Secure methods for identifying the host galaxies of individual massive black hole (MBH) binaries and mergers detected by gravitational wave experiments such as LISA and Pulsar Timing Arrays are currently lacking, but will be critical to a variety of science goals. Recently in Bardati et al. (2024, Paper I), we used the Romulus25 cosmological simulation to show that MBH merger host galaxies have unique morphologies in imaging, due to their stronger bulges. Here, we use the same sample of simulated MBH merger host galaxies to investigate their stellar kinematics, as probed by optical integral field unit (IFU) spectroscopy. We perform stellar population synthesis and dust radiative transfer to generate synthetic 3D optical spectral datacubes of each simulated galaxy, and produce mock stellar kinematic maps. Based on a linear discriminant analysis of a combination of kinematic parameters derived from these maps, we show that this approach can identify MBH binary and merger host galaxies with accuracies that increase with chirp mass and mass ratio. For mergers with high chirp masses (>10^8.2 Msun) and high mass ratios (>0.5), the accuracies reach >85%, and their host galaxies are uniquely characterized by slower rotation and stronger stellar kinematic misalignments. These kinematic properties are commonly associated with massive early-type galaxies that have experienced major mergers, and naturally act as signposts for MBH binaries and mergers with high chirp masses and mass ratios. These results suggest that IFU spectroscopy should also play a role in telescope follow-up of future MBH binaries and mergers detected in gravitational waves, Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures. The formation and evolution of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) remains an open question in the field of modern cosmology. The detection of nanohertz (n-Hz) gravitational waves via pulsar timing arrays (PTAs) in the form of individual events and the stochastic gravitational wave background (SGWB) offers a promising avenue for studying SMBH evolution across cosmic time, with SGWB signal being the immediately detectable signal with the currently accessible telescope sensitivities. By connecting the galaxy properties in the large scale (Gpc scale) cosmological simulation such as \texttt{MICECAT} with the small scale ($\sim$ Mpc scale) galaxy simulations from \texttt{ROMULUS}, we show that different scenarios of galaxy-SMBH evolution with redshift leads to a frequency-dependent spatial anisotropy in the SGWB signal. The presence of slow evolution of the SMBHs in the Universe leads to a pronounced blue anisotropic spectrum of the SGWB. In contrast, if SMBHs grow faster in the Universe in lighter galaxies, the frequency-dependent spatial anisotropy exhibits a more flattened anisotropic spectrum. This additional aspect of the SGWB signal on top of the monopole SGWB signal, can give insight on how the SMBHs form in the high redshift Universe and its interplay with the galaxy formation from future measurements., Comment: 17 pages, 11 figures

The presence of dual active galactic nuclei (AGN) on scales of a few tens of kpc can be used to study merger-induced accretion on supermassive black holes (SMBHs) and offer insights about SMBH mergers, using dual AGNs as merger precursors. This study uses the {\sc Romulus25} cosmological simulation to investigate the properties and evolution of dual AGNs. We first analyze the properties of AGNs ($L_{bol} > 10^{43} \rm $ erg s$^{-1}$) and their neighboring SMBHs (any SMBHs closer than 30 pkpc to an AGN) at $z \leq 2$. This is our underlying population. We then applied the luminosity threshold of $L_{bol} > 10^{43} $ erg s$^{-1}$ to the neighboring SMBHs thereby identifying dual and multiple AGNs. Our findings indicate an increase in the number of both single and dual AGNs from lower to higher redshifts. We also find that the number of dual AGNs with separations of 0.5-4 kpc is twice the number of duals with separations of 4-30 kpc. All dual AGNs in our sample resulted from major mergers. Compared to single AGNs, duals have a lower black hole-to-halo mass ratio. We found that the properties of dual AGN host halos, including halo mass, stellar mass, star formation rate (SFR), and gas mass, are generally consistent with those of single AGN halos, albeit tending towards the higher end of their respective property ranges. Our analysis uncovered a diverse array of evolutionary patterns among dual AGNs, including rapidly evolving systems, slower ones, and instances where SMBH mergers are ineffective.

The formation of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in the Universe and its role in the properties of the galaxies is one of the open questions in astrophysics and cosmology. Though, traditionally, electromagnetic waves have been instrumental in direct measurements of SMBHs, significantly influencing our comprehension of galaxy formation, gravitational waves (GW) bring an independent avenue to detect numerous binary SMBHs in the observable Universe in the nano-Hertz range using the pulsar timing array observation. This brings a new way to understand the connection between the formation of binary SMBHs and galaxy formation if we can connect theoretical models with multi-messenger observations namely GW data and galaxy surveys. Along these lines, we present here the first paper on this series based on {\sc Romulus25} cosmological simulation on the properties of the host galaxies of SMBHs and propose on how this can be used to connect with observations of nano-Hertz GW signal and galaxy surveys. We show that the most dominant contribution to the background will arise from sources with high chirp masses which are likely to reside in low redshift early-type galaxies with high stellar mass, largely old stellar population, and low star formation rate, and that reside at centers of galaxy groups and manifest evidence of recent mergers. The masses of the sources show a correlation with the halo mass and stellar mass of the host galaxies. For a pair of supermassive black holes (SMBHs) in the remnant of a dual galaxy merger, well-known models exist to describe their dynamical evolution until the final coalescence accompanied by the emission of a low-frequency gravitational wave (GW) signal. In this article, we investigate the dynamical evolution of three SMBH triple systems recovered from the ROMULUS25 cosmological simulation to explore common dynamical evolution patterns and assess typical coalescence times. For this purpose, we construct initial conditions from the ROMULUS25 data and perform high-resolution gravitodynamical \N-body simulations. We track the orbital evolution from the galactic inspiral to the formation of hard binaries at sub-parsec separation and use the observed hardening rates to project the time of coalescence. In all cases, the two heaviest black holes form an efficiently hardening binary that merges within fractions of the Hubble time. The lightest SMBH either gets ejected, forms a stable hierarchical triple system with the heavier binary, forms a hardening binary with the previously merged binary's remnant, or remains on a wide galactic orbit. The coalescence times of the lighter black holes are thus significantly longer than for the heavier binary, as they experience lower dynamical friction and stellar hardening rates. Low-frequency gravitational wave experiments such as the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna and pulsar timing arrays are expected to detect individual massive black hole (MBH) binaries and mergers. However, secure methods of identifying the exact host galaxy of each MBH merger amongst the large number of galaxies in the gravitational wave localization region are currently lacking. We investigate the distinct morphological signatures of MBH merger host galaxies, using the Romulus25 cosmological simulation. We produce mock telescope images of 201 simulated galaxies in Romulus25 hosting recent MBH mergers, through stellar population synthesis and dust radiative transfer. Based on comparisons to mass- and redshift-matched control samples, we show that combining multiple morphological statistics via a linear discriminant analysis enables identification of the host galaxies of MBH mergers, with accuracies that increase with chirp mass and mass ratio. For mergers with high chirp masses (>10^8.2 Msun) and high mass ratios (>0.5), the accuracy of this approach reaches >80%, and does not decline for at least >1 Gyr after numerical merger. We argue that these trends arise because the most distinctive morphological characteristics of MBH merger and binary host galaxies are prominent classical bulges, rather than relatively short-lived morphological disturbances from their preceding galaxy mergers. Since these bulges are formed though major mergers of massive galaxies, they lead to (and become permanent signposts for) MBH binaries and mergers that have high chirp masses and mass ratios. The occupation fraction of massive black holes (MBHs) in dwarf galaxies offers interesting insights into initial black hole seeding mechanisms and their mass assembly history, though disentangling these two effects remains challenging. Using the {\sc Romulus} cosmological simulations we examine the impact of environment on the occupation fraction of MBHs in low mass galaxies. Unlike most modern cosmological simulations, {\sc Romulus} seeds MBHs based on local gas properties, selecting dense ($n>3$ cm$^{-3}$), pristine ($Z<3e-4Z_{\odot}$), and rapidly collapsing regions in the early Universe as sites to host MBHs without assuming anything about MBH occupation as a function of galaxy stellar mass, or halo mass, {\it a priori}. The simulations predict that dwarf galaxies with M$_{\star}<10^9$ M$_{\odot}$ in cluster environments are $\sim2$ times more likely to host a MBH compared to those in the field. The predicted occupation fractions are remarkably consistent with those of nuclear star clusters. Across cluster and field environments, dwarf galaxies with earlier formation times are more likely to host a MBH. While the MBH occupation function is similar between cluster and field environments at high redshift ($z>3$), a difference arises as late-forming dwarfs -- which do not exist in the cluster environment -- begin to dominate in the field and pull the MBH occupation fraction down for low mass galaxies. Additionally, prior to in-fall some cluster dwarfs are similar to progenitors of massive, isolated galaxies, indicating that they might have grown to higher masses had they not been impeded by the cluster environment. The interaction between supermassive black hole (SMBH) feedback and the circumgalactic medium (CGM) continues to be an open question in galaxy evolution. In our study, we use SPH simulations to explore the impact of SMBH feedback on galactic metal retention and the motion of metals and gas into and through the CGM of L$_{*}$ galaxies. We examine 140 galaxies from the 25 Mpc cosmological volume, Romulus25, with stellar masses between 3 $\times$ 10$^{9}$ - 3 $\times$ 10$^{11}$ M$_{\odot}$. We measure the fraction of metals remaining in the ISM and CGM of each galaxy, and calculate the expected mass of its SMBH based on the $M-\sigma$ relation. The deviation of each SMBH from its expected mass, $\Delta M_{BH}$ is compared to the potential of its host via $\sigma$. We find that SMBHs with accreted mass above the empirical $M-\sigma$ relation are about 15\% more effective at removing metals from the ISM than under-massive SMBHs in star forming galaxies. Over-massive SMBHs suppress the overall star formation of their host galaxies and more effectively move metals from the ISM into the CGM. However, we see little evidence for the evacuation of gas from their halos, in contrast with other simulations. Finally, we predict that C IV column densities in the CGM of L$_{*}$ galaxies may depend on host galaxy SMBH mass. Using high-resolution {\sc Romulus} simulations, we explore the origin and evolution of the circumgalactic medium (CGM) in the region 0.1 $\leq \mathrm{R}/\mathrm{R}_\mathrm{500} \leq$ 1 around massive central galaxies in group-scale halos. We find that the CGM is multiphase and highly dynamic. Investigating the dynamics, we identify seven patterns of evolution. We show that these are robust and detected consistently across various conditions. The gas cools via two pathways: (1) filamentary cooling inflows and (2) condensations forming from rapidly cooling density perturbations. In our cosmological simulations, the perturbations are mainly seeded by orbiting substructures. The condensations can form even when the median $t_\mathrm{cool} / t_\mathrm{ff}$ of the X-ray emitting gas is above 10 or 20. Strong amplitude perturbations can provoke runaway cooling regardless of the state of the background gas. We also find perturbations whose local $t_\mathrm{cool} / t_\mathrm{ff}$ ratios drop below the threshold but which do not condense. Rather, the ratios fall to some minimum value and then bounce. These are weak perturbations that are temporarily swept up in satellite wakes and carried to larger radii. Their $t_\mathrm{cool} / t_\mathrm{ff}$ ratios decrease because $t_\mathrm{ff}$ is increasing, not because $t_\mathrm{cool}$ is decreasing. For structures forming hierarchically, our study highlights the challenge of using a simple threshold argument to infer the CGM's evolution. It also highlights that the median hot gas properties are suboptimal determinants of the CGM's state and dynamics. We study satellite counts and quenched fractions for satellites of Milky Way analogs in Romulus25, a large-volume cosmological hydrodynamic simulation. Depending on the definition of a Milky Way analog, we have between 66 and 97 Milky Way analogs in Romulus25, a 25 Mpc per-side uniform volume simulation. We use these analogs to quantify the effect of environment and host properties on satellite populations. We find that the number of satellites hosted by a Milky Way analog increases predominantly with host stellar mass, while environment, as measured by the distance to a Milky Way-mass or larger halo, may have a notable impact in high isolation. Similarly, we find that the satellite quenched fraction for our analogs also increases with host stellar mass, and potentially in higher-density environments. These results are robust for analogs within 3 Mpc of another Milky Way-mass or larger halo, the environmental parameter space where the bulk of our sample resides. We place these results in the context of observations through comparisons to the Exploration of Local VolumE Satellites and Satellites Around Galactic Analogs surveys. Our results are robust to changes in Milky Way analog selection criteria, including those that mimic observations. Finally, as our samples naturally include Milky Way-Andromeda pairs, we examine quenched fractions in pairs vs isolated systems. We find potential evidence, though not conclusive, that pairs, defined as being within 1 Mpc of another Milky Way-mass or larger halo, may have higher satellite quenched fractions.

In the near future, projects like LISA and Pulsar Timing Arrays are expected to detect gravitational waves from mergers between supermassive black holes, and it is crucial to precisely model the underlying merger populations now to maximize what we can learn from this new data. Here we characterize expected high-redshift (z > 2) black hole mergers using the very large volume Astrid cosmological simulation, which uses a range of seed masses to probe down to low-mass BHs, and directly incorporates dynamical friction so as to accurately model the dynamical processes which bring black holes to the galaxy center where binary formation and coalescence will occur. The black hole populations in Astrid include black holes down to 10$^{4.5}$ M$_\odot$, and remain broadly consistent with the TNG simulations at scales > 10$^6$ M$_\odot$ (the seed mass used in TNG). By resolving lower-mass black holes, the overall merger rate is ~5x higher than in TNG. However, incorporating dynamical friction delays mergers compared to a recentering scheme, reducing the high-z merger rate mass-matched mergers by a factor of ~2x. We also calculate the expected LISA Signal-to-Noise values, and show that the distribution peaks at high SNR (>100), emphasizing the importance of implementing a seed mass well below LISA's peak sensitivity (10$^6$ M$_\odot$) to resolve the majority of LISA's GW detections., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We examine the quenching characteristics of $328$ isolated dwarf galaxies $\left(10^{8} < M_{\rm star}/M_\odot < 10^{10} \right)$ within the \Rom{} cosmological hydrodynamic simulation. Using mock observation methods, we identify isolated dwarf galaxies with quenched star formation and make direct comparisons to the quenched fraction in the NASA Sloan Atlas (NSA). Similar to other cosmological simulations, we find a population of quenched, isolated dwarf galaxies below $M_{\rm star} < 10^{9} M_\odot$ not detected within the NSA. We find that the presence of massive black holes (MBHs) in \Rom{} is largely responsible for the quenched, isolated dwarfs, while isolated dwarfs without an MBH are consistent with quiescent fractions observed in the field. Quenching occurs between $z=0.5-1$, during which the available supply of star-forming gas is heated or evacuated by MBH feedback. Mergers or interactions seem to play little to no role in triggering the MBH feedback. At low stellar masses, $M_{\rm star} \lesssim 10^{9.3} M_\odot$, quenching proceeds across several Gyr as the MBH slowly heats up gas in the central regions. At higher stellar masses, $M_{\rm star} \gtrsim 10^{9.3} M_\odot$, quenching occurs rapidly within $1$ Gyr, with the MBH evacuating gas from the central few kpc of the galaxy and driving it to the outskirts of the halo. Our results indicate the possibility of substantial star formation suppression via MBH feedback within dwarf galaxies in the field. On the other hand, the apparent over-quenching of dwarf galaxies due to MBH suggests higher resolution and/or better modeling is required for MBHs in dwarfs, and quenched fractions offer the opportunity to constrain current models., Comment: 23 pages, 11 figures; submitted to ApJ

Massive black holes in the centers of galaxies today must have grown by several orders of magnitude from seed black holes formed at early times. Detecting a population of intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs) can provide constraints on these elusive BH seeds. Here we use the large volume, cosmological hydrodynamical simulation Astrid, which includes IMBH seeds and dynamical friction to investigate the population of IMBH seeds. Dynamical friction is largely inefficient at sinking and merging seed IMBHs at high-z. This leads to an extensive population (several hundred per galaxy) of wandering IMBHs in large halos at z~2. A small fraction of these IMBHs are detectable as HLXs, Hyper Luminous X-ray sources. Importantly, at z ~ 2, IMBHs mergers produce the peak of GW events. We find close to a million GW events in Astrid between z=2-3 involving seed IMBH mergers. These GW events (almost all detectable by LISA) at cosmic noon should provide strong constraints on IMBH seed models and their formation mechanisms. At the center of massive galaxies, where the number of IMBHs can be as high as 10-100, SMBH-IMBH pairs can form. These Intermediate mass ratio inspirals (IMRIs) and extreme mass ratio inspirals (EMRIs), will require the next generation of milli-muHz space-based GW interferometers to be detected. Large populations of IMBHs around massive black holes will probe their environments and MBH causal structure.

We examine the dual (both BHs active) and offset (one BH active) AGN population (comprising $\sim$ 2000 pairs at $0.5\,\text{kpc}\lesssim\Delta r<30\,\text{kpc}$) at $z=2\sim3$ in the ASTRID simulation covering (360 cMpc)${^3}$. The dual (offset) AGN make up $3.0(2.2)\%$ of all AGN at $z=2$. The dual fraction is roughly constant while the offset fraction increases by a factor of ten from $z=4\sim2$. Compared with the full AGN population, duals are characterized by a low $M_\text{BH}/M_*$ ratio, a high specific star-formation rate (sSFR) of $\sim 1\,\text{Gyr}^{-1}$, and a high Eddington ratio ($\sim 0.05$, double that of single AGN). The dual AGN are formed in major galaxy mergers (typically involving $M_\text{halo}<10^{13}\,M_\odot$), with BHs that have similar masses. At small separations (when their host galaxies are in the late phase of the merger) duals become $2\sim8$ times brighter (albeit more obscured) than at larger separations. $80\%$ of these bright, close duals merge in the simulation within $\sim500\,\text{Myrs}$. Notably, the initially less-massive BH in duals frequently becomes the brighter AGN during the galaxy merger. In offset AGN, the active BH is typically $\gtrsim 10$ times more massive than its non-active counterpart and than most BHs in duals. Offsets are predominantly formed in minor galaxy mergers with the active BH residing in the center of massive halos ($ M_\text{ halo}\sim 10^{13-14}\,M_\odot$). In these deep potentials, gas stripping is common and the secondary quickly deactivates. The stripping also leads to inefficient orbital decay amongst offsets, which stall at $\Delta r\sim5\,\text{kpc}$ for a few hundred Myrs., Comment: 17 Pages, 18 Figures; comments welcome!

We explore the characteristics of actively accreting MBHs within dwarf galaxies in the \textsc{Romulus25} cosmological hydrodynamic simulation. We examine the MBH occupation fraction, x-ray active fractions, and AGN scaling relations within dwarf galaxies of stellar mass $10^{8} < M_{\rm star} < 10^{10} M_\odot$ out to redshift $z=2$. In the local universe, the MBH occupation fraction is consistent with observed constraints, dropping below unity at $M_{\rm star} < 3\times10^{10} M_{\odot}$, $M_{\rm 200} < 3\times10^{11} M_\odot$. Local dwarf AGN in \textsc{Romulus25} follow observed scaling relations between AGN x-ray luminosity, stellar mass, and star formation rate, though they exhibit slightly higher active fractions and number densities than comparable x-ray observations. Since $z=2$, the MBH occupation fraction has decreased, the population of dwarf AGN has become overall less luminous, and as a result, the overall number density of dwarf AGN has diminished. We predict the existence of a large population of MBHs in the local universe with low x-ray luminosities and high contamination from x-ray binaries and the hot interstellar medium that are undetectable by current x-ray surveys. These hidden MBHs make up $76\%$ of all MBHs in local dwarf galaxies, and include many MBHs that are undermassive relative to their host galaxy's stellar mass. Their detection relies not only on greater instrument sensitivity but on better modeling of x-ray contaminants or multi-wavelength surveys. Our results indicate dwarf AGN were substantially more active in the past despite being low-luminosity today, and indicate future deep x-ray surveys may uncover many hidden MBHs in dwarf galaxies out to at least $z=2$.

Contrary to many stereotypes about massive galaxies, observed brightest group galaxies (BGGs) are diverse in their star formation rates, kinematic properties, and morphologies. Studying how they evolve into and express such diverse characteristics is an important piece of the galaxy formation puzzle. We use a high-resolution cosmological suite of simulations Romulus and compare simulated central galaxies in group-scale halos at $z=0$ to observed BGGs. The comparison encompasses the stellar mass-halo mass relation, various kinematic properties and scaling relations, morphologies, and the star formation rates. Generally, we find that Romulus reproduces the full spectrum of diversity in the properties of the BGGs very well, albeit with a tendency toward lower than the observed fraction of quenched BGGs. We find both early-type S0 and elliptical galaxies as well as late-type disk galaxies; we find Romulus galaxies that are fast-rotators as well as slow-rotators; and we observe galaxies transforming from late-type to early-type following strong dynamical interactions with satellites. We also carry out case studies of selected Romulus galaxies to explore the link between their properties, and the recent evolution of the stellar system as well as the surrounding intragroup/circumgalactic medium. In general, mergers/strong interactions quench star-forming activity and disrupt the stellar disk structure. Sometimes, however, such interactions can also trigger star-formation and galaxy rejuvenation. We examine massive black hole (MBH) mergers and their associated gravitational wave signals from the large-volume cosmological simulation Astrid. Astrid includes galaxy formation and black hole models recently updated with a MBH seed population between $3\times 10^4M_{\odot}/h$ and $3\times 10^5M_{\odot}/h$ and a sub-grid dynamical friction (DF) model to follow the MBH dynamics down to $1.5\;\text{ckpc}/h$. We calculate initial eccentricities of MBH orbits directly from the simulation at kpc-scales, and find orbital eccentricities above $0.7$ for most MBH pairs before the numerical merger. After approximating unresolved evolution on scales below ${\sim 200\,\text{pc}}$, we find that the in-simulation DF on large scales accounts for more than half of the total orbital decay time ($\sim 500\,\text{Myrs}$) due to DF. The binary hardening time is an order of magnitude longer than the DF time, especially for the seed-mass binaries ($M_\text{BH}<2M_\text{seed}$). As a result, only $\lesssim20\%$ of seed MBH pairs merge at $z>3$ after considering both unresolved DF evolution and binary hardening. These $z>3$ seed-mass mergers are hosted in a biased population of galaxies with the highest stellar masses of $>10^9\,M_\odot$. With the higher initial eccentricity prediction from Astrid, we estimate an expected merger rate of $0.3-0.7$ per year from the $z>3$ MBH population. This is a factor of $\sim 7$ higher than the prediction using the circular orbit assumption. The LISA events are expected at a similar rate, and comprise $\gtrsim 60\%$ seed-seed mergers, $\sim 30\%$ involving only one seed-mass MBH, and $\sim 10\%$ mergers of non-seed MBHs., Comment: 17 pages, 13 Figures; comments are welcome

The occurrence of dual active galactic nuclei (AGN) on scales of a few tens of kpc can be used to study merger-induced accretion on massive black holes (MBHs) and to derive clues on MBH mergers, using dual AGN as a parent population of precursors. We investigate the properties of dual AGN in the cosmological simulation Horizon-AGN. We create catalogs of dual AGN selected with distance and luminosity criteria, plus sub-catalogs where further mass cuts are applied. We divide the sample into dual AGN hosted in different galaxies, on the way to a merger, and into those hosted in one galaxy, after the galaxy merger has happened. We find that the relation between MBH and galaxy mass is similar to that of general AGN population and we compare the properties of dual AGN also with a control sample, discussing differences and similarities in masses and Eddington ratios. The typical mass ratio of galaxy mergers associated to dual AGN is 0.2, with mass loss in the smaller galaxy decreasing the mass ratio as the merger progresses. Between 30 and 80 per cent of dual AGN with separations between 4 and 30~kpc can be matched to an ensuing MBH merger. The dual AGN fraction increases with redshift and with separation threshold, although above 50~kpc the increase of multiple AGN limits that of duals. We present the evolution of black holes (BHs) and their relationship with their host galaxies in Astrid, a large-volume cosmological hydrodynamical simulation with box size 250 $h^{-1} \rm Mpc$ containing $2\times5500^3$ particles evolved to z=3. Astrid statistically models BH gas accretion and AGN feedback to their environments, applies a power-law distribution for BH seed mass $M_{\rm sd}$, uses a dynamical friction model for BH dynamics and executes a physical treatment of BH mergers. The BH population is broadly consistent with empirical constraints on the BH mass function, the bright end of the luminosity functions, and the time evolution of BH mass and accretion rate density. The BH mass and accretion exhibit a tight correlation with host stellar mass and star formation rate. We trace BHs seeded before z>10 down to z=3, finding that BHs carry virtually no imprint of the initial $M_{\rm sd}$ except those with the smallest $M_{\rm sd}$, where less than 50\% of them have doubled in mass. Gas accretion is the dominant channel for BH growth compared to BH mergers. With dynamical friction, Astrid predicts a significant delay for BH mergers after the first encounter of a BH pair, with a typical elapse time of about 200 Myrs. There are in total $4.5 \times 10^5$ BH mergers in Astrid at z>3, $\sim 10^3$ of which have X-ray detectable EM counterparts: a bright kpc scale dual AGN with $L_X>10^{43}$ erg/s. BHs with $M_{\rm BH} \sim 10^{7-8} M_{\odot}$ experience the most frequent mergers. Galaxies that host BH mergers are unbiased tracers of the overall $M_{\rm BH} - M_{*}$ relation. While most galaxies appear to host a central supermassive black hole (SMBH), they are expected to also contain a substantial population of off-center "wandering" SMBHs naturally produced by the hierarchical merger-driven process of galaxy assembly. This population has been recently characterized in an analysis of the Romulus cosmological simulations, which correct for the dynamical forces on SMBHs without artificially pinning them to halo centers. Here we predict an array of electromagnetic signatures for these wanderers. The predicted wandering population of SMBHs from Romulus broadly reproduces the observed spatial offsets of a recent sample of hyperluminous X-ray sources. We predict that the sources with the most extreme offsets are likely to arise from SMBHs within satellite galaxies. These simulations also predict a significant population of secondary active galactic nuclei (AGN) with luminosities at least 10\% that of the central AGN. The majority of galaxies at $z=4$ that host a central AGN with bolometric luminosity $L_\mathrm{bol}>10^{42} \ \mathrm{erg} \; \mathrm{s}^{-1}$ are predicted to host a companion off-center AGN of comparable brightness. We demonstrate that stacked X-ray observations of similar mass galaxies may reveal a halo of collective emission attributable to these wanderers. Finally, because wanderers dominate the population of SMBHs with masses of $\lesssim 10^7\,M_{\odot}$ in Romulus, they may dominate tidal disruption event (TDE) rates at these masses if they retain a stellar component (e.g. a nuclear star cluster). We use hydrodynamical simulations of two Milky Way-mass galaxies to demonstrate the impact of cosmic-ray pressure on the kinematics of cool and warm circumgalactic gas. Consistent with previous studies, we find that cosmic-ray pressure can dominate over thermal pressure in the inner 50 kpc of the circumgalactic medium (CGM), creating an overall cooler CGM than that of similar galaxy simulations run without cosmic rays. We generate synthetic sightlines of the simulated galaxies' CGM and use Voigt profile fitting methods to extract ion column densities, Doppler-b parameters, and velocity centroids of individual absorbers. We directly compare these synthetic spectral line fits with HST/COS CGM absorption-line data analyses, which tend to show that metallic species with a wide range of ionization potential energies are often kinematically aligned. Compared to the Milky-Way simulation run without cosmic rays, the presence of cosmic-ray pressure in the inner CGM creates narrower OVI absorption features and broader SiIII absorption features, a quality which is more consistent with observational data. Additionally, because the cool gas is buoyant due to nonthermal cosmic-ray pressure support, the velocity centroids of both cool and warm gas tend to align in the simulated Milky Way with feedback from cosmic rays. In this work we establish and test methods for implementing dynamical friction for massive black hole pairs that form in large volume cosmological hydrodynamical simulations which include galaxy formation and black hole growth. We verify our models and parameters both for individual black hole dynamics and for the black hole population in cosmological volumes. Using our model of dynamical friction (DF) from collisionless particles, black holes can effectively sink close to the galaxy center, provided that the black hole's dynamical mass is at least twice that of the lowest mass resolution particles in the simulation. Gas drag also plays a role in assisting the black holes' orbital decay, but it is typically less effective than that from collisionless particles, especially after the first billion years of the black hole's evolution. DF from gas becomes less than $1\%$ of DF from collisionless particles for BH masses $> 10^{7}$ M$_{\odot}$. Using our best DF model, we calculate the merger rate down to $z=1.1$ using an $L_{\rm box}=35$ Mpc$/h$ simulation box. We predict $\sim 2$ mergers per year for $z>1.1$ peaking at $z\sim 2$. These merger rates are within the range obtained in previous work using similar-resolution hydro-dynamical simulations. We show that the rate is enhanced by factor of $\sim 2$ when DF is taken into account in the simulations compared to the no-DF run. We characterise the population of wandering black holes, defined as those physically offset from their halo centres, in the Romulus cosmological simulations. Unlike most other currently available cosmological simulations, black holes are seeded based on local gas properties and are permitted to evolve dynamically without being fixed at halo centres. Tracking these black holes allows us to make robust predictions about the offset population. We find that the number of wandering black holes scales roughly linearly with the halo mass, such that we expect thousands of wandering black holes in galaxy cluster halos. Locally, these wanderers account for around 10 per cent of the local black hole mass budget once seed masses are accounted for. Yet for higher redshifts ($z\gtrsim 4$), wandering black holes both outweigh and outshine their central supermassive counterparts. Most wandering black holes, we find, remain close to the seed mass and originate from the centres of previously disrupted satellite galaxies. While most do not retain a resolved stellar counterpart, those that do are situated farther out at larger fractions of the virial radius. Wanderers with higher luminosities are preferentially at lower radius, more massive, and either closer to their host's mid-planes or associated with a stellar overdensity. Massive black holes often exist within dwarf galaxies, and both simulations and observations have shown that a substantial fraction of these may be off-center with respect to their hosts. We trace the evolution of off-center massive black holes (MBHs) in dwarf galaxies using cosmological hydrodynamical simulations, and show that the reason for off-center locations is mainly due to galaxy-galaxy mergers. We calculate dynamical timescales and show that off-center MBHs are unlikely to sink to their galaxys' centers within a Hubble time, due to the shape of the hosts' potential wells and low stellar densities. These wandering MBHs are unlikely to be detected electromagnetically, nor is there a measurable dynamical effect on the galaxy's stellar population. We conclude that off-center MBHs may be common in dwarfs, especially if the mass of the MBH is small or the stellar mass of the host galaxy is large. Using the N-body+Smoothed particle hydrodynamics code, ChaNGa, we identify two merger-driven processes\textemdash disk disruption and supermassive black hole (SMBH) feedback\textemdash which work together to quench L$^*$ galaxies for over 7 Gyr. Specifically, we examine the cessation of star formation in a simulated Milky Way (MW) analog, driven by an interaction with two minor satellites. Both interactions occur within $\sim$100 Myr of each other, and the satellites both have masses 5 to 20 times smaller than that of their MW-like host galaxy. Using the genetic modification process of \cite{Roth2016}, we generate a set of four zoom-in, MW-mass galaxies all of which exhibit unique star formation histories due to small changes to their assembly histories. In two of these four cases, the galaxy is quenched by $z = 1$. Because these are controlled modifications, we are able to isolate the effects of two closely-spaced minor merger events, the relative timing of which determines whether the MW-mass main galaxy quenches. This one-two punch works to: 1. fuel the primary halo's supermassive black hole (SMBH) at its peak accretion rate; and 2. disrupt the cold, gaseous disk of the host galaxy. The end result is that feedback from the SMBH thoroughly and abruptly ends the galaxy's star formation by $z\approx1$. We search for and find a similar quenching event in {\sc Romulus25}, a hydrodynamical $(25\,\mathrm{Mpc})^3$ volume simulation, demonstrating that the mechanism is common enough to occur even in a small sample of MW-mass quenched galaxies at $z=0$., Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, accepted to ApJ

To investigate the origin of elevated globular cluster abundances observed around Ultra-Diffuse Galaxies (UDGs), we simulate globular cluster populations hosted by UDGs formed through tidal heating. Specifically, globular cluster (GC) formation is modeled as occurring in regions of dense star formation. Because star-formation-rate-densities are higher at high redshift, dwarf galaxies in massive galaxy clusters, which formed most of their stars at high redshift, form a large fraction of their stars in globular clusters. Given that UDGs formed through environmental processes are more likely to be accreted at high redshift, these systems have more GCs than non-UDGs. In particular, our model predicts that massive UDGs have twice the GC mass of non-UDGs of similar stellar mass, in rough agreement with observations. Although this effect is somewhat diminished by GC disruption, we find that the relationship between GC mass fraction and cluster-centric distance, and the relationship between GC mass fraction and galaxy half-light radius are remarkably similar to observations. Among our model objects, both UDGs and non-UDGs present a correlation between halo mass and GC mass, although UDGs have lower dynamical masses at a given GC mass. Furthermore, because of the effectiveness of GC disruption, we predict that GCs around UDGs should have a more top heavy mass function than GCs around non-UDGs. We present results from the "Mint" resolution DC Justice League suite of Milky Way-like zoom-in cosmological simulations, which extend our study of nearby galaxies down into the ultra-faint dwarf (UFD) regime for the first time. The mass resolution of these simulations is the highest ever published for cosmological Milky Way zoom-in simulations run to $z=0$, with initial star (dark matter) particle masses of 994 (17900) M$_\odot$, and a force resolution of 87 pc. We study the surrounding dwarfs and UFDs, and find the simulations match the observed dynamical properties of galaxies with $-3 < M_V < -19$, and reproduce the scatter seen in the size-luminosity plane for $r_h\gtrsim200$ pc. We predict the vast majority of nearby galaxies will be observable by the Vera Rubin Observatory's co-added Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). We additionally show that faint dwarfs with velocity dispersions $\lesssim5$ km/s result from severe tidal stripping of the host halo. We investigate the quenching of UFDs in a hydrodynamical Milky Way context, and find that the majority of UFDs are quenched prior to interactions with the Milky Way, though some of the quenched UFDs retain their gas until infall. We revisit the predictions for the merger rate of massive black hole binaries detectable by the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) and their background signal for pulsar-timing arrays. We focus on the effect of the delays between the merger of galaxies and the final coalescence of black hole binaries, and on supernova feedback on the black hole growth. By utilizing a semi-analytic galaxy formation model, not only do we account for the driving the evolution of binaries at separations $\lesssim 1$ pc (gas-driven migration, stellar hardening and triple/quadruple massive black hole systems), but we also improve on previous studies by accounting for the time spent by black hole pairs from kpc down to pc separation. We also include the effect of supernova feedback, which may eject gas from the nuclear region of low-mass galaxies, thus hampering the growth of black holes via accretion and suppressing their orbital migration in circumbinary disks. Despite including these novel physical effects, we predict that the LISA detection rate should still be $\gtrsim 2 \mbox{yr}^{-1}$, irrespective of the model for the black hole seeds at high redshifts. Scenarios where black holes form from $\sim100 M_\odot$ seeds are more significantly impacted by supernova feedback. We also find that for detectable events, the merging black holes typically have mass ratios between $\sim 0.1$ and $1$. Predictions for the stochastic background in the band of pulsar-timing array experiments are instead rather robust, and show only a mild dependence on the model., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures and 2 tables. We use the \textsc{Romulus25} cosmological simulation volume to identify the largest-ever simulated sample of {\it field} ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs). At $z=0$, we find that isolated UDGs have average star formation rates, colors, and virial masses for their stellar masses and environment. UDGs have moderately elevated HI masses, being 70\% (300\%) more HI-rich than typical isolated dwarf galaxies at luminosities brighter (fainter) than M$_\mathrm{B}$=-14. However, UDGs are consistent with the general isolated dwarf galaxy population and make up $\sim$20\% of all field galaxies with 10$^7$

Using cosmological hydrodynamic simulations with physically motivated models of super-massive black hole (SMBH) formation and growth, we compare the assembly of Milky Way-mass ( $M_{\mathrm{vir}} \approx 7 \times 10^{11}$ $M_{\odot}$ at $z = 0$) galaxies in cold dark matter (CDM) and self-interacting dark matter (SIDM) models. Our SIDM model adopts a constant cross-section of 1 cm$^2$/g. We find that SMBH formation is suppressed in the early universe due to SIDM coring. SMBH-SMBH mergers are also suppressed in SIDM as a consequence of the lower number of SMBHs formed. Lack of initial merger-driven SMBH growth in turn delays SMBH growth by billions of years in SIDM compared to CDM. Further, we find that this delayed growth suppresses SMBH accretion in the largest progenitors of the main SIDM galaxies during the first 5 Gyrs of their evolution. Nonetheless, by $z = 0.8$ the CDM and SIDM SMBH masses differ only by around 0.2 dex, so that both remain compatible with the $M_{BH}-M_{*}$ relation. We show that the reduced accretion causes the SIDM SMBHs to less aggressively regulate star formation in their host galaxies than their CDM counterparts, resulting in a factor of 3 or more stars being produced over the lifetime of the SIDM galaxies compared to the CDM galaxies. Our results highlight a new way in which SIDM can affect the growth and merger history of SMBHs and ultimately give rise to very different galaxy evolution compared to the classic CDM model.

The dense environment of a galaxy cluster can radically transform the content of in-falling galaxies. Recent observations have found a significant population of active galactic nuclei (AGN) within "jellyfish galaxies," galaxies with trailing tails of gas and stars that indicate significant ram pressure stripping. The relationship between AGN and ram pressure stripping is not well understood. In this letter, we investigate the connection between AGN activity and ram pressure in a fully cosmological setting for the first time using the RomulusC simulation, one of the highest resolution simulations of a galaxy cluster to date. We find unambiguous morphological evidence for ram pressure stripping. For lower mass galaxies (with stellar masses < 10^9.5 solar masses) both star formation and black hole accretion are suppressed by ram pressure before they reach pericenter, whereas for more massive galaxies accretion onto the black hole is enhanced during pericentric passage. Our analysis also indicates that as long as the galaxy retains gas, AGN with higher Eddington ratios are more likely to be the found in galaxies experiencing higher ram pressure. We conclude that prior to quenching star formation, ram pressure triggers enhanced accretion onto the black hole, which then produces heating and outflows due to AGN feedback. The intracluster medium (ICM) is a multi-phase environment, dynamically regulated by Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), the motions of galaxies through it, and mergers with other clusters. AGN as a central heating source are key to preventing runaway cooling flows, but their role in heating cores in a cosmological context is still poorly understood. The activity of the AGN is strongly linked to star formation, especially in the Brightest Cluster Galaxy (BCG), likely because both rely on cold phase gas. A self-consistent model for AGN and star formation in galaxy clusters thus requires cosmological context, higher resolution, and a careful modeling of cooling and heating balance. In this paper, we use the high-resolution hydrodynamical cosmological simulation of the RomulusC galaxy cluster to study in detail the role of AGN and a major, head-on merger in shaping the cluster core. The unprecedented resolution of the RomulusC simulation captures the multiphase structure of the ICM. The realistic large-scale outflows launched by very small-scale thermal injections, the improved modeling of turbulent diffusion and mixing, and the particle nature of the simulation allow us to carefully separate different heating channels. We show that AGN activity, while efficient at regulating star formation, is incapable of destroying a CC. Instead, that process is facilitated by a head-on, 1:8 mass ratio merger. The merger generates bulk and turbulent motions, which in turn mix high entropy gas generated by AGN and merger driven shocks, turbulent dissipation and sloshing of the ICM by infalling substructures. While central cooling times remain shorter than the Hubble time, restoring a CC is made more difficult by the reduced precipitation rates at larger radii, emphasizing that the AGN-ICM connection is truly a multi-scale problem., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures

We investigate the effects of massive black hole growth on the structural evolution of dwarf galaxies within the Romulus25 cosmological hydrodynamical simulation. We study a sample of 228 central, isolated dwarf galaxies with stellar masses $M_{star} < 10^{10} M_\odot$ and a central BH. We find that the local $M_{BH} - M_{star}$ relation exhibits a high degree of scatter below $M_{star} < 10^{10} M_\odot$, which we use to classify BHs as overmassive or undermassive relative to their host $M_{star}$. Overmassive BHs grow through a mixture of BH mergers and relatively high average accretion rates, while undermassive BHs grow slowly through accretion. We find that isolated dwarf galaxies that host overmassive BHs also follow different evolutionary tracks relative to their undermassive BH counterparts, building up their stars and dark matter earlier and experiencing star formation suppression starting around $z=2$. By $z=0.05$, overmassive BH hosts above $M_{star} > 10^{9} M_\odot$ are more likely to exhibit lower central stellar mass density, lower HI gas content, and lower star formation rates than their undermassive BH counterparts. Our results suggest that overmassive BHs in isolated galaxies above $M_{star} > 10^{9} M_\odot$ are capable of driving feedback, in many cases suppressing and even quenching star formation by late times., Comment: 19 pages, 12 figures

We study the origins of 122 ultra-diffuse galaxies (UDGs) in the {\sc RomulusC} zoom-in cosmological simulation of a galaxy cluster (M$_{200} = 1.15\times10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$), one of the only such simulations capable of resolving the evolution and structure of dwarf galaxies (M$_{\star} < 10^9$ M$_{\odot}$). We find broad agreement with observed cluster UDGs and predict that they are not separate from the overall cluster dwarf population. UDGs in cluster environments form primarily from dwarf galaxies that experienced early cluster in-fall and subsequent quenching due to ram pressure. The ensuing dimming of these dwarf galaxies due to passive stellar evolution results in a population of very low surface brightness galaxies that are otherwise typical dwarfs. UDGs and non-UDGs alike are affected by tidal interactions with the cluster potential. Tidal stripping of dark matter, as well as mass loss from stellar evolution, results in the adiabatic expansion of stars, particularly in the lowest mass dwarfs. High mass dwarf galaxies show signatures of tidal heating while low mass dwarfs that survive until $z=0$ typically have not experienced such impulsive interactions. There is little difference between UDGs and non-UDGs in terms of their dark matter halos, stellar morphology, colors, and location within the cluster. We study the link between supermassive black hole growth and the stellar mass assembly of their host galaxies in the state-of-the-art Romulus suite of simulations. The cosmological simulations Romulus25 and RomulusC employ innovative recipes for the seeding, accretion, and dynamics of black holes in the field and cluster environments respectively. We find that the black hole accretion rate traces the star formation rate among star-forming galaxies. This result holds for stellar masses between 10^8 and 10^12 solar masses, with a very weak dependence on host halo mass or redshift. The inferred relation between accretion rate and star formation rate does not appear to depend on environment, as no difference is seen in the cluster/proto-cluster volume compared to the field. A model including the star formation rate, the black hole-to-stellar mass ratio, and the cold gas fraction can explain about 70 per cent of all variations in the black hole accretion rate among star forming galaxies. Finally, bearing in mind the limited volume and resolution of these cosmological simulations, we find no evidence for a connection between black hole growth and galaxy mergers, on any timescale and at any redshift. Black holes and their galaxies assemble in tandem in these simulations, regardless of the larger-scale intergalactic environment, suggesting that black hole growth simply follows star formation on galactic scales., Comment: 18 pages, 11 figures. The origin and properties of black hole seeds that grow to produce the detected population of supermassive black holes are unconstrained at present. Despite the existence of several potentially feasible channels for the production of initial seeds in the high redshift universe, since even actively growing seeds are not directly observable at these epochs, discriminating between models remains challenging. Several new observables that encapsulate information about seeding have been proposed in recent years, and these offer exciting prospects for truly unraveling the nature of black hole seeds in the coming years. One of the key challenges for this task lies in the complexity of the problem, the required disentangling of the confounding effects of accretion physics and mergers, as mergers and accretion events over cosmic time stand to erase these initial conditions. Nevertheless, some unique signatures of seeding do survive and still exist in: local scaling relations between black holes and their galaxy hosts at low-masses; in high-redshift luminosity functions of accreting black holes; and in the total number and mass functions of gravitational wave coalescence events from merging binary black holes. One of the clearest discriminants for seed models are these high redshift gravitational wave detections of mergers from space detectable in the milliHertz range. These predicted event rates offer the most direct constraints on the properties of initial black hole seeds. Quasar absorption-line studies in the ultraviolet (UV) can uniquely probe the nature of the multiphase cool-warm (10^4 < T < 10^6 K) gas in and around galaxy clusters, promising to provide unprecedented insights into 1) interactions between the circumgalactic medium (CGM) associated with infalling galaxies and the hot (T > 10^6 K) X-ray emitting intracluster medium (ICM), 2) the stripping of metal-rich gas from the CGM, and 3) a multiphase structure of the ICM with a wide range of temperatures and metallicities. In this work, we present results from a high-resolution simulation of a ~10^14 solar mass galaxy cluster to study the physical properties and observable signatures of this cool-warm gas in galaxy clusters. We show that the ICM becomes increasingly multiphased at large radii, with the cool-warm gas becoming dominant in cluster outskirts. The diffuse cool-warm gas also exhibits a wider range of metallicity than the hot X-ray emitting gas. We make predictions for the covering fractions of key absorption-line tracers, both in the ICM and in the CGM of cluster galaxies, typically observed with the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Observational evidence has been mounting for the existence of intermediate mass black holes (IMBHs, 10^2-10^5 Msun), but observing them at all, much less constraining their masses, is very challenging. In one theorized formation channel, IMBHs are the seeds for supermassive black holes in the early universe. As a result, IMBHs are predicted to exist in the local universe in dwarf galaxies, as well as wandering in more massive galaxy halos. However, these environments are not conducive to the accretion events or dynamical signatures that allow us to detect IMBHs. The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will demystify IMBHs by detecting the mergers of these objects out to extremely high redshifts, while measuring their masses with extremely high precision. Coalescing, massive black-hole (MBH) binaries are the most powerful sources of gravitational waves (GWs) in the Universe, which makes MBH science a prime focus for ongoing and upcoming GW observatories. The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) -- a gigameter scale space-based GW observatory -- will grant us access to an immense cosmological volume, revealing MBHs merging when the first cosmic structures assembled in the Dark Ages. LISA will unveil the yet unknown origin of the first quasars, and detect the teeming population of MBHs of $10^4 - 10^7$ solar masses. forming within protogalactic halos. The Pulsar Timing Array, a galactic-scale GW survey, can access the largest MBHs the Universe, detecting the cosmic GW foreground from inspiraling MBH binaries of about 10^9 solar masses. LISA can measure MBH spins and masses with precision far exceeding that from electromagnetic (EM) probes, and together, both GW observatories will provide the first full census of binary MBHs, and their orbital dynamics, across cosmic time. Detecting the loud gravitational signal of these MBH binaries will also trigger alerts for EM counterpart searches, from decades (PTAs) to hours (LISA) prior to the final merger. By witnessing both the GW and EM signals of MBH mergers, precious information will be gathered about the rich and complex environment in the aftermath of a galaxy collision. The past decade has seen an explosion of discoveries and new insights into the diffuse gas within galaxies, galaxy clusters, and the filaments composing the Cosmic Web. A new decade will bring fresh opportunities to further this progress towards developing a comprehensive view of the composition, thermal state, and physical processes of diffuse gas in the Universe. Ultraviolet (UV) spectroscopy, probing diffuse 10^4-10^6 K gas at high spectral resolution, is uniquely poised to (1) witness environmental galaxy quenching processes in action, such as strangulation and tidal- and ram-pressure stripping, (2) directly account for the baryon content of galaxy clusters in the cold-warm (T<10^6 K) gas, (3) determine the phase structure and kinematics of gas participating in the equilibrium-regulating exchange of energy at the cores of galaxy clusters, and (4) map cold streams and filaments of the Cosmic Web that feed galaxies and clusters. With a substantial UV undertaking beyond the Hubble Space Telescope, all of the above would be achievable over the entire epoch of galaxy cluster formation. Strong lensing of active galactic nuclei in the radio can result in razor-thin arcs, with a thickness of less than a milli-arcsecond, if observed at the resolution achievable with very long baseline interferometry (VLBI). Such razor-thin arcs provide a unique window on the coarseness of the matter distribution between source and observer. In this paper, we investigate to what extent such razor-thin arcs can constrain the number density and mass function of `free-floating' black holes, defined as black holes that do not, or no longer, reside at the centre of a galaxy. These can be either primordial in origin or arise as by-products of the evolution of super-massive black holes in galactic nuclei. When sufficiently close to the line of sight, free-floating black holes cause kink-like distortions in the arcs, which are detectable by eye in the VLBI images as long as the black hole mass exceeds $\sim 1000$ Solar masses. Using a crude estimate for the detectability of such distortions, we analytically compute constraints on the matter density of free-floating black holes resulting from null-detections of distortions along a realistic, fiducial arc, and find them to be comparable to those from quasar milli-lensing. We also use predictions from a large hydrodynamical simulation for the demographics of free-floating black holes that are not primordial in origin, and show that their predicted mass density is roughly four orders of magnitude below the constraints achievable with a single razor-thin arc., Comment: 17 pages, 13 figures, 1 table, comments welcome

We examine the effects of SMBH feedback on the CGM using a cosmological hydrodynamic simulation \citep[{\sc Romulus25};][]{Tremmel2017} and a set of four zoom-in `genetically modified' Milky Way-mass galaxies sampling different evolutionary paths. By tracing the distribution of metals in the circumgalactic medium (CGM), we show that \ion{O}{6} is a sensitive indicator of supermassive black hole (SMBH) feedback. First, we calculate the column densities of \ion{O}{6} in simulated Milky Way-mass galaxies and compare them with observations from the COS-Halos Survey. Our simulations show column densities of \ion{O}{6} in the CGM consistent with those of COS-Halos star forming and quenched galaxies. These results contrast with those from previous simulation studies which typically underproduce CGM column densities of \ion{O}{6}. We determine that a galaxy's star formation history and assembly record have little effect on the amount of \ion{O}{6} in its CGM. Instead, column densities of \ion{O}{6} are closely tied to galaxy halo mass and BH growth history. As matter accretes onto the central supermassive black holes in active galactic nuclei (AGN), X-rays are emitted. We present a population synthesis model that accounts for the summed X-ray emission from growing black holes; modulo the efficiency of converting mass to X-rays, this is effectively a record of the accreted mass. We need this population synthesis model to reproduce observed constraints from X-ray surveys: the X-ray number counts, the observed fraction of Compton-thick AGN [$\log$ (N$_{\rm H}$/cm$^{\rm -2}$) $>$ 24] and the spectrum of the cosmic X-ray background (CXB), after accounting for selection biases. Over the past decade, X-ray surveys by {\it XMM-Newton}, {\it Chandra}, \textit{NuSTAR} and \textit{Swift}-BAT have provided greatly improved observational constraints. We find that no existing X-ray luminosity function (XLF) consistently reproduces all these observations. We take the uncertainty in AGN spectra into account, and use a neural network to compute an XLF that fits all observed constraints, including observed Compton-thick number counts and fractions. This new population synthesis model suggests that, intrinsically, 50$\pm$9\% (56$\pm$7\%) of all AGN within z $\simeq$ 0.1 (1.0) are Compton-thick., Comment: Accepted by ApJ

We present the first results from RomulusC, the highest resolution cosmological hydrodynamic simulation of a galaxy cluster run to date. RomulusC, a zoom-in simulation of a halo with $z=0$ mass $10^{14}$ M$_{\odot}$, is run with the same sub-grid physics and resolution as Romulus25 (Tremmel et al. 2017). With unprecedented mass and spatial resolution, RomulusC represents a unique opportunity to study the evolution of galaxies in dense environments down to dwarf masses. We demonstrate that RomulusC results in an intracluster medium (ICM) consistent with observations. The star formation history and stellar mass of the brightest cluster galaxy (BCG) is consistent with observations and abundance matching results, indicating that our sub-grid models, optimized only to reproduce observations of field dwarf and Milky Way mass galaxies, are able to produce reasonable galaxy masses and star formation histories in much higher mass systems. Feedback from supermassive black holes (SMBHs) regulates star formation by driving large-scale, collimated outflows that coexist with a low entropy core. We find that non-BCG cluster member galaxies are substantially quenched compared to the field down to dwarf galaxy masses and, at low masses, quenching is seen to have no dependence on mass or distance from the cluster center. This enhanced quenched population extends beyond $R_{200}$ and is in place at high redshift. Recent discoveries of massive black holes (MBHs) in dwarf galaxies suggest that they may have a more common presence than once thought. Systematic searches are revealing more candidates, but this process could be accelerated by predictions from simulations. We perform a study of several high-resolution, cosmological, zoom-in simulations focusing on dwarf galaxies that host massive black holes at z = 0, with the aim of determining when the black holes are most observable. Larger dwarf galaxies are more likely to host MBHs than those of lower mass. About 50% of the MBHs in dwarfs are not centrally located, but rather are wandering within a few kpc of the galaxy center. The accretion luminosities of MBHs in dwarfs are low throughout cosmic time, rendering them extremely difficult to detect. We present Tangos, a Python framework and web interface for database-driven analysis of numerical structure formation simulations. To understand the role that such a tool can play, consider constructing a history for the absolute magnitude of each galaxy within a simulation. The magnitudes must first be calculated for all halos at all timesteps and then linked using a merger tree; folding the required information into a final analysis can entail significant effort. Tangos is a generic solution to this information organization problem, aiming to free users from the details of data management. At the querying stage, our example of gathering properties over history is reduced to a few clicks or a simple, single-line Python command. The framework is highly extensible; in particular, users are expected to define their own properties which tangos will write into the database. A variety of parallelization options are available and the raw simulation data can be read using existing libraries such as pynbody or yt. Finally, tangos-based databases and analysis pipelines can easily be shared with collaborators or the broader community to ensure reproducibility. We present a self-consistent prediction from a large-scale cosmological simulation for the population of `wandering' supermassive black holes (SMBHs) of mass greater than $10^6$ M$_{\odot}$ on long-lived, kpc-scale orbits within Milky Way (MW)-mass galaxies. We extract a sample of MW-mass halos from the Romulus25 cosmological simulation (Tremmel et al. 2017), which is uniquely able to capture the orbital evolution of SMBHs during and following galaxy mergers. We predict that such halos, regardless of recent merger history or morphology, host an average of $5.1 \pm 3.3$ SMBHs, including their central black hole, within 10 kpc from the galactic center and an average of $12.2 \pm 8.4$ SMBHs total within their virial radius, not counting those in satellite halos. Wandering SMBHs exist within their host galaxies for several Gyrs, often accreted by their host halo in the early Universe. We present the first self-consistent prediction for the distribution of formation timescales for close Supermassive Black Hole (SMBH) pairs following galaxy mergers. Using ROMULUS25, the first large-scale cosmological simulation to accurately track the orbital evolution of SMBHs within their host galaxies down to sub-kpc scales, we predict an average formation rate density of close SMBH pairs of 0.013 cMpc^-3 Gyr^-1. We find that it is relatively rare for galaxy mergers to result in the formation of close SMBH pairs with sub-kpc separation and those that do form are often the result of Gyrs of orbital evolution following the galaxy merger. The likelihood and timescale to form a close SMBH pair depends strongly on the mass ratio of the merging galaxies, as well as the presence of dense stellar cores. Low stellar mass ratio mergers with galaxies that lack a dense stellar core are more likely to become tidally disrupted and deposit their SMBH at large radii without any stellar core to aid in their orbital decay, resulting in a population of long-lived 'wandering' SMBHs. Conversely, SMBHs in galaxies that remain embedded within a stellar core form close pairs in much shorter timescales on average. Signal estimates for direct axion dark matter searches have used the isothermal sphere halo model for the last several decades. While insightful, the isothermal model does not capture effects from a halo's infall history nor the influence of baryonic matter, which has been shown to significantly influence a halo's inner structure. The high resolution of cavity axion detectors can make use of modern cosmological structure-formation simulations, which begin from realistic initial conditions, incorporate a wide range of baryonic physics, and are capable of resolving detailed structure. This letter uses a state-of-the-art cosmological N-body+Smoothed-Particle Hydrodynamics simulation to develop an improved signal model for axion cavity searches. Signal shapes from a class of galaxies encompassing the Milky Way are found to depart significantly from the isothermal sphere.
