Abstract

The past 30 years have seen spectacular progress in the development of techniques for measuring the complete temporal field, and even the complete spatiotemporal field, of ultrashort laser pulses. The challenge has been to measure a pulse without the use of a shorter event or an independent known reference pulse, neither of which is typically available. We begin with autocorrelation, the first such "self-referenced" pulse-measurement method ever proposed, which measures only a rough pulse length, and we describe its limitations. One such limitation is the presence of a somewhat unintuitive "coherent artifact," which occurs for complicated pulses and also when averaging over a train of pulses whose shapes vary from pulse to pulse. We then describe the most important modern techniques capable of measuring the complete temporal intensity and phase of even complicated ultrashort pulses, as well as their ability (or inability) to measure such unstable pulse trains. A pulse reliably measured with such a device can then be used as a reference pulse in conjunction with another technique, such as spectral interferometry or holography, to measure pulses otherwise unmeasurable by a self-referenced technique. Examples include techniques for measuring low-intensity pulse(s) and for measuring the complete spatiotemporal intensity and phase of arbitrary pulse(s). Abstract

We demonstrate a powerful and practical spectral interferometer with near-field scanning microscopy (NSOM) probes for measuring the spatiotemporal electric field of tightly focused ultrashort pulses with high spatial and spectral resolution. Our measurements involved numerical apertures as high as 0.44 and yielded the spatiotemporal field at and around the foci produced by two microscope objectives and several different lenses. For the first time, we measure the spatiotemporal field of the Bessel-like X-shaped pulse caused by spherical aberrations and a "fore-runner pulse" due to chromatic aberrations. We observed spatial features smaller than 1 mu m and verified these results with non-paraxial simulations.

Abstract

In this chapter, we developed the theory of frequency-resolved optical gating (FROG) in the few-cycle regime and applied it to the SHC FROG measurement of 2.5-optical-cycle pulses with a central wavelength around 800 nm. These are some of the shortest pulses that have been completely characterized to date. We also describe the measurement of uncompressed strongly nontransform-limited weak-intensity continuum pulses. These two key measurements, which are required to design, test, and optimize the pulse compressor, were both performed without a single change in the SHG FROG apparatus. No other pulse measurement technique known allows such simplicity and versatility.

Abstract

The phase coherence of supercontinuum generation in microstructure fiber is quantified by performing a Young's type interference experiment between independently generated supercontinua from two separate fiber segments. Analysis of the resulting interferogram yields the wavelength dependence of the magnitude of the mutual degree of coherence, and a comparison of experimental results with numerical simulations suggests that the primary source of coherence degradation is the technical noise-induced fluctuations in the injected peak power. © 2003 Optical Society of America., 0, SCOPUS: ar.j, info:eu-repo/semantics/published
