We present high angular resolution 1.1mm continuum and spectroscopic ALMA observations of the well-known massive proto-cluster Mon R 2 IRS 3.The continuum image at 1.1mm shows two components, IRS 3 A and IRS 3 B, that are separated by $\sim$0.65$"$. We estimate that IRS 3 A is responsible of $\sim$80 % of the continuum flux, being the most massive component. We explore the chemistry of IRS 3 A based on the spectroscopic observations. In particular, we have detected intense lines of S-bearing species such as SO, SO$_2$, H$_2$CS and OCS, and of the Complex Organic Molecules (COMs) methyl formate (CH$_3$OCHO) and dimethyl ether (CH$_3$OCH$_3$). The integrated intensity maps of most species show a compact clump centered on IRS 3 A, except the emission of the COMs that is more intense towards the near-IR nebula located to the south of IRS 3 A, and HC$_3$N whose emission peak is located $\sim$0.5$"$ NE from IRS 3 A. The kinematical study suggests that the molecular emission is mainly coming from a rotating ring and/or an unresolved disk. Additional components are traced by the ro-vibrational HCN $\nu_2$=1 3$\rightarrow$2 line which is probing the inner disk/jet region, and the weak lines of CH$_3$OCHO, more likely arising from the walls of the cavity excavated by the molecular outflow. Based on SO$_2$ we derive a gas kinetic temperature of T$_k$$\sim$ 170 K towards the IRS 3 A. The most abundant S-bearing species is SO$_2$ with an abundance of $\sim$ 1.3$\times$10$^{-7}$, and $\chi$(SO/SO$_2$) $\sim$ 0.29. The chemical and physical evolution of starless and pre-stellar cores are of paramount importance to understanding the process of star formation. The Taurus Molecular Cloud cores TMC 1-C and TMC 1-CP share similar initial conditions and provide an excellent opportunity to understand the evolution of the pre-stellar core phase. We investigated the evolutionary stage of starless cores based on observations towards the prototypical dark cores TMC 1-C and TMC 1-CP, mapping them in the CS $3\rightarrow 2$, C$^{34}$S $3\rightarrow 2$, $^{13}$CS $2\rightarrow 1$, DCN $1\rightarrow 0$, DCN $2\rightarrow 1$, DNC $1\rightarrow 0$, DNC $2\rightarrow 1$, DN$^{13}$C $1\rightarrow 0$, DN$^{13}$C $2\rightarrow 1$, N$_2$H$^+$ $1\rightarrow 0$, and N$_2$D$^+$ $1\rightarrow 0$ transitions. We performed a multi-transitional study of CS and its isotopologs, DCN, and DNC lines to characterize the physical and chemical properties of these cores. We studied their chemistry using the state-of-the-art gas-grain chemical code Nautilus and pseudo time-dependent models to determine their evolutionary stage. Observational diagnostics seem to indicate that TMC 1-C is in a later evolutionary stage than TMC 1-CP, with a chemical age $\sim$1 Myr. TMC 1-C shows signs of being an evolved core at the onset of star formation, while TMC 1-CP appears to be in an earlier evolutionary stage due to a more recent formation or, alternatively, a collapse slowed down by a magnetic support., Comment: 26 pages, 10 figures

Gas phase Elemental abundances in Molecular CloudS (GEMS) is an IRAM 30m Large Program designed to estimate the S, C, N, and O depletions and gas ionization degree, X(e-), in a set of star-forming filaments of Taurus, Perseus and Orion. Our immediate goal is to build up a complete database of molecular abundances that can serve as an observational basis for estimating X(e-) and the C, O, N, and S depletions through chemical modeling. We observed and derived the abundances of 14 species (13CO, C18O, HCO+, H13CO+, HC18O+, HCN, H13CN, HNC, HCS+, CS, SO, 34SO, H2S, and OCS) in 244 positions, covering the AV 3 to 100 mag, n(H2) a few 10$^{3}$ to 10$^6$ cm$^{-3}$, and Tk 10 to 30 K ranges in these clouds, avoiding protostars, HII regions, and outflows. A statistical analysis is carried out to identify general trends between different species and with physical parameters. Relations between molecules reveal strong linear correlations which define three different families: (1) 13CO and C18O; (2) H13CO+, HC18O+, H13CN, and HNC; and (3) the S-bearing molecules. The abundances of the CO isotopologs increase with the gas kinetic temperature until TK 15 K. For higher temperatures, the abundance remains constant with a scatter of a factor of 3. The abundances of H13CO+, HC18O+, H13CN, and HNC are well correlated with each other, and all of them decrease with molecular hydrogen density, following the law n(H2)$^{-0.8\pm0.2}$. The abundances of S-bearing species also decrease with n(H2) at a rate of (S-bearing/H)gas n(H2)$^{-0.6\pm0.1}$. The abundances of molecules belonging to groups 2 and 3 do not present any clear trend with gas temperature. At scales of molecular clouds, the C18O abundance is the quantity that better correlates with the cloud mass. We discuss the utility of the 13CO/C18O, HCO+/H13CO+, and H13CO+/H13CN abundance ratios as chemical diagnostics of star formation in external galaxies., Comment: 28 pages, 22 figures. CS is among the most abundant gas-phase S-bearing molecules in cold dark molecular clouds. It is easily observable with several transitions in the millimeter wavelength range, and has been widely used as a tracer of the gas density in the interstellar medium in our Galaxy and external galaxies. Chemical models fail to account for the observed CS abundances when assuming the cosmic value for the elemental abundance of sulfur. The CS+O -> CO + S reaction has been proposed as a relevant CS destruction mechanism at low temperatures, and could explain the discrepancy between models and observations. Its reaction rate has been experimentally measured at temperatures of 150-400 K, but the extrapolation to lower temperatures is doubtful. Here we calculate the CS+O reaction rate at temperatures <150 K which are prevailing in the interstellar medium. We performed ab initio calculations to obtain the three lowest PES of the CS+O system. These PESs are used to study the reaction dynamics, using several methods to eventually calculate the CS+O thermal reaction rates. We compare the results of our theoretical calculations for 150-400 K with those obtained in the laboratory. Our detailed theoretical study on the CS+O reaction, which is in agreement with the experimental data obtained at 150-400 K, demonstrates the reliability of our approach. After a careful analysis at lower temperatures, we find that the rate constant at 10 K is negligible, which is consistent with the extrapolation of experimental data using the Arrhenius expression. We use the updated chemical network to model the sulfur chemistry in TMC1 based on molecular abundances determined from GEMS project observations. In our model, we take into account the expected decrease of the cosmic ray ionization rate along the cloud. A large effort has been made to detect warm gas in the planet formation zone of circumstellar discs using space and ground-based near infrared facilities. GV Tau N, the most obscured component of the GV Tau system, is an outstanding source, being one of the first targets detected in HCN and the only one detected in CH$_4$ so far. Although near infrared observations have shed light on its chemical content, the physical structure and kinematics of the circumstellar matter remained unknown. We use interferometric images of the HCN 3-2 and $^{13}$CO 3-2 lines, and far-IR observations of $^{13}$CO, HCN, CN and H$_2$O transitions to discern the morphology, kinematics, and chemistry of the dense gas close to the star. These observations constitute the first detection of H$_2$O towards GV Tau N. Moreover, ALMA high spatial resolution (~ 7 au) images of the continuum at 1.1 mm and the HCN 3-2 line resolve different gas components towards GV Tau N, a gaseous disc with R~25 au, an ionized jet, and one (or two) molecular outflows. The asymmetric morphology of the gaseous disc shows that it has been eroded by the jet. All observations can be explained if GV Tau N is binary, and the primary component has a highly inclined individual disc relative to the circumbinary disc. We discuss the origin of the water and the other molecules emission according to this scenario. High-mass stars and star clusters commonly form within hub-filament systems. Monoceros R2, harbors one of the closest such systems, making it an excellent target for case studies. We investigate the morphology, stability and dynamical properties of the hub-filament system on basis of 13CO and C18O observations obtained with the IRAM-30m telescope and H2 column density maps derived from Herschel dust emission observations. We identified the filamentary network and characterized the individual filaments as either main (converging into the hub) or secondary (converging to a main filament) filaments. The main filaments have line masses of 30-100 Msun/pc and show signs of fragmentation. The secondary filaments have line masses of 12-60 Msun/pc and show fragmentation only sporadically. In the context of Ostriker's hydrostatic filament model, the main filaments are thermally super-critical. If non-thermal motions are included, most of them are trans-critical. Most of the secondary filaments are roughly trans-critical regardless of whether non-thermal motions are included or not. From the main filaments, we estimate a mass accretion rate of 10(-4)-10(-3) Msun/pc into the hub. The secondary filaments accrete into the main filaments with a rate of 0.1-0.4x10(-4) Msun/pc. The main filaments extend into the hub. Their velocity gradients increase towards the hub, suggesting acceleration of the gas. We estimate that with the observed infall velocity, the mass-doubling time of the hub is ~2.5 Myr, ten times larger than the free-fall time, suggesting a dynamically old region. These timescales are comparable with the chemical age of the HII region. Inside the hub, the main filaments show a ring- or a spiral-like morphology that exhibits rotation and infall motions. GEMS is an IRAM 30m Large Program whose aim is determining the elemental depletions and the ionization fraction in a set of prototypical star-forming regions. This paper presents the first results from the prototypical dark cloud TMC 1. Extensive millimeter observations have been carried out with the IRAM 30m telescope (3mm and 2mm) and the 40m Yebes telescope (1.3cm and 7mm) to determine the fractional abundances of CO, HCO+, HCN, CS, SO, HCS+, and N2H+ in three cuts which intersect the dense filament at the well-known positions TMC 1-CP, TMC 1-NH3, and TMC 1-C, covering a visual extinction range from Av~3 to ~20mag. Two phases with differentiated chemistry can be distinguished: i) the translucent envelope with molecular hydrogen densities of (1-5)x10$^3$ cm$^{-3}$; and ii) the dense phase, located at Av>10mag, with molecular hydrogen densities >10$^4$ cm$^{-3}$. Observations and modeling show that the gas phase abundances of C and O progressively decrease along the C+/C/CO transition zone where C/H~8x10$^{-5}$ and C/O~0.8-1, until the beginning of the dense phase at Av~10 mag. This is consistent with the grain temperatures being below the CO evaporation temperature in this region. In the case of sulfur, a strong depletion should occur before the translucent phase where we estimate a S/H~(0.4 - 2.2) x10$^{-6}$, an abundance ~7-40 times lower than the solar value. A second strong depletion must be present during the formation of the thick icy mantles to achieve the values of S/H measured in the dense cold cores (S/H~8x10$^{-8}$). Based on our chemical modeling, we constrain the value of $\zeta_{\rm H_2}$ to ~(0.5 - 1.8) x10$^{-16}$ s$^{-1}$ in the translucent cloud., Comment: 26 pages, 20 figures, A&A in press

To our knowledge, R Mon is the only B0 star in which a gaseous Keplerian disk has been detected. However, there is some controversy about the spectral type of R Mon. Some authors propose that it could be a later B8e star, where disks are more common. We have re-evaluated the spectral type of R Mon using the available continuum data and UVES emission lines. We used a power-law disk model to fit previous 12 CO 1-0 and 2-1 interferometric observations and the PACS CO data to investigate the disk structure. Interferometric detections of 13 CO J=1-0, HCO+ 1-0, and CN 1-0 lines using the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI) are presented. The HCN 1-0 line was not detected. Our analysis confirms that R Mon is a B0 star. The disk model compatible with the 12 CO 1-0 and 2-1 interferometric observations falls short of predicting the observed fluxes of the 1431 CO lines suggest the existence of a region empty of CO at R<20 au in the proto-planetary disk. The intense emission of the HCO+ and CN lines shows the strong influence of UV photons on gas chemistry. The observations gathered in this paper are consistent with the presence around R Mon of a transition disk with a cavity about 20 au. This size is similar to the photoevaporation radius that supports the interpretation that UV photoevaporation is main disk dispersal mechanism in massive stars, Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures, accepted in A&A

We present far-infrared observations of Monoceros R2 (a giant molecular cloud at approximately 830 pc distance, containing several sites of active star formation), as observed at 70 {\mu}m, 160 {\mu}m, 250 {\mu}m, 350 {\mu}m, and 500 {\mu}m by the Photodetector Array Camera and Spectrometer (PACS) and Spectral and Photometric Imaging Receiver (SPIRE) instruments on the Herschel Space Observatory as part of the Herschel imaging survey of OB young stellar objects (HOBYS) Key programme. The Herschel data are complemented by SCUBA-2 data in the submillimetre range, and WISE and Spitzer data in the mid-infrared. In addition, C18O data from the IRAM 30-m Telescope are presented, and used for kinematic information. Sources were extracted from the maps with getsources, and from the fluxes measured, spectral energy distributions were constructed, allowing measurements of source mass and dust temperature. Of 177 Herschel sources robustly detected in the region (a detection with high signal-to-noise and low axis ratio at multiple wavelengths), including protostars and starless cores, 29 are found in a filamentary hub at the centre of the region (a little over 1% of the observed area). These objects are on average smaller, more massive, and more luminous than those in the surrounding regions (which together suggest that they are at a later stage of evolution), a result that cannot be explained entirely by selection effects. These results suggest a picture in which the hub may have begun star formation at a point significantly earlier than the outer regions, possibly forming as a result of feedback from earlier star formation. The detection and study of molecular gas in born-again stars would be of great importance to understand their composition and chemical evolution. In addition, the molecular emission would be an invaluable tool to explore the physical conditions, kinematics and formation of asymmetric structures in the circumstellar envelopes of these evolved stars. However, until now, all attempts to detect molecular emission from the cool material around born-again stars have failed. We carried out observations using the APEX and IRAM 30m telescopes to search for molecular emission toward four well studied born-again stars, V4334 Sgr, V605 Aql, A30 and A78, that are thought to represent an evolutionary sequence. We detected for the first time emission from HCN and H$^{13}$CN molecules toward V4334 Sgr, and CO emission in V605 Aql. No molecular emission was detected above the noise level toward A30 and A78. A first estimate of the H$^{12}$CN/H$^{13}$CN abundance ratio in the circumstellar environment of V4334 Sgr is $\approx$3, which is similar to the value of the $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C ratio measured from other observations. We derived a rotational temperature of $T_{\rm rot}$=13$\pm1$ K, and a total column density of $N_{{\rm HCN}}$=1.6$\pm0.1\times$10$^{16}$ cm$^{-2}$ for V4334 Sgr. This result sets a lower limit on the amount of hydrogen that was ejected into the wind during the born-again event of this source. The CO+ reactive ion is thought to be a tracer of the boundary between a HII region and the hot molecular gas. In this study, we present the spatial distribution of the CO+ rotational emission toward the Mon R2 star-forming region. The CO+ emission presents a clumpy ring-like morphology, arising from a narrow dense layer around the HII region. We compare the CO+ distribution with other species present in photon-dominated regions (PDR), such as [CII] 158 mm, H2 S(3) rotational line at 9.3 mm, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and HCO+. We find that the CO+ emission is spatially coincident with the PAHs and [CII] emission. This confirms that the CO+ emission arises from a narrow dense layer of the HI/H2 interface. We have determined the CO+ fractional abundance, relative to C+ toward three positions. The abundances range from 0.1 to 1.9x10^(-10) and are in good agreement with previous chemical model, which predicts that the production of CO+ in PDRs only occurs in dense regions with high UV fields. The CO+ linewidth is larger than those found in molecular gas tracers, and their central velocity are blue-shifted with respect to the molecular gas velocity. Ionized regions around early-type stars are believed to be well-known objects, but until recently, our knowledge of the relation between the free-free radio emission and the IR emission has been observationally hindered by the limited angular resolution in the far-IR. The advent of Herschel has now made it possible to obtain a more precise comparison between the two regimes, and it has been found that about a third of the young HII regions emit more Lyman continuum photons than expected, thus presenting a Lyman excess. With the present study we wish to distinguish between two scenarios that have been proposed to explain the existence of the Lyman excess: (i) underestimation of the bolometric luminosity, or (ii) additional emission of Lyman-continuum photons from an accretion shock. We observed an outflow (SiO) and an infall (HCO+) tracer toward a complete sample of 200 HII regions, 67 of which present the Lyman excess. Our goal was to search for any systematic difference between sources with Lyman excess and those without. While the outflow tracer does not reveal any significant difference between the two subsamples of HII regions, the infall tracer indicates that the Lyman-excess sources are more associated with infall signposts than the other objects. Our findings indicate that the most plausible explanation for the Lyman excess is that in addition to the Lyman continuum emission from the early-type star, UV photons are emitted from accretion shocks in the stellar neighbourhood. This result suggests that high-mass stars and/or stellar clusters containing young massive stars may continue to accrete for a long time, even after the development of a compact HII region., Comment: Letter 4 pages, 3 figures and 1 table. We present interferometric observations of the CN 1-0 (113.491 GHz), N2H+ 1-0 (93.173 GHz), H(41)a (92.034 GHz), CH3CN (91.987 GHz), CS 3-2 (146.969 GHz), c-C3H2 3-2 (145.089 GHz), H2CO 2-1 (145.603 GHz) and HC3N 16-15 (145.601 GHz) lines towards M82, carried out with the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI). PDR chemical modelling is used to interpret these observations. Our results show that the abundances of N2H+, CS and H13 CO+ remain quite constant across the galaxy confirming that these species are excellent tracers of the dense molecular gas. On the contrary, the abundance of CN increases by a factor of 3 in the inner x2 bar orbits. The [CN]/[N2 H+ ] ratio is well correlated with the H(41)a emission at all spatial scales down to 100 pc. Chemical modelling shows that the variations in the [CN]/[N2H+] ratio can be explained as the consequence of differences in the local intestellar UV field and in the average cloud sizes within the nucleus of the galaxy. Our high-spatial resolution imaging of the starburst galaxy M 82 shows that the star formation activity has a strong impact on the chemistry of the molecular gas. In particular, the entire nucleus behaves as a giant photon-dominated region (PDR) whose chemistry is determined by the local UV flux. The detection of N2H+ shows the existence of a population of clouds with Av >20 mag all across the galaxy plane. These clouds constitute the molecular gas reservoir for the formation of new stars and, although distributed all along the nucleus, the highest concentration occurs in the outer x1 bar orbits (R = 280 pc)., Comment: 19 pages, 14 figures

We report the tentative detection in space of the nitrosylium ion, NO$^+$. The observations were performed towards the cold dense core Barnard 1-b. The identification of the NO$^+$ $J$=2--1 line is supported by new laboratory measurements of NO$^+$ rotational lines up to the $J$=8--7 transition (953207.189\,MHz), which leads to an improved set of molecular constants: $B_0 = 59597.1379(62)$\,MHz, $D_0 = 169.428(65)$\,kHz, and $eQq_0(\textrm{N}) = -6.72(15)$\,MHz. The profile of the feature assigned to NO$^+$ exhibits two velocity components at 6.5 and 7.5 km s$^{-1}$, with column densities of $1.5 \times 10^{12}$ and $6.5\times10^{11}$ cm$^{-2}$, respectively. New observations of NO and HNO, also reported here, allow to estimate the following abundance ratios: $X$(NO)/$X$(NO$^+$)$\simeq511$, and $X$(HNO)/$X$(NO$^+$)$\simeq1$. This latter value provides important constraints on the formation and destruction processes of HNO. The chemistry of NO$^+$ and other related nitrogen-bearing species is investigated by the means of a time-dependent gas phase model which includes an updated chemical network according to recent experimental studies. The predicted abundance for NO$^+$ and NO is found to be consistent with the observations. However, that of HNO relative to NO is too high. No satisfactory chemical paths have been found to explain the observed low abundance of HNO. HSCN and HNCS are also reported here with an abundance ratio of $\simeq1$. Finally, we have searched for NNO, NO$_2$, HNNO$^+$, and NNOH$^+$, but only upper limits have been obtained for their column density, except for the latter for which we report a tentative 3-$\sigma$ detection., Comment: To appear in the Astrophysical Journal October 20, 2014

The massive star-forming region Mon R2 hosts the closest ultra-compact HII region that can be spatially resolved with current single-dish telescopes. We used the IRAM-30m telescope to carry out an unbiased spectral survey toward two important positions (namely IF and MP2), in order to studying the chemistry of deuterated molecules toward Mon R2. We found a rich chemistry of deuterated species at both positions, with detections of C2D, DCN, DNC, DCO+, D2CO, HDCO, NH2D, and N2D+ and their corresponding hydrogenated species and isotopologs. Our high spectral resolution observations allowed us to resolve three velocity components: the component at 10 km/s is detected at both positions and seems associated with the layer most exposed to the UV radiation from IRS 1; the component at 12 km/s is found toward the IF position and seems related to the molecular gas; finally, a component at 8.5 km/s is only detected toward the MP2 position, most likely related to a low-UV irradiated PDR. We derived the column density of all the species, and determined the deuterium fractions (Dfrac). The values of Dfrac are around 0.01 for all the observed species, except for HCO+ and N2H+ which have values 10 times lower. The values found in Mon R2 are well explained with pseudo-time-dependent gas-phase model in which deuteration occurs mainly via ion-molecule reactions with H2D+, CH2D+ and C2HD+. Finally, the [H13CN]/[HN13C] ratio is very high (~11) for the 10 km/s component, which also agree with our model predictions for an age of ~0.01-0.1 Myr. The deuterium chemistry is a good tool for studying star-forming regions. The low-mass star-forming regions seem well characterized with Dfrac(N2H+) or Dfrac(HCO+), but it is required a complete chemical modeling to date massive star-forming regions, because the higher gas temperature together with the rapid evolution of massive protostars., Comment: 14 pages of manuscript, 17 pages of apendix, 7 figures in the main text, accepted for publication in A&A

Context. Monoceros R2 (Mon R2), at a distance of 830 pc, is the only ultra-compact H ii region (UC H ii) where its associated photon-dominated region (PDR) can be resolved with the Herschel Space Observatory. Aims. Our aim is to investigate observationally the kinematical patterns in the interface regions (i.e., the transition from atomic to molecular gas) associated with Mon R2. Methods. We used the HIFI instrument onboard Herschel to observe the line profiles of the reactive ions CH+, OH+ and H2O+ toward different positions in Mon R2. We derive the column density of these molecules and compare them with gas-phase chemistry models. Results. The reactive ion CH+ is detected both in emission (at central and red-shifted velocities) and in absorption (at blue-shifted velocities). OH+ is detected in absorption at both blue- and red-shifted velocities, with similar column densities. H2O+ is not detected at any of the positions, down to a rms of 40 mK toward the molecular peak. At this position, we find that the OH+ absorption originates in a mainly atomic medium, and therefore is associated with the most exposed layers of the PDR. These results are consistent with the predictions from photo-chemical models. The line profiles are consistent with the atomic gas being entrained in the ionized gas flow along the walls of the cavity of the H ii region. Based on this evidence, we are able to propose a new geometrical model for this region. Conclusions. The kinematical patterns of the OH+ and CH+ absorption indicate the existence of a layer of mainly atomic gas for which we have derived, for the first time, some physical parameters and its dynamics., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures. We report the first interstellar detection of c-C3D2. The doubly deuterated cyclopropenylidene, a carbene, has been detected toward the starless cores TMC- 1C and L1544 using the IRAM 30m telescope. The J(Ka,Kc) = 3(0,3)-2(1,2), 3(1,3)-2(0,2), and 2(2,1)-1(1,0) transitions of this species have been observed at 3 mm in both sources. The expected 1:2 intensity ratio has been found in the 3(0,3)-2(1,2) and 3(1,3)-2(0,2) lines, belonging to the para and ortho species respectively. We also observed lines of the main species, c-C3H2, the singly deuterated c-C3HD, and the species with one 13C off of the principal axis of the molecule, c-H13CC2H. The lines of c-C3D2 have been observed with high signal to noise ratio, better than 7.5 sigma in TMC-1C and 9 sigma in L1544. The abundance of doubly deuterated cyclopropenylidene with respect to the normal species is found to be (0.4 - 0.8)% in TMC-1C and (1.2 - 2.1)% in L1544. The deuteration of this small hydrocarbon ring is analysed with a comprehensive gas-grain model, the first including doubly deuterated species. The observed abundances of c-C3D2 can be explained solely by gas-phase processes, supporting the idea that c-C3H2 is a good indicator of gas-phase deuteration., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters

We study the chemistry of small hydrocarbons in the photon-dominated regions (PDRs) associated with the ultra-compact HII region Mon R2. Our goal is to determine the variations of the abundance of small hydrocarbons in a high-UV irradiated PDR and investigate their chemistry. We present an observational study of CH, CCH and c-C$_3$H$_2$ in Mon R2 combining data obtained with the IRAM 30m telescope and Herschel. We determine the column densities of these species, and compare their spatial distributions with that of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH). We compare the observational results with different chemical models to explore the relative importance of gas-phase, grain-surface and time-dependent chemistry in these environments. The emission of the small hydrocarbons show different patterns. The CCH emission is extended while CH and c-C$_3$H$_2$ are concentrated towards the more illuminated layers of the PDR. The ratio of the column densities of c-C$_3$H$_2$ and CCH shows spatial variations up to a factor of a few, increasing from $N(c-C$_3$H$_2$)/N(CCH)\approx0.004$ in the envelope to a maximum of $\sim0.015-0.029$ towards the 8$\mu$m emission peak. Comparing these results with other galactic PDRs, we find that the abundance of CCH is quite constant over a wide range of G$_0$, whereas the abundance of c-C$_3$H$_2$ is higher in low-UV PDRs. In Mon R2, the gas-phase steady-state chemistry can account relatively well for the abundances of CH and CCH in the most exposed layers of the PDR, but falls short by a factor of 10 to reproduce c-C$_3$H$_2$. In the molecular envelope, time-dependent effects and grain surface chemistry play a dominant role in determining the hydrocarbons abundances. Our study shows that CCH and c-C$_3$H$_2$ present a complex chemistry in which UV photons, grain-surface chemistry and time dependent effects contribute to determine their abundances., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures, 7 tables.
