics, soaps, and detergents and in the pharmaceutical industry. Via hydrodistillation, the extraction yield of essential oil reached 0.29%. The components for formulation of the cleaning product were determined through a survey of active ingredients: 4.5% Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulphate (SLES), Ethylendiamin Tetraacetic Acid (EDTA-2Na), 0.7% Coco Amido Propyl Betaine (CAPB), 1% Hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC), Sodium Benzoate, 0.3% Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), 0.1% NaCl and 0.2% lemongrass essential oil. The finished product was evaluated based on the foaming ability and durability of the emulsion. At the same time, samples stored at different conditions (e.g. room temperature, acceleration, thermal shock) were evaluated for its durability. The results show that citronella oil can be used as a valuable cosmetic material, an antibacterial agent, while not adversely affecting the usability of floor cleaning liquid.

In this study, the specific chemical composition of Seedless Lemon (Citrus latifolia) grown in Hau Giang Province, Vietnam was determined. The experiment was conducted based on the baseline methods referenced from previous studies. The results of the component survey show that, in Persian Lime, the acidity is 0.637 ± 0.08 g/L and 4.916 ± 0.03 g/L respectively with lemon peel and lemon juice (pH is 4.5 and 2 respectively). The basic components are also determined with the parameters corresponding to lemon peel and lemon juice including: Brix 2% and 8%, ash 1,780 ± 0.004% and 0.314 ± 0.002%, lipid content 2.93 ± 0.044% and 0.542 ± 0.051%. In which, the content of vitamin C in lemon juice is quite good, reaching 8.392 ± 0.28 mg/g. This research helps shape the basic parameters of local Vietnamese raw materials, thereby laying the premise for the development of related products.

The root of a ginseng-like plant named Codonopsis javanica is a valuable ingredient in folk medicine with diverse biological properties and has been used in treatments for various diseases, including leukemia, inflammation, and hepatitis. This study aimed to optimize various parameters related to the extraction process of C. javanica root (CJR) with respect to total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content, and antioxidant activities of the obtained CJR extract. We first performed a series of single-factor investigations taking drying conditions and different extraction parameters such as material size, extraction solvent, solvent concentration, extraction temperature, material/solvent ratio, extraction cycle, and stirring speed as varying factors. Then, a response surface methodology procedure was adopted with a central composite design to optimize further the extraction process in order to maximize the TPC. We found that the use of convection drying at 70 °C for 8 hours gave the extract with the highest TPC and antioxidant activities. Optimal extraction parameters were found as follows: ethanol with a concentration of 56.0% as the solvent, material-to-solvent ratio of 1/38.0 g/mL, extraction time of 67.2 minutes, material size ≤0.5 mm, temperature 60 °C, through 1 extraction cycle, and with a stirring speed of 300 rpm. Under the optimized conditions, the experimental value for TPC was 2.9 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g dry weight (DW), which is reasonably close to the value predicted by the model (2.8 mg GAE/g DW). The half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) values determined by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl and 2,2′-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid free radical tests of the CJR extract obtained under optimal conditions were 1042.3 and 299.0 µg/mL, respectively.

We investigate the electronic, photocatalytic and optical properties of a fully hydrogenated indium nitride H–InN–H monolayer under biaxial strain e b and external electric field E using density functional theory. Our findings demonstrate that the H–InN–H monolayer is a semiconductor with an indirect energy gap of 2.591 eV. Under a biaxial strain or electric field, the indirect-direct band gap transition can occur and its band gap depends dramatically on the e b and E. Our analysis of band edge alignment shows that the H–InN–H monolayer can possess photocatalytic activity for water splitting when an electric field or biaxial strain is applied. The optical characteristics of the H–InN–H monolayer depends greatly on the strain. The first optical gap of the H–InN–H monolayer is at the incident energy light of 3.320 eV and the tensile strain causes the first optical gap to shift towards the visible light region.

The aim of this research is to evaluate the stability of anthocyanins in extracts obtained from the flower of butterfly pea flower (Clitoria ternatea L.). Different combinations of solvents were created by mixing ethanol 50%, distilled water and different amounts of acids (ethanol 50 %, ethanol 50 % with 1.5N HCL, ethanol 50 % with 1.5N CH3COOH, distilled water, distilled water with 1.5N HCL, distilled water with 1.5N CH3COOH). To evaluate the stability of extracted pigment, it was kept for 3 months in oven at 45°C, ambient 25°C and refrigerated conditions at 10 °C. The temperature exerted dramatic effects on the total anthocyanins properties of the butterfly pea flower when stored in these conditions. The retained anthocyanin content of all treated samples was all higher than 60%, with distilled water 50% of 1.5N HCl (61.93%) and distilled water with 1.5 N CH3COOH (65.59%).

The Pepper (Piper nigrum L.) with spicy flavor, which is considered as one of the special spices in Vietnamese dishes. In the pepper contains a high content of essential oils contained in seeds and leaves, which not only have antioxidant and antibacterial resistance but also anti-Colon toxin, antidepressant, antifungal, analgesic, antidiarrhoeal. In the present study, we optimized the yield of essential oils obtained from Pepper leaves by Microwave-assisted hydrodistillation (MAHD) extraction method by examining the factors that affect the extraction process such as the size of leaves, the ratio of materials with solvent, time and microwave power. The highest essential oil performance achieved 0.94 mL/g by MAHD at grind size, extraction time (40 min), the ratio of water to raw materials (4:1mL/g), and microwave power (450W). A total of 22 volatile constituents were identified from the pepper leaves oil, with the major components being 3-Carene, D-Limonene, Caryophyllene, and β-Pinene.
